Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.82\00:00:30.76 This is a program designed to get you thinking about 00:00:30.79\00:00:34.20 religious liberty in the US and around the world 00:00:34.23\00:00:37.17 and to bring you some up-to-date information 00:00:37.20\00:00:39.50 on religious freedom and how you can relate 00:00:39.53\00:00:43.41 to this very important principle. 00:00:43.44\00:00:44.81 My name is Lincoln Steed, Editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:44.84\00:00:48.48 and my guest on the program is Alden Ho, Pastor Alden Ho. 00:00:48.51\00:00:51.98 Interesting background, Singapore, Canada, 00:00:54.98\00:00:57.95 now pastor in the US and Texas, 00:00:57.99\00:01:00.32 and I know, a man of a lot of technological insight. 00:01:00.36\00:01:05.53 So let's talk about something that we've touched 00:01:05.56\00:01:07.66 on a few times in the past on this program. 00:01:07.70\00:01:09.83 But I think in the wake of the COVID pandemic 00:01:09.86\00:01:13.57 or not in the wake, but we're in the middle of it. 00:01:13.60\00:01:15.54 We're right in it. 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.71 Electronics is not to be dismissed. 00:01:17.74\00:01:19.37 And, of course, 00:01:19.41\00:01:20.74 we're now communicating primarily 00:01:20.78\00:01:23.45 through all sorts of social networks 00:01:23.48\00:01:25.98 and Zoom for meetings and so on. 00:01:26.01\00:01:28.15 So we're very beholden, very under the thumb, 00:01:28.18\00:01:32.52 if you like of technology. 00:01:32.55\00:01:34.52 Do you see a role or a possibility 00:01:34.56\00:01:37.96 as we move into all of this, 00:01:37.99\00:01:39.33 that the very technology that we need 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.96 and love could really inhibit freedom in religious practice? 00:01:43.00\00:01:47.84 You know, I was... 00:01:47.87\00:01:49.20 As you're talking, I'm thinking about 00:01:49.24\00:01:51.14 how would the world be today amidst this COVID-19 thing 00:01:51.17\00:01:54.84 if there was no internet right now? 00:01:54.88\00:01:57.91 People would go stir crazy literally, 00:01:57.95\00:01:59.95 they would because people don't even know 00:01:59.98\00:02:01.38 how to go outside and do the regular things. 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.89 But today with all this that's going on. 00:02:03.92\00:02:08.79 Everything is getting down to control, 00:02:08.82\00:02:11.53 getting down to passing on information. 00:02:11.56\00:02:14.56 The national centre for whatever that they have... 00:02:14.60\00:02:17.27 Disease. 00:02:17.30\00:02:18.63 No, no, no, it's where they collect information. 00:02:18.67\00:02:22.27 It's a data collection place, and they're just dumping 00:02:22.30\00:02:27.24 lots and lots of information about you and I 00:02:27.28\00:02:29.24 and everybody else. 00:02:29.28\00:02:31.71 Well, I don't know if you've studied it, 00:02:31.75\00:02:34.58 but it's a few decades now 00:02:34.62\00:02:36.55 since the US government decided 00:02:36.58\00:02:39.22 as an aspiration 00:02:39.25\00:02:40.62 which they are making a reality 00:02:40.66\00:02:42.39 to collect all information. 00:02:42.42\00:02:44.49 Everything, as much as they can, yeah. 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.29 Everything, they haven't limited their scope, 00:02:46.33\00:02:48.26 everything, all electronic data. 00:02:48.30\00:02:50.67 And it's being sucked up like a vacuum 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.90 and kept in giant memory storage devices 00:02:52.93\00:02:57.91 and then sifted through in more and more 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.98 sophisticated manner. 00:03:01.01\00:03:04.01 I remember when it first came up in Washington, 00:03:04.05\00:03:06.92 it was called Project Carnivore. 00:03:06.95\00:03:08.98 Carnivore. 00:03:09.02\00:03:10.35 And that bothered a lot of people 00:03:10.39\00:03:11.72 'cause that sounds rather sinister. 00:03:11.75\00:03:13.09 Yeah. So they had to change that. 00:03:13.12\00:03:15.12 But, you know, we're in an era where the craziest things, 00:03:15.16\00:03:18.73 at least for a time, 00:03:18.76\00:03:20.10 some of them are given respectability. 00:03:20.13\00:03:22.06 I can remember early on, 00:03:22.10\00:03:23.77 I think, it was in the Bush administration. 00:03:23.80\00:03:26.00 I listened to a lot of hearings in Congress, 00:03:26.03\00:03:27.80 and it came out that out of the White House, 00:03:27.84\00:03:30.74 they were running a terrorism futures operation. 00:03:30.77\00:03:34.31 They were having people invest 00:03:34.34\00:03:38.65 in paying or putting money on 00:03:38.68\00:03:41.02 this date for a terrorist thing or that date, 00:03:41.05\00:03:44.25 and they had a very complicated algorithm, 00:03:44.29\00:03:47.02 and they believe that 00:03:47.06\00:03:48.39 the investment pattern itself would predict 00:03:48.42\00:03:52.03 when the event would take place. 00:03:52.06\00:03:53.93 That's crazy. 00:03:53.96\00:03:55.30 And it was shut down quickly when the Senate has got 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.57 an inkling of it. 00:03:57.60\00:03:58.93 But I think in some ways 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.70 through a lot of the sifting of information 00:04:00.74\00:04:02.64 and the seeing patterns of visiting different sites 00:04:02.67\00:04:06.37 and the choices that people see. 00:04:06.41\00:04:08.68 We're basically being double guests in a group way 00:04:08.71\00:04:12.78 by the electronic medium, or those that control it, 00:04:12.81\00:04:15.98 the high priests of the new technology. 00:04:16.02\00:04:17.65 So why do you think they're doing this? 00:04:17.69\00:04:19.02 Why do you think they're collecting this? 00:04:19.05\00:04:20.39 I don't think there's always a bad intention, 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.76 but a tool has been handed to the modern overseers 00:04:21.79\00:04:27.03 to control populations or not so much control, 00:04:27.06\00:04:29.83 to oversee, and to understand 00:04:29.86\00:04:32.87 even almost what you're thinking. 00:04:32.90\00:04:35.74 But, you know, all this, we know that all these things 00:04:35.77\00:04:38.21 are going to be used against us, 00:04:38.24\00:04:40.18 for God's people in the end time. 00:04:40.21\00:04:42.11 I mean, even just not even 00:04:42.14\00:04:44.38 dealing with the World Wide Web, 00:04:44.41\00:04:45.78 even the credit card. 00:04:45.81\00:04:47.55 They know, through American Express, 00:04:47.58\00:04:50.09 my spending habit, 00:04:50.12\00:04:51.45 they know where I go, they know what I buy. 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.16 And if I go to a place that I not normally go, 00:04:54.19\00:04:57.36 I get a phone call while I swipe that card 00:04:57.39\00:04:59.86 or insert that card, I get a phone call 00:04:59.89\00:05:01.73 from American Express and they said, 00:05:01.76\00:05:03.83 "Mr. Ho, we're just making sure 00:05:03.87\00:05:05.97 are you at such and such a place?" 00:05:06.00\00:05:08.47 They're collecting this, they know. 00:05:08.50\00:05:10.17 They know my spending habit, 00:05:10.21\00:05:11.54 they know that I don't go out and buy things on the Sabbath. 00:05:11.57\00:05:15.34 All this is being collected. 00:05:15.38\00:05:17.78 And I think one of these days 00:05:17.81\00:05:19.15 it's going to be used against us. 00:05:19.18\00:05:20.75 Of course, and in all societies, 00:05:20.78\00:05:23.45 information that comes up is used, it's evidence. 00:05:23.49\00:05:27.46 Depending on how free the society is, 00:05:27.49\00:05:29.76 it's used more and more, 00:05:29.79\00:05:31.13 or more or less aggressively, 00:05:31.16\00:05:32.49 but it'll be cited, I'm sure. 00:05:32.53\00:05:34.70 Yeah, years ago, 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.06 and I've mentioned on this program, 00:05:36.10\00:05:38.03 a fellow church member 00:05:38.07\00:05:39.53 who worked in some major downtown 00:05:39.57\00:05:42.70 Washington government office of... 00:05:42.74\00:05:44.91 I don't know the title but, you know, 00:05:44.94\00:05:46.27 the computer processing center, 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.24 he would come and he says "You have no idea." 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.21 He says that they understand everything about you, 00:05:50.25\00:05:52.11 what you're just saying, he says, 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.65 "You don't have to know who's a member of the church 00:05:53.68\00:05:57.19 or a political organization or whatever." 00:05:57.22\00:05:59.42 He says, "For example a Seventh-day Adventist," 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.36 he says, "Your car has got a built in GPS," 00:06:01.39\00:06:05.06 not the one that people know about. 00:06:05.09\00:06:07.20 There's a GPS in every car and the car companies told me 00:06:07.23\00:06:09.46 about it years ago, 00:06:09.50\00:06:10.83 they can switch your car off remotely, 00:06:10.87\00:06:12.77 anywhere and it tells where it is. 00:06:12.80\00:06:15.54 The GPS, your buying habits, your phone tracks you. 00:06:15.57\00:06:19.61 And so you put all that into a matrix and he says, 00:06:19.64\00:06:22.34 "When that's all put in, there's a huge hole 00:06:22.38\00:06:24.28 around the Sabbath in your travel, 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.45 your buying habits, your location, 00:06:26.48\00:06:28.58 the whole deal." 00:06:28.62\00:06:29.95 Hopefully, there's a hole around you. 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.55 No, I don't mind that. That's great. 00:06:31.59\00:06:33.42 I'm self-identified as a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:06:33.46\00:06:35.22 I think. 00:06:35.26\00:06:36.59 But you must remember, information cut loose 00:06:36.62\00:06:40.50 from context can be very damning. 00:06:40.53\00:06:43.40 And I remember hearing an FBI agent 00:06:43.43\00:06:46.60 once on YouTube explaining this and he says, 00:06:46.63\00:06:49.84 "Just remember," he says, 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.71 "You're not the one that gets to decide 00:06:51.74\00:06:55.04 what is right or wrong about what you do." 00:06:55.08\00:06:57.75 But I think... 00:06:57.78\00:06:59.11 It's a construction someone else puts on it. 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.92 The greater concern that we have to have 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.95 is not so much about Uncle Sam watching over us 00:07:02.98\00:07:06.69 but to understand that even more so, 00:07:06.72\00:07:09.59 even more not just where we go and what we do... 00:07:09.62\00:07:12.26 Now first of all the watchers, that used to be the term 00:07:12.29\00:07:14.66 for the angels, the heavily beings. 00:07:14.70\00:07:16.43 Right. They watch but... 00:07:16.46\00:07:17.80 But our thoughts are even being recorded in heaven. 00:07:17.83\00:07:20.80 Right. 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.17 So that should be a greater concern. 00:07:22.20\00:07:23.54 Absolutely. 00:07:23.57\00:07:24.91 And I always try to point this out, 00:07:24.94\00:07:27.48 you know, the mark of the beast, which... 00:07:27.51\00:07:29.88 Adventists are only one group that read that in the Bible, 00:07:29.91\00:07:33.18 and, you know, people can run amuck on that. 00:07:33.21\00:07:35.45 Not that important, it's a matter of loyalty 00:07:35.48\00:07:37.35 and whether or not it's some sort of barcode 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.52 or a tattoo on your arm, doesn't really matter. 00:07:40.56\00:07:45.46 If you understand the dynamic, we have to be loyal to the God. 00:07:45.49\00:07:49.20 And when we talk about these mechanisms of control, 00:07:49.23\00:07:51.80 you can't be so paranoid that, you know, 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.57 in the worst case people wear a tin hat, the cut out, 00:07:54.60\00:07:56.91 the, you know, the attempt to hack their brain. 00:07:56.94\00:08:00.31 But may or may not have some validity in some cases. 00:08:00.34\00:08:04.18 But, you know, if you live in such fear, 00:08:04.21\00:08:06.98 there's no escaping, 00:08:07.02\00:08:08.35 I mean, because it's crowding in on us, 00:08:08.38\00:08:10.12 that I think we need to know. 00:08:10.15\00:08:11.89 As Jesus said, "We're coming to a time of such hazard." 00:08:11.92\00:08:16.19 He says, "Unless those days be shortened, 00:08:16.22\00:08:17.99 no flesh will survive." 00:08:18.03\00:08:19.96 He didn't just say no faith would survive. 00:08:20.00\00:08:21.33 Right, yeah. 00:08:21.36\00:08:22.70 These are hazardous times 00:08:22.73\00:08:24.23 and I think man and his progress, 00:08:24.27\00:08:26.10 which is wonderful, you know, 00:08:26.13\00:08:27.80 we're going through a period of, 00:08:27.84\00:08:30.41 I mean, COVID's a bad period, but, you know, 00:08:30.44\00:08:32.24 generally speaking, 00:08:32.27\00:08:33.61 the progress of man has been great. 00:08:33.64\00:08:35.28 I mean, even kings didn't have 00:08:35.31\00:08:36.88 a toilet in their palace in old days. 00:08:36.91\00:08:39.75 You look back at, you know, the Roman Emperor, 00:08:39.78\00:08:43.15 he didn't live as good as someone in the tenements 00:08:43.18\00:08:46.86 of New York, you know. 00:08:46.89\00:08:48.86 But we're creating a situation that has a downside. 00:08:48.89\00:08:54.06 And this is why I'm so bothered about the social distancing. 00:08:54.10\00:08:56.97 We shouldn't let the worst aspects 00:08:57.00\00:08:58.80 of this takeover from the clear advantages, 00:08:58.83\00:09:03.91 practical advantages that modernization 00:09:03.94\00:09:05.64 has brought to us. 00:09:05.67\00:09:07.01 But this is all brought about now 00:09:07.04\00:09:09.84 because everybody has their electronics, 00:09:09.88\00:09:11.81 unless you're on an old flip phone or, 00:09:11.85\00:09:14.88 you know, what they call a dumb phone, 00:09:14.92\00:09:16.48 today everything is being ramped up 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.35 so that they can collect more information, 00:09:19.39\00:09:21.72 supposedly, to be able to know everything about you that 00:09:21.76\00:09:25.46 even you don't even know yourself. 00:09:25.49\00:09:28.30 Well, that's the theory of these algorithms 00:09:28.33\00:09:33.37 that they work, that supposedly they can, 00:09:33.40\00:09:35.90 you know, Hollywood 00:09:35.94\00:09:37.77 is not very sophisticated in many areas. 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.04 I think it's a cesspool 00:09:41.08\00:09:45.71 of unchristian behavior. 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.08 But, you know, just like science fiction books 00:09:48.12\00:09:51.49 of another era, they're sort of extrapolating 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.49 what they know 00:09:53.52\00:09:54.86 and there was that movie, was it Inception? 00:09:54.89\00:09:56.86 I think was, but the idea 00:09:56.89\00:09:58.66 that you can identify a future crime. 00:09:58.69\00:10:01.03 That's really where we're heading now 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.93 since 9/11. 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.47 After the terrorist incident that we saw 00:10:05.50\00:10:07.14 there where someone killed himself 00:10:07.17\00:10:08.50 committing the crime. 00:10:08.54\00:10:09.87 You can't wait to catch them doing it, 00:10:09.90\00:10:11.41 you need to look back on a line of causality 00:10:11.44\00:10:14.08 and identify someone that might do such a thing. 00:10:14.11\00:10:16.44 But China's already doing these things 00:10:16.48\00:10:17.95 by giving their citizens certain reward points 00:10:17.98\00:10:21.95 for their behavior. 00:10:21.98\00:10:23.39 So are you a good Chinese citizen? 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.65 Is that coming to the US? 00:10:25.69\00:10:27.89 I spoke to a woman recently 00:10:27.92\00:10:31.09 who had just come back 00:10:31.13\00:10:34.66 from a visit to China, 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.06 where she'd visited several home churches. 00:10:36.10\00:10:38.50 And she said that the... 00:10:38.53\00:10:42.17 at least in the major areas, 00:10:42.20\00:10:43.64 when you're travelling along the road, 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.11 the radar is tracking not only your speed 00:10:45.14\00:10:48.58 but photographing you inside the car 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.31 to see what you're doing inside the car. 00:10:51.35\00:10:53.38 And when you turn off the road 00:10:53.42\00:10:55.15 to go to a little town to a church, 00:10:55.18\00:10:57.09 it immediately tags that 00:10:57.12\00:10:58.99 and it'll go back to the central control 00:10:59.02\00:11:02.56 and alert them that 00:11:02.59\00:11:04.69 you're now freelancing so they can track you down. 00:11:04.73\00:11:07.76 And I even saw an English car program recently 00:11:07.80\00:11:11.13 and they were laughing about it. 00:11:11.17\00:11:12.70 They were driving it, not along the freeway in China 00:11:12.73\00:11:17.24 and it was just constant flash, ding, ding, 00:11:17.27\00:11:19.57 every 100, 200 yards, no more the light was going off 00:11:19.61\00:11:24.25 and photographing their speed 00:11:24.28\00:11:25.88 and what you're doing inside the car. 00:11:25.91\00:11:27.72 It's interesting 'cause I was over there in China 00:11:27.75\00:11:29.98 and I preached several years ago. 00:11:30.02\00:11:31.92 And it was a hot day but when I actually 00:11:31.95\00:11:34.89 went to start preaching on a second level 00:11:34.92\00:11:36.89 with all these Bible workers there 00:11:36.93\00:11:38.63 and elders, they closed all the blinds, 00:11:38.66\00:11:41.20 they closed the windows, they closed all the drapery, 00:11:41.23\00:11:43.80 and then they turned on the air conditioning, 00:11:43.83\00:11:45.97 so that my voice could not be heard outside 00:11:46.00\00:11:48.57 or anything like that 00:11:48.60\00:11:49.94 just to protect me from speaking. 00:11:49.97\00:11:52.54 But there are satellites that can have radar 00:11:52.57\00:11:57.01 that will see through a home 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.11 and from space can see who's in the home 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.52 and I think under some circumstances 00:12:01.55\00:12:03.39 even pick up the sound. 00:12:03.42\00:12:04.75 It's phenomenal. 00:12:04.79\00:12:06.12 We're in an age of outstanding scientific development. 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.72 And by the way I thought of it... 00:12:09.76\00:12:12.16 A few years ago I visited your church 00:12:12.19\00:12:15.36 and you had a drone, as I remember, 00:12:15.40\00:12:17.73 pretty sophisticated drone. 00:12:17.77\00:12:19.10 I thought of you when I saw one of the pictures 00:12:19.13\00:12:21.00 out of Wuhan. 00:12:21.04\00:12:22.37 They had drones on the road holding up signs 00:12:22.40\00:12:26.04 telling people what to do, but the drone was fixed there, 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.64 it wasn't travelling around. 00:12:28.68\00:12:30.75 And again, the drone's watching. 00:12:30.78\00:12:32.55 And actually, to come to think of technology 00:12:32.58\00:12:34.95 I saw and you also were born in Singapore, right? 00:12:34.98\00:12:40.12 In Singapore, they are using... 00:12:40.16\00:12:43.32 Since they don't want officials out 00:12:43.36\00:12:44.83 and around among the population picking up COVID, 00:12:44.86\00:12:47.60 they have robotic dogs that were developed 00:12:47.63\00:12:52.40 by the US military roaming around in the parks 00:12:52.43\00:12:55.50 and they look very sinister and in their fullest equipment, 00:12:55.54\00:12:59.87 you know, they have weaponry 00:12:59.91\00:13:02.61 where they will kill you with them. 00:13:02.64\00:13:03.98 And they're taking pictures 00:13:04.01\00:13:05.35 and they're recording what you're doing. 00:13:05.38\00:13:06.72 Right. And it's speaking 00:13:06.75\00:13:08.08 and it's interacting with the people 00:13:08.12\00:13:09.45 and so this dog's... 00:13:09.48\00:13:10.82 And back in the control booth, the guy's watching can see 00:13:10.85\00:13:13.66 how people react and treat this dog. 00:13:13.69\00:13:17.33 But it's science fiction, pure and simple. 00:13:17.36\00:13:20.00 And these dogs, nothing can upend them. 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.36 They can climb any barrier, 00:13:22.40\00:13:25.63 go quite fast, climb a hill, whatever. 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.40 It's not just, you know, 00:13:28.44\00:13:29.97 the Lost in Space Robinson family 00:13:30.01\00:13:33.81 thing with their robots, you know, little wheels, 00:13:33.84\00:13:35.84 or like in the supermarket, checking inventory, 00:13:35.88\00:13:38.65 no, these are incredible, 00:13:38.68\00:13:40.68 almost surreal looking creatures. 00:13:40.72\00:13:43.28 And we're talking sometimes about even the Jetson family. 00:13:43.32\00:13:46.72 But this is... 00:13:46.76\00:13:48.29 These dogs are, they're monitoring, 00:13:48.32\00:13:51.09 they're watching, 00:13:51.13\00:13:52.46 they're doing all these things, and it makes you wonder, 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.23 once again, more information, more data collection. 00:13:55.26\00:13:57.80 Yeah. 00:13:57.83\00:13:59.17 And what are they going to do with all this stuff? 00:13:59.20\00:14:00.54 Right. And... 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.74 I mean, I started in religious liberty, 00:14:03.77\00:14:09.11 quoting from Tale of Two Cities. 00:14:09.14\00:14:11.11 That was part of my literary upbringing, 00:14:11.15\00:14:13.11 you know, Charles Dickens novel set 00:14:13.15\00:14:15.58 in the time of the French Revolution between, 00:14:15.62\00:14:18.02 the Tale of Two Cities is London and Paris, 00:14:18.05\00:14:20.62 London at peace, democracy, 00:14:20.66\00:14:23.02 and revolution just across the channel. 00:14:23.06\00:14:25.53 And he begins it by saying 00:14:25.56\00:14:27.13 "It was the best of times, 00:14:27.16\00:14:28.63 it was the worst of times," and that's what we live in. 00:14:28.66\00:14:31.63 On one level, it's never been better, 00:14:31.67\00:14:33.80 these advances are fantastic. 00:14:33.84\00:14:36.30 You know, who would do without them? 00:14:36.34\00:14:37.71 But we need to realize the worst lurks there, 00:14:37.74\00:14:40.24 and when times turn bad, 00:14:40.28\00:14:42.14 and when persecution rears again, 00:14:42.18\00:14:44.31 even in the West. 00:14:44.35\00:14:46.15 This will complicate things radically. 00:14:46.18\00:14:48.68 Let's take a break now. We'll be back shortly. 00:14:48.72\00:14:50.92 Interesting discussion I think of our times, 00:14:50.95\00:14:54.06 but with the eternal principle of religious liberty at stake. 00:14:54.09\00:14:57.16 Stay with us. 00:14:57.19\00:14:58.53
