Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, we were in a technological buzz. 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.37 Deep discussion. Yeah. 00:00:06.40\00:00:08.60 Let me tell you something, 00:00:08.64\00:00:09.97 I haven't mentioned on this program before. 00:00:10.01\00:00:11.34 This is the moment to repeat it. 00:00:11.37\00:00:13.01 I had an epiphany. 00:00:13.04\00:00:16.31 A few decades ago 00:00:16.34\00:00:17.78 when I came back from Australia 00:00:17.81\00:00:19.41 to work at a publishing house in Boise, Idaho, 00:00:19.45\00:00:22.42 large publishing house for the Adventist Church, 00:00:22.45\00:00:24.65 a couple of hundred employees. 00:00:24.69\00:00:26.86 They've moved under some duress, 00:00:26.89\00:00:28.96 financial duress from the Bay area 00:00:28.99\00:00:31.43 near Silicon Valley. 00:00:31.46\00:00:33.90 And things have become so expensive. 00:00:33.93\00:00:35.96 And after the move, and I arrived, 00:00:36.00\00:00:39.77 I think a week after 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.14 they made it to the new plan, things were in disarray, 00:00:41.17\00:00:43.61 and the equipment seemed to suddenly aged 00:00:43.64\00:00:46.44 because of the move. 00:00:46.47\00:00:47.81 I think, in some ways, 00:00:47.84\00:00:49.18 the move did sort of highlight the need to upgrade 00:00:49.21\00:00:52.11 and they just spent about 200,000 00:00:52.15\00:00:55.45 to upgrade the typesetting equipment 00:00:55.48\00:00:59.42 and when we repackaged it and put it together. 00:00:59.45\00:01:02.22 It was ancient, didn't have flexibility. 00:01:02.26\00:01:04.86 It was on its way up. 00:01:04.89\00:01:06.63 And we made a choice 00:01:06.66\00:01:08.00 that we just had to dump it start from scratch. 00:01:08.03\00:01:10.87 And amazingly for one whole year, 00:01:10.90\00:01:13.23 we produced everything 00:01:13.27\00:01:14.80 on a IBM basic home PC 00:01:14.84\00:01:20.41 with 300 dot Apple laser printer. 00:01:20.44\00:01:24.95 And nobody sort of noticed, it's amazing, 00:01:24.98\00:01:27.95 but I remember the type guys will get there. 00:01:27.98\00:01:30.49 You know, they see this like an ink splotch. 00:01:30.52\00:01:33.66 So a number of us had to go around 00:01:33.69\00:01:35.56 and check on technology. 00:01:35.59\00:01:38.03 And in the middle of all of this, 00:01:38.06\00:01:39.46 we decided to reprint the, 00:01:39.49\00:01:41.26 I think 9 volumes of the Ellen White Testimonies 00:01:41.30\00:01:46.43 that had been done 00:01:46.47\00:01:47.80 on hot metal type decades earlier 00:01:47.84\00:01:49.44 and was getting worn out. 00:01:49.47\00:01:50.81 We need to go electronic, 00:01:50.84\00:01:52.31 we're not up and running on desktop. 00:01:52.34\00:01:55.54 So we hunted around and Ray Kurzweil, 00:01:55.58\00:02:01.38 electronics guru, 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.39 known by many of the young people at the time 00:02:03.42\00:02:05.15 was the guy that did the music synthesizer, 00:02:05.19\00:02:07.92 but he had developed the tech scanner. 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.29 And the first model was something like $5 million, 00:02:10.33\00:02:16.10 I think, a lot of money. 00:02:16.13\00:02:18.80 And we debated whether we would buy one 00:02:18.83\00:02:23.17 because we needed to, we couldn't typeset it 00:02:23.20\00:02:25.11 and errors would have been introduced. 00:02:25.14\00:02:26.91 Well, we didn't have $5 million, 00:02:26.94\00:02:28.28 but while we were looking it went down to 500,000. 00:02:28.31\00:02:32.21 Oh, it's pretty good, but we decided in the end, 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.85 we would contract with a company that had one. 00:02:34.88\00:02:37.75 And as I remember we paid $30,000 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.82 to have this whole set scanned in. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.06 By the time we've done the job, 00:02:42.09\00:02:44.63 a tech scanner that was much better 00:02:44.66\00:02:47.03 had been developed by the Kurzweil 00:02:47.06\00:02:48.70 that was down to about $5,000. 00:02:48.73\00:02:51.83 And I'm telling you today, if you go to Walmart, 00:02:51.87\00:02:54.84 an inkjet not an inkjet... 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.84 Yeah, an inkjet printer, 00:02:56.87\00:03:00.51 will have a scanner built in, and a tech scanner 00:03:00.54\00:03:03.78 and a much better one than we had back then 00:03:03.81\00:03:05.95 maybe $30 to $50. 00:03:05.98\00:03:08.82 I got news for you. 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.19 I have an app on my phone 00:03:10.22\00:03:11.55 that I can just take the picture... 00:03:11.59\00:03:12.92 That's true. 00:03:12.95\00:03:14.29 And it will just copy the text over right off the bat. 00:03:14.32\00:03:17.29 So we've come and now it'll mix fonts 00:03:17.33\00:03:20.70 and even languages and all the rest, right. 00:03:20.73\00:03:22.06 Yeah, exactly. 00:03:22.10\00:03:23.43 So I saw it firsthand the logarithmic progression 00:03:23.47\00:03:28.60 of this development. 00:03:28.64\00:03:32.87 I've said it many times, you know, in school, 00:03:32.91\00:03:35.24 at least when I was in school, 00:03:35.28\00:03:36.61 we used to study the Industrial Revolution, 00:03:36.64\00:03:38.71 which over about 100 years revolutionized the world 00:03:38.75\00:03:41.85 settlement patterns, employment, 00:03:41.88\00:03:43.59 social restructuring. 00:03:43.62\00:03:45.15 We've gone through a far more radical shift 00:03:45.19\00:03:47.56 with the computer revolution in a shorter time 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.93 than the Industrial Revolution and it's not stopped. 00:03:51.96\00:03:54.40 And Ray Kurzweil has become a futurist 00:03:54.43\00:03:56.80 and I know he has a theory now. 00:03:56.83\00:03:59.27 I'm sure he's wrong on the time 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.64 that this curve will reach infinity. 00:04:01.67\00:04:04.97 In other words, it'll be a vertical curve of development 00:04:05.01\00:04:07.74 around the year 2035, 00:04:07.78\00:04:10.11 I think this is year, the point of singularity. 00:04:10.15\00:04:13.75 Not sure will be, 00:04:13.78\00:04:15.12 but the principle is there and it's also a principle 00:04:15.15\00:04:17.72 you can apply it at the national debt, 00:04:17.75\00:04:19.19 another things like that. 00:04:19.22\00:04:20.56 But in actuality... 00:04:20.59\00:04:21.92 Knowledge as the Bible says is going to explode. 00:04:21.96\00:04:24.13 It will, but that's an understanding 00:04:24.16\00:04:27.33 of knowledge of Bible prophecy, 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.60 but technologically wise 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.33 things are beginning to plateau right now. 00:04:31.37\00:04:33.97 On certain areas like the silicon chip, 00:04:34.00\00:04:36.57 they've reached the physical limits... 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.27 I mean, even iPhones, 00:04:38.31\00:04:39.77 the latest developments, they're not like, 00:04:39.81\00:04:41.81 "Wow, got to have that." 00:04:41.84\00:04:44.05 Drones for the drone technology. 00:04:44.08\00:04:46.21 They have all this locked in, 00:04:46.25\00:04:47.68 you know, when I fly that drone, 00:04:47.72\00:04:49.18 there's 19 satellites I'm locked into, 00:04:49.22\00:04:52.49 and there's certain fields. 00:04:52.52\00:04:54.16 I was flying it last week 00:04:54.19\00:04:55.66 through our big metropolis of Jefferson of 2000 people 00:04:55.69\00:04:59.49 and I couldn't fly over the jail. 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.53 I was downtown, it stopped me 00:05:02.56\00:05:04.17 and it said that there's a jail there. 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.50 And I couldn't go there. 00:05:06.53\00:05:07.87 So technology today is, it's a benefit, 00:05:07.90\00:05:11.57 but then at the same time, 00:05:11.61\00:05:12.97 like with the latest Apple 13.5 update, it is... 00:05:13.01\00:05:17.91 That's an automatic login when you do that 00:05:17.95\00:05:20.42 that you're logged in for this... 00:05:20.45\00:05:22.58 Well, we're clearly in this Kurzweil, 00:05:22.62\00:05:25.15 I haven't read his stuff in the last few months, 00:05:25.19\00:05:27.09 but he's probably regrouping of it 00:05:27.12\00:05:28.92 because yeah, because interrupted, 00:05:28.96\00:05:31.09 it's not gone backwards, 00:05:31.13\00:05:32.46 but there's a consolidation stage. 00:05:32.49\00:05:34.60 And clearly, the chips in the computers 00:05:34.63\00:05:38.00 have reached that they need a new medium. 00:05:38.03\00:05:40.70 The silicon chip has reached almost the limit, 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.87 although we're already in multiple cores 00:05:42.90\00:05:45.41 where they're getting the same sort of thing. 00:05:45.44\00:05:46.78 So one way or another, there is an onward and upward 00:05:46.81\00:05:49.91 and no one can predict, 00:05:49.94\00:05:51.41 but it's what you can safely predict 00:05:51.45\00:05:53.62 it's massively changing the norms of our life. 00:05:53.65\00:05:57.72 Everyday. 00:05:57.75\00:05:59.09 And so you can't counteract it, 00:05:59.12\00:06:00.96 but I think it needs to be factored in 00:06:00.99\00:06:02.72 when we're talking about 00:06:02.76\00:06:04.09 how a person of faith reacts to a world. 00:06:04.13\00:06:08.06 It's not the old world, 00:06:08.10\00:06:09.43 you need to realize the complications 00:06:09.46\00:06:12.17 that are coming our way and the oversight. 00:06:12.20\00:06:15.10 And just like Daniel, 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.67 you know, the king tricked, 00:06:17.71\00:06:21.34 you know, lay down the law that, 00:06:21.38\00:06:22.94 you know, if you pray to anyone but him, you're dead, 00:06:22.98\00:06:25.75 but Daniel goes into his room and prays as normal. 00:06:25.78\00:06:28.98 Fine, if that's your commitment, 00:06:29.02\00:06:32.69 that's how you should act, 00:06:32.72\00:06:34.06 but don't think that the things are done 00:06:34.09\00:06:35.56 in secret anymore. 00:06:35.59\00:06:36.93 No. 00:06:36.96\00:06:38.29 And for us, we've got to be as bold as Daniel was, 00:06:38.33\00:06:40.83 without having any fear, to be able to just stand for... 00:06:40.86\00:06:43.26 And that's really... Thank you. 00:06:43.30\00:06:44.63 You've got it to my... 00:06:44.67\00:06:46.00 I think this is the time to really show your colors. 00:06:46.03\00:06:49.57 Yeah, well, the real Christian stand up today. 00:06:49.60\00:06:51.77 Yes. 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.14 And rather than fade back in back to 00:06:53.17\00:06:56.11 what in another program really troubled me. 00:06:56.14\00:06:58.51 This is not the time for half-heartedness 00:06:58.55\00:07:01.55 to sort of retreat and think you can wait to that. 00:07:01.58\00:07:04.89 But if you stand, 00:07:04.92\00:07:06.86 then you're being socially awkward. 00:07:06.89\00:07:10.13 You're not being normal, you're not complying. 00:07:10.16\00:07:14.73 So is this really the time to stand? 00:07:14.76\00:07:17.47 Or is this still the time to sit down 00:07:17.50\00:07:19.80 and quietly stand? 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.90 I think it's the time to stand. 00:07:21.94\00:07:23.27 That's my bottom line, 00:07:23.30\00:07:25.87 but everyone has to move by conscience 00:07:25.91\00:07:28.51 as they're compelled to, 00:07:28.54\00:07:31.15 but I think in a time of great stress, 00:07:31.18\00:07:34.55 a time of great falling away of faith, 00:07:34.58\00:07:37.42 this is the time to rediscover or discover God and faith, 00:07:37.45\00:07:42.52 and then live up to it in a maximum way 00:07:42.56\00:07:45.69 not be half-hearted Christians. 00:07:45.73\00:07:47.06 It's never been good, 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.63 but I do believe 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.27 and, you know, we speak to people of all faiths, 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.50 but speaking as a Christian and what I read in the Bible, 00:07:52.53\00:07:56.71 I can see that God is merciful, 00:07:56.74\00:07:58.87 not willing that any should perish. 00:07:58.91\00:08:00.58 I think in easier times, people of good intention, 00:08:00.61\00:08:05.71 but not strong, overly strong faith 00:08:05.75\00:08:10.25 probably always have been saved, 00:08:10.29\00:08:12.42 but I think in a time of great stress, 00:08:12.45\00:08:15.19 it will take a greater faith 00:08:15.22\00:08:16.83 to not that God needs a greater faith to road, 00:08:16.86\00:08:20.66 but it will take a greater faith 00:08:20.70\00:08:24.00 to give your self some interference 00:08:24.03\00:08:26.17 on these delusions, 00:08:26.20\00:08:28.30 like even the health message in the Adventism, 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.67 you're not saved because you eat 00:08:30.71\00:08:32.84 or don't eat certain foods, 00:08:32.87\00:08:34.61 but if you eat certain bad food 00:08:34.64\00:08:38.68 or indulge in certain bad activities 00:08:38.71\00:08:40.92 that dull your perception, 00:08:40.95\00:08:42.88 you certainly can be lost 00:08:42.92\00:08:44.25 because you can't see the difference 00:08:44.29\00:08:46.25 between truth and error. 00:08:46.29\00:08:47.62 So you're saying that 00:08:47.66\00:08:48.99 I can't eat my way to heaven now. 00:08:49.02\00:08:50.36 No. You know, I had all this wrong. 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.43 I am saying that. 00:08:52.46\00:08:54.50 Yeah, that's exactly right. 00:08:54.53\00:08:55.86 But a lot of people haven't sort of grasp that. 00:08:55.90\00:08:58.13 So yes, God's not going to damn you for that, 00:08:58.17\00:09:01.30 but you may damn yourself in a very difficult time. 00:09:01.34\00:09:04.94 When times get straighter, the need is, 00:09:04.97\00:09:07.71 as the Bible over and over again, 00:09:07.74\00:09:09.08 Old and New Testament, it says, this calls for perception. 00:09:09.11\00:09:12.75 This calls for understanding. 00:09:12.78\00:09:15.08 The onus is on the person of faith 00:09:15.12\00:09:16.99 to see the difference between right and wrong, 00:09:17.02\00:09:19.49 and the need for action and interaction. 00:09:19.52\00:09:21.62 It would be interesting to see if you could actually look in 00:09:21.66\00:09:24.59 and take a poll of the thoughts of people 00:09:24.63\00:09:26.83 during this shutdown where everybody stayed at home. 00:09:26.86\00:09:30.07 Were they deeper into the Word of God 00:09:30.10\00:09:33.34 or they deeper into social media? 00:09:33.37\00:09:37.31 I think the latter, which, 00:09:37.34\00:09:39.74 and maybe we need to have another program on it. 00:09:39.77\00:09:41.48 I think it's not coincidental that social action activity 00:09:41.51\00:09:47.18 is that suddenly is a desire to do that 00:09:47.22\00:09:51.35 rather than spirituality and talk about God 00:09:51.39\00:09:54.46 and His wonderful love. 00:09:54.49\00:09:56.96 It's a Catch-22 00:09:56.99\00:09:58.33 because someone that's highly motivated 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.23 for spiritual godly things 00:10:00.26\00:10:01.66 should have a sensitivity to social action, 00:10:01.70\00:10:04.67 but that's not the main game. 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.47 Jesus said, "The poor you will have with you always." 00:10:06.50\00:10:08.57 Yeah. 00:10:08.60\00:10:09.94 And that's not the actual nature of people 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.67 to want to do that too. 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.51 Right. 00:10:14.54\00:10:15.88 Interesting times, 00:10:15.91\00:10:17.25 but I thought of anybody that I know 00:10:17.28\00:10:19.28 to talk technology with you would make sense. 00:10:19.31\00:10:21.35 And I know you see it, now I haven't even realized, 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.89 as you said, with your, with the drone that 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.82 now it's got its own inbuilt inhibition 00:10:26.86\00:10:29.36 against going certain places 00:10:29.39\00:10:30.93 interacting with other software. 00:10:30.96\00:10:34.10 And it's all put in there by the manufacturers 00:10:34.13\00:10:37.47 that even airports. 00:10:37.50\00:10:38.83 If there's an airport nearby, you can't go up so high, 00:10:38.87\00:10:41.47 you can't even go near that field. 00:10:41.50\00:10:44.14 It's... 00:10:44.17\00:10:45.51 So the days of the guy caught at 30,000 feet 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.64 in His lawn chair with balloons, 00:10:48.68\00:10:50.31 remember that story? 00:10:50.35\00:10:51.68 Those are over. Those are the analog days. 00:10:51.71\00:10:54.05 You could still do that by popping a balloon. 00:10:54.08\00:10:56.22 Yeah. 00:10:56.25\00:10:57.59 Well, so where do you go with your drone now 00:10:57.62\00:11:01.49 and with your faith, what do you think is the next? 00:11:01.52\00:11:04.69 I mean, I have to 00:11:04.73\00:11:06.06 during this time period that we have right now, 00:11:06.09\00:11:08.33 you've got to be focused in. 00:11:08.36\00:11:10.63 For me, I have to study more. 00:11:10.67\00:11:12.97 I have to know 00:11:13.00\00:11:14.34 because in order to be able to stand, 00:11:14.37\00:11:16.10 you got to be able to know what you believe, 00:11:16.14\00:11:18.34 to be able to stand. 00:11:18.37\00:11:22.11 A few years ago, 00:11:22.14\00:11:23.55 as part of a presidential election, 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.55 a fairly well-known comedian decided to run 00:11:26.58\00:11:30.05 as a gag candidacy for President. 00:11:30.09\00:11:33.29 And I will remember him standing up 00:11:33.32\00:11:35.49 as part of the preliminaries on television on a comedy show, 00:11:35.52\00:11:40.10 but still it was a pseudo campaign. 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.86 And he said with a very serious face, 00:11:42.90\00:11:44.87 which he normally had anyway, and he said, 00:11:44.90\00:11:49.50 "Lies have been going around, 00:11:49.54\00:11:52.34 rumors have been going around, 00:11:52.37\00:11:53.98 rumors of the very worst kind, 00:11:54.01\00:11:58.25 true ones." 00:11:58.28\00:12:00.32 We live in a time of misinformation. 00:12:00.35\00:12:03.02 And yet ironically, 00:12:03.05\00:12:04.39 we live in a time when information 00:12:04.42\00:12:07.09 and facts and figures and descriptions 00:12:07.12\00:12:09.86 are just flowing around us as the water in a stream. 00:12:09.89\00:12:14.30 As the Bible said, "Knowledge will be increased 00:12:14.33\00:12:16.87 and men run to and fro." 00:12:16.90\00:12:19.00 What we need to make sure 00:12:19.03\00:12:20.74 in this time of electronic over information is that 00:12:20.77\00:12:24.34 we are connected with the divine 00:12:24.37\00:12:26.47 and that we operate with integrity and honesty 00:12:26.51\00:12:29.74 in all that we do. 00:12:29.78\00:12:32.21 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:32.25\00:12:35.08
