Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:29.09\00:00:30.83 This is your program 00:00:30.86\00:00:32.76 bringing you insights, news, views, 00:00:32.79\00:00:35.83 and an overall understanding of religious liberty 00:00:35.86\00:00:39.27 in the United States often, but also from around the world. 00:00:39.30\00:00:43.07 My name is Lincoln steed, Editor of Liberty magazine. 00:00:43.10\00:00:46.64 And my guest on the program is a young man 00:00:46.68\00:00:48.88 who has the same last name as me, 00:00:48.91\00:00:50.51 my son, Christopher Steed. 00:00:50.55\00:00:52.68 And thank you, Christopher, 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.65 for being on this program again. 00:00:54.68\00:00:56.72 Not very often, once or twice in your life, 00:00:56.75\00:00:58.85 you've been a part of it. 00:00:58.89\00:01:00.76 This will be, I think my third time. 00:01:00.79\00:01:02.22 Yeah, the first time you were just a little kid 00:01:02.26\00:01:04.09 I had you as a walk on cameo 00:01:04.13\00:01:06.76 and I remember afterwards I had two or three letters 00:01:06.80\00:01:09.63 from elderly ladies 00:01:09.66\00:01:11.67 and one of them says that dear boy 00:01:11.70\00:01:13.97 and that resonated with me. 00:01:14.00\00:01:17.14 But apart from good thoughts that you have, 00:01:17.17\00:01:20.71 I think it's great to have a young person 00:01:20.74\00:01:23.04 talking about religious liberty. 00:01:23.08\00:01:24.81 You know, I'm a teenager inside still 00:01:24.85\00:01:26.95 but things have moved on unknown to me, 00:01:26.98\00:01:29.72 and a lot of us working with religious liberty here 00:01:29.75\00:01:32.42 are not necessarily senior citizens, 00:01:32.45\00:01:34.92 but middle-aged people. 00:01:34.96\00:01:37.19 So we need to know what young people think. 00:01:37.23\00:01:41.40 I want to talk on this program a bit about 00:01:41.43\00:01:44.63 religious liberty around the world. 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.97 But, you know, let's talk about an example 00:01:48.00\00:01:50.67 that you were sharing before. 00:01:50.71\00:01:53.91 We need to somehow disarm people 00:01:53.94\00:01:57.18 because a lot of people have prejudice 00:01:57.21\00:01:59.21 either against our particular version 00:01:59.25\00:02:01.35 of Christianity 00:02:01.38\00:02:02.72 because, and prejudice by 00:02:02.75\00:02:05.05 and large comes from a lack of knowledge. 00:02:05.09\00:02:07.82 So it's a prejudgment. That's what prejudice means. 00:02:07.86\00:02:11.73 But beyond that, 00:02:11.76\00:02:13.43 different religions have prejudice. 00:02:13.46\00:02:15.10 And again, most people that are nominally part 00:02:15.13\00:02:18.80 of the Buddhism or Islam or Christianity, 00:02:18.83\00:02:22.84 they know almost nothing, 00:02:22.87\00:02:24.84 first of all about their own religion 00:02:24.87\00:02:26.21 and even less about another, so it's very difficult. 00:02:26.24\00:02:30.31 Tell me about a situation 00:02:30.35\00:02:31.68 where you were helping with the local church 00:02:31.71\00:02:35.68 and going door-to-door 00:02:35.72\00:02:37.05 and you've met quite well muscled prejudice. 00:02:37.09\00:02:39.79 What happened? 00:02:39.82\00:02:41.16 Well, we were doing a food pantry for shut-ins. 00:02:41.19\00:02:44.69 So people who don't normally come to church, 00:02:44.73\00:02:48.46 mostly elderly people, 00:02:48.50\00:02:50.77 who can't drive, who have limited mobility, 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.54 and I go to one of the person's doors, 00:02:53.57\00:02:55.54 I knocked on the door, 00:02:55.57\00:02:57.41 I was about to turn around and leave 00:02:57.44\00:02:59.27 when I hear the door just get. 00:02:59.31\00:03:01.01 I thought the door got ripped off his hinges. 00:03:01.04\00:03:03.48 And I see this, 00:03:03.51\00:03:04.85 he was about 6'5", 6'6" massive bodybuilder guy 00:03:04.88\00:03:10.15 just standing there glaring down at me 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.62 in the roughest, roughest tone he had. 00:03:12.65\00:03:15.32 He goes, "What are you doing at my door?" 00:03:15.36\00:03:19.33 I was 15-16 years old. I'm just... 00:03:19.36\00:03:21.26 And so I gained confidence. 00:03:24.33\00:03:27.27 I say, "I'm here delivering food." 00:03:27.30\00:03:29.70 For shut-ins. For shut-ins. 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.77 And he looks at me, gives me a look. 00:03:31.81\00:03:34.84 He says, "What organization?" 00:03:34.88\00:03:36.21 I said, "I'm with the Seventh-day 00:03:36.24\00:03:37.58 Adventist Church." 00:03:37.61\00:03:38.95 "Oh, come on in," just like that he changed. 00:03:38.98\00:03:40.85 And you hear his mother 00:03:40.88\00:03:42.52 saying something behind the scenes. 00:03:42.55\00:03:43.99 His mother calls, "Tye, who's at the door?" 00:03:44.02\00:03:48.29 And just this very, very small voice in the back. 00:03:48.32\00:03:52.59 It was like almost like his conscience 00:03:52.63\00:03:54.26 that I could hear. 00:03:54.30\00:03:55.70 And I say I'm from her church. We go to church together. 00:03:55.73\00:04:00.04 She used to come to church, 00:04:00.07\00:04:01.40 but we haven't seen her for a while. 00:04:01.44\00:04:02.87 And we got a letter or a call from her saying that 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.17 she needs some help with food. 00:04:06.21\00:04:08.44 So we're bringing food from our church. 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.01 He said, "Oh, I thought the bag, 00:04:10.05\00:04:11.78 I thought you were going to sell me something 00:04:11.81\00:04:13.52 or the other 00:04:13.55\00:04:14.88 and I was just not having it today." 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.38 And I was like, "Well, here I am." 00:04:16.42\00:04:19.09 So almost the implication of violent oppositions 00:04:19.12\00:04:23.59 turned into great friendliness 00:04:23.63\00:04:24.96 when he understood what was going on. 00:04:24.99\00:04:26.33 And that's usually the key. 00:04:26.36\00:04:27.93 I can remember many years ago, 00:04:27.96\00:04:30.20 well, not many, several years ago now. 00:04:30.23\00:04:33.20 We were in Israel on a tour, 3ABN tour actually to Israel. 00:04:33.23\00:04:38.17 With Jim Gilley. 00:04:38.21\00:04:39.57 With Jim Gilley, who was heading up 3ABN 00:04:39.61\00:04:42.44 at that time, 00:04:42.48\00:04:43.81 and, but one scene that stuck in my mind, 00:04:43.85\00:04:46.48 it was wonderful. 00:04:46.51\00:04:47.85 We went to the so-called Wailing Wall. 00:04:47.88\00:04:50.29 The Jews don't call it the Wailing Wall. 00:04:50.32\00:04:52.09 It's the Western Wall. 00:04:52.12\00:04:53.79 Foundations basically that they dug down 00:04:53.82\00:04:56.52 after the Six-Day War, war and uncovered 00:04:56.56\00:04:59.73 and it's a real site of pilgrimage and prayers 00:04:59.76\00:05:04.10 and we were there Friday night, remember at sunset? 00:05:04.13\00:05:06.57 I do. 00:05:06.60\00:05:08.57 It was a wonderful time, they blew the shofar, 00:05:08.60\00:05:12.37 the ram's horn, 00:05:12.41\00:05:14.98 it was an elemental sort of feeling 00:05:15.01\00:05:16.64 and the excitement was palpable. 00:05:16.68\00:05:18.85 And you know, a lot of, 00:05:18.88\00:05:21.18 even Adventists who understand the Old Testament 00:05:21.22\00:05:23.89 more than many Christians, 00:05:23.92\00:05:27.26 you know, we don't always understand 00:05:27.29\00:05:29.72 Jewish sensibilities 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.89 and many Christians have great troubles, right? 00:05:31.93\00:05:34.70 You've been to Germany and I think you picked up there 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.23 some of the history with the Nazis 00:05:37.27\00:05:39.73 and that where they just turned on the Jews, right? 00:05:39.77\00:05:42.10 That's a horrific case. 00:05:42.14\00:05:45.07 So I thought it was wonderful there, 00:05:45.11\00:05:47.54 we were at that exciting moment close of or opening of Sabbath, 00:05:47.58\00:05:52.65 and spontaneously 00:05:52.68\00:05:56.25 the young Israeli men started dancing in a circle. 00:05:56.28\00:05:59.89 Remember, you joined in? 00:05:59.92\00:06:01.26 They handed out this little pamphlet about 00:06:01.29\00:06:05.99 the size of a iPhone. 00:06:06.03\00:06:08.76 And it had the Hebrew song. 00:06:08.80\00:06:12.63 And then underneath it had it in English. 00:06:12.67\00:06:14.80 Well, in... 00:06:14.84\00:06:17.77 I wouldn't say English, it was Hebrew, 00:06:17.81\00:06:19.14 but in a way I could read it. 00:06:19.17\00:06:21.98 And so I started singing along with them. 00:06:22.01\00:06:24.45 - And... - Well and it was... 00:06:24.48\00:06:26.78 It was like a cyclone, it was just like a tornado 00:06:26.82\00:06:28.52 just growing bigger and bigger and... 00:06:28.55\00:06:31.45 They were so happy and exalted. 00:06:31.49\00:06:34.02 And it was a little bit of a mixture, 00:06:34.06\00:06:36.06 to be honest of Jewish national identity 00:06:36.09\00:06:40.20 and Jewish faith. 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.06 But it was very spiritual 00:06:42.10\00:06:43.43 because this was the beginning of the Sabbath, 00:06:43.47\00:06:45.17 and how you joined in and I thought, 00:06:45.20\00:06:46.87 man, he looked so at home there and they were, 00:06:46.90\00:06:48.97 they accepted you fully 00:06:49.00\00:06:50.34 and you were wearing a little yarmulke... 00:06:50.37\00:06:51.71 I had skull cap. 00:06:51.74\00:06:53.07 That Jim Gilley had given you 00:06:53.11\00:06:54.44 and because we don't wear a yarmulke, 00:06:54.48\00:06:55.81 but it's very biblical. 00:06:55.84\00:06:57.18 I mean, it talks about covering your head 00:06:57.21\00:06:58.55 when you pray and so on. 00:06:58.58\00:06:59.91 So it's a sign of prayer respect, 00:06:59.95\00:07:02.85 but I thought that was a wonderful moment 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.92 of a spiritual affinity not, 00:07:04.95\00:07:08.12 you know, he might not know much about it. 00:07:08.16\00:07:10.36 But you know, I grew up where we were scared silly 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.46 of an ecumenical syncretism. 00:07:12.49\00:07:15.06 Syncretism is a word where you, you come together when you, 00:07:15.10\00:07:19.20 you just negate 00:07:19.23\00:07:20.57 and don't care about deeps doctrinal 00:07:20.60\00:07:23.24 or spiritual differences. 00:07:23.27\00:07:24.61 They're important. 00:07:24.64\00:07:25.97 You can't just give them away and say, 00:07:26.01\00:07:27.34 "We're fine, you know, God loves us. 00:07:27.38\00:07:28.71 I love you." It's not that simple. 00:07:28.74\00:07:30.95 But as far as the brotherhood of men 00:07:30.98\00:07:32.78 and an understanding 00:07:32.81\00:07:34.15 of someone else's genuine seeking of God 00:07:34.18\00:07:37.79 that should be respected. 00:07:37.82\00:07:39.15 And we have that in common often. 00:07:39.19\00:07:41.12 And I thought that was a wonderful moment. 00:07:41.16\00:07:43.69 And I'm positive 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.06 that's something you'll remember forever, right? 00:07:45.09\00:07:46.49 Well, one thing I clearly remember is 00:07:46.53\00:07:49.60 I was, I didn't, 00:07:49.63\00:07:50.97 at first I didn't want to jump in, but you know... 00:07:51.00\00:07:54.00 I remember pushing you. 00:07:54.04\00:07:55.40 You had to push me into the crowd. 00:07:55.44\00:07:57.27 But once I got in, the guy that was that, 00:07:57.31\00:08:00.61 actually he pushed, 00:08:00.64\00:08:02.11 my dad pushed me. 00:08:02.14\00:08:03.48 And one of the guys 00:08:03.51\00:08:04.85 wraps his arm around me, pulls me in, 00:08:04.88\00:08:06.95 and I just felt these two strong arms on me 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.92 and I just felt the electricity. 00:08:09.95\00:08:12.39 It was almost like, 00:08:12.42\00:08:16.22 just spinning in that circle just singing 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.26 was just phenomenal and just awe... 00:08:19.29\00:08:23.77 It's eye opening to me on how, 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.63 you know, how these people have been 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.37 through pretty much hell and torture 00:08:28.40\00:08:31.87 through Egypt, 00:08:31.91\00:08:33.91 through the Hitler and the Nazis, 00:08:33.94\00:08:36.68 even in more modern times the persecution they have. 00:08:36.71\00:08:39.68 Well, one thing that I mentioned recently, 00:08:39.71\00:08:41.42 you might not know about, 00:08:41.45\00:08:42.78 but it might have in history in the Middle Ages 00:08:42.82\00:08:45.79 when the plague fell. 00:08:45.82\00:08:47.16 And you know, we're in a little plague now 00:08:47.19\00:08:49.02 with the COVID. 00:08:49.06\00:08:50.99 People started looking for culprits 00:08:51.03\00:08:53.60 and the Jews were dying too, but maybe not as much 00:08:53.63\00:08:56.30 because certain health regulations 00:08:56.33\00:08:57.83 in the Old Testament 00:08:57.87\00:08:59.20 would clearly protect you a bit. 00:08:59.23\00:09:00.84 So they started saying 00:09:00.87\00:09:02.20 that Jews were poisoning the world 00:09:02.24\00:09:03.57 and causing the plague. 00:09:03.61\00:09:04.94 And in one city, 00:09:04.97\00:09:07.98 I think it was in France, 00:09:08.01\00:09:10.08 3,000 Jews were burned alive. 00:09:10.11\00:09:13.21 So yes, they've often been picked upon, 00:09:13.25\00:09:15.72 because their faith is very visible. 00:09:15.75\00:09:19.25 It was a statement in the ancient Romans, 00:09:19.29\00:09:22.76 they said no other group were as dismissive 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.96 of the ancient gods as the Jews. 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.26 Well, that's sort of true, 00:09:27.30\00:09:28.63 but it's pretty good negative spin, 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.70 they were committed to their God. 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.54 Yeah, so that was an experience. 00:09:33.57\00:09:34.90 So what I want to bring out 00:09:34.94\00:09:36.97 and you know, sort of a semi travelogue, 00:09:37.01\00:09:39.34 but the world 00:09:39.37\00:09:40.71 is an interesting array of people 00:09:40.74\00:09:42.41 reaching in their own way to God 00:09:42.44\00:09:44.25 and I don't think they're all equal. 00:09:44.28\00:09:46.38 But I think equally 00:09:46.41\00:09:47.75 all human beings have an inclination 00:09:47.78\00:09:50.69 to seek the divine and God planted it within us. 00:09:50.72\00:09:53.86 And it's a privilege of us 00:09:53.89\00:09:56.46 to share a biblical clarity on that, isn't it? 00:09:56.49\00:10:00.33 It is. 00:10:00.36\00:10:01.70 And I know what impressed you or anybody that goes to Israel, 00:10:01.73\00:10:06.67 and even to Turkey in places 00:10:06.70\00:10:09.94 that Paul traveled on his tours. 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.67 You know you see how vitally important 00:10:12.71\00:10:15.28 the origin of Christianity was 00:10:15.31\00:10:17.68 and the battles they went through 00:10:17.71\00:10:19.58 and in many ways 00:10:19.61\00:10:20.95 they're still the battles of today. 00:10:20.98\00:10:23.82 What did you think when we went to Turkey 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.55 which I think I've explained it to you, 00:10:25.59\00:10:28.32 but maybe even some of our viewers 00:10:28.36\00:10:29.76 don't realize, 00:10:29.79\00:10:31.13 Turkey today is a overwhelming majority 00:10:31.16\00:10:33.96 Islamic State, 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.26 it's not a an Islamic Republic. 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.97 It's a democracy of sorts. 00:10:39.00\00:10:42.04 After Kemal Ataturk 00:10:42.07\00:10:43.84 following World War 1 took over, 00:10:43.87\00:10:47.04 he westernized it 00:10:47.08\00:10:48.51 and public elements of Islam would diminish. 00:10:48.54\00:10:52.11 They're not allowed to wear the head coverings 00:10:52.15\00:10:54.05 and things like that 00:10:54.08\00:10:55.42 because they wanted to appear Western, 00:10:55.45\00:10:56.79 but it's a deeply Islamic country, 00:10:56.82\00:10:58.15 but most people don't realize 00:10:58.19\00:10:59.52 it was the seed of Christianity. 00:10:59.55\00:11:02.02 When the Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity, 00:11:02.06\00:11:05.39 he moved the capital of the Roman Empire 00:11:05.43\00:11:07.56 to Constantinople. 00:11:07.60\00:11:08.93 It was the first Christian city in the world. 00:11:08.96\00:11:12.00 And remember going to Hagia Sophia Museum now 00:11:12.03\00:11:15.47 after being converted to a mosque, 00:11:15.50\00:11:16.91 but it was the original structure 00:11:16.94\00:11:20.54 of Christianity, it predates St. Peters. 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.04 St. Peters is the Roman Catholic Church. 00:11:23.08\00:11:26.08 But Hagia Sophia was the first major cathedral 00:11:26.11\00:11:30.45 of Christianity. 00:11:30.49\00:11:33.12 What did you think about that, getting a sense of the roots 00:11:33.15\00:11:35.52 that goes back about 1,500 years? 00:11:35.56\00:11:40.43 Well, I remember walking in and just looking straight up 00:11:40.46\00:11:45.83 and all I saw was a ginormous dome, 00:11:45.87\00:11:49.07 and the paintings 00:11:49.10\00:11:50.44 and everything that were on there, 00:11:50.47\00:11:51.97 the architecture and everything was beautiful. 00:11:52.01\00:11:54.84 But being in the birthplace of... 00:11:54.88\00:11:59.21 Well, I won't say the birthplace. 00:11:59.25\00:12:01.15 In some ways, it's the political birthplace 00:12:01.18\00:12:03.42 because Constantine skewed Christianity a bit, 00:12:03.45\00:12:05.95 but it was at that time it was purer than it became 00:12:05.99\00:12:09.76 and let's make your comment about... 00:12:09.79\00:12:13.06 Being at the... At origin point. 00:12:13.09\00:12:14.73 Political birthplace of Christianity 00:12:14.76\00:12:19.07 was just, 00:12:19.10\00:12:22.54 it brought a whole new light on Christianity 00:12:22.57\00:12:26.64 that I had not seen before. 00:12:26.68\00:12:28.31 In a country that has now been, I wouldn't say overtaken, 00:12:28.34\00:12:33.75 but that is now majority Muslim 00:12:33.78\00:12:37.32 and Sikh faith that are there. 00:12:37.35\00:12:40.72 Well, they're not Sikhs. It's... 00:12:40.76\00:12:43.96 There are some Christians still. 00:12:43.99\00:12:45.36 This is the Coptic Christians in that general area, 00:12:45.39\00:12:49.43 but they're mostly Muslims. 00:12:49.46\00:12:52.13 And seeing how the Muslim and Christian though for them, 00:12:52.17\00:12:57.54 there are pretty much there as one, 00:12:57.57\00:13:02.78 you see Christians and Muslims hanging out. 00:13:02.81\00:13:05.61 It's interesting even though we get that image 00:13:05.65\00:13:08.02 in post 9/11 in the US, 00:13:08.05\00:13:10.65 there's not a lot of direct confrontation 00:13:10.69\00:13:13.19 in Turkey between religious faiths. 00:13:13.22\00:13:15.36 Now in Egypt, which we didn't go to, 00:13:15.39\00:13:19.09 the Arab Spring was kicked off with direct persecution 00:13:19.13\00:13:22.43 and attacks on Christians by Muslims. 00:13:22.46\00:13:26.30 But what you're getting at 00:13:26.33\00:13:27.77 I've tried to say on this program before, 00:13:27.80\00:13:31.97 it's worth remembering that the Middle East as a whole 00:13:32.01\00:13:34.84 was the birthplace of Christianity. 00:13:34.88\00:13:37.08 And today, the Middle East as a whole is Islam. 00:13:37.11\00:13:41.42 There was a massive displacement 00:13:41.45\00:13:43.08 of one religion by another and not always peacefully. 00:13:43.12\00:13:46.25 And now in this modern era, 00:13:46.29\00:13:49.39 most particularly since the Arab Spring, 00:13:49.42\00:13:52.16 what we're really seeing 00:13:52.19\00:13:53.63 is the final expulsion of Christianity 00:13:53.66\00:13:56.53 from the Middle East. 00:13:56.56\00:13:57.90 That is a massive moment. 00:13:57.93\00:14:00.00 And there's a lot of persecution involved, 00:14:00.04\00:14:02.00 but a lot of it is subtle. 00:14:02.04\00:14:03.71 It's marginalization of people of Christian faith, 00:14:03.74\00:14:07.51 which is not good, is it? 00:14:07.54\00:14:09.78 You know, you're talking about, 00:14:09.81\00:14:11.15 you're accepting and being integrated socially, 00:14:11.18\00:14:14.48 in Israel into their sort of faith, 00:14:14.52\00:14:19.25 culture, that's fine, you know, 00:14:19.29\00:14:21.56 and that doesn't lead to wars and fighting. 00:14:21.59\00:14:23.86 That's, I think God smiles upon that. 00:14:23.89\00:14:26.93 That's an openness. 00:14:26.96\00:14:29.50 But it is worth remembering that the Middle East 00:14:29.53\00:14:32.27 is generally is the scene of conflict at the moment. 00:14:32.30\00:14:37.61 Where else do you remember? 00:14:37.64\00:14:39.91 You remember we went then to Asia, 00:14:39.94\00:14:42.41 to Southeast Asia to Bangkok? 00:14:42.44\00:14:45.45 You remember worshiping on Sabbath there? 00:14:45.48\00:14:48.68 Sort of. 00:14:48.72\00:14:50.75 We went to a church 00:14:50.79\00:14:52.12 near the Bangkok Adventist Hospital. 00:14:52.15\00:14:53.99 Remember we walked from? That's right. 00:14:54.02\00:14:56.73 Now did you feel any sense of threat, 00:14:56.76\00:14:59.96 it was a difficult moment 00:15:00.00\00:15:04.47 to worship in that country? 00:15:04.50\00:15:05.90 None at all. Absolutely none. 00:15:05.93\00:15:08.20 So that was a plus experience. We need to take a break. 00:15:08.24\00:15:10.61 We'll be back. 00:15:10.64\00:15:11.97 Stay with us, 00:15:12.01\00:15:13.34 talk a little bit about a world of religious practice 00:15:13.38\00:15:16.75 and what that means 00:15:16.78\00:15:18.11 for a person of Christian faith. 00:15:18.15\00:15:19.48 How do you relate to it? Stay with us. 00:15:19.51\00:15:21.42
