Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:01.53\00:00:03.70 where I was sharing some thoughts 00:00:03.73\00:00:05.17 on the commoditization of humanity. 00:00:05.20\00:00:08.84 Looking back to World War II and what the Nazis did, 00:00:08.87\00:00:11.64 but to the present 00:00:11.67\00:00:13.64 and what we know is going on in China against detainees, 00:00:13.68\00:00:18.11 many of whom, if not most 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.32 are detainees 00:00:20.35\00:00:22.12 based on their religious identity, 00:00:22.15\00:00:25.39 many Christians certainly among them. 00:00:25.42\00:00:28.42 So I want to raise this point. 00:00:28.46\00:00:30.79 For us, it says, I wrote, 00:00:30.83\00:00:33.09 perhaps we are not so morally vigilant 00:00:33.13\00:00:37.40 because the commoditization of life 00:00:37.43\00:00:40.04 is now a full-on aspect of our digital lives. 00:00:40.07\00:00:45.97 Not too long ago, 00:00:46.01\00:00:47.34 one of the political parties rather openly railed 00:00:47.38\00:00:50.51 against as they put it, 00:00:50.55\00:00:51.88 the eaters or consumers 00:00:51.91\00:00:54.58 as being a drag on the producers. 00:00:54.62\00:00:58.35 One natural consequence of that 00:00:58.39\00:01:00.36 is a dulling of human sensibility 00:01:00.39\00:01:03.59 as we deal with illegals who are costing us, 00:01:03.63\00:01:06.63 so we are told and threatening us 00:01:06.66\00:01:09.56 so we are told, 00:01:09.60\00:01:11.13 and must be cleansed from our midst. 00:01:11.17\00:01:14.00 Of course, any country has the right to take steps 00:01:14.04\00:01:17.01 to protect itself and uphold its laws 00:01:17.04\00:01:19.47 and its borders. 00:01:19.51\00:01:20.84 But I see in this, the social dynamic, 00:01:20.88\00:01:24.48 expressing a reduction of humans to utility value. 00:01:24.51\00:01:30.09 Meanwhile, we all fondle our cell phones, 00:01:30.12\00:01:33.46 which track our every move and watch us incessantly. 00:01:33.49\00:01:36.86 We install ever listening bugs in our homes. 00:01:36.89\00:01:40.43 We are surrounded by ever smarter, 00:01:40.46\00:01:42.70 artificial intelligence that triangulates 00:01:42.73\00:01:45.90 all our personal information 00:01:45.93\00:01:47.84 to evaluate our personality, our health, 00:01:47.87\00:01:51.87 and our security risk factors 00:01:51.91\00:01:53.84 and indeed our very utility to the economy 00:01:53.88\00:01:57.61 and to the system. 00:01:57.65\00:01:59.61 In the US, at least, 00:01:59.65\00:02:00.98 there is still a residual memory 00:02:01.02\00:02:03.65 of the founding principle of republicanism, 00:02:03.69\00:02:07.19 not a party, 00:02:07.22\00:02:08.56 a principle that the power derives from the people. 00:02:08.59\00:02:12.46 In the Constitution there is still unobliterated 00:02:12.49\00:02:17.07 if largely unread, 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.10 applications of the greatly fought 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.34 for protection such as Habeas corpus 00:02:21.37\00:02:25.07 and protections from intrusion into our private affairs. 00:02:25.11\00:02:29.44 There is still an insistence on hands off 00:02:29.48\00:02:32.88 for religious practice. 00:02:32.91\00:02:35.15 But what will we do 00:02:35.18\00:02:37.35 when the algorithms and the public mood 00:02:37.39\00:02:40.66 tell us that we cannot afford certain viewpoints? 00:02:40.69\00:02:44.79 That is a huge unanswered question, 00:02:44.83\00:02:48.30 a huge unanswered question. 00:02:48.33\00:02:50.80 You know, in many ways we're coming close 00:02:50.83\00:02:53.20 to the mentality of the Jews in Jesus' time. 00:02:53.23\00:02:57.47 Obviously, there were doctrinal differences between Jesus 00:02:57.51\00:03:01.54 and the Pharisees, a little, 00:03:01.58\00:03:03.11 less than we might realize. 00:03:03.14\00:03:04.71 He basically was on their wavelength 00:03:04.75\00:03:06.68 because they believed 00:03:06.72\00:03:08.65 like he did in the resurrection 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.05 from the dead and miracles and so on. 00:03:10.09\00:03:12.05 There were even bigger differences 00:03:12.09\00:03:13.46 between Jesus and the Sadducees 00:03:13.49\00:03:16.36 who didn't believe in the divine 00:03:16.39\00:03:18.16 and the supernatural. 00:03:18.19\00:03:20.43 There were huge differences between Jesus 00:03:20.46\00:03:23.06 and the Roman occupation, 00:03:23.10\00:03:27.47 and then the puppet rulers. 00:03:27.50\00:03:31.84 Remember Jesus spoke of that fox Herod. 00:03:31.87\00:03:35.34 He was very critical, 00:03:35.38\00:03:37.41 but not involved with political matters. 00:03:37.45\00:03:41.68 So when Jesus ran foul of the Jewish authorities 00:03:41.72\00:03:45.99 and with the potential to be seen as seditious 00:03:46.02\00:03:49.46 by the Romans themselves, 00:03:49.49\00:03:51.43 the Sanhedrin met and it was said in that group, 00:03:51.46\00:03:55.96 dealing with this dissident who some of them 00:03:56.00\00:03:57.97 were more sympathetic than others. 00:03:58.00\00:03:59.57 And we know that Nicodemus in that group 00:03:59.60\00:04:01.54 became a follower. 00:04:01.57\00:04:02.90 So there was some pro-voices. 00:04:02.94\00:04:05.04 But the swing against him came when it was said, 00:04:05.07\00:04:08.64 it's better that one man die 00:04:08.68\00:04:12.75 than that the nation should perish. 00:04:12.78\00:04:16.28 It was said in Germany in World War II. 00:04:16.32\00:04:19.19 Better for the whole people, 00:04:19.22\00:04:20.76 these Jews and gypsies and communists 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.16 and, you know, that was a bit broader 00:04:23.19\00:04:24.53 than just the Jews, 00:04:24.56\00:04:25.89 but this part of our society 00:04:25.93\00:04:27.96 better that they be destroyed 00:04:28.00\00:04:30.70 than the Fatherland go down to disgrace. 00:04:30.73\00:04:34.64 Better an equation 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.40 balancing one against the other, 00:04:36.44\00:04:39.21 which is done in many things, 00:04:39.24\00:04:40.94 but dangerous when you're dealing 00:04:40.98\00:04:42.31 with human lives. 00:04:42.34\00:04:44.75 Better that one man die than the nation should perish. 00:04:44.78\00:04:49.45 The Marines which I've never joined 00:04:49.48\00:04:52.32 and I'm not militaristic, 00:04:52.35\00:04:53.72 but I've been inspired by their mentality 00:04:53.76\00:04:56.52 or their slogan in the past, never to leave a man behind. 00:04:56.56\00:05:00.46 The Marines try to do that. 00:05:00.50\00:05:02.40 I don't think they've always been able to. 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.40 I think in Mogadishu there was a horrible incident 00:05:04.43\00:05:09.87 where a few were left behind. 00:05:09.90\00:05:12.04 And I remember, 00:05:12.07\00:05:13.51 in Afghanistan shortly after 9/11, 00:05:13.54\00:05:15.91 there was the infamous scene 00:05:15.94\00:05:18.21 where a Marine was shot 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.22 and the Taliban and Al-Qaeda were savaging the body. 00:05:20.25\00:05:25.65 That is the things that are most regrettable 00:05:25.69\00:05:27.26 because the Marines 00:05:27.29\00:05:28.62 don't want to leave someone behind. 00:05:28.66\00:05:30.46 There's this great respect for a fellow soldier, 00:05:30.49\00:05:34.20 for a human being. 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.56 Western democracies also have, in the larger sense, 00:05:36.60\00:05:41.10 tried to embody this that humans are valuable. 00:05:41.14\00:05:44.31 And I like to think 00:05:44.34\00:05:45.97 that in our present COVID emergency, 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.08 which is full of disinformation, 00:05:48.11\00:05:49.88 overreaction, poor planning, and all the rest of that, 00:05:49.91\00:05:53.21 what lies behind it is still the sense 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.15 that we cannot stand by while humans die 00:05:56.18\00:05:59.35 or allowed to die, 00:05:59.39\00:06:01.09 either by neglect or poor planning, 00:06:01.12\00:06:04.16 but if there's something we can do anything, 00:06:04.19\00:06:06.96 we need to intervene to save their lives. 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.90 You know, that's not a dissimilar dynamic 00:06:09.93\00:06:12.53 that is existed behind true religious liberty. 00:06:12.57\00:06:16.40 People misunderstand religious liberty 00:06:16.44\00:06:18.24 just because we have open religious liberty 00:06:18.27\00:06:20.91 and I'm pushing for it. 00:06:20.94\00:06:22.28 It doesn't mean I think that this religion 00:06:22.31\00:06:24.15 or that faith system are wonderful. 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.15 I might think they're the most pernicious views 00:06:26.18\00:06:29.25 for human beings to hold destructive. 00:06:29.28\00:06:32.35 But as fellow human beings, 00:06:32.39\00:06:34.29 I have to not only allowed but defend 00:06:34.32\00:06:38.53 and spend myself in defending 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.46 their right to believe it, 00:06:41.50\00:06:42.83 because they are a human being 00:06:42.86\00:06:44.30 with thoughts and inclinations 00:06:44.33\00:06:46.40 just like me and is to be respected. 00:06:46.43\00:06:48.87 The West has brought that to a high level. 00:06:48.90\00:06:51.87 And, of course, republicanism is a whole-ism, 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.88 is a whole government system, 00:06:54.91\00:06:56.31 based on the respect of the individual. 00:06:56.34\00:06:59.81 As I've often said on this program, 00:06:59.85\00:07:01.28 it's not democracy writ large, 00:07:01.32\00:07:04.22 which can easily have the majority vote 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.39 against and eject a small minority. 00:07:07.42\00:07:09.86 No, republicanism is power 00:07:09.89\00:07:12.26 deriving from the people and protecting all people. 00:07:12.29\00:07:18.60 A democratic republican system doesn't protect the minority, 00:07:18.63\00:07:22.87 the disadvantage, the powerless, 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.87 it's denied its very essence. 00:07:24.91\00:07:27.91 And when we look at the modern world 00:07:27.94\00:07:29.94 and this inescapable commoditization 00:07:29.98\00:07:33.48 of the individual, 00:07:33.52\00:07:34.85 it's easily done as we gather together in cities 00:07:34.88\00:07:37.99 and every activity and every financial exchange 00:07:38.02\00:07:43.22 can be quantified and weighed 00:07:43.26\00:07:46.59 in the balances of what is said. 00:07:46.63\00:07:48.56 And it's a dangerous phrase. 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.03 The common good, 00:07:51.07\00:07:52.60 it's very easy to decide 00:07:52.63\00:07:55.20 these people are not necessary, 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.27 this class are not to be helped because it's futile. 00:07:57.31\00:08:00.08 They're costing us too much 00:08:00.11\00:08:01.58 or this belief system 00:08:01.61\00:08:03.81 is something that we cannot afford anymore, 00:08:03.85\00:08:06.78 because it's disruptive, it cost too much. 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.98 It might even be something that will spread through 00:08:10.02\00:08:13.89 and spread dissatisfaction to other people. 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.86 Any number of reasons, 00:08:15.89\00:08:17.23 but you can sort of put a number value 00:08:17.26\00:08:20.66 on this freedom 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.03 and it can be weighed in a utilitarian balance. 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.57 And those that have no sympathy for it 00:08:25.60\00:08:27.84 maybe decide whether or not it's allowed. 00:08:27.87\00:08:30.61 That's where we're heading. 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.61 We've been there in the world at least before. 00:08:32.64\00:08:36.08 The US hasn't had a great experience with this, 00:08:36.11\00:08:38.71 but I believe events, modernization, 00:08:38.75\00:08:42.08 the stresses of life are moving us 00:08:42.12\00:08:44.42 irrevocably toward this point, 00:08:44.45\00:08:46.96 where the bean counters of morality 00:08:46.99\00:08:49.79 are going to be allowed 00:08:49.82\00:08:51.79 or if we're not careful allowed 00:08:51.83\00:08:53.90 to make these life or death decisions 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.63 on people groups, 00:08:56.67\00:08:58.30 belief groups, and on principles. 00:08:58.33\00:09:01.27 And the greatest principle I believe that we have 00:09:01.30\00:09:04.24 in our government today or in our civil life, 00:09:04.27\00:09:06.94 is religious liberty. 00:09:06.98\00:09:09.34 It must be protected, 00:09:09.38\00:09:11.48 because human beings are not commodities. 00:09:11.51\00:09:14.52 They're sent in creations of a divine being 00:09:14.55\00:09:18.72 and we owe our life to God, we owe our loyalty to Him. 00:09:18.75\00:09:23.26 And I believe in reading my Bible 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.36 that we will have our continued existence 00:09:25.39\00:09:27.36 with Him one day. 00:09:27.40\00:09:28.93 How can we allow anyone to so demean 00:09:28.96\00:09:31.17 that is to see us 00:09:31.20\00:09:32.53 as just the number and an option 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.44 among many other options? 00:09:34.47\00:09:35.80
