Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.76\00:00:28.46 This is your program 00:00:28.49\00:00:30.03 designed to bring you news, views, up-to-date information, 00:00:30.06\00:00:32.89 and even analysis of religious liberty 00:00:32.93\00:00:35.90 in the United States and around the world. 00:00:35.93\00:00:38.23 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine. 00:00:38.27\00:00:42.00 And my guest on this program is Pati Lawrence, 00:00:42.04\00:00:45.31 and they might know pretty well. 00:00:45.34\00:00:47.34 Yes, they should, yes. 00:00:47.38\00:00:48.71 Now we've had many contacts. Yes. 00:00:48.74\00:00:50.18 And I wanna talk about one of our contacts recently, 00:00:50.21\00:00:54.18 and I didn't start off by directly contacting you. 00:00:54.22\00:00:57.69 We're in a COVID panic in some ways, 00:00:57.72\00:01:01.62 the whole western world 00:01:01.66\00:01:02.99 and the United States is rocking over it. 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.16 And one of the side effects 00:01:05.19\00:01:07.93 is the churches really had to scale back 00:01:07.96\00:01:11.27 and many of what things that they do 00:01:11.30\00:01:13.10 including meeting in the church. 00:01:13.13\00:01:14.94 And that's frustrated me as a religious liberty worker 00:01:14.97\00:01:20.58 and as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:20.61\00:01:21.94 preparing for the time of trouble, 00:01:21.98\00:01:23.85 at a time when it will be difficult 00:01:23.88\00:01:25.21 to do this and that, 00:01:25.25\00:01:26.58 and the other will be prevented. 00:01:26.61\00:01:28.48 And here, it's like the switches turned 00:01:28.52\00:01:30.69 and nothing is going on of any consequence. 00:01:30.72\00:01:34.26 And I was taken by news reports of a church, 00:01:34.29\00:01:38.86 a large mega-church as a conundrum. 00:01:38.89\00:01:42.03 A mega church in California 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.40 that was meeting 00:01:44.43\00:01:45.77 in defiance of the government orders. 00:01:45.80\00:01:48.60 And so I contacted our religious liberty people 00:01:48.64\00:01:53.24 for California, and they contacted you. 00:01:53.27\00:01:55.38 Me. 00:01:55.41\00:01:56.75 Because I wanted also to speak 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.25 to a Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:58.28\00:01:59.61 And you were very kindly with the intermediary there 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.18 to arrange at White Memorial, wasn't it? 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.05 White Memorial, yes. 00:02:04.09\00:02:05.42 And you came and we had a good contact as usual 00:02:05.45\00:02:10.43 and sort of talking at you, 00:02:10.46\00:02:11.86 but this is a preface to then taking it more widely. 00:02:11.89\00:02:15.53 But I attended this church on Sunday, 00:02:15.56\00:02:18.33 this mega-church pastored by John MacArthur. 00:02:18.37\00:02:23.04 I am not sympathetic to their naive view 00:02:23.07\00:02:28.14 that they don't need to wear masks 00:02:28.18\00:02:29.68 or maintain much social distance. 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.38 That's really an option, not optional, 00:02:31.41\00:02:34.98 but that's apart from the real issue at play. 00:02:35.02\00:02:37.42 The issue at play, I think, 00:02:37.45\00:02:38.85 is that in locking down elements of society, 00:02:38.89\00:02:42.52 our authorities, in most, every state were panicked. 00:02:42.56\00:02:46.86 I don't think there was much forethought 00:02:46.90\00:02:48.36 and they did not include church worship 00:02:48.40\00:02:51.23 and church operations in as necessary services. 00:02:51.27\00:02:55.30 Some things remained over 00:02:55.34\00:02:56.67 because it was like supermarkets 00:02:56.71\00:02:58.04 you have to go there, 00:02:58.07\00:03:00.31 not churches 00:03:00.34\00:03:01.74 and this church closed down like others, 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.61 but after a while, they thought, 00:03:04.65\00:03:06.01 well, we're being unduly restricted, 00:03:06.05\00:03:08.02 it might be an open-ended thing. 00:03:08.05\00:03:09.38 And so they decided to meet again 00:03:09.42\00:03:10.82 and they've met with much, much resistance, 00:03:10.85\00:03:13.59 fines and threats, 00:03:13.62\00:03:15.59 even of imprisonment. 00:03:15.62\00:03:17.16 So it was a great experience to go along 00:03:17.19\00:03:18.96 and refreshing to see people 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.56 in their thousands meeting there 00:03:21.60\00:03:23.47 and exalting in the privilege of knowing the Lord 00:03:23.50\00:03:26.47 and seeking comfort in a time of stress. 00:03:26.50\00:03:29.64 And I thought that 00:03:29.67\00:03:31.01 regardless of their legal standing, 00:03:31.04\00:03:33.51 that's a sign of people glorying in the Lord 00:03:33.54\00:03:36.28 in a time of trial. 00:03:36.31\00:03:39.01 But back to your part, it just reminded me again, 00:03:39.05\00:03:42.55 both within our church and other areas, 00:03:42.58\00:03:45.42 the opportunities that have been provided to you 00:03:45.45\00:03:47.99 to be that bridging person 00:03:48.02\00:03:50.89 and that person in the right place 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.13 at the right time, 00:03:53.16\00:03:54.60 you know, you helped me on that, 00:03:54.63\00:03:57.73 maybe it's sort of an experimental outing 00:03:57.77\00:04:00.84 to verify for my own satisfaction 00:04:00.87\00:04:02.74 that even in this time when so many Christians 00:04:02.77\00:04:05.27 and some other faiths, I'm sure, 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.64 have sort of on command gone back to their homes 00:04:07.68\00:04:10.75 and shuttered the windows and end of it. 00:04:10.78\00:04:13.72 I can't speak to their inner spiritual life, 00:04:13.75\00:04:16.05 but as far as the gathering together 00:04:16.08\00:04:19.19 that we're told to continue ceased, 00:04:19.22\00:04:23.26 and I'm glad that some people still seek 00:04:23.29\00:04:25.46 that communion with God in a public way, 00:04:25.49\00:04:28.20 but how have you found in this COVID era, 00:04:28.23\00:04:32.43 your context, and your ongoing activities? 00:04:32.47\00:04:36.87 Well, speaking of this church, White Memorial, 00:04:36.91\00:04:39.37 it is a blessing to go there. 00:04:39.41\00:04:41.14 They have it very well 00:04:41.18\00:04:42.81 within the requirements that are needed 00:04:42.84\00:04:44.18 to keep us safe. 00:04:44.21\00:04:45.55 Yes, I should have said that. 00:04:45.58\00:04:46.92 They were outside under a canopy... 00:04:46.95\00:04:48.28 We were under a canopy. With distance and so on. 00:04:48.32\00:04:49.78 We were distant, masks were on, 00:04:49.82\00:04:52.65 there were about maybe 60 people, 50, 60 people. 00:04:52.69\00:04:55.66 There was a good crowd of people. 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.16 Might have been more than that, 00:04:57.19\00:04:58.53 it was close to a hundred, yeah. 00:04:58.56\00:04:59.89 Yeah. And it was very good. 00:04:59.93\00:05:01.26 The pastor's amazing there. 00:05:01.30\00:05:02.63 And when I called and asked that you were coming, 00:05:02.66\00:05:05.43 he didn't even hesitate. 00:05:05.47\00:05:06.80 Of course, bring him, yes. 00:05:06.84\00:05:09.04 He either knows me very well or doesn't know me at all. 00:05:09.07\00:05:13.14 No, I'm sure. I talked to him. 00:05:13.17\00:05:15.24 He knows religious liberty. Yes, yes. 00:05:15.28\00:05:16.95 And I've been there visiting a couple of times, 00:05:16.98\00:05:18.88 and that's where, again, the relationship building, 00:05:18.91\00:05:21.38 not just in the elected officials offices 00:05:21.42\00:05:22.98 or in community, 00:05:23.02\00:05:24.35 but when we build relationships with our own churches, 00:05:24.39\00:05:26.25 I mean, we're one church, we're one people, 00:05:26.29\00:05:28.06 we're one church family. 00:05:28.09\00:05:29.72 We're not strangers within our own churches. 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.96 Well, and I'm bringing this up for a reason because, 00:05:31.99\00:05:35.63 you know, Liberty magazine has existed 00:05:35.66\00:05:38.20 in the Adventist Church 00:05:38.23\00:05:39.57 for well over a hundred years 00:05:39.60\00:05:40.94 and its predecessor back to the very beginnings, 00:05:40.97\00:05:44.14 toward the two-thirds of the way 00:05:44.17\00:05:46.41 through the last century, not the last, yes, the last. 00:05:46.44\00:05:49.18 Yes, the last. 00:05:49.21\00:05:52.61 But even at this late point, 00:05:52.65\00:05:54.35 it's not a forgone thing 00:05:54.38\00:05:56.58 that every Adventist pastor 00:05:56.62\00:05:58.85 is favorable to religious liberty work. 00:05:58.89\00:06:01.36 There's a great work of education 00:06:01.39\00:06:02.86 that needs to be done. 00:06:02.89\00:06:04.23 They think it's for someone else's problem 00:06:04.26\00:06:06.29 or worse and it's just a legal issue 00:06:06.33\00:06:08.20 that, which they're not concerned. 00:06:08.23\00:06:10.60 And so we have to educate them. 00:06:10.63\00:06:12.13 So to find because of your context, 00:06:12.17\00:06:14.57 a very positive reception, to me, that's gratifying. 00:06:14.60\00:06:17.51 I've met quite a few pastors, 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.07 visited quite a few of our churches, 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.28 and I've been able to be blessed by new church family. 00:06:21.31\00:06:24.78 They're amazing. 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.15 And now because of COVID, 00:06:26.18\00:06:27.52 I can't go into their churches like I used to. 00:06:27.55\00:06:29.72 And when they have a ministry program vespers, 00:06:29.75\00:06:32.42 or they have an event coming up, 00:06:32.45\00:06:34.16 I'm always there to also just show support, 00:06:34.19\00:06:36.42 hello, I'm here. 00:06:36.46\00:06:37.83 And I bring some materials, Liberty magazine, 00:06:37.86\00:06:40.00 and brochures and things to, 00:06:40.03\00:06:41.46 to hand out and just show them, 00:06:41.50\00:06:43.16 I'm here to support you because we're family, 00:06:43.20\00:06:45.67 we're a church family, 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.04 and I don't believe 00:06:47.07\00:06:48.40 we should be strangers in our own churches. 00:06:48.44\00:06:49.77 No. 00:06:49.80\00:06:51.14 But now that there's COVID, 00:06:51.17\00:06:52.51 we're very limited to how many churches are open, 00:06:52.54\00:06:54.61 but I'm still growing church families via Zoom, 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.78 via conference calls. 00:06:56.81\00:06:58.15 It's not the same, but going to White Memorial, 00:06:58.18\00:07:01.45 it was a good experience again to be out 00:07:01.48\00:07:03.59 and worshiping with people. 00:07:03.62\00:07:04.95 Yeah. 00:07:04.99\00:07:06.32 And under the tents, I mean, our pioneers did. 00:07:06.35\00:07:08.32 That's how they started out. They were under the tents. 00:07:08.36\00:07:10.83 And it wasn't just Adventist pioneers, 00:07:10.86\00:07:12.59 that was an era of the tent missions 00:07:12.63\00:07:16.10 and the a state of I think was the term they used, 00:07:16.13\00:07:18.90 basically, summer religious camps, 00:07:18.93\00:07:21.34 wait for the whole summer, 00:07:21.37\00:07:22.70 people would be camping out 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.44 and gathering in a big tent. 00:07:24.47\00:07:25.91 And it's nice and it's comfortable. 00:07:25.94\00:07:27.31 Revival sermons and so on. 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.14 That was the whole context. 00:07:29.18\00:07:30.51 There are some times I've gone to White Memorial 00:07:30.55\00:07:32.18 and under a shaded trees there on the grass area there 00:07:32.21\00:07:34.28 where people put out a blanket 00:07:34.32\00:07:35.65 and families sit down on the blanket 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.29 which is wonderful. 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.65 It's a wonderful, comfortable feeling 00:07:38.69\00:07:40.59 with singing songs and sermons, 00:07:40.62\00:07:42.09 but we're all safe and wearing masks. 00:07:42.12\00:07:43.63 Yeah. 00:07:43.66\00:07:44.99 No, it's wonderful, and I was inspired by it. 00:07:45.03\00:07:48.06 But tell me more, I know you've got stories. 00:07:48.10\00:07:51.63 Yes, I have lot of stories. 00:07:51.67\00:07:54.67 What other experiences have you been blessed 00:07:54.70\00:07:56.81 to go through as you've reached out 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.74 to legislators, community leaders, 00:07:59.77\00:08:02.68 and community groups? 00:08:02.71\00:08:04.51 Well, again, with the non-profits, 00:08:04.55\00:08:06.21 when I, I'll go back to, 00:08:06.25\00:08:07.58 I mentioned human trafficking on another show. 00:08:07.62\00:08:11.39 I met them when I received the flyer 00:08:11.42\00:08:14.02 from L.A County supervisor 00:08:14.06\00:08:15.96 and I attended the trafficking event. 00:08:15.99\00:08:20.10 I was again called 00:08:20.13\00:08:21.46 into helping the stories I heard, 00:08:21.50\00:08:23.80 you know, the labor trafficking and the other traffic. 00:08:23.83\00:08:26.84 I mean, it's the buying and selling 00:08:26.87\00:08:28.90 of women and children. 00:08:28.94\00:08:30.27 It's here in America. 00:08:30.31\00:08:31.64 It's no longer a third world country issue, 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.38 it's here. 00:08:33.41\00:08:34.74 But I met a community leader who also lives in my city 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.95 who started sponsoring his own programs and events. 00:08:37.98\00:08:40.65 So I partnered with him and I learned through him. 00:08:40.68\00:08:43.49 That's how I started meeting other nonprofits 00:08:43.52\00:08:46.69 that are all out to help each other. 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.22 And it really is a close, it's a small world as they say, 00:08:48.26\00:08:50.86 not to use that cliche, but it is a small world. 00:08:50.89\00:08:53.26 People that are out there 00:08:53.29\00:08:54.63 doing what's good and what's right. 00:08:54.66\00:08:56.53 And when they see that you're there consistently, 00:08:56.56\00:08:58.50 and that's the key, consistently show up. 00:08:58.53\00:09:01.80 You start building those relationships. 00:09:01.84\00:09:03.77 I met a woman there who was a survivor 00:09:03.81\00:09:06.27 of being trafficked herself. 00:09:06.31\00:09:08.44 She's the one that had legislative ideas 00:09:08.48\00:09:11.11 to help stop 00:09:11.15\00:09:12.48 some of the perpetrators and the... 00:09:12.51\00:09:15.55 I guess for want of a better term, 00:09:15.58\00:09:16.92 but the purchasers of these women and children. 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.36 And because of her, 00:09:20.39\00:09:21.82 when I showed her what I did and gave her the NARLA card 00:09:21.86\00:09:24.26 and said, we build 00:09:24.29\00:09:25.63 relationships with elected officials. 00:09:25.66\00:09:27.40 She reached out to me, she says, 00:09:27.43\00:09:28.76 "Patty, can you help me with this legislature? 00:09:28.80\00:09:30.20 Do you think we can meet with someone in government 00:09:30.23\00:09:33.23 we can present these ideas to?" 00:09:33.27\00:09:35.30 I said, "Of course." 00:09:35.34\00:09:36.67 And again, it was the Congresswoman. 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.14 And, we did have an appointment for her, 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.81 with her legislative policy director, 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.68 myself, 00:09:44.71\00:09:46.05 the woman who was the ex survivor 00:09:46.08\00:09:47.65 we met in the office, 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.42 then her policy director says, 00:09:49.45\00:09:51.35 "You know, Congresswoman has a heart for this. 00:09:51.39\00:09:53.99 She wants to do something. 00:09:54.02\00:09:55.99 Would you be willing to sit face to face with her 00:09:56.02\00:09:58.06 at a table, round table discussion?" 00:09:58.09\00:10:01.20 Yes, of course. I'm thinking, really God. 00:10:01.23\00:10:03.37 I mean, that's more than I could have asked for, 00:10:03.40\00:10:04.77 again, more than I could have asked for. 00:10:04.80\00:10:07.27 And this woman who now runs 00:10:07.30\00:10:09.67 a nonprofit sheltering victims of human trafficking, 00:10:09.70\00:10:14.54 bringing them to being survivors. 00:10:14.58\00:10:17.25 She says, Pati really? And I go, we said, yes. 00:10:17.28\00:10:19.68 Less than a month later, 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.05 we had a round table with the Congresswoman 00:10:21.08\00:10:23.45 discussing these legislative ideas. 00:10:23.49\00:10:24.89 This trafficking thing you be on the inside of 00:10:24.92\00:10:28.06 is a primarily people 00:10:28.09\00:10:30.23 that are brought into the country 00:10:30.26\00:10:32.79 by sponsors that, 00:10:32.83\00:10:34.46 hold it over them 00:10:34.50\00:10:35.83 as they're in indenture basically 00:10:35.86\00:10:38.20 or is it Americans 00:10:38.23\00:10:40.57 that one way or another held hostage and traded? 00:10:40.60\00:10:45.47 In the labor trafficking, 00:10:45.51\00:10:47.14 we've discovered that there are people 00:10:47.18\00:10:48.78 coming from other countries. 00:10:48.81\00:10:50.51 And when they are here, 00:10:50.55\00:10:51.88 when they arrive either in the way 00:10:51.91\00:10:53.25 of containers or on boats. 00:10:53.28\00:10:55.25 I know of, this is why I'm beating on it. 00:10:55.28\00:10:57.02 Yes, they do come in that way, and what the perpetrators do. 00:10:57.05\00:11:00.19 And they never really allowed 00:11:00.22\00:11:01.56 to pay off their fees to bring them in. 00:11:01.59\00:11:03.43 Exactly. 00:11:03.46\00:11:04.79 And then the perpetrators also greet them and meet them. 00:11:04.83\00:11:07.56 And they pretend like they're their best friend. 00:11:07.60\00:11:09.66 We're going to help you. 00:11:09.70\00:11:11.03 We'll get you a job, 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.40 but we need to see your paperwork. 00:11:12.43\00:11:13.77 And if they do have... And they take it. 00:11:13.80\00:11:15.14 Exactly, if they do have paperwork, 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.14 they hold on to that paperwork. 00:11:17.17\00:11:18.81 They are in the hospitality roles, 00:11:18.84\00:11:20.94 in our hotels and wealthy people's homes, 00:11:20.98\00:11:24.48 on the fishing boats 00:11:24.51\00:11:26.01 that we have out of our harbors, 00:11:26.05\00:11:28.32 they're really everywhere. 00:11:28.35\00:11:29.92 And then the other, the sex trafficking, sadly, 00:11:29.95\00:11:33.69 there's a lot of parents who are on drugs. 00:11:33.72\00:11:36.52 The perpetrators know how to choose these people 00:11:36.56\00:11:39.49 that have children or teenage girls. 00:11:39.53\00:11:42.60 And they say, you know, for money, 00:11:42.63\00:11:44.83 I don't want to go into details, 00:11:44.87\00:11:46.43 but you could imagine the hovers of what, 00:11:46.47\00:11:48.24 happened because a mother, a single mother who's on drugs. 00:11:48.27\00:11:52.41 She's enticed by the money and says, here's my... 00:11:52.44\00:11:56.38 Well, just a few days ago, 00:11:56.41\00:11:57.75 I was watching a program 00:11:57.78\00:11:59.11 about an FBI sting program against drug dealers. 00:11:59.15\00:12:02.02 And the FBI agent said he was amazed 00:12:02.05\00:12:05.02 because he was portraying himself 00:12:05.05\00:12:06.69 as the drug dealer. 00:12:06.72\00:12:08.06 This woman couldn't come up 00:12:08.09\00:12:09.42 with the money for the trade deal. 00:12:09.46\00:12:11.13 It was a big deal. 00:12:11.16\00:12:12.49 She offered her infant child. Yes. 00:12:12.53\00:12:14.10 She would give the child. 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.00 And he says, what sort of a person, 00:12:16.03\00:12:18.37 what sort of a situation they would give away a child? 00:12:18.40\00:12:21.54 And we've seen it firsthand. 00:12:21.57\00:12:22.90 It was a group, an interfaith group. 00:12:22.94\00:12:24.37 We would go out on a Friday night. 00:12:24.41\00:12:25.74 We know an area in a city. 00:12:25.77\00:12:27.28 I won't say the city. 00:12:27.31\00:12:28.88 There's a motel that's used, doesn't, 00:12:28.91\00:12:30.85 the name of the motel is even, sign isn't even outside. 00:12:30.88\00:12:34.32 And there's an alleyway. 00:12:34.35\00:12:36.02 And we go out there during the times 00:12:36.05\00:12:37.39 that we know the perpetrators will be there 00:12:37.42\00:12:38.95 and purchasers are there looking for what you sells. 00:12:38.99\00:12:42.72 It's a wicked world. It's horrible. 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.09 But it's worth remembering 00:12:44.13\00:12:45.46 not to over-exaggerate you know America, 00:12:45.49\00:12:50.10 it's a wonderful country by and large, 00:12:50.13\00:12:52.23 but it's not, you know, we are great. 00:12:52.27\00:12:54.57 And the rest of the world is horrible. 00:12:54.60\00:12:55.94 It's here. It's here. 00:12:55.97\00:12:57.31 And there are deep and deadly problems 00:12:57.34\00:12:58.67 that need to be addressed. 00:12:58.71\00:13:00.04 Stay with us. 00:13:00.08\00:13:01.41 We'll be back after a short break 00:13:01.44\00:13:02.78 to continue this discussion with Pati. 00:13:02.81\00:13:04.71
