Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the break with guest Clifford Goldstein. 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.94 I nearly said... Remember my name. 00:00:06.97\00:00:08.30 You forgot my name already. 00:00:08.34\00:00:09.67 I nearly said palmist instead of psalmist, 00:00:09.70\00:00:11.71 I got little off. 00:00:11.74\00:00:14.11 Words slip out. 00:00:14.14\00:00:15.64 You're getting old, Lincoln. Yes. 00:00:15.68\00:00:18.01 I'm not 65, but I've got a couple of years on you. 00:00:18.05\00:00:22.28 I've got more hair too. 00:00:22.32\00:00:24.79 Gotta get that dig in. Go ahead. 00:00:24.82\00:00:26.29 Come on. Go ahead. 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.66 Cut on that. 00:00:28.69\00:00:30.89 Anyhow, Clifford Goldstein, 00:00:30.93\00:00:33.23 you may be known to some of our viewers 00:00:33.26\00:00:34.93 from other programs. 00:00:34.96\00:00:36.30 You've been on this way back 00:00:36.33\00:00:38.83 and edited Liberty magazine for years. 00:00:38.87\00:00:41.37 So let's really get into the philosophy 00:00:41.40\00:00:42.74 of this again. 00:00:42.77\00:00:44.11 I know you and I love talking about this. 00:00:44.14\00:00:45.87 And religious liberty is a real world issue, 00:00:45.91\00:00:49.88 but behind it lies 00:00:49.91\00:00:51.25 some philosophical/ theological equations. 00:00:51.28\00:00:55.42 Well, I think right off the bat, 00:00:55.45\00:00:58.09 one of the foundational things in religious liberty 00:00:58.12\00:01:01.62 is your belief in God. 00:01:01.66\00:01:02.99 Okay? 00:01:03.02\00:01:04.36 And to believe in God, 00:01:04.39\00:01:05.73 there's a whole host of philosophical assumptions. 00:01:05.76\00:01:09.03 Now, but remember, religion has suffered. 00:01:09.06\00:01:10.87 That's fine, we accept that as Christians. 00:01:10.90\00:01:13.30 But if someone has used their deductive logical powers 00:01:13.34\00:01:17.61 and they've chosen another God or another... 00:01:17.64\00:01:20.14 Well, I bet. Well, another God is... 00:01:20.18\00:01:21.61 Then you led logically. 00:01:21.64\00:01:22.98 And I heard 00:01:23.01\00:01:24.35 a Roman Catholic Cardinal say this. 00:01:24.38\00:01:25.71 What? 00:01:25.75\00:01:27.08 He spoke for his own church and he says, 00:01:27.12\00:01:28.45 "We Catholics once believed that error has no rights." 00:01:28.48\00:01:33.42 They came at this from this philosopher, 00:01:33.46\00:01:35.29 philosophical thing. 00:01:35.32\00:01:36.66 That someone that's not intelligent enough 00:01:36.69\00:01:38.53 deductively to recognize God 00:01:38.56\00:01:41.46 they're in utter darkness 00:01:41.50\00:01:42.83 because they're corrupt and faulty in their thinking. 00:01:42.86\00:01:45.87 And they don't warrant respect. 00:01:45.90\00:01:49.70 And remember with Liberty magazine, 00:01:49.74\00:01:51.17 you pursued this, 00:01:51.21\00:01:52.94 well, you and I know, and we have our faith 00:01:52.97\00:01:54.81 and we believe it. 00:01:54.84\00:01:56.18 We have to grant the right from, 00:01:56.21\00:01:57.91 to someone to choose wrongly, 00:01:57.95\00:02:00.68 to dedicate their life 00:02:00.72\00:02:02.05 to a totally futile philosophical 00:02:02.08\00:02:05.45 or religious endeavor. 00:02:05.49\00:02:06.92 Because they would think the same with us. 00:02:06.96\00:02:08.69 They would think the same with us. 00:02:08.72\00:02:10.06 And that's, I think the beauty... 00:02:10.09\00:02:11.69 It's not quite the same thing as evangelizing 00:02:11.73\00:02:14.50 on behalf of Christ and the Christian faith. 00:02:14.53\00:02:17.13 And I, again too, I think you come back 00:02:17.17\00:02:19.13 to the reality of the gospel, 00:02:19.17\00:02:23.74 where God allowed his from the beginning, 00:02:23.77\00:02:27.58 He allowed Adam and Eve the freedom to disobey. 00:02:27.61\00:02:32.11 Now they face a penalty for it. 00:02:32.15\00:02:34.48 And then yet the amazing thing is they received it 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.99 right after they sinned, 00:02:37.02\00:02:38.35 you know, and they're gonna face this 00:02:38.39\00:02:39.72 immediate penalty, 00:02:39.75\00:02:41.26 but He gave them the promise that, 00:02:41.29\00:02:42.76 you know, when they call the proto-evangelium, 00:02:42.79\00:02:45.79 which is the first gospel promise 00:02:45.83\00:02:48.56 that he's going to solve the problem. 00:02:48.60\00:02:51.23 So... 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.84 We can never understand it totally, 00:02:53.87\00:02:55.74 but you know, these little, these innocent beings, 00:02:55.77\00:02:59.01 and of course there's a lot unsaid 00:02:59.04\00:03:01.74 even in Bible and so. 00:03:01.78\00:03:03.45 It may have been many, many years 00:03:03.48\00:03:04.95 that they were tutored by angels, 00:03:04.98\00:03:08.22 heavenly intelligences, 00:03:08.25\00:03:09.58 we don't know how naive they were at that point 00:03:09.62\00:03:12.49 when the serpent whispers to Eve, 00:03:12.52\00:03:16.12 you know, we tend to think of them 00:03:16.16\00:03:17.49 as sort of like, you know, 00:03:17.53\00:03:19.89 grade school kids or worse total naives. 00:03:19.93\00:03:23.16 Well, yeah, I don't, I don't know. 00:03:23.20\00:03:25.97 I don't think... 00:03:26.00\00:03:27.34 If they failed like the first week after creation, 00:03:27.37\00:03:30.11 that would be a little more problematic. 00:03:30.14\00:03:31.51 But on my understanding they were warned not to eat 00:03:31.54\00:03:35.38 of the tree 00:03:35.41\00:03:36.91 and they went and it was blatant disobedience 00:03:36.95\00:03:41.28 in the face of a clear warning. 00:03:41.32\00:03:42.65 Huh? What did Paul say? 00:03:42.68\00:03:45.75 Well, he blamed that on Eve first. 00:03:45.79\00:03:47.56 He said she was deceived that Adam was not. 00:03:47.59\00:03:50.89 Yeah. And so Adam, well, I think... 00:03:50.93\00:03:52.26 But isn't that blatant? 00:03:52.29\00:03:53.63 If there was blatant, 00:03:53.66\00:03:55.00 that was with Adam not with Eve. 00:03:55.03\00:03:56.36 Yeah. 00:03:56.40\00:03:57.73 And you know, that's why we often, 00:03:57.77\00:03:59.10 scripture often talks about you go to Romans 5. 00:03:59.13\00:04:02.10 It doesn't say Adam and Eve fell or Eve fell. 00:04:02.14\00:04:04.94 It was Adam fell. 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.44 Christ came to fix, Adam fell, Christ fixed it. 00:04:06.47\00:04:09.38 Adam fell, Christ fixed it. 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.31 It's all the time Adam. 00:04:11.35\00:04:13.55 Now you could argue that's the biblical patriarchy 00:04:13.58\00:04:16.12 or whatever you want. 00:04:16.15\00:04:17.52 But in the end, you know... 00:04:17.55\00:04:18.89 Well, for human conduct it makes no difference. 00:04:18.92\00:04:20.69 They're all male or female, 00:04:20.72\00:04:22.16 we're all descendants of the first couple. 00:04:22.19\00:04:25.63 But what is... 00:04:25.66\00:04:27.00 What would you say is the philosophic? 00:04:27.03\00:04:28.43 All right. 00:04:28.46\00:04:29.80 I've been out of Liberty now for 20 something years. 00:04:29.83\00:04:31.63 Okay. 00:04:31.67\00:04:33.00 I just kind of forgot a lot, 00:04:33.03\00:04:34.84 but what would you say is the foundational fundamental, 00:04:34.87\00:04:39.67 philosophical pillar 00:04:39.71\00:04:43.24 of religious liberty, 00:04:43.28\00:04:44.68 if you could put it in a quick way? 00:04:44.71\00:04:47.65 Well, I alluded to it and it's not often said, 00:04:47.68\00:04:50.35 and many of our supporters, 00:04:50.39\00:04:53.02 I don't think are willing to go that far, 00:04:53.05\00:04:55.36 but we have to be set to defend the right of human beings 00:04:55.39\00:05:00.60 to follow their conscience 00:05:00.63\00:05:03.63 in whatever they choose 00:05:03.67\00:05:05.13 in religious matters or against religion. 00:05:05.17\00:05:06.77 But why, why? 00:05:06.80\00:05:08.14 We accept that 00:05:08.17\00:05:09.64 and will defend their right to do so, to our death. 00:05:09.67\00:05:13.41 Why would you do that? 00:05:13.44\00:05:14.78 What is your philosophical, you're willing to die 00:05:14.81\00:05:18.35 to let somebody believe something that's, 00:05:18.38\00:05:21.25 you know, I mean... 00:05:21.28\00:05:22.62 At root, that has to go back to what you were talking about. 00:05:22.65\00:05:24.72 You would only have such a respect 00:05:24.75\00:05:28.16 for a fellow human being to be wrong. 00:05:28.19\00:05:30.33 If you with an acceptance of what God has done 00:05:30.36\00:05:33.83 on our behalf. 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.20 And can place that value on us as human beings. 00:05:35.23\00:05:37.40 Yes. 00:05:37.43\00:05:38.77 I don't think a Buddhist could as easily come 00:05:38.80\00:05:41.50 to that statement. 00:05:41.54\00:05:42.87 No. 00:05:42.90\00:05:44.24 I mean, they might be a better human being. 00:05:44.27\00:05:45.61 I'm not criticizing Buddhist per se, 00:05:45.64\00:05:47.08 but the philosophical background 00:05:47.11\00:05:49.11 wouldn't lead you to that. 00:05:49.14\00:05:50.88 But as Seventh-day Adventist Christians, 00:05:50.91\00:05:54.25 and I'm quite have to be convinced 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.69 that the Bible is God's way of communicating to man. 00:05:56.72\00:06:00.06 And that in these later times, 00:06:00.09\00:06:01.79 there's an imminent expectation of Christ return. 00:06:01.82\00:06:04.83 I'm happy enough with that. 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.59 But I can't force it on other people. 00:06:06.63\00:06:08.40 But I can defend religious liberty 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.43 because without the ability of people 00:06:10.47\00:06:12.37 to make up their choice, 00:06:12.40\00:06:14.57 then they're not going to choose this, 00:06:14.60\00:06:15.97 but they may choose something else. 00:06:16.00\00:06:17.51 I have to be neutral, 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.11 just like the separation of church 00:06:19.14\00:06:20.48 and state we have to... 00:06:20.51\00:06:21.84 But where do you draw the line? 00:06:21.88\00:06:23.21 Keep the coercion out of the game. 00:06:23.24\00:06:24.58 I remember when I edited Liberty... 00:06:24.61\00:06:26.68 We used to help the Scientologists. 00:06:30.42\00:06:33.69 Okay. 00:06:33.72\00:06:35.06 And that used to bug me no end to try to help them. 00:06:35.09\00:06:40.73 Okay. 00:06:40.76\00:06:42.10 Because, we had the head of the Scientology, 00:06:42.13\00:06:44.07 you know what they did when we were in Germany. 00:06:44.10\00:06:45.43 We have the head of the science. 00:06:45.47\00:06:46.80 Oh, the other group. 00:06:46.84\00:06:48.37 I'll never forget this time, 00:06:48.40\00:06:50.14 we had in the office in the protocol lounge, 00:06:50.17\00:06:53.94 the children of God. 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.48 Do you remember them? No. 00:06:55.51\00:06:56.85 The children of God were founded on the beaches 00:06:56.88\00:06:59.08 of Southern California in the 1960s. 00:06:59.11\00:07:02.72 Yeah, it was a Jesus movement. One of them. 00:07:02.75\00:07:04.85 I remember I was at a religious liberty meeting 00:07:04.89\00:07:06.96 with some of them in Rio de Janeiro once. 00:07:06.99\00:07:09.72 And I said, "One thing about your children of God, folks. 00:07:09.76\00:07:13.06 You're the only people I know 00:07:13.09\00:07:14.43 who can make the Moonies look mainstream." 00:07:14.46\00:07:16.60 Okay. But anyway, these people... 00:07:16.63\00:07:20.04 Well, we can laugh about it, 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.40 but I'm sure we defend 00:07:21.44\00:07:24.21 their right to believe that because they... 00:07:24.24\00:07:26.14 Yeah, we have to believe, see belief. 00:07:26.17\00:07:28.98 But how far, look, how far did our religious liberty go 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.41 in this country 00:07:32.45\00:07:33.78 with our Latter-day Saint brothers and sisters 00:07:33.82\00:07:36.62 with their polygamy. 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.15 We drove them out. We made it illegal parable. 00:07:38.19\00:07:41.22 What about religious freedom league? 00:07:41.26\00:07:43.22 What about the right to believe and to practice? 00:07:43.26\00:07:46.19 There are... 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.56 You're not talking about Liberty magazine 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.06 or Seventh-day Adventist, we didn't persecute them. 00:07:49.10\00:07:51.30 No, no, no. But I'm saying the country did. 00:07:51.33\00:07:52.83 Do you think they were, 00:07:52.87\00:07:54.20 you think we should have let the Mormons do polygamy? 00:07:54.24\00:07:55.57 You're getting into a bigger question. 00:07:55.60\00:07:56.94 The US is not without some mistakes 00:07:56.97\00:08:00.01 in dealing with religious thing. 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.38 Well, you think it was a mistake 00:08:01.41\00:08:02.74 to let the Mormon, to not, 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.18 to stop the Mormons from polygamy. 00:08:05.21\00:08:07.68 You think it was a mistake, now maybe... 00:08:07.72\00:08:09.12 I think it's within the right of a civil society 00:08:09.15\00:08:12.45 where the majority for good, 00:08:12.49\00:08:14.56 for reasons of the good of the majority 00:08:14.59\00:08:16.46 have acted on something. 00:08:16.49\00:08:18.79 But as a matter of conscience, 00:08:18.83\00:08:20.16 I would defend the right of Mormons 00:08:20.20\00:08:24.63 to practice that, 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.00 but accept the punishment. 00:08:26.03\00:08:27.57 Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, come on, come on. 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.44 You got the freedom. 00:08:30.47\00:08:31.81 You know, you remind me of a joke. 00:08:31.84\00:08:33.17 This Russian immigrant came over from Russia 00:08:33.21\00:08:35.91 and he says, "We have freedom of speech in Russia, 00:08:35.94\00:08:39.58 the difference is in America, 00:08:39.61\00:08:40.95 you have freedom after you speak." 00:08:40.98\00:08:42.52 No, I'm not excusing the restriction, 00:08:42.55\00:08:44.62 but I'm saying, 00:08:44.65\00:08:45.99 and this is a fallacy that's come over many people 00:08:46.02\00:08:48.86 in our day and age 00:08:48.89\00:08:50.23 because we're not used to being restricted. 00:08:50.26\00:08:51.79 Yeah. There's always a cost. 00:08:51.83\00:08:53.90 Usually a social cost. 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.60 Someone might laugh at you if you're a Mooney. 00:08:56.63\00:09:01.34 You know, that may happen, 00:09:01.37\00:09:03.04 but sometimes there's an actual restriction. 00:09:03.07\00:09:05.97 You might not be able to run 00:09:06.01\00:09:07.74 a cake making business for gays. 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.58 I'm actually stating it 00:09:10.61\00:09:12.51 because I don't think there's a contradiction there 00:09:12.55\00:09:13.88 if you do it correctly. 00:09:13.92\00:09:15.25 Sure. 00:09:15.28\00:09:16.62 But, you know, there's certain real world things 00:09:16.65\00:09:18.45 to have a certain religious attitude, 00:09:18.49\00:09:21.06 it's going to cost you something. 00:09:21.09\00:09:23.39 You can't have religion without a cost. 00:09:23.43\00:09:26.03 At the beginning in Christianity it cost you. 00:09:26.06\00:09:29.16 It has to cost you, your old way of thinking. 00:09:29.20\00:09:31.63 But I thought we were all for... 00:09:31.67\00:09:33.00 You're gonna die to defend somebody's freedom. 00:09:33.03\00:09:34.47 We are not libertarians. 00:09:34.50\00:09:35.84 You're gonna die to defend somebody's right 00:09:35.87\00:09:38.44 to believe what they want. 00:09:38.47\00:09:39.91 And you know, so would you die 00:09:39.94\00:09:41.78 to defend the Mormons 00:09:41.81\00:09:43.38 right for polygamy or the children of God? 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.58 They used the thing called fishy flirting. 00:09:46.61\00:09:49.45 They would use sex to lure people 00:09:49.48\00:09:52.25 into their religion. 00:09:52.29\00:09:54.26 It's not illegal. 00:09:54.29\00:09:55.62 Do you wanna defend it? 00:09:55.66\00:09:57.63 Well, technically if it's not legal. 00:09:57.66\00:09:58.99 I have to defend their conscience. 00:09:59.03\00:10:00.36 Yeah. 00:10:00.40\00:10:01.73 Well, so and so, and they came to us for help. 00:10:01.76\00:10:03.77 And I can't remember what it was. 00:10:03.80\00:10:06.43 We try to dilly-dally Mormon... These are difficult questions. 00:10:06.47\00:10:10.17 But remember, 00:10:10.21\00:10:11.54 if we don't watch this question, 00:10:11.57\00:10:13.27 we will get into a paternalistic attitude 00:10:13.31\00:10:15.74 that the Roman Church best exemplify, 00:10:15.78\00:10:18.21 where it knows 00:10:18.25\00:10:19.58 what's best for your eternal soul. 00:10:19.61\00:10:20.95 And as the Cardinal says, "Error has no right." 00:10:20.98\00:10:23.72 You're wrong. 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.09 So we know better we will force you 00:10:25.12\00:10:26.86 to behave a certain way. 00:10:26.89\00:10:29.39 Well, it's always, 00:10:29.42\00:10:31.79 in the end it's a matter aligned wrong. 00:10:31.83\00:10:34.63 We believe in religious freedom. 00:10:34.66\00:10:37.57 But at what point, if your religion, 00:10:37.60\00:10:39.93 you know, you don't want, well, I was gonna say, 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.04 vaccinate your kids but that gets a little sticky, 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.14 but we have always put restrictions on how, 00:10:44.17\00:10:49.04 on you can believe whatever you want, 00:10:49.08\00:10:51.61 but there are certain religious practices 00:10:51.65\00:10:54.22 that just because it comes under the name of religion, 00:10:54.25\00:10:57.72 you ain't gonna get government protection 00:10:57.75\00:11:00.76 and you should get government protection. 00:11:00.79\00:11:04.13 I remember quite a few years ago, 00:11:08.03\00:11:10.00 seeing a clip with the filmmaker, 00:11:10.03\00:11:12.87 an actor, Woody Allen was in a sensitivity session 00:11:12.90\00:11:16.20 and they were studying their navels. 00:11:16.24\00:11:18.47 And one of his companions went on and on 00:11:18.51\00:11:20.98 about all that he saw, 00:11:21.01\00:11:22.34 when he looked within and Woody Allen says, 00:11:22.38\00:11:24.55 "You must have a wide screen navel." 00:11:24.58\00:11:27.78 You can pull a lot of stuff 00:11:27.82\00:11:30.95 if not truth out of a navel. 00:11:30.99\00:11:33.96 Philosophy can end that way if you're not careful. 00:11:33.99\00:11:38.99 I think it's very significant that Paul, 00:11:39.03\00:11:40.90 when he went to the seat of philosophy, 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.30 to Athens and debated pretty articulately 00:11:43.33\00:11:47.10 with those philosophers. 00:11:47.14\00:11:49.30 Came away from it saying, 00:11:49.34\00:11:50.67 I determined to know nothing among you saved Jesus Christ 00:11:50.71\00:11:55.08 and Him crucified. 00:11:55.11\00:11:57.58 There should be a philosophical, rational, 00:11:57.61\00:12:00.68 well thought out based to our faith. 00:12:00.72\00:12:03.82 But at the end of the day, it's knowing a person, 00:12:03.85\00:12:07.56 not a viewpoint that will save us. 00:12:07.59\00:12:11.96 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:11.99\00:12:14.70
