Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 with my guest Clifford Goldstein, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.43 we'd been ranging over the whole world 00:00:04.47\00:00:06.60 and maybe going on a few different tangents, 00:00:06.63\00:00:09.84 but all from a point of religious liberty. 00:00:09.87\00:00:14.54 Ellen White, the Seventh-day Adventist visionary 00:00:14.58\00:00:18.91 enlarging on some of the prophetic understandings 00:00:18.95\00:00:22.32 of Adventists about the role 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.75 that the United States would play in prophecy 00:00:24.79\00:00:26.79 and picking up from Revelation 00:00:26.82\00:00:29.39 where it speaks of coercing people 00:00:29.42\00:00:33.19 to worship a certain way 00:00:33.23\00:00:34.56 under ultimately punishment of death. 00:00:34.60\00:00:37.10 Ellen White used the term 00:00:37.13\00:00:39.17 that this would go out throughout Christendom. 00:00:39.20\00:00:42.30 In some places, and in some you get 00:00:42.34\00:00:44.37 the impression it's talking about the world. 00:00:44.41\00:00:47.08 Yes, but mostly I've gone and counted up, 00:00:47.11\00:00:49.34 mostly Christendom. 00:00:49.38\00:00:50.71 But I don't so much want to discuss 00:00:50.75\00:00:52.68 whether how much of it, 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.05 but that's an interesting term. 00:00:54.08\00:00:56.79 You don't hear that any to remember. 00:00:56.82\00:00:58.45 No, no. 00:00:58.49\00:00:59.82 In fact, you mostly get it in history books 00:00:59.85\00:01:02.26 talk about the crusades. 00:01:02.29\00:01:04.39 But she wrote it probably 100 years ago. 00:01:04.43\00:01:05.93 Yes. 00:01:05.96\00:01:07.30 But even then, I don't think it was that common. 00:01:07.33\00:01:09.26 Yeah. 00:01:09.30\00:01:10.87 But, you know, what's Christendom? 00:01:10.90\00:01:14.00 I don't know it's a hard question 00:01:14.04\00:01:15.37 when you got Christianity everywhere to some degree. 00:01:15.40\00:01:18.01 That's true. 00:01:18.04\00:01:19.37 Maybe the cultures 00:01:19.41\00:01:20.74 where it's most in a Western America, 00:01:20.78\00:01:23.35 Western Europe, parts of Latin America, 00:01:23.38\00:01:25.88 Australia. 00:01:25.91\00:01:27.25 But I have, I hear people that 00:01:27.28\00:01:28.92 I think should know better, but it's their view. 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.49 They maintain resolutely 00:01:31.52\00:01:33.66 that Europe is not Christian anymore. 00:01:33.69\00:01:35.09 Yeah, well, in a certain sense, but they're still the vestiges. 00:01:35.12\00:01:39.76 I used to work in Switzerland illegally. 00:01:39.79\00:01:42.53 I was an illegal. 00:01:42.56\00:01:44.00 Statute of limitations I hope. 00:01:44.03\00:01:45.37 Yeah, I used to work over there illegally. 00:01:45.40\00:01:47.70 And the people that I work with 00:01:47.74\00:01:50.81 would never let me go with them. 00:01:50.84\00:01:52.37 They used to work on Sundays. 00:01:52.41\00:01:55.14 And they had strict Sunday closing laws 00:01:55.18\00:01:59.41 in a very secular society, so even Holland. 00:01:59.45\00:02:03.85 You're confirming what I'm about to say. 00:02:03.89\00:02:05.49 Oh, my goodness, Holland, oh, and they're so liberal. 00:02:05.52\00:02:08.52 Oh, my goodness, that anything goes. 00:02:08.56\00:02:12.26 But they have 00:02:12.29\00:02:13.63 a lot of closing laws in Holland, 00:02:13.66\00:02:16.13 and these are vestiges, vestiges of the Christian past. 00:02:16.16\00:02:22.37 I think they're more than vestiges. 00:02:22.40\00:02:24.67 The people may not be practicing their faith, 00:02:24.71\00:02:28.24 but I put it to you, 00:02:28.28\00:02:29.61 see if you differ 00:02:29.64\00:02:30.98 because you've traveled around on years ago, 00:02:31.01\00:02:34.32 but still in experiential level 00:02:34.35\00:02:35.88 where I literally had to been a tourist 00:02:35.92\00:02:37.95 when I went through Europe, 00:02:37.99\00:02:39.32 you know, just flitting through. 00:02:39.35\00:02:41.72 But I believe most, 00:02:41.76\00:02:43.36 every people group in Europe know exactly 00:02:43.39\00:02:45.89 what their religious affiliation is. 00:02:45.93\00:02:47.76 Not their membership, 00:02:47.80\00:02:49.13 but what they are like in Northern Ireland, 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.50 Roman Catholic 00:02:52.53\00:02:53.87 other than the Protestant immigrates that... 00:02:53.90\00:02:56.74 If you go to Scandinavia, they're all Lutherans. 00:02:56.77\00:02:59.64 They're all in, I mean, Sweden. 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.01 It was funny, I lived in Sweden when I was about 20 years old, 00:03:02.04\00:03:06.65 long before I was, became a believer. 00:03:06.68\00:03:10.25 And I'll never forget one day. 00:03:10.29\00:03:13.46 I'm just walking somewhere. 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.52 And I said to myself, 00:03:15.56\00:03:17.43 "Man, this is the most godless place 00:03:17.46\00:03:21.86 I had ever been." 00:03:21.90\00:03:23.23 Where was this again? 00:03:23.26\00:03:24.60 Sweden, and I was like, 00:03:24.63\00:03:26.40 the Swedish were just 00:03:26.43\00:03:30.57 and yet it's Lutheran from top to bottom, 00:03:30.61\00:03:34.11 beginning to end and Christmas Yule time. 00:03:34.14\00:03:38.85 Man, everything shuts down and there's Christian. 00:03:38.88\00:03:43.99 And yet, these people 00:03:44.02\00:03:46.62 really were just about as secular, 00:03:46.65\00:03:50.36 I'll use the kinder term secular 00:03:50.39\00:03:52.93 as you're gonna meet. 00:03:52.96\00:03:54.50 But their identification? 00:03:54.53\00:03:56.56 Now they'll say they are Lutherans. 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.33 Those who have been never to church in their life. 00:03:58.37\00:04:00.44 Christendom 00:04:00.47\00:04:01.84 is not a perfect 00:04:01.87\00:04:07.61 but somewhat of an analogue to the Islamic world 00:04:07.64\00:04:11.01 where people are born into something, 00:04:11.05\00:04:14.12 they may not practice it. 00:04:14.15\00:04:15.48 Islam is a little more rigorous. 00:04:15.52\00:04:17.12 The culture is shaped by religion, 00:04:17.15\00:04:19.12 but they're not all observant. 00:04:19.15\00:04:20.49 But you are Muslim in many countries, 00:04:20.52\00:04:23.66 just by virtue of being born there. 00:04:23.69\00:04:25.29 You're coming from a Jewish perspective, 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.63 before you know more. 00:04:27.66\00:04:29.00 If you're not Jewish, and you're not a Muslim, 00:04:29.03\00:04:31.87 and you're not a Buddhist, then you're a Christian period, 00:04:31.90\00:04:35.07 whether you ever go to church, that's how we always viewed it. 00:04:35.10\00:04:38.31 And I think the US Census which is just over, 00:04:38.34\00:04:41.08 a lot of that follows there. 00:04:41.11\00:04:42.74 There are many people that put themselves down 00:04:42.78\00:04:44.71 as one belief or another. 00:04:44.75\00:04:47.82 They have no affiliation, 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.18 but that's what they come to with, 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.55 sort of they something inherited. 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.32 And the type of legislation that's imagined, 00:04:52.35\00:04:58.13 but maybe that's the wrong word 00:04:58.16\00:04:59.49 because it says imaginary. 00:04:59.53\00:05:00.86 Yeah. You know, that's foreseen. 00:05:00.90\00:05:02.86 Yeah. 00:05:02.90\00:05:04.23 I think could carry very easily 00:05:04.27\00:05:06.90 on this residual identification, 00:05:06.94\00:05:10.64 it doesn't require a population 00:05:10.67\00:05:13.07 that that's jumping up and down 00:05:13.11\00:05:15.18 and yelling jihad or crusade or whatever. 00:05:15.21\00:05:18.38 And you mix that together with the COVID thing, 00:05:18.41\00:05:23.69 and just how... 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.05 A little panic, things sharpened greatly. 00:05:25.09\00:05:29.22 I mean, imagine if it was, 00:05:29.26\00:05:30.59 I think we said in another program, 00:05:30.63\00:05:32.83 imagine if this had a 5 or 10 or 20% death rate 00:05:32.86\00:05:38.13 with COVID, 00:05:38.17\00:05:39.50 can you imagine what would be and... 00:05:39.53\00:05:42.97 Well, you don't have to imagine how, 00:05:43.00\00:05:44.34 I think I mentioned it earlier in another program. 00:05:44.37\00:05:47.74 But right now, 00:05:47.78\00:05:49.34 it doesn't seem to spread but in the Middle East, 00:05:49.38\00:05:51.31 they have MERS another COVID, 00:05:51.35\00:05:57.09 another Coronavirus. 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.69 It's called camel flu, 40% mortality rate. 00:05:59.72\00:06:03.76 So we could be in the middle of something like that 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.29 if it gets on a plane and comes here. 00:06:06.33\00:06:08.26 Well, that they have a 40, 00:06:08.30\00:06:09.63 they got a disease that's got a 40% mortal, 00:06:09.66\00:06:12.37 a flu like disease? 00:06:12.40\00:06:14.07 It's not flu like, 00:06:14.10\00:06:15.44 it's the same family as the Corona. 00:06:15.47\00:06:18.34 It's another Coronavirus. 00:06:18.37\00:06:19.71 Well, what makes you think that won't spread? 00:06:19.74\00:06:21.98 I don't think it won't spread. 00:06:22.01\00:06:23.68 I hope not. But I'm just saying right now. 00:06:23.71\00:06:26.35 It only appeared in the last, about last year. 00:06:26.38\00:06:28.15 Simplization as we know it would end if we had a 40%. 00:06:28.18\00:06:34.19 That's what it has. You know, yeah. 00:06:34.22\00:06:36.22 I know you've heard of it. How come I never heard of this? 00:06:36.26\00:06:39.06 Some more of your conspiracy stuff? 00:06:39.09\00:06:41.26 No, no, go read on it. 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.33 It's a phenomenon right now. Yeah. 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.40 Camel flu? MERS it's called. 00:06:45.43\00:06:47.74 I've heard of MERS before. 00:06:47.77\00:06:49.30 I know people have had MERS. Okay. 00:06:49.34\00:06:53.11 Forty percent. 00:06:53.14\00:06:54.68 But we hope and pray 00:06:54.71\00:06:56.44 that such a thing doesn't happen. 00:06:56.48\00:06:57.81 Although Revelation speaks of a cycle of plagues 00:06:57.85\00:07:01.28 that have that sort of death rate. 00:07:01.32\00:07:03.02 And in past history, remember, Europe endured several phases, 00:07:03.05\00:07:08.09 and in one phase, about a third of Europe died. 00:07:08.12\00:07:12.03 That was then and this is now and... 00:07:12.06\00:07:15.03 Why is it different now? 00:07:15.06\00:07:16.40 Well, I think we've got, 00:07:16.43\00:07:17.77 I think we're a little more medically advanced 00:07:17.80\00:07:19.20 than they were in the 13th century. 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.87 It's nearly a year since this began, 00:07:20.90\00:07:22.94 and there hasn't been any antidote yet. 00:07:22.97\00:07:25.74 And this isn't much worse than the flu. 00:07:25.77\00:07:27.74 Yeah. 00:07:27.78\00:07:29.11 Flu kills up to 60,000 people a year in the US. 00:07:29.14\00:07:32.61 Yeah, I know. I know. 00:07:32.65\00:07:34.42 So it's an interesting world. 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.09 But the takeaway, 00:07:37.12\00:07:38.65 I think on this is that 00:07:38.69\00:07:40.16 some of the same dynamics 00:07:40.19\00:07:41.52 that existed in the past is still there. 00:07:41.56\00:07:43.93 The threats as always sort of sharpen 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.83 these rivalries or these intolerances. 00:07:46.86\00:07:50.80 And religious liberty is an issue. 00:07:50.83\00:07:53.40 It's heightened under the COVID thing. 00:07:53.44\00:07:56.07 And we need to be vigilant. 00:07:56.10\00:07:57.44 There's a phrase from the book of Solomon, 00:07:57.47\00:07:59.31 Ecclesiastes Ein kol chadash tachat hashemesh 00:07:59.34\00:08:05.71 which is basically, 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.68 "There's nothing new under the sun, 00:08:07.72\00:08:11.45 and let there be enough trouble." 00:08:11.49\00:08:16.19 What is history shown us over and over and over again? 00:08:16.22\00:08:21.30 People want stability, people want safety, 00:08:21.33\00:08:26.97 and they will give up a lot to get it. 00:08:27.00\00:08:30.11 And again, I don't know 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.67 what this COVID thing is gonna do. 00:08:31.71\00:08:34.34 They could, you know, six months from now, 00:08:34.38\00:08:37.05 it could be all better, 00:08:37.08\00:08:38.51 and we all got our shots or whatever. 00:08:38.55\00:08:40.48 And we all go on our merry way. 00:08:40.52\00:08:43.22 But I'm not so sure 00:08:43.25\00:08:46.32 anything is ever gonna be the same again. 00:08:46.35\00:08:49.96 And I think it's opened the door. 00:08:49.99\00:08:55.03 It's opened the door to something 00:08:55.06\00:08:56.80 and we step through a door 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.33 that I'm not so sure we're gonna step back through, 00:08:59.37\00:09:04.24 walk through that door close, 00:09:04.27\00:09:06.24 you know, turn around, walk back, close the door, 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.81 and things go on the way they used to. 00:09:08.84\00:09:11.15 So, again, I don't know I've learned a long time ago, 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.38 someone once said, 00:09:14.42\00:09:15.75 it's very difficult to make an accurate prediction, 00:09:15.78\00:09:20.36 especially about the future. 00:09:20.39\00:09:23.12 And I wouldn't want to guess on it. 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.26 All I know is if you don't know God, 00:09:25.29\00:09:28.80 this is a better time than ever 00:09:28.83\00:09:31.23 to know the Lord and to know His love 00:09:31.27\00:09:33.37 because you're going to need to hold on to something. 00:09:33.40\00:09:35.80 If you never stirred to differ from something 00:09:39.54\00:09:43.31 that said on this program or read in Liberty magazine, 00:09:43.35\00:09:46.68 then I apologize, 00:09:46.72\00:09:48.35 because we should be somewhat troublers in Israel 00:09:48.38\00:09:52.05 to get people to re-examine aspects 00:09:52.09\00:09:54.32 of this very important issue of religious liberty. 00:09:54.36\00:09:58.33 But it does trouble me in the era 00:09:58.36\00:10:01.06 that the United States has just come through 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.03 that so many people repeat narrow sectarian viewpoints 00:10:03.06\00:10:08.44 that they heard from someone else 00:10:08.47\00:10:10.07 and haven't thought through, 00:10:10.11\00:10:11.54 and then find a difference 00:10:11.57\00:10:13.14 with what we put in our magazine. 00:10:13.17\00:10:15.14 I don't like that, I'm thinking the leader sort of an approach. 00:10:15.18\00:10:20.72 We should be thinkers, 00:10:20.75\00:10:23.49 not reflectors of other men's opinions. 00:10:23.52\00:10:26.62 And we should also exemplify 00:10:26.65\00:10:28.16 what Jesus said to the woman taken in sin, 00:10:28.19\00:10:30.73 substitute editor taken to correct. 00:10:30.76\00:10:34.43 He says, "Who's condemning you?" 00:10:34.46\00:10:36.03 He says, "No, I don't condemn you. 00:10:36.06\00:10:37.97 Go and sin no more." 00:10:38.00\00:10:39.97 Liberty will dedicate itself 00:10:40.00\00:10:41.77 to presenting the truth on religious freedom. 00:10:41.80\00:10:46.64 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:10:46.68\00:10:49.74
