Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 This is Lincoln Steed with guest Amireh Al Haddad 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.40 and the hot topic, 00:00:06.43\00:00:08.64 where probably, 00:00:08.67\00:00:10.01 the switchboards are gonna light up 00:00:10.04\00:00:11.37 like crazy when this goes lo. 00:00:11.41\00:00:13.14 No, I hope so, but not with antagonism. 00:00:13.17\00:00:15.41 I hope there's agreement, 00:00:15.44\00:00:18.31 at least with our general position, 00:00:18.35\00:00:19.71 there's serious issues 00:00:19.75\00:00:21.08 and we need to have some more than tolerance. 00:00:21.12\00:00:24.05 We need to have understanding, clarification. 00:00:24.09\00:00:27.32 And with Christians a little priority setting 00:00:27.36\00:00:29.92 that this is the here and now, but we set for another kingdom, 00:00:29.96\00:00:32.89 but we have to be 00:00:32.93\00:00:34.26 responsible citizens of this one. 00:00:34.30\00:00:36.00 And talking about another kingdom, 00:00:36.03\00:00:38.17 you know, when our church was being formed in the 1860s, 00:00:38.20\00:00:42.97 we were in the middle of a civil war. 00:00:43.00\00:00:44.97 And whose side are you gonna support? 00:00:45.01\00:00:49.14 How do you receive tithes and offerings 00:00:49.18\00:00:52.35 in Confederate money? 00:00:52.38\00:00:54.42 You know, we're trying to organize 00:00:54.45\00:00:57.15 the church in the middle of a civil war. 00:00:57.19\00:01:00.46 I've often spoken about this dynamic, 00:01:00.49\00:01:03.12 but I'd never thought 00:01:03.16\00:01:04.49 what happened to the Confederate money 00:01:04.53\00:01:05.86 that the church must have gotten 00:01:05.89\00:01:07.23 at some point with antagonist. 00:01:07.26\00:01:08.66 How do you manage it when you're one country, 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.10 but you've got two monetary systems going on? 00:01:11.13\00:01:14.60 And they clearly had views on it. 00:01:14.64\00:01:16.20 I mean, Ellen White 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.07 wrote very plainly that God's... 00:01:18.11\00:01:19.81 She says, "God's punishment rested on the south 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.18 for its embrace of slavery." 00:01:22.21\00:01:23.55 That's a pretty damning statement. 00:01:23.58\00:01:24.95 It is. 00:01:24.98\00:01:26.31 And yet at the same time, 00:01:26.35\00:01:27.78 to me, it's always very significant. 00:01:27.82\00:01:29.25 That's precisely the moment the church developed 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.52 its non-combatancy stance. 00:01:31.55\00:01:32.92 It is. 00:01:32.95\00:01:34.29 So they clearly made the super clear decision 00:01:34.32\00:01:37.49 to stay out of the political fray. 00:01:37.53\00:01:39.26 Well, they believe that the United States 00:01:39.29\00:01:41.70 was Babylon or would be. 00:01:41.73\00:01:45.53 Had become. It had become Babylon. 00:01:45.57\00:01:47.80 Isn't that strike you. Yes. 00:01:47.84\00:01:49.17 And, you know, it does shape the way 00:01:49.20\00:01:53.07 you interact with your government. 00:01:53.11\00:01:57.05 You know, we were coming from a position 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.45 where Liberty Insider is just really dealing with US 00:01:59.48\00:02:03.79 a little bit of Canada sometimes, but... 00:02:03.82\00:02:06.42 Well, then I get onto other topics... 00:02:06.45\00:02:08.79 Into other topics so... 00:02:08.82\00:02:10.76 I didn't wanna take you to the Middle East. 00:02:10.79\00:02:12.26 Remember... I know, I know. 00:02:12.29\00:02:14.03 I didn't wanna go to different places today, 00:02:14.06\00:02:18.27 but we have had a history 00:02:18.30\00:02:21.87 where there have been members 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.61 who felt like 00:02:23.64\00:02:24.97 they were gonna abstain from voting 00:02:25.01\00:02:26.98 because of the conflict 00:02:27.01\00:02:29.51 that they felt brought upon them by voting, 00:02:29.54\00:02:34.35 you know, and then 00:02:34.38\00:02:35.75 there was another time when Ellen G. White 00:02:35.78\00:02:39.35 wrote about the fact 00:02:39.39\00:02:40.72 that it was incumbent upon us to vote 00:02:40.76\00:02:43.83 as she was particularly talking about temperance. 00:02:43.86\00:02:47.33 You grew up with temperance in your household. 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.50 Yeah. 00:02:49.53\00:02:50.87 My father was the temperance directive, 00:02:50.90\00:02:52.23 and he lived and breathed that. 00:02:52.27\00:02:53.87 And I've read the book Temperance a few times, 00:02:53.90\00:02:56.17 which is a compilation bit of statements 00:02:56.20\00:02:59.67 that Ellen White made on the temperance topic. 00:02:59.71\00:03:01.54 Now she said it was such an important topic, 00:03:01.58\00:03:03.88 if need be vote on the Sabbath. 00:03:03.91\00:03:05.38 Yes. 00:03:05.41\00:03:06.75 Which you're gonna really think that one through 00:03:06.78\00:03:09.35 with Seventh-day Adventists. 00:03:09.38\00:03:10.75 And we keep the Sabbath very holy. 00:03:10.79\00:03:12.29 And you spend a lot of your time 00:03:12.32\00:03:14.76 seeking exemptions in the workplace 00:03:14.79\00:03:17.16 for Adventists who can't work, 00:03:17.19\00:03:19.16 can't do secular activities, 00:03:19.19\00:03:20.53 but she saw 00:03:20.56\00:03:21.90 this is a very high moral cause. 00:03:21.93\00:03:23.53 And as Jesus pointed out, you do good on the Sabbath, 00:03:23.57\00:03:26.03 that's a calling. 00:03:26.07\00:03:28.10 It's not the time to go into hibernation, 00:03:28.14\00:03:31.07 although some people do this risk. 00:03:31.11\00:03:32.74 What does it, lay activities? 00:03:32.77\00:03:34.11 Yeah. Yeah. 00:03:34.14\00:03:35.48 There was one very particular time 00:03:35.51\00:03:37.25 when there was a meritorial vote 00:03:37.28\00:03:40.15 in Battle Creek. 00:03:40.18\00:03:42.78 And the Battle Creek mayor 00:03:42.82\00:03:44.89 was seen to have been this very disreputable, 00:03:44.92\00:03:47.72 womanizer, drunk, 00:03:47.76\00:03:49.72 you know, and he was sure he was gonna get back in 00:03:49.76\00:03:52.89 because Election Day was on Sabbath. 00:03:52.93\00:03:56.03 And Ellen White said, 00:03:56.06\00:03:58.30 "You need to go and vote this man out, 00:03:58.33\00:04:00.30 even on the Sabbath day." 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.30 He was sure he was gonna get back in 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.37 because he knew Adventist would not go 00:04:04.41\00:04:06.24 vote on Sabbath. 00:04:06.27\00:04:08.54 You know, of course, I say... 00:04:08.58\00:04:09.91 It happens, but it gets into a gray area 00:04:09.94\00:04:11.58 because the Moral Majority as they came to power, 00:04:11.61\00:04:15.38 I think one of the worst aspects 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.25 of their growing political involvement 00:04:17.29\00:04:18.92 was these voter lists picking, 00:04:18.95\00:04:21.66 having targets to defeat politically or electorally 00:04:21.69\00:04:26.36 because of their views on abortion usually. 00:04:26.39\00:04:30.10 And, you know, I don't think 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.43 it's a problem with Adventists and most Christians, 00:04:32.47\00:04:34.74 we see abortion and other modern... 00:04:34.77\00:04:38.61 How could I characterize them, 00:04:38.64\00:04:39.97 other modern light-hearted looks at life 00:04:40.01\00:04:42.61 and the seriousness of God's creation? 00:04:42.64\00:04:44.95 You know, is not good, 00:04:44.98\00:04:46.75 but to be one notice 00:04:46.78\00:04:48.62 and to be so militant politically 00:04:48.65\00:04:51.69 that you'll tear them down at any cost 00:04:51.72\00:04:53.52 even voting on Sabbath 00:04:53.56\00:04:55.39 makes me a little uncomfortable. 00:04:55.42\00:04:57.16 Well, and luckily we also say, 00:04:57.19\00:05:01.90 just because someone else tells you to do it, 00:05:01.93\00:05:03.70 doesn't mean that you have to violate 00:05:03.73\00:05:05.07 your conscience. 00:05:05.10\00:05:06.43 Right. 00:05:06.47\00:05:07.80 And as you know, 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.17 our religious liberty department 00:05:09.20\00:05:10.54 and our church has never directed 00:05:10.57\00:05:11.91 voters generally. 00:05:11.94\00:05:13.27 I know there was a comment of Ellen White, 00:05:13.31\00:05:14.64 but she was not church dictator. 00:05:14.68\00:05:16.01 No! Not at all. 00:05:16.04\00:05:17.38 She was a spiritual voice advisor, 00:05:17.41\00:05:18.75 and one of the pioneers. 00:05:18.78\00:05:21.15 No, I think it's a safe course. 00:05:21.18\00:05:24.92 It's a moral course, it's a list of New Testament, 00:05:24.95\00:05:28.76 biblically defensible course, 00:05:28.79\00:05:30.56 that the church is not in politics directly 00:05:30.59\00:05:33.73 and not pushing the members to any particular viewpoint. 00:05:33.76\00:05:36.56 And we've had this back and forth 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.13 where we say not to vote, 00:05:38.17\00:05:39.63 then go vote on Sabbath back and forth. 00:05:39.67\00:05:42.07 And so what happened was, 00:05:42.10\00:05:44.21 finally we kind of got together and we said, 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.78 "Look, we need to understand that we can't prove or disprove 00:05:46.81\00:05:51.35 whether a Christian should vote or not vote 00:05:51.38\00:05:53.58 on the Bible." 00:05:53.62\00:05:54.95 And because you can't prove it 00:05:54.98\00:05:56.32 in the Bible or disprove it in the Bible, 00:05:56.35\00:05:58.35 we're gonna tell people 00:05:58.39\00:05:59.82 we leave this to each individual to do. 00:05:59.85\00:06:03.49 And, you know, in some things like this 00:06:03.53\00:06:05.39 are clearly not moral or immoral in themselves. 00:06:05.43\00:06:09.23 It's how you go about that activity. 00:06:09.26\00:06:11.33 And that's a matter of conscience 00:06:11.37\00:06:12.70 and we'll stand before God 00:06:12.73\00:06:14.07 and I know it seems crazy to some, but you could, 00:06:14.10\00:06:18.11 two people could almost do the same thing 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.18 and one could be condemned by God 00:06:20.21\00:06:21.54 and their conscience 00:06:21.58\00:06:22.91 and the other person God could say there, 00:06:22.94\00:06:25.15 like indicative of David, 00:06:25.18\00:06:27.18 a man after my heart or a woman after my own heart, 00:06:27.22\00:06:30.02 so at the end of the day, it's a heart response, 00:06:30.05\00:06:33.39 but we enter into enchanted ground, 00:06:33.42\00:06:36.26 I think by becoming 00:06:36.29\00:06:38.09 politically motivated as Christians 00:06:38.13\00:06:41.13 at the expense of our Christian identity 00:06:41.16\00:06:43.37 and our Christian aspirations. 00:06:43.40\00:06:45.47 True. 00:06:45.50\00:06:46.84 And when we look at it overall, 00:06:46.87\00:06:50.31 what we really need to understand is 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.81 that from our perspective, 00:06:52.84\00:06:55.01 we need to remember that it doesn't matter 00:06:55.04\00:06:57.31 if you're a republican or a democrat. 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.31 What you should tell people when they say, "What are you?" 00:06:59.35\00:07:03.75 You should say, "I'm a Christian." 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.99 If we identified more as being a Christian, 00:07:06.02\00:07:08.86 rather than a political party, 00:07:08.89\00:07:10.83 I think that we would be so much further along. 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.96 And... 00:07:14.00\00:07:15.36 I agree with you. Contentment and understanding. 00:07:15.40\00:07:17.90 You know, he's become a bit of a leper at the moment, 00:07:17.93\00:07:19.70 but Mitt Romney's speech, 00:07:19.73\00:07:21.07 and you could argue 00:07:21.10\00:07:22.44 whether or not he should have voted 00:07:22.47\00:07:23.81 the way he did, 00:07:23.84\00:07:25.17 but as a human being and a person of faith, 00:07:25.21\00:07:26.54 I appreciated the way that he laid out the fact 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.94 that he was acting 00:07:28.98\00:07:30.41 on his conscience as a Christian. 00:07:30.45\00:07:32.65 Yeah. 00:07:32.68\00:07:34.72 Not be wrong, but I mean, about how he acted, 00:07:34.75\00:07:37.72 but I saw conscience of work there, 00:07:37.75\00:07:40.26 he was thinking deeply 00:07:40.29\00:07:41.62 and so each Christian should do that, 00:07:41.66\00:07:42.99 don't you think? 00:07:43.02\00:07:44.36 Definitely. 00:07:44.39\00:07:45.73 If each and every one of us were to act 00:07:45.76\00:07:47.26 on our own conscience 00:07:47.30\00:07:48.63 and our own understanding of the Bible, 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.63 then we would probably all be a lot better off, 00:07:51.67\00:07:54.84 but the problem comes 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.37 when we decide that we're gonna form ourselves 00:07:56.40\00:08:00.61 or connect ourselves with people 00:08:00.64\00:08:02.81 that are based on a political party system 00:08:02.84\00:08:06.05 rather than the system of God and Jesus' kingdom in heaven. 00:08:06.08\00:08:11.29 So always keep in mind. 00:08:11.32\00:08:13.69 Voting in the Old Testament 00:08:16.69\00:08:18.49 was a little bit different affair 00:08:18.53\00:08:20.10 than in the modern voting booth 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.60 and the numbers and the parties 00:08:22.63\00:08:24.73 and the precincts and so on. 00:08:24.77\00:08:27.34 I can remember reading with interest 00:08:27.37\00:08:30.04 when Saul was voted king of Israel 00:08:30.07\00:08:35.54 against God's wishes and the prophets' wishes. 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.55 And yet curiously, he was the one chosen. 00:08:38.58\00:08:42.55 It is a mistake, I think, 00:08:42.58\00:08:43.92 in our modern system 00:08:43.95\00:08:45.95 to imagine that any elected leader 00:08:45.99\00:08:48.02 is automatically one chosen by God, 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.06 but it's also a mistake to think 00:08:51.09\00:08:53.80 that to stand back 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.53 and to allow a democratic society 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.77 to choose its leaders 00:08:58.80\00:09:00.44 without any input from Christian sensibility 00:09:00.47\00:09:04.04 is an ideal thing. 00:09:04.07\00:09:05.41 The Christians are to be light and salt, 00:09:05.44\00:09:10.25 and any number of figures that show 00:09:10.28\00:09:12.31 that they influence the society they live in. 00:09:12.35\00:09:15.45 And to be the best of citizens, 00:09:15.48\00:09:17.75 even as in everything about their life 00:09:17.79\00:09:21.02 and comportment they show 00:09:21.06\00:09:22.39 that they are citizens of a far kingdom, 00:09:22.42\00:09:24.63 a coming kingdom, 00:09:24.66\00:09:25.99 God's eternal kingdom of grace 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.96 that is promised to each of us. 00:09:29.00\00:09:32.73 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:09:32.77\00:09:35.54
