Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.83 With guest Amireh Al Haddad, 00:00:02.86\00:00:04.60 we were into the one of the thorniest issues, 00:00:04.63\00:00:07.64 even though it's gone into a hiatus for a while now, 00:00:07.67\00:00:11.57 it's zooming again, the issue of vouchers. 00:00:11.61\00:00:14.64 And there's a lot of players, isn't there? 00:00:14.68\00:00:17.35 And ironically, while for us in the area, 00:00:17.38\00:00:21.25 the issue seems clear cut, many churches, 00:00:21.28\00:00:23.65 even including our own, like the money, 00:00:23.69\00:00:26.59 and there's a lot of rationalizations 00:00:26.62\00:00:29.22 that play that mean, 00:00:29.26\00:00:31.33 the money's accepted, and compromises are made. 00:00:31.36\00:00:34.96 It's a sad commentary, but it's true. 00:00:35.00\00:00:39.30 That while we always say don't take the money, 00:00:39.33\00:00:44.44 we are always standing in line 00:00:44.47\00:00:46.71 when they hand it out. 00:00:46.74\00:00:48.08 Yeah. 00:00:48.11\00:00:49.44 And I think that this will work 00:00:49.48\00:00:53.35 in a negative way for churches. 00:00:53.38\00:00:57.09 We're already seeing some 00:00:57.12\00:00:59.42 of the negativity that's happening 00:00:59.45\00:01:02.36 because there is a very strong segment 00:01:02.39\00:01:07.33 of the LGBTQ community who are saying, 00:01:07.36\00:01:10.93 "Well, if you've taken government money, 00:01:10.97\00:01:13.23 then why won't you hire me?" 00:01:13.27\00:01:15.80 And yeah, as you know, 00:01:15.84\00:01:18.14 one case that sticks in my mind, 00:01:18.17\00:01:20.68 it says in a table, 00:01:20.71\00:01:22.28 the case involving Lutheran School, wasn't it? 00:01:22.31\00:01:25.21 It came up to the Supreme Court, 00:01:25.25\00:01:26.58 and they reaffirm soundly that in a church-run operation, 00:01:26.61\00:01:31.09 in essence, the church can discriminate, 00:01:31.12\00:01:32.79 but that's a horrible way to project 00:01:32.82\00:01:36.19 that to non-church members. 00:01:36.22\00:01:37.99 The idea here this church is discriminating, 00:01:38.03\00:01:40.40 but at least they're standing by their guns, 00:01:40.43\00:01:42.60 but I think it's a red flag to groups like the gay lobby 00:01:42.63\00:01:46.67 when they see the monies being taken. 00:01:46.70\00:01:50.31 And then they're using different legal 00:01:50.34\00:01:52.77 and social ways to force the church to, 00:01:52.81\00:01:57.51 in essence, compromise its moral 00:01:57.55\00:01:59.81 position but it's coming. 00:01:59.85\00:02:01.85 And I know in California, our religious liberty director 00:02:01.88\00:02:05.22 there was very fearful about the time 00:02:05.25\00:02:08.09 the Trump administration started 00:02:08.12\00:02:09.66 which put the end to it, I believe, 00:02:09.69\00:02:11.93 but in the state, there was a suggestion that 00:02:11.96\00:02:14.46 schools that were taking government money 00:02:14.50\00:02:16.13 might have to provide a gay married housing, 00:02:16.16\00:02:19.17 hire not able to fire gays and so on. 00:02:19.20\00:02:22.20 You know, and then they were the respect in a civil society. 00:02:22.24\00:02:24.87 But why should the church 00:02:24.91\00:02:26.24 with the clear moral position be so compromised that 00:02:26.27\00:02:29.41 it would have to bring in everything 00:02:29.44\00:02:32.25 that the world involved? 00:02:32.28\00:02:33.62 It's sort of the same idea, 00:02:33.65\00:02:34.98 I remember there's another infamous case, 00:02:35.02\00:02:36.58 I'm trying to think where 00:02:36.62\00:02:37.95 but there was a Christian legal society 00:02:37.99\00:02:41.19 at some big school, 00:02:41.22\00:02:44.39 that got caught up in a discrimination issue, 00:02:44.43\00:02:47.10 and in the end, 00:02:47.13\00:02:48.46 they were required to open it to non-Christians. 00:02:48.50\00:02:50.57 Right. 00:02:50.60\00:02:51.93 So that they have a meeting 00:02:51.97\00:02:53.30 with the Christian legal society, 00:02:53.34\00:02:54.67 and it's made up of people that are anti-Christian. 00:02:54.70\00:02:57.27 You can't have... 00:02:57.31\00:02:58.64 By definition, an organization ceases to be 00:02:58.67\00:03:01.61 when its distinction is automatically gone through 00:03:01.64\00:03:05.21 its members. 00:03:05.25\00:03:06.58 I consider myself to be very conservative religiously. 00:03:06.61\00:03:10.29 And because of my conservativeness 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.96 I have a profound yearning 00:03:13.99\00:03:19.49 to continue my churches, 00:03:19.53\00:03:22.76 beliefs, and educate the young people 00:03:22.80\00:03:25.77 within my churches, according to our beliefs. 00:03:25.80\00:03:29.90 And because of that, 00:03:29.94\00:03:32.07 I feel like if we want to do what we do best, 00:03:32.11\00:03:37.78 which is educate Seventh-day Adventist young people 00:03:37.81\00:03:40.75 to be Seventh-day Adventist, 00:03:40.78\00:03:43.22 then we need to do it without the aid of government. 00:03:43.25\00:03:46.35 And if it doesn't deserve our money and our giving, 00:03:46.39\00:03:51.46 then why should the government support 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.33 something that we ourselves can't do it? 00:03:54.36\00:03:56.77 This is clear away of putting 00:03:56.80\00:03:58.70 it as I've ever seen or ever heard. 00:03:58.73\00:04:00.07 And to me, 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.60 if you don't support it yourself, 00:04:01.64\00:04:05.94 then that's a clear indication that 00:04:05.97\00:04:09.11 why should the government support 00:04:09.14\00:04:10.48 it on your behalf. 00:04:10.51\00:04:11.85 We say in my territory, in my office, 00:04:11.88\00:04:14.78 what we say when we talk against vouchers 00:04:14.82\00:04:17.25 because we don't like vouchers, 00:04:17.29\00:04:18.75 and we don't like our churches to take the vouchers... 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.12 Well, that's religious department 00:04:20.16\00:04:21.76 has been very consistent... 00:04:21.79\00:04:23.12 Yes. 00:04:23.16\00:04:24.49 For about 130 years plus on warning 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.66 against taking not that vouchers 00:04:27.70\00:04:29.66 as a new deal but, you know, state monies. 00:04:29.70\00:04:32.47 And we continue to be consistent, 00:04:32.50\00:04:34.17 but we consistently say don't take church money 00:04:34.20\00:04:37.11 and then anytime it's offered, 00:04:37.14\00:04:39.04 the church consistently takes it. 00:04:39.07\00:04:40.91 Yes. 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.28 And so what I tell people is that you have to remember, 00:04:42.31\00:04:46.68 there are no government shekels without government shackles. 00:04:46.72\00:04:51.19 And you take... 00:04:51.22\00:04:52.79 No shekels without shackles. You take the shekels. 00:04:52.82\00:04:55.36 You also accept the shackles. 00:04:55.39\00:04:56.73 Can you make the rhyme with dollar? 00:04:56.76\00:04:58.09 Yeah, I can't make it rhyme with dollar bill. 00:04:58.13\00:05:00.30 If you take the government's money... 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.30 If you take the government's dollar 00:05:02.33\00:05:04.40 and then they take it back down holler... 00:05:04.43\00:05:08.04 It was something like that. Yeah, right. 00:05:08.07\00:05:09.40 Yeah. I'm not good poet. 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.77 And if they limit, you do not follow. 00:05:10.81\00:05:12.14 At least not on dough roll. Yeah. 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.48 You take the dollar don't holler. 00:05:14.51\00:05:15.84 Yeah. That's right. Yeah. There you go. 00:05:15.88\00:05:17.21 Take the dollar don't holler. 00:05:17.25\00:05:18.58 So, you know, we do need to understand 00:05:18.61\00:05:23.89 that in order to be true to ourselves 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.25 and to our beliefs, 00:05:26.29\00:05:27.62 we need to find our own missions. 00:05:27.66\00:05:30.43 And if you don't believe 00:05:30.46\00:05:31.86 that Adventist education is a mission... 00:05:31.89\00:05:35.36 Or any church-run... Any church trying to take. 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.83 Yes. 00:05:37.87\00:05:39.20 But the same dynamic applies to any group, I'm sure. 00:05:39.23\00:05:41.74 Yes. 00:05:41.77\00:05:43.10 I think I've mentioned it on this program, 00:05:43.14\00:05:45.01 but this is a good time to reiterate it. 00:05:45.04\00:05:46.68 I remember being very impressed 00:05:46.71\00:05:48.54 by this dynamic or this dynamic at play. 00:05:48.58\00:05:51.81 When I heard about the Newfoundland Conference 00:05:51.85\00:05:54.68 of Seventh-day Adventists, very little. 00:05:54.72\00:05:56.05 Yes. 00:05:56.08\00:05:57.42 It's actually where I was ordained, 00:05:57.45\00:05:58.79 there's only about 900 members 00:05:58.82\00:06:00.16 From the 1990s this is the case. 00:06:00.19\00:06:01.52 Yes. 00:06:01.56\00:06:02.89 Well, it's the case of the school situation. 00:06:02.92\00:06:05.19 But very small, not a wealthy area. 00:06:05.23\00:06:09.53 I mean, the people aren't desperately poor, 00:06:09.56\00:06:11.13 but it's not a rich conference. 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.50 Not many members. 00:06:12.53\00:06:14.50 But they had I think three schools 00:06:14.54\00:06:17.14 that they had supported by the membership 00:06:17.17\00:06:19.84 and have been running for a number of years, 00:06:19.87\00:06:22.44 very successfully and sacrificial support. 00:06:22.48\00:06:26.21 And then the laws passed in Canada 00:06:26.25\00:06:28.48 where the state started largely funding those schools, 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.75 which was, you know, 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.12 answer to some people's prayers. 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.49 So everything was hunky-dory for a while, 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.26 then the laws passed again, 00:06:37.29\00:06:38.63 the money was withdrawn, and the school shut. 00:06:38.66\00:06:42.50 They clearly had the ability and the dedication on their own 00:06:42.53\00:06:45.97 but once the money came in, it corrupted it. 00:06:46.00\00:06:48.10 And I remember very plainly 00:06:48.14\00:06:50.51 when George Bush Jr. became president 00:06:50.54\00:06:54.08 remember his faith-based initiative? 00:06:54.11\00:06:55.44 Yes. 00:06:55.48\00:06:56.81 The whole argument was that the churches 00:06:56.85\00:06:58.81 were doing a great deal. 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.32 So the government could take welfare monies 00:07:00.35\00:07:03.79 and process it through the churches 00:07:03.82\00:07:05.49 and get more bang for the buck. 00:07:05.52\00:07:07.82 When they did it, the church giving dropped overall 00:07:07.86\00:07:11.33 not probably not exactly equal to the amount 00:07:11.36\00:07:13.66 of government money that came in, 00:07:13.70\00:07:15.03 but it debilitated 00:07:15.06\00:07:16.40 the commitment of the church giving. 00:07:16.43\00:07:19.03 So there's something to be said for sacrificial, 00:07:19.07\00:07:21.27 focused support of church operations 00:07:21.30\00:07:24.44 by the members or and their sympathizers 00:07:24.47\00:07:27.41 rather than formal support. 00:07:27.44\00:07:29.94 And, you know, this dynamic is seen in England 00:07:29.98\00:07:32.11 with the state church, it's as weak as water, 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.25 but it gets all its funding from the state. 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.15 People don't care for it. It's sort of delegitimized. 00:07:37.19\00:07:39.69 Taking government money changes your brain. 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.99 Yeah, that's the another to way put it. 00:07:43.02\00:07:44.36 The way you support your church. 00:07:44.39\00:07:46.29 Yeah. It does. 00:07:46.33\00:07:47.93 And, you know, I always say 00:07:47.96\00:07:50.27 if you want free education, there is free education 00:07:50.30\00:07:54.47 to be had in every town in this country. 00:07:54.50\00:07:57.57 If you want an education, that's going to make 00:07:57.61\00:08:00.21 a difference in your child's life, 00:08:00.24\00:08:02.44 in your child's eternal life, 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.98 then you're gonna put your money 00:08:05.01\00:08:06.85 where it matters, 00:08:06.88\00:08:08.22 and know that that kind of education isn't free. 00:08:08.25\00:08:11.22 And the other problem, 00:08:11.25\00:08:12.59 of course, is that because we're Americans, 00:08:12.62\00:08:17.09 we tend to just let people do their own thing, 00:08:17.13\00:08:22.36 and you support your child's education. 00:08:22.40\00:08:25.83 And I tell people all the time, 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.04 your church school has all the money it needs. 00:08:28.07\00:08:31.87 It's just sitting in people's wallets 00:08:31.91\00:08:34.04 or bank accounts. 00:08:34.08\00:08:35.41 I like that. 00:08:35.44\00:08:36.78 And what you need to do is make the school 00:08:36.81\00:08:40.45 or whatever job that you're doing in your church, 00:08:40.48\00:08:43.95 to make that happen you find it at your church. 00:08:43.99\00:08:47.89 You have to get through to people sensibilities, 00:08:47.92\00:08:49.29 they'll give more money. 00:08:49.32\00:08:50.66 You're right. 00:08:50.69\00:08:52.03 And within our churches, I can't miss the opportunity. 00:08:52.06\00:08:54.53 There's been the idea in the past 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.16 that on a certain appeal, 00:08:56.20\00:08:58.43 there's only a finite amount of money available. 00:08:58.47\00:09:00.97 And then if someone else goes for the same dollar 00:09:01.00\00:09:03.57 and then have to split it that isn't true at all. 00:09:03.61\00:09:05.57 Yeah. 00:09:05.61\00:09:07.38 You know, there is a finite amount 00:09:07.41\00:09:09.08 of money in the whole country or in the whole community. 00:09:09.11\00:09:11.51 But that's seldom been reached. 00:09:11.55\00:09:13.05 People respond when they're touched on an issue. 00:09:13.08\00:09:15.62 And they can be touched different ways. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.02 Yes, definitely. 00:09:17.05\00:09:18.39 And yes, when the government's involved 00:09:18.42\00:09:20.12 or Big Brother's involved, 00:09:20.16\00:09:21.59 maybe I don't need to reach us deep 00:09:21.62\00:09:23.96 that clearly is effective. 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.33 Yeah. 00:09:25.36\00:09:27.53 So where do you think this voucher thing's going now 00:09:27.56\00:09:30.37 because I don't claim to be fully up to speed, 00:09:30.40\00:09:33.23 but I've been reading a number of articles 00:09:33.27\00:09:35.00 that the argument of vouchers is popping up 00:09:35.04\00:09:38.04 quite a bit nowadays. 00:09:38.07\00:09:39.41 And I just put it down to the fact 00:09:39.44\00:09:41.14 of this unprecedented alliance 00:09:41.18\00:09:42.91 between this administration, this president who's... 00:09:42.94\00:09:48.55 That's a good thing, as far as it goes 00:09:48.58\00:09:51.25 that he wants to support religion, 00:09:51.29\00:09:52.89 but he doesn't know except what he's told by this faction, 00:09:52.92\00:09:55.86 and they're saying, 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.23 "Well, we want more support of our schools." 00:09:57.26\00:09:59.23 And I think that's how it's manifesting itself, 00:09:59.26\00:10:02.06 a renewed call for vouchers. 00:10:02.10\00:10:04.90 I think the vouchers at this stage of the game 00:10:04.93\00:10:08.07 have more to do with the Supreme Court 00:10:08.10\00:10:11.57 than anything because it's the Supreme Court, 00:10:11.61\00:10:14.18 it's going to say whether or not they're constitutional 00:10:14.21\00:10:16.85 or not constitutional. 00:10:16.88\00:10:18.41 And this Supreme Court is, as you know, majority Catholic, 00:10:18.45\00:10:22.38 and Catholics tend to not have a problem 00:10:22.42\00:10:27.26 with that state supporting the church, 00:10:27.29\00:10:31.19 around the world, throughout the world 00:10:31.23\00:10:34.13 the state supports the church. 00:10:34.16\00:10:35.66 Is there a case before that based on this right now? 00:10:35.70\00:10:38.83 Not right now that I know of. I can't think of one. 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.20 Yeah. 00:10:40.24\00:10:41.57 So we're sort of waiting for a testament. 00:10:41.60\00:10:42.94 Yeah. I remember a few years ago... 00:10:42.97\00:10:46.64 I don't remember the case but listening to 00:10:46.68\00:10:48.31 a Supreme Court discussion, 00:10:48.34\00:10:50.18 it was always the case 00:10:50.21\00:10:51.55 that dealt with church-state issues. 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.01 And they got to discussing among themselves 00:10:53.05\00:10:55.58 whether or not they could give money 00:10:55.62\00:10:56.95 to build a church and what scarred me 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.42 is they were joking, but they went around 00:11:00.46\00:11:02.39 and the consensus of the court at that time was it says, 00:11:02.42\00:11:05.73 "Okay, as long as they built churches for everyone." 00:11:05.76\00:11:08.26 Yeah, well, I take it back, 00:11:08.30\00:11:09.63 the Supreme Court does have a case. 00:11:09.66\00:11:11.37 They have the Montana voucher case 00:11:11.40\00:11:14.70 that they agreed to take. 00:11:14.74\00:11:16.57 Espinoza versus... 00:11:16.60\00:11:20.98 Oh, yeah, I do know the title. Yeah. 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.11 So we'll see what happens. We will see what happens. 00:11:23.14\00:11:24.81 And there is no question the last two sessions 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.58 to the court have probably changed the dynamic 00:11:27.62\00:11:30.12 and yet they're not Catholic. 00:11:30.15\00:11:31.75 That's interesting as part of your comment, 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.56 but I think they've changed the dynamic 00:11:33.59\00:11:35.29 more toward facilitating church... 00:11:35.32\00:11:37.83 State support of the churches. Yes. 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.66 It's not really as off-limits as it once was. 00:11:39.69\00:11:42.63 No, it's not. 00:11:42.66\00:11:44.00 So when it happens next time, 00:11:44.03\00:11:46.17 what are you going to do in the Southern Union, 00:11:46.20\00:11:48.57 you've got a battle plan? 00:11:48.60\00:11:50.71 We always have a battle plan. 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.07 We always want to make sure that 00:11:52.11\00:11:55.84 state and church are separate. 00:11:55.88\00:11:58.21 We always want to make sure that 00:11:58.25\00:12:00.05 the Establishment Clause is being upheld. 00:12:00.08\00:12:02.78 And like I said before, 00:12:02.82\00:12:05.05 when you take government money for vouchers, 00:12:05.09\00:12:07.86 even though it's for something good, 00:12:07.89\00:12:10.33 something to fund that you love and believe in 00:12:10.36\00:12:13.29 like your church school or your church, 00:12:13.33\00:12:16.23 what happens is you're accepting 00:12:16.26\00:12:19.13 government shekels. 00:12:19.17\00:12:20.50 And the government doesn't really like 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.40 to give money and not have any control. 00:12:22.44\00:12:25.01 And so that's always the thing you want to remember. 00:12:25.04\00:12:28.14 There are absolutely no shekels without shackles. 00:12:28.18\00:12:32.11 So let's keep separation 00:12:32.15\00:12:34.32 of church and state strong that way. 00:12:34.35\00:12:39.69 This is saying in law and politics, follow the money. 00:12:39.72\00:12:44.23 And when we're talking about religious liberty 00:12:44.26\00:12:47.40 and maintaining the discrete difference between 00:12:47.43\00:12:49.63 church and state, 00:12:49.66\00:12:51.00 very often money is part of that story. 00:12:51.03\00:12:54.70 In the Old Testament, 00:12:54.74\00:12:56.07 there are plenty of accounts of people 00:12:56.10\00:12:58.57 from Gehazi to certain magician trying to sell the spirit 00:12:58.61\00:13:03.75 and the services of the Holy Spirit 00:13:03.78\00:13:07.62 to others prostituting their religion. 00:13:07.65\00:13:11.29 We know that that is wrong. 00:13:11.32\00:13:13.96 When we talk about state aid through there's something 00:13:13.99\00:13:16.59 more subtle at work, it seems a good thing. 00:13:16.62\00:13:20.16 We were told as early Seventh-day Adventists 00:13:20.20\00:13:22.23 that God does move upon kings and princes to give money fine. 00:13:22.26\00:13:26.40 But when that money comes, it often by its very existence, 00:13:26.43\00:13:30.87 corrupts and diverts. 00:13:30.91\00:13:33.48 Much better for those who have deep faith 00:13:33.51\00:13:35.41 to realize that God will provide the cattle 00:13:35.44\00:13:38.51 on a 1,000 Hills are His, 00:13:38.55\00:13:41.08 but we should not look to the gods of Ashdod, Escalon, 00:13:41.12\00:13:45.99 and all the rest of the foreign places for money 00:13:46.02\00:13:49.12 and support that God's own people 00:13:49.16\00:13:51.33 and God's own means can supply. 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.96 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.80
