Welcome back to Liberty Insider 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 and before the break 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 with my very special guest, 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.23 a fellow Steed, my son, Christopher. 00:00:06.27\00:00:09.67 We were getting your perspective, 00:00:09.70\00:00:11.81 which is a younger person's perspective 00:00:11.84\00:00:13.68 on living through COVID-19, and from a particular 00:00:13.71\00:00:17.25 vantage point of practicing faith 00:00:17.28\00:00:19.45 and sharing faith 00:00:19.48\00:00:20.82 as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. 00:00:20.85\00:00:23.82 You had a little bit of a chance 00:00:23.85\00:00:25.72 a few years ago to share. 00:00:25.75\00:00:28.02 You were in Guatemala in the back blocks at a... 00:00:28.06\00:00:32.29 I think it was a self-supporting school 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.70 where they were... 00:00:34.73\00:00:36.06 You were pretty much in the jungle, right? 00:00:36.10\00:00:37.43 We were in the jungle. 00:00:37.47\00:00:39.03 I remember one night waking up 00:00:39.07\00:00:41.47 feeling something crawling across my bed 00:00:41.50\00:00:43.20 and there was a tarantula about this big, 00:00:43.24\00:00:45.51 just crawling across my lap. 00:00:45.54\00:00:47.28 So we were definitely deep in the jungle. 00:00:47.31\00:00:50.45 Yeah. 00:00:50.48\00:00:51.81 And I've never asked this before, 00:00:51.85\00:00:53.85 but what did that tell you about 00:00:53.88\00:00:55.95 how important faith 00:00:55.98\00:00:57.59 is for people that have less access 00:00:57.62\00:01:01.16 to the things that we know of modern life. 00:01:01.19\00:01:04.26 What did you pick up on that regard? 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.00 One example is everybody 00:01:08.03\00:01:10.57 there was a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:01:10.60\00:01:11.93 well, mostly Seventh-day Adventist. 00:01:11.97\00:01:13.30 There were a few Catholic... 00:01:13.34\00:01:14.67 other students there that were Catholic. 00:01:14.70\00:01:16.30 This is Roman Catholic culture. It is. 00:01:16.34\00:01:18.41 Very, very so, very much so. 00:01:18.44\00:01:21.01 You can just go down to the market 00:01:21.04\00:01:22.38 and they sell the rosaries, 00:01:22.41\00:01:24.01 and the priest's caps 00:01:24.05\00:01:26.61 for Mother Mary 00:01:26.65\00:01:28.38 and everything like that. 00:01:28.42\00:01:30.22 But especially at the school where I was, 00:01:30.25\00:01:32.95 every morning we had a worship 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.39 and before every meal, 00:01:35.42\00:01:36.76 we would gather in the main lunch hall, 00:01:36.79\00:01:38.56 everybody would gather, 00:01:38.59\00:01:40.03 we'd circle around the entire lunch hall 00:01:40.06\00:01:42.20 and we would pray together. 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.47 And then every afternoon we'd have an afternoon worship 00:01:44.50\00:01:46.80 or I wouldn't certainly say it's a worship, 00:01:46.84\00:01:49.00 an afternoon reflection. 00:01:49.04\00:01:51.57 And then every evening 00:01:51.61\00:01:52.94 we would have a very small vespers, 00:01:52.97\00:01:56.44 we would sing a few songs, 00:01:56.48\00:01:58.65 we would hear like a little story, 00:01:58.68\00:02:01.22 and we would pray together, 00:02:01.25\00:02:03.12 we'd fellowship together, and then we'd go have dinner. 00:02:03.15\00:02:06.19 And then we would go along with our doing homework, 00:02:06.22\00:02:08.89 preparing for another class, you know, doing the next day. 00:02:08.92\00:02:12.06 And then on Fridays, for example, 00:02:12.09\00:02:14.13 our Fridays at the campus were cleaning day, basically. 00:02:14.16\00:02:17.90 So we had one or two classes in the morning, 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.70 and then in the afternoon, we would fellowship together 00:02:19.73\00:02:22.27 and then each teacher would get a group of about 00:02:22.30\00:02:25.04 four or five students. 00:02:25.07\00:02:27.11 And we would go and say, 00:02:27.14\00:02:28.48 "Okay, so today, you're doing this, 00:02:28.51\00:02:30.71 you're doing this, you're doing this." 00:02:30.75\00:02:32.08 And as we were fellowshipping together, 00:02:32.11\00:02:33.45 we were singing together, 00:02:33.48\00:02:35.02 always singing hymns, always, you know, 00:02:35.05\00:02:37.99 everybody always had smiles on their faces, 00:02:38.02\00:02:40.26 even when it was pouring down rain. 00:02:40.29\00:02:43.22 Everybody was still outside singing. 00:02:43.26\00:02:44.59 And you were in a place far from the city 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.03 with all of the types of entertainments 00:02:47.06\00:02:49.50 that young people typically want 00:02:49.53\00:02:51.83 and perhaps socially, they think they need. 00:02:51.87\00:02:54.97 They didn't have much. 00:02:55.00\00:02:56.87 Generally poor, I mean, poverties and wealth, 00:02:56.91\00:03:00.71 they're relative things, but from your perspective, 00:03:00.74\00:03:03.14 you can see they didn't have much, did they? 00:03:03.18\00:03:05.48 But did that sort of signal to you 00:03:05.51\00:03:08.32 that that religious faith 00:03:08.35\00:03:10.69 and spiritual connection with God 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.25 or higher power and sharing that 00:03:13.29\00:03:14.62 with other people, 00:03:14.66\00:03:15.99 how important that is for someone's life? 00:03:16.02\00:03:18.09 No, absolutely. 00:03:18.13\00:03:19.46 And in the development of a young person? 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.23 For the development of a young person 00:03:21.26\00:03:23.73 it is absolutely necessary to be able to go to church, 00:03:23.77\00:03:28.50 to be able to fellowship with fellow Christians. 00:03:28.54\00:03:32.37 I know of people who grew up in the church, 00:03:32.41\00:03:35.01 but their church was mostly older generation, 00:03:35.04\00:03:39.05 and they never really made a connection 00:03:39.08\00:03:41.55 with anybody there because of the age gap. 00:03:41.58\00:03:45.62 And they've left the church, 00:03:45.65\00:03:47.96 some of them, or some of them have 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.62 gone to different churches 00:03:49.66\00:03:51.36 but mostly if, for me especially, 00:03:51.39\00:03:54.20 at the church we go to, 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.73 there are a few young people 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.70 but there aren't as many as in some churches 00:03:58.73\00:04:01.87 I've been to, 00:04:01.90\00:04:03.24 and there is definitely a spiritual energy 00:04:03.27\00:04:07.41 that is lacking. 00:04:07.44\00:04:10.61 I believe that the young people 00:04:10.65\00:04:11.98 in the church bring that energy 00:04:12.01\00:04:13.38 that we don't normally get. 00:04:13.42\00:04:15.78 For example, at Highland View Academy Church 00:04:15.82\00:04:18.42 where I graduated from, Highland View Academy, 00:04:18.45\00:04:21.79 the church there, every Sabbath is full, 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.59 almost full of students. 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.59 Because they're required to attend. 00:04:26.63\00:04:27.96 Yeah. But still... 00:04:28.00\00:04:30.60 No, your point is correct. 00:04:30.63\00:04:32.00 But, yes, I'm fishing for something 00:04:32.03\00:04:33.74 that hardly anybody seems to know the answer, 00:04:33.77\00:04:36.24 but they're all asking the question. 00:04:36.27\00:04:39.14 Why is it that many of our churches, 00:04:39.17\00:04:43.68 many other churches, 00:04:43.71\00:04:45.18 it's not a denominational thing, 00:04:45.21\00:04:47.18 it's certainly a problem 00:04:47.22\00:04:48.55 within almost all of Christianity. 00:04:48.58\00:04:50.39 Why is it that young people 00:04:50.42\00:04:52.89 are not often very attracted to religion, 00:04:52.92\00:04:55.52 they're not very involved, and there's the danger, 00:04:55.56\00:05:01.23 you can see it in Roman Catholic churches. 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.40 You go into, I'm asking it, 00:05:03.43\00:05:05.10 mostly old people, 00:05:05.13\00:05:07.24 which means that when that generation goes, 00:05:07.27\00:05:09.60 who will be the next? 00:05:09.64\00:05:11.24 Why is that happening? What could be changed? 00:05:11.27\00:05:14.28 What's missing that young people 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.14 are not more involved, 00:05:16.18\00:05:17.51 and more evident, and more attracted? 00:05:17.55\00:05:20.05 I believe it's the fact that when you go to church, 00:05:20.08\00:05:23.55 everybody is sitting in a pew, 00:05:23.59\00:05:25.15 suit and tie, and it's all, I mean, music for example, 00:05:25.19\00:05:30.06 music attracts young people. 00:05:30.09\00:05:32.23 If you think about it, 00:05:32.26\00:05:33.60 if you go to Coachella or something, 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.40 it's just thousands, and thousands, 00:05:35.43\00:05:37.57 and thousands of just young people there 00:05:37.60\00:05:39.47 because it's the music that draws them. 00:05:39.50\00:05:43.54 From being, I'm 22 years old growing up in the church, 00:05:43.57\00:05:47.31 when I was younger, you know, 00:05:47.34\00:05:49.34 singing Jesus Loves Me, This Little Light of Mine, 00:05:49.38\00:05:53.72 those songs attracted me to go to Sabbath school 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.35 and be with my friends, be listening to my teacher. 00:05:56.38\00:05:59.95 Growing up going through the different classes, 00:05:59.99\00:06:02.86 and then finally being in the church 00:06:02.89\00:06:05.33 and understanding more, 00:06:05.36\00:06:07.80 growing up singing Amazing Grace, 00:06:07.83\00:06:10.33 playing on the saxophone, playing the piano, 00:06:10.37\00:06:13.90 listening on the radio, I mean, 00:06:13.94\00:06:15.34 I've heard the change in music 00:06:15.37\00:06:18.34 from when I was a kid to now as I'm a young adult, 00:06:18.37\00:06:22.61 the music has become more contemporary on this, 00:06:22.64\00:06:24.61 especially on some of the Adventist radio stations, 00:06:24.65\00:06:26.98 like there's a Adventist radio station 90.5. 00:06:27.02\00:06:29.58 Is it necessary for a young person 00:06:29.62\00:06:32.12 that the music becomes more contemporary, 00:06:32.15\00:06:35.92 or more relevant, or are they the same, 00:06:35.96\00:06:38.19 or what is the difference? 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.20 I believe... Tricky question. 00:06:40.23\00:06:43.00 Honestly, I believe that the music does not need to be 00:06:43.03\00:06:47.44 more contemporary, 00:06:47.47\00:06:49.30 it just needs to be sung by young people 00:06:49.34\00:06:52.51 so that the young people can see 00:06:52.54\00:06:53.88 "Hey, you know, 00:06:53.91\00:06:55.24 if let's say Josh Groban for example, 00:06:55.28\00:06:59.38 I guess he's a young guy. 00:06:59.41\00:07:01.62 He was once, no, he is. 00:07:01.65\00:07:03.15 He is still young I think. He appeals to the young people. 00:07:03.18\00:07:04.62 He appeals to our sense of music. 00:07:04.65\00:07:08.62 And his song like, he sang Amazing Grace one time. 00:07:08.66\00:07:13.29 And, you know, 00:07:13.33\00:07:14.66 I've heard it sung by, by Andrea Bocelli, 00:07:14.70\00:07:17.27 I've heard it sung by many, many famous people, 00:07:17.30\00:07:20.30 but I really didn't... 00:07:20.34\00:07:22.20 It didn't appeal to me when they sang it. 00:07:22.24\00:07:24.37 But when he sang, 00:07:24.41\00:07:25.74 it's coming out of a voice 00:07:25.77\00:07:27.18 of a younger man and it just was like, 00:07:27.21\00:07:30.55 "Whoa," if this guy likes that song, 00:07:30.58\00:07:33.18 maybe I can listen to it more. 00:07:33.21\00:07:35.38 You know what I get out of that? 00:07:35.42\00:07:36.89 And it could inspire you... 00:07:36.92\00:07:39.35 young people need role models, and yes, 00:07:39.39\00:07:42.02 they need to respect older people, 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.53 but if they see other young people 00:07:43.56\00:07:46.33 showing an interest in religion and getting involved, 00:07:46.36\00:07:48.30 that will draw more of their peers. 00:07:48.33\00:07:50.80 So you or any young person can be a leader. 00:07:50.83\00:07:53.30 If you decide, you know, 00:07:53.34\00:07:56.04 "Christ is important in my life. 00:07:56.07\00:07:57.51 I'm going to do something about it." 00:07:57.54\00:07:59.27 Others will follow you. 00:07:59.31\00:08:00.94 And maybe that's what's missing, 00:08:00.98\00:08:02.31 a sense of initiative. 00:08:02.34\00:08:06.18 And the older people are often blaming themselves, 00:08:06.21\00:08:09.12 and you sort of slipped it in there that 00:08:09.15\00:08:11.95 they don't involve young people enough. 00:08:11.99\00:08:14.46 And it's probably true but what bothers me 00:08:14.49\00:08:17.26 and you've heard me go on about it, 00:08:17.29\00:08:18.83 I don't think that it's quite appropriate 00:08:18.86\00:08:21.90 for all the people to pass off the church 00:08:21.93\00:08:24.10 and all of its activities to young people 00:08:24.13\00:08:26.63 who have no real interest in religion or not, you know, 00:08:26.67\00:08:31.44 treating it with the right respect. 00:08:31.47\00:08:33.01 But for young people 00:08:33.04\00:08:34.51 that are showing a yearning toward God, 00:08:34.54\00:08:37.45 they should be included 00:08:37.48\00:08:39.41 and as much as possible given leadership roles 00:08:39.45\00:08:43.08 because that's how you learn. 00:08:43.12\00:08:44.75 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:08:44.79\00:08:46.45 By doing, you learn much more 00:08:46.49\00:08:47.82 by doing than being just told or demanded. 00:08:47.86\00:08:51.96 I agree with that one. 00:08:51.99\00:08:54.83 But thanks for your input and, 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.23 you know, I'm leading you a bit 00:08:56.26\00:08:57.60 but I think you naturally said that, 00:08:57.63\00:08:59.03 you know, you're like all the young people out there. 00:08:59.07\00:09:01.30 I was young once, I remember. 00:09:01.34\00:09:02.67 None of us are perfect. 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.04 You've had your ups and downs. 00:09:04.07\00:09:05.64 But, you know, I'm praying for you 00:09:05.67\00:09:07.84 and all people of faith pray 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.78 for each other and in particular, 00:09:10.81\00:09:12.35 for the younger generation. 00:09:12.38\00:09:16.05 You know, you weren't there 00:09:16.08\00:09:18.49 at my last camp meeting I went to, 00:09:18.52\00:09:20.36 but I preached from the prayer of Jesus in John 17, 00:09:20.39\00:09:24.36 I think it is. 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.89 And He said, "You know, I'm praying for these men." 00:09:25.93\00:09:28.66 He says, "You know, they know that you sent Me, 00:09:28.70\00:09:32.53 and they're faithful." 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.10 And I'm thinking, 00:09:34.14\00:09:35.47 Jesus has a pretty positive attitude. 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.51 They had already shown many, many times 00:09:37.54\00:09:40.04 that they didn't quite understand. 00:09:40.08\00:09:41.94 And when He was betrayed, 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.31 they ran like crazy, but He thought well of them. 00:09:43.35\00:09:45.41 But then He says, 00:09:45.45\00:09:46.78 and I'm not just praying for them, 00:09:46.82\00:09:48.15 I'm praying for all who believe. 00:09:48.18\00:09:50.92 So we have to set that forward reaching approach 00:09:50.95\00:09:54.92 with young people to see 00:09:54.96\00:09:56.29 for the next generation to lead them on. 00:09:56.32\00:09:59.36 So we got a little bit of time left, 00:09:59.39\00:10:01.33 but let's just get back onto COVID. 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.47 Where do you think we go from now? 00:10:03.50\00:10:05.07 Because none of us know 00:10:05.10\00:10:06.43 but the chances are pretty high. 00:10:06.47\00:10:08.54 We've got another year 00:10:08.57\00:10:09.90 at least on this pandemic panic, 00:10:09.94\00:10:14.51 but maybe beyond that. 00:10:14.54\00:10:17.25 We don't shake hands anymore, 00:10:17.28\00:10:18.91 maybe social norms have changed. 00:10:18.95\00:10:22.32 Do you think religion and religious practice 00:10:22.35\00:10:24.62 can afford to be in this pullback position? 00:10:24.65\00:10:27.56 Or is it time for us to sort of, 00:10:27.59\00:10:31.39 as Paul says, you know, I've had so many shipwrecks, 00:10:31.43\00:10:33.56 I was beaten so many times, but, you know, 00:10:33.60\00:10:35.26 I go forward and I think he says, 00:10:35.30\00:10:38.70 for me to live is Christ, 00:10:38.73\00:10:41.74 in other words, nothing else matters. 00:10:41.77\00:10:43.34 Do you think it's time 00:10:43.37\00:10:44.71 for a sort of no holds barred witness 00:10:44.74\00:10:47.41 and tell everyone while you can approach? 00:10:47.44\00:10:50.71 I personally believe that the church does not need 00:10:50.75\00:10:54.98 to go full revolutionary stand. 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.42 I believe that we need to modify the way we do things. 00:10:58.45\00:11:03.36 Like for example, colporteuring, 00:11:03.39\00:11:04.89 door-to-door book sales, we can do virtual, 00:11:04.93\00:11:07.10 we can do distanced greetings. 00:11:07.13\00:11:10.80 Churches for example, 00:11:10.83\00:11:12.17 we could do more separated pews, 00:11:12.20\00:11:15.00 more areas to where we can view the sermon. 00:11:15.04\00:11:18.57 For youth, especially youth evangelism camp meetings. 00:11:18.61\00:11:22.58 I believe that we need to open it up more, 00:11:22.61\00:11:28.18 have it more outdoors. 00:11:28.22\00:11:31.95 COVID-19 is around 00:11:31.99\00:11:33.32 the disturbing of normal situation 00:11:33.36\00:11:35.26 and time must be dragging for young people kept at home. 00:11:35.29\00:11:39.03 Reminds me a bit of the British Gilbert 00:11:39.06\00:11:41.53 and Sullivan operator, 00:11:41.56\00:11:43.83 mockery composers in the H.M.S. 00:11:43.87\00:11:46.00 Pinafore, where there's a young boy 00:11:46.03\00:11:47.64 on a pirate ship thoroughly confused 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.04 because he's been told that he's... 00:11:50.07\00:11:52.74 not his age, but four years only counts as one 00:11:52.77\00:11:56.21 in their figuring and he didn't know 00:11:56.24\00:11:57.95 if he was young or old, or the woman 00:11:57.98\00:11:59.31 he liked was young or old. 00:11:59.35\00:12:00.85 This is true today for young people, 00:12:00.88\00:12:03.25 bored silly, perhaps confined to their homes, 00:12:03.28\00:12:06.19 and they've lost a year, 00:12:06.22\00:12:07.82 they've lost the best part of the year 00:12:07.86\00:12:09.49 for the school ceased 00:12:09.52\00:12:10.93 and who knows what happens next? 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.03 You know, it's very soon. 00:12:13.06\00:12:14.60 Not figuratively, 00:12:14.63\00:12:15.96 but in a real way the Lord will stand up, 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.03 the Bible says and say turn no more, 00:12:18.07\00:12:19.77 delay no more. 00:12:19.80\00:12:21.14 And for young people 00:12:21.17\00:12:22.50 for whom time is always important, 00:12:22.54\00:12:24.81 and for all the people who feel time's chariot, 00:12:24.84\00:12:27.98 pushing at them, rushing them forward, 00:12:28.01\00:12:29.78 this is the time for action, 00:12:29.81\00:12:31.98 this is the time to spare not, 00:12:32.01\00:12:34.75 cry aloud and proclaim that 00:12:34.78\00:12:37.02 the Lord is about to do something 00:12:37.05\00:12:39.35 and that COVID can't restrict us, 00:12:39.39\00:12:41.86 we must witness. 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.53 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:44.56\00:12:47.10
