Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.72\00:00:30.53 This is the program 00:00:30.56\00:00:31.89 designed to bring you up to speed 00:00:31.93\00:00:33.40 and give you information 00:00:33.43\00:00:34.76 and understanding on religious liberty events 00:00:34.80\00:00:38.10 in the US and around the world. 00:00:38.13\00:00:40.37 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:40.40\00:00:44.37 a religious liberty journal 00:00:44.41\00:00:45.81 published for well over 100 years now 00:00:45.84\00:00:47.88 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:00:47.91\00:00:49.78 and distributed to many people in the community, 00:00:49.81\00:00:52.88 in particular, 00:00:52.91\00:00:54.38 politicians and leaders in government, 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.49 mayors and so on, 00:00:57.52\00:00:59.42 all around the US and indeed around the world. 00:00:59.45\00:01:03.46 I want to share some things with you today 00:01:03.49\00:01:05.23 that I think are very pertinent 00:01:05.26\00:01:06.83 to where we are in these tumultuous times, 00:01:06.86\00:01:12.33 very tumultuous worldwide, 00:01:12.37\00:01:13.80 but in particular, in the United States. 00:01:13.84\00:01:16.77 In the whole impeachment and election scenario, 00:01:16.81\00:01:20.84 many people are wondering just where this will go. 00:01:20.88\00:01:24.48 I discovered a book quite a few years ago, 00:01:24.51\00:01:27.58 when I was working back in my homeland of Australia, 00:01:27.62\00:01:30.92 at the publishing house in a little town 00:01:30.95\00:01:33.12 called Warburton, 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.32 this publishing house that's again been run 00:01:35.36\00:01:37.79 for over 100 years 00:01:37.83\00:01:39.96 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:40.00\00:01:41.33 and I used to sit there 00:01:41.36\00:01:42.70 editing different magazines and books on occasion, 00:01:42.73\00:01:47.40 on the second level, 00:01:47.44\00:01:49.20 and now and then I would go 00:01:49.24\00:01:50.94 into the library 00:01:50.97\00:01:52.31 and leave through some of the books 00:01:52.34\00:01:53.68 that they had 00:01:53.71\00:01:55.04 and I noticed on many of the books 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.08 that as I opened the pages, 00:01:57.11\00:02:00.08 a fine dust, a brown dust would fall out. 00:02:00.12\00:02:02.98 And then on some of the others, I saw that it was like silt, 00:02:03.02\00:02:06.12 layered up between the pages and I asked questions, 00:02:06.15\00:02:09.99 and I discovered that the nearby stream 00:02:10.03\00:02:13.29 had flooded in the mid 30s. 00:02:13.33\00:02:15.43 And the water would come up into the second story level, 00:02:15.46\00:02:19.00 a literal deluge, 00:02:19.03\00:02:20.90 almost an apocalypse for what they were doing. 00:02:20.94\00:02:23.61 And this one book that I discovered 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.47 was called The Christ We Forget. 00:02:25.51\00:02:28.54 And I've got it at home now. 00:02:28.58\00:02:31.21 And I've read and reread and just recently read it 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.65 and I noticed early on that it was written 00:02:34.68\00:02:39.35 by an English journalist and politician, 00:02:39.39\00:02:42.72 and of course the Christian, 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.76 written by this man at the end of World War I. 00:02:44.79\00:02:49.50 And today, even historians 00:02:49.53\00:02:52.07 and of course, Europeans talk of World War I 00:02:52.10\00:02:55.20 as the Great War. 00:02:55.24\00:02:57.34 Not the war to end all wars 00:02:57.37\00:02:59.04 that was thought so at the time, 00:02:59.07\00:03:00.51 but wars and rumors of wars till the end of time, 00:03:00.54\00:03:03.91 according to Jesus Christ. 00:03:03.95\00:03:06.65 But it was cataclysmic to society, to civilization. 00:03:06.68\00:03:11.05 And in the preface to his book, 00:03:11.09\00:03:12.75 I want to share with you just a few paragraphs, 00:03:12.79\00:03:15.99 he said this, before the war, 00:03:16.02\00:03:19.13 "It seemed almost unnecessary to find time for the Bible. 00:03:19.16\00:03:23.97 Many of us were making money. 00:03:24.00\00:03:26.53 Others were busily earning it." 00:03:26.57\00:03:28.30 Little irony there. 00:03:28.34\00:03:29.67 "Our children were getting on nicely at school. 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.44 Certainly there were grave evils, 00:03:32.47\00:03:35.04 like drink, and bitter social inequalities, 00:03:35.08\00:03:38.91 and rancorous political quarrels, 00:03:38.95\00:03:42.22 and reckless extravagances, 00:03:42.25\00:03:44.69 which gave us uneasy twinges of conscience. 00:03:44.72\00:03:49.16 But we drifted, in tens, hundreds of thousands, 00:03:49.19\00:03:52.59 from public worship. 00:03:52.63\00:03:54.30 We ceased to pray. 00:03:54.33\00:03:57.00 We quietly laid aside the Bible. 00:03:57.03\00:04:01.17 Then suddenly we were brought face to face 00:04:01.20\00:04:05.11 with facts which we had forgotten. 00:04:05.14\00:04:07.68 One of those facts was death, another was pain, 00:04:07.71\00:04:12.55 another was suspense, another was national duty, 00:04:12.58\00:04:17.52 another was suspense. 00:04:17.55\00:04:20.26 We learnt that life is not a game, 00:04:20.29\00:04:23.46 but a grim, 00:04:23.49\00:04:24.83 heroic combat between good and evil. 00:04:24.86\00:04:28.43 For this crisis," he says, 00:04:28.46\00:04:30.67 commenting on his observation, 00:04:30.70\00:04:32.47 "For this crisis, 00:04:32.50\00:04:33.84 we found that we were unprepared. 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.94 Men and women fled for refuge, in some cases, to spiritualism, 00:04:36.97\00:04:41.61 crystal-gazing, and fortune-telling. 00:04:41.64\00:04:44.28 Pleasure and romance 00:04:44.31\00:04:46.31 played their part as comforters. 00:04:46.35\00:04:50.35 Lives that had been frivolous were consecrated to war work. 00:04:50.39\00:04:56.42 And there was the growing splendor 00:04:56.46\00:04:57.99 of national unity and personal sacrifice. 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.86 Hopes of a better dawn have encouraged us. 00:05:00.90\00:05:04.53 We are sure that faith will return." 00:05:04.57\00:05:07.07 But then he says, "But faith in what?" 00:05:10.17\00:05:16.64 And at the end of his introduction, 00:05:16.68\00:05:19.58 he says, "We need a revival, a new birth of life, 00:05:19.61\00:05:24.52 a resurrection." 00:05:24.55\00:05:27.42 And he concludes by saying, 00:05:27.46\00:05:28.79 "We must all long for the time, when once more, 00:05:28.82\00:05:33.36 this same Jesus who died shall be known again among men, 00:05:33.40\00:05:40.10 not as a crucifix merely, or as a shadow, 00:05:40.14\00:05:44.27 but in all of His fullness of love, 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.84 of power, of wisdom, of suffering, and a victory. 00:05:46.88\00:05:51.38 Far, far happier would be both homes and hearts. 00:05:51.41\00:05:54.95 There would be more laughter amongst us as of children, 00:05:54.98\00:05:57.95 better pictures and nobler literature, 00:05:57.99\00:06:01.09 more wholesome pleasures, 00:06:01.12\00:06:02.96 and the grand outburst of missionary enterprise." 00:06:02.99\00:06:07.20 You know, that's an interesting little snapshot 00:06:07.23\00:06:11.10 of what it was like in England at the end of the Great War, 00:06:11.13\00:06:16.07 moral meltdown, 00:06:16.10\00:06:18.51 and the substitution unless I'm misreading him, 00:06:18.54\00:06:22.38 a substitution of a sense of nationalism, 00:06:22.41\00:06:26.01 and civil optimism for deep spirituality. 00:06:26.05\00:06:31.22 The same thing is in the process of happening, 00:06:31.25\00:06:33.76 certainly in the United States. 00:06:33.79\00:06:36.56 I think it's not just a religionist, 00:06:36.59\00:06:39.93 anyone with an understanding of history will see that, 00:06:39.96\00:06:43.06 that the old faiths not just Christianity, 00:06:43.10\00:06:47.67 but primarily Christianity, 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.14 but all the religious faiths are struggling 00:06:49.17\00:06:51.44 to assert themselves against the new secularity. 00:06:51.47\00:06:55.28 Science as it's often ban it even in discussion. 00:06:55.31\00:07:01.02 You know, we are a scientific people, 00:07:01.05\00:07:03.02 supposedly, we follow knowledge. 00:07:03.05\00:07:06.55 Like Tennyson said, like, like a star. 00:07:06.59\00:07:09.62 But in reality, 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.19 the modern man is not overly logical, 00:07:11.23\00:07:14.30 no more than ancient man. 00:07:14.33\00:07:16.46 And a lot of sciences ignored, as we've seen at the moment, 00:07:16.50\00:07:20.47 even by our leaders, 00:07:20.50\00:07:22.14 who should have a little more respect 00:07:22.17\00:07:24.31 for the most obvious rationality 00:07:24.34\00:07:27.88 of science. 00:07:27.91\00:07:29.24 In reality, we are drifting toward 00:07:29.28\00:07:32.18 a sort of a secular dream time, 00:07:32.21\00:07:38.89 when we forget the true faith of our fathers. 00:07:38.92\00:07:42.66 Many in the United States have seen this, 00:07:42.69\00:07:44.59 the so-called Christian Right are troubled mightily 00:07:44.63\00:07:47.90 by the decline of religion. 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.93 I listened recently on public radio 00:07:49.96\00:07:53.60 to the chief ethicist from the Southern Baptist, 00:07:53.64\00:07:59.31 discussing how it's affected his church 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.01 and he says, you know, 00:08:02.04\00:08:03.48 our church attendance is radically down. 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.55 And amazingly, even during the COVID disaster, 00:08:05.58\00:08:09.75 he says, many people have forsaken the church, 00:08:09.78\00:08:13.29 and he doesn't understand why because you would think, 00:08:13.32\00:08:16.02 in a time of stress, 00:08:16.06\00:08:17.39 people would reach for religion. 00:08:17.43\00:08:19.43 But, of course, they're not encouraged that way 00:08:19.46\00:08:21.23 with social distancing. 00:08:21.26\00:08:23.10 And the idea that to meet in churches 00:08:23.13\00:08:24.83 literally dangerous to your health. 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.47 But what we have seen and we'll see more of 00:08:27.50\00:08:31.17 is that those who are custodians 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.14 of historical religion in the United States, 00:08:34.18\00:08:37.95 and those who have 00:08:37.98\00:08:39.31 a political vision at the same time 00:08:39.35\00:08:41.38 are determined to somehow do what the author of that book, 00:08:41.42\00:08:46.42 The Christ We Forget was saying, 00:08:46.45\00:08:48.02 somehow, they want to reinsert religion into society. 00:08:48.06\00:08:53.63 Now, how do you do that? 00:08:53.66\00:08:55.46 The goal during the Vietnam War, 00:08:55.50\00:08:58.37 I remember very well, 00:08:58.40\00:08:59.73 since I was subject to the draft, 00:08:59.77\00:09:01.10 I watched it closely and they were always saying, 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.30 a battle for hearts and minds. 00:09:03.34\00:09:05.77 They mostly persuaded with napalm 00:09:05.81\00:09:08.04 and scorched earth policies. 00:09:08.08\00:09:10.65 But still it was indeed a battle for hearts and minds. 00:09:10.68\00:09:14.12 And the so-called religious right, 00:09:14.15\00:09:17.12 the moral majority, 00:09:17.15\00:09:20.92 those people that are anxious to advance faith in the country 00:09:20.96\00:09:25.09 have that same problem. 00:09:25.13\00:09:27.40 They see America slipping away as it were, 00:09:27.43\00:09:30.87 and how do you save it? 00:09:30.90\00:09:34.14 And I'm afraid that they will do 00:09:34.17\00:09:38.04 what has happened over and over again 00:09:38.07\00:09:39.64 in the past. 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.01 They will seek a legislative agenda 00:09:41.04\00:09:44.31 to require people to discover religion. 00:09:44.35\00:09:49.02 And when I talk about religious liberty, 00:09:49.05\00:09:51.95 I've told people over and over again, 00:09:51.99\00:09:53.39 there's a simple litmus test that you can apply 00:09:53.42\00:09:56.76 as to whether religious liberty is functioning. 00:09:56.79\00:09:59.79 If there is coercion involved, it is not religious freedom, 00:09:59.83\00:10:05.10 even if people are going through the motions 00:10:05.13\00:10:07.97 of religion and religious practice. 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.54 And so this is the great conundrum, 00:10:10.57\00:10:12.21 the great contradiction 00:10:12.24\00:10:14.61 that is facing the United States 00:10:14.64\00:10:15.98 at the moment. 00:10:16.01\00:10:17.35 You can read any number of articles 00:10:17.38\00:10:19.01 that point out that clearly the United States 00:10:19.05\00:10:22.55 and indeed the western world is in need of a moral renewal. 00:10:22.58\00:10:26.25 It's suffering a crisis of confidence. 00:10:26.29\00:10:29.59 You know, it's not the economy dropping 00:10:29.62\00:10:31.39 because of COVID. 00:10:31.43\00:10:32.76 It's not trade imbalances. 00:10:32.79\00:10:34.50 All of those things are rather symptomatic. 00:10:34.53\00:10:37.73 Even as this program began, with the technicians, 00:10:37.77\00:10:41.87 we were talking about, 00:10:41.90\00:10:43.41 you know, what's happening now 00:10:43.44\00:10:44.77 and, you know, where will this go and so on. 00:10:44.81\00:10:48.98 And what is obvious. 00:10:49.01\00:10:52.25 We were talking about too how civilizations come and go. 00:10:52.28\00:10:55.18 What is obvious to most any observer 00:10:55.22\00:10:58.52 is that the great American empire 00:10:58.55\00:11:01.26 for want of a better word, 00:11:01.29\00:11:02.72 this liberal guideposts 00:11:02.76\00:11:07.13 for much of the modern world is really floundering. 00:11:07.16\00:11:12.20 It can't openly say 00:11:12.23\00:11:13.57 that it wants to conquer the world, 00:11:13.60\00:11:15.07 it can't openly say that it wants to bring 00:11:15.10\00:11:18.37 a lifestyle to the rest of the world 00:11:18.41\00:11:19.91 because China and other wannabes now 00:11:19.94\00:11:22.31 are holding out the consumerist carrot 00:11:22.34\00:11:28.05 as much as the US. 00:11:28.08\00:11:29.98 We can't easily say 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.55 that we're trying to Christianize 00:11:31.59\00:11:33.96 the rest of the world, 00:11:33.99\00:11:35.32 that would be constitutionally inappropriate 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.13 and inaccurate about our society. 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.90 Something is missing. 00:11:40.93\00:11:43.97 Something is missing. 00:11:44.00\00:11:45.50 But we are clearly on a declining arc 00:11:45.53\00:11:50.14 as far as a coherent society. 00:11:50.17\00:11:53.74 And some of the evidences of that 00:11:53.78\00:11:56.61 are even social scientists in other parts of the world, 00:11:56.64\00:12:00.58 most famously, in Russia. 00:12:00.62\00:12:02.88 They're positing that the US is about to break apart. 00:12:02.92\00:12:06.09 I don't think so both personally 00:12:06.12\00:12:08.52 or as a matter of prophecy. 00:12:08.56\00:12:09.99 But it is a moment of truth and crisis. 00:12:10.03\00:12:13.53 Something must be done. 00:12:13.56\00:12:16.87 Stay with us. 00:12:16.90\00:12:18.23 And I'll come back shortly to continue this discussion 00:12:18.27\00:12:21.60 about where we are today 00:12:21.64\00:12:23.04 and maybe parallels to great crisis of the past 00:12:23.07\00:12:27.94 and what crisis lies ahead of us. 00:12:27.98\00:12:30.15
