Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, I was reading from an interesting article 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.17 in Liberty Magazine from 1914, 00:00:06.20\00:00:09.30 on the Constitution. 00:00:09.34\00:00:12.97 And as you would, 00:00:13.01\00:00:14.48 I think, expect Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:00:14.51\00:00:18.25 putting this together 00:00:18.28\00:00:19.61 were very concerned for the protection 00:00:19.65\00:00:22.02 of Christianity 00:00:22.05\00:00:23.39 and with an awareness of the Seventh-day Sabbath, 00:00:23.42\00:00:25.95 very concerned to protect that right, 00:00:25.99\00:00:28.96 that doctrinal uniqueness, 00:00:28.99\00:00:31.76 and not allow the Constitution 00:00:31.79\00:00:33.93 or those claiming to act within it 00:00:33.96\00:00:37.37 to be used to advance 00:00:37.40\00:00:39.87 or restrict any religious practice. 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.50 So let me just share a few more paragraphs. 00:00:42.54\00:00:44.91 It says, "The observance of a day of rest 00:00:44.94\00:00:46.68 is a religious act. 00:00:46.71\00:00:48.94 It is a duty between the individual and God 00:00:48.98\00:00:51.48 and this duty can be directed only by," 00:00:51.51\00:00:54.42 and they're quoting here, 00:00:54.45\00:00:55.78 "reason and conviction not by force or violence. 00:00:55.82\00:00:59.65 As a free people that says we should view with alarm, 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.52 the fact that Congress 00:01:02.56\00:01:03.89 is continually besieged with petitions 00:01:03.93\00:01:06.96 requesting the enactment of laws 00:01:07.00\00:01:09.33 favoring the observance of Sunday." 00:01:09.36\00:01:13.67 Liberty Magazine itself goes back to 1906, 00:01:13.70\00:01:18.87 I think was the year that we began publishing, 00:01:18.91\00:01:21.18 I wasn't alive then. 00:01:21.21\00:01:23.61 Began publishing Liberty Magazine. 00:01:23.65\00:01:26.08 But it was a continuum of a periodical 00:01:26.11\00:01:28.78 that was previously named the Sentinel, 00:01:28.82\00:01:32.15 Sentinel of Liberty, 00:01:32.19\00:01:34.06 edited by Alonzo T. Jones. 00:01:34.09\00:01:36.49 And in 1888, 00:01:36.52\00:01:39.93 he and the Adventist Church 00:01:39.96\00:01:41.83 and a few other civil organizations 00:01:41.86\00:01:45.73 and a few churches objected to a proposal 00:01:45.77\00:01:48.57 before the US Senate for a national Sunday law. 00:01:48.60\00:01:53.04 And it nearly passed. 00:01:53.07\00:01:54.74 And you can go online and read it. 00:01:54.78\00:01:56.38 It's quite horrific, 00:01:56.41\00:01:57.75 because it mandates 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.25 the ceasing of all secular activity 00:01:59.28\00:02:03.82 under punishment of law, 00:02:03.85\00:02:06.45 and directs all people 00:02:06.49\00:02:08.12 to worship the Lord on that day. 00:02:08.16\00:02:09.76 That's a Sunday law. 00:02:09.79\00:02:12.43 Might have given some sort of 00:02:12.46\00:02:14.86 sanctimonious religiosity to the state, 00:02:14.90\00:02:17.23 but it was against the principles of civil 00:02:17.27\00:02:19.93 and religious freedom. 00:02:19.97\00:02:21.97 And that was defeated at that time, 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.37 but it really laid its mark on the Sentinel of Liberty, 00:02:24.41\00:02:29.44 and then Liberty Magazine as it began, 00:02:29.48\00:02:31.71 and at various time since there have been attempts. 00:02:31.75\00:02:35.65 And there are continuing organizations 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.55 that have that as they go. 00:02:38.59\00:02:39.92 I can remember many years ago now in my life, 00:02:39.95\00:02:43.02 but not long in the great stream 00:02:43.06\00:02:45.39 of Liberty Magazine. 00:02:45.43\00:02:46.83 But maybe about 15 years ago, 00:02:46.86\00:02:50.83 I sat next to a major conservative leader, 00:02:50.87\00:02:53.80 I won't name him, 00:02:53.84\00:02:55.17 and I have great respect for him, 00:02:55.20\00:02:56.54 but a leader in the conservative movement. 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.44 Had a media ministry and so on. 00:02:59.47\00:03:01.28 And he said to me, 00:03:01.31\00:03:02.64 when I introduced myself, he says, 00:03:02.68\00:03:04.01 "You Seventh-day Adventists think that 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.41 I'm bringing the Sunday law, don't you?" 00:03:05.45\00:03:08.18 And I said, "No, I don't think that you are, 00:03:08.22\00:03:11.39 but I said much of what you're involved with 00:03:11.42\00:03:13.92 has that as its natural consequence." 00:03:13.96\00:03:17.03 And there are some 00:03:17.06\00:03:19.16 who openly are pushing for both Sunday legislation 00:03:19.19\00:03:23.13 and other legislation, 00:03:23.16\00:03:25.17 slated forms of their religious doctrinal outline. 00:03:25.20\00:03:28.84 And so we need to guard against that, 00:03:28.87\00:03:30.27 not because they're bad people, but they're misguided. 00:03:30.31\00:03:33.88 And if the goal of religion is to change the hearts of men, 00:03:33.91\00:03:38.78 if the goal of religion is to prepare the way 00:03:38.81\00:03:40.92 for the kingdom, eternal kingdom of the Lord, 00:03:40.95\00:03:43.62 surely it should be the most logical thing 00:03:43.65\00:03:46.32 that coercion of unregenerate people 00:03:46.35\00:03:50.76 is hardly the way to go about it. 00:03:50.79\00:03:53.23 It's using the devil's methods in a vain hope 00:03:53.26\00:03:56.50 that it will bring about the kingdom of God. 00:03:56.53\00:04:00.17 It says here, 00:04:00.20\00:04:01.54 continuing on this article, 00:04:01.57\00:04:04.44 it says, "Sunday is not a civil but a religious institution 00:04:04.47\00:04:08.04 and is therefore beyond the purview 00:04:08.08\00:04:09.78 of the civil power. 00:04:09.81\00:04:11.25 Let Congress legislate but once upon the question, 00:04:11.28\00:04:14.58 and the step will be followed by disastrous consequences." 00:04:14.62\00:04:18.62 And then quoting from a Senate report in 1829, 00:04:18.65\00:04:21.99 it says, 00:04:22.02\00:04:23.36 "Let the national legislature once perform an act, 00:04:23.39\00:04:26.59 which involves the decision of a religious controversy 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.30 and it will have passed its legitimate bounds. 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.77 The precedent will then be established 00:04:31.80\00:04:33.64 and the foundation laid 00:04:33.67\00:04:35.74 for the usurpation of the divine prerogative 00:04:35.77\00:04:38.84 in this country, 00:04:38.87\00:04:40.21 which has been the desolating scourge 00:04:40.24\00:04:42.44 of the fairest portions of the old world." 00:04:42.48\00:04:44.95 Should be obvious 00:04:44.98\00:04:46.31 that the experiment of religious coercion 00:04:46.35\00:04:48.38 didn't work. 00:04:48.42\00:04:49.75 And not just the Spanish Inquisition 00:04:49.78\00:04:51.95 but other attempts. 00:04:51.99\00:04:53.66 You know, the St. Bartholomew's Day 00:04:53.69\00:04:56.76 Massacre in France comes to mind, 00:04:56.79\00:04:59.29 horrible things 00:04:59.33\00:05:00.70 where church and state were mixed 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.83 and bloodshed followed. 00:05:02.86\00:05:06.27 The absence, 00:05:06.30\00:05:07.64 and this is another quote from a book Church and State, 00:05:07.67\00:05:11.57 says, "The absence of the names of God and Christ 00:05:11.61\00:05:14.04 in a purely political and legal document 00:05:14.08\00:05:16.71 no more proves denial or irreverence 00:05:16.75\00:05:20.02 than the absence of those names in a mathematical treatise, 00:05:20.05\00:05:23.22 or the statutes of a bank or railroad corporation." 00:05:23.25\00:05:26.35 Much has been made of that, 00:05:26.39\00:05:27.82 both the absence and the slight 00:05:27.86\00:05:30.59 in the year of our Lord 00:05:30.63\00:05:32.03 like that religious acknowledgement. 00:05:32.06\00:05:36.53 It says, "The title holiness does not make the Pope of Rome 00:05:36.56\00:05:40.24 any holier than he is. 00:05:40.27\00:05:42.54 And it makes the contradiction only 00:05:42.57\00:05:44.27 more glaring in such characters as Alexander VI." 00:05:44.31\00:05:48.14 It says, "We may go further and say 00:05:48.18\00:05:49.78 that the Constitution not only contains nothing 00:05:49.81\00:05:52.05 which is irreligious or un-Christian, 00:05:52.08\00:05:54.92 but it's Christian in substance, 00:05:54.95\00:05:56.45 they're not informed, 00:05:56.48\00:05:57.82 it is pervaded by the spirit of justice 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.22 and humanity." 00:06:00.26\00:06:01.69 Things that are being argued about 00:06:01.72\00:06:04.69 and demonstrated for, 00:06:04.73\00:06:06.70 as never before in the United States, 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.96 which are Christian, it says, these are Christian principles. 00:06:09.00\00:06:11.60 The First Amendment could not have originated 00:06:11.63\00:06:14.30 in any pagan or Mohammedan country, 00:06:14.34\00:06:16.60 but presupposes 00:06:16.64\00:06:17.97 Christian civilization and culture. 00:06:18.01\00:06:20.44 Christianity alone has taught men 00:06:20.48\00:06:23.21 to respect the sacredness of the human personality, 00:06:23.24\00:06:26.72 as made in the image of God and redeemed by Christ, 00:06:26.75\00:06:30.32 and to protect its rights and privileges, 00:06:30.35\00:06:32.72 including the freedom of worship 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.76 against the encroachments of the temporal power, 00:06:34.79\00:06:37.93 and the absolutism of the state." 00:06:37.96\00:06:40.86 You know, these are powerful words 00:06:40.90\00:06:42.46 from the past. 00:06:42.50\00:06:43.83 And, you know, I want to repeat these now, 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.57 because we have forgotten them. 00:06:46.60\00:06:48.57 These were the trumpet cries, 00:06:48.60\00:06:52.54 through most of the history of the United States, 00:06:52.57\00:06:56.11 reiterating these with the Constitution 00:06:56.14\00:06:59.35 as evidence, 00:06:59.38\00:07:01.22 that of itself 00:07:01.25\00:07:03.18 that it was not to meddle in religion. 00:07:03.22\00:07:07.26 Let me conclude with one more statement here 00:07:07.29\00:07:09.56 that I saw earlier, which was good. 00:07:09.59\00:07:11.56 It says, "The publishers of liberty protest 00:07:11.59\00:07:15.16 against Congress making any law respecting religion." 00:07:15.20\00:07:20.40 In other words, we uphold the First Amendment. 00:07:20.44\00:07:22.70 "They do this because they are Christians, 00:07:22.74\00:07:24.87 because they love religion in the nation, 00:07:24.91\00:07:27.11 and do not wish to see the ship of state 00:07:27.14\00:07:29.78 wrecked upon the rocks 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.15 of the union of church and state. 00:07:31.18\00:07:33.21 Let our constitutional liberties remain 00:07:33.25\00:07:35.95 in violet. 00:07:35.98\00:07:39.49 That's worth remembering now. 00:07:39.52\00:07:43.22 I intend in another program to talk about 00:07:43.26\00:07:45.83 the dynamic that's emerged 00:07:45.86\00:07:47.30 during the COVID emergency 00:07:47.33\00:07:50.37 where it's not said in so many words, 00:07:50.40\00:07:54.24 but given that, 00:07:54.27\00:07:56.04 to gather together in churches 00:07:56.07\00:07:58.27 is to sort of invite contagion. 00:07:58.31\00:08:01.04 And the syllogism has drawn that 00:08:01.08\00:08:03.35 therefore religion is antithetical 00:08:03.38\00:08:05.48 to the survival of a free society. 00:08:05.51\00:08:07.52 It's not good. It's not a good dynamic at all. 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.79 Religion is important to our personal life. 00:08:10.82\00:08:14.32 And it was so important 00:08:14.36\00:08:15.72 that the Constitution was designed to protect it 00:08:15.76\00:08:18.59 by leaving it alone, 00:08:18.63\00:08:20.80 not restricting it, 00:08:20.83\00:08:22.16 no law, respecting religion, 00:08:22.20\00:08:26.90 nor prevent the free exercise thereof. 00:08:26.94\00:08:30.31 I mean, that's a wonderful prescription 00:08:30.34\00:08:32.54 for continued religious freedom. 00:08:32.57\00:08:35.84 But how we will maintain that in the years ahead, 00:08:35.88\00:08:39.01 as we have religious diversity on a level that, 00:08:39.05\00:08:43.12 you know, we grant almost semi profit status 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.72 to the founders or the framers of the American Constitution, 00:08:45.75\00:08:49.66 but they were mere men. 00:08:49.69\00:08:51.13 I am sure they could never have imagined 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.83 the religious diversity 00:08:54.86\00:08:57.03 and, of course, the diversity of those who are informed 00:08:57.07\00:08:59.80 not by faith or tradition, but by "science," 00:08:59.83\00:09:04.71 which often means a sense of rationality 00:09:04.74\00:09:09.84 by people who are not rational, 00:09:09.88\00:09:12.61 nor always knowledgeable, 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.58 but cynical and suspicious of faith 00:09:14.62\00:09:17.99 absolutes that have come down to us. 00:09:18.02\00:09:20.19 You know how those men could have imagined that never. 00:09:20.22\00:09:24.36 We're in a stressful circumstance 00:09:24.39\00:09:26.73 for the very assumptions that formed the Constitution. 00:09:26.76\00:09:29.96 But we need to cling to that idea 00:09:30.00\00:09:33.30 of a separation of church and state, 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.47 and religion. 00:09:36.50\00:09:38.47 We can work itself out versus the power as Jesus said, 00:09:38.51\00:09:41.94 the powers of hell shall not prevail against it. 00:09:41.98\00:09:44.58 If there is faith on this earth 00:09:44.61\00:09:46.41 and Jesus worried that it would disappear, 00:09:46.45\00:09:48.78 it can take care of itself, 00:09:48.82\00:09:50.62 but let the state decide that it will either support 00:09:50.65\00:09:54.76 or worse oppose religion. 00:09:54.79\00:09:56.79 And either way, a great travesty is enacted. 00:09:56.83\00:09:59.96 It's a privilege for all of us to live in the United States 00:10:00.00\00:10:03.53 where more than most any country 00:10:03.57\00:10:05.67 in modern history, 00:10:05.70\00:10:07.44 the United States is enshrined a great reverence 00:10:07.47\00:10:10.51 for the practice of religious faith. 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.41 And it's worth remembering, 00:10:12.44\00:10:13.78 it is enshrined in the Constitution. 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.54 It is a dynamic of separation. 00:10:16.58\00:10:19.18 And it's so integrally tied to the very survival 00:10:19.21\00:10:23.05 of this great experiment 00:10:23.08\00:10:24.92 that Abraham Lincoln so extolled. 00:10:24.95\00:10:27.16 You know whether it will succeed, 00:10:27.19\00:10:29.06 we need to respect it. 00:10:29.09\00:10:30.53
