Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.46\00:00:30.03 This is a program designed to bring you news, views 00:00:30.06\00:00:32.53 and up-to-date insights on religious liberty in the US 00:00:32.56\00:00:36.10 and around the world. 00:00:36.13\00:00:37.47 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:37.50\00:00:41.10 And my guest on this program is Elder or Pastor Alden Ho. 00:00:41.14\00:00:46.71 You're a man of the world, 00:00:46.74\00:00:49.78 born in Singapore 00:00:49.81\00:00:51.15 and lived in Canada and now pastoring, 00:00:51.18\00:00:54.35 have been pastoring in Texas, 00:00:54.38\00:00:56.45 the center of the world, right? 00:00:56.48\00:00:58.69 Jefferson, Texas, head a self supporting academy, 00:00:58.72\00:01:03.09 Jefferson Academy there. 00:01:03.12\00:01:05.76 You know, this is an interesting time 00:01:05.79\00:01:07.13 we live in. 00:01:07.16\00:01:08.50 In fact, very exciting to me. 00:01:08.53\00:01:09.86 Very crazy, yeah. 00:01:09.90\00:01:11.23 You know there's times 00:01:11.27\00:01:12.60 when I think about my bank balance, 00:01:12.63\00:01:13.97 so what I'm gonna do next year, I'm getting some of the shakes. 00:01:14.00\00:01:17.54 But as someone who loves history 00:01:17.57\00:01:20.08 and just following current events and so on, 00:01:20.11\00:01:22.88 it's amazing. 00:01:22.91\00:01:24.78 I've seen for a while but I'm more and more 00:01:24.81\00:01:26.78 reading from commentators 00:01:26.82\00:01:28.58 that it's like histories in fast motion, 00:01:28.62\00:01:30.69 things that would take decades 00:01:30.72\00:01:32.05 or longer to work out in one new cycle 00:01:32.09\00:01:34.56 or the other can produce them. 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.09 And at the moment, we're in the middle 00:01:37.13\00:01:38.66 of the COVID emergency 00:01:38.69\00:01:40.80 which I don't know 00:01:40.83\00:01:42.26 when this program is shown but likely still within it, 00:01:42.30\00:01:45.07 because I think another year at least. 00:01:45.10\00:01:49.34 What do you think though about the... 00:01:49.37\00:01:51.47 It's more or more in the foreground 00:01:51.51\00:01:53.48 but it started as the backdrop to the COVID lockdown, 00:01:53.51\00:01:56.14 people started demonstrating, 00:01:56.18\00:01:58.21 there were demonstrations, 00:01:58.25\00:02:01.95 some violence and not just 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.52 from the demonstrators, police violence. 00:02:04.55\00:02:08.66 It seems to me evocative of the '60s that 00:02:08.69\00:02:12.16 I remember very well, 1968 in particular. 00:02:12.19\00:02:16.06 Where do you think this is leading? 00:02:16.10\00:02:18.07 Is it a dangerous time? 00:02:18.10\00:02:19.47 Is it a time of opportunity or... 00:02:19.50\00:02:22.17 You know, when we look at this, 00:02:22.20\00:02:23.61 the times have certainly changed. 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.64 I mean, very much changed because I remember, 00:02:25.67\00:02:29.48 I think it was the '50s when this came out, 00:02:29.51\00:02:31.68 Andy Griffith Show, 00:02:31.71\00:02:33.28 when Andy Griffith and Barney Fife, 00:02:33.31\00:02:35.32 you know, they were dressed in their tan khakis. 00:02:35.35\00:02:40.52 Police don't dress that way anymore. 00:02:40.56\00:02:42.86 Everything is in a military format. 00:02:42.89\00:02:45.19 They've gone very much militia. 00:02:45.23\00:02:48.06 The times in which we're living is very visible in 00:02:48.10\00:02:51.70 how they're dressing, how we react, 00:02:51.73\00:02:55.30 what they're doing, 00:02:55.34\00:02:56.81 how we react to what they're doing, 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.77 and it just constantly goes back and forth. 00:02:58.81\00:03:01.61 The value of life has changed dramatically 00:03:01.64\00:03:06.35 in that time period. 00:03:06.38\00:03:07.72 And I think that 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.08 they've taken their positions to in 00:03:09.12\00:03:11.99 what they were to protect 00:03:12.02\00:03:13.56 and serve has taken on a different level as well. 00:03:13.59\00:03:16.86 You know, you're making generalizations 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.23 and, of course, 00:03:18.26\00:03:19.59 there's wonderful exceptions in these. 00:03:19.63\00:03:21.10 Sure. 00:03:21.13\00:03:22.80 Maybe it's a stretch, but I think 00:03:22.83\00:03:24.27 there's some sort of may be very scattered 00:03:24.30\00:03:26.84 around the US, you know. 00:03:26.87\00:03:28.24 There are exactly for sure. 00:03:28.27\00:03:29.70 But generally speaking, no, the US law enforcement, 00:03:29.74\00:03:33.17 even before I arrived as a teenager 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.08 had sort of morphed into... 00:03:35.11\00:03:38.08 Now it's militaristic, but it had already morphed 00:03:38.11\00:03:40.42 into sort of a wider type operation versus 00:03:40.45\00:03:46.09 I read in Liberty on this the other day verses 00:03:46.12\00:03:48.26 what still somewhat exists say in England, you know, 00:03:48.29\00:03:50.99 the bobby and on his local beating, 00:03:51.03\00:03:53.83 and he's not likely to have a gun 00:03:53.86\00:03:55.76 or use it if he has one. 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.57 The US policing is long been a law 00:03:57.60\00:04:02.00 and order brute force often 00:04:02.04\00:04:06.81 and now it's turned sort of toxic 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.18 and, yeah, there's many ways 00:04:09.21\00:04:10.81 you can track not just the militarization, 00:04:10.85\00:04:13.65 the hand me down of military technology, 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.92 it's, you can see it physically moving into law enforcement. 00:04:15.95\00:04:19.72 Local law enforcement specifically. 00:04:19.75\00:04:21.09 Yes and riot gear and so on. 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.53 I remember 20 some years ago I spent a week in Metro-Dade, 00:04:23.56\00:04:28.70 with the Metro-Dade Police in Miami doing a film. 00:04:28.73\00:04:32.13 And they took me out on the SWAT team operations 00:04:32.17\00:04:34.50 and on the helicopters and I could see then already, 00:04:34.54\00:04:36.71 it's pretty heavy stuff. 00:04:36.74\00:04:38.71 You know, when the team comes in an armored car 00:04:38.74\00:04:41.14 and they hooks a chain to your front door, 00:04:41.18\00:04:44.01 rips it off, then they go in with sonar shotguns. 00:04:44.05\00:04:46.75 That's heavy stuff. Yeah. 00:04:46.78\00:04:49.92 It's not going to get better either. 00:04:49.95\00:04:51.29 No. Certainly not. 00:04:51.32\00:04:52.65 We're at the time period right now 00:04:52.69\00:04:54.92 in this world's history that it's only going to 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.79 progressively get worse and worse. 00:04:57.83\00:04:59.59 Yeah. 00:04:59.63\00:05:00.96 And what's scary is, as our rights are fizzling 00:05:01.00\00:05:05.50 and disappearing, 00:05:05.53\00:05:07.10 they continue to walk forward with this, over those. 00:05:07.14\00:05:10.71 And you can see how it's coming. 00:05:10.74\00:05:12.21 I don't think in every regard anywhere, 00:05:12.24\00:05:15.18 but particularly in the US 00:05:15.21\00:05:16.61 is a grand master plan for repression. 00:05:16.64\00:05:20.85 I mean, some people may have it, 00:05:20.88\00:05:22.22 but I don't think so. 00:05:22.25\00:05:23.59 I think we're sort of on a tumbling series of events, 00:05:23.62\00:05:26.89 sort of suck everyone into this inevitability 00:05:26.92\00:05:29.19 and, you know, 00:05:29.22\00:05:30.56 with the present president of the US, 00:05:30.59\00:05:32.19 I think he got caught in his own 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.36 law and order sort of mantra 00:05:34.40\00:05:35.90 that sort of scared most people, 00:05:35.93\00:05:37.73 you know, flash-bang grenades 00:05:37.77\00:05:39.20 and force outside the White House 00:05:39.23\00:05:41.70 for a group of people 00:05:41.74\00:05:43.07 that were almost there just to wave to the king. 00:05:43.10\00:05:46.34 That's not a criticism, 00:05:46.37\00:05:47.71 that's an allusion to in England, 00:05:47.74\00:05:49.08 you know, I've set out front of... 00:05:49.11\00:05:51.78 I've stood out front of Buckingham Palace 00:05:51.81\00:05:53.42 a few times to see the grin of the guards 00:05:53.45\00:05:55.72 and hope to see a real personage. 00:05:55.75\00:05:58.65 You know, there's a flatter 00:05:58.69\00:06:00.06 that the people get outside the leader's home 00:06:00.09\00:06:03.53 and whether it's a king or a president. 00:06:03.56\00:06:05.43 I think people are not as ready 00:06:05.46\00:06:08.06 as they might be in other places 00:06:08.10\00:06:09.70 to hurl insults or whatever. 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.73 And I think it's very sad commentary on 00:06:11.77\00:06:15.50 where we are that the violence was used right up 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.57 front of the White House. 00:06:17.61\00:06:19.47 Very dangerous. Yeah. 00:06:19.51\00:06:21.24 And I live in the Washington area 00:06:21.28\00:06:23.24 and one of my first remembrances 00:06:23.28\00:06:25.65 of Washington in 1968, 00:06:25.68\00:06:27.48 like I was only two years into the country. 00:06:27.52\00:06:30.15 I saw Washington burning 00:06:30.19\00:06:31.99 when Martin Luther King was killed. 00:06:32.02\00:06:33.56 Most major cities in the US went up in smokes 00:06:33.59\00:06:36.32 and the nation's capital was a massive riot. 00:06:36.36\00:06:42.16 We lived about the time about maybe 12 miles 00:06:42.20\00:06:47.47 in a straight line from downtown 00:06:47.50\00:06:49.07 and the pall of smoke coming up from the city was massive. 00:06:49.10\00:06:52.64 And tens of thousands of national guard in jeeps 00:06:52.67\00:06:57.15 and all the rest, police with the tape 00:06:57.18\00:06:58.71 across the window in riot gear, 00:06:58.75\00:07:01.15 it was a city under siege. 00:07:01.18\00:07:02.88 We're not back there yet. 00:07:02.92\00:07:04.25 So that's, it's a roundabout way 00:07:04.29\00:07:05.62 to say this is a bad situation, 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.46 but I don't equate it with the incipient breakdown 00:07:07.49\00:07:12.36 of all of the models of society in '68. 00:07:12.39\00:07:15.36 It was a dangerous time. 00:07:15.40\00:07:16.73 But you said a key word. 00:07:16.77\00:07:18.20 We're not at that yet. 00:07:18.23\00:07:20.10 Now, we're heading that way. 00:07:20.14\00:07:21.47 But it's very quickly coming this way. 00:07:21.50\00:07:22.84 Right. 00:07:22.87\00:07:24.21 And it might be in a couple of months' time. 00:07:24.24\00:07:26.07 You don't know things are moving quick. 00:07:26.11\00:07:27.98 Yeah. 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.34 So, this is the time to stand up 00:07:29.38\00:07:32.08 and be candid, right? 00:07:32.11\00:07:33.62 This is the time period to actually get out 00:07:33.65\00:07:35.08 of the cities right now. 00:07:35.12\00:07:36.45 Well, yeah, we've talked about on another program, of course. 00:07:36.48\00:07:39.79 It comes from a theological point 00:07:39.82\00:07:42.52 as Seventh-day Adventists, 00:07:42.56\00:07:43.89 but I think it's just practical. 00:07:43.93\00:07:45.26 You don't want to be in harm's way. 00:07:45.29\00:07:46.63 No, certainly not. 00:07:46.66\00:07:48.83 Few years ago, I was in Buenos Aires, 00:07:48.86\00:07:54.00 and we were staying at a hotel right downtown 00:07:54.04\00:07:55.94 and I noticed the traffic at all stopped 00:07:55.97\00:07:58.94 and there were thousands of demonstrators 00:07:58.97\00:08:01.04 banging on tin cans and all the rest 00:08:01.08\00:08:03.48 and they pretty much shut down the inner city 00:08:03.51\00:08:07.02 and I got that same feeling, we're in a danger zone here. 00:08:07.05\00:08:10.29 And then I connected 00:08:10.32\00:08:11.65 that as we've driven to the hotel, 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.02 we'd seen the military and the generals 00:08:13.05\00:08:15.72 and that with their cockets on their hat, 00:08:15.76\00:08:17.93 all out front of the military headquarters. 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.59 So there was something brewing. 00:08:19.63\00:08:21.13 I don't know it was a coup. 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.23 But it just reminded me, 00:08:23.26\00:08:24.60 these big cities get disturbed with that, 00:08:24.63\00:08:26.97 there's no question. 00:08:27.00\00:08:28.34 And what happens 00:08:28.37\00:08:29.70 when they get more and more disturbed? 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.11 I think that there's, with all of this, 00:08:31.14\00:08:34.68 people are sitting at home right now. 00:08:34.71\00:08:37.51 They're sheltering in place through all this COVID stuff. 00:08:37.55\00:08:40.48 And I think there's a lot of pent up anger 00:08:40.52\00:08:43.32 that happens as a result of that too. 00:08:43.35\00:08:45.49 And we see a lot of the writing and all that too. 00:08:45.52\00:08:49.12 So, again, to take it back to religious liberty. 00:08:49.16\00:08:52.46 Yeah. 00:08:52.49\00:08:55.80 Do we just bide that time 00:08:55.83\00:08:59.17 when in a cascading loss of different freedoms 00:08:59.20\00:09:02.97 and liberties of movement even, 00:09:03.00\00:09:06.04 then we might fight to retain civil liberty 00:09:06.07\00:09:08.81 or religious liberty 00:09:08.84\00:09:10.18 when civil liberties are drifting. 00:09:10.21\00:09:12.05 Do we take steps now? Do we say things? 00:09:12.08\00:09:14.85 Do we speak about our faith at a time 00:09:14.88\00:09:17.25 when it might seem people only want to hear about, 00:09:17.29\00:09:20.09 you know, the latest social issue? 00:09:20.12\00:09:23.12 I don't know that you and I can give the answer, 00:09:23.16\00:09:25.89 but these are huge questions 00:09:25.93\00:09:28.16 that each person in these times must ask themselves. 00:09:28.20\00:09:31.63 You know, as I think about this process, 00:09:31.67\00:09:34.17 when is the time period to speak up? 00:09:34.20\00:09:36.40 When is the time period not to speak up? 00:09:36.44\00:09:39.01 Well, we know right now that 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.71 the movement is kind of hostile out there. 00:09:40.74\00:09:44.31 And then it's going to move into, 00:09:44.35\00:09:46.58 back to people sheltering place 00:09:46.61\00:09:48.25 as this possible second wave of COVID hits. 00:09:48.28\00:09:51.22 But as these things 00:09:51.25\00:09:54.16 continue to come out for us there, 00:09:54.19\00:09:57.53 I mean, let me put it this way. 00:09:57.56\00:09:58.99 There's a black and there's a white area. 00:09:59.03\00:10:01.90 We want to definitely stay in the white area with this, 00:10:01.93\00:10:04.33 we don't want to go into the black. 00:10:04.37\00:10:06.57 But what Satan is doing in these last times, I believe, 00:10:06.60\00:10:10.37 is he's taking that 00:10:10.41\00:10:11.74 white and black area and stretching it out. 00:10:11.77\00:10:14.34 So that now we have 1000 different shades of grey. 00:10:14.38\00:10:19.48 And you could be on gray. 00:10:19.51\00:10:21.62 I mean, the thing I find that's interesting is, 00:10:21.65\00:10:24.92 if you take black paint 00:10:24.95\00:10:26.29 and you drop one drop of white paint into that, 00:10:26.32\00:10:29.49 it has no change. 00:10:29.52\00:10:31.09 But if you take white paint 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.46 and you drop one drop of black in there, 00:10:32.49\00:10:34.86 it changes it forever. 00:10:34.90\00:10:37.70 Think about what you believe as a Christian today. 00:10:37.73\00:10:40.50 What you believe as the Seventh-day Adventist? 00:10:40.54\00:10:43.10 Is that being tainted 00:10:43.14\00:10:44.47 by what is happening all around us today? 00:10:44.51\00:10:47.98 Is there a black drop going inside the paint? 00:10:48.01\00:10:50.48 Well, the load is tainted. The loaded word is tainted. 00:10:50.51\00:10:53.98 I think it's axiomatic 00:10:54.02\00:10:57.09 that we're affected by everything that happens. 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.55 So it's that tainting, 00:10:59.59\00:11:00.92 is that diverting, is it blinding? 00:11:00.96\00:11:03.49 Now, these are, I guess, mixing the metaphor a bit, 00:11:03.53\00:11:05.63 but you need to discuss what effect, I mean, 00:11:05.66\00:11:09.00 what, what's the follow on to the obvious effect? 00:11:09.03\00:11:12.70 We're not untouched by event surrounding us. 00:11:12.73\00:11:15.24 No, certainly not. 00:11:15.27\00:11:16.60 We're product of them, if anything. 00:11:16.64\00:11:18.07 But those events shape us, those events mold us. 00:11:18.11\00:11:22.24 Those events push us, either closer to Christ 00:11:22.28\00:11:25.95 or actually further away from Christ. 00:11:25.98\00:11:27.68 And if you don't have a stance, you will be moved. 00:11:27.72\00:11:30.79 Now, and you're getting 00:11:30.82\00:11:32.15 to what's troubling me a bit now 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.76 about some of my fellow 00:11:34.79\00:11:37.36 Seventh-day Adventist Christians, 00:11:37.39\00:11:38.73 you know, you could make it about any group, 00:11:38.76\00:11:40.33 it's not an indictment of Christians, 00:11:40.36\00:11:42.93 not an indictment of Adventist much as people of faith. 00:11:42.96\00:11:46.63 In the COVID era, we've all gone to our burrows. 00:11:46.67\00:11:50.97 We've done nothing, doing little, 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.74 very little church activity. 00:11:52.77\00:11:55.44 My son is involved in our local church 00:11:55.48\00:11:57.91 with something that's wonderful. 00:11:57.95\00:11:59.28 They have a food bank drive-thru food giveaway 00:11:59.31\00:12:01.98 at the church once a week 00:12:02.02\00:12:03.42 and he's been helping with it, you know, 00:12:03.45\00:12:04.79 that's a practical church activity, 00:12:04.82\00:12:06.22 but very little is happening other than that sort of thing. 00:12:06.25\00:12:11.39 So you're doing nothing but yet, 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.43 I know of some fellow members already 00:12:13.46\00:12:17.97 who have been out demonstrating. 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.80 Well, that's not wrong. 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.67 I mean, they're demonstrating in a good cause, 00:12:22.70\00:12:24.04 but how come 00:12:24.07\00:12:25.41 they weren't demonstrating for their faith? 00:12:25.44\00:12:28.08 They've backed off on religion. 00:12:28.11\00:12:30.35 And now when it seems that the crowd wants to do it, 00:12:30.38\00:12:33.98 they're demonstrating with the crowd on a good cause, 00:12:34.02\00:12:36.58 but not the cause. 00:12:36.62\00:12:38.82 That's a good question. 00:12:38.85\00:12:41.29 And it is not the matter of right or wrong, 00:12:41.32\00:12:42.99 but it could uncover some skewed perspective. 00:12:43.02\00:12:47.06 But technically it is a question of 00:12:47.10\00:12:49.00 right and wrong. 00:12:49.03\00:12:50.37 It's not right and wrong. 00:12:50.40\00:12:51.73 It's still a question of left or right, 00:12:51.77\00:12:55.37 black or white, not on a race issue, 00:12:55.40\00:12:57.91 but it has to do with where you stand today. 00:12:57.94\00:13:00.64 Because if you're willing to die on one hill, 00:13:00.68\00:13:04.18 why did you not die on, 00:13:04.21\00:13:05.71 willing to die on another hill 00:13:05.75\00:13:07.35 that think that the truth is on. 00:13:07.38\00:13:08.72 Very well, or let's get back 00:13:08.75\00:13:10.62 to early Adventist history 00:13:10.65\00:13:13.59 at the time our church was organized, 00:13:13.62\00:13:16.62 and Ellen White and the other pioneers. 00:13:16.66\00:13:21.43 Early on, they didn't really expect 00:13:21.46\00:13:22.86 to found a separate church. 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.23 They were Christians who, 00:13:24.27\00:13:25.60 some of them were Methodists, 00:13:25.63\00:13:26.97 some Baptists and that, 00:13:27.00\00:13:28.34 they had a unique concern for the second, 00:13:28.37\00:13:31.67 imminent second coming of Christ, 00:13:31.71\00:13:33.21 but once they were ejected from those churches 00:13:33.24\00:13:35.58 for their activity, 00:13:35.61\00:13:36.95 they needed to form together and they had an organization. 00:13:36.98\00:13:41.55 And they formed that church at the time of the... 00:13:41.58\00:13:44.22 as the American Civil War was breaking up. 00:13:44.25\00:13:48.26 And there were several reasons that contributed to it. 00:13:48.29\00:13:51.46 But the overriding more and more 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.29 contentious issue was slavery. 00:13:53.33\00:13:55.60 And Ellen White, I think speaking of truism, 00:13:55.63\00:13:58.63 but she had sort of the authority 00:13:58.67\00:14:00.20 as the visionary in the church. 00:14:00.24\00:14:01.57 She said that God's punishment was resting on the south 00:14:01.60\00:14:04.54 for its embrace of slavery of the institution. 00:14:04.57\00:14:07.91 So, this was a real moral cast. 00:14:07.94\00:14:10.65 So here a country goes to war, Civil War, Conscription 00:14:10.68\00:14:14.58 right, left and center. 00:14:14.62\00:14:16.79 That was precisely the moment 00:14:16.82\00:14:18.59 that Adventist decided to be non-combatants 00:14:18.62\00:14:21.02 and not fight in that war. 00:14:21.06\00:14:22.56 Very interesting thing. 00:14:22.59\00:14:25.59 And not quite the same as what's happening 00:14:25.63\00:14:27.40 with Black Lives Matter with, 00:14:27.43\00:14:29.06 but people are reacting to a huge injustice that 00:14:29.10\00:14:31.80 you can track it all the way back 00:14:31.83\00:14:33.44 to before the Civil War, but of the same ilk. 00:14:33.47\00:14:36.74 But yet, I don't think 00:14:36.77\00:14:38.27 we're called to break down 00:14:38.31\00:14:39.91 the barricades just for that one issue. 00:14:39.94\00:14:43.38 We need to take a break now and mull it over. 00:14:43.41\00:14:45.75 We will continue the discussion after a break. 00:14:45.78\00:14:48.55 Stay with us. 00:14:48.58\00:14:49.92
