Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:29.36\00:00:31.23 This is a program designed to give you insights 00:00:31.26\00:00:34.86 and a deeper perspective on religious liberty events 00:00:34.90\00:00:39.57 in the US and around the world. 00:00:39.60\00:00:41.54 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:41.57\00:00:45.44 and my guest on this program is someone I know very well. 00:00:45.47\00:00:48.74 A young lady with the same last name as mine, 00:00:48.78\00:00:51.88 Kristen Steed, my daughter. 00:00:51.91\00:00:54.15 And I've had your brother and my son on before, 00:00:54.18\00:00:58.39 Christopher, and for purpose 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.56 because I think it's very healthy to emphasize 00:01:00.59\00:01:04.06 on religious liberty that's not just for old fogies 00:01:04.09\00:01:06.59 or middle-aged people or parents, 00:01:06.63\00:01:08.86 that young people need to be involved. 00:01:08.90\00:01:11.77 After all, Christianity was established 00:01:11.80\00:01:14.10 by a band of young people, 00:01:14.14\00:01:16.54 very likely that none of them were more than their mid-20s, 00:01:16.57\00:01:20.04 maybe Peter was, he might have been 30 or so. 00:01:20.08\00:01:24.38 But if for no other reason that we know in that era, 00:01:24.41\00:01:27.45 and right through the middle ages, 00:01:27.48\00:01:28.82 people didn't live much beyond their mid-30s. 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.42 Lifespan was very short. 00:01:31.45\00:01:32.92 So young people 00:01:32.95\00:01:34.29 and the energy they have is important. 00:01:34.32\00:01:36.83 Let's talk about what you've been doing 00:01:36.86\00:01:38.26 in the last few months, Kristen. 00:01:38.29\00:01:41.30 We've all lived in a fake reality, haven't we? 00:01:41.33\00:01:44.77 COVID-19. 00:01:44.80\00:01:46.50 What have you been doing most days lately, 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.20 up until a few weeks ago? 00:01:49.24\00:01:50.77 Well, we had a school online, of course, because of COVID. 00:01:50.81\00:01:55.44 So all my classes were quickly put online, 00:01:55.48\00:01:58.91 and we weren't allowed to go to school, 00:01:58.95\00:02:01.08 weren't really allowed to see our friends. 00:02:01.12\00:02:02.78 And it was kind of hard because it was my senior year. 00:02:02.82\00:02:05.35 So we didn't get to do, you know, 00:02:05.39\00:02:07.19 most of the things that like the senior year 00:02:07.22\00:02:09.49 consists of which was really, really sad. 00:02:09.52\00:02:12.23 Yeah, you were going 00:02:12.26\00:02:13.60 to a Seventh-day Adventist Christian Academy, right? 00:02:13.63\00:02:17.60 How would you characterize 00:02:17.63\00:02:20.90 its Christian identity during this time? 00:02:20.94\00:02:23.10 What made it different? 00:02:23.14\00:02:26.21 Well, they were able to show through the students 00:02:26.24\00:02:30.85 what was, like how to be strong through the time, 00:02:30.88\00:02:34.72 which I think is very important. 00:02:34.75\00:02:37.35 And like, you know, 00:02:37.39\00:02:39.55 they had different children in the school, do videos, 00:02:39.59\00:02:44.83 and talking about like, what was going on, 00:02:44.86\00:02:47.53 how we should stay strong for Christ. 00:02:47.56\00:02:49.80 And I think that's very important 00:02:49.83\00:02:53.34 and the school was able to do that. 00:02:53.37\00:02:59.17 And you did still have religious studies, right? 00:02:59.21\00:03:01.88 So some of that continued. 00:03:01.91\00:03:03.48 But obviously you didn't have outings, 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.05 you weren't going and witnessing 00:03:07.08\00:03:08.82 or interacting even with other Christian schools, 00:03:08.85\00:03:12.65 much less community projects. 00:03:12.69\00:03:15.99 So it was restricted in that way, 00:03:16.02\00:03:17.86 but at least they were encouraging you 00:03:17.89\00:03:19.33 in a difficult time to still be Christ oriented, right? 00:03:19.36\00:03:24.00 So it's a good thing. 00:03:24.03\00:03:25.37 Now when it all ended, there was no big graduation, 00:03:25.40\00:03:30.34 no march down with lots of parents 00:03:30.37\00:03:34.61 and friends and all the trimmings 00:03:34.64\00:03:37.75 that go with the graduation. 00:03:37.78\00:03:39.11 How did yours go? 00:03:39.15\00:03:40.48 Because this is, maybe a lot of people 00:03:40.52\00:03:41.85 don't realize only parents that had graduating seniors. 00:03:41.88\00:03:45.75 It was very abhorrent, in my lifetime 00:03:45.79\00:03:47.92 I've never seen anything like it. 00:03:47.96\00:03:50.16 You had the advantage 00:03:50.19\00:03:51.83 of being at a fairly small school 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.29 so how many were in your graduating class? 00:03:53.33\00:03:55.16 So in my class only had 13 people 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.37 which is really small and so because 00:03:57.40\00:04:02.17 our class was so small, they're able to actually 00:04:02.20\00:04:04.94 have our own personal graduations. 00:04:04.97\00:04:07.64 So the whole school, all the teachers 00:04:07.68\00:04:09.78 that came to our house to have me walk down 00:04:09.81\00:04:14.42 the aisle which happened to be our friend. 00:04:14.45\00:04:15.78 Even had the recorded music on some circumstances. 00:04:15.82\00:04:18.05 Yeah. I really enjoyed it. 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.69 And I know that I was lucky because a lot of other students 00:04:20.72\00:04:26.66 were not able to have that 00:04:26.70\00:04:28.26 because of bigger classes and you know. 00:04:28.30\00:04:32.63 So, yeah, I remember there was a cavalcade of cars, 00:04:32.67\00:04:36.94 several cars and a bus and so on that they came, 00:04:36.97\00:04:39.84 they rolled up in front of our house, 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.74 quickly set up a little lectern on the front lawn 00:04:41.78\00:04:44.55 and the PA system with the music playing 00:04:44.58\00:04:47.65 and we went through the whole thing. 00:04:47.68\00:04:49.35 It didn't take long, 00:04:49.38\00:04:50.72 I think half an hour for the whole deal. 00:04:50.75\00:04:52.62 But we had, you had an address from your principal. 00:04:52.65\00:04:55.22 Yeah, it was amazing. 00:04:55.26\00:04:56.59 You had extended testimonials from some of the teachers 00:04:56.62\00:04:59.26 and did you find it gratifying, a personalized graduation? 00:04:59.29\00:05:04.93 I think it was amazing like, of course, I didn't expect 00:05:04.97\00:05:09.20 anything to happen 00:05:09.24\00:05:10.57 because what was going on, like, you know, 00:05:10.61\00:05:12.74 we thought we're going to graduate online. 00:05:12.77\00:05:15.01 And, you know, that was really sad, 00:05:15.04\00:05:16.98 but when, you know, when they came and did this, 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.08 it was amazing because, you know, 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.98 I didn't expect the school to go all out. 00:05:21.02\00:05:24.79 And they were able to, 00:05:24.82\00:05:28.02 like really make this a personal thing, 00:05:28.06\00:05:31.56 which it is. 00:05:31.59\00:05:32.93 And, of course, we weren't sure what was going to happen. 00:05:32.96\00:05:37.77 But when it happened, it was amazing. 00:05:37.80\00:05:40.74 And I couldn't ask for anything better. 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.30 You want to know the lesson 00:05:42.34\00:05:43.74 that I want to gain from that to even suggest 00:05:43.77\00:05:47.61 to our listeners is I think this went deeper 00:05:47.64\00:05:51.15 to the root of what Christianity 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.58 should be about then than you might have realized. 00:05:52.61\00:05:56.65 It says in the Book of Revelation 00:05:56.69\00:05:58.02 that there'll be a crowd 00:05:58.05\00:05:59.39 who's no man can number in heaven redeemed. 00:05:59.42\00:06:02.46 But at the same time, it's very personal. 00:06:02.49\00:06:05.46 We told that we can have 00:06:05.49\00:06:07.60 the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. 00:06:07.63\00:06:09.43 We're told that Jesus 00:06:09.46\00:06:11.13 can communicate to us personally. 00:06:11.17\00:06:13.20 He would die for one person if necessary. 00:06:13.23\00:06:16.81 And in the Bible, it gives the implication 00:06:16.84\00:06:21.34 that the crown of life is placed individually on us. 00:06:21.38\00:06:25.35 So to me, this was fantastic. 00:06:25.38\00:06:28.05 That one single graduate, all of the focus of the group 00:06:28.08\00:06:33.09 that wanted to get you through that your teachers do. 00:06:33.12\00:06:37.43 Looking back, I can remember a few teachers 00:06:37.46\00:06:39.33 that I feared that they didn't want me to pass. 00:06:39.36\00:06:44.03 But in reality, any good teacher 00:06:44.07\00:06:46.43 wants the students to do well and to pass. 00:06:46.47\00:06:48.64 So these were your backers, 00:06:48.67\00:06:51.17 and they were there to encourage you 00:06:51.21\00:06:53.68 and to now acknowledge that 00:06:53.71\00:06:55.54 you're graduating and moving on, 00:06:55.58\00:06:57.95 and I saw a great spiritual implication 00:06:57.98\00:07:00.08 in a time of restriction, 00:07:00.12\00:07:03.15 when we're keeping to our homes 00:07:03.18\00:07:05.79 and I meant to say this quote, 00:07:05.82\00:07:08.16 maybe not the right time to say it, 00:07:08.19\00:07:09.52 but I've got a book on John Bunyan. 00:07:09.56\00:07:11.23 You remember John Bunyan 00:07:11.26\00:07:12.93 was a soldier in the English Civil War. 00:07:12.96\00:07:16.36 And after the war, became an itinerant preacher 00:07:16.40\00:07:18.93 and he spent 14 years in jail for preaching, 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.54 well, not of heresy, but without a license. 00:07:21.57\00:07:25.37 And the book I have about John Bunyan is not 00:07:25.41\00:07:27.38 what he wrote Pilgrim's Progress 00:07:27.41\00:07:29.21 and many other great books, 00:07:29.24\00:07:30.78 but it's about his times what religion was like. 00:07:30.81\00:07:34.15 And, you know, people got fined 00:07:34.18\00:07:35.98 for not going to church on Sunday. 00:07:36.02\00:07:38.72 There were severe penalties for spiritual infractions. 00:07:38.75\00:07:43.12 I remember reading in the same book that 00:07:43.16\00:07:45.73 the village clerk was fined because he's saying 00:07:45.76\00:07:49.00 with the dissonant voice during the services, 00:07:49.03\00:07:51.20 and it says in other words, squeaking like a pig, 00:07:51.23\00:07:54.20 but in that same book, 00:07:54.24\00:07:55.57 it said another official was fined 00:07:55.60\00:07:58.77 for keeping to his bearlike 00:07:58.81\00:08:00.61 a hand to his kindle on Sabbath or on Sunday. 00:08:00.64\00:08:04.45 And during COVID this sort of what we were, 00:08:04.48\00:08:07.02 we will, I felt like we were in our kennel. 00:08:07.05\00:08:09.38 We weren't allowed out. Yeah. 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.12 But you've said that 00:08:12.15\00:08:13.92 as a student of a Christian school 00:08:13.96\00:08:15.59 you were able to at least get spiritual values 00:08:15.62\00:08:19.46 and interact in a spiritual sense. 00:08:19.49\00:08:22.83 Yeah. 00:08:22.86\00:08:24.20 So where does that leave you 00:08:24.23\00:08:25.57 as a young lady now sailing forth on to life, 00:08:25.60\00:08:30.31 college probably? 00:08:30.34\00:08:31.91 But you know, in the COVID era as a young person, 00:08:31.94\00:08:36.44 do you think it's possible to live 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.38 as a Christian, witness as a Christian? 00:08:38.41\00:08:40.25 What do you see the possibilities? 00:08:40.28\00:08:43.49 Oh, I think it's almost the same as before. 00:08:43.52\00:08:47.89 It's just you have to do it in different way, 00:08:47.92\00:08:49.92 different manner. 00:08:49.96\00:08:51.29 Because before we could go out, 00:08:51.33\00:08:53.19 we could share our religion out in public and, 00:08:53.23\00:08:58.00 but now we're more closed in, but we can do it online. 00:08:58.03\00:09:02.70 And nowadays, you know, most people can get on 00:09:02.74\00:09:06.64 to like social media or YouTube and like, 00:09:06.68\00:09:10.58 you know, they can watch things 00:09:10.61\00:09:11.95 and I feel like nowadays it's going to be a lot of that. 00:09:11.98\00:09:16.02 And that's how we're going to, you know, go out. 00:09:16.05\00:09:20.32 Now what if by witnessing 00:09:20.36\00:09:23.19 and speaking about your faith online, 00:09:23.22\00:09:25.73 the same algorithms that are tracking 00:09:25.76\00:09:28.13 you now that know what you buy, 00:09:28.16\00:09:31.10 what you think can almost double guess 00:09:31.13\00:09:32.97 what your next search would be. 00:09:33.00\00:09:34.34 What if the same algorithm said that 00:09:34.37\00:09:36.10 this is anti-social behavior to talk about religion 00:09:36.14\00:09:40.81 that you either would be fined in some way 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.18 or more important for a young person 00:09:44.21\00:09:46.11 maybe cut off from these contacts, 00:09:46.15\00:09:48.52 you'll be delisted. 00:09:48.55\00:09:51.52 I don't think that... 00:09:51.55\00:09:52.89 How would that change your behavior? 00:09:52.92\00:09:54.26 I think that's going to happen like anytime soon maybe in the, 00:09:54.29\00:09:59.13 you know, future but I think 00:09:59.16\00:10:04.43 that'll make things a little more difficult, 00:10:04.47\00:10:06.67 of course, because you don't. 00:10:06.70\00:10:10.57 People don't get to see what you're talking about, 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.54 or what you believe. 00:10:13.58\00:10:15.31 And, of course, nowadays, 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.11 it's, people are really talking about 00:10:17.15\00:10:21.12 what they believe and sharing what they think is right. 00:10:21.15\00:10:25.75 And if you're not able to do that, 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.92 it's going to be like really hard 00:10:28.96\00:10:30.79 for the Christian faith to share with it. 00:10:30.83\00:10:34.53 It is going to be hard. 00:10:34.56\00:10:35.96 Remember Jesus said, 00:10:36.00\00:10:37.87 very hard times are coming so hard, 00:10:37.90\00:10:40.37 that unless the day's final days 00:10:40.40\00:10:42.50 are shortened, nobody would survive, 00:10:42.54\00:10:45.21 and I think he meant it in the first sense, 00:10:45.24\00:10:48.38 human life would be impossible, 00:10:48.41\00:10:50.01 but the most important sense though would be, he says, 00:10:50.05\00:10:54.95 will he find faith on the earth. 00:10:54.98\00:10:58.19 If you're not sharing 00:10:58.22\00:10:59.89 and you're not getting it from anyone else 00:10:59.92\00:11:01.59 and perhaps not even able 00:11:01.62\00:11:04.49 as they were in some places 00:11:04.53\00:11:05.99 recently able to read the Bible freely. 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.30 That sort of restricts faith in dangerous ways. 00:11:08.33\00:11:11.37 Yeah. 00:11:11.40\00:11:12.73 So you've got a challenge ahead of you, 00:11:12.77\00:11:14.10 your generation young lady, make it happen. 00:11:14.14\00:11:16.30 Yeah. Stand for religious liberty. 00:11:16.34\00:11:19.01 And, you know, in spite of what viewers may think, 00:11:19.04\00:11:22.14 I don't lecture you and your brother, 00:11:22.18\00:11:24.81 family about religious liberty a lot, 00:11:24.85\00:11:26.68 but you know you're around it. 00:11:26.72\00:11:28.05 What, why do you think religious liberty is important? 00:11:28.08\00:11:31.92 I think it's important that people are allowed to say, 00:11:31.95\00:11:36.26 and share what they believe. 00:11:36.29\00:11:38.23 Because that's the only way like, 00:11:38.26\00:11:40.70 you know, we all be saved. 00:11:40.73\00:11:42.13 If other people know, you know, Christ says like, you're not, 00:11:42.16\00:11:46.87 we're not, He's not going to come back 00:11:46.90\00:11:48.77 till the whole world knows, 00:11:48.80\00:11:50.51 and if we're not able to share that, 00:11:50.54\00:11:52.77 and what's going to happen. 00:11:52.81\00:11:54.18 Yeah. 00:11:54.21\00:11:55.54 So it's something that has to be shared this, 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.41 it's, if we're selfish by definition, 00:11:57.45\00:12:00.65 we don't understand God's concern. 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.75 You know, on another program with your brother 00:12:02.78\00:12:05.59 I mentioned Jesus prayer 00:12:05.62\00:12:06.96 where He prayed for His disciples. 00:12:06.99\00:12:09.02 He said He didn't pray for the world, 00:12:09.06\00:12:10.39 which is interesting, 00:12:10.43\00:12:11.76 although he did come for the world, 00:12:11.79\00:12:13.70 but in His prayer to His Father, 00:12:13.73\00:12:15.06 He said He prayed for the disciples, 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.46 but not just for them, 00:12:16.50\00:12:17.83 but for all who believed in His name. 00:12:17.87\00:12:20.50 So we have to have that sense. 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.44 Yes, young people... 00:12:26.94\00:12:28.28 Let me ask you an even more difficult question. 00:12:28.31\00:12:32.45 In the United States where we live, 00:12:32.48\00:12:35.15 and he laughed at me a bit with my accent still, 00:12:35.18\00:12:38.72 I'll never be able to deny that I grew up in Australia, 00:12:38.75\00:12:42.19 but I've lived most of my life in the US. 00:12:42.22\00:12:44.16 But you're an American young lady, fully. 00:12:44.19\00:12:47.56 And in America, people think easily 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.67 it's possible to think that to be an American 00:12:50.70\00:12:53.13 and free is the same thing as being a Christian and free. 00:12:53.17\00:12:56.50 Is there a difference? 00:12:56.54\00:12:58.77 I think there should be like a distinction, 00:12:58.81\00:13:02.58 because having freedom as an American 00:13:02.61\00:13:06.58 and having freedom as a Christian, 00:13:06.61\00:13:08.95 like, as an American, 00:13:08.98\00:13:11.89 you should have freedom for your religion, 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.76 of course, you know, rights. 00:13:14.79\00:13:17.96 But as a Christian, do we actually have that? 00:13:17.99\00:13:23.16 As an American, we think we might. 00:13:23.20\00:13:25.47 But if you're looking at your, you know, you as a Christian, 00:13:25.50\00:13:29.40 do we, do we really? 00:13:29.44\00:13:30.77 So ultimately your loyalty is to... 00:13:30.81\00:13:32.64 God. 00:13:32.67\00:13:34.01 God, and in a nice system, 00:13:34.04\00:13:36.04 there's not an automatic conflict, 00:13:36.08\00:13:38.81 but on a certain level, there's always a conflict. 00:13:38.85\00:13:42.05 And when there's the conflict, you judge God. 00:13:42.08\00:13:45.19 It's like the Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 00:13:45.22\00:13:50.73 the three Hebrew worthies they say, 00:13:50.76\00:13:52.89 that's what they said to Nebuchadnezzar, 00:13:52.93\00:13:54.66 you know, whatever you say, fine, but we have to obey God, 00:13:54.70\00:13:59.27 doesn't mean that you automatically disobey 00:13:59.30\00:14:01.50 what the state says, you have to be obedient 00:14:01.54\00:14:03.51 as they were with the normal things. 00:14:03.54\00:14:05.11 And as Daniel was within regular laws, 00:14:05.14\00:14:07.78 even if those laws were not based on Christianity, 00:14:07.81\00:14:11.08 if they were not requiring you to deny God, 00:14:11.11\00:14:14.75 you go along with it, but God has priority. 00:14:14.78\00:14:17.92 We'll take a break now. 00:14:17.95\00:14:19.29 So stay with us, with young Kristen. 00:14:19.32\00:14:22.19 We'll sort of explore a bit more 00:14:22.22\00:14:23.79 what it means to be worshiping 00:14:23.83\00:14:27.13 and practicing your faith during COVID and beyond. 00:14:27.16\00:14:30.67
