Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, I was carrying out 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.60 at some length about the meaning 00:00:04.63\00:00:06.74 of Martin Luther King and his whole movement. 00:00:06.77\00:00:08.87 Of course, using that sermon example 00:00:08.90\00:00:11.07 of sleeping through the revolution. 00:00:11.11\00:00:14.21 It's quite possible with so many changes afoot, 00:00:14.24\00:00:17.11 and in particular religious liberty, 00:00:17.15\00:00:19.61 so much the play thing 00:00:19.65\00:00:22.18 of those that would ultimately destroy it, 00:00:22.22\00:00:24.62 that we might decide, well, what does it matter? 00:00:24.65\00:00:27.69 It'll pass, I don't need to do anything. 00:00:27.72\00:00:30.09 That is the worst attitude anybody can have, 00:00:30.13\00:00:33.09 least of all the Christian. 00:00:33.13\00:00:35.36 Martin Luther King addressed this actually 00:00:35.40\00:00:37.33 in his very last sermon, 00:00:37.37\00:00:41.17 bare hours before he was assassinated. 00:00:41.20\00:00:44.57 And he spoke about the man on the Jericho road, 00:00:44.61\00:00:50.55 the Good Samaritan, the man that was there, 00:00:50.58\00:00:53.11 wallowing in his blood, probably dying. 00:00:53.15\00:00:56.32 Because I do think Jesus was telling 00:00:56.35\00:00:58.29 an actual story He knew about. 00:00:58.32\00:01:00.56 And the Levite 00:01:00.59\00:01:03.19 and the priests they went by. 00:01:03.22\00:01:08.50 They ignored him. 00:01:08.53\00:01:09.86 And Martin Luther King raises this point, 00:01:09.90\00:01:12.13 he says, the first question that the priests asked, 00:01:12.17\00:01:15.10 the first question that the Levite asked was, 00:01:15.14\00:01:18.11 "If I stopped to help this man, what will happen to me?" 00:01:18.14\00:01:23.18 And that's a legitimate question nowadays. 00:01:23.21\00:01:27.15 Our world has consequences 00:01:27.18\00:01:29.85 if you stand up even within a church sometime, 00:01:29.88\00:01:33.82 there's a price to pay, certainly within civil society, 00:01:33.86\00:01:37.66 you could be seen as a religious fanatic, 00:01:37.69\00:01:41.06 you could be seen as raising a false alarm 00:01:41.10\00:01:44.30 or Chicken Little of civil rights, for example. 00:01:44.33\00:01:49.20 There's a price, 00:01:49.24\00:01:50.57 you could be ostracized in subtle ways, 00:01:50.61\00:01:53.21 but Martin Luther King took it in a different direction, 00:01:53.24\00:01:56.34 that is the appropriate one, I believe. 00:01:56.38\00:01:58.78 He says, but the Good Samaritan came by 00:01:58.81\00:02:01.82 and Jesus reversed the question. 00:02:01.85\00:02:04.75 And he reversed the question rather, 00:02:04.79\00:02:07.32 "If I do not stop to help this man, 00:02:07.36\00:02:09.62 what will happen to him?" 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.43 It goes back to what I think 00:02:12.46\00:02:13.96 I said earlier that John MacArthur said 00:02:14.00\00:02:16.90 to those theology students, you know, 00:02:16.93\00:02:19.87 you're not here to change the world, 00:02:19.90\00:02:22.07 you're here to change lives. 00:02:22.10\00:02:24.57 And if we're concentrated as Jesus mandated that 00:02:24.61\00:02:28.38 we must be on reaching out to other people, 00:02:28.41\00:02:31.51 not just to make the members of the church, 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.92 but as Christians to imbue them with the mind of Christ, 00:02:34.95\00:02:39.05 with the ideals of Christ, 00:02:39.09\00:02:41.12 with the vision of living with Christ 00:02:41.16\00:02:44.53 and being one with Christ. 00:02:44.56\00:02:45.99 You know, that great prayer of Jesus, 00:02:46.03\00:02:47.93 about one this was not just wordplay, 00:02:47.96\00:02:51.30 it was how it really must be for the Christian. 00:02:51.33\00:02:54.94 We're seeking a oneness 00:02:54.97\00:02:56.37 with the divine, not a oneness with, 00:02:56.40\00:02:59.07 you know, a political community. 00:02:59.11\00:03:02.41 We have to deal with that along the way, 00:03:02.44\00:03:04.31 but we need to keep our sights fixed on the eternal kingdom. 00:03:04.35\00:03:08.15 And I do believe in this era 00:03:08.18\00:03:09.92 will have very legitimately social justices rising up 00:03:09.95\00:03:15.02 again as the unanswered question. 00:03:15.06\00:03:17.03 There is great social injustice in the world. 00:03:17.06\00:03:21.70 And Seventh-day Adventists and other Christians 00:03:21.73\00:03:23.77 and other people of faith, 00:03:23.80\00:03:25.13 I think need to show that 00:03:25.17\00:03:26.63 they are concerned for the community, 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.30 they can't shuttle on by 00:03:28.34\00:03:31.11 or shuffle on by the distance, not my concern. 00:03:31.14\00:03:34.68 If there's poor in the world, we should feel poor. 00:03:34.71\00:03:38.55 If there are those who are abused, 00:03:38.58\00:03:40.52 we should feel abused. 00:03:40.55\00:03:42.38 You know, it says Jesus was touched 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.29 with the feeling of our infirmities. 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.72 As followers of Christ, we cannot help 00:03:46.76\00:03:49.42 but be touched by what's going on. 00:03:49.46\00:03:52.13 But the solution is not to make the world as, 00:03:52.16\00:03:55.83 you know, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam says, you know, 00:03:55.86\00:03:59.90 make the world entire in a way that we like. 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.10 We can't do that. 00:04:03.14\00:04:04.77 Jesus has promised 00:04:04.81\00:04:06.14 to remake broken lives here and now, 00:04:06.17\00:04:09.54 and then together, 00:04:09.58\00:04:11.01 the mended individuals that make up 00:04:11.05\00:04:14.45 the church can move on to an eternity with Christ. 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.39 It's an interesting dynamic that we've seen 00:04:17.42\00:04:21.09 worked out very often through history, 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.32 the great missionary endeavors that flowed out of England, 00:04:23.36\00:04:27.36 in the Protestant era that George Whitfield 00:04:27.40\00:04:30.10 and others then came to the new world, 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.93 the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:04:32.97\00:04:35.50 the Nazarenes, the Methodists, 00:04:35.54\00:04:37.01 these are all outgrowths of this altruism 00:04:37.04\00:04:39.94 that did change the world, 00:04:39.97\00:04:41.48 but didn't seek to change the political world, 00:04:41.51\00:04:44.91 but by extension, it automatically did. 00:04:44.95\00:04:48.15 And if America seeks godliness in this way, 00:04:48.18\00:04:51.79 if it seeks justice in this way, 00:04:51.82\00:04:54.06 there will be an improvement, but if we, you know, 00:04:54.09\00:04:57.26 have the sanctimonious pharisaical 00:04:57.29\00:04:59.33 attitude of religion that, 00:04:59.36\00:05:01.63 you know, the forms must be followed, 00:05:01.66\00:05:04.20 even as the disadvantage are ignored. 00:05:04.23\00:05:07.67 I believe we'll head to a despotism of indifference, 00:05:07.70\00:05:11.87 a despotism of indifference at a time 00:05:11.91\00:05:15.11 when it's so obvious that 00:05:15.14\00:05:17.05 there are people crying out as never before for justice. 00:05:17.08\00:05:21.28 Now Martin Luther King said that 00:05:21.32\00:05:23.18 the arm of the moral universe is wide, 00:05:23.22\00:05:25.95 but it bends toward justice. 00:05:25.99\00:05:27.69 Yes, the bending will culminate in a new world, 00:05:27.72\00:05:31.76 but in this present temporal world, 00:05:31.79\00:05:35.40 we need to stick to the true values, of course, 00:05:35.43\00:05:37.60 of godliness, as far as the civil society, 00:05:37.63\00:05:41.00 claim unreservedly the right for religious freedom, 00:05:41.04\00:05:44.71 as far as their fellows unreservedly 00:05:44.74\00:05:47.48 give them the charity 00:05:47.51\00:05:49.11 and the love and the concern that 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.15 Jesus asked of all of us, 00:05:51.18\00:05:54.38 and we need to work to improve their lives, 00:05:54.42\00:05:59.12 and point them toward 00:05:59.15\00:06:00.49 an eternal kingdom of bliss 00:06:00.52\00:06:02.86 and, you know, fulfillment and a perfection 00:06:02.89\00:06:07.60 that we can only dream of in this world. 00:06:07.63\00:06:11.23 There are no paradises here, 00:06:11.27\00:06:13.44 but there is a kingdom to come and to win. 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.70 Jesus before Pilate was the crucial moment 00:06:19.91\00:06:23.51 of the failed revolution 00:06:23.55\00:06:25.65 if you like that Judas had started. 00:06:25.68\00:06:29.25 And Jesus said unequivocally to Pilate, He says, 00:06:29.28\00:06:32.35 "My kingdom is not of this world. 00:06:32.39\00:06:34.86 If it were, My followers would fight for Me." 00:06:34.89\00:06:38.46 What did His followers do? 00:06:38.49\00:06:40.40 Either denied him, 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.06 John fled almost naked into the night. 00:06:42.10\00:06:45.87 And all forsook Him, it said, 00:06:45.90\00:06:48.50 but with the Spirit of God and an understanding of what 00:06:48.54\00:06:51.34 God was teaching them, things changed. 00:06:51.37\00:06:53.88 And they did indeed change the world. 00:06:53.91\00:06:57.05 I hope and pray that today, 00:06:57.08\00:06:59.38 as we enter what is clearly a revolutionary period, 00:06:59.41\00:07:03.28 in our world's history, an end time cataclysm, 00:07:03.32\00:07:06.59 if you like, or a cacophony, 00:07:06.62\00:07:09.89 that somehow we will find that 00:07:09.92\00:07:12.09 spirit-filled energy 00:07:12.13\00:07:14.23 to proclaim God's eternal kingdom, 00:07:14.26\00:07:16.90 to show compassion to those who are suffering 00:07:16.93\00:07:19.03 under the lash of events, 00:07:19.07\00:07:21.20 and to point all and sundry and ourselves in our innermost 00:07:21.24\00:07:26.07 being to the coming Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:07:26.11\00:07:30.41 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:07:30.45\00:07:33.45
