Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break with guest Clifford Goldstein, 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.70 one of my quieter guest. 00:00:05.73\00:00:09.20 We were talking about anything but quietness, 00:00:09.24\00:00:12.21 the figurative agitation 00:00:12.24\00:00:15.68 we get back from readers, this can happen with listeners. 00:00:15.71\00:00:21.18 And how do you react to that? 00:00:21.22\00:00:22.92 And we've both have 00:00:22.95\00:00:24.52 very interesting experiences with that. 00:00:24.55\00:00:26.15 Well, when I edited Liberty, I get the wackiest letters, 00:00:26.19\00:00:29.82 and I publish them. 00:00:29.86\00:00:31.59 And then I would write the snide comments after 00:00:31.63\00:00:34.86 and I thought it was the most interesting 00:00:34.90\00:00:36.70 part of the magazine. 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.07 And I got away with it for a while 00:00:38.10\00:00:39.77 till my boss got on me. 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.44 And then at one point, he made me stop. 00:00:41.47\00:00:45.37 And then I wrote, "Well, I got to stop this because 00:00:45.41\00:00:47.91 too much flak from the boss." 00:00:47.94\00:00:49.64 I put it in there, you know. 00:00:49.68\00:00:51.01 Did you? Yeah, I put in there. 00:00:51.05\00:00:52.38 And I did it for a while, but I stopped, 00:00:52.41\00:00:53.75 really, because events... 00:00:53.78\00:00:55.12 It was the best part of the magazine. 00:00:55.15\00:00:56.48 Events have sped up so much. 00:00:56.52\00:00:57.85 It's very difficult to impossible 00:00:57.89\00:00:59.85 with something like Liberty 00:00:59.89\00:01:01.22 to put the latest thing in because there's... 00:01:01.26\00:01:04.66 Even if I drop the editorial in as we go to press, 00:01:04.69\00:01:07.30 which I do, it's still basically a month 00:01:07.33\00:01:10.00 until anyone reads them. 00:01:10.03\00:01:11.37 And then you get caught. 00:01:11.40\00:01:12.73 And with letters, it really was, 00:01:12.77\00:01:14.90 someone would send a letter in and that was the second issue 00:01:14.94\00:01:17.84 from them when they see it. 00:01:17.87\00:01:20.14 And then a few of them objected to. 00:01:20.18\00:01:21.74 What I myself would object, 00:01:21.78\00:01:23.24 I would take their letter do what you did, 00:01:23.28\00:01:25.05 not necessarily, 00:01:25.08\00:01:27.02 but I would put my answer sort of setting them straight. 00:01:27.05\00:01:29.25 Well, this is the bully pulpit that they didn't like, 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.22 where they would sort of skew it. 00:01:31.25\00:01:32.59 Well, you're the editor and that's your prerogative. 00:01:32.62\00:01:35.62 And one thing I do in Liberty, which I will defend, 00:01:35.66\00:01:39.26 as I've had to in front of the board. 00:01:39.29\00:01:43.13 Not every article is exactly as I would want. 00:01:43.16\00:01:47.00 But it's not right for an editor to take 00:01:47.04\00:01:49.67 someone's philosophical and factual and, you know, 00:01:49.70\00:01:53.17 the production of their mind and twist it your way. 00:01:53.21\00:01:56.75 You know, it would... 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.11 Why even steal somebody's published articles 00:01:58.15\00:01:59.88 that I didn't necessarily agree with? 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.02 Yeah, I'm not quite that far off. 00:02:02.05\00:02:03.39 I thought it was a valid point, you know. 00:02:03.42\00:02:05.42 Like I remember, it was, in fact I used to have... 00:02:05.45\00:02:09.66 Nick Miller, I think you've had on the show, 00:02:09.69\00:02:12.19 he had an article one time about prison... 00:02:12.23\00:02:15.00 You know, some guy is a mass murderer, 00:02:15.03\00:02:17.33 you know, rapist, he does a horrible, and he's in jail. 00:02:17.37\00:02:21.27 And, you know, what he wants, 00:02:21.30\00:02:22.64 you know, some religious thing or something. 00:02:22.67\00:02:25.34 And they go to court to sue 00:02:25.37\00:02:27.24 to give some violent serial killer 00:02:27.28\00:02:30.28 or some secular predator. 00:02:30.31\00:02:32.01 But those cases are not usually really about 00:02:32.05\00:02:34.58 that crazy, perverted guy. 00:02:34.62\00:02:36.89 There's a principle that take... 00:02:36.92\00:02:38.25 There's a principle. Yeah, but I get. 00:02:38.29\00:02:39.62 But even the principle, 00:02:39.65\00:02:40.99 and I get, but to put it this way, 00:02:41.02\00:02:42.42 I disagreed with Nick on it. 00:02:42.46\00:02:45.13 But, you know, he's a good scholar, 00:02:45.16\00:02:46.76 knows religious liberty. 00:02:46.80\00:02:48.60 And I've read his article, 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.60 and I didn't even comment on it. 00:02:50.63\00:02:52.07 You know, as long as it wasn't something wacko, 00:02:52.10\00:02:56.64 you know, there could be different views on it. 00:02:56.67\00:02:59.01 I had no problem running different views on it, 00:02:59.04\00:03:02.04 even if I didn't agree with it. 00:03:02.08\00:03:03.71 Well, you know, I don't believe in forcing views on people, 00:03:03.75\00:03:07.68 any more than you. 00:03:07.72\00:03:09.05 But that's a different approach. 00:03:09.08\00:03:10.42 When you have a publication, 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.45 there has to be a viewpoint that it's known for. 00:03:12.49\00:03:15.29 And so I wasn't inclined to do... 00:03:15.32\00:03:18.69 I think you did sometimes with good effect. 00:03:18.73\00:03:20.63 You'd have two sides of an argument, 00:03:20.66\00:03:22.13 you put both of them on. 00:03:22.16\00:03:24.00 What do you mean, do that? I just run with other. 00:03:24.03\00:03:25.67 I will put an article in there may be some... 00:03:25.70\00:03:28.90 aspects of that I'm uncomfortable with 00:03:28.94\00:03:31.57 and I would write a footnote. 00:03:31.61\00:03:33.51 I remember D. James Kennedy 00:03:33.54\00:03:34.94 pushing for the Jones amendment wanting to break down 00:03:34.98\00:03:38.08 the constitutional inhibitions about churches 00:03:38.11\00:03:41.22 acting as political parties. 00:03:41.25\00:03:42.58 I put it in, I told him, I said, "I'll run your article, 00:03:42.62\00:03:44.89 I won't change it but I will put a footnote." 00:03:44.92\00:03:47.29 And I explained in the editorial footnote, 00:03:47.32\00:03:50.19 why we differ from that position, 00:03:50.23\00:03:51.83 why we respect it, but it was wrong 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.66 from a religious liberty point view. 00:03:53.70\00:03:55.03 I remember, I used to, 00:03:55.06\00:03:57.07 the magazine I salivated over for years, 00:03:57.10\00:04:00.24 which is The New Republic. 00:04:00.27\00:04:01.90 This is the old New Republic... And you so be on it. 00:04:01.94\00:04:03.74 Not the new one, it's been an intellectual flop. 00:04:03.77\00:04:06.54 Be careful they might sue us. 00:04:06.57\00:04:07.98 For 15 years. 00:04:08.01\00:04:09.34 I'm talking about the old New Republic. 00:04:09.38\00:04:10.81 But you were ardent reader. Oh, yeah. 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.28 And I remember, you know, they were definitely 00:04:12.31\00:04:14.68 more left wing and I still remember 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.75 they had an article in there. 00:04:16.79\00:04:19.45 It was Bush running against Clinton, okay? 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.89 Clinton... 00:04:22.92\00:04:24.26 And I remember they had a beautiful arc 00:04:24.29\00:04:25.79 in there by Richard Vigilante. 00:04:25.83\00:04:27.83 He said the case for Bush, 00:04:27.86\00:04:29.60 will you knew not one person in the New Republic 00:04:29.63\00:04:32.57 was going to vote for Bush, and they read that article. 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.60 And I thought, you know, I really... 00:04:35.64\00:04:37.54 That's intellectual honesty. 00:04:37.57\00:04:38.91 And I wanted to make that somewhat, 00:04:38.94\00:04:43.28 I mean, you don't want to do with that often. 00:04:43.31\00:04:45.28 But at times, 00:04:45.31\00:04:46.65 I would run something as long as it wasn't 00:04:46.68\00:04:49.98 whackos stuff that I didn't necessarily... 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.95 As I said, a perfect example 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.42 was Nick on the prisoner rights, 00:04:54.46\00:04:56.36 the prisoner rights, 00:04:56.39\00:04:57.73 and I just wasn't as somebody who's in jail, 00:04:57.76\00:05:02.36 you lose certain rights, okay? 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.23 And religious liberty too, I mean, how far, 00:05:05.27\00:05:08.60 you know, I mean, 'cause some of those guys 00:05:08.64\00:05:10.11 really took it to extremes. 00:05:10.14\00:05:11.94 Be careful, you know... 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.88 Yeah, you might throw, yeah. 00:05:14.91\00:05:16.24 Prison right, you do lose rights. 00:05:16.28\00:05:18.28 But think about when there's a persecution underway, 00:05:18.31\00:05:21.88 which could even happen in the United States 00:05:21.92\00:05:23.69 where for COVID, 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.42 churches that are opening now 00:05:26.45\00:05:28.52 there's even a threat against one pastor, 00:05:28.56\00:05:30.19 I know of that he's defying the government. 00:05:30.23\00:05:32.16 You can agree or disagree with the government mandates, 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.70 he's defying it on principle. 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.47 It's possible he could go to prison for probably 00:05:37.50\00:05:39.93 not more than a few weeks in this case. 00:05:39.97\00:05:42.70 But the judge can pretty much determine where you get sent. 00:05:42.74\00:05:46.24 And in prison, that person could be 00:05:46.27\00:05:50.78 persecuted depending on the prison. 00:05:50.81\00:05:52.51 They could be brutalized, many things have happened. 00:05:52.55\00:05:55.85 And because we're always writing about 00:05:55.88\00:05:58.15 whether you need a certain diet or whatever. 00:05:58.19\00:06:00.49 But think about it another way. 00:06:00.52\00:06:03.69 There's a whole group that the state doesn't like 00:06:03.73\00:06:05.76 their religious viewpoint. 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.13 So on technicality, 00:06:07.16\00:06:08.66 they can get sent into prison 00:06:08.70\00:06:10.03 where they lose all their rights 00:06:10.07\00:06:11.40 and then all sorts of mental and physical abuse 00:06:11.43\00:06:14.80 can be visited on there. 00:06:14.84\00:06:16.17 Well, that's bad. That's a whole separate... 00:06:16.20\00:06:17.94 Well, let's go to a real world situation in the Soviet Union, 00:06:17.97\00:06:20.84 in its waning days. 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.21 Yeah, I remember that... 00:06:22.24\00:06:23.58 Philosophically didn't agree with religion, 00:06:23.61\00:06:25.58 they went persecuting it like Stalin did. 00:06:25.61\00:06:27.85 But they were starting to treat people of faith 00:06:27.88\00:06:30.42 and conviction of faith as mental jobs. 00:06:30.45\00:06:33.76 And they would put him in a mental institution 00:06:33.79\00:06:36.19 where they were subjected to... 00:06:36.22\00:06:38.39 all sorts of chemical treatments 00:06:38.43\00:06:40.10 and subhuman treatment, wrong, 00:06:40.13\00:06:44.63 but it all started because 00:06:44.67\00:06:46.00 they were flipped on to the side 00:06:46.03\00:06:47.37 where they lost their rights 00:06:47.40\00:06:48.74 just because of religious viewpoint. 00:06:48.77\00:06:50.31 Well, that's a separate... That's not work... 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.07 Well, whatever, whatever we obviously agree, 00:06:52.11\00:06:54.18 that's bad, and so on. 00:06:54.21\00:06:55.54 And that was one of the geniuses 00:06:55.58\00:06:56.91 of the founding fathers in separating church and state, 00:06:56.95\00:07:01.72 and giving us this religious liberty. 00:07:01.75\00:07:03.08 But we need to be wearying and I've picked this up 00:07:03.12\00:07:05.75 in the years that I've been editing Liberty, 00:07:05.79\00:07:07.52 except there's a Stalin or you know, 00:07:07.56\00:07:09.96 some Pol Pot of someone that's gonna just wipe you off 00:07:09.99\00:07:12.89 because, you know, you have a tune 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.40 or look like you might be religious or educated. 00:07:15.43\00:07:18.73 By and large, persecution in the modern world 00:07:18.77\00:07:22.00 is on technicalities, lose your building permit. 00:07:22.04\00:07:26.24 It could be as simple. 00:07:26.27\00:07:27.61 And I think this is the way it'll come in the US 00:07:27.64\00:07:30.35 if when it comes. 00:07:30.38\00:07:32.25 They don't like say, Seventh-day Adventists. 00:07:32.28\00:07:34.95 So the police are parked around the corner 00:07:34.98\00:07:36.89 from the Adventist Church, 00:07:36.92\00:07:38.25 when you get out of church and just stop people 00:07:38.29\00:07:41.16 one after the other, 00:07:41.19\00:07:43.26 you know, your traffic light doesn't look good or whatever. 00:07:43.29\00:07:46.13 Do you have any money? 00:07:46.16\00:07:47.86 You know, the police can do this. 00:07:47.90\00:07:50.90 Fine you've got money, you gave offering. 00:07:50.93\00:07:52.77 So you've got your wallet with you, take all your money. 00:07:52.80\00:07:55.57 What they're doing in some places now, credit card, 00:07:55.60\00:07:58.64 run it to the limit, empty your credit card, bye. 00:07:58.67\00:08:01.91 So basically, there could be a systematic effort 00:08:01.94\00:08:05.11 to fleece people as they leave. 00:08:05.15\00:08:07.15 And you wouldn't think, "Oh, that's religious persecution, " 00:08:07.18\00:08:09.42 but it would arise from nothing but religious... 00:08:09.45\00:08:12.65 Well, that's a separate from what we were talking about. 00:08:12.69\00:08:14.12 But yeah, that is bad. 00:08:14.16\00:08:15.66 That is bad. 00:08:15.69\00:08:17.03 And, but that's how it happens. 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.63 Not in the US yet, particularly but in voting, 00:08:18.66\00:08:21.56 which would jump through, come through. 00:08:21.60\00:08:23.23 That's how the voters were intimidated. 00:08:23.26\00:08:27.54 Police down the street from a voting area 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.67 in a certain precinct and intimidate people. 00:08:30.71\00:08:34.34 As we even saw this time, people with guns hanging about, 00:08:34.38\00:08:37.68 up front monitoring. 00:08:37.71\00:08:39.95 There's a lot of things that show an attitude 00:08:39.98\00:08:42.42 toward a certain viewpoint, either voting a certain party, 00:08:42.45\00:08:45.52 or worshiping a certain way. 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.22 And it may not appear as persecution. 00:08:47.26\00:08:50.23 You know, what you're talking about reminds me 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.86 there was an article that came out 00:08:53.90\00:08:55.70 in the Atlantic Monthly at the end of last year. 00:08:55.73\00:08:59.97 And, you know, it was freaky, because it was, 00:09:00.00\00:09:03.17 how to avert a civil war. 00:09:03.20\00:09:06.71 So it almost wasn't, 00:09:06.74\00:09:08.61 we might have a civil war or whatever, 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.81 it was almost like the civil war is coming, 00:09:10.85\00:09:14.42 and what can we do to stop it. 00:09:14.45\00:09:16.15 Now that's pretty freaky. 00:09:16.18\00:09:18.49 And this was even before the COVID thing came, 00:09:18.52\00:09:23.53 and COVID... 00:09:23.56\00:09:24.89 Whoa, how quickly life changed, 00:09:24.93\00:09:29.66 how quickly everything changed, 00:09:29.70\00:09:32.97 things we took for granted, just shushed, were gone. 00:09:33.00\00:09:37.97 And if they were worried about that then before COVID, 00:09:38.01\00:09:41.71 after COVID, and there was a line in there, 00:09:41.74\00:09:46.72 where the author said the American experiment 00:09:46.75\00:09:50.29 is not guaranteed to last forever. 00:09:50.32\00:09:55.09 And if you happen to be into prophecy, 00:09:55.12\00:09:58.73 and understand a little of America, 00:09:58.76\00:10:01.63 in prophecy, it was like, wow! 00:10:01.66\00:10:05.17 Here's the secular magazine saying something 00:10:05.20\00:10:09.77 very, very scary, 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.81 more scary than they realize. 00:10:12.84\00:10:17.28 Jesus Christ said that this gospel of the kingdom, 00:10:17.31\00:10:22.22 not of a Great America or a United Europe, 00:10:22.25\00:10:26.59 this gospel of the kingdom, the kingdom of God 00:10:26.62\00:10:29.82 shall be preached unto all nations as a witness, 00:10:29.86\00:10:33.03 and then the end will come. 00:10:33.06\00:10:36.13 In many ways, our age reminds us 00:10:36.16\00:10:38.77 that the end is near. 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.44 But there is a great work to be done. 00:10:40.47\00:10:43.10 And as we've discussed on this program, 00:10:43.14\00:10:45.14 many countries may have a nominal religious connection. 00:10:45.17\00:10:48.84 Many countries may nominally be 00:10:48.88\00:10:51.51 part of what used to be called Christendom. 00:10:51.55\00:10:55.15 But in this age of COVID, this age of social dislocation, 00:10:55.18\00:10:59.82 this age of the intimations of financial collapse 00:10:59.85\00:11:03.36 and disarray, 00:11:03.39\00:11:04.73 it's worth remembering that this gospel 00:11:04.76\00:11:07.60 of the kingdom still needs to be preached to every nation, 00:11:07.63\00:11:11.40 kindred and tongue. 00:11:11.43\00:11:12.77 And when that's done, and not until that's done, 00:11:12.80\00:11:16.10 the end will surely come. 00:11:16.14\00:11:20.81 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:20.84\00:11:23.55
