Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:25.52\00:00:27.76 This is your program 00:00:27.79\00:00:29.12 that will bring you up-to-date news, 00:00:29.16\00:00:30.83 views, discussion, analysis on religious liberty 00:00:30.86\00:00:34.70 in the US and around the world. 00:00:34.73\00:00:36.93 My name is Lincoln Steed, 00:00:36.97\00:00:38.63 and I'm editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:38.67\00:00:41.14 And my guest on this program is Pati Lawrence. 00:00:41.17\00:00:44.47 Pati, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:44.51\00:00:46.44 And I could characterize you 00:00:46.47\00:00:47.81 as a religious liberty advocate. 00:00:47.84\00:00:50.35 You're a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:00:50.38\00:00:52.41 A very Seventh-day Adventist. 00:00:52.45\00:00:56.52 But, you know, I'd like to, 00:00:56.55\00:00:57.95 before we talk about some of the things 00:00:57.99\00:00:59.49 that you've done recently and experienced, 00:00:59.52\00:01:01.92 because I know you're just 00:01:01.96\00:01:03.29 full of the excitement of possibilities 00:01:03.32\00:01:05.53 in the religious liberty advocacy work 00:01:05.56\00:01:07.60 in contacting government leaders 00:01:07.63\00:01:09.33 and officials in the community. 00:01:09.36\00:01:13.44 How did you come to where you are? 00:01:13.47\00:01:15.67 How did you become even a Seventh-day Adventist? 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.54 What's your background? Well, I'm glad you asked. 00:01:17.57\00:01:19.81 But first, thank you for having me. 00:01:19.84\00:01:21.18 And it's always good to see you. 00:01:21.21\00:01:22.81 It's always good. Yeah. We had many contacts. 00:01:22.84\00:01:24.18 Oh, great conversations also. 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.61 I grew up in a home 00:01:26.65\00:01:27.98 where we didn't have prayer in the home. 00:01:28.02\00:01:30.32 My parents were Catholic. 00:01:30.35\00:01:32.72 I was baptized Catholic as a baby, 00:01:32.75\00:01:34.56 which I didn't have any upbringing in the church. 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.99 I think the only time we went to church 00:01:38.03\00:01:39.79 was if there was a wedding or a funeral. 00:01:39.83\00:01:43.20 But I can remember I was about 10 years old. 00:01:43.23\00:01:45.77 And I started to feel that 00:01:45.80\00:01:47.64 there's something somewhere that 00:01:47.67\00:01:49.60 I should worship, but what? 00:01:49.64\00:01:51.24 I had no idea. 00:01:51.27\00:01:52.61 So I started my journey. 00:01:52.64\00:01:54.98 And it may sound strange, but when I was 10, 00:01:55.01\00:01:56.98 I'm going to age myself 00:01:57.01\00:01:58.35 but the Beatles were coming to America. 00:01:58.38\00:02:01.92 The Beatles, and they started studying, 00:02:01.95\00:02:04.72 I'd see on television, 00:02:04.75\00:02:06.09 Maharishi Mahesh and I thought that's it. 00:02:06.12\00:02:08.39 That's who I'm supposed to. 00:02:08.42\00:02:09.76 And what did your parents say about this? 00:02:09.79\00:02:11.53 They were oblivious. 00:02:11.56\00:02:13.19 They really didn't pay any attention there. 00:02:13.23\00:02:15.10 I don't think I ever heard 00:02:15.13\00:02:16.46 the word God or Jesus in the home. 00:02:16.50\00:02:17.83 We didn't own a Bible in the home. 00:02:17.87\00:02:19.23 So they were Catholic you said they were born into... 00:02:19.27\00:02:20.94 They were born into. 00:02:20.97\00:02:22.30 Into sort of an identity rather than the calling. 00:02:22.34\00:02:23.67 Exactly. 00:02:23.71\00:02:26.54 And so I would try to watch the off channels. 00:02:26.57\00:02:28.81 I think it was 5428 with a static 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.51 when the Beatles would sit cross leg 00:02:31.55\00:02:32.88 with the Maharishi 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.25 and I would do the same 10, 11, 12 years old. 00:02:34.28\00:02:36.89 And after a while, I thought, "No, this can't be it." 00:02:36.92\00:02:39.22 It just felt like it was shallow. 00:02:39.25\00:02:40.79 It was empty. 00:02:40.82\00:02:42.16 Then Hare Krishna emerged on the scene. 00:02:42.19\00:02:44.39 Okay, so there I was. 00:02:44.43\00:02:45.76 That's it. Uh-huh. That's it. 00:02:45.79\00:02:47.23 That's what I'm supposed to worship. 00:02:47.26\00:02:48.96 Again emptiness. 00:02:49.00\00:02:50.63 So I went through the years of Jehovah Witness, Mormon. 00:02:50.67\00:02:55.70 So you really didn't get involved 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.07 with Hare Krishnas, 00:02:57.11\00:02:58.44 you just were attracted to it briefly. 00:02:58.47\00:03:00.68 I would begin the study. 00:03:00.71\00:03:03.18 And I would learn a little bit about it. 00:03:03.21\00:03:04.88 But I would then start to feel this pullback 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.52 where it just didn't feel 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.88 that there was any substance to it. 00:03:09.92\00:03:11.65 I didn't feel any connection. 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.15 It was empty. It was really empty. 00:03:13.19\00:03:14.62 I've got to tell you something. 00:03:14.66\00:03:16.62 You know, I grew up in roughly the same era. 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.93 And I do remember the attraction 00:03:19.96\00:03:22.86 of the not so much the Maharishi 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.67 but the Hare Krishnas. 00:03:25.70\00:03:27.44 And I remember I was back in Australia at that time, 00:03:27.47\00:03:30.27 and one Christmas time, 00:03:30.31\00:03:31.94 I was sitting at the town square in Melbourne. 00:03:31.97\00:03:37.71 Just sort of watching the crowd and suddenly, 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.45 I hear tambourines banging in and I look around, 00:03:40.48\00:03:43.89 and here is a crowd of Santa Clauses, 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.42 probably 30 or 40 of them all dressed 00:03:46.45\00:03:49.62 in beautiful Santa Claus outfits, 00:03:49.66\00:03:51.26 with tambourines came along. 00:03:51.29\00:03:53.46 And then I looked and they were all barefoot. 00:03:53.50\00:03:56.56 They were Hare Krishnas dressed 00:03:56.60\00:03:57.93 of the Santa Claus to attract people 00:03:57.97\00:04:00.50 to the season wandering funds. 00:04:00.54\00:04:02.90 And which was sort of crazy, but it shared the appeal. 00:04:02.94\00:04:06.57 And I do remember in that era, 00:04:06.61\00:04:08.61 there was a great spiritual hunger 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.48 with young people. 00:04:10.51\00:04:11.85 And this is what was going on. 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.21 And many older people saw this, sneered at it, 00:04:13.25\00:04:16.48 but even then I took it that 00:04:16.52\00:04:18.85 there was something serious going on. 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.89 And, of course, it manifested itself later 00:04:20.92\00:04:22.69 with the Jesus movement if you remember. 00:04:22.72\00:04:24.66 Keep going. Exactly, exactly. 00:04:24.69\00:04:27.10 And the barefootness 00:04:27.13\00:04:28.46 I think I still hold on to that. 00:04:28.50\00:04:29.83 I love being, I'm barefoot and in flip flops that I... 00:04:29.86\00:04:32.30 Well, I got cured of it 00:04:32.33\00:04:33.67 when I got plantar warts on my foot. 00:04:33.70\00:04:35.87 Okay, yeah. 00:04:35.90\00:04:37.24 There's a lot of bugs that you could pick up. 00:04:37.27\00:04:38.84 Exactly. 00:04:38.87\00:04:40.54 So I just, then I stopped for a while. 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.21 I sort of gave up and I thought, all right, 00:04:43.24\00:04:45.55 I'm not meant to worship or know who God Jesus creator, 00:04:45.58\00:04:51.35 I didn't know. 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.29 I was married. 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.29 My daughter was turning five years old. 00:04:55.32\00:04:57.79 And then this calling again. 00:04:57.83\00:04:59.79 And there's something inside me that kept saying, 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.00 "Don't put her in a public school. 00:05:02.03\00:05:03.87 Find a private school for her." 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.83 So I searched, I tried the Lutheran schools didn't, 00:05:05.87\00:05:09.40 I didn't care for it. 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.91 Catholicism, I tried the Catholic and nope, 00:05:10.94\00:05:12.87 that's not going to work. 00:05:12.91\00:05:14.24 So one evening, my father owned a lot of rental properties. 00:05:14.28\00:05:16.71 And one evening I was at his home, 00:05:16.75\00:05:18.71 and he's playing with my daughter 00:05:18.75\00:05:20.12 and everybody's having fun. 00:05:20.15\00:05:21.48 And I said, "Dad, 00:05:21.52\00:05:22.85 do you have any books that I can read?" 00:05:22.88\00:05:24.22 Then he says, "You know, 00:05:24.25\00:05:25.59 I just cleaned out an apartment. 00:05:25.62\00:05:26.96 There's a box of books they left behind. 00:05:26.99\00:05:28.32 Go on the garage, you'll see a big box of books." 00:05:28.36\00:05:30.33 Well, yes. 00:05:30.36\00:05:31.69 This was in about 1980/81. 00:05:31.73\00:05:35.13 And I found a book called "The Legacy." 00:05:35.16\00:05:37.40 Now, The Legacy was about Kellogg, 00:05:37.43\00:05:39.23 and it was about 00:05:39.27\00:05:40.60 Adventist hospitals and schools. 00:05:40.64\00:05:42.64 A little bit about the church, 00:05:42.67\00:05:44.01 but more about the hospitals 00:05:44.04\00:05:45.37 and the schools and I said, "Schools." 00:05:45.41\00:05:47.11 Where are Seventh-day Adventists? 00:05:47.14\00:05:48.71 I didn't know. 00:05:48.74\00:05:50.08 I had no, I'd never heard about Seventh-day Adventists. 00:05:50.11\00:05:53.15 I read the book took it home with me. 00:05:53.18\00:05:55.72 I started calling around the closest Adventists school 00:05:55.75\00:05:59.32 was West Covina Hills, 00:05:59.35\00:06:00.82 but at the time we were renting, 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.96 we were renting, this church still hadn't been built there 00:06:02.99\00:06:05.23 in West Covina Hills. 00:06:05.26\00:06:06.59 My wife's sister used to live in that area 00:06:06.63\00:06:07.96 so I know it very, very well. 00:06:08.00\00:06:09.33 Okay. 00:06:09.36\00:06:10.70 I lived in Claremont. 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.07 I lived in the Clermont area. 00:06:12.10\00:06:13.44 So I called and I spoke with the pastor's wife, 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.54 and she was very friendly and said, 00:06:15.57\00:06:17.24 "Come on down, come visit us." 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.71 So I did and I felt 00:06:19.74\00:06:22.21 just the acceptance of the sincerity of her 00:06:22.24\00:06:25.68 and many of the other mothers that were there. 00:06:25.71\00:06:27.52 I said, "This is it. 00:06:27.55\00:06:28.88 I'm putting her in the school here." 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.25 She went through K through eight West Covina Hills 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.02 and I went through the years with her. 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.42 The pastor and his wife, 00:06:35.46\00:06:36.79 his family, they took us under their wing. 00:06:36.83\00:06:39.43 It was and the pastor's wife would always say to me, 00:06:39.46\00:06:43.00 John 3:16. 00:06:43.03\00:06:45.00 And I was like, "Okay." 00:06:45.03\00:06:46.37 I would listen to her through the years. 00:06:46.40\00:06:47.77 But I enrolled her in the school, 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.90 I think 1980/81 like I said, 00:06:49.94\00:06:53.01 we were building our church, 00:06:53.04\00:06:54.38 the church was finally built, the school was built, 00:06:54.41\00:06:56.31 she was one of the first classes 00:06:56.34\00:06:57.68 in the school. 00:06:57.71\00:06:59.05 And it didn't, it took until 1989 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.52 that I was baptized. 00:07:01.55\00:07:02.98 And I'll tell you why it took that long. 00:07:03.02\00:07:04.52 I don't know why it took so long. 00:07:04.55\00:07:05.89 I was, she was in the adventurers, 00:07:05.92\00:07:07.59 she was in the school, we were active in the church, 00:07:07.62\00:07:10.43 but there was something I don't know. 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.99 I found a book one day at an antique store 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.96 called Synopsis of the Present Truth 00:07:15.00\00:07:16.87 by Uriah Smith, 1884. 00:07:16.90\00:07:19.90 You're throwing me at every point. 00:07:19.93\00:07:21.40 When you found the first book 00:07:21.44\00:07:23.14 I thought you're going to say Great Controversy, 00:07:23.17\00:07:24.94 because I know this, many of those 00:07:24.97\00:07:26.68 that have been sold and put on shelves, 00:07:26.71\00:07:29.04 and I've myself seen them in sight on sidewalk sales 00:07:29.08\00:07:32.65 and just sort of been cleared out. 00:07:32.68\00:07:34.72 And on one level yes, they weren't used. 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.32 But they disseminated, they're just in the system. 00:07:37.35\00:07:40.12 And many people have discovered truth 00:07:40.16\00:07:42.66 because of them. 00:07:42.69\00:07:44.03 But yeah, you're right. 00:07:44.06\00:07:45.39 It was The Legacy of a Kellogg and the health message. 00:07:45.43\00:07:47.43 You were getting at the source. 00:07:47.46\00:07:50.40 Uriah Smith. Yeah. 00:07:50.43\00:07:51.83 Synopsis of the Present Truth, 1884. 00:07:51.87\00:07:54.44 It's an original copy. 00:07:54.47\00:07:56.20 And that started with Daniel 00:07:56.24\00:07:57.57 and then Revelation that convicted me. 00:07:57.61\00:08:00.38 I said, "Thank you, God. 00:08:00.41\00:08:03.48 Thank you, God." 00:08:03.51\00:08:04.85 And I was baptized, I still have the book. 00:08:04.88\00:08:07.38 And I did a search recently. 00:08:07.42\00:08:08.92 And the search I found said there aren't many copies 00:08:08.95\00:08:11.45 or any, any around. 00:08:11.49\00:08:13.49 And it's very rare. 00:08:13.52\00:08:14.89 And I think one article I read said, 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.83 there is one copy around, I thought I have that copy. 00:08:16.86\00:08:20.13 I won't tell you my address, I have that copy. 00:08:20.16\00:08:23.60 Should check with the White Estate 00:08:23.63\00:08:25.13 that keep a record of these things. 00:08:25.17\00:08:26.50 I should. 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.64 Well, they might try to steal it from you, 00:08:28.67\00:08:31.37 but that's a treasure. 00:08:31.41\00:08:33.07 And more than just the book what it contains, of course, 00:08:33.11\00:08:36.24 that's the root thinking that established our church. 00:08:36.28\00:08:40.52 Exactly. 00:08:40.55\00:08:41.88 And I hold on to our pioneers on my refrigerator. 00:08:41.92\00:08:44.32 I have a article on Joseph Bates, 00:08:44.35\00:08:46.62 Our Core Values, Back To Our Core Values. 00:08:46.65\00:08:49.02 And what do you know, discovering naturally 00:08:49.06\00:08:51.99 that Adventism is not Ellen White. 00:08:52.03\00:08:54.50 Ellen White was a major pioneer, 00:08:54.53\00:08:56.80 but they were a number of others 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.63 that were deeply studying the Bible 00:08:58.67\00:09:00.20 and prophecies and arrived at these determinations. 00:09:00.24\00:09:03.87 And then there was the confirmation 00:09:03.91\00:09:05.67 we believe divinely 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.04 but it's not right at all to think 00:09:07.08\00:09:10.65 that it was sort of a singular prophetic voice 00:09:10.68\00:09:13.52 and everyone getting around. 00:09:13.55\00:09:14.88 No, that's like Joseph Bates, Uriah Smith, James White. 00:09:14.92\00:09:18.52 Yes. So I was convicting. 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.36 Even A.T. Jones, first editor 00:09:20.39\00:09:22.42 of our religious liberty channel. 00:09:22.46\00:09:23.79 I have one of his books 00:09:23.83\00:09:25.16 I believe it's called Rights of the People. 00:09:25.19\00:09:26.53 I have read his books. Yes. 00:09:26.56\00:09:27.90 And he wrote about the two kingdoms. 00:09:27.93\00:09:29.26 And a lot of political, religio-political analysis. 00:09:29.30\00:09:32.23 Yes. 00:09:32.27\00:09:33.60 So there was the substance, there was the truth for me, 00:09:33.64\00:09:38.84 unlike any other thing that I've ever dabbled with. 00:09:38.87\00:09:41.68 And as you move through the faith spectrum, 00:09:41.71\00:09:45.08 you'd come across even some more. 00:09:45.11\00:09:47.92 I did. 00:09:47.95\00:09:49.35 Well, my daughter was baptized. 00:09:49.38\00:09:50.72 I was baptized in '89. 00:09:50.75\00:09:52.69 Years later, I left Adventism I don't know why, 00:09:52.72\00:09:56.02 I still to this day try to think why did I leave. 00:09:56.06\00:09:59.36 And I embraced Islam, 00:09:59.39\00:10:01.40 I became a Muslim for quite a few years. 00:10:01.43\00:10:03.60 And what attracted you to Islam? 00:10:03.63\00:10:04.97 What was the contact on that? 00:10:05.00\00:10:06.47 You know, I met a family, I worked with someone, 00:10:06.50\00:10:08.44 I met a family, and the love that they had 00:10:08.47\00:10:12.07 and there're similarities to Adventism. 00:10:12.11\00:10:15.04 And it was after 9/11. 00:10:15.08\00:10:17.91 And my heart just was drawn to these people. 00:10:17.95\00:10:20.35 First of all, just for compassion. 00:10:20.38\00:10:22.08 I saw some of the... 00:10:22.12\00:10:25.55 I saw some of the family went through their teenage boy, 00:10:25.59\00:10:28.09 one day when I was over visiting, 00:10:28.12\00:10:29.62 and he comes home, 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.06 and he didn't want his mother to pick him up 00:10:31.09\00:10:32.43 from school anymore. 00:10:32.46\00:10:33.80 She wore the hijab, she wore, 00:10:33.83\00:10:35.26 and he would be teased in school. 00:10:35.30\00:10:36.90 He came home one day, 00:10:36.93\00:10:38.30 yelling and screaming at his mother and say, 00:10:38.33\00:10:39.97 I'm ashamed of you, don't dress like that, 00:10:40.00\00:10:41.57 I'm being picked on, I'm being beat up in school. 00:10:41.60\00:10:43.97 And it was sad. It just broke my heart. 00:10:44.01\00:10:45.71 But I had already left the church, 00:10:45.74\00:10:48.58 I really can't say why, but I embraced it. 00:10:48.61\00:10:52.38 And it was. I don't have... 00:10:52.41\00:10:55.55 You know you've had a personal journey. 00:10:55.58\00:10:57.15 And there are so many dynamic personal dynamics 00:10:57.19\00:11:01.39 that affect that. 00:11:01.42\00:11:02.76 But I think at the end, 00:11:02.79\00:11:04.13 it's given you more than a typical understanding 00:11:04.16\00:11:07.30 of different faith viewpoints. 00:11:07.33\00:11:09.23 It has. 00:11:09.26\00:11:10.60 And this is and I'm sure you understand, 00:11:10.63\00:11:12.53 but we need to reiterate it for our viewers, 00:11:12.57\00:11:14.77 that religious liberty is not a matter of defending 00:11:14.80\00:11:18.81 just any one religion. 00:11:18.84\00:11:21.24 It comes hard to a lot of people. 00:11:21.28\00:11:23.45 At this point, you and I are quite convinced 00:11:23.48\00:11:27.08 that we found the truth. 00:11:27.12\00:11:29.65 But with religious liberty principles, 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.85 even knowing you have the truth, 00:11:31.89\00:11:33.29 you have to defend the right 00:11:33.32\00:11:34.92 of all other believers of whatever system 00:11:34.96\00:11:37.99 because they're children of God, 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.36 they've made a choice of conviction and conscience, 00:11:39.39\00:11:42.70 and you defend them 00:11:42.73\00:11:44.07 even to the death if necessary, 00:11:44.10\00:11:45.43 doesn't mean you think they're right. 00:11:45.47\00:11:48.54 In fact, I think, you know, some of the belief systems are, 00:11:48.57\00:11:52.44 you know, I almost wonder how could anybody come with it, 00:11:52.47\00:11:55.84 you know, it's just craziness? 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.21 But they have a right and I have to respect it 00:11:58.25\00:12:00.48 and the dignity of humanity means that 00:12:00.52\00:12:04.02 they might think the same as me. 00:12:04.05\00:12:05.62 So I give them 00:12:05.65\00:12:07.06 the full freedom for protection. 00:12:07.09\00:12:08.76 Let's take a break now 00:12:08.79\00:12:10.19 and we'll come back and talk a little bit more 00:12:10.23\00:12:12.69 with Pati about her faith journey. 00:12:12.73\00:12:14.76
