Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.22\00:00:28.72 This is your program to draw you 00:00:28.76\00:00:31.03 in to the excitement of religious liberty 00:00:31.06\00:00:33.29 and some of the developments taking place around the world. 00:00:33.33\00:00:36.20 My name is Lincoln Steed, 22 years 00:00:36.23\00:00:39.00 I was editor of Liberty Magazine 00:00:39.03\00:00:40.84 and continuing this program 00:00:40.87\00:00:43.00 with my guest Ed Cooke. 00:00:43.04\00:00:47.28 How do I describe you? 00:00:47.31\00:00:48.88 Pastor, writer, written for Liberty Magazine 00:00:48.91\00:00:51.45 for many years, a doctorate 00:00:51.48\00:00:52.91 in church state studies from Baylor. 00:00:52.95\00:00:55.15 So you've got pretty good credentials. 00:00:55.18\00:00:56.99 Yeah. 00:00:57.02\00:00:58.35 And I've done a bit of lecturing, 00:00:58.39\00:00:59.72 you know, traveling and giving lectures. 00:00:59.75\00:01:01.09 In fact is probably the topic. 00:01:01.12\00:01:03.02 I'm sure we've talked about a little bit, 00:01:03.06\00:01:05.06 but we would discuss today would be dealing with Ukraine 00:01:05.09\00:01:07.90 and out of Soviet Union movement. 00:01:07.93\00:01:09.26 Yes, of course, yeah. 00:01:09.30\00:01:10.63 There's so many topics, but let's settle on that one. 00:01:10.67\00:01:14.40 I have a lot of opinions on Ukraine. 00:01:14.44\00:01:16.54 I've known a number of Ukrainians. 00:01:16.57\00:01:18.64 I remember being captivated by the history 00:01:18.67\00:01:21.28 of that region. 00:01:21.31\00:01:22.64 And in particular... 00:01:22.68\00:01:24.01 I even had a girlfriend from Ukraine. 00:01:24.05\00:01:25.38 Did you? Yeah. 00:01:25.41\00:01:26.75 Okay. Nice lady. 00:01:26.78\00:01:28.48 But beautiful women there, you know 00:01:28.52\00:01:32.09 where the most beautiful women are is defined variously, 00:01:32.12\00:01:35.42 but very nice people Ukrainians. 00:01:35.46\00:01:40.20 I remember very clearly 00:01:40.23\00:01:43.16 maybe 10, 15 years or more ago now 00:01:43.20\00:01:46.57 watching television. 00:01:46.60\00:01:47.94 And it was an interview with one of the top advisors 00:01:47.97\00:01:50.84 from Vladimir Putin. 00:01:50.87\00:01:53.78 And he was complaining about how, 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.08 although promises were given to Gorbachev 00:01:56.11\00:01:59.01 that if he allowed the Soviet Union to collapse 00:01:59.05\00:02:01.88 that the US and the Western allies 00:02:01.92\00:02:04.75 made a commitment not to use those separated satellites 00:02:04.79\00:02:08.66 as an alliance against Russia 00:02:08.69\00:02:12.36 which of course has been broken. 00:02:12.39\00:02:15.40 And he said, the last point he says, 00:02:15.43\00:02:20.10 if you ever tried to do that to Ukraine, he says, 00:02:20.14\00:02:23.44 we will not accept that. 00:02:23.47\00:02:24.97 That will be war. 00:02:25.01\00:02:26.71 That's where we are today, isn't it? 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.28 Yes, yes. 00:02:28.31\00:02:29.64 And I'm not, it's not for me to say 00:02:29.68\00:02:32.11 what's right or wrong, 00:02:32.15\00:02:33.48 but we should've seen this coming. 00:02:33.52\00:02:35.82 Now the Ukrainian situation, 00:02:35.85\00:02:40.06 of course, involves many aspects, 00:02:40.09\00:02:41.96 political and religious. 00:02:41.99\00:02:43.79 And I know you've got some real good insights. 00:02:43.83\00:02:45.79 Yes. 00:02:45.83\00:02:47.16 One of the things that I think is 00:02:47.20\00:02:48.56 maybe we could say 00:02:48.60\00:02:50.10 is part of the background, right? 00:02:50.13\00:02:51.47 The picture is dealing with the, 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.90 of course, the military conflict. 00:02:53.94\00:02:55.54 Now over in the Donbas region that, 00:02:55.57\00:02:58.67 you know, things happened back in 2014, 00:02:58.71\00:03:01.48 you had the annexation 00:03:01.51\00:03:06.15 of the not Croatia... 00:03:06.18\00:03:07.52 Crimea. 00:03:07.55\00:03:08.88 Yeah, Crimea, the annexation of Crimea. 00:03:08.92\00:03:10.72 And then, of course, things from there escalating 00:03:10.75\00:03:12.92 between the two countries and the... 00:03:12.95\00:03:15.76 From a religious liberty perspective, 00:03:15.79\00:03:18.19 one of the dominant themes in recent years 00:03:18.23\00:03:20.53 has revolved around 00:03:20.56\00:03:22.03 the role of the Russian Orthodox Church, 00:03:22.06\00:03:24.93 because at the time of the Soviet Union, 00:03:24.97\00:03:28.07 you had that church being the church 00:03:28.10\00:03:29.90 that served in all of the people. 00:03:29.94\00:03:31.34 It's the state church. Yes, state church of Russia. 00:03:31.37\00:03:34.08 And so now that you have 00:03:34.11\00:03:35.78 the dismantling of the Soviet Union 00:03:35.81\00:03:37.71 and these other countries that are now 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.08 four satellite countries around Russia, 00:03:39.11\00:03:42.98 you still have the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church 00:03:43.02\00:03:45.25 in those countries, but what do you do 00:03:45.29\00:03:47.69 when you've got Russia and Ukraine at war? 00:03:47.72\00:03:50.29 And you've got the same church 00:03:50.33\00:03:51.66 that crosses that national boundary, right? 00:03:51.69\00:03:55.40 So those are some issues related to religious freedom 00:03:55.43\00:03:59.20 that deal with the believers in each of those countries, 00:03:59.23\00:04:02.34 belonging to a single unitary church, 00:04:02.37\00:04:05.01 and both the governments of each of those countries 00:04:05.04\00:04:07.51 at odds with one another. 00:04:07.54\00:04:09.34 So it makes for a very unique dynamic. 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.35 And it's worth pointing out to our viewers 00:04:12.38\00:04:18.22 that this goes back 00:04:18.25\00:04:19.59 to the big split in Christendom. 00:04:19.62\00:04:22.52 You know, originally there was just one Christian Church 00:04:22.56\00:04:25.73 that was progressively. 00:04:25.76\00:04:27.86 I could even use the word hijack 00:04:27.90\00:04:29.26 by the Bishop of Rome 00:04:29.30\00:04:31.03 following the collapse of the of the Roman Empire. 00:04:31.07\00:04:35.70 But then what was it, 00:04:35.74\00:04:37.41 was around the year 1000, wasn't it? 00:04:37.44\00:04:38.77 1054. 00:04:38.81\00:04:40.14 1054, the... 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.94 I'm trying to think of the term they give to it... 00:04:42.98\00:04:44.38 Schism. 00:04:44.41\00:04:45.75 The great schism or schism in Christianity. 00:04:45.78\00:04:48.58 And it was largely over the authority of the pope 00:04:48.62\00:04:52.09 and the trinity 00:04:52.12\00:04:56.59 and a few procedural matters on the mass and so on. 00:04:56.62\00:05:00.10 But that's the big split. 00:05:00.13\00:05:01.46 And so it's the Orthodox Churches, 00:05:01.50\00:05:03.77 which includes the Russian Orthodox, 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.60 the Eastern Orthodox in Greece and other places. 00:05:05.63\00:05:08.77 But it's all that blocks of Orthodox Church, 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.61 block of churches 00:05:10.64\00:05:11.97 and Roman Catholic which then split up 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.88 the reformation between Catholic and Protestant. 00:05:13.91\00:05:16.54 And that divide is real. 00:05:16.58\00:05:20.18 And in an earlier program, we talked about World War II, 00:05:20.22\00:05:24.29 where the papacy allied with Germany 00:05:24.32\00:05:28.72 and the papacy sort of had a double whammy in mind 00:05:28.76\00:05:31.29 because they wanted to wipe out communism 00:05:31.33\00:05:32.93 and denature their religious competitors 00:05:32.96\00:05:36.30 in the Eastern Orthodox Church. 00:05:36.33\00:05:37.67 Yeah. 00:05:37.70\00:05:39.03 And just like the Church of England 00:05:39.07\00:05:42.27 identified during the American Revolution 00:05:42.30\00:05:45.27 with the loyalist forces. 00:05:45.31\00:05:47.24 I think the Eastern Orthodox Church 00:05:47.28\00:05:48.61 have been caught with this, haven't they? 00:05:48.64\00:05:49.98 Between Russia and Ukraine, 00:05:50.01\00:05:51.61 because they're nationally identified that, 00:05:51.65\00:05:54.12 hey, you're fighting Russia. 00:05:54.15\00:05:55.48 And here You remember the Russian Orthodox,... 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.39 I think they're in a difficult spot. 00:05:58.42\00:05:59.75 For sure. 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.12 So how have they been resolving this? 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.76 Yes, so believers in Ukraine 00:06:02.79\00:06:05.03 that have belonged to the Russian Orthodox Church 00:06:05.06\00:06:07.96 once the war started exactly 00:06:08.00\00:06:10.93 at the point that you made is that they're kind of 00:06:10.97\00:06:13.03 in between a rock 00:06:13.07\00:06:14.94 and a hard place in the sense that 00:06:14.97\00:06:16.44 they're Ukrainian citizens, 00:06:16.47\00:06:17.81 they're faithful to their country. 00:06:17.84\00:06:19.21 They're not disloyal, but at the same time, 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.74 in their faith 00:06:21.78\00:06:23.11 they have belonged to the Russian Orthodox Church. 00:06:23.14\00:06:24.58 So this church that spans 00:06:24.61\00:06:26.48 two different countries across the border 00:06:26.51\00:06:29.75 what they ended up doing as an initial solution 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.79 they tried to do was establish 00:06:32.82\00:06:34.82 the Moscow Patriarchate for those that lived in Russia. 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.73 And the Kiev Patriarchate 00:06:38.76\00:06:40.60 for those that lived in Ukraine 00:06:40.63\00:06:42.46 and still part of the same unitary 00:06:42.50\00:06:44.33 Russian Orthodox Church. 00:06:44.37\00:06:45.97 Well, as the conflict developed further 00:06:46.00\00:06:48.64 between the two countries along military lines 00:06:48.67\00:06:51.47 and losses of up to 14,000 individuals lost that, 00:06:51.51\00:06:55.74 losing their lives of Ukrainian soldiers, 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.35 of course, things became much more bitter 00:06:58.38\00:07:00.52 and very protracted between the two countries 00:07:00.55\00:07:04.79 and things reaching a media national level and so forth. 00:07:04.82\00:07:08.42 So leadership in Ukraine 00:07:08.46\00:07:10.23 decided that what they wanted to do 00:07:10.26\00:07:12.59 was actually separate completely 00:07:12.63\00:07:14.73 from the Russian Orthodox Church. 00:07:14.76\00:07:16.56 And there was discussion for a period of time 00:07:16.60\00:07:18.43 about forming the Ukrainian Orthodox Church 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.40 and making a complete break. 00:07:21.44\00:07:23.71 Well, the people that were part of the church 00:07:23.74\00:07:26.27 that were living in Ukraine, 00:07:26.31\00:07:27.64 there was some pushback on that. 00:07:27.68\00:07:29.04 They felt that government shouldn't get involved 00:07:29.08\00:07:31.15 in the religious sphere. 00:07:31.18\00:07:32.85 Well, I can tell... 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.22 Without knowing all of it, 00:07:34.25\00:07:35.58 I could tell you what clearly would be a part of it. 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.49 And it's the thing that lies behind the conflict in general, 00:07:37.52\00:07:41.66 the Soviet Union under Stalin 00:07:41.69\00:07:44.33 particularly moved people around. 00:07:44.36\00:07:47.96 I remember going to Latvia, 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.67 little country of only a few million people, 00:07:50.70\00:07:53.44 but at the time of their recent independence, 00:07:53.47\00:07:56.07 they were 50% Russian national... 00:07:56.10\00:07:59.77 Well, ethnic Russians moved there. 00:07:59.81\00:08:02.21 So when you move people around, you change the dynamic. 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.91 So I'm sure, even though Ukraine is a separate country, 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.78 many of those members of the now Ukrainian 00:08:08.82\00:08:11.59 Orthodox Church are Russians. 00:08:11.62\00:08:13.62 So they're not gonna be happy with that either. 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.36 True. 00:08:15.39\00:08:16.73 And, you know, Stalin's long gone 00:08:16.76\00:08:19.96 and I don't think the present 00:08:20.00\00:08:21.76 Russian leadership 00:08:21.80\00:08:23.13 are interested in playing that game, 00:08:23.16\00:08:24.83 but they have to play it because of the reality. 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.74 And remember, Hitler tried that, 00:08:27.77\00:08:29.17 that was really the logic 00:08:29.20\00:08:34.11 for causing World War II. 00:08:34.14\00:08:35.48 Yeah. 00:08:35.51\00:08:36.85 Protecting your not fellow citizens, 00:08:36.88\00:08:40.18 but fellow ethnic Germans in his case 00:08:40.22\00:08:42.58 in another country. 00:08:42.62\00:08:44.59 So even though you're talking about a religious conflict, 00:08:44.62\00:08:47.09 it's not at all separated from the political conflict. 00:08:47.12\00:08:50.69 True. 00:08:50.73\00:08:52.06 So in Ukraine, as things developed further, 00:08:52.09\00:08:55.56 the believers that were 00:08:55.60\00:08:58.27 before they actually made the break 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.50 and organized the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 00:09:01.54\00:09:04.54 what, before that time or leading up to it, 00:09:04.57\00:09:06.34 I should say, 00:09:06.37\00:09:07.71 those that were part of 00:09:07.74\00:09:09.08 the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine. 00:09:09.11\00:09:11.71 They wanted to show themselves 00:09:11.75\00:09:13.18 as faithful Ukrainian citizens, 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.55 and they wanted to have their pilgrimage that they wanted to, 00:09:15.58\00:09:20.12 they designed a one part of believers 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.99 coming from the western part of the Ukraine, 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.83 the other part coming from the eastern part of the Ukraine 00:09:24.86\00:09:27.30 meeting together in Kiev, 00:09:27.33\00:09:30.03 and basically thus signifying east and west unified 00:09:30.07\00:09:34.04 across the country to... 00:09:34.07\00:09:35.97 For the whole, all of Ukraine to see 00:09:36.00\00:09:37.41 and recognize this pilgrimage 00:09:37.44\00:09:39.04 is bringing the two sides together 00:09:39.07\00:09:40.71 that they are faithful Ukrainians, 00:09:40.74\00:09:42.34 even though they're part of the Russian Orthodox Church. 00:09:42.38\00:09:44.38 Well, the concern from a national security perspective 00:09:44.41\00:09:48.22 is that some of the leadership in Ukraine felt, 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.79 well, while these people that 00:09:50.82\00:09:52.82 are part of the Moscow Patriarchate, 00:09:52.85\00:09:54.66 even though they're Ukrainian citizens, 00:09:54.69\00:09:56.32 there could be other elements among them, i.e. 00:09:56.36\00:09:59.03 Russians or people that would cause 00:09:59.06\00:10:00.83 inside rebellion. 00:10:00.86\00:10:02.30 Russia Eastern Orthodox... Yes. 00:10:02.33\00:10:04.07 Living in Ukraine. 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.43 Yes, that was their concern. 00:10:05.47\00:10:07.04 And so that started to evolve into discussion 00:10:07.07\00:10:10.51 at the public on the public level 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.87 national level newspapers and so forth. 00:10:12.91\00:10:15.11 And what happened is the Ukrainian, 00:10:15.14\00:10:17.68 the state security service of Ukraine 00:10:17.71\00:10:19.81 also got involved and they did identify, 00:10:19.85\00:10:22.65 I think it was just a few instances, 00:10:22.68\00:10:24.59 maybe one person or two that had pro-Russian flags 00:10:24.62\00:10:28.46 that were part of the group along the way, 00:10:28.49\00:10:30.93 'cause the movement as the pilgrimage moved 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.06 towards Ukraine, more people joined. 00:10:33.09\00:10:35.46 So taking a few photos of that 00:10:35.50\00:10:37.57 and then publishing that in a booklet format 00:10:37.60\00:10:40.54 that the state security service of Ukraine did, 00:10:40.57\00:10:43.64 the journalist in Ukraine obtained copies. 00:10:43.67\00:10:46.44 And, of course, once it hit the tabloids and the news, 00:10:46.47\00:10:48.51 it just kind of went national. 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.38 And at that point, everybody said, 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.98 no, this is actually a movement 00:10:52.01\00:10:53.48 to overthrow the government in Kiev. 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.45 So things really started 00:10:56.48\00:10:58.35 to spin out of control at that point. 00:10:58.39\00:11:00.59 But it just does... 00:11:00.62\00:11:01.96 It goes to emphasize the aspect of how religion, 00:11:01.99\00:11:04.99 especially if it's closely identified with government 00:11:05.03\00:11:08.06 can be something that, 00:11:08.10\00:11:09.43 I mean, it has explosive potential, right? 00:11:09.46\00:11:12.07 Things can really go in a wrong direction 00:11:12.10\00:11:14.37 or be misinterpreted. 00:11:14.40\00:11:15.74 Yeah. 00:11:15.77\00:11:17.11 And the role of the Orthodox Church 00:11:17.14\00:11:20.01 in Eastern Europe has been powerful 00:11:20.04\00:11:22.24 and communism didn't do much, couldn't do much 00:11:22.28\00:11:25.35 to diminish it even though Stalin sent... 00:11:25.38\00:11:28.58 Was a huge number, 00:11:28.62\00:11:29.95 I think 50,000 priests were executed. 00:11:29.98\00:11:31.99 Yeah. 00:11:32.02\00:11:33.36 But once communism evaporated, 00:11:33.39\00:11:35.26 we find that Eastern Orthodox 00:11:35.29\00:11:37.36 identity very, very strong. 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.13 And as you and I were talking before this program 00:11:39.16\00:11:42.16 Vladimir Putin has been at great pains 00:11:42.20\00:11:44.67 to show solidarity with the Eastern Orthodox. 00:11:44.70\00:11:48.14 And I think Kirill is still the patriarch, 00:11:48.17\00:11:51.41 but he gave him an office 00:11:51.44\00:11:53.78 in the Kremlin, right? 00:11:53.81\00:11:57.71 Very close to his church and state together. 00:11:57.75\00:12:02.25 But we wish them the best. 00:12:02.28\00:12:03.62 We don't want religious or political conflict. 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.75 Yeah. 00:12:05.79\00:12:07.12 And any religion practiced 00:12:07.16\00:12:09.32 sincerely should lead to harmony and brotherhood. 00:12:09.36\00:12:12.16 But that's not the case very often, 00:12:12.19\00:12:15.76 but even as you're talking about this, 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.03 I'm reminded of something in the not so distant future. 00:12:18.07\00:12:21.24 Remember the United States intervene with 00:12:21.27\00:12:24.74 other European powers in the Balkans, 00:12:24.77\00:12:29.38 the thing there with Yugoslavia and breakaway Kosovo, 00:12:29.41\00:12:32.31 it was Bosnia first, then Kosovo. 00:12:32.35\00:12:35.15 And I remember a crucial point 00:12:35.18\00:12:38.09 when the Serbians were under attack, 00:12:38.12\00:12:43.46 a Russian military convoy came down, 00:12:43.49\00:12:46.83 basically a flying wedge across... 00:12:46.86\00:12:49.20 I'm trying to think of my geography. 00:12:49.23\00:12:51.20 They had to go across some rather unfriendly land 00:12:51.23\00:12:54.30 to get there, but they ran a rescue mission 00:12:54.34\00:12:56.50 to help their fellow Eastern Orthodox 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.84 in the Balkans. 00:12:58.87\00:13:00.21 Yeah. So the ties are very strong. 00:13:00.24\00:13:02.01 Yeah. 00:13:02.04\00:13:03.38 And further back, I can remember growing up 00:13:03.41\00:13:05.38 my father telling me stories of World War II 00:13:05.41\00:13:08.58 just to... 00:13:08.62\00:13:10.15 Now that area of the Balkans, 00:13:10.19\00:13:12.19 just across the Adriatic from Italy, 00:13:12.22\00:13:14.62 very close it's almost like a lake across. 00:13:14.66\00:13:16.99 I remember that when we flew across 00:13:17.03\00:13:19.13 5-10-minute flight, no more. 00:13:19.16\00:13:21.53 And the Serbs and the Croats, 00:13:21.56\00:13:25.53 the Eastern Orthodox 00:13:25.57\00:13:26.97 and the Catholics fought bitterly, 00:13:27.00\00:13:28.54 and there were horrible abuses. 00:13:28.57\00:13:30.27 Yeah. 00:13:30.31\00:13:31.64 Perpetrated there at World War II. 00:13:31.67\00:13:34.01 So those people of those faith, they remember that stuff, 00:13:34.04\00:13:37.38 those sort of conflict. 00:13:37.41\00:13:39.01 We've gotten used to the Palestinian Israeli 00:13:39.05\00:13:42.08 divide in the Middle East. 00:13:42.12\00:13:43.45 And that's... 00:13:43.49\00:13:44.82 Well, it goes back to Bible times, but as far as 00:13:44.85\00:13:47.36 the political dislocation, it's a lifetime, 00:13:47.39\00:13:49.96 but these other things, they go back. 00:13:49.99\00:13:51.96 Centuries. Many, many centuries. 00:13:51.99\00:13:54.46 So yeah, there's this thing in Kiev 00:13:54.50\00:14:00.04 around Kiev is we have to pray for them. 00:14:00.07\00:14:03.64 What else in that area has taken your attention? 00:14:03.67\00:14:05.51 But maybe we should take a break first. 00:14:05.54\00:14:07.04 We've reached a nice break point. 00:14:07.08\00:14:08.78 So stay with us. 00:14:08.81\00:14:10.15 And we'll cast our net around this world 00:14:10.18\00:14:13.11 to see where there are some interesting religious 00:14:13.15\00:14:16.42 and religious liberty anomalies. 00:14:16.45\00:14:17.85
