Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.62\00:00:30.23 This is your program bringing news, views, 00:00:30.26\00:00:33.16 analysis up-to-date information 00:00:33.19\00:00:34.83 and sometimes even readings of editorials, 00:00:34.86\00:00:37.80 little key to what's coming on Religious Liberty. 00:00:37.83\00:00:40.50 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:40.54\00:00:44.47 And I'm sitting here alone without a guest. 00:00:44.51\00:00:48.08 Usually, there's a counterpoint guest on the other side, 00:00:48.11\00:00:52.15 but I'm here. 00:00:52.18\00:00:54.85 I don't know if it's the end 00:00:54.88\00:00:56.22 but well into the phenomenon 00:00:56.25\00:00:57.85 of the COVID-19 scare in the world 00:00:57.89\00:01:00.16 and in particular in the United States, 00:01:00.19\00:01:01.92 social distancing, stay at home orders, 00:01:01.96\00:01:04.99 restaurants closed 00:01:05.03\00:01:06.36 unless you're willing to eat in the... 00:01:06.39\00:01:09.80 up front on a table or as yesterday, 00:01:09.83\00:01:13.07 we went somewhere where they set us up 00:01:13.10\00:01:14.87 in sort of the grassy section next to the restaurant 00:01:14.90\00:01:19.87 that I don't even think they earned. 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.98 It's not normal life. 00:01:22.01\00:01:23.85 When this began, 00:01:23.88\00:01:25.21 I wrote my first editorial for the March issue. 00:01:25.25\00:01:28.85 Immediately after I traveled 00:01:28.88\00:01:33.36 in early March... 00:01:33.39\00:01:35.72 I'm sorry, this was for the January, February, 00:01:35.76\00:01:37.76 March, April, for the May issue, 00:01:37.79\00:01:39.96 immediately after traveling in March to Oregon, 00:01:40.00\00:01:44.73 and taking an airport through 00:01:44.77\00:01:48.44 Chicago, Los Angeles and Seattle. 00:01:48.47\00:01:51.51 I was traveling through the hotspots of contagion. 00:01:51.54\00:01:55.44 And I entitled the editorial contagion 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.48 and I want to share what hit me immediately, 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.18 and then if I have time, share something else 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.55 I wrote more recently on this phenomenon. 00:02:02.58\00:02:06.52 This is what I wrote. 00:02:06.55\00:02:07.89 "Back in early March, I was still traveling 00:02:07.92\00:02:11.13 far afield promoting religious liberty. 00:02:11.16\00:02:13.80 One of my last trips before social distancing 00:02:13.83\00:02:17.20 had me largely confined to home 00:02:17.23\00:02:19.23 and walks in my neighborhood 00:02:19.27\00:02:20.74 was to San Francisco, California. 00:02:20.77\00:02:23.67 Already there was a rising sense of social panic. 00:02:23.71\00:02:27.88 The airport was a little quieter than usual. 00:02:27.91\00:02:31.35 Many wore masks to hide their tight expressions. 00:02:31.38\00:02:35.22 Others like plovers nesting in the grass, 00:02:35.25\00:02:38.12 tried to hide in quieter corners 00:02:38.15\00:02:39.99 of the concourse waiting areas. 00:02:40.02\00:02:41.89 All paid good attention to the television monitors 00:02:41.92\00:02:45.53 and the escalating tiles of contagion. 00:02:45.56\00:02:49.63 At the motel in the screen in my room had the same cast, 00:02:49.66\00:02:54.84 to escape it in the sense of siege, 00:02:54.87\00:02:57.71 I took off on foot crossing the moat 00:02:57.74\00:02:59.91 of the hospitality district 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.14 and after under passing the freeway 00:03:02.18\00:03:05.01 arriving in the almost medieval back streets of the city. 00:03:05.05\00:03:10.99 All seemed normal enough, 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.35 although with the new awareness of threat, 00:03:12.39\00:03:14.56 I could see the hazard of jostling in the street 00:03:14.59\00:03:18.19 or waiting in line in crowded stores 00:03:18.23\00:03:20.50 for food likely topped with descending vapors. 00:03:20.53\00:03:24.87 So I decided to seek a quieter venue, 00:03:24.90\00:03:27.10 and a used bookstore seemed to fit that criteria. 00:03:27.14\00:03:30.67 It was quieter, confirming my view 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.58 that panic for most 00:03:33.61\00:03:35.21 does not necessarily lead to introspection. 00:03:35.24\00:03:38.68 I scanned the shelves, 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.05 looking for interest and bargains, 00:03:40.08\00:03:43.75 and quickly found both. 00:03:43.79\00:03:45.45 It was a fat paperback of 750 pages 00:03:45.49\00:03:48.69 and a price less than a dollar, 00:03:48.72\00:03:50.53 indicating a lack of reader interest. 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.93 The title jumped out at me however, 00:03:52.96\00:03:55.53 "The Coming Plague: 00:03:55.56\00:03:57.47 Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance." 00:03:57.50\00:04:01.77 I have been reading it ever since. 00:04:01.80\00:04:03.94 The 1984 tome, 00:04:03.97\00:04:05.51 the basis for a TBS documentary, 00:04:05.54\00:04:07.88 is incredibly close to a secular book of Revelation 00:04:07.91\00:04:12.35 in its specificity in predicting 00:04:12.38\00:04:15.08 what we are living through. 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.22 It documents the efforts of epidemiologists 00:04:17.25\00:04:19.85 and an array of scientists to combat 00:04:19.89\00:04:21.92 the veritable assembly line of possible pandemics unleashed 00:04:21.96\00:04:27.26 by changing world demographics 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.20 and the effects of climate change. 00:04:29.23\00:04:32.47 That was some weeks ago. 00:04:32.50\00:04:34.30 Now the United States 00:04:34.34\00:04:35.70 has more COVID-19 cases than China, 00:04:35.74\00:04:38.87 where the virus first appeared, 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.38 and New York is caught up 00:04:40.41\00:04:41.78 in a frightening exponential spiral 00:04:41.81\00:04:44.98 of infection and death. 00:04:45.01\00:04:46.55 For much of the population, normal life has ceased. 00:04:46.58\00:04:51.99 Empty grocery shelves reflect panic buying. 00:04:52.02\00:04:55.92 Empty streets are the Dow Jones proxy 00:04:55.96\00:04:58.46 for an economy in rewind. 00:04:58.49\00:05:01.06 Information on the crisis is everywhere, 00:05:01.10\00:05:04.03 but yet often contradictory and incomplete. 00:05:04.07\00:05:07.04 One online doctor, strain on his face 00:05:07.07\00:05:09.24 as he incongruously touches his face repeatedly, 00:05:09.27\00:05:12.31 says the most successful outcome 00:05:12.34\00:05:14.34 will be a mere 100,000 dead, 00:05:14.38\00:05:16.51 and by way we passed that already, 00:05:16.54\00:05:18.38 the worst-case scenario: many, many times that. 00:05:18.41\00:05:22.22 No wonder some news commentators, 00:05:22.25\00:05:24.32 reaching into the purple verbiage 00:05:24.35\00:05:26.09 of the Hindenburg tragedy 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.49 of a century ago, 00:05:27.52\00:05:28.86 keep using the word "apocalyptic." 00:05:28.89\00:05:31.26 That term, of course, means 00:05:31.29\00:05:33.09 "resembling the end of the world, 00:05:33.13\00:05:34.90 momentous or catastrophic," 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.17 but at root it means an evocation 00:05:37.20\00:05:39.30 of the biblical Apocalypse, 00:05:39.33\00:05:41.00 or Book of Revelation, 00:05:41.04\00:05:42.37 which does prophecy in some detail the final events 00:05:42.40\00:05:45.94 for this world. 00:05:45.97\00:05:47.58 People are beginning to wonder at it all. 00:05:47.61\00:05:50.41 I was in my backyard a few days ago, 00:05:50.45\00:05:52.78 trimming a dead tree, and the neighbor's wife 00:05:52.81\00:05:54.85 called across the fence to comment on the contagion. 00:05:54.88\00:05:58.82 "It almost seems, she said, 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.22 like one of the plagues of Revelation 00:06:00.26\00:06:02.09 at the end of the world," 00:06:02.12\00:06:04.19 perhaps testing what my reaction might be. 00:06:04.23\00:06:07.66 "Certainly the type of thing 00:06:07.70\00:06:09.03 we might expect at the end of time," 00:06:09.06\00:06:10.73 I said carefully. 00:06:10.77\00:06:12.17 "But it does not directly answer to the specific plagues 00:06:12.20\00:06:15.74 described in that Bible book." 00:06:15.77\00:06:18.51 The ancient Etruscans 00:06:18.54\00:06:20.41 had an interesting view of their history. 00:06:20.44\00:06:23.24 They divided it into 90-year blocks, 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.71 roughly equaling four generations, 00:06:25.75\00:06:28.18 and about as long as any human being could live. 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.95 The Romans picked up on the idea, 00:06:30.99\00:06:32.65 but lengthened it to 100 years and then 110 years, 00:06:32.69\00:06:35.79 calling it a saeculum: 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.39 the period when living memory failed 00:06:38.43\00:06:40.60 and human reactions tended to reset. 00:06:40.63\00:06:43.83 I think it interesting 00:06:43.87\00:06:45.20 that it is approximately 100 years 00:06:45.23\00:06:47.20 since a flu pandemic killed 675,000 Americans 00:06:47.24\00:06:51.67 and tens of millions worldwide. 00:06:51.71\00:06:53.91 We have been here before. 00:06:53.94\00:06:56.21 Of course, coming on the heels 00:06:56.24\00:06:57.85 of the generational killing of World War I, 00:06:57.88\00:07:00.62 the flu epidemic of 1918 blurred 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.25 into the general horror of the times 00:07:03.28\00:07:05.55 and the soon-to-come Great Depression. 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.86 Lest we forget! 00:07:07.89\00:07:09.92 Benjamin Franklin, 00:07:09.96\00:07:11.69 he of the Poor Richard's Almanack 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.43 and many pithy statements, 00:07:13.46\00:07:15.80 wrote in words variously reported 00:07:15.83\00:07:18.90 and generally repeated 00:07:18.93\00:07:20.27 as "They who are willing 00:07:20.30\00:07:22.67 to give up liberty for security, 00:07:22.70\00:07:25.34 deserve neither liberty nor security." 00:07:25.37\00:07:30.65 It is a lesson that we started to forget 00:07:30.68\00:07:33.08 after September 11 and that should be kept in mind 00:07:33.11\00:07:36.62 as we adopt draconian and uniformly accepted measures 00:07:36.65\00:07:41.02 to protect ourselves from 00:07:41.06\00:07:42.92 "the pestilence in darkness and the destruction at noonday" 00:07:42.96\00:07:47.86 as Psalm 91:6 puts it. 00:07:47.90\00:07:50.50 We have long since escaped the pestilences 00:07:50.53\00:07:53.84 that wiped out native peoples 00:07:53.87\00:07:55.50 in the New World and the Antipodes. 00:07:55.54\00:07:57.74 And the depredations 00:07:57.77\00:07:59.11 of the plague now reside quiescently 00:07:59.14\00:08:02.61 in history book footnotes 00:08:02.64\00:08:04.65 and weapons lab vial storage. 00:08:04.68\00:08:07.55 But we would do well to ponder 00:08:07.58\00:08:09.72 what accompanied the Black Death 00:08:09.75\00:08:11.15 as it scythed down as much as a quarter 00:08:11.19\00:08:14.19 or even a third of Europe's population. 00:08:14.22\00:08:17.13 Economic activity all but ceased 00:08:17.16\00:08:20.40 and farms ceased to function, leading to starvation 00:08:20.43\00:08:24.47 on a level approaching the plague itself. 00:08:24.50\00:08:27.04 Cannibalism, a repressed memory 00:08:27.07\00:08:29.20 now only hinted at in fairy tales, 00:08:29.24\00:08:31.81 was an ugly fact of a desperate time, 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.74 which had been preceded by decades of crop failure 00:08:34.78\00:08:38.51 and weather change, 00:08:38.55\00:08:39.88 suggesting that God had forgotten them. 00:08:39.91\00:08:42.25 Lawlessness and war followed 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.25 in the train of social meltdown. 00:08:44.29\00:08:47.36 I could not help but note that in the midst 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.59 of the COVID-19 troubles in the US, 00:08:49.62\00:08:51.46 there was news of another North Korean missile launch. 00:08:51.49\00:08:55.86 So much of our post-World War II peace 00:08:55.90\00:08:58.47 comes from the world's interconnectedness 00:08:58.50\00:09:00.67 binding nations to a realization 00:09:00.70\00:09:03.04 that they will lose more by war 00:09:03.07\00:09:04.87 than they could ever gain. 00:09:04.91\00:09:06.71 The collapse of the world economic order 00:09:06.74\00:09:08.64 might well remove that inhibition. 00:09:08.68\00:09:11.91 The Christian misreading of Scripture in the Middle Ages 00:09:11.95\00:09:15.68 regarding the Jews had long 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.49 since become a justification for civil suppression 00:09:17.52\00:09:21.12 in medieval Europe. 00:09:21.16\00:09:22.49 Now, with the panic of the plague, 00:09:22.52\00:09:24.86 it spilled over into gross acts of violence: 00:09:24.89\00:09:27.40 In Strasbourg, France, for example, 00:09:27.43\00:09:29.03 on Valentine's Day 1349, 1,000 Jews were burned alive. 00:09:29.06\00:09:34.50 Flagellants and religious heretics abounded. 00:09:34.54\00:09:37.61 For many it seemed the end of the world. 00:09:37.64\00:09:41.44 Even today, religious freedom is generally supported 00:09:41.48\00:09:45.71 but often an elusive thing. 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.58 It is not easily judged by society at large. 00:09:48.62\00:09:52.19 And it's worth remembering that efforts to restrict it 00:09:52.22\00:09:55.22 nearly always have broad support 00:09:55.26\00:09:57.53 and pass as a compelling societal 00:09:57.56\00:10:01.70 or governmental need. 00:10:01.73\00:10:04.07 We at best pray that human nature does not react 00:10:04.10\00:10:07.04 against itself as it did back then. 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.87 And yes, the scientifically led efforts 00:10:09.90\00:10:12.31 to limit our present pandemic seem well thought out. 00:10:12.34\00:10:16.38 And yes, the government is seemingly 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.58 acting with admirable respect for human life. 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.65 But whether our extreme measures will work, 00:10:22.68\00:10:25.49 and whether they will bring 00:10:25.52\00:10:26.86 other troubles in their train remains to be seen. 00:10:26.89\00:10:29.96 The medieval contagion brought 00:10:29.99\00:10:32.86 by the Black Death extended far beyond the dying time, 00:10:32.89\00:10:36.63 it likely will be the same today." 00:10:36.67\00:10:40.80 I wrote that early on in this pandemic 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.54 to really sort of prod people 00:10:43.57\00:10:47.21 with a little bit of an awareness 00:10:47.24\00:10:48.64 how this dynamic worked in the past. 00:10:48.68\00:10:50.95 I don't know. 00:10:50.98\00:10:52.31 No one can know whether this is anywhere near 00:10:52.35\00:10:55.42 even the flu pandemic of 1918, 00:10:55.45\00:10:59.69 or at the worst case 00:10:59.72\00:11:01.06 whether that could ever possibly be like 00:11:01.09\00:11:03.93 the Black Death of the Middle Ages, 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.59 I don't know. 00:11:06.63\00:11:07.96 And if this is not, we don't know 00:11:08.00\00:11:09.90 if the next one will be like it, 00:11:09.93\00:11:11.37 but we should know, 00:11:11.40\00:11:12.90 we should be somewhat aware of history 00:11:12.93\00:11:15.40 and of human nature, 00:11:15.44\00:11:16.91 and how religious liberty 00:11:16.94\00:11:18.94 and indeed civil liberties affair 00:11:18.97\00:11:22.14 in these sort of panics. 00:11:22.18\00:11:24.05 And I do believe the same dynamic is at work. 00:11:24.08\00:11:27.58 I do believe it very likely that we're suffering, 00:11:27.62\00:11:31.19 going to suffer some sort of economic collapse 00:11:31.22\00:11:34.22 at least, like we had in 2008, may be like we had in 1929, 00:11:34.26\00:11:39.66 or maybe even worse, 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.46 because we live in a house of cards. 00:11:41.50\00:11:44.90 Our modern life, wonderful as it is compared 00:11:44.93\00:11:48.60 to the poverty and rudeness 00:11:48.64\00:11:54.21 of the medieval era 00:11:54.24\00:11:55.58 where even the king, you know, 00:11:55.61\00:11:57.08 didn't have glass in his windows and, 00:11:57.11\00:12:00.32 you know, might have seemed great to be 00:12:00.35\00:12:01.68 a potentate then. 00:12:01.72\00:12:03.05 But they didn't live like 00:12:03.08\00:12:04.42 the poorest of the poor in a western country. 00:12:04.45\00:12:07.59 So it may seem great, 00:12:07.62\00:12:08.96 but we're headed into a time 00:12:08.99\00:12:12.23 perhaps of a reckoning when, 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.00 you know, our chips and our silicon, 00:12:15.03\00:12:17.13 and our thin barriers between us 00:12:17.17\00:12:20.37 and barbarism can disappear quite easily. 00:12:20.40\00:12:23.94 Very few people realize that 00:12:23.97\00:12:25.34 we're on the knife's edge, 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.71 even though it's a wonderful life, 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.81 just like flying in a plane. 00:12:28.84\00:12:30.65 It's 500-600-mile an hour, beautiful, slim, 00:12:30.68\00:12:34.38 shiny tube that it's barely thicker than the soda pop can, 00:12:34.42\00:12:37.95 you're carrying as much explosive gasoline 00:12:37.99\00:12:40.42 as you are passengers. 00:12:40.46\00:12:42.42 It's minus 50 or 70 degrees outside, 00:12:42.46\00:12:45.56 your tube is under pressure, it could explode at any moment. 00:12:45.59\00:12:49.36 The engines could cease functioning. 00:12:49.40\00:12:51.30 We hardly give a thought to it 00:12:51.33\00:12:52.73 because this is a wonderful jet set privilege. 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.70 And yet, you know, moments dislocation 00:12:55.74\00:12:58.21 and it's all a flaming massive debris. 00:12:58.24\00:13:02.98 In some ways, modern life is like that, 00:13:03.01\00:13:06.35 in some ways, and in many ways, 00:13:06.38\00:13:08.98 Bible prophecy shines through the human progress, 00:13:09.02\00:13:14.06 whether it's the Tower of Babel, 00:13:14.09\00:13:16.09 or the Twin Towers of New York, 00:13:16.12\00:13:19.23 or, you know, some sort of treaty 00:13:19.26\00:13:21.76 that we established, 00:13:21.80\00:13:23.13 it's not necessarily peace in our time. 00:13:23.16\00:13:25.50 In our time is always the moment of truth. 00:13:25.53\00:13:28.80 And I believe, well, we shouldn't panic, 00:13:28.84\00:13:32.61 and we should do whatever we can 00:13:32.64\00:13:34.74 in a responsible way to help our fellows. 00:13:34.78\00:13:37.81 We should be thinking introspectively, 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.22 how do I relate to this? 00:13:40.25\00:13:42.55 How will I use my faith 00:13:42.58\00:13:44.82 to traverse these difficult times? 00:13:44.85\00:13:47.89 Is it going to carry me through or will I be swept away 00:13:47.92\00:13:50.96 by the illusion of the time? 00:13:50.99\00:13:53.09 The Bible is very plain, it says, you know, 00:13:53.13\00:13:54.53 those before the flood, they ate and drink, 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.56 gave in marriage until they came 00:13:56.60\00:13:57.93 and swept them away. 00:13:57.97\00:14:00.10 I mean, maybe Jonah 00:14:00.14\00:14:02.57 was the only one and his family, 00:14:02.60\00:14:04.14 but it's likely others thought a little on it, 00:14:04.17\00:14:07.88 and yet didn't take advantage. 00:14:07.91\00:14:09.84 We've been given the privilege 00:14:09.88\00:14:11.35 I think in this case of a warning. 00:14:11.38\00:14:13.52 How do we follow up remains to be seen? 00:14:13.55\00:14:16.05 Stay with me. 00:14:16.08\00:14:17.42 I want to share something else after a break 00:14:17.45\00:14:19.35 that I'd written after some months very close 00:14:19.39\00:14:23.69 to where we are now. 00:14:23.73\00:14:25.23 We'll be back shortly. 00:14:25.26\00:14:26.59
