Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.62\00:00:29.66 This is your program designed to bring you up to speed 00:00:29.69\00:00:32.73 and involve you in some of the events, 00:00:32.76\00:00:35.40 developments, and underlying issues 00:00:35.43\00:00:37.90 relating to religious liberty. 00:00:37.93\00:00:39.70 Of course, in United States, but around the world also. 00:00:39.73\00:00:43.61 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:43.64\00:00:47.11 and my guest on this program, Pati Lawrence. 00:00:47.14\00:00:50.48 You're a, what I would characterize 00:00:50.51\00:00:52.41 as an advocate for religious liberty 00:00:52.45\00:00:55.72 and even an activist. 00:00:55.75\00:00:57.09 Yes. 00:00:57.12\00:00:58.45 You're a Seventh-day Adventist lay person, lay woman. 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.59 And you've taken the challenge and God has rewarded 00:01:01.62\00:01:06.86 you mightily with some incredible stories. 00:01:06.90\00:01:09.93 And that's really what I want to get out of you. 00:01:09.96\00:01:11.67 And the best way to lead 00:01:11.70\00:01:13.03 into this is something that's current, 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.14 not quite knowing when this will be broadcast, 00:01:15.17\00:01:17.54 but of recent days, 00:01:17.57\00:01:19.87 the United States was quite shocked 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.48 when Justice Ginsburg, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. 00:01:21.51\00:01:27.08 I was trying to think of her initials. 00:01:27.12\00:01:29.82 A legendary figure. 00:01:29.85\00:01:31.19 In fact, in one of my other programs, 00:01:31.22\00:01:33.19 I mentioned on a plane to Australia, 00:01:33.22\00:01:34.92 watching the movie made of her life story. 00:01:34.96\00:01:37.39 Very dramatic. 00:01:37.43\00:01:38.76 And at the same time, there was a full documentary, 00:01:38.79\00:01:40.43 all within months of her passing. 00:01:40.46\00:01:43.70 She was a woman of some accomplishments. 00:01:43.73\00:01:48.90 And a few months ago, or about a year ago, 00:01:48.94\00:01:53.17 we decided that we wanted to get through to her 00:01:53.21\00:01:55.44 and hope that she could respond 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.21 to an invitation to speak at our Liberty dinner. 00:01:57.25\00:02:01.05 Now it turns out that she was going through 00:02:01.08\00:02:03.32 another bout of illness and so on, 00:02:03.35\00:02:04.89 but you've filled an incredible role 00:02:04.92\00:02:08.12 in making a contact with her office. 00:02:08.16\00:02:09.76 Didn't you? Tell me how that worked? 00:02:09.79\00:02:11.66 And again, God is good. 00:02:11.69\00:02:13.03 It's God opening the doors. 00:02:13.06\00:02:15.43 After you and I spoke about inviting her. 00:02:15.46\00:02:18.33 I contacted my contacts and I love to say this, 00:02:18.37\00:02:21.44 my contacts at a congressional, at a Congresswoman's office. 00:02:21.47\00:02:25.54 And I said to him, I told him what we wanted and he says, 00:02:25.57\00:02:28.84 "Sure, I can help you out. 00:02:28.88\00:02:30.21 We can reach out directly." 00:02:30.25\00:02:31.58 This was the Congresswoman's district director. 00:02:31.61\00:02:34.02 He says, "Do you have a letter?" 00:02:34.05\00:02:35.58 I remember contacting you, do we have an official letter? 00:02:35.62\00:02:37.85 You sent it right over, sent it to him. 00:02:37.89\00:02:40.96 He made phone calls to her office 00:02:40.99\00:02:42.82 and he provided me with an address. 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.46 And he said, this will get directly to her. 00:02:45.49\00:02:47.73 I mean, there's addresses you can find 00:02:47.76\00:02:49.10 to write are Supreme Court 00:02:49.13\00:02:51.03 and a lot of people online, 00:02:51.07\00:02:52.63 but this was a different address. 00:02:52.67\00:02:54.07 This is an address that led directly to, 00:02:54.10\00:02:56.47 she would receive this in her hands. 00:02:56.50\00:02:57.84 Yeah. Of course, her staff. 00:02:57.87\00:02:59.21 I remember I tried to hand deliver it 00:02:59.24\00:03:00.71 and got into a lot of trouble. 00:03:00.74\00:03:02.08 The security's tight. 00:03:02.11\00:03:03.65 And I had to hand it to a security officer 00:03:03.68\00:03:06.05 and I was worried, but he says, "It will get to her. 00:03:06.08\00:03:08.65 Don't you worry." 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.02 Yes. 00:03:10.05\00:03:11.65 And it was a letter from the Congresswoman. 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.82 Yes. So I was excited about it. 00:03:13.86\00:03:17.53 We made that contact. 00:03:17.56\00:03:18.89 I believe I sent one out priority overnight 00:03:18.93\00:03:22.56 and then prayed. 00:03:22.60\00:03:23.93 And I remember you contacted me and you said, 00:03:23.97\00:03:26.23 "You did receive a reply back." 00:03:26.27\00:03:28.50 Yes. You did. So that was exciting. 00:03:28.54\00:03:30.11 I mean, it wasn't the success, but the success here. 00:03:30.14\00:03:32.84 I mean, we didn't get her, 00:03:32.87\00:03:34.41 but the success was there's a mechanism 00:03:34.44\00:03:36.28 and the contacts were working. 00:03:36.31\00:03:38.35 They were working. 00:03:38.38\00:03:39.71 And this is after the same Congresswoman, 00:03:39.75\00:03:42.65 her district director called me one day 00:03:42.68\00:03:44.19 and he's asking me for favor. 00:03:44.22\00:03:45.79 So it kind of goes back and forth. 00:03:45.82\00:03:47.82 It really does in. 00:03:47.86\00:03:49.19 When you have that relationship, 00:03:49.22\00:03:50.56 it's comfortable to call up and say, 00:03:50.59\00:03:52.43 "Hey, hello, I need this." 00:03:52.46\00:03:54.00 It becomes that comfortable. 00:03:54.03\00:03:55.66 It really does, informal emails back and forth, phone calls. 00:03:55.70\00:03:59.47 Or I just, now I get to the point 00:03:59.50\00:04:01.27 where many of the, and this is members of Congress 00:04:01.30\00:04:04.37 that I have developed relationships 00:04:04.41\00:04:05.74 with throughout Southern California, 00:04:05.77\00:04:07.98 because they're busy also. 00:04:08.01\00:04:09.34 And they know I'm gonna show up every Wednesday. 00:04:09.38\00:04:10.81 They say, "Pati, you don't have to call for us, 00:04:10.85\00:04:12.18 just come on it." 00:04:12.21\00:04:13.55 If we're there, you can come back say hello, 00:04:13.58\00:04:15.02 drop off because they know 00:04:15.05\00:04:16.38 I'm going to give them something. 00:04:16.42\00:04:18.02 So it gets to the point 00:04:18.05\00:04:19.39 where I can just walk in to their offices. 00:04:19.42\00:04:23.43 So he called me, the district director 00:04:23.46\00:04:24.89 for this particular Congresswoman. 00:04:24.93\00:04:26.26 And he says, normally they scout for venues 00:04:26.29\00:04:29.60 when they're going to have a town hall or a big event 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.77 or, they scout. 00:04:31.80\00:04:33.40 But he says to me, "Pati, 00:04:33.44\00:04:34.77 Congresswoman wants to use one of your churches, 00:04:34.80\00:04:37.21 wants to use one of our churches." 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.51 So I reach out to Dennis 00:04:39.54\00:04:41.14 and to our vice president of our Southern Conference 00:04:41.18\00:04:44.28 who jumped on it right away, 00:04:44.31\00:04:46.82 recommended the church, contacted the pastor. 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.32 We're good. Yes, we will do this. 00:04:49.35\00:04:50.69 And I said, "Well, Congresswoman is thinking big. 00:04:50.72\00:04:53.25 She wants a venue. 00:04:53.29\00:04:54.62 One of our churches 00:04:54.66\00:04:55.99 that would hold 200, 300 people. 00:04:56.02\00:04:57.39 Okay. No problem. 00:04:57.43\00:04:58.76 But they gave me a church that held occupancy of 1,000 people. 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.56 Okay. But that'll work. 00:05:02.60\00:05:04.90 A day of the... 00:05:04.93\00:05:06.30 Although I've had enough meetings 00:05:06.33\00:05:07.94 to know that you really want to fill. 00:05:07.97\00:05:11.01 If you've got a 100 people, 00:05:11.04\00:05:12.37 it's better to have a meeting room 00:05:12.41\00:05:13.74 that holds a hundred 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.11 and it looks full than to rattle around, 00:05:15.14\00:05:16.75 a 100 people rattling around. 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.11 It looks like it's a poorly attended meeting. 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.28 But obviously God's hand was in this. 00:05:20.32\00:05:21.82 Yes, I know. 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.18 God's hand, because we had no idea. 00:05:23.22\00:05:26.09 Yeah. 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.46 So the evening of the town hall, 00:05:27.49\00:05:29.99 I pull up, I have so many pictures. 00:05:30.03\00:05:32.06 Every news truck was there. There was ABC. 00:05:32.09\00:05:35.66 This is California, channel seven, 00:05:35.70\00:05:37.43 channel nine, channel two, channel five. 00:05:37.47\00:05:39.37 Even the Spanish news channel 00:05:39.40\00:05:41.04 was out there all around our church. 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.44 It's lit up, and I'm thinking what? 00:05:43.47\00:05:45.84 This is our church. I go in. 00:05:45.87\00:05:47.84 It is quickly filling up. 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.61 I spot the Congresswoman. 00:05:49.64\00:05:51.11 I go, we're at the very front seat. 00:05:51.15\00:05:52.91 She sets up her podium. 00:05:52.95\00:05:54.95 There's also a table because she has city officials, 00:05:54.98\00:05:59.09 city management there from the city. 00:05:59.12\00:06:01.69 And I see the Congresswoman. 00:06:01.72\00:06:03.39 She sees me, we greet each other. 00:06:03.43\00:06:05.19 She says, "Pati, I just want to tell you. 00:06:05.23\00:06:06.90 Thank you for letting us use your church." 00:06:06.93\00:06:09.20 I mentioned to her district director. 00:06:09.23\00:06:11.60 She said, I mentioned to him, 00:06:11.63\00:06:12.97 "You'll find me a neutral place." 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.84 First she says without hesitation. 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.71 He says, "Pati Lawrence, they're neutral." 00:06:16.74\00:06:20.04 And that's important for them to know. 00:06:20.08\00:06:22.18 Not neutral on religious liberty, 00:06:22.21\00:06:23.55 but neutral politically. 00:06:23.58\00:06:24.91 We're not a political action group 00:06:24.95\00:06:27.78 for any party or pressure group. 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.59 No. 00:06:30.62\00:06:31.95 And they know what we stand for 00:06:31.99\00:06:33.69 from the very beginning of our meetings 00:06:33.72\00:06:35.36 that we have with them. 00:06:35.39\00:06:36.99 And she says, "You know, I was thinking big. 00:06:37.03\00:06:38.76 I needed a venue, 200, 300 people." 00:06:38.79\00:06:41.23 And I say, "Congresswoman, 00:06:41.26\00:06:43.10 this venue, this church holds a thousand people and look, 00:06:43.13\00:06:46.17 there's standing room only. 00:06:46.20\00:06:47.80 Her eyes were so big. I reversed my shoes. 00:06:47.84\00:06:50.61 I know, I know, we're looking around. 00:06:50.64\00:06:54.01 It was so exciting 00:06:54.04\00:06:55.44 and these are people from the community. 00:06:55.48\00:06:57.98 Now what better free marketing can we get than... 00:06:58.01\00:06:59.85 Yeah. 00:06:59.88\00:07:01.22 How many times can we have a thousand people 00:07:01.25\00:07:02.82 from the community to come in without us 00:07:02.85\00:07:04.82 sending out one flyer or one bulletin? 00:07:04.85\00:07:07.29 Now tell me, I've heard your story 00:07:07.32\00:07:09.52 of what happened during that meeting. 00:07:09.56\00:07:11.36 There was some interesting exchanges. 00:07:11.39\00:07:13.19 Yes. It was not a happy crowd. 00:07:13.23\00:07:18.23 The issue, it's normally a city issue. 00:07:18.27\00:07:22.04 I think I can mention 00:07:22.07\00:07:23.41 it was about potholes in the city. 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.54 I know, it sounds, it is laughable but... 00:07:25.57\00:07:27.94 Well, not really. But not really. 00:07:27.98\00:07:29.38 Not for this city. 00:07:29.41\00:07:30.75 I guess it's my program, indulge me, 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.65 I've got a book called ''Parkinson's Law." 00:07:32.68\00:07:36.69 It's a humorous book, but with scientific basis 00:07:36.72\00:07:39.59 and one of them is called 00:07:39.62\00:07:40.96 the point of vanishing interest. 00:07:40.99\00:07:42.76 And it says, how this committee meeting 00:07:42.79\00:07:44.96 to discuss the nuclear power plant. 00:07:44.99\00:07:47.30 And it's, you know, 00:07:47.33\00:07:49.00 so many billion dollars and so many cents. 00:07:49.03\00:07:51.93 And it says, nobody asked how come that odd number. 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.74 And it says, nobody on the committee 00:07:54.77\00:07:56.10 knows anything about nuclear power plants. 00:07:56.14\00:07:57.77 So they voted in a moment. 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.04 Then they get down to, you know, 00:08:00.08\00:08:02.31 building some roads in that 00:08:02.34\00:08:03.68 with a bit of discussion because people understand roads 00:08:03.71\00:08:05.75 to some degree voted after 10, 15 minutes. 00:08:05.78\00:08:08.25 Finally, bicycle shared for the employees. 00:08:08.28\00:08:10.29 Everybody knows about it. 00:08:10.32\00:08:13.15 So potholes guaranteed interest. 00:08:13.19\00:08:15.92 Everybody has opinions on potholes. 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.83 So it would be expected that 00:08:18.86\00:08:20.20 it would be a very contentious thing 00:08:20.23\00:08:22.30 where to proportion to the monetary 00:08:22.33\00:08:25.67 and social effect of it. 00:08:25.70\00:08:27.57 Well, in this town in particular, 00:08:27.60\00:08:29.20 I've driven through this town. 00:08:29.24\00:08:30.57 There's, we're not just talking a little bump in the road. 00:08:30.61\00:08:33.81 There are huge potholes everywhere and deep. 00:08:33.84\00:08:37.41 I mean and the reason that the Congresswoman... 00:08:37.45\00:08:39.51 I've read articles, these potholes 00:08:39.55\00:08:40.88 that have swallowed cars up. 00:08:40.92\00:08:42.25 Yes. 00:08:42.28\00:08:43.62 This is bad, almost on every block. 00:08:43.65\00:08:45.45 The reason Congress on being federal 00:08:45.49\00:08:49.02 took a stand now for this 00:08:49.06\00:08:50.73 is because she's also on a health committee. 00:08:50.76\00:08:54.16 And when 9/11 is called, 00:08:54.20\00:08:56.56 when paramedics are needed out in an emergency, 00:08:56.60\00:08:59.57 they're delayed, they have to slow down. 00:08:59.60\00:09:01.90 They have to take different routes. 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.27 They're going around the block. 00:09:03.30\00:09:04.91 Now this person's health is in jeopardy. 00:09:04.94\00:09:06.64 They need to be there immediately 00:09:06.68\00:09:08.31 and it's taking them minutes longer to get there. 00:09:08.34\00:09:12.25 So now she stepped up 00:09:12.28\00:09:13.68 and she's an amazing Congresswoman. 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.28 She stepped up. 00:09:15.32\00:09:16.89 So this is going on 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.25 and it's not a friendly conversation 00:09:18.29\00:09:19.95 you can imagine. 00:09:19.99\00:09:21.32 The audience, they're tired of years 00:09:21.36\00:09:23.22 and years and years of promises. 00:09:23.26\00:09:25.09 They're tired of hearing money's been allocated, 00:09:25.13\00:09:27.40 but nothing's been done. 00:09:27.43\00:09:28.96 That's why city management was there. 00:09:29.00\00:09:30.57 I believe even the mayor of the city 00:09:30.60\00:09:32.33 was there in the front view. 00:09:32.37\00:09:33.94 I was towards the front. 00:09:33.97\00:09:37.71 A gentleman gets up. 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.24 I have the picture also. 00:09:39.27\00:09:40.74 I wish I could have shared some pictures. 00:09:40.78\00:09:42.31 Very tall, angry, loud gentlemen. 00:09:42.34\00:09:46.51 Now Congresswoman is at the podium 00:09:46.55\00:09:48.22 and I don't see her bodyguard anywhere around. 00:09:48.25\00:09:52.25 Her secret service 00:09:52.29\00:09:53.62 or security person anywhere around. 00:09:53.66\00:09:54.99 Maybe he had stepped away to restroom, I don't know. 00:09:55.02\00:09:57.83 He starts inciting the crowd to a riot. 00:09:57.86\00:10:00.66 He starts saying, "Come on, are we going to stand for this?
