Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, we spent some time. 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.47 And I think it's an interesting time 00:00:04.50\00:00:06.37 talking about North Korea and the difficult situation, 00:00:06.40\00:00:10.31 but the small signs of Christian understanding 00:00:10.34\00:00:15.94 and perhaps one day an opening for Christianity there. 00:00:15.98\00:00:19.01 But let's talk about India. 00:00:19.05\00:00:20.38 Sure. 00:00:20.42\00:00:21.75 You know, after in the west, I think we're ignoring India. 00:00:21.78\00:00:26.35 We see China as a growing political power which it is, 00:00:26.39\00:00:29.46 in fact, it's superseded in some ways 00:00:29.49\00:00:31.96 the US economically. 00:00:31.99\00:00:34.53 India is at close second. 00:00:34.56\00:00:35.90 Yes. 00:00:35.93\00:00:37.27 It's a developing area, massive. 00:00:37.30\00:00:39.37 In Bangalore they have their own Silicon Center. 00:00:39.40\00:00:43.87 Yep, their own. Yeah. 00:00:43.91\00:00:45.27 In fact, you know, I actually had a chance 00:00:45.31\00:00:46.98 to visit India back in 2017. 00:00:47.01\00:00:50.15 And some of the things that I learned, 00:00:50.18\00:00:51.88 it was just fascinating as far as, 00:00:51.91\00:00:53.68 for example, in technology. 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.78 I mean, they've got people that are even gurus, 00:00:55.82\00:00:58.75 you might say, 00:00:58.79\00:01:00.12 with algorithms and math and doing the numbers for, 00:01:00.16\00:01:04.39 you know, cyber work and all of that, 00:01:04.43\00:01:06.03 they're completely very, very high 00:01:06.06\00:01:08.36 well-developed programs that they have there. 00:01:08.40\00:01:10.00 Yeah, I mean there's gross poverty there. 00:01:10.03\00:01:12.17 And the population there, they're over a billion people. 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.54 Right, but it's a growing economic power technologically 00:01:14.57\00:01:20.04 and even geopolitically very few people 00:01:20.08\00:01:23.31 seem to be aware that this is a hot... 00:01:23.35\00:01:25.51 Already a hot fighting war on the border 00:01:25.55\00:01:27.42 between China and India. 00:01:27.45\00:01:28.78 Yeah. 00:01:28.82\00:01:30.59 The other day there was a conflict 00:01:30.62\00:01:32.12 where I think it was about 00:01:32.15\00:01:33.49 a hundred Chinese soldiers were killed. 00:01:33.52\00:01:34.86 Yeah. 00:01:34.89\00:01:36.22 So it's going to shape current events, 00:01:36.26\00:01:37.59 but on religion. 00:01:37.63\00:01:39.19 Yeah. 00:01:39.23\00:01:40.56 When I was there, the thing that I learned 00:01:40.60\00:01:43.50 as I visited different Christian groups 00:01:43.53\00:01:45.83 from the south, all the way up to almost a further, 00:01:45.87\00:01:48.70 well, I got midway up into the country 00:01:48.74\00:01:50.87 and I didn't go further because they warned me. 00:01:50.91\00:01:53.58 They said, the further north you go, 00:01:53.61\00:01:55.41 the more Hindu standing it is, 00:01:55.44\00:01:57.21 meaning that they're more very traditional Hindus. 00:01:57.25\00:02:00.12 And as you probably learned, 00:02:00.15\00:02:01.62 we say India, but who is an Indian? 00:02:01.65\00:02:04.62 There are many tribal and ethnic groups. 00:02:04.65\00:02:06.86 It's a very diverse and huge country. 00:02:06.89\00:02:10.36 Interesting country. 00:02:10.39\00:02:11.73 Yes, for sure. 00:02:11.76\00:02:13.09 With a great history and a history of Christianity, 00:02:13.13\00:02:14.90 you remember the... 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.60 I think it's a little more than tradition, 00:02:16.63\00:02:18.20 but the traditional story 00:02:18.23\00:02:19.57 is that Thomas came up I think to Goa, isn't it? 00:02:19.60\00:02:21.90 Correct. Yep. 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.27 Yeah. Soâ | 00:02:23.30\00:02:24.64 And spread the gospel there. 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.01 And then, of course, Western Christian missionaries 00:02:26.04\00:02:27.58 were there pretty early. 00:02:27.61\00:02:29.01 And well-known Mother Teresa. 00:02:29.04\00:02:30.71 Yes. 00:02:30.75\00:02:32.08 You know, had orphanage in India. 00:02:32.11\00:02:33.45 And the colonial experience, 00:02:33.48\00:02:38.32 which, you know, you can find a lot of problems with it, 00:02:38.35\00:02:40.92 but if anywhere in the world of colonial experience 00:02:40.96\00:02:43.12 seems to have shaped India, the bureaucracy 00:02:43.16\00:02:45.89 and the edifices of English rule 00:02:45.93\00:02:49.43 are pretty much the same. 00:02:49.46\00:02:50.80 Yes. 00:02:50.83\00:02:52.17 And the habits die hard. 00:02:52.20\00:02:53.54 And, of course, the respect for religion, 00:02:53.57\00:02:57.01 and it's a deeply religious country. 00:02:57.04\00:02:58.91 For sure. 00:02:58.94\00:03:00.28 Many religions, Hinduism and as Buddhism and Islam. 00:03:00.31\00:03:04.78 There's Persian emergence, yes. 00:03:04.81\00:03:06.21 Yes. 00:03:06.25\00:03:07.58 'Cause the country's of borders influenced it 00:03:07.62\00:03:09.08 and strong Christianity. 00:03:09.12\00:03:10.69 Yeah. 00:03:10.72\00:03:12.05 You know, the, the concern though 00:03:12.09\00:03:13.96 that I have from visiting there 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.06 and also studying kind of the trajectory from 2017 00:03:16.09\00:03:19.83 onward is that you've got the current administration 00:03:19.86\00:03:24.37 that is very strongly leaning in favor 00:03:24.40\00:03:29.00 of recognizing India as Hindustani. 00:03:29.04\00:03:32.31 In other words, that's the name 00:03:32.34\00:03:33.68 they would like to really revert it 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.91 to and to emphasize the influence of religion. 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.08 We're back to Hindustan, aren't we? 00:03:39.11\00:03:41.98 We made a comment on another program 00:03:42.02\00:03:43.75 that whenever there's a stan after a country, 00:03:43.79\00:03:45.85 there's a little trouble. 00:03:45.89\00:03:47.22 Yes. 00:03:47.26\00:03:49.59 So Hindustan being the original name. 00:03:49.62\00:03:52.06 The land of the Hindus. 00:03:52.09\00:03:53.43 Yes. 00:03:53.46\00:03:54.93 So based on that Hindu being more and more becoming 00:03:54.96\00:03:59.33 recognized as the national religion 00:03:59.37\00:04:01.87 and therefore other groups 00:04:01.90\00:04:03.61 that are minorities like Christianity, 00:04:03.64\00:04:05.61 Islam, and so forth, 00:04:05.64\00:04:07.01 being ostracized from public forums, 00:04:07.04\00:04:10.65 their opinion and viewpoint not having as much weight 00:04:10.68\00:04:13.38 in public discussion and even some of their institutions 00:04:13.42\00:04:16.45 actually being closed or funding being restricted. 00:04:16.48\00:04:21.06 You know, one of the concerns that when I was there, 00:04:21.09\00:04:23.49 that Kristen shared with me is that, 00:04:23.53\00:04:26.59 whereas in the past they were able to receive 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.36 the monetary donations from outside of the country, 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.00 i.e. other countries that would send it in 00:04:32.03\00:04:33.94 to support their school, 00:04:33.97\00:04:35.30 Christian schools or their churches, 00:04:35.34\00:04:37.34 their mission projects, et cetera. 00:04:37.37\00:04:39.24 That is something that the Indian government 00:04:39.27\00:04:40.98 now is using their secret service 00:04:41.01\00:04:43.01 to monitor as those funds come in, 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.15 because they're looking at those groups 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.85 as being divisive to the state and potentially people 00:04:46.88\00:04:50.45 that are enemies of the state. 00:04:50.49\00:04:51.95 Yeah. 00:04:51.99\00:04:53.32 India was very influential to me. 00:04:53.36\00:04:55.19 I was... 00:04:55.22\00:04:56.56 I've been there a couple of times, 00:04:56.59\00:04:57.93 but the first time I was barely out of my teens 00:04:57.96\00:05:01.10 and we went there as a family on the way 00:05:01.13\00:05:04.17 back to Australia because my father had moved 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.77 to the US as a missionary 00:05:06.80\00:05:09.10 from Australia within our church. 00:05:09.14\00:05:12.31 And I saw the dynamic situation of India and people, 00:05:12.34\00:05:17.65 the overwhelming level of people 00:05:17.68\00:05:19.71 was quite shocking to my system. 00:05:19.75\00:05:21.58 And I'm sure you had that same feeling. 00:05:21.62\00:05:24.55 And so I saw the need and the church, 00:05:24.59\00:05:27.22 Adventist Church, 00:05:27.26\00:05:28.59 the Christian Church doing fairly well, 00:05:28.62\00:05:30.73 and many Adventists were joining the church, 00:05:30.76\00:05:34.16 but anybody that had a means and the right initiative, 00:05:34.20\00:05:39.20 a lot of them were going to the US to study 00:05:39.23\00:05:42.60 and not coming back. 00:05:42.64\00:05:43.97 And that shaped my thinking. 00:05:44.01\00:05:45.47 And I determined after visiting India 00:05:45.51\00:05:48.11 that I would go back to Australia, 00:05:48.14\00:05:50.71 which I did after I graduated from Andrews with MA, 00:05:50.75\00:05:56.45 not a doctorate. 00:05:56.48\00:05:59.29 I went back, but I intended to stay there forever. 00:05:59.32\00:06:02.26 And it was only a special call to be a missionary again 00:06:02.29\00:06:05.43 to America that I came back. 00:06:05.46\00:06:07.50 But so it was very pivotal with me. 00:06:07.53\00:06:09.73 And I still tell my wife every now and again, 00:06:09.76\00:06:11.87 when she gets antsy with me. 00:06:11.90\00:06:14.04 I say, you should go to India to, you know, 00:06:14.07\00:06:18.64 there's an awful lot of wonderful people in India, 00:06:18.67\00:06:21.18 they're scrambling for existence, 00:06:21.21\00:06:23.21 trying very hard even to be a beggar 00:06:23.24\00:06:25.38 in some places is hard work. 00:06:25.41\00:06:29.25 To see parents, did you see it with twisted 00:06:29.28\00:06:31.69 little kids with twisted arms 00:06:31.72\00:06:33.05 and that parents will often do that, 00:06:33.09\00:06:34.52 that way they're guaranteed a security as a beggar. 00:06:34.56\00:06:37.73 Yeah. 00:06:37.76\00:06:39.09 And even the taxi driver. 00:06:39.13\00:06:40.80 I remember how, I remember him telling us, 00:06:40.83\00:06:42.96 he says, you like my loyalty sahab, 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.57 my loyalty? 00:06:44.60\00:06:45.93 You know, life is a book that I love on World War I. 00:06:45.97\00:06:49.60 Says, life is not a game, but a grim struggle. 00:06:49.64\00:06:52.87 And for many people in India, that's the case. 00:06:52.91\00:06:54.71 Yeah. 00:06:54.74\00:06:56.08 And yet they're rich in culture and their religious views 00:06:56.11\00:06:58.71 are very multidimensional. 00:06:58.75\00:07:01.98 True. 00:07:02.02\00:07:03.35 And I think that the challenge that one finds there 00:07:03.39\00:07:06.49 in the country of India is that not only from, 00:07:06.52\00:07:10.53 you know, the constitution grants religious freedom, 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.13 it's how it's actually applied. 00:07:13.16\00:07:15.26 Because when I was there 00:07:15.30\00:07:16.87 in the Southern part of the state, 00:07:16.90\00:07:18.73 you've got, it's almost like living 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.24 in a part of the West, right? 00:07:20.27\00:07:21.77 Because there's so much freedoms, 00:07:21.80\00:07:24.01 freedom of expression, freedom of religion. 00:07:24.04\00:07:26.91 The churches don't have issues with trying to obtain property 00:07:26.94\00:07:30.48 and build churches and proselytize, 00:07:30.51\00:07:33.11 but the more, the further north you go, 00:07:33.15\00:07:35.25 it's more centered around Hinduism. 00:07:35.28\00:07:39.49 And that's actually where they've had play, 00:07:39.52\00:07:41.09 some of the villages were devout 00:07:41.12\00:07:44.46 as I call it devout, or maybe I could just say veryâ | 00:07:44.49\00:07:47.46 Hindu nationalists, 00:07:47.50\00:07:48.83 they identify being a Hindu mostly an Indian. 00:07:48.86\00:07:50.57 Yeah. 00:07:50.60\00:07:51.93 They attack Christians and, you know, cut off arms and limbs, 00:07:51.97\00:07:56.07 burn them, all kinds of attacks. 00:07:56.10\00:07:58.44 I don't know the breakdown of laws within India, 00:07:58.47\00:08:01.88 but India generally, in its overall constitution 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.95 has adopted many Western liberal concepts of, you know, 00:08:04.98\00:08:09.68 bringing all together aside. 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.75 In my view, the biggest problem is not laws, it's communities. 00:08:11.79\00:08:16.29 And those communities that you mentioned 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.39 where there's the strong prejudicial atmosphere 00:08:18.43\00:08:22.63 or attitude toward non-Hindus usually, 00:08:22.66\00:08:25.83 but there's Christian and Muslim and other, 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.80 remember Pakistan is a product of that. 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.57 They had a civil war on religion 00:08:30.61\00:08:32.44 and that which caused the formation of Pakistan. 00:08:32.47\00:08:35.14 And then in my lifetime, 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.01 they fought with the East Pakistan, 00:08:37.05\00:08:40.52 which then became Bangladesh. 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.28 It was a country that was split by a civil war. 00:08:42.32\00:08:45.92 So I don't think the laws are the major problem in India, 00:08:45.95\00:08:50.19 but the cultural, tribal, 00:08:50.23\00:08:53.03 regional aspect of different religions 00:08:53.06\00:08:55.36 and commensurate with that often 00:08:55.40\00:08:57.63 the low education in the village level. 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.63 Yeah. 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.00 There's periodically just, you know, 00:09:01.04\00:09:03.81 where a hundred people are killed 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.17 in an orgy of murders in a little town. 00:09:05.21\00:09:09.51 You know, another thing I think related though on that, 00:09:09.54\00:09:12.41 this topic of looking at the global perspective 00:09:12.45\00:09:15.55 of countries and kind of movements, right? 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.39 So there is an element of nationalism 00:09:17.42\00:09:19.85 that again is trying to blend 00:09:19.89\00:09:21.42 in with religion making Hindu... 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.19 Hinduism, the national religion, 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.16 and the current administration with that focus, 00:09:26.19\00:09:29.93 they're wanting to lead it 00:09:29.96\00:09:31.30 in the direction of maybe by 2025, 00:09:31.33\00:09:34.30 having that established as a part of the nation. 00:09:34.34\00:09:37.37 Yeah, and there's something going on, you're right, 00:09:37.41\00:09:39.61 in a visible level, I noticed that the other day 00:09:39.64\00:09:42.74 that Prime Minister Modi, he said, yeah Modi. 00:09:42.78\00:09:46.01 Yep, Modi. 00:09:46.05\00:09:47.38 You know, I remember no more than about 00:09:47.42\00:09:49.12 two years ago, seeing him with Putin at a public meeting, 00:09:49.15\00:09:52.12 very westernized looking clean shave in Goa, 00:09:52.15\00:09:56.12 no criticism of you, but now he's like an Indian sadhu 00:09:56.16\00:10:01.66 he's got a long flowing white beard. 00:10:01.70\00:10:04.53 And so I don't think it's just a personal, 00:10:04.57\00:10:07.94 you know, adornment, 00:10:10.94\00:10:12.27 I think he's just throwing a signal 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.58 to this more ancestral religious view 00:10:14.61\00:10:18.25 of what it is to be Indian. 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.71 So there's something going on. You're right. 00:10:19.75\00:10:21.85 For sure. 00:10:21.88\00:10:23.22 So India and North Korea, right? 00:10:23.25\00:10:27.96 Where do we go from here on that? 00:10:27.99\00:10:29.32 Yeah. 00:10:29.36\00:10:30.69 You know, I think that certainly as Christians, 00:10:30.73\00:10:32.36 we recognize the global picture 00:10:32.39\00:10:35.06 and the need of Christians around the world. 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.63 And certainly, in these countries, 00:10:37.67\00:10:39.60 we've talked about North Korea and India 00:10:39.63\00:10:41.74 taking time to pray for them on a daily basis. 00:10:41.77\00:10:44.91 Not only for those of our own faith, 00:10:44.94\00:10:46.61 but other Christian groups that face daily challenges 00:10:46.64\00:10:50.25 to live out their faith in those countries. 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.65 And as we do that, we can be assured that Christ 00:10:52.68\00:10:54.78 will answer our prayers 00:10:54.82\00:10:56.15 on behalf of believers globally. 00:10:56.18\00:10:57.85
