Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.86\00:00:30.83 This is the program that's bringing you news, 00:00:30.86\00:00:33.23 views, information and discussion 00:00:33.26\00:00:35.06 on religious liberty events in the US 00:00:35.10\00:00:37.53 and around the world. 00:00:37.57\00:00:38.97 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:39.00\00:00:42.84 and my guest on this program is Amireh Al Haddad. 00:00:42.87\00:00:46.24 You're the director of PARL, 00:00:46.27\00:00:48.38 Public Affairs and Religious Liberty 00:00:48.41\00:00:49.94 for the Southern District of the United States 00:00:49.98\00:00:53.78 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, right? 00:00:53.82\00:00:55.75 Yes, I have. 00:00:55.78\00:00:57.12 Sounds like a court introduction. 00:00:57.15\00:00:58.69 Yes. 00:00:58.72\00:01:00.06 I have eight states in my territory 00:01:00.09\00:01:02.02 all in the southeast. 00:01:02.06\00:01:03.39 Yeah. 00:01:03.43\00:01:04.76 How long have you been working in the unions? 00:01:04.79\00:01:07.13 Well... 00:01:07.16\00:01:08.50 I think 20 years or so, isn't it? 00:01:08.53\00:01:09.86 Yeah, more than 20 years. 00:01:09.90\00:01:11.23 I don't want to give my age away. 00:01:11.27\00:01:12.67 But I came in 1992, 00:01:12.70\00:01:16.34 and just kind of worked my way through. 00:01:16.37\00:01:19.44 So you've seen a lot of developments 00:01:19.47\00:01:21.44 on the religious liberty front. 00:01:21.48\00:01:22.81 I have. 00:01:22.84\00:01:24.18 The running joke is that I'm not an attorney, 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.78 but I play one on TV. 00:01:26.82\00:01:28.15 Yeah. 00:01:28.18\00:01:29.52 So sometimes I think it's an advantage 00:01:29.55\00:01:30.89 not to be an attorney, they get to focus 00:01:30.92\00:01:33.15 on the technicalities and my feeling is that 00:01:33.19\00:01:37.19 sometimes the lawyers will willingly suspend 00:01:37.23\00:01:40.46 a sort of a moral judgment, so which makes them a moron. 00:01:40.50\00:01:43.20 Right. 00:01:43.23\00:01:44.83 Anyhow, let's talk about some current events that 00:01:44.87\00:01:48.90 have a bearing on religious liberty. 00:01:48.94\00:01:51.47 This present administration in the United States is bold. 00:01:51.51\00:01:55.24 Let's just say that, even if you agree with it, 00:01:55.28\00:01:57.81 it's bold, and disagree. 00:01:57.85\00:02:01.52 And I think nothing shows that 00:02:01.55\00:02:03.62 boldness more than the president's recent offer 00:02:03.65\00:02:08.62 of a peace plan for between the Palestinians and Israel. 00:02:08.66\00:02:14.56 Now, you know, we can discuss the politics of that. 00:02:14.60\00:02:17.33 But what do you think lies behind that? 00:02:17.37\00:02:19.70 Why would a US president throw something out, 00:02:19.73\00:02:23.84 seemingly politically a non starter? 00:02:23.87\00:02:27.28 But what's he got to gain from it? 00:02:27.31\00:02:28.64 Where's this coming from? 00:02:28.68\00:02:30.88 You're asking somebody 00:02:30.91\00:02:32.28 with an Arab background to talk about. 00:02:32.31\00:02:37.45 Well, because I know the answer doesn't lie in the Middle East, 00:02:37.49\00:02:39.65 it lies here. 00:02:39.69\00:02:41.02 Correct. It does lie here. What's informing it? 00:02:41.06\00:02:43.43 It's a combination of his voter base, 00:02:43.46\00:02:47.76 our current president's voter base, 00:02:47.80\00:02:50.03 which is evangelical Christians, 00:02:50.07\00:02:52.67 and his vice president's connection 00:02:52.70\00:02:55.64 to evangelical Christians. 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.77 It starts with a misunderstanding of prophecy 00:02:57.81\00:03:03.35 within that group 00:03:03.38\00:03:06.48 in terms of the millennium, 00:03:06.51\00:03:10.42 what's going to happen in the millennium, 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.85 where the millennium will take place. 00:03:12.89\00:03:15.19 And what's the millennium? 00:03:15.22\00:03:16.56 I'm sure not everybody that watches the program 00:03:16.59\00:03:18.69 even knows what's this millenarian 00:03:18.73\00:03:20.60 or millennium concept. 00:03:20.63\00:03:21.96 So the millennium is the thousand years 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.73 that is talked about in Revelation 00:03:24.77\00:03:27.44 after Jesus comes. 00:03:27.47\00:03:29.60 Well, that's part of the game. 00:03:29.64\00:03:31.64 Is that the thousand years before He comes, 00:03:31.67\00:03:34.28 after He comes, 00:03:34.31\00:03:35.64 after Seventh-day Adventists even have a different timeframe 00:03:35.68\00:03:41.88 to everything than the other people. 00:03:41.92\00:03:43.28 It's about three or four different chronologies, 00:03:43.32\00:03:45.95 which are all enabled 00:03:45.99\00:03:47.32 because Revelation is clearly not written 00:03:47.36\00:03:49.29 in totally linear fashion. 00:03:49.32\00:03:51.03 Right. 00:03:51.06\00:03:52.39 And it really depends on 00:03:52.43\00:03:53.76 whether or not you're from the school 00:03:53.80\00:03:55.13 of pre millennialism or post millennialism. 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.57 Do you believe that Jesus comes before the millennium 00:03:58.60\00:04:02.17 or after the millennium? 00:04:02.20\00:04:03.87 And then mixed in with this is the secret rapture... 00:04:03.91\00:04:07.88 The secret rapture. 00:04:07.91\00:04:09.24 The good people are taken away 00:04:09.28\00:04:10.61 and they don't have to suffer through 00:04:10.65\00:04:12.68 tough stuff anyway. 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.05 Yeah, it's actually a very theologically 00:04:14.08\00:04:16.95 important factor that a lot of people 00:04:16.99\00:04:20.19 don't recognize the importance of it. 00:04:20.22\00:04:22.86 And the importance is that 00:04:22.89\00:04:24.69 if you believe as many evangelicals believe 00:04:24.73\00:04:29.16 that Christ is going to reign on earth in the millennium, 00:04:29.20\00:04:33.17 what you have done is you've set yourself up 00:04:33.20\00:04:37.44 to fall for the Antichrist. 00:04:37.47\00:04:41.64 Yes, I like that. That's a good point. 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.01 Because the Bible's very clear that Jesus will not, 00:04:43.04\00:04:48.32 Jesus is clear that 00:04:48.35\00:04:49.72 He's not going to touch the earth 00:04:49.75\00:04:52.69 when He comes back the second time. 00:04:52.72\00:04:56.26 And so this is the difference between understanding that 00:04:56.29\00:05:02.90 whoever touches this earth is not going to be Christ, 00:05:02.93\00:05:06.47 and who the real Christ is. 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.67 Because the Bible says that the Satan will come 00:05:08.70\00:05:10.67 with the appearance of an angel. 00:05:10.71\00:05:12.24 Yes. 00:05:12.27\00:05:13.61 And it seems to describe a fake appearance, 00:05:13.64\00:05:15.98 at least something that gets people's attention. 00:05:16.01\00:05:18.15 They think, oh, this is the Holy One, 00:05:18.18\00:05:19.51 maybe Jesus, 00:05:19.55\00:05:20.88 and he'll appear all over the world and... 00:05:20.92\00:05:22.82 And this may be too deep. 00:05:22.85\00:05:24.55 I mean that it may be too deep theologically 00:05:24.59\00:05:28.39 to talk about on Liberty Insider. 00:05:28.42\00:05:30.79 It's very complicated. It is complicated. 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.26 Well, it's too deep for us to settle it. 00:05:32.29\00:05:33.76 Yeah. 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.13 But I think we can bring it up, 00:05:35.16\00:05:36.50 people need to know this stuff is at play. 00:05:36.53\00:05:38.00 Now on religious liberty per se, 00:05:38.03\00:05:41.50 it doesn't matter 00:05:41.54\00:05:43.17 when you're talking about the right of all people 00:05:43.20\00:05:44.91 to believe or disbelieve whatever they want. 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.48 But it's necessary to get to this explain this to, 00:05:47.51\00:05:51.25 so people understand what's really going on. 00:05:51.28\00:05:53.45 Yeah, because what's really going on 00:05:53.48\00:05:55.32 is the evangelical base here in America 00:05:55.35\00:05:58.19 is trying to prepare 00:05:58.22\00:06:04.03 Jerusalem for Christ's return. 00:06:04.06\00:06:08.06 It's one of the reasons why in 2017 00:06:08.10\00:06:11.23 Trump moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. 00:06:11.27\00:06:16.10 That was a evangelical push 00:06:16.14\00:06:20.31 for individuals who were his base voters. 00:06:20.34\00:06:24.48 And what troubles me, 00:06:24.51\00:06:25.85 it should trouble a lot of people 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.22 that may or may not believe this 00:06:27.25\00:06:28.95 while at placates that basal plays to them, 00:06:28.98\00:06:31.55 it also provokes precisely what they think will happen. 00:06:31.59\00:06:34.79 Exactly. 00:06:34.82\00:06:36.16 It's a purposeful self fulfilling prophecy. 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.03 Yes. 00:06:38.06\00:06:39.39 So it's really a provocation 00:06:39.43\00:06:43.80 for the people in that area 00:06:43.83\00:06:46.57 who already have quite strong opinions on it. 00:06:46.60\00:06:49.90 And this peace treaty, I think, is the latest thing. 00:06:49.94\00:06:52.67 To come up with a peace treaty 00:06:52.71\00:06:54.04 that's so biased toward Israel's agenda. 00:06:54.08\00:06:56.75 And, you know, we're all sympathetic to Israel. 00:06:56.78\00:07:00.22 Some more than others, but I think you know, 00:07:00.25\00:07:02.15 who would wish well to any country, 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.22 which badly to any country, and particularly, 00:07:04.25\00:07:07.96 the connection to the Jews left over in, 00:07:07.99\00:07:12.09 in World War II from the Holocaust. 00:07:12.13\00:07:14.46 There was sympathy to as they settled 00:07:14.50\00:07:16.43 in the Middle East and so on. 00:07:16.46\00:07:17.80 And that sort of spiraled out of control. 00:07:17.83\00:07:19.53 But nobody wants other than perhaps a odd manager 00:07:19.57\00:07:23.41 wanted to wipe them off the face of the planet. 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.67 But a peace treaty which is needed, 00:07:25.71\00:07:29.11 why would you present 00:07:29.14\00:07:30.48 something that's sort of packaged 00:07:30.51\00:07:31.88 and biased toward Israel one party 00:07:31.91\00:07:35.15 and then say to the other, take it or leave it? 00:07:35.18\00:07:37.32 To me, this is the end game. 00:07:37.35\00:07:38.92 That's what's very troubling about it. 00:07:38.95\00:07:41.66 And as you've just explained well, 00:07:41.69\00:07:44.09 the origins of that are not necessarily in a wish 00:07:44.13\00:07:47.06 to sort of smooth things over. 00:07:47.10\00:07:48.93 It's to placate the base whose very agenda is dynamite. 00:07:48.96\00:07:53.80 They want the Armageddon. 00:07:53.84\00:07:57.54 They want the horse, the blood up 00:07:57.57\00:07:58.91 to the horse's bridle as the Bible says. 00:07:58.94\00:08:00.98 And it is this type of move by the US 00:08:01.01\00:08:06.65 to placate evangelicals in this attitude 00:08:06.68\00:08:10.59 that really plays 00:08:10.62\00:08:13.89 into the issue of terrorism 00:08:13.92\00:08:17.33 and why the US is so demonized 00:08:17.36\00:08:21.60 by Middle East Arabs, especially Muslims. 00:08:21.63\00:08:25.53 And it doesn't, it does not help to continue 00:08:25.57\00:08:30.61 to do what the accuser is saying you're doing. 00:08:30.64\00:08:33.54 I know. 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.41 And I feel very sad on this development, 00:08:35.44\00:08:39.21 looking at the Middle East, where you know, 00:08:39.25\00:08:41.25 any reasonable, intelligent person 00:08:41.28\00:08:43.99 would want tensions to drop 00:08:44.02\00:08:45.59 and for all parties to be better off if, 00:08:45.62\00:08:48.69 you know, it's unlikely that everybody could be happy 00:08:48.72\00:08:51.89 to the fullest degree in any sort of a settlement. 00:08:51.93\00:08:54.40 There's going to be some compromise, 00:08:54.43\00:08:55.96 but you want to ease it, but this seems to me, 00:08:56.00\00:08:58.83 it just throws doctoral gas on the fire. 00:08:58.87\00:09:01.90 And we need to explain to our viewers 00:09:01.94\00:09:05.17 from the point of view of religion 00:09:05.21\00:09:06.88 and religious liberty 00:09:06.91\00:09:08.24 and particularly the separation of church and state, 00:09:08.28\00:09:10.75 the ideal, you know what's going on here? 00:09:10.78\00:09:14.12 I don't think under any circumstances 00:09:14.15\00:09:17.22 this fits the model of separation 00:09:17.25\00:09:18.75 of church and state. 00:09:18.79\00:09:20.12 This fits the model of the medieval period 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.69 where a political power with a religious agenda 00:09:22.72\00:09:26.23 either goes on a crusade 00:09:26.26\00:09:27.60 or starts a program or whatever. 00:09:27.63\00:09:30.90 Those are not good dynamics 00:09:30.93\00:09:32.80 when you mix any religion 00:09:32.83\00:09:34.74 into that sort of a dynamic, are they? 00:09:34.77\00:09:38.17 No. 00:09:38.21\00:09:39.54 There is, you know, 00:09:39.57\00:09:41.58 when you pick one religion against the other, 00:09:41.61\00:09:47.68 you add to the friction that's already there. 00:09:47.72\00:09:52.59 Very little is needed to escalate. 00:09:52.62\00:09:58.06 You know, the conflict that is going on there. 00:09:58.09\00:10:01.06 Let me throw in a wildcard 00:10:01.10\00:10:02.43 that you probably in your wildest dreams 00:10:02.46\00:10:03.80 wouldn't think it would be connected to this topic. 00:10:03.83\00:10:05.67 But do you, when I bring it up, 00:10:05.70\00:10:08.40 can you see a connection or a necessary connection 00:10:08.44\00:10:12.27 between what's going on in the US at the moment 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.38 where we're tearing down statues 00:10:14.41\00:10:17.05 and remembrances of bad periods in particular 00:10:17.08\00:10:20.42 the Civil War and some of the anti heroes who, 00:10:20.45\00:10:24.52 heroes to some perhaps, 00:10:24.55\00:10:26.96 how would you relate that dynamic 00:10:26.99\00:10:29.82 to what we've been talking about 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.89 in the Middle East? 00:10:31.93\00:10:33.26 Yeah, that's a little off for me. 00:10:33.29\00:10:36.13 Well, I'm not really sure that I'm not sure 00:10:36.16\00:10:39.73 where you're coming from on that actually. 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.10 No, but I have a point to make. 00:10:41.14\00:10:43.61 You know, we... 00:10:43.64\00:10:45.57 There's a lot of historical revisionism going on. 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.84 Yes. 00:10:47.88\00:10:49.31 And I think some regrets about what's happened in the past. 00:10:49.34\00:10:54.02 And I don't think we should tear down 00:10:54.05\00:10:56.35 every statue where you sort of wipe world history. 00:10:56.38\00:10:59.19 You go through Europe, 00:10:59.22\00:11:00.56 and there's all sorts of men on horseback and all the rest. 00:11:00.59\00:11:02.96 And if you know the history 00:11:02.99\00:11:04.33 very seldom are they Santa Claus. 00:11:04.36\00:11:08.46 You know, they cut somebody's head off, 00:11:08.50\00:11:10.13 they did something wrong. 00:11:10.17\00:11:11.97 And you know, you don't have to lionize them 00:11:12.00\00:11:13.97 to recognize their significance in history. 00:11:14.00\00:11:16.04 But to go to the good side of what's happening in the US, 00:11:16.07\00:11:19.14 we're looking at it with a tender conscience, 00:11:19.17\00:11:21.21 perhaps and not wanting to inflame the old rivalries 00:11:21.24\00:11:25.28 that in the US led to a civil war. 00:11:25.31\00:11:27.98 Why don't we apply that 00:11:28.02\00:11:29.35 same sort of thinking to the Middle East, 00:11:29.38\00:11:34.12 instead of stirring it up each time? 00:11:34.16\00:11:37.26 Or let me take another angle on it. 00:11:37.29\00:11:40.23 If as Israel 00:11:40.26\00:11:44.60 I think with a religious sensibility, 00:11:44.63\00:11:46.70 even though it's a socialist state, 00:11:46.74\00:11:49.34 keeps talking about, 00:11:49.37\00:11:50.71 I remember Begin, the Prime Minister talk about 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.94 they had a claim to Sumeria. 00:11:52.97\00:11:55.11 What's he talking about? That's Bible talk, right? 00:11:55.14\00:11:58.18 How many thousand years ago was that? 00:11:58.21\00:11:59.88 Two thousand years ago. 00:11:59.91\00:12:01.25 Are we going to settle the wrongs of 2,000 years ago 00:12:01.28\00:12:05.39 if we started that here? 00:12:05.42\00:12:06.99 I said on the program recently that I filmed, 00:12:07.02\00:12:09.82 I said we'll be living in teepees, 00:12:09.86\00:12:11.86 nobody in their right mind, 00:12:11.89\00:12:13.50 even I think the original inhabitant, 00:12:13.53\00:12:16.50 the descendants of the original habitants think 00:12:16.53\00:12:18.80 she can crank the, you know, 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.80 the world back to 2000 years ago 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.30 and start again. 00:12:22.34\00:12:23.84 We have to seek justice here 00:12:23.87\00:12:26.04 and try to minimize the conflict 00:12:26.07\00:12:29.54 but not buy into a scenario where you, you know, 00:12:29.58\00:12:33.52 you reach back into history and this mythical ideal, 00:12:33.55\00:12:36.42 which happens to be loaded with theological implications, 00:12:36.45\00:12:41.12 you know, and triumph, religious triumphalism, 00:12:41.16\00:12:44.03 you're not going to plant that as a goal 00:12:44.06\00:12:48.06 and you know that 00:12:48.10\00:12:49.43 it will bother other religionists. 00:12:49.46\00:12:52.23 The religionist history issue is very troublesome 00:12:52.27\00:12:57.81 because history is what it was. 00:12:57.84\00:13:01.98 And you don't want to change it because if you change it, 00:13:02.01\00:13:04.85 how do you learn from it? 00:13:04.88\00:13:06.21 How do you remember it? 00:13:06.25\00:13:08.22 But more than that, you can't really fully undo the past. 00:13:08.25\00:13:12.55 No, you can never undo the past. 00:13:12.59\00:13:13.92 You know, I thought about this 00:13:13.96\00:13:15.29 a lot on this isn't religious liberty, 00:13:15.32\00:13:17.79 but just on a world history and a human dynamic stage, 00:13:17.83\00:13:21.43 there's some justification, 00:13:21.46\00:13:23.06 I think within living memory to do something, 00:13:23.10\00:13:27.07 certainly the current generation, 00:13:27.10\00:13:28.90 but you get further back, 00:13:28.94\00:13:30.27 first of all information is unreliable. 00:13:30.31\00:13:32.87 And then the facts 00:13:32.91\00:13:34.24 on the ground are just so irrevocable, 00:13:34.28\00:13:37.25 that and then, you know, this group and that group 00:13:37.28\00:13:40.48 and like in our early Adventist history, 00:13:40.52\00:13:44.15 really jumping back for Adventism. 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.09 They had huge debates 00:13:46.12\00:13:47.66 about what Germanic tribes made up, 00:13:47.69\00:13:50.86 you know, well who were the 10 original Germanic tribes 00:13:50.89\00:13:54.63 that made up all 00:13:54.66\00:13:56.00 of the modern peoples of Europe. 00:13:56.03\00:13:57.37 And they, you know, you look at the history of it, 00:13:57.40\00:13:59.10 they moved here, they lived there. 00:13:59.13\00:14:01.14 You got to try to sort of crank back history 00:14:01.17\00:14:03.87 to where they came from, 00:14:03.91\00:14:05.71 nobody's even suggesting that, it's an exercise in futility. 00:14:05.74\00:14:09.84 It is. 00:14:09.88\00:14:11.21 And so I think people with the religious sensibility, 00:14:11.25\00:14:15.12 which they're allowed to have, 00:14:15.15\00:14:17.19 but they've been granted a very dangerous power 00:14:17.22\00:14:20.96 to apply that in a political scene 00:14:20.99\00:14:23.99 and mayhem is likely to follow. 00:14:24.03\00:14:26.53 It is, as you know, the sons of Abraham 00:14:26.56\00:14:30.50 had been fighting since they were born. 00:14:30.53\00:14:33.17 Ishmael and Isaac have been fighting for forever. 00:14:33.20\00:14:37.24 To add the US dynamic into it which is a different goal, 00:14:37.27\00:14:41.98 a different reason for doing that. 00:14:42.01\00:14:45.68 It really just kind of 00:14:45.71\00:14:47.72 puts you at a disadvantage 00:14:47.75\00:14:51.65 on the US's side of things, 00:14:51.69\00:14:53.76 because they're never going to be 00:14:53.79\00:14:56.69 able to work it out. 00:14:56.73\00:14:58.33 Good summary of the situation. Let's take a break. 00:14:58.36\00:15:00.90 We'll be back to continue this discussion shortly. 00:15:00.93\00:15:03.73 Stay with us. 00:15:03.77\00:15:05.10
