Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.73 And before the break as you remember with my son, 00:00:02.76\00:00:05.93 Christopher, young man of 22, with the world ahead of him. 00:00:05.97\00:00:10.87 We were talking about the world, 00:00:10.91\00:00:13.21 and some of the experiences that you've had, 00:00:13.24\00:00:15.78 and some of them I've been with you to see on religion 00:00:15.81\00:00:19.75 and the implications for the practice of religion 00:00:19.78\00:00:22.68 and the sharing of religion 00:00:22.72\00:00:24.05 and the history of religion all around the world. 00:00:24.09\00:00:26.52 And I was trying to jog your memory 00:00:26.55\00:00:28.26 about worshiping in Thailand. 00:00:28.29\00:00:31.99 That's a, an overwhelmingly Buddhist country. 00:00:32.03\00:00:35.93 And Buddhism 00:00:35.96\00:00:37.73 is as much a philosophy as a religion. 00:00:37.77\00:00:39.83 In fact, Buddha didn't try to start a religion, 00:00:39.87\00:00:43.30 but along the way as Christianity 00:00:43.34\00:00:45.67 in the Roman Catholic aspect, 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.88 it picked up a lot of superstition 00:00:47.91\00:00:49.58 and Spiritism and so on, 00:00:49.61\00:00:51.85 but at root it's really philosophical, 00:00:51.88\00:00:54.28 and it tends to make the society quite passive. 00:00:54.32\00:00:57.95 So there hasn't been open persecution 00:00:57.99\00:01:00.89 much in Buddhism, 00:01:00.92\00:01:02.92 it's just community resistance to Christianity, 00:01:02.96\00:01:06.03 but do you remember what your sister repeated 00:01:06.06\00:01:09.63 the other day about going to church there? 00:01:09.66\00:01:13.80 She was one of her teachers, we won't say 00:01:13.84\00:01:15.67 where or which teacher 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.04 because we don't want to make them look bad, 00:01:17.07\00:01:19.04 but they gave the idea 00:01:19.07\00:01:21.18 that you couldn't worship freely in Thailand. 00:01:21.21\00:01:23.81 And she said, "Well, I went to church there, 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.75 no problem." 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.48 And don't you think there's a danger 00:01:27.52\00:01:30.49 to sort of make difficulties where there're none, 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.89 to presume that 00:01:33.92\00:01:35.26 they're against you automatically. 00:01:35.29\00:01:37.13 Absolutely, 100%. 00:01:37.16\00:01:38.83 If you automatically presume, but for example, 00:01:38.86\00:01:41.23 when we went to Thailand, 00:01:41.26\00:01:42.60 I had no preemptive ideas that they were gonna be 00:01:42.63\00:01:47.37 that we wouldn't be going to church. 00:01:47.40\00:01:49.17 You know, I was thinking, you know, 00:01:49.20\00:01:50.54 I thought that, you know, 00:01:50.57\00:01:51.91 it's a majority Buddhist country. 00:01:51.94\00:01:53.27 I thought, you know, 00:01:53.31\00:01:54.64 maybe they wouldn't have a fully established church. 00:01:54.68\00:01:56.68 I thought it would be meeting in like 00:01:56.71\00:01:58.05 someone's basement or meeting in the front yard 00:01:58.08\00:02:02.72 of someone's house. 00:02:02.75\00:02:04.09 I didn't think they would have 00:02:04.12\00:02:05.45 a full on Adventist church there, 00:02:05.49\00:02:08.89 but there was absolutely no problem going to church. 00:02:08.92\00:02:12.99 We found the church. It was well advertised. 00:02:13.03\00:02:15.76 I wouldn't say advertise, it was well signed. 00:02:15.80\00:02:18.17 Yeah, it wasn't hidden. Yeah, no, absolutely not. 00:02:18.20\00:02:20.70 The only thing was it had a wall around it. 00:02:20.74\00:02:24.21 Well, there's different security 00:02:24.24\00:02:26.94 necessities in different societies. 00:02:26.98\00:02:30.15 Maybe we don't need some more before we're done. 00:02:30.18\00:02:34.72 Not everybody has electronic alarm 00:02:34.75\00:02:37.35 on the window openings and so on, 00:02:37.39\00:02:38.89 but what I see in other countries 00:02:38.92\00:02:43.02 doesn't necessarily mean they have higher crime, 00:02:43.06\00:02:44.83 but, you know, the statement says 00:02:44.86\00:02:46.19 good fences make good neighbors. 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.76 You just stop the problem before it begins. 00:02:48.80\00:02:52.07 But yeah, I remember myself on a visit. 00:02:52.10\00:02:57.61 You weren't there. 00:02:57.64\00:02:58.97 I was on Liberty work, visiting Thailand 00:02:59.01\00:03:02.34 and I had a wonderful discussion 00:03:02.38\00:03:04.51 maybe for 20 minutes 00:03:04.55\00:03:05.88 or more with the Buddhist priest 00:03:05.91\00:03:08.48 at the Reclining Buddha statue there in Thailand. 00:03:08.52\00:03:12.79 And the best discussions in my mind of freewheeling ones 00:03:12.82\00:03:17.66 where they're sort of open, 00:03:17.69\00:03:19.16 but that I find out something maybe I partly knew, 00:03:19.19\00:03:22.00 but I get confirmation. 00:03:22.03\00:03:24.13 It wasn't that he told me things I didn't know, 00:03:24.17\00:03:25.80 but it was great to hear from a Buddhist priest, 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.70 what I just said that it was largely philosophy 00:03:27.74\00:03:31.17 at the beginning, 00:03:31.21\00:03:32.54 but I asked him, you know, given what the Buddha intended, 00:03:32.57\00:03:36.68 and, you know, Buddha's views per se by 00:03:36.71\00:03:39.18 and large are not incompatible with Christianity, 00:03:39.21\00:03:42.75 but they more and more headed that way 00:03:42.78\00:03:44.85 as the religion developed, but I said, you know, 00:03:44.89\00:03:48.46 how come there's the spirit worship 00:03:48.49\00:03:50.63 and all the rest, and he said, 00:03:50.66\00:03:52.76 this was just added, these are superstitions 00:03:52.79\00:03:55.10 for the common people, 00:03:55.13\00:03:56.46 but we Buddhist priests, by and large, 00:03:56.50\00:03:59.03 know that it's philosophical at base. 00:03:59.07\00:04:00.94 Very interesting, 00:04:00.97\00:04:02.30 which reminded me of a conversations 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.74 I've had with some Catholic priests 00:04:04.77\00:04:09.58 and theologians. 00:04:09.61\00:04:11.35 I believe that at a certain level 00:04:11.38\00:04:13.68 even in Roman Catholicism, 00:04:13.72\00:04:15.25 they know the biblical basics of what they're about 00:04:15.28\00:04:19.55 and they recognize that paganism that tradition 00:04:19.59\00:04:24.53 and some rather abhorrent things have crept in. 00:04:24.56\00:04:27.73 And, you know, that's for the masses. 00:04:27.76\00:04:30.23 I can't agree with that as a Protestant Christian, 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.93 but it's refreshing to hear someone admit that. 00:04:32.97\00:04:37.61 Where else in the world 00:04:37.64\00:04:38.97 have you seen religious practice 00:04:39.01\00:04:41.28 that have sort of opened your eyes? 00:04:41.31\00:04:46.51 Here in the US, in some states here in the US. 00:04:46.55\00:04:51.22 Driving around with you or just driving around, 00:04:51.25\00:04:55.22 I worked for a moving company. 00:04:55.26\00:04:57.09 And one day, it was fall, so it was kind of cold outside. 00:04:57.13\00:05:00.73 So I was wearing 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.10 one of my long sleeve shirts that I had, 00:05:02.13\00:05:04.17 and on the sleeve it had 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.63 on the lower part of the sleeve down here 00:05:06.67\00:05:09.17 and had Philippians 4:13, 00:05:09.20\00:05:11.01 just the Bible verse on it. 00:05:11.04\00:05:12.71 And I'm unloading a box going into the house 00:05:12.74\00:05:14.94 and the lady walking her dog goes past. 00:05:14.98\00:05:17.25 And she goes, "You're a Christian, aren't you?" 00:05:17.28\00:05:19.91 I said, "Yeah. How could you tell?" 00:05:19.95\00:05:21.88 Your shirt. 00:05:21.92\00:05:23.62 I'm like, "Oh, Philippians 4:13." 00:05:23.65\00:05:25.79 She's like, "Do you know what that Bible verse is?" 00:05:25.82\00:05:27.36 I was like, "Absolutely. It's my favorite Bible verse. 00:05:27.39\00:05:28.89 It's for I can do all things 00:05:28.92\00:05:30.26 through Christ who strengthens me." 00:05:30.29\00:05:31.89 And she's like, "Wow, 00:05:31.93\00:05:35.06 I've never heard that verse before. 00:05:35.10\00:05:37.37 I was raised in the Christian church, 00:05:37.40\00:05:39.60 but I left due to extenuating situation." 00:05:39.63\00:05:44.37 And she's like, "You know, 00:05:44.41\00:05:46.17 I always thought the Christian people 00:05:46.21\00:05:47.61 would be so judgmental and put me down." 00:05:47.64\00:05:52.58 She had a lot of body modifications. 00:05:52.61\00:05:56.12 We'll call them tattoos, piercings, and, you know, 00:05:56.15\00:06:00.26 she's had experiences with Christian in the past 00:06:00.29\00:06:03.19 where they looked at her and judged her for that, 00:06:03.22\00:06:07.60 but from reading the Bible and studying it, 00:06:07.63\00:06:13.57 Jesus says, "Come as you are." 00:06:13.60\00:06:16.37 And if she comes to church, 00:06:16.40\00:06:19.37 you know, she can be wearing jeans and a T-shirt 00:06:19.41\00:06:21.18 with all her piercings and tattoos. 00:06:21.21\00:06:22.91 We can't judge her 'cause that looks bad on us. 00:06:22.94\00:06:26.51 But with Christ on her heart, very likely she'll change. 00:06:26.55\00:06:30.15 Absolutely. And that happens a lot. 00:06:30.19\00:06:32.15 Remember the story of the demoniac? 00:06:32.19\00:06:36.02 Once the devils were gone, 00:06:36.06\00:06:37.39 he was clothed and in his right mind 00:06:37.43\00:06:38.76 and calm and peaceful and respectable 00:06:38.79\00:06:40.96 and so everything changed because of the inner change. 00:06:41.00\00:06:44.50 And sometimes we get it little mixed up, 00:06:44.53\00:06:45.93 don't we? 00:06:45.97\00:06:47.30 Can I tell you? 00:06:47.34\00:06:48.67 You're gonna have to listen a bit. 00:06:48.70\00:06:50.04 For the viewers, I wanna tell a story. 00:06:50.07\00:06:51.41 I don't think I've ever told, 00:06:51.44\00:06:52.77 but when I was roughly your age, 00:06:52.81\00:06:56.54 I went to Andrews University 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.68 and I had a car, you know, you've lost your car, 00:06:58.71\00:07:02.55 that's another story, but I had a car 00:07:02.58\00:07:04.95 that was a little car like the one you had, 00:07:04.99\00:07:08.42 not too reliable. 00:07:08.46\00:07:10.03 And I headed off after a massive snowstorm 00:07:10.06\00:07:12.83 to drive from Maryland to Andrews. 00:07:12.86\00:07:16.63 And I didn't wanna pay the toll 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.10 so I headed straight cross-country 00:07:18.13\00:07:19.73 through Indiana up the underbelly of Indiana 00:07:19.77\00:07:21.94 and I was gonna cross the freeway there 00:07:21.97\00:07:25.61 and go up to Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:07:25.64\00:07:28.54 And as I headed off, I had great troubles 00:07:28.58\00:07:30.55 because my heater wasn't working in the car, 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.68 it was minus 10 degrees and lot of snow everywhere 00:07:32.71\00:07:36.69 and so I had a blanket on my knees freezing, 00:07:36.72\00:07:40.09 but my thermostat in the car was broken 00:07:40.12\00:07:42.29 and it was overheating and I had to stop 00:07:42.32\00:07:44.19 and put water in regularly so I had a hot and cold crisis. 00:07:44.23\00:07:49.10 And I remember and I left very late in the day 00:07:49.13\00:07:51.30 and it was a slow going. 00:07:51.33\00:07:52.67 And like 2, 3 o'clock in the morning, 00:07:52.70\00:07:55.87 I was near Goshen, Indiana. 00:07:55.90\00:07:59.11 Remember, you know what Goshen is in the Bible? 00:07:59.14\00:08:03.31 That was the land 00:08:03.35\00:08:04.68 that the children of Israel lived in, in their slavery. 00:08:04.71\00:08:08.35 That was actually good land given to them initially 00:08:08.38\00:08:10.25 by the pharaoh, but... 00:08:10.29\00:08:11.62 Land of milk and honey. 00:08:11.65\00:08:12.99 No, well in a way, 00:08:13.02\00:08:15.19 but it wasn't the promised land of milk and honey. 00:08:15.22\00:08:17.49 And so in Goshen, Indiana and in the middle of the night, 00:08:17.53\00:08:22.26 no lights around that I can see my, 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.30 this is before electronic ignition, 00:08:24.33\00:08:26.97 my carburetor flew apart, 00:08:27.00\00:08:29.14 it was a violent whirring and sort of an explosion 00:08:29.17\00:08:33.01 and it just shattered 00:08:33.04\00:08:34.84 so I coast to a stop and I look around, 00:08:34.88\00:08:38.61 couldn't see any lights at first 00:08:38.65\00:08:40.22 and I thought I'm gonna die here 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.82 and finally I saw a light. 00:08:42.85\00:08:46.02 I went over to the farm house knock, knock, knock, knock 00:08:46.05\00:08:48.56 finally a guy with the nightcap come like 00:08:48.59\00:08:51.86 literally winky comes out, what do you want? 00:08:51.89\00:08:54.60 And I said, "You know, 00:08:54.63\00:08:55.96 I need help quickly and I thought I'm gonna die." 00:08:56.00\00:08:57.93 And finally he let me in. 00:08:57.97\00:09:01.24 He says, "I'll help you, 00:09:01.27\00:09:02.60 but you can't stay here tonight." 00:09:02.64\00:09:03.97 So he took me to a hotel. 00:09:04.01\00:09:05.34 In the morning, he picked me up. 00:09:05.37\00:09:07.24 He was a conservative Christian, 00:09:07.28\00:09:10.28 it was obvious. 00:09:10.31\00:09:11.65 And I said, "I have it like at home, 00:09:11.68\00:09:13.25 I have no money and all the rest." 00:09:13.28\00:09:14.65 He says, "Are you a Christian?" 00:09:14.68\00:09:16.58 I said, "Absolutely. I'm a Christian." 00:09:16.62\00:09:18.05 He says, "Don't worry, you will get home." 00:09:18.09\00:09:20.69 And he then gave me a little book called 00:09:20.72\00:09:22.96 From Life to Life, Toldhau is a young guy 00:09:22.99\00:09:26.53 in another state. 00:09:26.56\00:09:27.90 He wanted to be an outlaw, rough, tough guy 00:09:27.93\00:09:29.93 and ended up over a family feud, 00:09:29.96\00:09:32.17 killing his wife and his father-in-law. 00:09:32.20\00:09:35.64 And he was sent to prison, death penalty at first, 00:09:35.67\00:09:38.67 but it was commuted to life. 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.61 And in prison, he discovered God. 00:09:40.64\00:09:44.38 And so he kept telling me, he says, 00:09:44.41\00:09:46.92 "You can turn your life around. 00:09:46.95\00:09:48.52 If you believe in God, you will be safe." 00:09:48.55\00:09:51.59 And amazingly after it all and cutting it short 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.92 with very little time, it was exactly the money 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.69 I had in my pocket to fix my car 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.39 after half a day in the repair place, 00:09:59.43\00:10:01.16 and I went on my way, encouraged by this guy saying, 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.47 "Why are you worried you're a Christian?" 00:10:04.50\00:10:07.37 And that's the message all around the world 00:10:07.40\00:10:09.34 with persecution, difficulties. 00:10:09.37\00:10:12.27 God's with us, isn't He? 00:10:12.31\00:10:13.71 And is it impressed you that wherever we go in the world 00:10:13.74\00:10:17.15 you can find fellow Christians, fellow travelers 00:10:17.18\00:10:20.12 and that you can relate to them. 00:10:20.15\00:10:21.48 They're sort of like friends, aren't they? 00:10:21.52\00:10:22.88 Absolutely. 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.25 So, you know, just give a little cap 00:10:24.29\00:10:27.22 on how that's affected you? 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.69 For me, being a young guy and loving to travel, 00:10:29.72\00:10:33.63 going to different places around the world 00:10:33.66\00:10:35.83 and meeting fellow Christians, 00:10:35.86\00:10:37.50 especially fellow Christians youth. 00:10:37.53\00:10:39.77 It's impressed on me that no matter where you go, 00:10:39.80\00:10:41.87 no matter who you're with, 00:10:41.90\00:10:44.31 no matter what situation we're in, 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.31 no matter how rich, how poor, 00:10:46.34\00:10:49.04 that the political system you're in, 00:10:49.08\00:10:51.85 there always is a light and that light is Jesus. 00:10:51.88\00:10:56.92 The world does indeed turn at about 1,000 miles an hour, 00:10:56.95\00:11:01.02 not to mention the million miles a day 00:11:01.06\00:11:03.26 or so through space, but it's spinning. 00:11:03.29\00:11:06.26 And I think in spite of the spin 00:11:06.29\00:11:08.10 and that speed and distance that separates countries. 00:11:08.13\00:11:12.30 With the COVID emergency, 00:11:12.33\00:11:13.67 we realize that we are one, one people 00:11:13.70\00:11:16.60 because we're sharing the one malaise at the moment. 00:11:16.64\00:11:20.44 Religious Liberty also is that singular concern 00:11:20.48\00:11:24.18 because there's one God, one Creator, 00:11:24.21\00:11:26.82 as Thomas Jefferson 00:11:26.85\00:11:28.18 acknowledged in the Declaration of Independence. 00:11:28.22\00:11:30.99 You know, nature and nature's God created us 00:11:31.02\00:11:33.82 with these inalienable rights. 00:11:33.86\00:11:35.82 Well, he didn't quite identify God correctly, 00:11:35.86\00:11:39.03 but as the discussion with my son pointed out, 00:11:39.06\00:11:42.03 you can go from country to country, 00:11:42.06\00:11:43.60 see varying challenges. 00:11:43.63\00:11:45.87 And we need to recognize that through all these challenges, 00:11:45.90\00:11:49.54 God can work powerfully to project truth, 00:11:49.57\00:11:52.61 to give a response to the answering questions 00:11:52.64\00:11:55.78 of spiritually minded people all around the world 00:11:55.81\00:11:58.75 to find that one true God, 00:11:58.78\00:12:00.75 even in the time of COVID distress, 00:12:00.78\00:12:03.25 it says, "Seek ye the Lord and He may be found." 00:12:03.28\00:12:07.76 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:07.79\00:12:10.49
