Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break with guest Alden Ho, 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.90 we were, both I think, 00:00:05.93\00:00:07.84 waxing eloquent about the changes 00:00:07.87\00:00:10.47 that the COVID emergency is wrought. 00:00:10.51\00:00:12.87 And the social distancing is troubled me more and more. 00:00:12.91\00:00:15.71 Yeah. 00:00:15.74\00:00:17.08 And with that social distancing, 00:00:17.11\00:00:19.08 you compare, what you said before 00:00:19.11\00:00:20.95 about people going in the underground, 00:00:20.98\00:00:22.75 having meetings, but I'm not finding that now. 00:00:22.78\00:00:25.39 Social distancing has really stopped it 00:00:25.42\00:00:29.32 and Zoom has taken over taken over, whatever you think. 00:00:29.36\00:00:31.49 Right. And Zoom has its place. 00:00:31.53\00:00:35.13 But I don't know, isn't the Bible say, 00:00:35.16\00:00:38.80 "Forsake not to gather and get yourselves together?" 00:00:38.83\00:00:41.74 There were reasons for the early Christians 00:00:41.77\00:00:44.11 needing to gather and share experiences 00:00:44.14\00:00:49.01 and pray together. 00:00:49.04\00:00:50.38 Just as there have always been reasons 00:00:50.41\00:00:52.81 for any group with an agenda 00:00:52.85\00:00:55.18 needing to gather in the cell. 00:00:55.22\00:00:58.22 And I'm not really sure 00:00:58.25\00:00:59.95 in spite of all of the claims made, 00:00:59.99\00:01:02.02 even as far back as Tiananmen Square, 00:01:02.06\00:01:04.23 the Twitter 00:01:04.26\00:01:05.59 and all these other social media things 00:01:05.63\00:01:07.56 can mobilize a rebellion. 00:01:07.60\00:01:08.96 In fact, I'm not that so always a rebellion. 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.50 But, you know, 00:01:10.53\00:01:11.87 that they were talking about a rebellion. 00:01:11.90\00:01:13.34 But I'm not even that sure 00:01:13.37\00:01:15.14 that was called the green rebellion in Iran 00:01:15.17\00:01:17.87 when the young people rose up. 00:01:17.91\00:01:19.67 I don't think that was just social media, 00:01:19.71\00:01:21.88 but it was clearly a part of it. 00:01:21.91\00:01:24.25 And it wasn't successful anyway. 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.31 I don't think there's any real substitute 00:01:26.35\00:01:29.75 for face-to-face. 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.19 And so for us to hide our faces from other people, 00:01:32.22\00:01:36.49 keep to our homes... 00:01:36.52\00:01:39.33 That's what I believe at its fullest. 00:01:39.36\00:01:43.33 That's breaking down what I studied in school 00:01:43.37\00:01:45.83 is the social contract. 00:01:45.87\00:01:48.74 It would have been interesting to see 100 years ago 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.21 with that Spanish Flu when it came up, 00:01:51.24\00:01:53.54 where there underground meetings 00:01:53.58\00:01:55.24 that were going on, 00:01:55.28\00:01:56.61 or people more fearful because of their health. 00:01:56.64\00:01:58.75 They were fearful. 00:01:58.78\00:02:00.12 But I don't think they were the same prohibitions 00:02:00.15\00:02:03.85 from a central authority 00:02:03.89\00:02:05.22 'cause they didn't understand the disease very plainly. 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.76 It was people commuting to work apocryphally, 00:02:07.79\00:02:10.76 that would fall dead in the streetcar. 00:02:10.79\00:02:13.06 They seem healthy and gone. 00:02:13.09\00:02:16.10 Now we're doing some necessary steps 00:02:16.13\00:02:20.37 to contain it. 00:02:20.40\00:02:21.97 Some countries better than others, 00:02:22.00\00:02:23.54 and I don't think the US could hold it 00:02:23.57\00:02:25.14 and set up the highest. 00:02:25.17\00:02:27.11 It was late to the party and short of masks. 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.98 And we were even fed this information 00:02:30.01\00:02:32.38 which should get people a little suspicious. 00:02:32.41\00:02:35.25 We were told specifically masks had no value 00:02:35.28\00:02:38.42 when we had no mask. 00:02:38.45\00:02:39.99 Now that we have them, everyone wear them. 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.79 So people should be a little bit careful. 00:02:42.82\00:02:44.59 It's not particularly the US more than others. 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.36 Authorities tell the messages 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.46 what they think the message they'd hear. 00:02:49.50\00:02:52.30 And the Bible says this calls for wisdom, 00:02:52.33\00:02:55.00 we need to be wise as serpents, harmless as doves. 00:02:55.04\00:02:58.21 Don't believe everything you're told by every party. 00:02:58.24\00:03:01.58 But if you don't believe it, and if you don't do it... 00:03:01.61\00:03:06.18 Well, that's the bottom line. 00:03:06.21\00:03:07.95 And, you know, I have no burden, 00:03:07.98\00:03:10.85 never had a burden to encourage Christians 00:03:10.89\00:03:13.15 or any people of faith in testing any system 00:03:13.19\00:03:16.49 whether it's a relatively free democratic system, 00:03:16.52\00:03:19.89 like in the West or repressive like, 00:03:19.93\00:03:23.87 let's pick on someone is gone, Saddam Hussein's Iraq, 00:03:23.90\00:03:27.77 oppressive North Korea, very oppressive. 00:03:27.80\00:03:30.51 I don't think in any system people of faith 00:03:30.54\00:03:33.68 should test the system just to test it. 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.31 We're not called to be rebels, 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.31 but we're called to practice our faith in any situation. 00:03:38.35\00:03:42.65 And no matter what that system is, 00:03:42.68\00:03:45.89 if it's restricting our faith we push back against it. 00:03:45.92\00:03:48.82 It seems to me... 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.19 And more than that, which comes hard to Americans, 00:03:50.23\00:03:54.00 I think the Bible shows that there's always a cost. 00:03:54.03\00:03:57.37 You can't expect to do that 00:03:57.40\00:04:00.47 and for any system to hold you harmless. 00:04:00.50\00:04:04.41 Even in a democracy there might be fines, 00:04:04.44\00:04:06.84 there might even be imprisonment. 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.21 But if your faith holds, 00:04:08.24\00:04:10.15 with your faith that's important 00:04:10.18\00:04:11.51 you take the consequence. 00:04:11.55\00:04:13.08 But how do you go against that, as a church, 00:04:13.11\00:04:17.09 for the forsaking of the assembly of ourselves? 00:04:17.12\00:04:19.85 Amidst all this, 00:04:19.89\00:04:21.26 there's a pastor that did go against that, 00:04:21.29\00:04:23.99 and they were threatening him and throwing him in prison. 00:04:24.03\00:04:27.53 And without knowing that particular case, 00:04:27.56\00:04:30.77 I still think from a point of conscience, 00:04:30.80\00:04:34.00 that's admirable, 00:04:34.04\00:04:35.47 somebody that follows their conviction 00:04:35.50\00:04:38.14 has to be admired. 00:04:38.17\00:04:39.67 Is it admirable or rebellious? 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.61 Well, that's you need to decide on that individual, 00:04:42.64\00:04:45.18 it might be rebellious. 00:04:45.21\00:04:48.78 Paul's made it very plain 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.89 the authorities have legitimate control 00:04:50.92\00:04:52.75 in civil matters 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.12 and we're to obey them 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.09 when they wield the sword not in vain. 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.89 But if they're wielding the sword like... 00:04:58.93\00:05:03.33 What's his name? 00:05:03.37\00:05:04.70 Nero, who persecuted the Christians. 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.84 Clearly that was not something that Paul would be happy with. 00:05:06.87\00:05:09.87 Nero was persecuting. It was an evil sword. 00:05:09.90\00:05:14.24 So then that I guess the question I want to ask you 00:05:14.28\00:05:16.08 is social distancing, is that constitutional? 00:05:16.11\00:05:20.02 What if you don't? 00:05:20.05\00:05:21.38 Well, let me put it another way. 00:05:21.42\00:05:22.75 And this is a thought that I don't think very many... 00:05:22.78\00:05:25.05 I've not read anyone questioning it. 00:05:25.09\00:05:28.19 It's reasonable 00:05:28.22\00:05:29.56 from a public health point of view, 00:05:29.59\00:05:31.59 to chase down a virus 00:05:31.63\00:05:35.06 or pandemic or plague, whatever, 00:05:35.10\00:05:39.90 you know, the manifestation of this pestilence, 00:05:39.93\00:05:42.87 survival with that we used to. 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.14 Yes, if someone's got leprosy, 00:05:46.17\00:05:50.98 to go biblical, 00:05:51.01\00:05:53.85 the Old Testament was very plain on it, 00:05:53.88\00:05:55.35 they to be kept apart 00:05:55.38\00:05:56.72 because they were a threat to healthy people. 00:05:56.75\00:05:59.32 But what we've done which has almost no precedent 00:05:59.35\00:06:02.66 in any system, 00:06:02.69\00:06:04.69 particularly in the West is to restrict 00:06:04.73\00:06:06.96 the freedoms of healthy people because they might get sick. 00:06:07.00\00:06:12.67 That's bizarre. 00:06:12.70\00:06:14.04 I think that runs against all the norms 00:06:14.07\00:06:16.60 of civil and religious freedom. 00:06:16.64\00:06:20.68 But they say at the same time, governors are saying, 00:06:20.71\00:06:25.61 "You need to stay home, but it's okay to walk your dog. 00:06:25.65\00:06:28.78 It's okay to ride your bike." 00:06:28.82\00:06:30.15 Well, in practice, 00:06:30.19\00:06:32.45 I can only speak to the US which I've experienced. 00:06:32.49\00:06:34.52 In practice, it's not done in an onerous way. 00:06:34.56\00:06:39.79 I haven't seen anyone arrested. 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.63 And this is really my point. 00:06:42.66\00:06:45.73 Suggestions were put out 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.14 and most churches and faith groups just fell back 00:06:47.17\00:06:51.47 and just ceased operation instantly. 00:06:51.51\00:06:54.48 When there clearly was a middle ground 00:06:54.51\00:06:56.54 that they could have occupied 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.31 and without any sense of the authorities 00:06:58.35\00:07:01.42 wanting to persecute Christians, 00:07:01.45\00:07:03.02 I think they would have been fine 00:07:03.05\00:07:04.82 but instead they just shut down. 00:07:04.85\00:07:08.69 And the one area... 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.06 And this has been mentioned 00:07:10.09\00:07:11.76 in an article of Liberty already. 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.46 The one area that's a little ambiguous, 00:07:13.50\00:07:16.06 one state they even forbade drive thru church assembly. 00:07:16.10\00:07:21.10 Now, I thought about that a lot of times, 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.94 I can't see any rationale that that's a health threat, 00:07:23.97\00:07:27.04 none whatsoever, 00:07:27.08\00:07:29.14 to have a whole bunch of people sitting in their cars 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.25 in the open area, in the open air, 00:07:31.28\00:07:34.58 either watching a screen or listening on the radio 00:07:34.62\00:07:37.25 to some, you know, group broadcast 00:07:37.29\00:07:39.92 that it's affected sort of a halfway house 00:07:39.95\00:07:42.12 from Zoom and other things. 00:07:42.16\00:07:43.76 But there's a lot of stuff that's been going on 00:07:43.79\00:07:46.06 that they have. 00:07:46.09\00:07:47.50 I don't know who does this. 00:07:47.53\00:07:48.86 They sit in their office and a bunch of them say, 00:07:48.90\00:07:51.23 "What can we do to make it difficult for people?" 00:07:51.27\00:07:53.37 And just make it so stupid, 00:07:53.40\00:07:55.60 because they showed a park that had bathrooms, 00:07:55.64\00:07:58.54 but the bathroom said it was clearly locked, 00:07:58.57\00:08:00.68 please because for COVID-19 we're just trying to keep safe, 00:08:00.71\00:08:04.71 but please be free to use 00:08:04.75\00:08:06.08 the porta potties in front of them. 00:08:06.11\00:08:08.32 How does that work? 00:08:08.35\00:08:09.68 Well, a lot of its illogical 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.05 because we're dealing with a panic. 00:08:11.09\00:08:12.42 I understand that. 00:08:12.45\00:08:13.79 And the panic is not just with the population, 00:08:13.82\00:08:16.09 a lot of public officials are panicked. 00:08:16.12\00:08:18.29 And with some cause... 00:08:18.33\00:08:19.66 I still remember early on, 00:08:19.69\00:08:24.13 seeing the foreign news media and the health minister, 00:08:24.17\00:08:26.77 I think it was in Iran, was on television, 00:08:26.80\00:08:29.07 telling people not to worry, and he's wiping his brow. 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.97 He died a couple of days later from COVID. 00:08:32.01\00:08:35.91 They clearly have 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.28 a more pernicious form of it in Iran, 00:08:37.31\00:08:39.61 and, you know, there's pictures of mass graves 00:08:39.65\00:08:41.42 and so on. 00:08:41.45\00:08:42.92 But obviously those officials they should have been panicked. 00:08:42.95\00:08:47.56 And in England, 00:08:47.59\00:08:49.19 we had Boris Johnson treated nice, elated. 00:08:49.22\00:08:53.63 He said, "You know, the risk is there." 00:08:53.66\00:08:56.16 I know President Trump doesn't seem to care, 00:08:56.20\00:08:58.33 no masking. 00:08:58.37\00:08:59.90 He's very lucky. 00:08:59.93\00:09:01.70 But there are reasons even for officials to worry, 00:09:01.74\00:09:05.24 but just looked at it 00:09:05.27\00:09:07.21 structurally and I think this is a thinking point 00:09:07.24\00:09:09.48 for this program or for all around the world, 00:09:09.51\00:09:11.38 I hope people at least think about it. 00:09:11.41\00:09:13.82 Social distancing makes a certain sense. 00:09:13.85\00:09:17.59 And, of course, we're doing it now, 00:09:17.62\00:09:19.29 for practical reason. 00:09:19.32\00:09:20.66 Yeah. Right. 00:09:20.69\00:09:22.02 For sure. 00:09:22.06\00:09:23.39 It's not wrong, it makes good public health sense. 00:09:23.43\00:09:24.96 But taken to a limit, 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.03 it will tend to break down the social glue 00:09:27.06\00:09:32.00 that makes the whole world work. 00:09:32.03\00:09:35.97 Even a democracy needs, 00:09:36.00\00:09:38.24 I alluded to earlier as the social contract, 00:09:38.27\00:09:40.48 an agreement 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.04 that you will abide by the rules, 00:09:42.08\00:09:44.11 you will react this way with your fellows 00:09:44.15\00:09:46.01 because you respect other human beings. 00:09:46.05\00:09:48.05 Once we become only autonomous islands 00:09:48.08\00:09:53.05 of existence 00:09:53.09\00:09:54.42 and we don't see the same way 00:09:54.46\00:09:56.46 other human beings the same way, 00:09:56.49\00:09:58.19 things start to fall apart. 00:09:58.23\00:10:00.06 To use, you know, poem by William Bentley, 00:10:00.10\00:10:04.70 it's the second coming. 00:10:04.73\00:10:06.07 He says, "If the center cannot hold, 00:10:06.10\00:10:07.44 things fall apart." 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.77 And over the years I've read many, many things, 00:10:09.80\00:10:13.44 especially, from repressive governments. 00:10:13.48\00:10:14.91 I remember reading Solzhenitsyn's writings 00:10:14.94\00:10:18.18 from Soviet Russia. 00:10:18.21\00:10:20.92 And he described social distancing 00:10:20.95\00:10:24.35 the sense of social isolation 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.69 that was engendered in the dissidents, the idea, 00:10:26.72\00:10:30.79 not just an idea but how they were kept apart, 00:10:30.83\00:10:33.86 they were even sent the Siberian 00:10:33.90\00:10:36.46 and sometimes isolation in a cell for months on. 00:10:36.50\00:10:41.14 This was all designed to give you a sense 00:10:41.17\00:10:43.10 that you have no other support. 00:10:43.14\00:10:45.87 You are simply by yourself. 00:10:45.91\00:10:47.98 And here there's this massive power structure 00:10:48.01\00:10:50.01 that you don't dare challenge. 00:10:50.05\00:10:51.71 And I really believe 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.08 that we're going through advertently or inadvertently 00:10:53.11\00:10:56.69 the makeup of what we're going through 00:10:56.72\00:10:58.49 the process that sets us up for the same, sort of, 00:10:58.52\00:11:01.86 centralized control and inhibition of freedoms 00:11:01.89\00:11:05.43 that we've seen 00:11:05.46\00:11:06.80 in some of these most repressive places. 00:11:06.83\00:11:08.60 And that word control is very critical word. 00:11:08.63\00:11:12.10 Let me read you a quote that the Governor Newsom 00:11:12.13\00:11:14.90 from California said, 00:11:14.94\00:11:16.47 at the beginning of all this COVID stuff, 00:11:16.50\00:11:18.01 he says, "People will self-regulate 00:11:18.04\00:11:19.87 their behavior. 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.24 They'll begin to adjust and adapt. 00:11:21.28\00:11:23.08 We will have social pressure 00:11:23.11\00:11:24.81 that will encourage people to do the right thing." 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.52 Yeah, I'm sure the governor didn't really have a sinister 00:11:27.55\00:11:30.35 under meaning to that. 00:11:30.39\00:11:31.75 But when you just take it at face value, 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.82 the implication is very plain. 00:11:33.86\00:11:35.86 There's an inhibition of freedom 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.09 and the right of the individual. 00:11:38.13\00:11:40.26 And will that bring 00:11:40.30\00:11:42.06 about something in the future for us? 00:11:42.10\00:11:43.57 I think so. 00:11:43.60\00:11:44.93 I think rulers and citizens, 00:11:44.97\00:11:48.07 I don't think there's a bad guy in this 00:11:48.10\00:11:49.64 but we're all sort of in a flow 00:11:49.67\00:11:51.61 that is tending to redefine rights, freedoms, 00:11:51.64\00:11:56.31 and the role of the individual versus an authority, 00:11:56.34\00:12:00.12 figure out group. 00:12:00.15\00:12:02.08 And for us today, I mean, we have to decide. 00:12:02.12\00:12:05.25 For me it's troubling when I read that, 00:12:05.29\00:12:07.62 and I started seeing what was going on, 00:12:07.66\00:12:10.99 they actually have I mean, 00:12:11.03\00:12:12.76 you look at the latest iPhone update, 00:12:12.79\00:12:15.20 they can report things through that 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.23 where your location is, all those things. 00:12:17.27\00:12:19.10 You're getting into another thing. 00:12:19.13\00:12:20.47 We need to have a program on that 00:12:20.50\00:12:21.84 because I do believe 00:12:21.87\00:12:23.20 and I've mentioned before that 00:12:23.24\00:12:24.57 technology have sort of handed the mechanism 00:12:24.61\00:12:26.61 to any authority group to control and to persecute 00:12:26.64\00:12:31.25 and devil gets the individual. 00:12:31.28\00:12:34.62 But it's a brave new world, isn't it, to borrow from, 00:12:34.65\00:12:38.19 a famous piece of work? 00:12:38.22\00:12:39.55 It is, but my concern still is 00:12:39.59\00:12:41.39 when you're looking at this whole thing, 00:12:41.42\00:12:43.26 and what they're saying 00:12:43.29\00:12:44.63 and having the people monitor you, 00:12:44.66\00:12:47.90 it's almost like the people 00:12:47.93\00:12:50.03 become the new police system to be able to say. 00:12:50.07\00:12:53.27 We'll have the people that are going to tell us 00:12:53.30\00:12:56.27 who's complying and who's not. 00:12:56.30\00:12:57.64 Which has horrible shades of the Communist Bloc Group 00:12:57.67\00:13:01.21 where you as citizens reporting on other citizens. 00:13:01.24\00:13:03.65 We need to fight that. Yeah. 00:13:03.68\00:13:05.15 But today right now for us, 00:13:05.18\00:13:06.98 what we have to do is 00:13:07.02\00:13:08.35 we have to figure out where we're going to be going. 00:13:08.38\00:13:11.85 And as a people, are we going to fight? 00:13:11.89\00:13:16.59 I guess for me, I look at all this 00:13:16.62\00:13:18.63 and I have some concerns that this is where all things 00:13:18.66\00:13:21.70 are going right now today in our world. 00:13:21.73\00:13:27.14 In the middle of a crowd, 00:13:27.17\00:13:28.50 it's often very hard to notice the individual. 00:13:28.54\00:13:33.04 Of course, in this COVID-19 era, 00:13:33.07\00:13:37.15 a crowd is a very relative thing. 00:13:37.18\00:13:38.98 Six foot apart takes a lot of space to make a crowd. 00:13:39.01\00:13:45.12 But I read in the Bible 00:13:45.15\00:13:46.49 that in the midst of a great crowd, 00:13:46.52\00:13:48.52 the press of the crowd, 00:13:48.56\00:13:50.56 Jesus felt somebody touched the hem of His garment, 00:13:50.59\00:13:54.16 a woman that needed healing 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.33 and received it by touching Him. 00:13:56.36\00:13:58.90 Somehow we Christians, 00:13:58.93\00:14:01.27 we people of faith in a time of COVID-19, 00:14:01.30\00:14:04.64 social distancing, 00:14:04.67\00:14:06.47 still need to realize 00:14:06.51\00:14:08.28 that there is the touch toward the master, 00:14:08.31\00:14:11.81 toward a spiritual power beyond this necessary, 00:14:11.85\00:14:15.12 obligatory, and that social distancing, 00:14:15.15\00:14:17.92 while in a civil sense may create a passive populace, 00:14:17.95\00:14:23.73 may soften us up for abuses from the powers here 00:14:23.76\00:14:29.13 that are above us, 00:14:29.16\00:14:30.50 that ultimately we do need 00:14:30.53\00:14:32.53 a touch and a contact with the divine. 00:14:32.57\00:14:36.64 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:14:36.67\00:14:39.97
