Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:30.36\00:00:32.66 This is a program designed to give you information 00:00:32.69\00:00:37.70 on religious liberty, an understanding of what it is, 00:00:37.73\00:00:41.24 how it's administered, 00:00:41.27\00:00:43.64 and probably often 00:00:43.67\00:00:45.57 some of the threats in the US and around the world. 00:00:45.61\00:00:48.04 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine. 00:00:48.08\00:00:51.28 And my guest on the program, welcome Pastor Alden Ho. 00:00:51.31\00:00:57.25 I found a man of many skills and many views 00:00:57.29\00:01:00.06 and I want to pick your brains on another program. 00:01:00.09\00:01:04.69 Are you a fisherman? 00:01:04.73\00:01:06.63 No, actually I... No. 00:01:06.66\00:01:08.46 I'm not either. No. 00:01:08.50\00:01:09.83 I have a son who is generally impatient. 00:01:09.86\00:01:14.50 But for some reason, 00:01:14.54\00:01:15.87 fishing just draws him in the idea of going fishing 00:01:15.90\00:01:20.21 and I guess he likes catching the unknown. 00:01:20.24\00:01:23.88 So fishing at least is in my family a bit. 00:01:23.91\00:01:28.05 But, you know, I'm reminded of that Bible story 00:01:28.08\00:01:30.42 where Jesus and His followers who really, 00:01:30.45\00:01:32.45 as the Bible says, "The foxes have holes 00:01:32.49\00:01:34.79 but the Son of Man nowhere to lay His head." 00:01:34.82\00:01:36.83 They were itinerant guys that I'm sure slipped out 00:01:36.86\00:01:40.50 under the saddle up, 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.10 under the open air a lot after a hot sunny day. 00:01:42.13\00:01:46.67 But we know that there were women 00:01:46.70\00:01:48.64 that supplied them with food and means, but Herod... 00:01:48.67\00:01:52.17 Jew, I was one of them, 00:01:52.21\00:01:53.54 so they were highly connected women, 00:01:53.58\00:01:55.01 but Jesus and His followers 00:01:55.04\00:01:56.48 really didn't have much of anything. 00:01:56.51\00:01:59.88 And then as always, even if you're impoverished, 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.62 the government wants to cut off what little you have. 00:02:02.65\00:02:05.12 Right. Texas came to you. 00:02:05.15\00:02:07.06 Where do they get it? 00:02:07.09\00:02:08.42 Jesus says, Well, you know, go fishing. 00:02:08.46\00:02:10.96 And they pulled out just enough 00:02:10.99\00:02:13.90 out of the mouth of a fish to pay the tax. 00:02:13.93\00:02:15.73 Exact amount. 00:02:15.76\00:02:17.10 Right, yeah. It was the exact amount. 00:02:17.13\00:02:18.53 So, you know, money can be found 00:02:18.57\00:02:21.40 when it's necessary. 00:02:21.44\00:02:23.00 But it amazes me 00:02:23.04\00:02:24.51 when we talk about religious liberty very often, 00:02:24.54\00:02:28.34 an element of it as weird as the means come from 00:02:28.38\00:02:32.61 and will taking means from the wrong source 00:02:32.65\00:02:35.95 compromise your practice of religion 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.55 and your faith witness. 00:02:38.59\00:02:40.36 And I think very often 00:02:40.39\00:02:42.02 there's a forgetfulness of you can fish for it. 00:02:42.06\00:02:44.59 True. 00:02:44.63\00:02:45.96 Yeah, I mean providentially, not the other way. 00:02:45.99\00:02:49.40 And let's talk a little bit about 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.73 something that goes back to the beginnings 00:02:52.77\00:02:54.74 of the religious liberty work 00:02:54.77\00:02:56.14 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:02:56.17\00:02:57.51 a discussion of whether or not 00:02:57.54\00:02:59.67 to take money usually from authorities, 00:02:59.71\00:03:04.75 from a king, 00:03:04.78\00:03:06.11 from a president, from a governor, 00:03:06.15\00:03:08.72 from whoever is willing to give you a lot of money 00:03:08.75\00:03:12.02 to enable your work, but perhaps, 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.96 then when the going gets tough or details change, 00:03:14.99\00:03:19.09 maybe then say, 00:03:19.13\00:03:20.46 "Well, you shouldn't be teaching this. 00:03:20.50\00:03:22.36 You maybe should keep quiet on this or say this, 00:03:22.40\00:03:25.43 support the government," 00:03:25.47\00:03:27.34 the strings with most money. 00:03:27.37\00:03:30.07 Very interesting topic 00:03:30.11\00:03:31.44 because, you know, the Bible does talk about 00:03:31.47\00:03:35.78 not only getting that out of the fish 00:03:35.81\00:03:38.75 but that's interesting that came out of natural means. 00:03:38.78\00:03:41.32 But then we're also told here in 00:03:41.35\00:03:45.15 I believe it's Isaiah, 00:03:45.19\00:03:47.09 that... 00:03:47.12\00:03:48.46 Isaiah 60:5, 00:03:48.49\00:03:50.66 "The abundance of the sea will be turned to you, 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.69 the wealth of the Gentiles shall come to you." 00:03:52.73\00:03:55.66 How do we draw the line between the money 00:03:55.70\00:03:59.43 that comes from the Gentiles 00:03:59.47\00:04:01.04 versus the money that comes from, say, 00:04:01.07\00:04:04.34 the government in stimulus form? 00:04:04.37\00:04:07.88 Well, it's an interesting twist on it. 00:04:07.91\00:04:11.55 I'm old enough to remember in more experience, I guess, 00:04:11.58\00:04:15.72 our church used to have annual in-gathering appeals. 00:04:15.75\00:04:20.92 I think we have something there, 00:04:20.96\00:04:22.29 but it's surely not what it used to be. 00:04:22.32\00:04:23.76 Definitely not. 00:04:23.79\00:04:26.33 And we would quote church pioneers who said, 00:04:26.36\00:04:30.80 you know, it's really a privilege 00:04:30.83\00:04:33.74 for granting neighbors and community leaders 00:04:33.77\00:04:37.11 to cooperate financially what we're doing. 00:04:37.14\00:04:41.31 So we didn't see it even as imposing upon them. 00:04:41.34\00:04:44.18 We're giving them the opportunity 00:04:44.21\00:04:45.75 to help with a great work and that was so. 00:04:45.78\00:04:50.42 But there's no strings that I know 00:04:50.45\00:04:52.22 are from those sorts of gifts of, are they? 00:04:52.25\00:04:55.36 Well, yes, actually there is. 00:04:55.39\00:04:58.09 I mean, if you accept money 00:04:58.13\00:04:59.49 from certain entities sometimes, 00:04:59.53\00:05:03.00 they want to have control, they want to have access... 00:05:03.03\00:05:05.03 Oh, no, but I mean going door to door 00:05:05.07\00:05:06.67 just asking the neighborhood. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.04 That's totally different. No, so I don't... 00:05:08.07\00:05:10.34 I never saw a problem with that 00:05:10.37\00:05:12.47 other than as a young guy, a certain embarrassment. 00:05:12.51\00:05:16.75 I looked forward to in-gathering 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.25 'cause that was a time period you saw your friends, 00:05:18.28\00:05:20.08 you went out, it was cold. 00:05:20.12\00:05:21.45 Yes, yes. 00:05:21.48\00:05:22.82 But that was the fellowship, the aspect back then. 00:05:22.85\00:05:25.15 But it's not... 00:05:25.19\00:05:26.99 It's extinct today. 00:05:27.02\00:05:28.49 But you certainly jumped ahead in my thinking. 00:05:28.52\00:05:31.29 Absolutely, when you get into more formal applications 00:05:31.33\00:05:35.60 for grants and government assistance, 00:05:35.63\00:05:37.70 and so on, 00:05:37.73\00:05:39.47 there's usually detailed criteria 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.64 you have to satisfy to get it in the first place, 00:05:41.67\00:05:45.17 which in the case of religious schools and so on 00:05:45.21\00:05:47.78 means that you set up curriculum, 00:05:47.81\00:05:49.98 even facilities to agree with government requirements, 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.95 which is sort of a catch 22... 00:05:52.98\00:05:54.38 It's almost... 00:05:54.42\00:05:55.75 Because it'll cost you more to come to the standards 00:05:55.78\00:05:59.49 and therefore you need even more of the money 00:05:59.52\00:06:01.12 that you're asking for in the first place. 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.49 Right, but it seems as though you're selling yourself out. 00:06:02.52\00:06:06.53 It's like Jacob and Esau, 00:06:06.56\00:06:08.23 selling your birthright for a bowl of porridge. 00:06:08.26\00:06:12.10 And that's what usually happens. 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.27 But I don't know, if there's certain criteria that, 00:06:14.30\00:06:17.21 you know, after X amount, then we tell you what to do. 00:06:17.24\00:06:21.48 Well, I don't think there's a criteria 00:06:21.51\00:06:22.84 because it varies from country to country, 00:06:22.88\00:06:24.91 from administration to administration, 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.61 and maybe even the personnel, 00:06:26.65\00:06:29.55 different person in the same government 00:06:29.58\00:06:31.72 or official job 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.09 might look differently on the public, 00:06:33.12\00:06:36.36 how they relate to the public trust, 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.76 money that's given. 00:06:38.79\00:06:40.13 I know that just several months ago, 00:06:40.16\00:06:41.50 I was in Belize for a mission trip 00:06:41.53\00:06:42.86 and even in the Seventh-day Adventist school system there, 00:06:42.90\00:06:46.90 all the teachers were paid actually by the government. 00:06:46.94\00:06:50.11 So you really couldn't let them go per se fire them 00:06:50.14\00:06:53.54 because they were government employees 00:06:53.58\00:06:55.24 working in your school. 00:06:55.28\00:06:57.05 I didn't know that about Belize, 00:06:57.08\00:06:58.41 but yeah, that's almost totally 00:06:58.45\00:07:00.82 the worst situation you could get. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.78 Yeah. So how do you correct somebody? 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.75 You can't do much. 00:07:04.79\00:07:06.45 And so I think the same thing falls upon us. 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.12 At what point do we have to accept a certain amount 00:07:09.16\00:07:12.19 or should we not accept anything at all? 00:07:12.23\00:07:14.53 Now I'm sure in Belize, 00:07:14.56\00:07:17.10 government can work through that situation. 00:07:17.13\00:07:19.50 It's not the end of all good works. 00:07:19.53\00:07:23.44 And in any situation to take money 00:07:23.47\00:07:27.41 from another source, 00:07:27.44\00:07:30.25 even money that might ultimately compromise you 00:07:30.28\00:07:33.15 is not in itself a culpable act 00:07:33.18\00:07:37.85 or evil in itself. 00:07:37.89\00:07:40.56 But to me 00:07:40.59\00:07:42.09 it's in the same category as Hezekiah. 00:07:42.12\00:07:45.29 Recently healed by God, 00:07:45.33\00:07:48.03 when he was told that he might not last, 00:07:48.06\00:07:49.53 so he was already in a sort of an independent mode. 00:07:49.56\00:07:53.70 And he gets to bragging with the Babylonians 00:07:53.74\00:07:56.87 and showing them the treasures and all the rest. 00:07:56.91\00:07:58.67 Well, that wasn't really wrong. 00:07:58.71\00:08:00.64 But he'd lost his sense of perspective, 00:08:00.68\00:08:03.61 not understanding that his wealth was from the Lord 00:08:03.65\00:08:06.15 and it wasn't even, 00:08:06.18\00:08:08.05 you know, the treasure per se that made Israel strong, 00:08:08.08\00:08:11.02 he should have been telling them more about, 00:08:11.05\00:08:13.56 you know, God's way for mankind rather than what he had. 00:08:13.59\00:08:17.29 But he basically sold them down the river, 00:08:17.33\00:08:19.66 and it led directly to invasion 00:08:19.69\00:08:22.66 and the loss of liberty for many of God's people. 00:08:22.70\00:08:25.33 And I see taking state aid in that same line, 00:08:25.37\00:08:29.90 you can't say church leaders who sign on the dotted line 00:08:29.94\00:08:34.98 and lose their autonomy and done evil thing, 00:08:35.01\00:08:38.11 but they've delivered themselves 00:08:38.15\00:08:39.85 into the hands of evildoers and evil times. 00:08:39.88\00:08:43.99 They've created vulnerability. 00:08:44.02\00:08:46.22 So do you think as a result of accepting that, 00:08:46.25\00:08:48.86 then the government's going to come back and say, 00:08:48.89\00:08:51.09 "Hey, do you remember in the year 2020, 00:08:51.13\00:08:53.09 during the COVID thing, 00:08:53.13\00:08:54.66 we gave you some stimulus money? 00:08:54.70\00:08:57.50 And so now you got to do this, 00:08:57.53\00:08:59.10 you got to do this and you can't do that." 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.10 Well, of course, that always happens. 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.81 Always happens. 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.17 And, you know, you're getting into the present. 00:09:05.21\00:09:08.11 That's exactly what's happening now. 00:09:08.14\00:09:10.41 The United States, I think, with good intention, 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.58 at least the majority of government officials, 00:09:13.62\00:09:16.99 I think with good intention, others with some cynicism 00:09:17.02\00:09:20.82 because some of them must know it's a bankrupt country. 00:09:20.86\00:09:25.73 And I've even had some family members 00:09:25.76\00:09:30.00 that were not running their finances the way I would 00:09:30.03\00:09:34.70 and then they were very free to give something away 00:09:34.74\00:09:37.71 or to give away big gifts. 00:09:37.74\00:09:39.64 That's not a sign of generosity. 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.68 It's a sign of further irresponsibility 00:09:41.71\00:09:44.71 if you're not managing and you're wasting something 00:09:44.75\00:09:48.68 that you should have been paying your debts on. 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.35 So the US debt 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.56 is mathematically almost impossible 00:09:53.59\00:09:56.59 to ever pay back, right? 00:09:56.62\00:09:58.89 So what do you think, if it's that bad, 00:09:58.93\00:10:01.33 where are they getting all this money from to... 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.43 It's made up money. 00:10:03.47\00:10:05.57 Made up money, in the sense of, they're printing it? 00:10:05.60\00:10:10.04 No, they didn't even print it. 00:10:10.07\00:10:13.17 We will likely at the edge and, you know, we're entering, 00:10:13.21\00:10:16.54 it's not conspiracy theory or anything, 00:10:16.58\00:10:19.41 but, you know, it doesn't narrowly 00:10:19.45\00:10:21.02 relate to religious liberty, 00:10:21.05\00:10:22.38 but to describe the times we're in 00:10:22.42\00:10:23.75 and I think this is a good chance 00:10:23.79\00:10:25.75 to explain to people where we are. 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.89 You know, the whole monetary system 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.16 in the West is largely, 00:10:31.19\00:10:34.63 it's an old-fashioned word that people understand, 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.67 it's very close to a Ponzi scheme, 00:10:36.70\00:10:38.73 or as the Bible puts it, 00:10:38.77\00:10:40.40 it's a system that when people lose confidence, 00:10:40.44\00:10:42.90 the merchants will wail 00:10:42.94\00:10:44.27 over what's lost in half an hour. 00:10:44.31\00:10:47.91 Money is a complex thing, people get doctorates 00:10:47.94\00:10:50.85 and schools established on finance and so on, 00:10:50.88\00:10:55.52 but you need to understand that money is an exchange system, 00:10:55.55\00:10:59.39 and all you're exchanging the value 00:10:59.42\00:11:01.66 either put into something by labor 00:11:01.69\00:11:04.79 or of goods, right? 00:11:04.83\00:11:08.66 And you can monetize that through different things. 00:11:08.70\00:11:11.97 In the island of Yap, 00:11:12.00\00:11:13.34 they used to have carved stone circles. 00:11:13.37\00:11:17.04 In New Guinea, pigs. 00:11:17.07\00:11:20.38 You need an item, a reference item. 00:11:20.41\00:11:22.74 And most countries for most of recorded history 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.78 have used valuable metals like gold. 00:11:25.81\00:11:29.52 Gold is pretty indestructible, 00:11:29.55\00:11:33.29 compact, heavy, and so on. 00:11:33.32\00:11:34.66 That's reasonable. 00:11:34.69\00:11:36.02 It doesn't have to be gold, it could be silver. 00:11:36.06\00:11:37.83 It could be diamonds but an agreed upon thing. 00:11:37.86\00:11:42.46 Then you've got a pure reference point 00:11:42.50\00:11:44.33 that continues and is a solid base. 00:11:44.37\00:11:48.64 US used to have it, 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.54 although if you know US history, 00:11:50.57\00:11:52.71 right after the War of Independence, 00:11:52.74\00:11:55.18 this country spent money they didn't have, 00:11:55.21\00:11:57.78 there was massive inflation. 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.61 The wages of the revolutionary soldiers 00:11:59.65\00:12:01.68 given to them in a chip became worthless. 00:12:01.72\00:12:05.42 They were exchanging them 00:12:05.45\00:12:06.79 for equivalent of a cup of coffee 00:12:06.82\00:12:08.16 at one point, 00:12:08.19\00:12:09.52 and General Washington said, 00:12:09.56\00:12:10.89 "Hang on to it, it may become valuable." 00:12:10.93\00:12:12.39 Well, it never did very much. 00:12:12.43\00:12:14.10 But that said, until the '70s, 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.13 the US extensively on the dollar said 00:12:16.16\00:12:18.93 it could be exchanged for gold. 00:12:18.97\00:12:21.04 We went off that. 00:12:21.07\00:12:22.40 So now the money's only money because they say it's money 00:12:22.44\00:12:26.01 and you accept it as money. 00:12:26.04\00:12:28.14 That's fine. 00:12:28.18\00:12:30.05 But when you produce money out of proportion 00:12:30.08\00:12:33.58 to the solid substance of real wealth, 00:12:33.62\00:12:35.92 which is labor and goods, 00:12:35.95\00:12:38.52 something starts to give. 00:12:38.55\00:12:40.36 It's true. I remember... 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.72 And we are in a stage now 00:12:41.76\00:12:43.26 where there's a term that is used on television 00:12:43.29\00:12:45.56 and no one much knows what it means, 00:12:45.59\00:12:47.26 quantitative easing. 00:12:47.30\00:12:48.73 It's not even printing money. 00:12:48.76\00:12:50.10 It's typing numbers in different places. 00:12:50.13\00:12:53.34 Fudging your bank account 00:12:53.37\00:12:54.70 And... Basically. 00:12:54.74\00:12:56.07 The law of finances is irrevocable 00:12:56.10\00:12:58.71 and unchangeable. 00:12:58.74\00:13:00.94 At some point that catches up with you 00:13:00.98\00:13:03.58 in the form of massive inflation. 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.38 That's true. Or another way of putting it. 00:13:06.41\00:13:09.18 You pay a tax in value, it becomes 00:13:09.22\00:13:11.79 depending on how much you borrow it 00:13:11.82\00:13:13.49 through throwing numbers around, 00:13:13.52\00:13:16.39 the money's worth that much less. 00:13:16.42\00:13:17.93 Now I know you're not a prophet. 00:13:17.96\00:13:20.13 And since I know that, 00:13:20.16\00:13:21.80 but you're watching what's going on. 00:13:21.83\00:13:26.13 Hyper... 00:13:26.17\00:13:27.70 Is it hyper or super hyperinflation? 00:13:27.74\00:13:29.40 Hyperinflation. 00:13:29.44\00:13:30.77 Hyperinflation I know is going to be coming here. 00:13:30.81\00:13:33.98 What's your guess? When? 00:13:34.01\00:13:36.95 Well, you know, my $10 is in the bank 00:13:36.98\00:13:39.45 and I'd be very happy personally 00:13:39.48\00:13:41.08 if it didn't come, I'll have to... 00:13:41.12\00:13:42.48 You and I are gone. 00:13:42.52\00:13:44.09 But the chances are very high. We'll live to see it. 00:13:44.12\00:13:47.72 And no one knows how high it can be. 00:13:47.76\00:13:51.86 I remember going to Brazil a few decades ago 00:13:51.89\00:13:54.66 when they had 600% inflation, which is quite startling. 00:13:54.70\00:13:59.20 And, you know, $60 gave me a stack of bills that high. 00:13:59.23\00:14:04.04 Very hard for country to survive. 00:14:04.07\00:14:06.41 Germany, in between the wars, 00:14:06.44\00:14:09.41 had inflation of massive proportions 00:14:09.44\00:14:11.71 where it took literally a barrel load of money 00:14:11.75\00:14:13.55 to get an apple. 00:14:13.58\00:14:14.92 Exactly. 00:14:14.95\00:14:16.28 Zimbabwe, very recently had inflation 00:14:16.32\00:14:19.35 where I saw on television recently one financial lecturer 00:14:19.39\00:14:23.93 waving around the Zimbabwe $20 trillion note. 00:14:23.96\00:14:28.10 I mean, that's just a fantastical... 00:14:28.13\00:14:29.73 And they were worthless, so close to worthless. 00:14:29.76\00:14:32.33 So there's no rules on that. 00:14:32.37\00:14:33.77 But once you unleash it, it's very hard to stop. 00:14:33.80\00:14:37.01 And speaking to our church, 00:14:37.04\00:14:42.24 Ellen White, the visionary co-founder, 00:14:42.28\00:14:45.15 she warned of a stage 00:14:45.18\00:14:46.51 that will come before the end of time 00:14:46.55\00:14:47.95 when funds that could have been given earlier to the church, 00:14:47.98\00:14:53.36 given a little belatedly they'll be worthless. 00:14:53.39\00:14:55.26 People basically throw the money. 00:14:55.29\00:14:56.62 Yeah. 00:14:56.66\00:14:57.99 So that's likely. 00:14:58.03\00:14:59.36 And, you know, you and I can do little about it, except, 00:14:59.39\00:15:03.20 I think realize that this might be a consequence. 00:15:03.23\00:15:05.63 So where it comes to, we'll pick it up after a break, 00:15:05.67\00:15:09.44 is in this sort of a situation 00:15:09.47\00:15:11.71 where a government wanting to help 00:15:11.74\00:15:13.91 as much as it can 00:15:13.94\00:15:15.28 when tens of millions of people are out of work, 00:15:15.31\00:15:16.85 hopefully temporarily, 00:15:16.88\00:15:18.31 is literally throwing this sort of money 00:15:18.35\00:15:21.05 at the church. 00:15:21.08\00:15:22.48 Is this the time to take a complicating gift, 00:15:22.52\00:15:26.72 which is always complicating, but especially at a moment 00:15:26.76\00:15:29.56 when it's essentially worthless? 00:15:29.59\00:15:31.69 Yeah. We'll be back. 00:15:31.73\00:15:33.06 Let's take a break 00:15:33.09\00:15:34.43 and stay with us for this discussion. 00:15:34.46\00:15:35.96
