Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 where we're donning the economist mantel 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.97 here but no, what we're doing 00:00:07.00\00:00:08.94 really is connecting to religious liberty. 00:00:08.97\00:00:12.07 What always is money is very important 00:00:12.11\00:00:16.68 in this secular world that we live in. 00:00:16.71\00:00:19.85 Money is the means that carries on a lot of religious activity, 00:00:19.88\00:00:24.45 of course, the heart 00:00:24.49\00:00:25.82 and commitment is unquantifiable. 00:00:25.85\00:00:27.39 But yet these budgets, 00:00:27.42\00:00:28.76 all churches or organizations 00:00:28.79\00:00:30.89 and governments give money, 00:00:30.93\00:00:32.63 they take money and they give it, 00:00:32.66\00:00:36.06 and that's always a reasonable discussion 00:00:36.10\00:00:39.23 when you're talking about religious liberty. 00:00:39.27\00:00:40.70 Are you giving... 00:00:40.74\00:00:42.07 Are you taking money that entangles 00:00:42.10\00:00:43.91 and even restricts your religious practice? 00:00:43.94\00:00:47.18 And I believe and it's worth discussing here, 00:00:47.21\00:00:50.51 that we may have just sort of put that process 00:00:50.55\00:00:52.45 on steroids during the COVID emergency 00:00:52.48\00:00:54.98 when a financially troubled empire, 00:00:55.02\00:00:59.15 the United States wanting to help 00:00:59.19\00:01:01.99 its citizenry in this incredible emergency 00:01:02.02\00:01:04.39 is sort of opened the floodgates 00:01:04.43\00:01:06.49 of monopoly money. 00:01:06.53\00:01:09.03 How much did everybody get, 1200 or something? 00:01:09.06\00:01:12.77 That's phenomenal. 00:01:12.80\00:01:14.14 It was a total of $3 trillion 00:01:14.17\00:01:16.24 which I think included aid to businesses. 00:01:16.27\00:01:19.87 But the receipts for the US are 3.3 trillion in one year. 00:01:19.91\00:01:23.21 So the entire expected income 00:01:23.24\00:01:26.58 for the year was given away in one single give out. 00:01:26.61\00:01:29.88 And most people say thank you government, 00:01:29.92\00:01:31.59 they don't realize 00:01:31.62\00:01:32.95 you can't give what you don't have. 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.06 Well, that's true. 00:01:35.09\00:01:36.42 Can we talk a little bit about... 00:01:36.46\00:01:38.56 So the debate and this is where 00:01:38.59\00:01:40.23 I want to involve you which you know ahead of time, 00:01:40.26\00:01:42.46 we talk behind the scenes. 00:01:42.50\00:01:44.07 It's created quite a lively discussion 00:01:44.10\00:01:46.20 within I think a number of church groups 00:01:46.23\00:01:47.90 including our own. 00:01:47.94\00:01:49.84 Is it appropriate in this situation to take money 00:01:49.87\00:01:54.21 and the way money was offered among several, 00:01:54.24\00:01:57.35 but one way was offered was like the businesses, 00:01:57.38\00:02:01.18 if you didn't lay any workers off 00:02:01.22\00:02:04.79 during the emergency, 00:02:04.82\00:02:06.15 then you could keep the assistance that was given. 00:02:06.19\00:02:09.72 I think once we accept that money, 00:02:12.99\00:02:15.66 we're at a dangerous point right now 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.33 where there's invasion of privacy, 00:02:17.37\00:02:20.24 they're coming in through your iPhones, 00:02:20.27\00:02:21.90 they're coming in through social media. 00:02:21.94\00:02:23.61 They're basically, it's kind of like 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.64 a helicopter parent hanging over you. 00:02:25.67\00:02:28.31 And the government knows everything that you're doing. 00:02:28.34\00:02:30.68 So all they need is, 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.48 I think that this stimulus money 00:02:32.51\00:02:34.38 is a foot in the door for them to be able to say, 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.09 but you accepted it. 00:02:37.12\00:02:38.72 So now it's time for a little payback. 00:02:38.75\00:02:42.82 Well, I didn't live through World War II. 00:02:42.86\00:02:45.63 And I didn't either. No, no. 00:02:45.66\00:02:49.36 We didn't live, I should have included you. 00:02:49.40\00:02:51.37 What I mean is that's ancient history 00:02:51.40\00:02:52.77 World War II. 00:02:52.80\00:02:54.34 I mean, when I was born, 00:02:54.37\00:02:55.70 it was not far in the Review and Herald, 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.54 I don't know anything about them. 00:02:57.57\00:02:59.57 I didn't live through that, 00:02:59.61\00:03:00.94 but before World War II this country, 00:03:00.98\00:03:03.88 the United States 00:03:03.91\00:03:05.25 and most of the world had a huge depression. 00:03:05.28\00:03:07.88 And one way the US got through it was people became, 00:03:07.92\00:03:13.79 many people unemployed people 00:03:13.82\00:03:15.16 became wards of the state basically. 00:03:15.19\00:03:17.36 They were sent to work camps. 00:03:17.39\00:03:18.99 Wonderful things were done by that administration. 00:03:19.03\00:03:22.00 But they lost a lot of practical freedoms. 00:03:22.03\00:03:25.17 Then in World War II particularly, 00:03:25.20\00:03:28.87 I know even in Australia, certainly in England, 00:03:28.90\00:03:32.14 and I believe in the US, 00:03:32.17\00:03:34.28 there was a lot of rationing. 00:03:34.31\00:03:38.38 Was of no matter how much money you had, 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.35 there's some things you couldn't buy, 00:03:40.38\00:03:41.72 no matter how much money. 00:03:41.75\00:03:43.08 You were given a certain amount, 00:03:43.12\00:03:44.45 the government was in control. 00:03:44.49\00:03:45.82 And I think that the COVID gift money 00:03:45.85\00:03:49.79 is a form of rationing. 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.49 It's the same model, 00:03:51.53\00:03:53.23 because they have given nothing. 00:03:53.26\00:03:54.60 So how do you turn that back in and say I don't want it? 00:03:54.63\00:03:58.07 Well, the check that we got individually, 00:03:58.10\00:04:02.04 I think it came without even applying. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.81 But the church has to apply for money. 00:04:03.84\00:04:06.74 It's not given automatically. 00:04:06.78\00:04:08.68 And I think both out of respect 00:04:08.71\00:04:11.88 for the continued viability of the state, 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.35 the church shouldn't hamper 00:04:14.38\00:04:16.32 he state's already failing effort 00:04:16.35\00:04:19.55 and out of concern for its ongoing integrity, 00:04:19.59\00:04:23.32 it shouldn't take it either because it complicates. 00:04:23.36\00:04:25.29 I don't think there's any logic to taking it 00:04:25.33\00:04:28.60 that's overwhelming other than a momentary fix. 00:04:28.63\00:04:31.27 So just so we don't send everybody into a panic 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.24 here with this, the personal stimulus check. 00:04:34.27\00:04:37.64 Is there a problem with that or not? 00:04:37.67\00:04:39.81 Well, it's a problem, but it's not a problem 00:04:39.84\00:04:41.74 of religious liberty or freedom. 00:04:41.78\00:04:43.58 Okay, so you accepted yours? I haven't cashed it. 00:04:43.61\00:04:47.78 You haven't cashed it yet? But I probably will. 00:04:47.82\00:04:49.68 You probably? Okay, so you will. 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.39 But you're talking about your application... 00:04:51.42\00:04:52.75 You know, the people, the taxpayers 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.29 should recognize the government 00:04:54.32\00:04:55.86 cannot give you what it doesn't have 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.99 and what it has, it only gets from you. 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.20 Yeah, so it's like, 00:05:00.23\00:05:01.56 I'll take it out of your bank and I'll give it to you. 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.60 How much do you want? 00:05:03.63\00:05:04.97 So this is smoothing out the process, fine, 00:05:05.00\00:05:08.17 but they're not giving you something new, 00:05:08.20\00:05:10.44 especially when they don't have either money nor real credit. 00:05:10.47\00:05:16.04 So this isn't religious liberty, 00:05:16.08\00:05:18.21 but it's a commentary on our times. 00:05:18.25\00:05:19.98 We're living in a time of great financial bankruptcy. 00:05:20.02\00:05:23.99 And why I think it's worth mentioning every collapse, 00:05:24.02\00:05:28.99 and there's been many, many of them in the modern era. 00:05:29.02\00:05:31.63 Every collapse 00:05:31.66\00:05:33.06 has a negative civil liberty component, 00:05:33.09\00:05:36.26 it will create social dislocation. 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.97 Right now we have rioting from police actions 00:05:39.00\00:05:41.80 that is impounding on the civil rights movement 00:05:41.84\00:05:44.04 which is fine, because there's something 00:05:44.07\00:05:46.27 that people can address by group action, 00:05:46.31\00:05:49.04 but we likely before the civil war 00:05:49.08\00:05:50.95 was seafood riots. 00:05:50.98\00:05:52.78 We'll see riots from the inequalities 00:05:52.81\00:05:55.52 that are highlighted 00:05:55.55\00:05:56.89 by great unemployment and so on. 00:05:56.92\00:05:59.19 And in the crackdowns on that, almost inadvertently, 00:05:59.22\00:06:04.26 even a well intentioned civil government 00:06:04.29\00:06:06.43 is going to have to restrict certain actions and practices, 00:06:06.46\00:06:10.40 probably some form of religious activity. 00:06:10.43\00:06:12.70 So in your thinking, considering that we are moving 00:06:12.73\00:06:16.50 into this hyperinflation 00:06:16.54\00:06:19.34 could be by the end of the year, 00:06:19.37\00:06:20.91 could be in a few months from now. 00:06:20.94\00:06:22.88 How do you think that compares to what happened in 2009 00:06:22.91\00:06:27.88 with the economy? 00:06:27.92\00:06:30.05 This is Act 2. This is Act 2. 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.32 Yeah. More trouble, less trouble? 00:06:32.35\00:06:35.39 No, it'll be more of the same and you and I are not prophets, 00:06:35.42\00:06:39.86 but hopefully you and I are like most of our viewers, 00:06:39.89\00:06:43.16 we read and we see information. 00:06:43.20\00:06:45.67 It's an inevitability, it's already begun, 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.74 and the real estate agents know it. 00:06:47.77\00:06:49.70 There's a housing collapse coming, 00:06:49.74\00:06:53.41 which will have shockwaves 00:06:53.44\00:06:55.81 through the economy of banks failing, 00:06:55.84\00:06:59.51 people unemployed, less workman building houses. 00:06:59.55\00:07:02.75 I mean it just filters up. Yeah, it's coming. 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.62 But right now actually 00:07:05.65\00:07:06.99 that the real estate market is very hot right now. 00:07:07.02\00:07:09.22 It seems to be, well there's pent up demand. 00:07:09.26\00:07:11.36 You know what I'm talking about. 00:07:11.39\00:07:12.73 Yeah, it's hot now because people 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.16 who are in the cities, 00:07:14.20\00:07:15.53 this is what I was told by a financial attorney. 00:07:15.56\00:07:18.13 People in the cities after this COVID thing 00:07:18.17\00:07:20.04 let up a little bit, 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.40 they're wanting out of the cities right now. 00:07:21.44\00:07:23.27 And so the market is hot for country homes. 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.91 And this is interesting as Seventh-day Adventists, 00:07:25.94\00:07:27.98 we had advice that 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.34 we believe was given divinely to co-founder Ellen White 00:07:29.38\00:07:34.52 who there's plenty of evidence that she was under... 00:07:34.55\00:07:39.55 Inspiration. 00:07:39.59\00:07:40.92 Got to watch the words, you know, 00:07:40.96\00:07:42.29 people don't understand it. 00:07:42.32\00:07:43.66 But you know, the Spirit of the Lord 00:07:43.69\00:07:45.03 had moved on her, 00:07:45.06\00:07:46.39 it's not that she was all knowing 00:07:46.43\00:07:47.76 or some Delphic Oracle. 00:07:47.80\00:07:49.16 But on key things, she was given communications, 00:07:49.20\00:07:52.53 and she was told many of the things 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.37 that were happening now, 00:07:55.40\00:07:56.74 and she gave a warning to Adventists back 00:07:56.77\00:07:59.17 before we have the urbanization we have today, 00:07:59.21\00:08:01.64 but that we should move out of the built up 00:08:01.68\00:08:05.28 central city areas just as a matter of precaution, 00:08:05.31\00:08:08.92 because that's where troubles, 00:08:08.95\00:08:12.65 troublous times impact people the most negatively. 00:08:12.69\00:08:15.26 Right. 00:08:15.29\00:08:16.62 And what you're saying I think just confirms that. 00:08:16.66\00:08:18.59 There might come a time for all of us 00:08:18.63\00:08:23.00 wherever we are, it's best to stay in place. 00:08:23.03\00:08:26.03 I had a woman call me up 00:08:26.07\00:08:29.84 about six or eight months ago before the COVID thing. 00:08:29.87\00:08:32.71 And she said that some evangelist had told her 00:08:32.74\00:08:34.71 that she should sell her home and move to the country. 00:08:34.74\00:08:37.05 She was a retired lady. 00:08:37.08\00:08:38.41 And I said, "Have you ever lived in the country before?" 00:08:38.45\00:08:40.02 "No." You know, retired by herself. 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.28 I said, "If you sell now and move to the country, 00:08:42.32\00:08:44.25 that will be your time of trouble." 00:08:44.29\00:08:46.32 That's right. 00:08:46.35\00:08:48.22 So you know things have to be done 00:08:48.26\00:08:49.59 in the right context. 00:08:49.62\00:08:51.23 But we have to be moving our frame of mind currently now 00:08:51.26\00:08:54.20 out of those city areas, out of the worldly concepts 00:08:54.23\00:08:58.17 into a country mindset right now. 00:08:58.20\00:09:00.14 It is the time period that God is giving us. 00:09:00.17\00:09:01.70 And I think that it's not a uniquely Adventist, 00:09:01.74\00:09:04.57 uniquely Christian, it's just a practical concern. 00:09:04.61\00:09:09.18 In India or large population countries 00:09:09.21\00:09:13.65 where there's a lot of people that are very close, 00:09:13.68\00:09:16.52 you know, their income 00:09:16.55\00:09:17.89 is a little more than subsistence. 00:09:17.92\00:09:20.76 It's already happened a couple of times 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.12 in the last couple of decades, 00:09:22.16\00:09:23.49 when say the price of rice doubles. 00:09:23.53\00:09:26.16 A person living in a city with no access to a garden 00:09:26.19\00:09:29.23 or anything, they dropped to starvation level, 00:09:29.26\00:09:31.90 just like that. 00:09:31.93\00:09:33.27 And yet, if they could even leave the city, though, 00:09:33.30\00:09:36.64 they would have some security. 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.47 So this is very practical. 00:09:38.51\00:09:40.14 It's not relating just to Adventist, 00:09:40.18\00:09:41.68 not relating just to North America. 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.71 It's the cities usually where revolutions come, 00:09:43.75\00:09:46.65 where disease comes that we're in COVID now, 00:09:46.68\00:09:49.92 but the plague and so on. 00:09:49.95\00:09:51.59 These are practical considerations 00:09:51.62\00:09:53.19 and I believe religious liberty 00:09:53.22\00:09:56.73 will be strengthened by people that make life 00:09:56.76\00:09:59.16 a little easier for themselves when the hard time comes. 00:09:59.19\00:10:02.06 That's true. 00:10:02.10\00:10:03.43 Do you know there was a belief 00:10:03.47\00:10:05.53 it was a congressman from West Virginia. 00:10:05.57\00:10:08.34 I remember him stating one time, he said, 00:10:08.37\00:10:11.54 "You need to get out of the cities right now." 00:10:11.57\00:10:14.71 And the reason is that as you move out, 00:10:14.74\00:10:17.75 you become less dependent on the government, 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.55 because you don't want to be dependent on the government. 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.55 And so his whole point that he's saying is, 00:10:22.58\00:10:24.95 for each of us today living, 00:10:24.99\00:10:26.76 we want to be less dependent on the government 00:10:26.79\00:10:29.22 and more self-reliant, but for a Christian, 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.56 we want to be more reliant upon God. 00:10:31.59\00:10:34.33 And this is the time period 00:10:34.36\00:10:35.70 that we have to put our faith more and more in God, 00:10:35.73\00:10:38.97 and less and less on the government itself. 00:10:39.00\00:10:43.81 It's a scene I can well visualize. 00:10:43.84\00:10:46.11 Jesus holds up a Roman coin with the emperor's head on it. 00:10:46.14\00:10:50.18 And He says, "Whose face is there? 00:10:50.21\00:10:52.75 Who do you see on that coin?" Oh, Caesar. 00:10:52.78\00:10:55.15 He says, "Well, render unto Caesar 00:10:55.18\00:10:56.79 what is Caesar's and unto God the things 00:10:56.82\00:10:58.79 that are God's. 00:10:58.82\00:11:00.36 We deal with money in our Western society 00:11:00.39\00:11:03.43 and in a capitalist society, it's indispensable. 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.99 The system cannot exist without it. 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.23 But we need to make a distinction 00:11:08.26\00:11:10.20 between the things of God, 00:11:10.23\00:11:12.20 the charter the God has given us 00:11:12.23\00:11:13.74 in proclaiming 00:11:13.77\00:11:15.14 His liberation to all sinful human beings 00:11:15.17\00:11:18.04 in protecting our ability to do that 00:11:18.07\00:11:20.71 which is called protecting religious liberty. 00:11:20.74\00:11:23.88 We need to draw that distinction, 00:11:23.91\00:11:25.75 and do not think that 00:11:25.78\00:11:27.98 with unlimited or gratuitous golden coins, 00:11:28.02\00:11:32.79 figurative, that we can make up for a spiritual deficiency. 00:11:32.82\00:11:37.46 God does not need the visaged coins 00:11:37.49\00:11:41.90 of whatever system we live under. 00:11:41.93\00:11:43.77 God needs a dedicated pure people 00:11:43.80\00:11:47.30 who are advancing the kingdom of God 00:11:47.34\00:11:49.70 and spreading liberty throughout the land. 00:11:49.74\00:11:54.71 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:54.74\00:11:57.75
