Welcome to Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.46\00:00:29.29 This is the program designed to inform you, 00:00:29.32\00:00:32.66 get you thinking, and, analyze religious liberty in the US 00:00:32.69\00:00:37.30 and around the world. 00:00:37.33\00:00:38.73 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:38.77\00:00:42.10 and my guest on the program, Pati Lawrence. 00:00:42.14\00:00:44.61 Thank you. 00:00:44.64\00:00:45.97 An activist and a miracle worker 00:00:46.01\00:00:49.21 on behalf of the Lord for religious liberty. 00:00:49.24\00:00:51.41 Thank you. 00:00:51.45\00:00:52.78 You've taken the vision that many of us 00:00:52.81\00:00:55.05 have for religious liberty and put it into action. 00:00:55.08\00:00:57.22 We've had a number of programs already where you shared 00:00:58.75\00:01:01.36 some of these experiences that I hope in this too, 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.59 but let's put it on a global scale 00:01:04.63\00:01:06.59 where we're living right now 00:01:06.63\00:01:08.06 in the middle as we record this. 00:01:08.10\00:01:10.17 I'm sure we're not anywhere 00:01:10.20\00:01:11.73 near the end of the global pandemic with COVID-19. 00:01:11.77\00:01:16.60 It's changed the world in ways we still are finding out. 00:01:16.64\00:01:21.31 How do you think it affects religious liberty though? 00:01:22.98\00:01:25.98 You think this is an overall harm 00:01:26.01\00:01:29.18 or a help to religious liberty? 00:01:29.22\00:01:30.55 Is it presenting opportunities 00:01:30.59\00:01:32.05 or is it just putting us back in a box? 00:01:32.09\00:01:35.72 I think it is presented opportunities 00:01:35.76\00:01:37.53 because of Zoom, because of teleconferencing, 00:01:37.56\00:01:40.00 I may not be at our churches, 00:01:40.03\00:01:42.13 handing out brochures or speaking and saying, 00:01:42.16\00:01:44.60 "If you have a accommodation, if you need accommodation, 00:01:44.63\00:01:48.30 if you have a problem at work." 00:01:48.34\00:01:49.67 I'm not in person doing it, 00:01:49.70\00:01:51.24 but I am still doing it on Zoom. 00:01:51.27\00:01:53.34 And now those that do know me, "Oh, this... 00:01:53.38\00:01:56.11 Oh, that's Pati, yes, religious liberty." 00:01:56.14\00:01:58.15 They remember, they think about it. 00:01:58.18\00:01:59.71 Before COVID, every now and then 00:02:00.72\00:02:02.42 I would still receive a phone call and saying, 00:02:02.45\00:02:05.25 "Pati, can you help me up? 00:02:05.29\00:02:06.62 My job wants to change the rotation of the work. 00:02:06.65\00:02:08.69 They know I don't work on Saturday. 00:02:08.72\00:02:10.59 Now they're saying 00:02:10.63\00:02:11.96 I have to or I could lose my job." 00:02:11.99\00:02:14.00 And so I put them in contact with you, yeah. 00:02:14.03\00:02:15.36 Yes, people are, obviously for many reasons, 00:02:15.40\00:02:18.07 not least of which religious convictions, 00:02:18.10\00:02:19.73 their jobs are a little shaky. 00:02:19.77\00:02:21.80 There's not the job security as before. 00:02:21.84\00:02:24.34 But now because of COVID, I've heard some concerns also. 00:02:24.37\00:02:27.64 Well, our company closed down, 00:02:27.68\00:02:29.38 they're looking to open up again. 00:02:29.41\00:02:30.75 But are they going to not call me back to work 00:02:30.78\00:02:33.72 because they see that I'm on a limited schedule, 00:02:33.75\00:02:36.65 because I won't work on Saturday, 00:02:36.69\00:02:39.32 they may use COVID as an excuse to not bring them back to work. 00:02:39.35\00:02:41.99 And you got to what I was fishing for, 00:02:42.02\00:02:44.26 we look around the world, not just the US 00:02:44.29\00:02:46.56 and there is clearly a phenomenon of many countries, 00:02:46.59\00:02:50.90 not the US which were already causing 00:02:50.93\00:02:54.60 or creating religious liberty problems for some citizens, 00:02:54.64\00:02:57.87 minority religions, particularly. 00:02:57.91\00:03:00.14 And undercover or because of the COVID emergency 00:03:00.18\00:03:03.04 they're doubling down, becoming even more aggressive, 00:03:03.08\00:03:06.01 and China, Exhibit A that they were harassing 00:03:06.05\00:03:09.62 and imprisoning and torturing the Uyghur minority 00:03:09.65\00:03:14.59 because of their Islamic faith and perceived radicalism 00:03:14.62\00:03:17.96 which I'm sure it existed, but not the whole population. 00:03:17.99\00:03:21.20 And you know, many hundreds of thousands 00:03:21.23\00:03:24.07 are in detention camps and subject to whatever... 00:03:24.10\00:03:26.33 So they've doubled down during the COVID thing. 00:03:26.37\00:03:29.04 Of course, Christians are on the fringes 00:03:29.07\00:03:31.61 of legality unless they're part of the three self 00:03:31.64\00:03:34.44 totally government controlled movement, again persecuted. 00:03:34.48\00:03:37.38 We've seen that ratchet up. 00:03:37.41\00:03:39.38 But what about the US? 00:03:39.41\00:03:40.75 I've thought about this many times, 00:03:40.78\00:03:44.09 it seems to me, at least inadvertently, 00:03:44.12\00:03:47.16 the US has caused some religious problems 00:03:47.19\00:03:52.49 on these no meeting orders. 00:03:52.53\00:03:55.13 They've sort of shut down certain churches, I don't know, 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.53 I really can't see any forethought to it. 00:03:58.57\00:04:01.30 Other than perhaps in California, 00:04:01.34\00:04:04.14 there's an argument to be made that they don't think, 00:04:04.17\00:04:07.14 don't have great respect for religious faith versus, 00:04:07.18\00:04:10.05 you know, the worldly, scientific sort of modern man 00:04:10.08\00:04:13.38 approach and religion is a hangover 00:04:13.42\00:04:15.22 from the Dark Ages. 00:04:15.25\00:04:16.79 So it's not got great respect. 00:04:16.82\00:04:18.62 But I don't, I can't make a case 00:04:20.42\00:04:22.72 that there's over persecution of religion in the US, 00:04:22.76\00:04:25.59 but it's happening regardless. 00:04:25.63\00:04:28.50 I've heard different schools of thought, 00:04:28.53\00:04:30.23 I've heard some members say, "We should be open, 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.53 they should allow us in. 00:04:32.57\00:04:33.90 We'll be careful, we'll take precaution." 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.24 Then on the other hand, I've heard, 00:04:36.27\00:04:38.14 "You know, but it is about health. 00:04:38.17\00:04:39.97 It is about being safe, 00:04:40.01\00:04:41.98 and not affecting other people." 00:04:42.01\00:04:43.51 You know, what if I was responsible 00:04:43.55\00:04:44.95 for someone else being sick 00:04:44.98\00:04:47.62 because we were in an enclosed area. 00:04:47.65\00:04:50.09 But I think we've all learned enough to wear the masks, 00:04:50.12\00:04:52.59 wash our hands, keep distance and God is important 00:04:52.62\00:04:56.79 and if anything, for example, my church in Long Beach. 00:04:56.83\00:04:59.86 We have vespers on Friday evenings at 7 pm. 00:04:59.89\00:05:03.06 And then on Sabbath at 4 pm 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.10 to not keep our church closed down, 00:05:05.13\00:05:07.10 but we're in the parking lot. 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.30 We're outside distanced in the parking lot 00:05:09.34\00:05:12.04 and it's been a wonderful gathering, 00:05:12.07\00:05:13.88 and we can fellowship together again. 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.41 So I think if you can't open the churches 00:05:15.44\00:05:17.41 and go inside and worship, there's other alternatives. 00:05:17.45\00:05:21.02 It was certainly good to talk to people even though, 00:05:21.05\00:05:24.42 well, not even though especially 00:05:24.45\00:05:26.02 since it was outdoors, breezy. 00:05:26.05\00:05:28.86 People well spaced, a nice shade canopy 00:05:28.89\00:05:31.59 and others tucked away in little picnic corners. 00:05:31.63\00:05:34.56 To me it had a Sunday afternoon, 00:05:34.60\00:05:36.06 well not Sunday, Saturday afternoon in the park field. 00:05:36.10\00:05:38.60 But I didn't notice all of them. 00:05:39.83\00:05:42.14 But you remarked on some of the comments 00:05:42.17\00:05:44.97 that followed about the sermon, that was gratifying. 00:05:45.01\00:05:47.28 And first I want to say 00:05:47.31\00:05:48.64 there's an example of a creative way 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.28 to fellowship without having the church open. 00:05:50.31\00:05:52.21 It's outdoors, but it's open. 00:05:52.25\00:05:54.25 I think if more churches did maybe thought 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.08 a little more creatively, 00:05:56.12\00:05:57.65 they would have that experience also. 00:05:57.69\00:05:59.45 I did, I looked at the comments 00:05:59.49\00:06:00.82 that were made on your sermon that day, 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.29 and one especially jumped out at me, 00:06:02.32\00:06:04.33 because of being involved in religious liberty. 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.49 And this was could have been, and may be still, 00:06:06.53\00:06:09.26 maybe I should reach out to her, 00:06:09.30\00:06:10.83 could be still a request, 00:06:10.87\00:06:12.43 or she may have a request for an accommodation. 00:06:12.47\00:06:14.74 She's a college student, 00:06:14.77\00:06:16.10 I believe she's a college student, 00:06:16.14\00:06:17.47 and she says, "Thank you, Pastor Steed, for your message. 00:06:17.51\00:06:20.71 I was struggling this week, 00:06:20.74\00:06:22.21 because my school set the due date of homework for Saturday. 00:06:22.24\00:06:27.55 But because they want us to worship on Sunday, 00:06:27.58\00:06:29.85 like they do, but thank you. 00:06:29.88\00:06:32.55 I was reassured to keep the Sabbath. 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.92 God is always more important than grades." 00:06:35.96\00:06:38.86 So she chose to not do her homework. 00:06:38.89\00:06:41.40 She was late on her homework to be there, 00:06:41.43\00:06:43.97 and then heard your sermon and felt reassured. 00:06:44.00\00:06:48.14 This may be a request for accommodation later on. 00:06:48.17\00:06:51.34 Well, maybe the next week, 00:06:51.37\00:06:52.71 she'll get it done by Friday and turn-in, right? 00:06:52.74\00:06:54.91 There's usually no penalty for early turn-ins. 00:06:56.51\00:06:58.71 Also, this is another example how you just don't know 00:06:58.75\00:07:01.18 when you're going to plant that seed. 00:07:01.22\00:07:02.55 You don't know. 00:07:02.58\00:07:03.92 You don't know where you're going to be at that moment 00:07:03.95\00:07:05.72 when someone needs you to be there. 00:07:05.75\00:07:07.09 Yeah. 00:07:07.12\00:07:08.46 And that's the reward of teaching 00:07:08.49\00:07:10.23 religious liberty of preaching it. 00:07:10.26\00:07:11.69 The other side is there seems to be as the Bible 00:07:12.86\00:07:15.26 keeps saying, you know, 00:07:15.30\00:07:16.63 "Do you hear not, do you see not?" 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.03 You know what, you know, God says, 00:07:18.07\00:07:19.80 "How do I get through to you people? 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.20 I sometimes feel it. 00:07:21.24\00:07:22.57 But that's not really for us to get too worried about, 00:07:22.60\00:07:25.27 I think global leaders. 00:07:25.31\00:07:26.81 But what you were saying about White Memorial, 00:07:26.84\00:07:29.34 it was nicely set up, but it's worth remembering 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.61 that that was not allowed 00:07:31.65\00:07:32.98 to many churches for a long time. 00:07:33.01\00:07:34.82 They were not allowed to even in a number of cases 00:07:34.85\00:07:37.59 to even have a drive-thru church, 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.66 where they sat in their cars and looked at the screen 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.39 or heard of, you know, broadcast. 00:07:44.43\00:07:47.06 That's bizarre. 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.56 There was no case to be made whatsoever 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.93 for contagion in that situation. 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.54 And again, I don't see forethought, 00:07:54.57\00:07:56.71 but I see an easy dismissal of the religious conscience 00:07:56.74\00:08:01.78 rights of people in such prohibitions. 00:08:01.81\00:08:04.38 So it needs a little thinking about, 00:08:04.41\00:08:07.45 even in a country as this administration 00:08:07.48\00:08:10.49 has speak loudly and constantly of religious freedom. 00:08:10.52\00:08:13.66 Talk is cheap. 00:08:14.79\00:08:16.69 It's in the, the proof is in the pudding 00:08:16.73\00:08:19.36 to mix not metaphors, but cliches. 00:08:19.39\00:08:22.30 Well, and I think too at the beginning of this, 00:08:22.33\00:08:24.13 we didn't really and maybe still 00:08:24.17\00:08:25.50 we really don't know much about COVID. 00:08:25.53\00:08:27.04 No, it's uncharted territory. 00:08:27.07\00:08:28.40 Experts don't know. 00:08:28.44\00:08:29.77 So if someone is elderly or has an underlying condition, 00:08:29.80\00:08:32.17 then, of course, stay home. 00:08:32.21\00:08:34.08 Don't go out to a parking lot or a church outdoor. 00:08:34.11\00:08:37.65 It's up to them to make the decision. 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.78 But I know I missed fellowshipping in person. 00:08:40.82\00:08:42.88 I do, I miss, I miss it. 00:08:42.92\00:08:45.42 But again, let's talk about the world under COVID. 00:08:45.45\00:08:49.82 China's restricting under... 00:08:49.86\00:08:52.39 Well, not so much undercover, 00:08:52.43\00:08:53.76 but they're not getting into so much trouble 00:08:53.80\00:08:55.40 for the continued or even increased 00:08:55.43\00:08:58.20 harassment of Christians, Muslim Uyghurs and so on. 00:08:58.23\00:09:01.80 And we've seen that in many other countries, 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.81 the Middle East. 00:09:04.84\00:09:06.17 You don't hear about it much in the US anymore, 00:09:07.38\00:09:09.11 but the religious purging continues. 00:09:09.14\00:09:12.01 Christians are being persecuted by all factions 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.48 in the Middle East conflict. 00:09:16.52\00:09:18.19 In India, I know there's been 00:09:21.42\00:09:23.86 increased violence against Christians. 00:09:23.89\00:09:27.86 They're sociological reasons. 00:09:27.90\00:09:30.60 Christians are turning the Untouchables 00:09:30.63\00:09:33.64 in particular are turning to Christianity is a way 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.70 to escape the repression of their caste system. 00:09:35.74\00:09:39.17 But India is suffering under COVID. 00:09:39.21\00:09:41.21 And again, sweeping these, 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.01 these religious issues to the side. 00:09:44.05\00:09:46.21 You know, when I was in the airport 00:09:46.25\00:09:47.58 coming out here, I had over a stay, 00:09:47.62\00:09:49.32 a layover in Salt Lake City. 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.35 And I'm standing around, there's a gentleman there. 00:09:51.39\00:09:53.72 And he says, you know, I just guess he's an American. 00:09:53.76\00:09:56.32 He was going home. 00:09:56.36\00:09:57.69 He says, "I just came from Taiwan. 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.29 He said, People, most people wear masks out in public. 00:09:59.33\00:10:02.00 A lot of them don't. 00:10:02.03\00:10:03.43 There's no COVID going on there. 00:10:03.47\00:10:04.80 No one's fearing, no one's closing down. 00:10:04.83\00:10:06.67 Everything is open and running, 00:10:06.70\00:10:08.47 as usual except for maybe a mask or two." 00:10:08.50\00:10:11.01 This is in Taiwan. 00:10:11.04\00:10:12.61 He says, "It's very relaxed and there's no issues with... 00:10:12.64\00:10:14.41 There's a handful of cases. 00:10:14.44\00:10:16.18 Yeah, a handful of cases. 00:10:16.21\00:10:17.75 And yet, nothing is closed down. 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.08 Schools, churches, businesses, everything was open. 00:10:20.12\00:10:23.49 Well, it's hard to know, I mean... 00:10:23.52\00:10:26.05 The best I can come up with, you know, 00:10:26.09\00:10:27.42 viruses waft on the wind or spread through hotspots 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.66 and you don't know the way it's spread, 00:10:30.69\00:10:33.46 but I feel that we're very vulnerable in the US, 00:10:33.50\00:10:36.83 in the West, perhaps. 00:10:36.87\00:10:38.37 We don't have a tradition like 00:10:38.40\00:10:39.73 they do in Asia of wearing masks, 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.80 the best of times they wear them 00:10:41.84\00:10:43.17 when someone has a cold, they wear a mask. 00:10:43.20\00:10:44.77 Beyond that, we have a health system 00:10:44.81\00:10:47.18 that we're constantly touting, 00:10:47.21\00:10:48.54 but it is not designed for the average citizen. 00:10:48.58\00:10:50.88 If you have the money, you get good service, 00:10:50.91\00:10:52.61 if not, not much. 00:10:52.65\00:10:54.78 So it's not good to respond to an overall thing. 00:10:54.82\00:10:58.15 Very unhealthy population supported by medicinal backup, 00:10:58.19\00:11:01.92 but there's a huge amount of obese people, 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.93 a huge amount of diabetics and on and on. 00:11:04.96\00:11:08.40 So we are actually very vulnerable 00:11:08.43\00:11:09.96 and an older population, 00:11:10.00\00:11:12.00 like Japan, interestingly enough, 00:11:12.03\00:11:13.70 but an older population that's more vulnerable 00:11:13.74\00:11:16.40 for in their own immune system dropping away 00:11:16.44\00:11:18.67 plus other health issues. 00:11:18.71\00:11:20.38 Fauci... 00:11:20.41\00:11:21.74 We're getting off religious liberty, 00:11:21.78\00:11:23.11 but Fauci mentioned recently that I think only 6% of people 00:11:23.14\00:11:26.88 die from COVID alone. 00:11:26.92\00:11:28.25 There are always co-morbidities otherwise. 00:11:28.28\00:11:30.32 Doesn't mean the COVID didn't kill them, 00:11:31.49\00:11:34.12 but without the co-morbidity 00:11:34.16\00:11:36.12 they might not have died then of that disease. 00:11:36.16\00:11:38.99 So it's a great stress on the world 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.10 and religious liberty is one of the casualties, 00:11:41.13\00:11:43.87 at least in my view. 00:11:43.90\00:11:45.70 I agree. 00:11:45.73\00:11:47.07 And we must be vigilant 00:11:47.10\00:11:48.44 when it comes to our religious liberty rights. 00:11:48.47\00:11:49.80 And what I often say when I'm out in the public 00:11:49.84\00:11:52.17 and even with elected officials, 00:11:52.21\00:11:54.28 I say that this is a God given human right. 00:11:54.31\00:11:56.64 This is for everyone, believers or non-believers, and 00:11:56.68\00:12:00.38 no man, no person, and no government 00:12:00.42\00:12:03.59 should come between us and our conscience. 00:12:03.62\00:12:05.09 Absolutely. 00:12:05.12\00:12:06.45 And this is how the US government sees it. 00:12:06.49\00:12:08.82 You know, some people Adventists thinking 00:12:08.86\00:12:11.53 that they want Sabbath accommodation, 00:12:11.56\00:12:13.40 they think that or they're told by their employer, 00:12:13.43\00:12:15.20 and you know, well, 00:12:15.23\00:12:16.56 you can get a letter from your church, 00:12:16.60\00:12:17.93 letting you off the hook or whatever, that's irrelevant. 00:12:17.97\00:12:20.44 The church can believe something totally different. 00:12:20.47\00:12:22.40 But if you are convicted on that point, 00:12:22.44\00:12:24.17 it should be honored. 00:12:24.21\00:12:25.54 And that's, I think that's wonderful. 00:12:26.61\00:12:28.74 And it does underscore I think the separation of church 00:12:28.78\00:12:32.08 and state of the US, they're not concerned 00:12:32.11\00:12:33.72 about church dogma, 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.08 they are concerned about the individual, 00:12:35.12\00:12:36.79 their rights, their conscience. 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.52 It's a human right. 00:12:38.55\00:12:39.89 Yeah. 00:12:39.92\00:12:41.26 But there's no question that in a COVID panic era, 00:12:41.29\00:12:45.89 one of the casualties 00:12:45.93\00:12:47.26 or at least the threatened casualties 00:12:47.30\00:12:49.86 is religious liberty. 00:12:49.90\00:12:51.23 Stay with us. 00:12:51.27\00:12:52.60 We'll be back after a short break 00:12:52.63\00:12:53.97 to continue this discussion. 00:12:54.00\00:12:55.34
