Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:29.06\00:00:30.59 This is a program as always designed 00:00:30.63\00:00:33.36 to make you think a little bit more deeply 00:00:33.40\00:00:36.43 about religious liberty 00:00:36.46\00:00:37.80 and perhaps understand some of the developments 00:00:37.83\00:00:40.57 taking place around us in the US and around the world. 00:00:40.60\00:00:43.77 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine. 00:00:43.81\00:00:48.21 And I have no guests on this program 00:00:48.24\00:00:50.05 as I usually do, 00:00:50.08\00:00:51.41 but I want to share some things with you. 00:00:51.45\00:00:53.68 For a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.05 religious liberty in some ways 00:00:55.08\00:00:58.39 really kicked off in the early days 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.69 in the late 1880s, 00:01:00.72\00:01:02.86 with a national move toward a Sunday law. 00:01:02.89\00:01:07.80 And Seventh-day Adventists 00:01:07.83\00:01:09.16 who had been studying prophecy in effect 00:01:09.20\00:01:10.57 that's how the group formed after the Millerite Movement 00:01:10.60\00:01:14.60 because of an expectation 00:01:14.64\00:01:15.97 through prophecy of the Lord's imminent return. 00:01:16.00\00:01:18.84 Millerites got the date wrong, 00:01:18.87\00:01:20.21 but it was the correct in time awareness. 00:01:20.24\00:01:23.91 And Seventh-day Adventists aware of prophecy 00:01:23.95\00:01:27.95 believed that their reading Revelation 00:01:27.98\00:01:30.12 that there would be a conflict over loyalty to God 00:01:30.15\00:01:32.42 and they saw the Sabbath worship 00:01:32.45\00:01:35.12 on God's day is the key issue at hand. 00:01:35.16\00:01:38.99 And I think there's increasing evidence 00:01:39.03\00:01:41.93 that that is likely to be the way 00:01:41.96\00:01:44.97 even in the United States we will go. 00:01:45.00\00:01:47.20 And in 1888, this national Sunday law movement 00:01:47.24\00:01:50.31 galvanized Seventh-day Adventists 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.17 with an expectation of an imminent time of trouble. 00:01:52.21\00:01:55.38 And the final reckoning with the forces 00:01:55.41\00:01:58.28 that were against worshiping God. 00:01:58.31\00:02:01.05 Let me just show you a few sentences 00:02:01.08\00:02:03.69 from the National Sunday rest bill proposal 00:02:03.72\00:02:06.92 that came before Congress. 00:02:06.96\00:02:09.12 It says, be it an, 00:02:09.16\00:02:10.49 this is Senate Bill number 2983, 00:02:10.53\00:02:12.93 introduced in the first session of the 50th Congress 00:02:12.96\00:02:15.46 by Senator H. W. Blair, May 21, 1888. 00:02:15.50\00:02:19.60 And it says, be it an, 00:02:19.63\00:02:20.97 a bill rather to secure to the people 00:02:21.00\00:02:23.20 the enjoyment of the first day of the week, 00:02:23.24\00:02:25.37 commonly known as the Lord's Day, 00:02:25.41\00:02:27.58 as a day of rest, 00:02:27.61\00:02:28.94 and to promote its observance as a day of religious worship. 00:02:28.98\00:02:32.78 And it's pretty unambiguous, that's the Sunday law. 00:02:32.81\00:02:34.98 And it says be it enacted, 00:02:35.02\00:02:36.92 that no person or corporation or the agent, 00:02:36.95\00:02:40.32 servant or employee of any personal corporation 00:02:40.36\00:02:43.32 shall perform or authorized to be performed 00:02:43.36\00:02:46.80 any secular work, labor or business 00:02:46.83\00:02:49.80 to the disturbance of others works of necessity, 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.27 mercy and humanity accepted, 00:02:52.30\00:02:53.97 nor shall any person engaged in any play, 00:02:54.00\00:02:56.71 game or amusement or recreation 00:02:56.74\00:02:59.71 to the disturbance of others on the first day of the week." 00:02:59.74\00:03:02.34 This is shades of the Taliban and their kite flying. 00:03:02.38\00:03:05.35 Nothing on the first day of the week, 00:03:05.38\00:03:07.85 commonly known as the Lord's Day 00:03:07.88\00:03:09.52 or during any part thereof in any territory, 00:03:09.55\00:03:11.85 district, vessel, 00:03:11.89\00:03:13.22 or place subject to the exclusive jurisdiction 00:03:13.25\00:03:16.12 of the United States. 00:03:16.16\00:03:17.53 Nor shall it be lawful for any person or corporation 00:03:17.56\00:03:20.90 to receive pay for labor or service 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.30 performed or rendered in violation of the section. 00:03:23.33\00:03:26.17 That's a Sunday law with unambiguously religious 00:03:26.20\00:03:30.07 shut down, go to church. 00:03:30.11\00:03:33.38 Thankfully, it was restricted. 00:03:33.41\00:03:35.81 But again, this is the talisman that we carry forward 00:03:35.84\00:03:40.02 that will be the unique sign 00:03:40.05\00:03:41.82 of an opposition to God's principles 00:03:41.85\00:03:45.75 because even though worship on the Lord's Day, 00:03:45.79\00:03:48.99 it happens to be the seventh day, 00:03:49.02\00:03:50.76 Saturday Sabbath. 00:03:50.79\00:03:53.09 Worship on the Lord's Day is something good 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.73 but to compel by civil law is wrong. 00:03:54.76\00:03:58.87 And I often tell people that compulsion, 00:03:58.90\00:04:01.90 if there's a compulsion in it, 00:04:01.94\00:04:03.27 you know that it's not religious liberty. 00:04:03.30\00:04:05.61 Even to compel people do a good thing 00:04:05.64\00:04:07.71 against their conscience and the used force is wrong. 00:04:07.74\00:04:10.55 God didn't do it to Adam and Eve in Eden, 00:04:10.58\00:04:12.71 and He will never do it. 00:04:12.75\00:04:15.38 Not too long ago, actually five years ago, 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.65 the Pope of Rome came and spoke to the US Congress, 00:04:17.69\00:04:21.46 was well received 00:04:21.49\00:04:22.82 by a formally dominantly Protestant society, 00:04:22.86\00:04:26.70 find to be respectful for him, 00:04:26.73\00:04:28.46 but you know, he was lauded as a great leader 00:04:28.50\00:04:31.37 and things that Protestants would never have said directly. 00:04:31.40\00:04:35.87 And he spoke well enough, 00:04:35.90\00:04:37.81 but behind his speech was a document 00:04:37.84\00:04:40.24 called Laudato si'. 00:04:40.28\00:04:43.31 Praise be to Thee. 00:04:43.35\00:04:44.68 And I've spoken on this program in detail 00:04:44.71\00:04:47.52 about that document. 00:04:47.55\00:04:48.88 It's an environmental document 00:04:48.92\00:04:50.55 that says our survival as a people depend on 00:04:50.59\00:04:53.79 or as a human race depend on saving the environment. 00:04:53.82\00:04:57.89 And then he goes further 00:04:57.93\00:04:59.26 and says that part of that saving 00:04:59.29\00:05:01.60 is to recognize the rhythms inscribed in nature. 00:05:01.63\00:05:04.17 And it says along those lines 00:05:04.20\00:05:05.70 worship on the seventh day Sabbath, 00:05:05.73\00:05:07.90 but later he applies it to Sunday. 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.21 So it's quite obvious that from a point of Rome, 00:05:10.24\00:05:13.98 which is a political religious power, 00:05:14.01\00:05:16.48 worship on the seventh, 00:05:16.51\00:05:18.05 on the Sabbath day is vital and will be encouraged, 00:05:18.08\00:05:22.45 and in other documents that implies enforced. 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.82 I came back from hearing that speech. 00:05:25.85\00:05:28.66 We had a meeting with our board. 00:05:28.69\00:05:30.96 And I was sort of full of the topic 00:05:30.99\00:05:32.56 and a couple of the lawyers they weren't named 00:05:32.59\00:05:34.70 because they're being used illustratively here 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.33 to damn them. 00:05:37.37\00:05:38.70 They sort of mocked me and they said, "Big deal. 00:05:38.73\00:05:41.10 He's not bringing the Sunday law." 00:05:41.14\00:05:44.21 And I said, "Well, I didn't say 00:05:44.24\00:05:45.87 that the pope is bringing the Sunday law." 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.14 And Great Controversy does not say that directly. 00:05:48.18\00:05:51.51 It's that Rome has been advancing Sunday law 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.82 for most of its history, 00:05:54.85\00:05:56.18 and often persecuting those who didn't keep it 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.92 and we are told and believe that at the end of time 00:05:58.95\00:06:02.59 a resurgent Rome will increase that push which they've done. 00:06:02.62\00:06:06.63 And that finally, 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.26 once Protestant society and the free, 00:06:08.30\00:06:11.47 religiously free society in the United States 00:06:11.50\00:06:13.94 will pick up that cajole and enforce Sunday worship. 00:06:13.97\00:06:19.07 And I said, "You haven't read Great Controversy, have you?" 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.58 They didn't answer me. 00:06:21.61\00:06:22.94 And I do believe that, unfortunately, 00:06:22.98\00:06:25.01 even within the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:06:25.05\00:06:26.65 many have not adequately read Great Controversy 00:06:26.68\00:06:29.98 after not having adequately read the Bible. 00:06:30.02\00:06:32.75 I want to share a few pages from Great Controversy 00:06:32.79\00:06:37.29 on this general topic of the Sunday worship 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.43 and the role of the United States. 00:06:40.46\00:06:44.07 It's from the chapter, God's law immutable. 00:06:44.10\00:06:47.80 And it says this, and so please indulge me, 00:06:47.84\00:06:50.61 but this may be a way that we all, 00:06:50.64\00:06:52.77 I review it and you hear it perhaps for the first time. 00:06:52.81\00:06:56.11 It says, "The importance of the Sabbath 00:06:56.14\00:06:57.85 as a memorial of creation 00:06:57.88\00:07:00.65 is that it keeps ever present the true reason 00:07:00.68\00:07:03.39 why worship is due to God, 00:07:03.42\00:07:06.12 because He is the Creator and we are His creatures." 00:07:06.15\00:07:09.69 The Sabbath therefore, 00:07:09.72\00:07:11.33 and this is a quote from J. N. Andrews, 00:07:11.36\00:07:14.53 History of the Sabbath. 00:07:14.56\00:07:15.90 "The Sabbath therefore lies 00:07:15.93\00:07:17.27 at the very foundation of divine worship, 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.73 for it teaches this great truth in the most impressive manner 00:07:19.77\00:07:23.10 and no other institution does this. 00:07:23.14\00:07:25.71 The true ground of divine worship, 00:07:25.74\00:07:28.44 not of that on the seventh day merely, 00:07:28.48\00:07:33.38 but of all worship is found in the distinction 00:07:33.42\00:07:36.72 between the Creator and His creatures. 00:07:36.75\00:07:39.05 This great fact can never become obsolete 00:07:39.09\00:07:41.59 and must never be forgotten. 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.79 It was to keep this truth ever before the minds of men 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.23 that God instituted the Sabbath in Eden." 00:07:46.26\00:07:49.26 And the pope dodged that a bit 00:07:49.30\00:07:50.97 because he said it was given to the Jews, 00:07:51.00\00:07:52.70 but it was given to mankind at creation. 00:07:52.73\00:07:56.37 And he continues to say that, 00:07:56.40\00:07:58.67 "Had the Sabbath been universally kept, 00:07:58.71\00:08:00.51 man's thoughts and affections 00:08:00.54\00:08:02.58 would have been led to the Creator 00:08:02.61\00:08:05.25 as the object of reverence and worship, 00:08:05.28\00:08:07.22 and they would never have been an idolater, 00:08:07.25\00:08:09.52 an atheist or an infidel. 00:08:09.55\00:08:11.19 The keeping of the Sabbath 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.02 is a sign of loyalty to the true God." 00:08:13.05\00:08:16.22 And I think that's just logical. 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.53 And, of course, prophecy points to this. 00:08:19.56\00:08:21.63 And it says in contrast, 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.00 "To those who keep the commandments of God 00:08:23.03\00:08:24.93 and have the faith of Jesus." 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.63 "The third angel of Revelation 14 00:08:26.67\00:08:29.30 points to another class 00:08:29.34\00:08:30.67 against whose errors are solemn and fearful warning is uttered: 00:08:30.71\00:08:34.44 If any man worship the beast and his image, 00:08:34.48\00:08:37.71 and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand, 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.65 the same shall drink of the wine 00:08:40.68\00:08:42.32 of the wrath of God." 00:08:42.35\00:08:43.69 That's Revelation 14. 00:08:43.72\00:08:46.45 So who are the beast and the image? 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.49 It says, "The line of prophecy 00:08:48.52\00:08:49.92 in which these symbols are found 00:08:49.96\00:08:51.49 begins with Revelation 12 with the dragon 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.90 who sought to destroy Christ at His birth. 00:08:54.93\00:08:57.80 The dragon is said to be Satan." 00:08:57.83\00:09:00.44 That's in Revelation 12:9. 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.04 "He it was that moved upon Herod 00:09:03.07\00:09:05.51 to put the Savior to death. 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.31 But the chief agent of Satan 00:09:07.34\00:09:08.84 in making war upon Christ and His people 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.01 during the first centuries of the Christian era 00:09:11.05\00:09:13.78 was the Roman Empire, 00:09:13.82\00:09:16.12 in which the paganism was the prevailing religion. 00:09:16.15\00:09:20.49 Thus, while the dragon primarily present Satan, 00:09:20.52\00:09:24.39 it is as a secondary, 00:09:24.43\00:09:26.06 in a secondary sense the symbol of pagan Rome." 00:09:26.09\00:09:29.33 No question on that. 00:09:29.36\00:09:32.53 Historians universally know and acknowledge 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.77 that pagan Rome persecuted early Christianity. 00:09:34.80\00:09:37.97 It says in Chapter 13 of Revelation 00:09:38.01\00:09:40.31 described another beast like unto a leopard, 00:09:40.34\00:09:43.51 to which the dragon gave his power and his seat 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.91 and great authority. 00:09:45.95\00:09:48.08 This symbol as most Protestants have believed 00:09:48.12\00:09:50.55 represents the papacy. 00:09:50.59\00:09:53.82 And the papacy is a political and religious combination 00:09:53.86\00:09:57.69 by its own testimonies. 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.59 It's not disputed. 00:09:59.63\00:10:01.00 It says, "Which succeeded to the power and seat 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.53 and authority once held by the ancient Roman Empire. 00:10:03.57\00:10:06.97 Of the leopardlike beast it is declared 00:10:07.00\00:10:09.04 there was given unto him 00:10:09.07\00:10:10.41 a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies. 00:10:10.44\00:10:13.61 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God 00:10:13.64\00:10:16.08 to blaspheme his name, and His tabernacle, 00:10:16.11\00:10:19.08 and them that dwell in heaven. 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.52 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, 00:10:20.55\00:10:23.85 and to overcome them and power was given him 00:10:23.89\00:10:26.25 over all kindred and tongues and nations. 00:10:26.29\00:10:29.56 This prophecy says great controversy, 00:10:29.59\00:10:32.36 which is nearly identical with the description 00:10:32.39\00:10:34.26 of the little horn of Daniel 7." 00:10:34.30\00:10:36.97 Another prophetic 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.33 looking forward to persecuting power, 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.37 unquestionably points to the papacy. 00:10:40.40\00:10:43.51 And, you know, we don't want to attack unduly 00:10:43.54\00:10:46.61 another religious force in this world. 00:10:46.64\00:10:49.44 So we're primarily talking 00:10:49.48\00:10:50.98 about the historical role of papacy 00:10:51.01\00:10:53.28 played in medieval persecutions and the claims 00:10:53.31\00:10:56.32 that it made then someone 00:10:56.35\00:10:58.35 of which it carries forward to this present day 00:10:58.39\00:11:01.46 even in a more quiescent form. 00:11:01.49\00:11:04.23 And it says, "Power was given unto him 00:11:04.26\00:11:07.03 to continue 40 and 2 months. 00:11:07.06\00:11:09.50 And says the prophet, 00:11:09.53\00:11:10.87 'I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death.' 00:11:10.90\00:11:13.13 And again, he that leadeth into captivity 00:11:13.17\00:11:15.74 shall go into captivity.'" 00:11:15.77\00:11:18.57 Years ago, I was reading a letter 00:11:18.61\00:11:20.08 between Thomas Jefferson and President, 00:11:20.11\00:11:23.28 Ex-president Adams in their old age, 00:11:23.31\00:11:26.15 and they both wondered 00:11:26.18\00:11:27.52 whether Christianity would survive in America. 00:11:27.55\00:11:30.29 Jefferson thought not. 00:11:30.32\00:11:32.75 Adam said, "Yes, it'll survive." 00:11:32.79\00:11:34.62 But he says "First, 00:11:34.66\00:11:35.99 that Hindu capitalistic system known as Roman Catholicism 00:11:36.02\00:11:39.73 must die." 00:11:39.76\00:11:41.10 That's what aggressive Protestantism 00:11:41.13\00:11:43.90 thought in his day. 00:11:43.93\00:11:45.27 That's how they describe the papacy and he says, 00:11:45.30\00:11:48.54 but first, he says that present, 00:11:48.57\00:11:51.31 it has a mortal wound. 00:11:51.34\00:11:53.54 He understood this prophecy. 00:11:53.58\00:11:56.98 Napoleon Bonaparte had taken the pope captive 00:11:57.01\00:12:01.92 and destroyed its secular power or the pope secular power. 00:12:01.95\00:12:06.12 And he says that present has a mortal wound 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.22 but such is its strength 00:12:08.26\00:12:09.59 that it may take 200 years more for it to fail. 00:12:09.62\00:12:13.53 We're 200 years down and, of course, it's resurgent. 00:12:13.56\00:12:16.56 But there's a danger in the persecutory power 00:12:16.60\00:12:20.20 that's inherent in these absolutist claims 00:12:20.24\00:12:23.61 that Rome falling on, 00:12:23.64\00:12:25.71 Roman Catholic Church following on from Rome 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.01 had made. 00:12:28.04\00:12:29.94 And it says, at this point, another symbol is introduced, 00:12:29.98\00:12:34.98 says the prophet, 00:12:35.02\00:12:36.35 "I beheld another beast coming up from the earth 00:12:36.38\00:12:38.19 and he had two horns like a lamb. 00:12:38.22\00:12:40.06 Both the appearance of this beast 00:12:40.09\00:12:41.56 and the manner of its rise 00:12:41.59\00:12:42.92 indicate that the nation that is represented 00:12:42.96\00:12:45.23 is unlike those in the preceding symbols." 00:12:45.26\00:12:49.13 And it says, 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.60 "The beast with the lamblike horns 00:12:51.63\00:12:53.34 was seen coming out of the earth. 00:12:53.37\00:12:55.54 Instead of overthrowing other powers, 00:12:55.57\00:12:57.54 this nation arises from territory 00:12:57.57\00:13:00.21 previously unoccupied." 00:13:00.24\00:13:01.58 Well, unoccupied in a European sense, 00:13:01.61\00:13:04.08 but still a new land. 00:13:04.11\00:13:06.41 And it says, "It could not then arise 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.05 among the crowded 00:13:08.08\00:13:09.42 and struggling nationalities of the old world. 00:13:09.45\00:13:11.95 It must be in the western continent. 00:13:11.99\00:13:13.99 This is what nation? 00:13:14.02\00:13:16.12 This is the, the rhetorical question 00:13:16.16\00:13:20.60 asked in Great Controversy. 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.13 What nation of the new world 00:13:22.16\00:13:24.63 was in 1798 arising into power, 00:13:24.67\00:13:29.20 giving promise of strength and greatness 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.07 and attracting the attention of the world? 00:13:31.11\00:13:33.27 The application of the symbol admits of no question, 00:13:33.31\00:13:36.04 one nation and one only meets 00:13:36.08\00:13:38.61 the specification of this prophecy. 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.62 It points unmistakeably 00:13:40.65\00:13:43.42 to the United States of America. 00:13:43.45\00:13:47.26 It's an interesting point, 00:13:47.29\00:13:48.62 and we're going to take a break in a moment, 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.43 but I'll bring it to the point, it says, 00:13:51.46\00:13:52.83 he had two horns like a lamb, 00:13:52.86\00:13:56.50 lamblike, seemingly specific, but it says, 00:13:56.53\00:13:59.50 "The lamblike horns indicate youth, 00:13:59.53\00:14:01.34 innocence and gentleness, fitly representing 00:14:01.37\00:14:03.87 the character of the United States 00:14:03.91\00:14:06.24 when represented to the prophet is coming up in 1798." 00:14:06.27\00:14:11.41 But later, it found, 00:14:11.45\00:14:13.18 it's found to be aggressive and dominant. 00:14:13.21\00:14:15.75 And it says, these horns figuratively can be seen 00:14:15.78\00:14:19.12 as the two characteristics of the United States, 00:14:19.15\00:14:21.86 Republicanism, which is power from the people 00:14:21.89\00:14:25.09 and Protestantism, fundamental characteristics. 00:14:25.13\00:14:29.70 And I found it very significant 00:14:29.73\00:14:31.13 in a recent presidential election. 00:14:31.17\00:14:32.83 Senator Santorum, a fine and upstanding 00:14:32.87\00:14:35.54 and deeply dedicated Roman Catholic candidate said 00:14:35.57\00:14:40.18 in a shocking commentary 00:14:40.21\00:14:42.34 that was picked up by media everywhere. 00:14:42.38\00:14:44.08 He says, "Protestantism is absent in America today." 00:14:44.11\00:14:48.02 Let's take a break and I'll come back 00:14:48.05\00:14:49.45 and continue and conclude 00:14:49.48\00:14:51.15 this important segment of the book, 00:14:51.19\00:14:54.06 Great Controversy by Ellen G. White 00:14:54.09\00:14:56.16 written 120 some years ago. 00:14:56.19\00:14:58.86
