Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.00 Before the break with guest Ed Cooke, 00:00:03.03\00:00:05.63 we've been getting into the weeds 00:00:05.67\00:00:07.00 of what really grows out of that January 6 image 00:00:07.04\00:00:12.34 that people were transfixed by, 00:00:12.37\00:00:13.94 but particularly I was taken by the prayer session up front. 00:00:13.98\00:00:18.68 And we've been talking about 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.35 the theocratic yearnings of the United States. 00:00:20.38\00:00:24.79 And I think that's what it is 00:00:24.82\00:00:26.29 because it goes back to the very beginning, 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.16 the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 00:00:28.19\00:00:30.33 the Boston experiments there with 00:00:30.36\00:00:34.50 and Hutchinson who was expelled 00:00:34.53\00:00:36.30 for having separate views. 00:00:36.33\00:00:37.67 And it was a godly commonwealth than anything but... 00:00:37.70\00:00:40.84 Yep. 00:00:40.87\00:00:43.14 So, you know, where do you think this is leading? 00:00:43.17\00:00:48.01 Well, you know, I do know this, if we look at the, 00:00:48.04\00:00:51.71 again, the historical trajectory, right? 00:00:51.75\00:00:53.88 So theologically speaking, you've got the foundation 00:00:53.92\00:00:56.99 from Puritan theology 00:00:57.02\00:00:58.75 and dominionism that kind of feed 00:00:58.79\00:01:01.06 into that mindset of America being God's chosen nation 00:01:01.09\00:01:05.19 and also more from the perspective 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.53 of almost a Christian theocracy. 00:01:07.56\00:01:10.17 But if you look back from the roughly 60s onward, 00:01:10.20\00:01:13.74 there has been a growing push 00:01:13.77\00:01:16.44 from different religious groups. 00:01:16.47\00:01:17.81 It started out as the moral majority 00:01:17.84\00:01:19.97 than the Christian coalition, 00:01:20.01\00:01:21.54 and they gained significant national positions 00:01:21.58\00:01:25.91 in elected offices in 1992. 00:01:25.95\00:01:28.35 And then by 1998, 00:01:28.38\00:01:29.75 they had declined significantly, 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.59 but they didn't organize 00:01:32.62\00:01:35.72 and maintain their organizational structure, 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.36 but they started more of a grass roots movement 00:01:38.39\00:01:41.26 that from 1998 up to the present has infiltrated 00:01:41.30\00:01:45.37 in a lot of the state electoral positions 00:01:45.40\00:01:49.00 that from there filter up into the national level. 00:01:49.04\00:01:51.67 So, yeah, that's something that they are still a movement 00:01:51.71\00:01:56.44 that is on the horizon 00:01:56.48\00:01:57.81 that has an impact here in America. 00:01:57.85\00:01:59.71 And, you know, I've been watching this, 00:01:59.75\00:02:02.05 it's during my lifetime and your lifetime. 00:02:02.08\00:02:05.52 And to me, there's an interesting 00:02:05.55\00:02:07.09 phenomenon going, 00:02:07.12\00:02:08.46 this incipient theocracy has always been a lure 00:02:08.49\00:02:13.46 in the United States. 00:02:13.50\00:02:14.83 It's pretty much where we started 00:02:14.86\00:02:16.43 and it's just gotten more and more 00:02:16.46\00:02:18.13 fixed in people's minds, 00:02:18.17\00:02:19.93 I think, but it seems to me it's increased in power 00:02:19.97\00:02:24.17 and lure as actual spirituality 00:02:24.21\00:02:29.18 is declined. 00:02:29.21\00:02:30.55 They don't go in tandem. 00:02:30.58\00:02:31.91 They are actually diverging. True. 00:02:31.95\00:02:35.08 And on one level, 00:02:35.12\00:02:36.45 you and I can't judge anyone else's heart, 00:02:36.48\00:02:38.55 we can only know our own, 00:02:38.59\00:02:39.92 but there's certain evidence as the Bible says, 00:02:39.95\00:02:41.79 by their fruit you shall know them. 00:02:41.82\00:02:43.49 And I think it's sort of abundantly obvious 00:02:43.53\00:02:46.33 that spirituality is the kind, 00:02:46.36\00:02:50.10 introspective, devotional, 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.44 prayerful, pietistic manner 00:02:53.47\00:02:55.90 that used to characterize what was known as spirituality. 00:02:55.94\00:02:59.57 That's not the thing of America nowadays. 00:02:59.61\00:03:03.48 What passes for spirituality is sort of the whoop 'em up. 00:03:03.51\00:03:06.25 And, you know, and pout at this type thing, 00:03:06.28\00:03:10.32 slay you in the aisles, 00:03:10.35\00:03:11.82 or you don't talk about the great prosperity 00:03:11.85\00:03:17.23 that's coming to you. 00:03:17.26\00:03:18.59 All of that's very extent in the United States, 00:03:18.63\00:03:20.26 but actual, godly living it's on the decline. 00:03:20.30\00:03:23.60 Yeah. 00:03:23.63\00:03:24.97 You know, what characterizes the United States 00:03:25.00\00:03:27.04 in most of the world, 00:03:27.07\00:03:28.40 but we lead the way in consumerism, 00:03:28.44\00:03:29.77 it's sort of self, you know, 00:03:29.80\00:03:31.87 self fulfillment pleasure and so on. 00:03:31.91\00:03:35.28 And the religious world is no different. 00:03:35.31\00:03:37.21 And so it's sort of curious as 00:03:37.25\00:03:38.98 what I would describe 00:03:39.01\00:03:40.35 as real spirituality has declined, 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.75 then this aspiration for spiritual control 00:03:42.78\00:03:46.05 or for religious control has increased. 00:03:46.09\00:03:48.62 And, you know, one thing that 00:03:48.66\00:03:49.99 I would add to kind of that picture, 00:03:50.03\00:03:51.69 Lincoln, is that, you know, as Christians, 00:03:51.73\00:03:56.00 we don't want to give the wrong idea or impression 00:03:56.03\00:03:59.60 that we would be against good moral norms that 00:03:59.63\00:04:04.51 some of, some parts of that 00:04:04.54\00:04:05.87 movement of the religious right. 00:04:05.91\00:04:08.74 What they propose, right? 00:04:08.78\00:04:11.58 There's things that in the movement itself, 00:04:11.61\00:04:13.65 that I was okay, most, any Christian could say, 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.62 yeah, there's good moral aspects to it. 00:04:15.65\00:04:17.69 The danger though, as you're pointing out is that 00:04:17.72\00:04:20.56 as the spirituality of the believers 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.82 in that movement go down, 00:04:22.86\00:04:24.86 they have more of in, 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.26 it's a converse growth of a desire to dominate 00:04:26.29\00:04:30.27 and control and force others to adopt those views. 00:04:30.30\00:04:33.30 So I think that the challenge 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.60 we run into is how to get moral norms 00:04:35.64\00:04:38.74 as Christians that we live by shared, 00:04:38.77\00:04:41.54 but through the power of the spirit rather than 00:04:41.58\00:04:42.94 the power of this thing. 00:04:42.98\00:04:44.31 I got the wording slightly wrong. 00:04:44.35\00:04:45.68 But doesn't Paul say 00:04:45.71\00:04:47.05 the Spirit of Christ constrains me? 00:04:47.08\00:04:48.45 Yeah. In Galatians Chapter 3. 00:04:48.48\00:04:50.62 Right. 00:04:50.65\00:04:51.99 And without the spirit, 00:04:52.02\00:04:54.42 religiosity or religious endeavors, 00:04:54.46\00:04:57.93 I think become toxic 00:04:57.96\00:04:59.29 because you're not constrained by charity, 00:04:59.33\00:05:02.73 which is one of the words the Bible 00:05:02.76\00:05:04.17 uses for godly love, you know the... 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.67 Peace and tolerance. Right. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.44 So I don't think it's an accident, 00:05:08.47\00:05:10.31 and I think it needs to be commented on, 00:05:10.34\00:05:11.94 and it's not normally, it's... 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.58 There's a normal treating of the Christian thing 00:05:14.61\00:05:17.08 is just another political movement, 00:05:17.11\00:05:19.85 but Christianity and indeed any religion 00:05:19.88\00:05:22.55 without its underlying sensitivities 00:05:22.58\00:05:25.35 is very toxic. 00:05:25.39\00:05:27.19 And I've said it on this program, 00:05:27.22\00:05:28.56 and I'll say it as often as I can, 00:05:28.59\00:05:30.29 religion without spirituality 00:05:30.33\00:05:32.19 is one of the most dangerous forces in the world. 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.56 True. 00:05:34.60\00:05:35.93 It goes toxic very easily without that not restraining, 00:05:35.96\00:05:40.04 it tends to restrain, 00:05:40.07\00:05:41.40 but that fulfilling dynamic of the inner life, 00:05:41.44\00:05:44.81 that all basic religions cater to. 00:05:44.84\00:05:48.71 There's a great need in the human heart for, 00:05:48.74\00:05:51.01 more than a need. 00:05:51.05\00:05:52.38 We can't live without it. True. 00:05:52.41\00:05:53.95 You know, without the kinder, more spiritual, 00:05:53.98\00:05:57.99 the more existential aspect of existence you end up 00:05:58.02\00:06:01.62 as Ceausescu's Romania 00:06:01.66\00:06:04.59 where babies don't even grow beyond infantile state. 00:06:04.63\00:06:08.33 It destroys the human soul. 00:06:08.36\00:06:11.20 True. Very true. 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.57 And, you know, I think that coming back 00:06:12.60\00:06:14.17 more to point on your question, you know, 00:06:14.20\00:06:16.20 where does one see this going? 00:06:16.24\00:06:18.34 I know currently there is a commission actually, 00:06:18.37\00:06:21.51 it's in both the Senate 00:06:21.54\00:06:23.55 and the house where they're putting together 00:06:23.58\00:06:25.75 a commission to investigate 00:06:25.78\00:06:28.15 further the storming of the Capitol on January 6th 00:06:28.18\00:06:32.35 and taking time to find out, 00:06:32.39\00:06:34.69 not only investigate it, 00:06:34.72\00:06:36.06 draw their conclusions, 00:06:36.09\00:06:37.43 but also from the legal end is individuals 00:06:37.46\00:06:40.23 that were implicated and involved in it. 00:06:40.26\00:06:42.46 You know, they're going to face some kind of criminal charges. 00:06:42.50\00:06:45.00 So looking in the bigger perspective 00:06:45.03\00:06:48.47 several news outlets main stream 00:06:48.50\00:06:51.17 news media were recognizing 00:06:51.21\00:06:52.97 that type of movement on a parallel 00:06:53.01\00:06:55.48 to what you mentioned earlier 00:06:55.51\00:06:56.91 in this program about the Taliban. 00:06:56.95\00:06:59.35 You've got little groups 00:06:59.38\00:07:00.72 that become cells within America 00:07:00.75\00:07:03.45 that are devout and dedicated 00:07:03.49\00:07:05.65 to what they believe is the vision for this country. 00:07:05.69\00:07:08.42 And that is something 00:07:08.46\00:07:09.79 that will pose a definite challenge 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.19 to national security. 00:07:11.23\00:07:12.59 And, you know, revolutionary groups 00:07:12.63\00:07:14.13 have risen in the modern world quite often, 00:07:14.16\00:07:17.40 most of them not religious, 00:07:17.43\00:07:18.83 but they follow the same dynamic 00:07:18.87\00:07:20.27 where they're a religion or a social activist group. 00:07:20.30\00:07:23.81 As they get in those cells, 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.71 as they become more and more thwarted, 00:07:25.74\00:07:28.31 as they become more and more convinced 00:07:28.34\00:07:30.41 of the rightness of what they're doing, 00:07:30.45\00:07:31.98 they become crueler and crueler 00:07:32.01\00:07:35.05 and less and less worried 00:07:35.08\00:07:36.75 about the human cost of what they're doing. 00:07:36.79\00:07:39.69 Again, the Taliban, you know, with... 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.32 My daughter was watching a program the other day where, 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.99 you know, reenacting of the Taliban 00:07:45.03\00:07:46.76 were actually shot a little girl 00:07:46.80\00:07:48.26 because she could spell. 00:07:48.30\00:07:51.53 But you would think that in religion, 00:07:51.57\00:07:53.30 they're concerned about 00:07:53.34\00:07:54.67 the spiritual wellbeing of little girls 00:07:54.70\00:07:57.24 that it can become so diverted. 00:07:57.27\00:07:59.57 And I think even in the United States, 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.48 that might come, 00:08:01.51\00:08:03.14 but we need to make sure that that doesn't, right? 00:08:03.18\00:08:05.21 Yeah. 00:08:05.25\00:08:06.58 And discussing it, 00:08:06.61\00:08:07.95 I think clarifies it for many people, 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.55 hopefully a person with spiritual inclinations 00:08:09.58\00:08:12.39 wouldn't allow themselves to be hijacked 00:08:12.42\00:08:14.72 to a political power movement. 00:08:14.76\00:08:16.96 Hopefully people wouldn't think that it's all fulfilled 00:08:16.99\00:08:20.46 when they read their Old Testament, 00:08:20.50\00:08:21.83 particularly it's all fulfilled in this modern nation 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.80 of the United States. 00:08:24.83\00:08:26.47 It's God's kingdom, none of this world, right? 00:08:26.50\00:08:28.34 Amen. Yep. 00:08:28.37\00:08:29.70 But we need to encourage people. 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.44 Moving ahead, it's gonna be rocky going, 00:08:31.47\00:08:33.94 but we somehow need to steer clear 00:08:33.98\00:08:36.11 of these excesses, 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.48 keep spiritual fervor alive and allow religion to function, 00:08:37.51\00:08:41.15 but not pervert it into a political action group. 00:08:41.18\00:08:44.02 True. Very, very true. Yeah. 00:08:44.05\00:08:46.02 You know, I think that one of the key things that 00:08:46.05\00:08:48.89 we can take away from this is that 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.49 when we look at the New Testament especially, 00:08:50.53\00:08:53.26 we find in the Book of Romans Chapter 13, 00:08:53.29\00:08:57.20 where Paul goes in and talks about 00:08:57.23\00:08:59.03 the role of the Christian in relationship to the state 00:08:59.07\00:09:03.00 or whatever the authorities are that God has ordained 00:09:03.04\00:09:06.07 to govern in different countries 00:09:06.11\00:09:07.94 around the world. 00:09:07.98\00:09:09.31 And what we learn there, what Paul talks about is that 00:09:09.34\00:09:11.91 we should give respect to those authorities 00:09:11.95\00:09:14.42 as long as those authorities do not ask us to do 00:09:14.45\00:09:17.32 something against God's law or against our conscience. 00:09:17.35\00:09:20.96 So in that regard, 00:09:20.99\00:09:22.32 we should do our utmost to uphold 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.33 and respect the government that we're living under, 00:09:24.36\00:09:27.43 living as Christians propagating our faith, 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.76 living our faith. 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.13 And, of course, drawing a line 00:09:31.17\00:09:32.50 if our government asks us to go beyond what God's law, 00:09:32.53\00:09:35.50 moral law would expect of us. 00:09:35.54\00:09:37.41
