Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.22\00:00:29.72 This is your program that's designed 00:00:29.76\00:00:31.53 to bring you up to speed on religious liberty, 00:00:31.56\00:00:34.83 dynamics both in present day events, 00:00:34.86\00:00:37.40 and some of the history and legal background 00:00:37.43\00:00:39.67 to this freedom above all freedoms, 00:00:39.70\00:00:43.34 the first freedom. 00:00:43.37\00:00:44.71 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:44.74\00:00:48.31 And I want to share some things with you today. 00:00:48.34\00:00:53.08 The best way I can do 00:00:53.11\00:00:54.45 is to quote from my own writings 00:00:54.48\00:00:56.35 from Liberty Magazine, 00:00:56.38\00:00:58.09 which I hope you're familiar with. 00:00:58.12\00:01:01.02 This is a cover of a recent one. 00:01:01.06\00:01:03.46 Actually, the latest is the time of filming this 00:01:03.49\00:01:07.40 bit of a flashback 00:01:07.43\00:01:08.76 to an American presidential candidate 00:01:08.80\00:01:12.20 who was a self-proclaimed 00:01:12.23\00:01:13.57 king of the world and a religious leader 00:01:13.60\00:01:18.24 who wanted to join church and state. 00:01:18.27\00:01:20.91 He was treated as a joke 00:01:20.94\00:01:22.28 because he was never a serious contender 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.95 but to imagine that this central principle 00:01:23.98\00:01:27.98 of the constitution restrains everyone 00:01:28.02\00:01:29.98 is to be naive. 00:01:30.02\00:01:31.35 Of course, there are people 00:01:31.39\00:01:32.72 then and now who want to join church and state. 00:01:32.75\00:01:35.99 We're living in a very interesting time 00:01:36.02\00:01:38.29 of the world's history. 00:01:38.33\00:01:39.66 There's no question. 00:01:39.69\00:01:41.46 Everything is up for grabs in the last few decades, 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.93 the old norm seemed to be fading. 00:01:44.97\00:01:47.37 At the moment, we're suffering 00:01:47.40\00:01:48.84 under a global pandemic 00:01:48.87\00:01:52.74 COVID-19. 00:01:52.77\00:01:56.01 How truly deadly this is, on an individual basis, 00:01:56.04\00:01:59.68 we don't really know. 00:01:59.71\00:02:01.62 But one thing is undeniable, 00:02:01.65\00:02:03.89 at least, from direct deaths and deaths 00:02:03.92\00:02:06.96 were contributed by COVID with other co-morbidities 00:02:06.99\00:02:11.09 200,000 plus in the United States, 00:02:11.13\00:02:14.90 a million globally, and probably at least double 00:02:14.93\00:02:18.23 that before we're over. 00:02:18.27\00:02:19.60 It's significant. 00:02:19.63\00:02:20.97 And it's disrupted every element of life, 00:02:21.00\00:02:24.11 and in many ways, affected religious liberty 00:02:24.14\00:02:26.51 in most unpredictable and usually negative ways. 00:02:26.54\00:02:29.94 One thing that is hardly come to mention 00:02:29.98\00:02:33.68 is that in those countries 00:02:33.72\00:02:35.55 where there was already persecution 00:02:35.58\00:02:37.55 of religious minorities 00:02:37.59\00:02:38.92 and direct restriction of religious practice, 00:02:38.95\00:02:41.86 such as China, it's only gotten worse with COVID. 00:02:41.89\00:02:46.09 If for no other reason, 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.46 that undercover of this global distraction, 00:02:47.50\00:02:51.90 they've tightened the screws down. 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.80 For example, in China, they persecuted, 00:02:53.84\00:02:57.34 there's no other word for it, the minority Uighur population 00:02:57.37\00:03:01.61 who are mostly Muslims, and incidentally, 00:03:01.64\00:03:05.91 a number of them were part of the nonliving conspiracy. 00:03:05.95\00:03:08.78 So there's radical Islamic elements there. 00:03:08.82\00:03:11.85 But China has a problem with assimilating the Uighurs, 00:03:11.89\00:03:15.76 they're different culturally, 00:03:15.79\00:03:18.39 ethnically, and as far as ideology, 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.16 they're not hardcore communists, 00:03:21.20\00:03:22.73 they are Muslim religionists. 00:03:22.76\00:03:25.63 And so China has really restricted them 00:03:25.67\00:03:28.24 and castrated them in massive numbers, 00:03:28.27\00:03:31.84 as many as 1 to 3 million of the figures that I see. 00:03:31.87\00:03:36.18 And the internment problem with the Uighurs is merged 00:03:36.21\00:03:39.88 with what we've known for some time 00:03:39.91\00:03:42.18 that in Chinese prisons, 00:03:42.22\00:03:44.29 there's basically a business of harvesting organs 00:03:44.32\00:03:47.82 and basically organs and human body parts for sale. 00:03:47.86\00:03:53.36 And it's gotten so bad that in China, 00:03:53.40\00:03:56.13 they coordinate the executions, with the orders for organs. 00:03:56.16\00:04:01.20 Sometimes people get condemned and given the rough justice 00:04:01.24\00:04:06.54 just because there's an immediate need 00:04:06.57\00:04:08.24 for certain organs. 00:04:08.28\00:04:09.61 I've read well-documented articles 00:04:09.64\00:04:11.71 in national newspapers. 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.02 I remember Harper's Magazine was one 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.12 that had an in-depth article 00:04:16.15\00:04:18.39 about how they were harvesting organs 00:04:18.42\00:04:21.89 from still warm prisoners, including a man that defected 00:04:21.92\00:04:26.56 who his job was to take the skin 00:04:26.59\00:04:29.86 of a still-warm prisoner who'd been executed. 00:04:29.90\00:04:33.97 You know, skin grafts are in great demand. 00:04:34.00\00:04:36.30 So I want to read something that I read recently 00:04:36.34\00:04:40.04 that refers to this. 00:04:40.08\00:04:41.41 It is a true religious liberty aspect 00:04:41.44\00:04:44.21 to what's going on. 00:04:44.25\00:04:45.81 But it's a little deeper than 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.18 just denying religious liberty rights. 00:04:47.22\00:04:49.52 It's something that has even larger implications 00:04:49.55\00:04:52.92 for civil and religious liberty. 00:04:52.95\00:04:54.76 It's the commoditization of human life. 00:04:54.79\00:04:59.09 And that's no more evident than 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.33 in the Chinese communist regime. 00:05:01.36\00:05:06.80 Now right there that history is sepia colored 00:05:06.84\00:05:10.07 and correctly distant for most of us. 00:05:10.11\00:05:13.54 If any of us think on the past at all. 00:05:13.58\00:05:16.38 I can still remember my own shock. 00:05:16.41\00:05:18.81 Some years ago after I had regale the committee group 00:05:18.85\00:05:22.22 with my memories of the Vietnam War, 00:05:22.25\00:05:25.15 an era all too real in my memory. 00:05:25.19\00:05:28.72 One of the design assistants looked at me blankly 00:05:28.76\00:05:32.43 I wasn't born then he started 00:05:32.46\00:05:35.93 what was made me be lie to him. 00:05:35.96\00:05:38.87 You know, me lie for those that don't remember 00:05:38.90\00:05:41.30 that was when an American contingent 00:05:41.34\00:05:43.84 operating under skill but suggestive orders, 00:05:43.87\00:05:48.34 just butchered an entire village 00:05:48.38\00:05:50.38 of innocent villages. 00:05:50.41\00:05:52.75 And what was me lie to him nice I wondered. 00:05:52.78\00:05:55.42 Anti-war protests if he'd ever heard of them 00:05:55.45\00:05:58.49 could only be images 00:05:58.52\00:05:59.99 of close crop bell-bottomed youthful peak, 00:06:00.02\00:06:04.29 a thing that is passed of which they are unmoved 00:06:04.33\00:06:08.46 to lift the reverend John Owens lament 00:06:08.50\00:06:10.63 to Parliament in the mid-1600s. 00:06:10.67\00:06:13.77 It's drifted away from the republican experiment 00:06:13.80\00:06:17.54 with godly rule in England. 00:06:17.57\00:06:20.51 Attila the Hun, the Black Death in Europe, the crusades, 00:06:20.54\00:06:25.05 and even the US Civil War have become abstractions 00:06:25.08\00:06:30.75 removed from reality 00:06:30.79\00:06:32.65 and without any linkage to present actions. 00:06:32.69\00:06:36.56 American Henry David Thoreau, 00:06:36.59\00:06:39.26 I hope you remember him or know who he was he of Walden Pond. 00:06:39.29\00:06:43.63 American Henry David Thoreau professed horror at the idea 00:06:43.67\00:06:47.27 that cable messages from Europe might enter as he put it 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.57 the grape flapping air of America 00:06:50.61\00:06:53.71 but mixed metaphors aside, 00:06:53.74\00:06:55.31 the curiosity factors was not factor 00:06:55.34\00:06:57.75 was not that high, even then. 00:06:57.78\00:07:01.52 I love history 00:07:01.55\00:07:02.88 and read and study as much of it as I can. 00:07:02.92\00:07:06.25 I might have my young friend's tabula rasa, 00:07:06.29\00:07:10.39 in other words blank, have first-hand experience 00:07:10.43\00:07:13.40 of something as recent as World War II 00:07:13.43\00:07:15.50 and the horrors it brought 00:07:15.53\00:07:17.00 to our technologically emergent world, 00:07:17.03\00:07:19.17 but I seek out the facts. 00:07:19.20\00:07:21.67 I find that unlike the mythology of history, 00:07:21.70\00:07:25.11 the reality is that the entire western world of the 1930s 00:07:25.14\00:07:30.91 was enamored with what they called eugenics 00:07:30.95\00:07:34.72 or the science of human genetic improvement. 00:07:34.75\00:07:39.05 The Germans may have bailed out the threat 00:07:39.09\00:07:41.69 from the onomantia or the underman 00:07:41.72\00:07:44.39 and champion their view of the Ubermensch, 00:07:44.43\00:07:47.30 the over man, the ruler, the superman, 00:07:47.33\00:07:50.47 but it was in the United States 00:07:50.50\00:07:54.04 that the poor people ran the risk of imposed 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.81 sterilization and lobotomization. 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.57 And it was to us 00:07:59.61\00:08:00.94 that the German officials came formally 00:08:00.98\00:08:04.28 before World War II 00:08:04.31\00:08:05.65 to learn the protocols of miscegenation laws. 00:08:05.68\00:08:09.05 No wonder the history books still have little appetite 00:08:09.08\00:08:13.05 to explain the systemic commoditization 00:08:13.09\00:08:18.19 of human beings in Germany during the 1930s 00:08:18.23\00:08:21.83 and Europe into the next decade. 00:08:21.86\00:08:24.93 As a young man, I was horrified to see photos 00:08:24.97\00:08:29.74 of piles of eyeglasses, gold teeth, 00:08:29.77\00:08:32.94 and shoes taken from concentration camp inmates 00:08:32.97\00:08:36.51 as they were prepping 00:08:36.54\00:08:38.15 for gassing or boiling down for soap. 00:08:38.18\00:08:41.65 It seemed purely malicious and sadistic, 00:08:41.68\00:08:45.69 but it actually was worse. 00:08:45.72\00:08:47.92 The Nazis in particular reduced humans, 00:08:47.96\00:08:50.73 especially their unwanted captives to basic value units. 00:08:50.76\00:08:56.67 Businesses using the slave labor 00:08:56.70\00:08:58.57 were charged a minimal 00:08:58.60\00:09:00.64 but specific amount that together 00:09:00.67\00:09:03.41 with the pillaging of personal goods 00:09:03.44\00:09:05.07 was designed to make 00:09:05.11\00:09:06.84 the whole operation self-funding. 00:09:06.88\00:09:09.64 Just like an animal slaughterhouse, 00:09:09.68\00:09:11.61 each particle, fiber, and hide was used. 00:09:11.65\00:09:15.78 The state saw not persons 00:09:15.82\00:09:18.55 but units of cost and income. 00:09:18.59\00:09:22.09 But that was yesterday. 00:09:22.12\00:09:24.39 And many choose not to remember yesterday or at least, 00:09:24.43\00:09:28.76 not easily invoke such times 00:09:28.80\00:09:30.87 when reacting to periodic horrors, 00:09:30.90\00:09:33.44 such as the genocide 00:09:33.47\00:09:34.84 in the Balkans and Rwanda or the Middle East. 00:09:34.87\00:09:39.71 Horrors of blood they surely were 00:09:39.74\00:09:42.71 but not so parallel to the commoditization 00:09:42.74\00:09:46.11 that operated less from bloodlust 00:09:46.15\00:09:48.52 than from the depersonalized business policy of the times. 00:09:48.55\00:09:53.52 There is an echo of those smokestack days today, 00:09:53.56\00:09:57.43 however, it is a situation of several decades, 00:09:57.46\00:10:01.36 and yet still largely ignored by the West. 00:10:01.40\00:10:05.20 China has officially 00:10:05.23\00:10:06.74 some 1.5 million detainees in prison camps. 00:10:06.77\00:10:11.27 This is a large number 00:10:11.31\00:10:13.14 but actually lower than the total in US prisons. 00:10:13.17\00:10:16.34 What makes these camps of special interest 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.78 is the makeup of their population, 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.15 a very high percentage of practices of Falun Gong. 00:10:21.18\00:10:26.49 Largely unknown in the West or ignored 00:10:26.52\00:10:28.99 as their representatives routinely pass 00:10:29.02\00:10:31.06 that appeals for help at public gatherings. 00:10:31.09\00:10:33.66 This group is as large as 70 million in China. 00:10:33.70\00:10:37.17 While the movement is a modern reiteration 00:10:37.20\00:10:39.33 of Buddhist traditions that combine meditation, 00:10:39.37\00:10:42.20 moral philosophy, and exercise, 00:10:42.24\00:10:43.84 its mere size is seen as a threat 00:10:43.87\00:10:46.11 by the Chinese government. 00:10:46.14\00:10:47.84 Persecution has been severe. 00:10:47.88\00:10:50.08 Another significant element in the prisons 00:10:50.11\00:10:52.68 comes from what I shared earlier, 00:10:52.71\00:10:54.85 the Muslim Uighur ethnic group who are in severe conflict 00:10:54.88\00:10:58.29 with the state largely for their faith. 00:10:58.32\00:11:01.69 And of course, we cannot dismiss the reality 00:11:01.72\00:11:04.89 of many Christian detainees. 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.76 While Christianity is allowed and administered in China 00:11:07.80\00:11:10.90 under what they call the three self-patriotic movement, 00:11:10.93\00:11:15.20 any deviation from this control, 00:11:15.24\00:11:17.41 such as private house meetings is severely punished. 00:11:17.44\00:11:20.78 And China does control. 00:11:20.81\00:11:22.94 I, not long ago 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.31 was talking to a North American church member 00:11:24.35\00:11:28.42 who has a ministry in China and she said that 00:11:28.45\00:11:31.55 when they were driving there, 00:11:31.59\00:11:32.92 as they drove along the roads every hundred yards 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.52 or so there were sensors that photograph them 00:11:35.56\00:11:38.13 and the lights were going off. 00:11:38.16\00:11:39.76 And if they turned off on a side road 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.83 to go to one of these meetings, 00:11:41.86\00:11:43.20 again, they would know exactly where they turned 00:11:43.23\00:11:45.63 and could be tracked. 00:11:45.67\00:11:48.10 We're on the way to doing the same thing. 00:11:48.14\00:11:49.77 But electronics offers the ability of a control state 00:11:49.80\00:11:53.17 to know everything you do and everywhere you go. 00:11:53.21\00:11:58.55 Study after study and various commissions, 00:11:58.58\00:12:01.98 and congressional inquiries have looked 00:12:02.02\00:12:03.99 into the shocking abuse in these Chinese prisons. 00:12:04.02\00:12:08.46 These for-profit prisons, 00:12:08.49\00:12:10.59 prisoners are routinely tested and evaluated 00:12:10.63\00:12:13.40 on the health of their organs, 00:12:13.43\00:12:15.70 markedly organs only not general health. 00:12:15.73\00:12:19.23 Organs are systematically harvested from the prisoners. 00:12:19.27\00:12:22.70 This is not denied. 00:12:22.74\00:12:24.74 The discussion is only on the scale. 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.78 But the billion-dollar 00:12:27.81\00:12:29.14 organ donation business in China 00:12:29.18\00:12:30.85 involves very few private donors. 00:12:30.88\00:12:33.21 So the math on prisoner donation is damning. 00:12:33.25\00:12:36.85 Stories have come out via defectors and informants 00:12:36.89\00:12:39.75 of on demand extraction on living victims 00:12:39.79\00:12:43.53 of people skinned alive, have executions performed 00:12:43.56\00:12:46.70 to fulfill specific organ needs. 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.60 China may be communist in ideological identity, 00:12:49.63\00:12:52.57 but it has embraced and all that capitalism 00:12:52.60\00:12:55.77 that goes a long way toward describing 00:12:55.80\00:12:58.44 this profiteering approach to persecution. 00:12:58.47\00:13:01.88 The question is, how will people of conscience 00:13:01.91\00:13:05.35 in the West react to this 00:13:05.38\00:13:07.45 and do what they can do in the practice? 00:13:07.48\00:13:10.42 The last US administration famously declared publicly 00:13:10.45\00:13:15.26 that they were delinking civil rights discussions 00:13:15.29\00:13:18.36 from trade talks. 00:13:18.39\00:13:20.66 At present, we are in a trade war with China. 00:13:20.70\00:13:23.60 But it seems all about trade 00:13:23.63\00:13:25.27 and not contingent on addressing 00:13:25.30\00:13:28.04 a crying crisis like this. 00:13:28.07\00:13:32.24 I didn't write it at the time. 00:13:32.27\00:13:34.41 But I remember some years ago, I was almost as troubled 00:13:34.44\00:13:38.51 by the fact that there was a booming market 00:13:38.55\00:13:41.12 in private prisons in the United States. 00:13:41.15\00:13:44.12 The government may incarcerate you. 00:13:44.15\00:13:46.99 But your internment may be in a for-profit prison system 00:13:47.02\00:13:52.69 that gets a certain amount per prisoner from the state 00:13:52.73\00:13:56.56 and under guidelines, perhaps not as tight 00:13:56.60\00:14:00.17 as they might be from the state runs the prison. 00:14:00.20\00:14:03.41 And there was an experiment that was loaded from the top, 00:14:03.44\00:14:08.98 the highest levels on down 00:14:09.01\00:14:10.91 in US prisons run by Christians, 00:14:10.95\00:14:14.05 where they would try to treat prisoners as objects 00:14:14.08\00:14:19.92 to be reoriented toward faith practices. 00:14:19.95\00:14:24.03 That's an interesting dynamic. 00:14:24.06\00:14:26.49 We'll take a break now and finish this discussion 00:14:26.53\00:14:29.90 and this presentation in a few moments. 00:14:29.93\00:14:31.80 But stay with me because there's a lot at stake 00:14:31.83\00:14:34.80 in this commoditization of a human being. 00:14:34.84\00:14:37.84
