Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the break with guest Pati Lawrence, 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.03 we were going through your life journey. 00:00:06.07\00:00:08.94 Yes. 00:00:08.97\00:00:12.31 Looking back on it, you clearly see 00:00:12.34\00:00:14.48 God's leading in your journey, don't you? 00:00:14.51\00:00:17.05 I do, when I didn't think God was there, 00:00:17.08\00:00:18.68 He was always there. 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.32 And also, when I started with the Maharishi, 00:00:20.35\00:00:23.65 with the Hare Krishnas, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, 00:00:23.69\00:00:26.22 He didn't let me get so deep in that I got lost in it. 00:00:26.25\00:00:30.03 There was always this pull back, 00:00:30.06\00:00:31.39 there was always something. 00:00:31.43\00:00:32.89 Now back then I would say, "Oh, my conscience tell me." 00:00:32.93\00:00:35.53 Now I know it was the Holy Spirit leading me. 00:00:35.56\00:00:37.87 But I didn't know that then. 00:00:37.90\00:00:39.83 But I became so familiar with so many good people. 00:00:39.87\00:00:42.97 So I don't want to say anything critical about any of it 00:00:43.00\00:00:46.14 because there's really some good loving people. 00:00:46.17\00:00:48.68 I believe they may be lost, 00:00:48.71\00:00:50.21 they may be still searching for something possibly. 00:00:50.25\00:00:54.12 Ellen White wrote once that 00:00:54.15\00:00:56.05 people are looking wistfully to heaven. 00:00:56.08\00:00:58.45 Yes, and I was. 00:00:58.49\00:01:00.16 And that's the best reason to seek God. 00:01:00.19\00:01:05.29 And the Bible says, you know, 00:01:05.33\00:01:06.66 "You seek Him with all your heart 00:01:06.70\00:01:08.03 and you will find Him." 00:01:08.06\00:01:09.40 And yeah, He found me, I found Him. 00:01:09.43\00:01:10.83 And remember what Jesus said, 00:01:10.87\00:01:12.20 "Other sheep have I not of this pasture." 00:01:12.23\00:01:14.30 So we can't really be doctrinaire and rejecting 00:01:14.34\00:01:18.01 someone because they haven't seen things 00:01:18.04\00:01:20.31 the way we have. 00:01:20.34\00:01:22.61 And I think in a way that 00:01:22.64\00:01:23.98 suits you very well for religious liberty 00:01:24.01\00:01:26.68 and public affairs 00:01:26.72\00:01:28.25 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:28.28\00:01:29.62 which is not quite the same. 00:01:29.65\00:01:30.99 Public affairs is projecting our church 00:01:31.02\00:01:34.49 and its operation in a positive way 00:01:34.52\00:01:37.36 to the community. 00:01:37.39\00:01:38.96 And it's also welcoming 00:01:38.99\00:01:40.73 and being friendly with everyone, 00:01:40.76\00:01:42.10 mingling with everyone. 00:01:42.13\00:01:44.23 When I did leave, and now I was, 00:01:44.27\00:01:47.44 I embraced Islam, I called it 00:01:47.47\00:01:49.07 or became a Muslim for quite a few years. 00:01:49.10\00:01:51.44 So the two faiths that I held dear in my heart 00:01:51.47\00:01:54.58 for the longest, 00:01:54.61\00:01:55.94 first Adventism and then becoming a Muslim, 00:01:55.98\00:01:59.61 because the others I dabbled in, 00:01:59.65\00:02:01.08 I can't say I joined, Muslim I did, I did join. 00:02:01.12\00:02:04.72 But they were beautiful, wonderful families that I met, 00:02:04.75\00:02:07.06 very caring. 00:02:07.09\00:02:08.72 I saw the struggles after 9/11 00:02:08.76\00:02:10.46 and what they were going through. 00:02:10.49\00:02:11.83 I saw the hardships and the tears 00:02:11.86\00:02:13.73 and how the children would criticize the parents 00:02:13.76\00:02:16.56 for holding on and dressing in the garb. 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.27 And they didn't want that, they wanted to blend in 00:02:19.30\00:02:22.37 with modern society, so it's heartbreaking. 00:02:22.40\00:02:24.61 And, of course, you were dealing 00:02:24.64\00:02:25.97 with more than just faith system. 00:02:26.01\00:02:27.48 There's cultural dislocation. Exactly, exactly. 00:02:27.51\00:02:30.15 You know, I know a little bit about, 00:02:30.18\00:02:31.58 Australia is very close to the US. 00:02:31.61\00:02:33.42 But even there, 00:02:33.45\00:02:34.78 there are more bumps in the road 00:02:34.82\00:02:37.82 than you might realize in trying to acclimatized 00:02:37.85\00:02:40.86 to a different culture, different attitudes. 00:02:40.89\00:02:43.16 Then in about 19, not 19, about 2008, 00:02:43.19\00:02:47.53 I came back strongly to Adventism. 00:02:47.56\00:02:50.37 It was such a coming back. What happened? 00:02:50.40\00:02:51.97 What triggered that? 00:02:52.00\00:02:54.07 You know, I really don't know I could, 00:02:54.10\00:02:56.34 all along, I kept still in the back of my mind 00:02:56.37\00:02:59.44 or in my heart, 00:02:59.47\00:03:00.81 I felt a pull back to Adventism. 00:03:00.84\00:03:02.98 I think I was being stubborn. 00:03:03.01\00:03:05.21 I didn't just let go. 00:03:05.25\00:03:06.95 I didn't then just say to God, 00:03:06.98\00:03:10.42 "Just, let me just, where do you want me? 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.49 Where do you want me to be?" 00:03:12.52\00:03:13.86 Why am I, I'm studying Islam, I became, I'm Muslim. 00:03:13.89\00:03:19.39 I'm with beautiful people, beautiful families, 00:03:19.43\00:03:21.36 but yet, I don't feel fully in, I still felt a pull back. 00:03:21.40\00:03:26.63 And I think it's that surrendering, 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.64 or that being obedient to God that we hear a lot about. 00:03:28.67\00:03:31.74 I finally just relaxed 00:03:31.77\00:03:33.68 and He brought me back into Adventism. 00:03:33.71\00:03:37.55 And I know I will never leave. 00:03:37.58\00:03:40.02 This is my home, but I've also learned that 00:03:40.05\00:03:43.22 what I have learned through my journey 00:03:43.25\00:03:44.85 of these different faiths, I still hold dear to me 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.66 when I am out doing the public affairs, 00:03:47.69\00:03:50.46 the religious liberty. 00:03:50.49\00:03:52.09 When I hear of someone's pain 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.20 because of Muslim or atheist 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.06 or Jehovah Witness, I understand I just have this. 00:03:56.10\00:04:00.44 I can't explain it, 00:04:00.47\00:04:01.80 but my heart goes out to them and I feel for them. 00:04:01.84\00:04:03.17 I have empathy. 00:04:03.20\00:04:04.54 An empathy because you have traveled that road. 00:04:04.57\00:04:05.94 And I know there are good people, 00:04:05.97\00:04:07.38 not everyone's a good person, 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.74 but I look at them as a good person 00:04:08.78\00:04:10.45 for as long they think they are. 00:04:10.48\00:04:11.81 And even the ones that aren't could be. 00:04:11.85\00:04:13.18 It could be, they could 00:04:13.21\00:04:14.55 or prove me wrong if you're not, 00:04:14.58\00:04:15.92 but I see them as good people with a struggle. 00:04:15.95\00:04:18.85 And what you're saying too about your own struggles. 00:04:18.89\00:04:21.09 You know, remember Paul, Christ said to him, you know, 00:04:21.12\00:04:24.26 "Paul, why are you kicking against the pricks, 00:04:24.29\00:04:26.80 but you're resisting where I'm trying to take you?" 00:04:26.83\00:04:29.43 Exactly, exactly. And so it helped me. 00:04:29.46\00:04:32.63 I feel stronger being out in the public 00:04:32.67\00:04:35.07 and mingling with people, 00:04:35.10\00:04:36.54 because I don't judge anyone first by their faith 00:04:36.57\00:04:39.31 or their belief or their non belief. 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.11 I see them as we're one human family. 00:04:41.14\00:04:44.98 We're all, God created us all. 00:04:45.01\00:04:47.52 And that's how I see and I love everyone that way. 00:04:47.55\00:04:50.82 Now as I introduced you at the beginning, 00:04:50.85\00:04:53.59 you're a Religious Liberty Advocate activist. 00:04:53.62\00:04:56.89 Yes. What got you started in that? 00:04:56.93\00:05:00.30 Well, you know, I'd always now look, 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.56 I was always praying for something 00:05:02.60\00:05:03.97 from 10 years old praying, who do I worship? 00:05:04.00\00:05:05.73 What do I worship? 00:05:05.77\00:05:07.10 Well, now, I knew my Creator God, 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.10 I'd surrendered, I've given my life to Him, 00:05:09.14\00:05:12.07 not as an activity. 00:05:12.11\00:05:13.44 This is a life experience. So now I'm ready. 00:05:13.48\00:05:15.84 And I'm saying, "God, what is Your purpose for me?" 00:05:15.88\00:05:18.11 And I tried many ministries in the church. 00:05:18.15\00:05:19.91 I tried our health ministry, I tried women's ministry. 00:05:19.95\00:05:22.48 I tried. 00:05:22.52\00:05:23.85 When my daughter was growing up, 00:05:23.89\00:05:25.22 adventurers I thought, 00:05:25.25\00:05:26.59 well, maybe I'll, you know, be a Pathfinder leader someday. 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.22 Nothing. Again, nothing stuck with me. 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.59 Here I am on another journey trying to find 00:05:31.63\00:05:34.00 what is your purpose for me, God, what is it? 00:05:34.03\00:05:36.80 And obviously other people 00:05:36.83\00:05:38.17 might find those very fulfilling. 00:05:38.20\00:05:39.53 Yes. 00:05:39.57\00:05:40.90 And for me, it just didn't work. 00:05:40.94\00:05:42.27 It wasn't my niche. 00:05:42.30\00:05:43.64 Not your calling, not your spiritual gift. 00:05:43.67\00:05:46.91 It just, nothing. 00:05:46.94\00:05:48.54 It just didn't catch me, I guess. 00:05:48.58\00:05:50.71 Yeah, it didn't touch me. So what happened? 00:05:50.75\00:05:52.31 Then you read Liberty Magazine. 00:05:52.35\00:05:54.92 That's a good one. I do promote it. 00:05:54.95\00:05:57.82 I do promote it strongly. 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.16 One day in my church bulletin, there was a flyer and it said, 00:06:00.19\00:06:02.52 "Religious Liberty rally." 00:06:02.56\00:06:04.43 And I thought, I wonder what that's about. 00:06:04.46\00:06:05.99 I had no idea. September 9, 2017. 00:06:06.03\00:06:10.37 And I was determined to go, if I had to walk there alone, 00:06:10.40\00:06:13.97 I had to go, I had to go, whatever the cost. 00:06:14.00\00:06:17.44 I went, it was in Los Angeles about an hour or so away. 00:06:17.47\00:06:21.44 I didn't stay very long. 00:06:21.48\00:06:22.88 But I did have the opportunity 00:06:22.91\00:06:24.91 to listen to Dwayne Leslie speak. 00:06:24.95\00:06:28.18 And I was holding on to every word he said. 00:06:28.22\00:06:31.45 He was speaking about statistics around the world 00:06:31.49\00:06:33.89 and the horrors of what is happening 00:06:33.92\00:06:36.02 in other countries. 00:06:36.06\00:06:37.66 When I left that day, I left with a compelling. 00:06:37.69\00:06:41.36 I don't know how to explain it, 00:06:41.40\00:06:42.90 but a sense of urgency of, okay something has to be done. 00:06:42.93\00:06:45.40 I need to do something. 00:06:45.43\00:06:46.80 And I knew, I said, "God, this is the calling." 00:06:46.84\00:06:50.81 So that following week, it was that moment 00:06:50.84\00:06:54.44 where there was no doubt in my mind. 00:06:54.48\00:06:56.41 That was three years ago, little about three years ago, 00:06:56.44\00:06:59.31 so I get home and I thought 00:06:59.35\00:07:00.82 how do I reach Dwayne Leslie General Conference? 00:07:00.85\00:07:04.35 How am I gonna reach him? He's probably so busy. 00:07:04.39\00:07:07.99 There's probably, I couldn't probably 00:07:08.02\00:07:09.36 get a phone number and email. 00:07:09.39\00:07:11.19 But I did, I was able to find and I believe it was, 00:07:11.23\00:07:14.33 I'm not gonna say accident, providence. 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.63 I called the number. 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.53 And I don't know how, now I can't remember 00:07:18.57\00:07:19.97 how I found that number. 00:07:20.00\00:07:21.34 I googled, I was googling everything. 00:07:21.37\00:07:23.07 But it was to his assistant at the time. 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.57 And I sent her an email, 00:07:25.61\00:07:27.08 she forwarded my email to Dwayne Leslie, 00:07:27.11\00:07:29.24 this is how quickly this worked. 00:07:29.28\00:07:31.08 Okay, this is God. 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.45 And this is also the seriousness of our leaders 00:07:32.48\00:07:35.38 and how much I appreciate that they will listen 00:07:35.42\00:07:38.25 to someone they don't even know me. 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.82 Someone they don't even know. That's what we're paid for. 00:07:40.86\00:07:42.89 I'd like to think we're all responsive, 00:07:42.92\00:07:45.16 it's very gratifying that 00:07:45.19\00:07:46.53 you got through to Dwayne in this case. 00:07:46.56\00:07:48.76 I did. 00:07:48.80\00:07:50.13 And within a day or so he emails me back 00:07:50.17\00:07:52.13 and I had put on my email. 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.47 I've been at a rally, how do I get involved 00:07:54.50\00:07:56.64 and I put my address, West Coast 00:07:56.67\00:07:58.54 and now he is East Coast. 00:07:58.57\00:08:00.18 He emails me back within a day or two 00:08:00.21\00:08:01.78 and refers me to Alan Reinach, 00:08:01.81\00:08:03.48 Executive Director of Church State Council. 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.45 You know, Alan very well. 00:08:05.48\00:08:07.52 I believe that same day or next day, 00:08:07.55\00:08:09.18 Alan turns around, he refers me to Dennis Seaton. 00:08:09.22\00:08:12.42 End of the line. Perfect. 00:08:12.45\00:08:15.19 No, but that was more appropriate 00:08:15.22\00:08:17.26 to working directly with him. 00:08:17.29\00:08:18.63 That was exactly 00:08:18.66\00:08:20.30 and I believe it was that same day 00:08:20.33\00:08:22.40 I received an email from Dennis. 00:08:22.43\00:08:23.93 Now, you see how quickly this moved? 00:08:23.97\00:08:26.10 This is God and our leadership 00:08:26.13\00:08:28.50 taking their advocacy work also very seriously. 00:08:28.54\00:08:32.11 Now Dennis Seaton 00:08:32.14\00:08:33.48 is the associate for that union. 00:08:33.51\00:08:36.38 But he works in Sacramento with the legislators there so. 00:08:36.41\00:08:39.55 Yes, yes. 00:08:39.58\00:08:41.12 The story then took on certain inevitability. 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.42 Oh, this is amazing with Dennis, 00:08:43.45\00:08:45.29 and still to this day. 00:08:45.32\00:08:47.16 So Dennis emails me I believe that same day, 00:08:47.19\00:08:49.36 he gives me his cell phone number. 00:08:49.39\00:08:51.09 And I thought a cell phone number 00:08:51.13\00:08:52.46 from one of our leaders. 00:08:52.49\00:08:53.90 This is great. Okay, I called him. 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.90 Our first conversation, 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.20 Dennis gave me some principles that I still use today. 00:08:59.23\00:09:02.27 And you've probably heard the story 00:09:02.30\00:09:03.64 about his mother who never knew a stranger. 00:09:03.67\00:09:06.01 Yes. Yes. 00:09:06.04\00:09:07.38 She never knew a stranger. But the stranger's listening. 00:09:07.41\00:09:10.91 I'll just kind of do it in a nutshell. 00:09:10.95\00:09:12.81 But his mother would greet everyone 00:09:12.85\00:09:14.58 that walked into the church, whether they were homeless, 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.55 or just a stranger coming in, 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.35 she would greet them, she would take them, 00:09:19.39\00:09:21.72 she would sit with them. 00:09:21.76\00:09:23.09 She'd walk them through the bulletin of the church. 00:09:23.12\00:09:24.96 She knew so many people, and it led to baptisms, 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.56 because she didn't give them Bible studies. 00:09:27.60\00:09:29.50 She knew that wasn't her calling, 00:09:29.53\00:09:31.13 but she would pass the baton on to the next person. 00:09:31.17\00:09:34.04 So when Dennis who I thought, 00:09:34.07\00:09:35.40 "Well, okay, I think I could do that, 00:09:35.44\00:09:36.77 I could not know a stranger. 00:09:36.81\00:09:38.21 I can go up to people and greet them and say hello, 00:09:38.24\00:09:40.24 and just say, "Hi, my name's Patti. 00:09:40.28\00:09:42.61 How can I help you," whatever it might be. 00:09:42.64\00:09:44.75 Now, you've hit on the single thing 00:09:44.78\00:09:46.41 that I believe the church 00:09:46.45\00:09:48.05 will come alive if that happens. 00:09:48.08\00:09:49.72 You know, I travel around and when I speak, 00:09:49.75\00:09:51.82 they know who I am. 00:09:51.85\00:09:53.19 And there's a certain path of acceptance, 00:09:53.22\00:09:56.29 but when I arrived, they don't know who I am. 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.26 And so often just sidle into the Sabbath School class 00:09:58.29\00:10:01.46 or whatever, and I soon make judgments on this, 00:10:01.50\00:10:04.50 on the psychology of that church, 00:10:04.53\00:10:06.10 many churches, nobody will say a word to you. 00:10:06.13\00:10:08.10 They don't. 00:10:08.14\00:10:09.47 And then they have the moment get up and greet. 00:10:09.50\00:10:11.51 I don't like that. That's sort of a forced. 00:10:11.54\00:10:13.94 In fact, that's almost embarrassing, 00:10:13.98\00:10:15.51 because if it's not coming naturally, 00:10:15.54\00:10:16.91 it's an offence. 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.98 But if people were like that naturally 00:10:19.01\00:10:21.35 in a Christian compulsion reaching out 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.32 just to connect with someone, the church would have to grow. 00:10:23.35\00:10:26.65 And I love when he said his mother 00:10:26.69\00:10:28.02 did not know a stranger. 00:10:28.06\00:10:29.39 Yeah. 00:10:29.42\00:10:30.76 You know, they all knew her, she knew them. 00:10:30.79\00:10:32.13 And she continued on that, on that journey of her. 00:10:32.16\00:10:34.46 So you heard that story, you took it to heart... 00:10:34.50\00:10:36.63 I heard that story, I took it to heart. 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.23 That was gonna be your goal. Yes. 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.30 I thought, okay, I could do that. 00:10:40.34\00:10:41.67 And then he said, you know, 00:10:41.70\00:10:43.04 mingle in the community show up, 00:10:43.07\00:10:44.41 to show up around town. 00:10:44.44\00:10:45.77 And he's to say, 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.14 "Go into elected officials offices, 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.71 meet the staffers." 00:10:49.74\00:10:51.98 So this pretty much got you on the track you're on today. 00:10:52.01\00:10:55.72 And you found it very fulfilling, 00:10:55.75\00:10:57.29 of course, haven't you? 00:10:57.32\00:10:58.65 Yes. Yes. 00:10:58.69\00:11:00.02 So, you know, where do you think 00:11:00.06\00:11:01.39 this is leading you now? 00:11:01.42\00:11:02.76 Is this an ongoing compulsion, right? 00:11:02.79\00:11:04.29 It is. 00:11:04.33\00:11:05.66 I continue to meet nonprofit organizations, 00:11:05.69\00:11:08.63 community services, and more and more 00:11:08.66\00:11:10.47 elected officials all the time. 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.40 It's been very fulfilling, 00:11:12.43\00:11:14.27 and my world around me as grown. 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.50 I've grown to appreciate everyone 00:11:16.54\00:11:19.91 and all their work in the community. 00:11:19.94\00:11:25.51 So often, in preaching on Religious Liberty, 00:11:25.55\00:11:27.82 I've invoked the story of Paul on the Damascus Road. 00:11:27.85\00:11:32.45 And I've been on that road once or twice, 00:11:32.49\00:11:34.76 and I can imagine this vindictive persecutor 00:11:34.79\00:11:38.69 of the church, 00:11:38.73\00:11:40.06 being struck down by the glory of the Lord 00:11:40.10\00:11:41.50 and turned into 00:11:41.53\00:11:42.86 the most aggressive disciple out of time, 00:11:42.90\00:11:45.57 as he put it, a puzzle out of time 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.77 to spread the gospel. 00:11:47.80\00:11:49.20 Pati's life reminds me a little of that, 00:11:49.24\00:11:52.04 seeking in places that we might not imagine for her 00:11:52.07\00:11:55.71 to find spiritual security, 00:11:55.74\00:11:59.51 but ending up not just the Seventh-day Adventist, 00:11:59.55\00:12:03.18 but after reading some of our books 00:12:03.22\00:12:05.12 of Adventist history and the inspiring dynamic 00:12:05.15\00:12:08.96 of what we're trying to do, 00:12:08.99\00:12:10.79 reach out to the community, 00:12:10.83\00:12:13.03 change public views, she's bought that vision. 00:12:13.06\00:12:16.83 And I'm sure Pati and others like her since Paul 00:12:16.87\00:12:19.67 can say equally emphatically, 00:12:19.70\00:12:23.17 to whoever whether it's Caesar 00:12:23.20\00:12:25.47 or the governor or a Congresswoman, 00:12:25.51\00:12:28.11 I was not disobedient 00:12:28.14\00:12:30.91 to that heavenly vision. 00:12:30.95\00:12:35.12 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:35.15\00:12:37.82
