Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:06.63\00:00:08.97 Before the break with guest, Ed Cooke, 00:00:09.00\00:00:12.17 we were far away in the Middle East, 00:00:12.21\00:00:14.44 talking about what's going on there 00:00:14.48\00:00:17.15 and starting with the US affirmation, 00:00:17.18\00:00:20.32 as you pointed out of an earlier action 00:00:20.35\00:00:22.25 before President Trump, 00:00:22.28\00:00:23.72 but he formalized the recognition 00:00:23.75\00:00:27.09 or the movement of the US Embassy 00:00:27.12\00:00:29.22 to Jerusalem 00:00:29.26\00:00:30.59 as their capital of wisdom. 00:00:30.63\00:00:31.96 You know, back in 1995, there was the US... 00:00:31.99\00:00:35.43 The regional election, but did it in 2017. 00:00:35.46\00:00:38.10 Yeah. 00:00:38.13\00:00:39.47 So the US Congress passed the US Embassy and Israel Act. 00:00:39.50\00:00:43.37 They voted and passed it back in 1995. 00:00:43.41\00:00:45.77 And each president 00:00:45.81\00:00:47.14 after that was reluctant to actually enact it. 00:00:47.18\00:00:49.64 Because they thought it was a big hot potato. 00:00:49.68\00:00:52.25 And I still think it is, but amazingly, 00:00:52.28\00:00:54.35 as we were discussing 00:00:54.38\00:00:55.72 it didn't immediately inflame the area, 00:00:55.75\00:00:58.45 and maybe, you know, 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.66 a burning, itching sore can't become more sore. 00:01:01.69\00:01:05.53 But that's also why, like you pointed out 00:01:05.56\00:01:07.40 when Trump did go ahead and enacted that act. 00:01:07.43\00:01:10.60 He put into effect that act from 1995 in 2017, 00:01:10.63\00:01:14.57 but when he did that, 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.24 many of his supporters that viewed him as the, 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.84 maybe the savior for their movement... 00:01:18.87\00:01:21.24 And they went into overdrive. 00:01:21.28\00:01:22.61 Yeah, because they said, 00:01:22.64\00:01:23.98 "Oh, he's the Cyrus that would, 00:01:24.01\00:01:25.35 the Bible predicted in Isaiah 45, 00:01:25.38\00:01:27.22 to bring about liberation, 00:01:27.25\00:01:28.82 and to help us as conservative Christians 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.79 move our agenda forward." 00:01:31.82\00:01:33.15 And if there was any dispute about what this meant, 00:01:33.19\00:01:36.19 and what was driving it. 00:01:36.22\00:01:38.76 Was settled for me, I watched the ceremony. 00:01:38.79\00:01:41.63 And it was a lot of crowing by American evangelicals, 00:01:41.66\00:01:45.13 I think that spoiled it 00:01:45.17\00:01:46.50 because if they had laid low at that point, 00:01:46.53\00:01:48.50 it could have been at least passed off 00:01:48.54\00:01:50.61 as just a hardheaded political act. 00:01:50.64\00:01:52.44 But no, they were... 00:01:52.47\00:01:55.34 They were talking apocalyptic language 00:01:55.38\00:01:57.08 at that time. 00:01:57.11\00:01:58.51 And like many things in this world, 00:01:58.55\00:02:01.25 it links with other things. 00:02:01.28\00:02:02.65 And I think the US actions against Iran 00:02:02.68\00:02:06.19 are colored by evangelical expectation 00:02:06.22\00:02:10.13 of what should happen in Israel. 00:02:10.16\00:02:12.96 And interestingly enough, 00:02:12.99\00:02:15.03 Cyrus is connected with Iran. 00:02:15.06\00:02:19.20 But we forget that. Yeah. 00:02:19.23\00:02:20.57 And I'm old enough to remember 00:02:20.60\00:02:22.60 many headlines in US newspapers 00:02:22.64\00:02:24.77 about how wonderful Iran was, 00:02:24.81\00:02:26.54 they were our top allies, they were a friend of the world 00:02:26.57\00:02:29.21 without the shadow of the teeth. 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.15 So I become a little cynical in my old age, 00:02:31.18\00:02:33.78 unless you keep to a fixed point, 00:02:33.82\00:02:36.69 which is easy for us Christians reading the Bible. 00:02:36.72\00:02:39.72 It's unchangeable, God's Word doesn't change. 00:02:39.75\00:02:42.19 But lest you remember that, 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.96 you could be swept along 00:02:43.99\00:02:45.33 where night is now day or yes, you know it changes. 00:02:45.36\00:02:48.83 We got the winds blow every direction. 00:02:48.86\00:02:51.03 Or to make it more contemporary 00:02:51.07\00:02:52.40 for those that might have a literary remembrance, 00:02:52.43\00:02:54.70 you know, the book 1984, 00:02:54.74\00:02:59.31 there were three powers in the world, 00:02:59.34\00:03:00.88 Oceania is one I remember, 00:03:00.91\00:03:02.74 three powers, neither, 00:03:02.78\00:03:04.11 no two could beat the other one. 00:03:04.15\00:03:05.81 And so the rivalries were shifting all the time. 00:03:05.85\00:03:08.28 And the banner without any explanation would shift. 00:03:08.32\00:03:10.65 Now these are the enemy, they're the enemy. 00:03:10.69\00:03:13.96 And we need to be careful, we're not sort of seesawed 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.62 between those thinking, those thinkings. 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.13 And to me, and I may, trying to make a religious point here. 00:03:19.16\00:03:23.03 Iran has wonderful memories, 00:03:23.06\00:03:25.30 I've visited as a young person 00:03:25.33\00:03:26.74 when back when the Shah was there. 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.84 And I had no brief for the Shah, 00:03:28.87\00:03:30.37 and neither then nor now. 00:03:30.41\00:03:32.04 But we traveled out into the countryside of Iran. 00:03:32.07\00:03:36.01 And my father had taken us there, 00:03:36.04\00:03:39.01 and seemed like about two hours or so 00:03:39.05\00:03:42.02 from the capital of Tehran, 00:03:42.05\00:03:43.89 we met with quite a large group 00:03:43.92\00:03:45.72 of Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:03:45.75\00:03:47.26 at a camp meeting get together. 00:03:47.29\00:03:49.86 And you wouldn't know such things happen now. 00:03:49.89\00:03:53.60 I mean, it's... 00:03:53.63\00:03:54.96 Because nowadays, you know, with the conflict going on 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.80 in those areas, right, like in Syria, 00:03:56.83\00:03:59.00 and then now between Palestine and Israel, 00:03:59.03\00:04:01.44 and also, you know, with Iran 00:04:01.47\00:04:03.17 and issues that have taken place, 00:04:03.20\00:04:05.54 you know, with Iraq and US intervention there. 00:04:05.57\00:04:08.84 You've got a lot of that play area 00:04:08.88\00:04:10.21 that is totally devastated now, 00:04:10.25\00:04:11.91 because of the shelling the bombs, warfare, 00:04:11.95\00:04:14.48 and many Christians from those areas 00:04:14.52\00:04:16.89 have now fled out of there. 00:04:16.92\00:04:18.52 Oh, in Iraq. Absolutely. 00:04:18.55\00:04:20.49 But I don't believe that's the case in Iran. 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.36 They're just laying low. 00:04:22.39\00:04:24.83 It's an Islamic Republic, but I know from visiting there, 00:04:24.86\00:04:28.26 Iran is not as hardcore 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.93 as much of what we think of as the Middle East. 00:04:30.97\00:04:33.54 They're not even Arabs. 00:04:33.57\00:04:35.50 They are Muslim. 00:04:35.54\00:04:36.87 But what struck me 00:04:36.91\00:04:38.34 and it's the enduring memory of Tehran, 00:04:38.37\00:04:40.91 because out in the country, different flavors, 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.78 village life and so on. 00:04:42.81\00:04:44.25 But I can tell you out in the country, 00:04:44.28\00:04:45.61 the US, it's not Hollywood. 00:04:45.65\00:04:48.28 You go to your little farming town 00:04:48.32\00:04:50.65 or a backwoods town, 00:04:50.69\00:04:52.92 it's Middle America, it's stepping back in time, 00:04:52.95\00:04:55.26 but it's not what you see on television, 00:04:55.29\00:04:58.43 but the enduring scenes for me in Iran, in Tehran, 00:04:58.46\00:05:05.30 it was like Paris, 00:05:05.33\00:05:07.17 like the wide boulevards with the cafes on the sidewalk, 00:05:07.20\00:05:13.24 wonderful architecture, nice people. 00:05:13.27\00:05:17.15 And we need to remember that, I think all of us, 00:05:17.18\00:05:20.22 whether it was thinking religious liberty, 00:05:20.25\00:05:22.25 or just the brotherhood of mankind, 00:05:22.28\00:05:24.92 there are good people all over the world 00:05:24.95\00:05:27.46 and there are bad people all over the world, 00:05:27.49\00:05:29.12 and the average person just wants to live his life. 00:05:29.16\00:05:33.83 And the average person is seeking 00:05:33.86\00:05:37.17 some spiritual security in ways the best they can. 00:05:37.20\00:05:40.57 And, of course, as Christians, you and I can reach out, 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.90 we have the permit, 00:05:42.94\00:05:44.27 but we shouldn't just wipe them off. 00:05:44.31\00:05:45.94 Yep. 00:05:45.97\00:05:47.31 And I, you know, I remember very clearly 00:05:47.34\00:05:49.58 during the Balkans War, 00:05:49.61\00:05:51.91 when we were bombing Belgrade, 00:05:51.95\00:05:55.18 seemed a just thing to do 00:05:55.22\00:05:56.58 because the Yugoslavia or the Serbs were ethnic 00:05:56.62\00:06:03.29 cleansing certain Muslims, right? 00:06:03.32\00:06:05.59 But at that same time, 00:06:05.63\00:06:06.96 the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Belgrade 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.60 was going through great traumas, 00:06:09.63\00:06:11.57 because their young people 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.44 were being conscripted into the army, 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.00 and were being forced on to the front lines. 00:06:15.04\00:06:17.87 So, you know, we were thinking this is great, 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.71 we're bombing them, 00:06:19.74\00:06:21.14 but their fellow Christians 00:06:21.18\00:06:22.58 who did not believe in the craziness 00:06:22.61\00:06:24.95 that was going on that were in harm's way there. 00:06:24.98\00:06:26.82 Yep. 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.18 So let's pivot a bit. 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.29 Sure. 00:06:30.32\00:06:31.65 Whether this is pivotal as, 00:06:31.69\00:06:33.36 as some of the political pivots, 00:06:33.39\00:06:34.79 but let's talk more American politics, 00:06:34.82\00:06:38.53 the Supreme Court. 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.56 You've written a number of articles already 00:06:41.60\00:06:43.73 recently for liberty on this. 00:06:43.77\00:06:47.24 What do you think 00:06:47.27\00:06:48.60 is the state of the court lately 00:06:48.64\00:06:50.71 in the light of the recent election 00:06:50.74\00:06:52.07 and a few actions 00:06:52.11\00:06:53.44 that have come down in recent months? 00:06:53.48\00:06:56.18 Well, I know one thing 00:06:56.21\00:06:57.61 that we can say kind of at the surface level, right? 00:06:57.65\00:07:00.82 Is just dealing with the makeup of the court, 00:07:00.85\00:07:03.62 in the sense that if you look at the court, 00:07:03.65\00:07:06.62 the nine member court back in the 1950s, 1960s, 00:07:06.65\00:07:10.63 it seemed to be, in fact, 00:07:10.66\00:07:11.99 I should say it was more reflective of the dynamic 00:07:12.03\00:07:15.23 and the demographics of America i.e. 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.03 you had some that were Protestant, 00:07:18.07\00:07:19.83 you had some Jews, 00:07:19.87\00:07:21.20 and you had maybe by the time of the 70s, 00:07:21.24\00:07:24.44 a Catholic or and then more Catholics. 00:07:24.47\00:07:26.91 And nowadays, you've got predominantly 00:07:26.94\00:07:29.38 Catholic members on the court. 00:07:29.41\00:07:30.81 Well, for the last few decades. 00:07:30.85\00:07:32.18 But that's shifted slightly in the last few appointments, 00:07:32.21\00:07:34.52 doesn't it? 00:07:34.55\00:07:36.48 I... From what I'm looking at it, 00:07:36.52\00:07:38.75 I actually feel that in, 00:07:38.79\00:07:41.22 maybe in the last five years, 00:07:41.26\00:07:43.29 there might have been a slight variation. 00:07:43.32\00:07:47.20 But still more Catholics than any other. 00:07:47.23\00:07:49.33 Yes. Absolutely. 00:07:49.36\00:07:50.70 However... 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.07 Which is not a constitutional problem. 00:07:52.10\00:07:53.44 The Constitution says 00:07:53.47\00:07:54.80 no religious test for public office. 00:07:54.84\00:07:56.17 Correct. 00:07:56.20\00:07:57.54 But it's the demographic imbalance. 00:07:57.57\00:07:58.91 Yes. 00:07:58.94\00:08:00.28 In other words, it doesn't represent 00:08:00.31\00:08:01.64 all of the people of America by demographic figures. 00:08:01.68\00:08:03.85 However, I think that 00:08:03.88\00:08:05.71 just looking at that religious factor alone 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.95 is not enough to say, 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.32 Okay, you've got majority that are Catholic all one mind, 00:08:09.35\00:08:12.59 because they're at odds with each other 00:08:12.62\00:08:13.96 on different decisions. 00:08:13.99\00:08:15.32 There's some that are more liberal minded, 00:08:15.36\00:08:16.73 others that are more conservative. 00:08:16.76\00:08:18.99 So looking at their judicial, their jurisprudence, 00:08:19.03\00:08:22.70 there has been a trend from roughly 2000 onward, 00:08:22.73\00:08:26.33 that is more leaning in the direction 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.90 as one would say, one church scholar 00:08:27.94\00:08:30.87 has recognized the Roberts Court, 00:08:30.91\00:08:33.11 which basically is the direction of the court 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.74 nowadays, that is more leaning 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.35 in the direction of supporting 00:08:37.38\00:08:39.38 your conservative Christian group. 00:08:39.41\00:08:40.75 Yeah. 00:08:40.78\00:08:42.12 And the way I put it 00:08:42.15\00:08:43.49 is the supporting religious entitlement. 00:08:43.52\00:08:44.89 It's there in favor of religion, 00:08:44.92\00:08:46.82 but it tends to be a narrow interest. 00:08:46.86\00:08:49.86 And shorter term, we're running out of time 00:08:49.89\00:08:52.49 on this program, 00:08:52.53\00:08:53.86 but I'm encouraged that during the election, 00:08:53.90\00:08:56.80 which is not a religious issue, but they kept their heads, 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.93 as Kipling says 00:08:59.97\00:09:01.30 when all around are losing theirs. 00:09:01.34\00:09:03.37 And so they kept the US on a constitutional track. 00:09:03.41\00:09:06.51 They could have easily aided and abetted, 00:09:06.54\00:09:08.41 and incipient either rebellion or collapse of the system. 00:09:08.44\00:09:13.25 And then in the COVID era, 00:09:13.28\00:09:15.75 I think they belatedly did a good service 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.35 in upholding the right of churches to meet 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.39 when they were not passing muster in many states 00:09:22.42\00:09:24.56 as essential services and were being harassed. 00:09:24.59\00:09:27.83 In California that was outright harassment 00:09:27.86\00:09:29.66 by the governor. 00:09:29.70\00:09:31.60 So I encourage there 00:09:31.63\00:09:33.07 but as you've written 00:09:33.10\00:09:34.50 this been an up and down over the years, 00:09:34.54\00:09:36.30 not all court, 00:09:36.34\00:09:37.67 Supreme Court actions have been positive 00:09:37.71\00:09:39.41 and the infamous Smith 00:09:39.44\00:09:40.78 one with a... 00:09:40.81\00:09:44.95 Restricted piety 00:09:44.98\00:09:48.32 as a religious activity, 00:09:48.35\00:09:49.68 which doesn't bother most people, 00:09:49.72\00:09:51.05 but it said that that religion could, 00:09:51.09\00:09:54.16 religious actions could be restricted 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.06 as long as they were generally applicable rules. 00:09:56.09\00:09:58.63 Well, that sort of... 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.53 All that means is 00:10:00.56\00:10:01.90 if the majority think otherwise, 00:10:01.93\00:10:03.26 you lose up. 00:10:03.30\00:10:04.63 Correct. 00:10:04.67\00:10:06.00 So in the little time left and any other comments 00:10:06.03\00:10:08.50 on where the Supreme Court is going, 00:10:08.54\00:10:09.87 because many people hang on their actions? 00:10:09.90\00:10:12.27 Well, I think that 00:10:12.31\00:10:15.01 the looking at the movement of the religious right 00:10:15.04\00:10:17.21 back to the 70s onward, 00:10:17.25\00:10:19.18 their, part of their stated agenda 00:10:19.21\00:10:21.12 is being able to put justices on the Supreme Court 00:10:21.15\00:10:25.12 that would help to overturn not only Roe v. Wade, 00:10:25.15\00:10:28.09 but also reestablish 00:10:28.12\00:10:29.69 what they believe is Christianity 00:10:29.72\00:10:32.13 established by law. 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.76 And thanks for bringing that up. 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.13 That bothers me because it's premised 00:10:35.16\00:10:37.03 on a corrupt judiciary, isn't it? 00:10:37.07\00:10:39.77 That you can stack it and therefore, 00:10:39.80\00:10:41.77 their bias view will predominate 00:10:41.80\00:10:43.51 and thankfully, 00:10:43.54\00:10:44.87 mostly to this point, 00:10:44.91\00:10:46.27 even someone from a faction when they're on the court, 00:10:46.31\00:10:49.24 they then become quite responsible, 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.71 and study the law rather than... 00:10:51.75\00:10:54.72 The group that put them in office. 00:10:54.75\00:10:56.08 Yes. 00:10:56.12\00:10:57.45 I mean, it's not inflexible, but this generally speaking, 00:10:57.49\00:11:00.09 I think it's tended to revert to common sense legal decisions 00:11:00.12\00:11:03.96 rather than factional bias 00:11:03.99\00:11:05.96 which they are aiming for by stacking the deck. 00:11:05.99\00:11:08.23 True. 00:11:08.26\00:11:09.60 So, you know, again, 00:11:09.63\00:11:11.23 you've written a number of articles on this, 00:11:11.27\00:11:13.13 any prognostications for the immediate future? 00:11:13.17\00:11:16.20 More decking or where do we go? 00:11:16.24\00:11:19.27 I think that it's going to be any political party 00:11:19.31\00:11:22.18 that gets into office 00:11:22.21\00:11:23.95 is certainly going to have an influence 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.31 on the direction of the court 00:11:25.35\00:11:26.68 and who gets nominated there. 00:11:26.72\00:11:28.38 I think that the most important thing, 00:11:28.42\00:11:29.98 though, for us as Christians to do 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.62 is look at the Supreme Judge Jesus, 00:11:31.65\00:11:34.42 and live our lives in such a way 00:11:34.46\00:11:35.79 that we can answer Him 00:11:35.82\00:11:37.16 during the judgment 00:11:37.19\00:11:38.53 and leave political situations here in God's hands to guide. 00:11:38.56\00:11:41.60 I remember hearing about a famous, 00:11:45.67\00:11:49.84 precious stone 00:11:49.87\00:11:51.21 that came from the Middle East, 00:11:51.24\00:11:52.57 and it was called the Tears of the Prophet. 00:11:52.61\00:11:55.18 I'm presuming that was Muhammad. 00:11:55.21\00:11:57.01 But what stuck in my mind of the tears of the Christ. 00:11:57.05\00:12:01.48 It's recorded in the Bible that looking over Jerusalem, 00:12:01.52\00:12:04.89 Jesus wept on seeing the city 00:12:04.92\00:12:08.06 because it had persecuted the prophets. 00:12:08.09\00:12:10.03 And as He said, "Not one stone was to be left upon another." 00:12:10.06\00:12:14.33 That's worth remembering 00:12:14.36\00:12:15.70 when we look at modern day Jerusalem 00:12:15.73\00:12:17.93 and, of course, that state of Israel. 00:12:17.97\00:12:22.27 The punishment has already come upon it. 00:12:22.30\00:12:24.81 Now we need to pray for healing, 00:12:24.84\00:12:26.98 because the Prince, the Righteous Judge, 00:12:27.01\00:12:30.51 not an earthly judge, 00:12:30.55\00:12:31.88 the Prince is soon to return 00:12:31.91\00:12:33.98 and His reward will be with Him. 00:12:34.02\00:12:36.28 Along the way, we're seeing embassies come and go, 00:12:36.32\00:12:39.12 armies come and go, 00:12:39.15\00:12:40.92 but Christ and His eternal truth remains. 00:12:40.96\00:12:45.76 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:45.79\00:12:48.40
