Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.73 This has been an interesting discussion 00:00:03.77\00:00:06.23 with guest, Alden Ho. 00:00:06.27\00:00:09.24 We've been looking at the global situation, 00:00:09.27\00:00:12.14 obviously with us, not a subtext, 00:00:12.17\00:00:14.58 but a background view of religious liberty, 00:00:14.61\00:00:16.75 how has it affected the worldwide, 00:00:16.78\00:00:18.85 the whole world is shaking on its axis 00:00:18.88\00:00:20.88 socially and even politically. 00:00:20.92\00:00:24.22 And your view is that 00:00:24.25\00:00:25.59 this is the beginning of trouble, 00:00:25.62\00:00:26.96 it's not the end of it. 00:00:26.99\00:00:28.32 It is not just by the pandemic. 00:00:28.36\00:00:30.46 It's not just political, 00:00:30.49\00:00:31.96 but it's also in the natural sense 00:00:31.99\00:00:34.26 with all these hurricanes and cyclones. 00:00:34.30\00:00:37.90 Now, you know, first example 00:00:37.93\00:00:39.67 that people haven't always drawn 00:00:39.70\00:00:41.60 the things, we know in China 00:00:41.64\00:00:44.47 that well under the three self-movement 00:00:44.51\00:00:46.68 of government controls their religious activity, 00:00:46.71\00:00:49.24 the certain organization and apparent liberalization. 00:00:49.28\00:00:52.38 The home church movement in China 00:00:52.41\00:00:55.75 is under increasing oversight, 00:00:55.78\00:00:58.89 and even attacked by the government 00:00:58.92\00:01:00.82 because it's illegal religious activity. 00:01:00.86\00:01:03.22 And that's the key in China. 00:01:03.26\00:01:04.59 I don't think they particularly care 00:01:04.63\00:01:07.26 to analyze Christianity versus any other religion, 00:01:07.30\00:01:10.13 any other ism. 00:01:10.17\00:01:12.20 It's not the right one. 00:01:12.23\00:01:13.57 Or other than the Communist Party, 00:01:13.60\00:01:15.07 and that's why they persecute 00:01:15.10\00:01:16.44 the Falun Gong movement so rigorously, 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.44 it's barely, in fact, 00:01:19.47\00:01:21.04 it never claimed to be a religion. 00:01:21.08\00:01:22.41 It's sort of just a health viewpoint 00:01:22.44\00:01:26.45 and a slight veneer of spirituality. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.95 But it clubs together 00:01:29.98\00:01:31.32 and the Chinese government was troubled to see 00:01:31.35\00:01:33.66 too many millions of people thinking alike 00:01:33.69\00:01:36.19 on something different from communism, 00:01:36.22\00:01:37.76 and they've tried to wipe it out. 00:01:37.79\00:01:40.03 And they've imprisoned them by the hundreds of thousands, 00:01:40.06\00:01:43.57 harvested their organs, 00:01:43.60\00:01:44.93 all sorts of unspeakable things. 00:01:44.97\00:01:47.80 So, China is been moving against Falun Gong, 00:01:47.84\00:01:51.67 it's been an eye, every time I get on Washington, 00:01:51.71\00:01:53.71 I see their representatives 00:01:53.74\00:01:55.44 demonstrating in front of the White House 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.35 or other events on the Ellipse there... 00:01:57.38\00:02:01.32 So, it's an ongoing problem. 00:02:01.35\00:02:02.92 They are persecuting the Uyghur Muslims. 00:02:02.95\00:02:06.86 I think for nothing 00:02:06.89\00:02:08.22 other than that that's connected 00:02:08.26\00:02:09.66 with a geographic distinction from, 00:02:09.69\00:02:14.20 you know, the massive Chinese population, 00:02:14.23\00:02:17.60 that they have illusions of autonomy, 00:02:17.63\00:02:21.10 but they're not 00:02:21.14\00:02:22.47 a particularly pathetic political threat to China, 00:02:22.50\00:02:24.51 but they persecuted them deeply. 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.44 And we saw it at Wuhan, 00:02:26.47\00:02:30.31 incredibly rigorous restrictions 00:02:30.35\00:02:33.11 on individual freedoms. 00:02:33.15\00:02:34.48 So, I think China is, 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.45 is at least at the very least 00:02:36.48\00:02:39.02 using this new health control measure 00:02:39.05\00:02:42.26 to further its ongoing restrictions 00:02:42.29\00:02:44.73 of religious and other minorities. 00:02:44.76\00:02:46.73 Since the US has moved a lot of production stuff 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.56 out into China. 00:02:49.60\00:02:51.07 China's GNP, 00:02:51.10\00:02:53.40 I guess you could say, has just boomed. 00:02:53.44\00:02:56.00 I mean, you have 00:02:56.04\00:02:57.37 very, very wealthy young people today. 00:02:57.41\00:02:59.64 So, for them, I mean, they don't realize 00:02:59.67\00:03:03.35 that all these things are just starting to brew. 00:03:03.38\00:03:06.92 And once again brewing. 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.19 Well, I know you're Asian and I could guess, 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.59 is your background from some Chinese? 00:03:12.62\00:03:15.02 I'm Chinese. Yeah, I'm guessing. 00:03:15.06\00:03:18.89 So, I'm sure you have some 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.40 more than some thoughts on that. 00:03:21.43\00:03:22.96 But tell me if I'm wrong, 00:03:23.00\00:03:24.80 my study of Chinese history 00:03:24.83\00:03:27.14 is it's not been an expansionist country. 00:03:27.17\00:03:29.84 China's very self-absorbed. 00:03:29.87\00:03:32.64 And further back you go in history, 00:03:32.67\00:03:34.58 the more they had which other countries have 00:03:34.61\00:03:36.38 but with a vengeance in China 00:03:36.41\00:03:37.91 that they are the Middle Kingdom 00:03:37.95\00:03:39.41 and the rest of the world is barbarians and whatever. 00:03:39.45\00:03:42.12 I don't see China is even in this late point, 00:03:42.15\00:03:45.32 very expansionist. 00:03:45.35\00:03:47.16 What they are 00:03:47.19\00:03:48.52 is aggressively improving their lot 00:03:48.56\00:03:54.16 and they're trading empire without equal. 00:03:54.20\00:03:57.87 Everywhere 00:03:57.90\00:03:59.23 I've been in the world in my career, 00:03:59.27\00:04:00.67 in this job, 00:04:00.70\00:04:02.10 like in East Timor, for example, 00:04:02.14\00:04:03.87 the ends of the world, 00:04:03.91\00:04:05.74 little tiny, newly independent country 00:04:05.77\00:04:08.31 of 300,000 people 00:04:08.34\00:04:10.05 touched a little bit above Australia 00:04:10.08\00:04:12.51 particularly I can't get there from Australia, 00:04:12.55\00:04:15.18 used to be part of Indonesia 00:04:15.22\00:04:16.62 until Civil War broke out in Australia and New Zealand, 00:04:16.65\00:04:21.56 help broken of their independence, 00:04:21.59\00:04:23.53 the cost of 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.06 I think about 100,000 people were killed. 00:04:25.09\00:04:27.66 When I flew in there 00:04:27.70\00:04:29.66 I'd say half the plane full of Chinese businessmen, 00:04:29.70\00:04:32.27 we get there we find that the Government House, 00:04:32.30\00:04:36.34 sorry, the President's palace built by China given to them, 00:04:36.37\00:04:40.21 the government assembly given by China, 00:04:40.24\00:04:43.01 the port built by China, they own the mining, 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.61 built the railroad. 00:04:45.65\00:04:46.98 So, they've got good, good friendship 00:04:47.02\00:04:49.68 with the government 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.49 and the goods 00:04:51.52\00:04:52.85 are being funneled back to China. 00:04:52.89\00:04:54.26 Nothing wrong with that, but that's the method. 00:04:54.29\00:04:56.32 That is how they're doing it. 00:04:56.36\00:04:57.69 Absolutely. 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.06 So, in that sense, yes. 00:04:59.09\00:05:00.43 They're a threat to US dominance of the world, 00:05:00.46\00:05:05.10 but not in the way 00:05:05.13\00:05:06.47 that the US normally perceives threat, 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.10 they're just outdoing us. 00:05:08.14\00:05:09.77 I was, a few months ago I was in Belize, 00:05:09.80\00:05:11.97 same thing over there. 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.34 When you look at how the, the actual marketplace, 00:05:13.38\00:05:18.28 all the grocery stores, and the variety stores, 00:05:18.31\00:05:22.75 I guess you could say were all owned by Chinese. 00:05:22.78\00:05:24.99 You had Mennonites 00:05:25.02\00:05:26.35 that owned the electrical market. 00:05:26.39\00:05:27.76 You had another group of people 00:05:27.79\00:05:29.16 that had the furniture market, but they're all there. 00:05:29.19\00:05:32.83 And I mean, they speak the language. 00:05:32.86\00:05:36.13 They're the very much Asians have the, 00:05:36.16\00:05:39.13 the entrepreneurial mindset. 00:05:39.17\00:05:41.07 I can't say that they're full of pride, 00:05:41.10\00:05:43.41 because every country has its own pride. 00:05:43.44\00:05:45.67 But yet, 00:05:45.71\00:05:47.71 I even heard that the dollar is shifting now 00:05:47.74\00:05:50.05 where it's no longer the trade value, 00:05:50.08\00:05:52.51 and it's going to the Yen. 00:05:52.55\00:05:55.02 Now that's the biggest story. 00:05:55.05\00:05:56.38 That's the great geopolitical threat 00:05:56.42\00:05:59.62 but, but my point is the world is changing 00:05:59.65\00:06:03.16 and there's a new trading empire rising, 00:06:03.19\00:06:06.83 which short of nuclear annihilation, 00:06:06.86\00:06:10.13 I don't think the US or any other power can stop. 00:06:10.17\00:06:13.00 And the US itself rose in somewhat unexpected ways, 00:06:13.03\00:06:17.51 the fix was in with World War II, 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.57 US won't disappear. 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.38 But these are creating stresses 00:06:21.41\00:06:23.41 that the different countries are going to deal 00:06:23.45\00:06:28.95 with in different ways. 00:06:28.98\00:06:30.99 And religion is always the subtext to it 00:06:31.02\00:06:34.22 that that I know. 00:06:34.26\00:06:35.59 You know, it's interesting. 00:06:35.62\00:06:36.96 There was a saying many years ago 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.33 when I used to travel that 00:06:38.36\00:06:40.10 because the US was so strong that when the US sneezes, 00:06:40.13\00:06:44.30 the rest of the world catches a cold. 00:06:44.33\00:06:46.63 But I think today, 00:06:46.67\00:06:48.50 it's not as strong as it used to be 00:06:48.54\00:06:51.44 because when you look at, for example, 00:06:51.47\00:06:54.31 amidst the COVID stuff right now, 00:06:54.34\00:06:56.88 it's not the US that sneezes 00:06:56.91\00:06:58.71 the US basically shut off all the ports. 00:06:58.75\00:07:01.35 Now the US is hurting 00:07:01.38\00:07:02.72 because all the products that we were getting from China 00:07:02.75\00:07:06.96 is not coming into port. 00:07:06.99\00:07:09.16 And so, the economy hurts too. 00:07:09.19\00:07:11.39 Well, we're living through an interesting period 00:07:11.43\00:07:13.90 and I remember 00:07:13.93\00:07:16.26 the western civilization changed 00:07:16.30\00:07:20.14 once the trade routes were opened, 00:07:20.17\00:07:22.64 remember Columbus, 00:07:22.67\00:07:24.01 Vasco da Gama and all these guys, 00:07:24.04\00:07:25.37 they were trying to find a way to bring stuff from China, 00:07:25.41\00:07:30.15 other than across the land. 00:07:30.18\00:07:31.68 Yeah. 00:07:31.71\00:07:33.05 And it was, it was Chinese spices 00:07:33.08\00:07:35.58 that made the difference 00:07:35.62\00:07:36.95 between stinky royal quartz 00:07:36.99\00:07:39.69 and, you know, 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.06 at least they puffed part of that. 00:07:41.09\00:07:42.52 I remember there was a classic statement 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.19 from one of the royalty of England 00:07:44.23\00:07:46.53 back in the Middle Ages. 00:07:46.56\00:07:47.90 They said they took a bath once a year 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.33 whether they needed it or not. 00:07:49.36\00:07:50.80 Mercy, wow. 00:07:50.83\00:07:53.57 They didn't have plumbing, that was part of the reason. 00:07:53.60\00:07:56.14 And so, you know, China is an ancient civilization, 00:07:56.17\00:07:59.67 but that's not really the point here, 00:07:59.71\00:08:01.04 the point is that there's a shift 00:08:01.08\00:08:02.78 and the geopolitical realities are changing, 00:08:02.81\00:08:07.65 I don't think the US will disappear 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.38 with all the nuclear weapons out there, 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.29 you know, like Russia which has faded a bit. 00:08:11.32\00:08:13.86 We still take them very seriously 00:08:13.89\00:08:15.32 because they can cause a lot of harm, 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.26 but the world is shifting, 00:08:17.29\00:08:18.99 and on this program it's my job to remind people 00:08:19.03\00:08:22.26 that religion as in the soul of a human being, 00:08:22.30\00:08:26.17 it's the most important thing at play. 00:08:26.20\00:08:29.24 Religion cannot be unaffected by this changing dynamic. 00:08:29.27\00:08:33.11 It has to stand firm. Yeah. 00:08:33.14\00:08:35.01 And, you know, China is for mostly for worse, 00:08:35.04\00:08:39.51 I was gonna say, for better or worse 00:08:39.55\00:08:40.88 has spent a lot of effort 00:08:40.92\00:08:42.38 restricting religious dissidents 00:08:42.42\00:08:45.09 or even just religious sensibility 00:08:45.12\00:08:47.46 and in our reaction to their rise to power, 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.03 it's possible 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.39 that we will in a self-protective way 00:08:51.43\00:08:52.99 be turning around and restricting 00:08:53.03\00:08:55.90 free religious thought within the West. 00:08:55.93\00:08:58.73 Sure. 00:08:58.77\00:09:00.10 So, it's an interesting period. 00:09:00.14\00:09:01.94 So, you let's say, 00:09:01.97\00:09:05.04 you've been to a few different countries, 00:09:05.07\00:09:06.41 I've been to a few, 00:09:06.44\00:09:07.78 where do we see this going now with a global, 00:09:07.81\00:09:11.35 you know, there was a period 00:09:11.38\00:09:12.71 of about 100, 150 years ago 00:09:12.75\00:09:14.95 a global missions for Christianity 00:09:14.98\00:09:16.69 particularly exploded. 00:09:16.72\00:09:18.89 You think we'll see another repeat of that? 00:09:18.92\00:09:20.39 Or is it coming in? 00:09:20.42\00:09:22.96 You know, we were told 00:09:22.99\00:09:24.49 by one of the founders 00:09:24.53\00:09:26.90 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.93 Mrs. Ellen White. 00:09:28.96\00:09:30.37 She said that what we don't do in times of prosperity, 00:09:30.40\00:09:33.07 we'll have to do during very difficult times, 00:09:33.10\00:09:35.64 and I believe the Bible does tell us 00:09:35.67\00:09:38.31 that this message must go out. 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.11 This is the Great Commission of Matthew Chapter 28. 00:09:40.14\00:09:42.31 Matthew 24 says, 00:09:42.34\00:09:44.11 this gospel has to be preached in all the world. 00:09:44.15\00:09:47.12 It's got to go to all the kingdoms. 00:09:47.15\00:09:48.95 The problem is, if we're not doing it now, 00:09:48.98\00:09:52.19 when we have the freedoms, 00:09:52.22\00:09:53.99 then we're certainly going to have to do it 00:09:54.02\00:09:55.42 during very difficult times. 00:09:55.46\00:09:57.33 I believe that the door will slowly close. 00:09:57.36\00:10:01.33 So, there we'll have, 00:10:01.36\00:10:02.70 there will have to be sneaky ways 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.07 of going out in newness. 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.43 Well, sneaky but not innovative like the... 00:10:05.47\00:10:11.41 I'm trying to think of the Protestants 00:10:11.44\00:10:13.17 that went door to door in Switzerland 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.41 and other places, they were salesmen. 00:10:15.44\00:10:17.18 Yeah. 00:10:17.21\00:10:19.28 In the post Reformation era, 00:10:19.31\00:10:21.15 some of them undercover of selling 00:10:21.18\00:10:24.29 basically tinkerers, and so on, 00:10:24.32\00:10:25.65 selling stuff door to door 00:10:25.69\00:10:27.02 they were then sharing the Bible 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.52 and selling God's Word. 00:10:28.56\00:10:30.56 I remember when I was in Cambodia, 00:10:30.59\00:10:32.93 I met a pastor from Vietnam. 00:10:32.96\00:10:36.40 And as I was talking to him, 00:10:36.43\00:10:38.77 he was sharing with me the difficulties 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.64 that they have to take everything underground now, 00:10:40.67\00:10:43.20 they can't do it on the surface 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.71 because everybody's watching them. 00:10:44.74\00:10:46.68 And I said to him, 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.41 well, I will be praying for you. 00:10:48.44\00:10:50.05 In fact, I would like to pray 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.41 that you will have the freedoms 00:10:51.45\00:10:52.78 to be able to share that and he says, please, please, 00:10:52.81\00:10:55.48 don't, don't pray for that 00:10:55.52\00:10:57.65 because the work is spreading faster underground. 00:10:57.69\00:11:01.09 You and I think alike, 00:11:01.12\00:11:02.46 I've seen experientially 00:11:02.49\00:11:03.99 within the Adventist Church in particular. 00:11:04.03\00:11:05.73 But reading 00:11:05.76\00:11:07.10 Christian church history in general, 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.46 it was turned in times of difficulty, 00:11:08.50\00:11:10.20 even persecution that it went quicker. 00:11:10.23\00:11:12.27 And that's the... 00:11:12.30\00:11:13.64 For us today this pastor, it was very interesting. 00:11:13.67\00:11:16.17 This pastor said, 00:11:16.20\00:11:17.54 the challenges really are that it's on the surface, 00:11:17.57\00:11:21.84 but it was growing so much faster 00:11:21.88\00:11:24.01 when it was underground. 00:11:24.05\00:11:25.38 So, he says, please, whatever you do, 00:11:25.41\00:11:27.02 don't pray for the religious freedom 00:11:27.05\00:11:30.05 that we have 00:11:30.09\00:11:31.42 or religious freedom 00:11:31.45\00:11:32.79 for the work to be able to carry out. 00:11:32.82\00:11:34.49 Pray that the work will continue underground 00:11:34.52\00:11:37.13 because as it continues underground, 00:11:37.16\00:11:39.56 it will spread so much faster than above ground. 00:11:39.59\00:11:42.66 In a document that we will likely hear 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.04 a lot more of on the environment, 00:11:48.07\00:11:51.71 Pope Francis speaks of the world 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.21 as our sister who is hurt, wounded and dying. 00:11:54.24\00:11:58.38 He may have a personal agenda to that, 00:11:58.41\00:12:00.88 but there's no question that in our moral 00:12:00.92\00:12:03.99 as well as a situational sense the world is hurt. 00:12:04.02\00:12:08.39 And when you talk about religious liberty, 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.19 it's obvious that in many countries 00:12:10.23\00:12:12.46 people are suffering for their faith, 00:12:12.49\00:12:14.73 whether it's the Uyghurs in China, 00:12:14.76\00:12:17.17 in concentration camps, 00:12:17.20\00:12:18.97 as involuntary organ donors being tortured and killed 00:12:19.00\00:12:23.81 in large numbers. 00:12:23.84\00:12:25.34 Religious liberty is the source of a lot of that hurt. 00:12:25.37\00:12:30.45 Even in the United States, 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.28 many people that believe differently 00:12:32.31\00:12:34.82 than the socially accepted religious norm 00:12:34.85\00:12:37.25 are being socially hurt. 00:12:37.29\00:12:40.29 We need to recognize that we're all hurt 00:12:40.32\00:12:43.06 but we can all be healers, 00:12:43.09\00:12:45.59 not just those that demonstrate against police abuses, 00:12:45.63\00:12:49.76 we need to demonstrate against abuses of conscience 00:12:49.80\00:12:53.27 all around the world. 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.54 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed.
