Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.06\00:00:30.09 This is the program designed for you 00:00:30.13\00:00:33.29 and your interest in religious liberty, 00:00:33.33\00:00:34.96 because we're bound to present discussions, information, 00:00:35.00\00:00:38.93 and updates that bear on religious liberty in the U.S 00:00:38.97\00:00:42.30 and indeed around the world. 00:00:42.34\00:00:43.94 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:43.97\00:00:45.51 22 years, editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:45.54\00:00:48.51 and nearly as long on this program. 00:00:48.54\00:00:51.35 And my guest Ed Cooke, 00:00:51.38\00:00:54.02 a doctorate in church state studies from Baylor, 00:00:54.05\00:00:56.75 Seventh-day Adventist pastor, an author, 00:00:56.79\00:00:59.29 book reviewer, what else? 00:00:59.32\00:01:00.92 Where do we go? And lecturer. 00:01:00.96\00:01:02.66 Yes, lecturer, and you live in Texas, 00:01:02.69\00:01:04.73 but, that could be a plus or it could even be a negative. 00:01:04.76\00:01:08.76 Sure. But welcome to the program. 00:01:08.80\00:01:10.77 Well, thank you. 00:01:10.80\00:01:12.77 Ambassadors, I want to talk a bit about 00:01:12.80\00:01:15.14 embassies and ambassadors. 00:01:15.17\00:01:17.04 And it puts me to mind of my father dying 00:01:17.07\00:01:19.97 about 14 years ago now. 00:01:20.01\00:01:22.14 And as he was being wheeled off for his final surgery, 00:01:22.18\00:01:26.75 was they'd only given him about 10 minutes notice. 00:01:26.78\00:01:30.49 He said to the orderly who turned up with the gurney. 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.66 He says, do you know, he says, "I'm an ambassador." 00:01:33.69\00:01:36.09 The guy looks at him, "What am I, 00:01:36.12\00:01:37.46 how am I supposed to treat this ambassador, 00:01:37.49\00:01:38.83 this elevated person?" 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.36 And he says, "I'm an ambassador for heaven," 00:01:40.40\00:01:43.33 which we all are. 00:01:43.37\00:01:44.70 Amen. 00:01:44.73\00:01:46.07 So, at the end of the day, 00:01:46.10\00:01:47.74 that's the ultimate embassy and representation, 00:01:47.77\00:01:50.31 isn't it for a Christian or anyone of faith, 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.94 but particularly for a Christian. 00:01:52.97\00:01:54.31 True. 00:01:54.34\00:01:55.68 You know, as Paul says, 00:01:55.71\00:01:57.05 turning back to the Old Testament, 00:01:57.08\00:01:58.41 they looked for a land. 00:01:58.45\00:01:59.91 What is it, whose builder or a city 00:01:59.95\00:02:01.58 whose builder and maker was God, 00:02:01.62\00:02:02.95 you know, it's not this, 00:02:02.98\00:02:04.72 but, you know, some of the religious conflicts 00:02:04.75\00:02:08.12 of all the religious conflicts, I think none is more 00:02:08.16\00:02:11.93 insoluble apparently than 00:02:11.96\00:02:14.06 what's happening in the Middle East in Jerusalem. 00:02:14.10\00:02:17.03 And let's talk about something that happened. 00:02:17.07\00:02:19.43 We were trying to figure the year, 00:02:19.47\00:02:20.80 wasn't about 2017? 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.24 Correct. Yeah. 00:02:22.27\00:02:23.61 President Trump, 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.94 I can't say it was a good or a bad thing, 00:02:25.97\00:02:27.81 but it was a gutsy move. 00:02:27.84\00:02:30.48 He recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. 00:02:30.51\00:02:34.45 Yes. And moved the US Embassy there. 00:02:34.48\00:02:37.85 So again, like you're mentioning whether good or bad 00:02:37.89\00:02:40.49 that's not so much the topic of discussion, 00:02:40.52\00:02:42.49 but more so 00:02:42.52\00:02:43.86 what are the religious ramifications 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.16 and how might that impact 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.46 church state relations aspects of national security 00:02:48.50\00:02:51.73 from Israel's perspective. 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.40 And, of course, the US in relation to that. 00:02:53.44\00:02:57.04 So, you know, one of the things as I did a little bit more 00:02:57.07\00:02:59.94 delving into and looking at the topic, 00:02:59.97\00:03:02.61 we do recognize that from an evangelical 00:03:02.64\00:03:05.48 Christian perspective, 00:03:05.51\00:03:07.55 many evangelicals that adopt the viewpoint 00:03:07.58\00:03:11.52 of prophecy being fulfilled from portions of Daniel 00:03:11.55\00:03:15.76 and some of the Book of Revelation as well. 00:03:15.79\00:03:18.76 They look at that kind of a move 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.36 on behalf of Israel as something that 00:03:21.40\00:03:23.20 is one of the necessary pieces 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.17 for prophecy to be fulfilled, i.e. 00:03:25.20\00:03:27.44 the United States supporting Israel 00:03:27.47\00:03:29.44 by having Jerusalem recognized 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.61 as the capital of the country and US as a major world player, 00:03:31.64\00:03:37.21 recognizing that and giving support 00:03:37.25\00:03:38.91 by moving our embassy there. 00:03:38.95\00:03:40.95 However, the other little details 00:03:40.98\00:03:43.05 that as I fine-tuned it, like 00:03:43.08\00:03:45.52 doing a little bit more research, 00:03:45.55\00:03:47.16 the eastern part of Jerusalem is where all of the holy sites 00:03:47.19\00:03:50.73 related to Bible prophecy are located, 00:03:50.76\00:03:53.26 and the US Embassy was actually moved 00:03:53.29\00:03:55.70 to the western part of Jerusalem 00:03:55.73\00:03:58.00 more like more modern Jerusalem. 00:03:58.03\00:04:00.04 It's a more grow, outgrowth of the modern era. 00:04:00.07\00:04:02.87 So technically it's not actually recognizing the... 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.41 The old city. 00:04:06.44\00:04:07.78 Correct. So that is one thing. 00:04:07.81\00:04:09.98 Very symbolic though. Yes. 00:04:10.01\00:04:11.35 Yeah, that much. 00:04:11.38\00:04:12.71 And the other thing I was going to mention along those lines, 00:04:12.75\00:04:15.42 it's interesting how that development took place 00:04:15.45\00:04:18.12 is that once President Trump 00:04:18.15\00:04:20.16 had been elected and was in office, 00:04:20.19\00:04:22.32 evangelicals began to appeal to him and put pressure, 00:04:22.36\00:04:26.39 but not from a religious perspective. 00:04:26.43\00:04:27.76 So in other words, 00:04:27.80\00:04:29.13 it's almost like they recognized 00:04:29.16\00:04:30.93 the principle of separation of church and state. 00:04:30.97\00:04:33.44 They didn't want to violate that 00:04:33.47\00:04:35.14 and therefore confound their plans. 00:04:35.17\00:04:37.51 So what they did is they focused on it 00:04:37.54\00:04:39.07 from the perspective of persuading Trump, 00:04:39.11\00:04:41.44 to see that kind of a move strategically 00:04:41.48\00:04:44.78 to strengthen US ties with Israel 00:04:44.81\00:04:47.42 and for Israeli security. 00:04:47.45\00:04:49.58 Basically they were saying, Israel is one 00:04:49.62\00:04:52.75 of our allies in the Middle, only ally in the Middle East. 00:04:52.79\00:04:55.19 And if we're wanting to present a united front 00:04:55.22\00:04:57.36 against Islamic terrorism, 00:04:57.39\00:04:59.46 make the move and therefore 00:04:59.49\00:05:00.83 it strengthens Israeli security, 00:05:00.86\00:05:02.43 it strengthens the US's foothold 00:05:02.46\00:05:03.80 in the Middle East. 00:05:03.83\00:05:05.17 I'm sure they said all of these things, 00:05:05.20\00:05:06.53 whether they are set, that is so. 00:05:06.57\00:05:08.10 Correct. 00:05:08.14\00:05:09.47 To be honest, I think it's been relatively quiet. 00:05:09.50\00:05:12.01 In fact, I think as we are filming this 00:05:12.04\00:05:14.61 with rockets flying in the Middle East 00:05:14.64\00:05:16.21 is the first big bump involving Israel. 00:05:16.24\00:05:19.28 I mean, obviously the Syrian conflict has just been 00:05:19.31\00:05:23.69 grinding on with loss of life and refugees and so on. 00:05:23.72\00:05:28.39 So it didn't have the immediately inflammatory 00:05:28.42\00:05:31.66 effect that I feared. 00:05:31.69\00:05:33.19 But, you know, you can spin it any way you want, 00:05:33.23\00:05:36.77 the religious right have a theological construct 00:05:36.80\00:05:41.87 and a reason for supporting Israel. 00:05:41.90\00:05:44.11 That was everything about why they pushed 00:05:44.14\00:05:47.18 for the recognition of Israel. 00:05:47.21\00:05:49.24 And, I was surprised that Israel went along 00:05:49.28\00:05:52.78 with it so easy because in this construct, 00:05:52.81\00:05:55.92 they're not so much concerned with Israelis 00:05:55.95\00:05:58.22 as their country. 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.39 They are sort of pawns to be swept away because, 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.43 you know, then Israel 00:06:03.46\00:06:04.79 is going to be knee deep in blood 00:06:04.83\00:06:07.76 and Armageddon and then Christ comes. 00:06:07.80\00:06:09.80 Yes. 00:06:09.83\00:06:11.17 In a perverse way, I don't think 00:06:11.20\00:06:13.67 the evangelical view of the end times 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.14 is much kinder to the Jews than the Islamic view. 00:06:16.17\00:06:19.11 The Islamic view is horrible. 00:06:19.14\00:06:21.14 You know, that Muhammad and Jesus, 00:06:21.18\00:06:24.08 and the 12 imams all appear 00:06:24.11\00:06:27.88 with the heavenly horde 00:06:27.92\00:06:30.32 and they're attacking the Antichrist 00:06:30.35\00:06:33.42 and his minions who are Jews, 00:06:33.46\00:06:36.42 and in Quranic or in Islamic writings it says 00:06:36.46\00:06:41.86 that the stones will cry out. 00:06:41.90\00:06:43.67 There is a Jew hiding behind me, 00:06:43.70\00:06:45.20 come and kill it. 00:06:45.23\00:06:47.04 And the evangelical view is not quite 00:06:47.07\00:06:48.94 so bloodthirsty to the Jewish nation, 00:06:48.97\00:06:50.61 but they're not really seen as the promised people, 00:06:50.64\00:06:52.77 particularly, it's, 00:06:52.81\00:06:54.28 they're just a way for us to get where we want to be. 00:06:54.31\00:06:57.01 Very sad. 00:06:57.05\00:06:58.38 But I think that's when they first started calling 00:06:58.41\00:07:01.75 ex-president Trump, Cyrus. 00:07:01.78\00:07:04.35 He was the promised one 00:07:04.39\00:07:05.72 that was delivering on all of that. 00:07:05.75\00:07:08.09 And what I think might be the next 00:07:08.12\00:07:12.26 significant development in the Middle East. 00:07:12.29\00:07:14.73 And I'd be interested in your comment. 00:07:14.76\00:07:16.56 Do you think there's going to be moves toward 00:07:16.60\00:07:20.07 either rebuilding the temple or effect simile 00:07:20.10\00:07:22.80 with a red heifer and the whole 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.97 reinstitution of the sacrificial system, 00:07:25.01\00:07:27.58 because that will bring the zealots out of the carpet. 00:07:27.61\00:07:32.98 Well, I think that certainly is in the offing, 00:07:33.01\00:07:36.99 in other words, that's the next step. 00:07:37.02\00:07:38.95 The reason I say that is that again in the background 00:07:38.99\00:07:42.59 and the research I did on the topic, 00:07:42.62\00:07:44.36 one of the things that across the board, 00:07:44.39\00:07:47.20 your conservative, evangelical Christians 00:07:47.23\00:07:49.40 like Pat Robertson and Hagin, 00:07:49.43\00:07:52.63 Kenneth Hagin, one of the Pentecostal 00:07:52.67\00:07:56.71 evangelists that based in Texas. 00:07:56.74\00:07:58.51 Very visible on television. 00:07:58.54\00:07:59.87 Both of them have made definitive statements. 00:07:59.91\00:08:02.31 They said that the line that we draw as far as we, 00:08:02.34\00:08:06.18 whether we give support, continued support 00:08:06.21\00:08:08.05 to Israel or not is whether they maintain 00:08:08.08\00:08:11.52 the unitary nature of Jerusalem 00:08:11.55\00:08:14.16 and recognize that as part of an essential part 00:08:14.19\00:08:18.19 of prophecy being fulfilled, or if they want to start 00:08:18.23\00:08:21.93 segregating it out and dividing it, i.e. 00:08:21.96\00:08:25.60 from a quick perspective, Israel may say, okay, 00:08:25.63\00:08:28.70 the US has moved their embassy over here 00:08:28.74\00:08:30.61 to Western Jerusalem. 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.11 Eastern Jerusalem is the location 00:08:32.14\00:08:33.91 of the holy sites. 00:08:33.94\00:08:35.28 And you do have Palestinians 00:08:35.31\00:08:37.08 that are claiming a portion of that 00:08:37.11\00:08:38.78 just as there are Jews. 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.15 There's The Church of the Holy Sepulcher 00:08:40.18\00:08:42.82 in Bethlehem is in Palestinian territory still. 00:08:42.85\00:08:45.35 Correct. 00:08:45.39\00:08:46.72 So if Israel should say, okay, to make a, some kind of a, 00:08:46.76\00:08:49.62 basically seeking a middle ground, 00:08:49.66\00:08:52.33 we will work with the Palestinians 00:08:52.36\00:08:53.96 and basically start carving it up. 00:08:54.00\00:08:56.50 That's where the evangelical conservative Christians 00:08:56.53\00:08:58.70 in America said, we're not negotiating on that. 00:08:58.73\00:09:01.50 So if Israel does that, we back out 00:09:01.54\00:09:03.34 and we don't support them anymore. 00:09:03.37\00:09:04.74 So it's kind of like drawing a line 00:09:04.77\00:09:06.47 in the sand and ultimatum 00:09:06.51\00:09:08.44 for Israel to fight and work, to maintain 00:09:08.48\00:09:11.31 that unitary part of the holy sites. 00:09:11.35\00:09:13.72 So, yes, to answer your question, 00:09:13.75\00:09:15.35 I see that based on that the dynamic there, 00:09:15.38\00:09:18.69 from the perspective 00:09:18.72\00:09:20.76 of evangelical conservative Christians, 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.79 that's the next step. 00:09:22.82\00:09:24.46 Yeah, I mean, on one level, 00:09:24.49\00:09:26.43 we've all gotten used to the reality of Israel 00:09:26.46\00:09:31.00 and I fall victim very often to retelling history, 00:09:31.03\00:09:34.87 but people should remember that the modern state of Israel 00:09:34.90\00:09:37.24 only dates back to the 50s and Zionism, 00:09:37.27\00:09:40.91 not much before World War II 00:09:40.94\00:09:44.81 and nor was it a religious movement 00:09:44.85\00:09:47.75 in essence, it was a yearning of a people. 00:09:47.78\00:09:53.19 And it's hard to even say ethnic, 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.22 you know, even Hitler and other enemies of 00:09:55.26\00:10:01.20 I think of truth have sort of flip flop 00:10:01.23\00:10:03.47 between a religious identity and some sort of racial marker, 00:10:03.50\00:10:07.30 you know, who were Jews. 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.34 Even in the Old Testament, it was anyone that came in 00:10:09.37\00:10:11.94 and honored the covenant, Rahab and others so. 00:10:11.97\00:10:16.44 But still this modern state of Israel 00:10:16.48\00:10:18.55 was of a socialist nature. 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.92 Remember they were combusted. 00:10:20.95\00:10:22.88 They were, you know, 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.25 the US muddy socialism and communism. 00:10:24.29\00:10:27.06 But I can tell you, the socialism 00:10:27.09\00:10:30.03 of the early state of Israel was communist. 00:10:30.06\00:10:33.60 I mean, not Eastern communism, 00:10:33.63\00:10:37.57 but it was not democracy in the classic sense. 00:10:37.60\00:10:40.14 It's come a long way. 00:10:40.17\00:10:41.67 I think we should have great sympathy for them, 00:10:41.70\00:10:45.84 the people wanting self-determination, 00:10:45.87\00:10:48.18 people defend, descended in many cases 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.31 from those who had escaped the Holocaust. 00:10:50.35\00:10:53.62 You know, it touches a nerve with much of the world, 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.45 but the sad reality is that they went back to a land 00:10:56.48\00:10:59.52 that had long since been occupied by others. 00:10:59.55\00:11:03.93 And I don't know, it's, I've thought many times 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.53 this is the modern day equivalent of the Gordian 00:11:06.56\00:11:09.53 knot of Alexander's time. 00:11:09.56\00:11:11.27 And he sliced through it. 00:11:11.30\00:11:12.93 And maybe Trump in a perverse way 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.47 was the closest to slicing through it. 00:11:15.50\00:11:18.41 It probably needs something radical 00:11:18.44\00:11:21.28 to change the status quo, but at the moment, 00:11:21.31\00:11:25.58 you know, I've visited there twice 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.42 and it's very invigorating. 00:11:28.45\00:11:29.78 And yet, as I was telling you in the break, 00:11:29.82\00:11:31.85 I remember standing in the shadow 00:11:31.89\00:11:34.19 of the dividing wall that snakes all 00:11:34.22\00:11:36.52 through and around Jerusalem 00:11:36.56\00:11:39.06 with young Israeli soldiers peering out the slip 00:11:39.09\00:11:41.56 with their sub machine guns. 00:11:41.60\00:11:42.93 I remember standing there, you know, five, ten foot away 00:11:42.96\00:11:46.27 talking to a Palestinian Christian 00:11:46.30\00:11:48.77 and him telling me how he was doubly ostracized, 00:11:48.80\00:11:53.07 kept out by the wall by Israelis 00:11:53.11\00:11:55.71 and victimized by fellow Palestinian Muslims. 00:11:55.74\00:12:00.58 There's just no winners in that part of the world in my view. 00:12:00.62\00:12:03.22 Yeah. 00:12:03.25\00:12:04.59 Because, you know, when you've got 00:12:04.62\00:12:06.32 at least in this situation, 00:12:06.35\00:12:08.09 you've got three different major faiths, 00:12:08.12\00:12:10.06 world faiths, right? 00:12:10.09\00:12:11.43 Global faiths, Christianity, Judaism, 00:12:11.46\00:12:13.66 and then also Islam, 00:12:13.70\00:12:15.20 each of them contending for certain areas 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.30 that they consider to be sacred, 00:12:17.33\00:12:19.27 and in some cases there's overlap 00:12:19.30\00:12:20.87 due to sacred texts that trace back 00:12:20.90\00:12:23.27 and you show an overlap of history and belief, right? 00:12:23.30\00:12:26.88 At the same time, you've got governments 00:12:26.91\00:12:28.91 that are on the scene interacting in all of that, 00:12:28.94\00:12:31.95 trying to work out 00:12:31.98\00:12:33.31 what's the best kind of solution, right? 00:12:33.35\00:12:36.15 And then you've got the United Nations as well, 00:12:36.18\00:12:38.15 getting involved in declaring that as an international site 00:12:38.19\00:12:41.12 and not just a national, like the nation of Israel site. 00:12:41.16\00:12:44.79 So yeah, it makes it for a very complex dynamic. 00:12:44.83\00:12:46.70 Yeah. 00:12:46.73\00:12:48.30 I don't know on this program we kind of have the solution, 00:12:48.33\00:12:50.10 but the solution has to be 00:12:50.13\00:12:53.77 along the lines of the charity 00:12:53.80\00:12:56.81 and love for fellow man that the Bible encourages it. 00:12:56.84\00:12:59.57 Isn't going to be hard headed, 00:12:59.61\00:13:01.61 you know, clearing out the enemy from his area 00:13:01.64\00:13:04.81 or who throws the most rockets 00:13:04.85\00:13:06.92 or who has the biggest delegation in the UN. 00:13:06.95\00:13:11.35 This might be a good time to take a break. 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.19 So we'll be back after a short break 00:13:13.22\00:13:14.89 to continue this discussion. 00:13:14.92\00:13:17.59
