Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 I was going over 00:00:04.10\00:00:07.64 some of the details of the English Civil War 00:00:07.67\00:00:09.84 that I feel so influenced, 00:00:09.87\00:00:13.48 not just the American War of Independence 00:00:13.51\00:00:15.74 but events right up to our day. 00:00:15.78\00:00:17.85 And one of the most significant aspects 00:00:17.88\00:00:19.75 was their sense of prophetic timeliness. 00:00:19.78\00:00:25.75 On another program, 00:00:25.79\00:00:27.62 I've railed a bit against the dispensationalists 00:00:27.66\00:00:33.06 in the evangelical community 00:00:33.09\00:00:35.63 who are allowing their views of prophecy 00:00:35.66\00:00:39.23 to bleed over into their political views, 00:00:39.27\00:00:41.90 and indeed a rush to war in the Middle East 00:00:41.94\00:00:44.07 because they think it's inevitable, 00:00:44.11\00:00:45.44 might as well bring it about. 00:00:45.47\00:00:47.91 There's no question 00:00:47.94\00:00:49.28 that during the English Civil War, 00:00:49.31\00:00:51.08 many factions of the Puritans 00:00:51.11\00:00:52.68 believed they were at the end of time, 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.98 they were at the moment of God's judgment, 00:00:55.02\00:00:57.15 the millennium was to follow, 00:00:57.19\00:00:58.89 and so there were factions that represented that, 00:00:58.92\00:01:00.82 there were the Levelers, 00:01:00.86\00:01:02.22 a major faction that believe they would stand shortly 00:01:02.26\00:01:05.23 before the judgment bear of God at the last trump as equals. 00:01:05.26\00:01:09.60 So in advance so that you leveled society, 00:01:09.63\00:01:11.80 leveled the hedges, we were all... 00:01:11.83\00:01:13.47 They were proto communists 00:01:13.50\00:01:14.84 if you wanted to twist it that way, 00:01:14.87\00:01:16.20 but it was from a religious point of view. 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.24 Then they were the ranters, who were ranting and railing, 00:01:18.27\00:01:22.34 they were the sort of the ones with the end of the world, 00:01:22.38\00:01:24.28 you know, "The end of the world is upon us," type stuff. 00:01:24.31\00:01:27.78 Most significantly for me as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:27.82\00:01:30.69 and my views of prophecy, 00:01:30.72\00:01:32.05 they were the Fifth Monarchy Men. 00:01:32.09\00:01:34.26 Oliver Cromwell was most sympathetic 00:01:34.29\00:01:36.06 to this group. 00:01:36.09\00:01:37.43 They believe they were at the end of history, 00:01:37.46\00:01:40.13 as represented by the image of Daniel 2 00:01:40.16\00:01:42.80 and they were in the fifth and final kingdom, 00:01:42.83\00:01:48.30 soon to be replaced by the kingdom of God. 00:01:48.34\00:01:50.14 And, of course, 00:01:50.17\00:01:51.51 that has an incredibly self fulfilling aspect to it. 00:01:51.54\00:01:57.51 But let me go back to this figure of John Milton 00:01:57.55\00:02:01.85 and his involvement in this apocalyptic mindset. 00:02:01.88\00:02:06.62 He outlived Oliver Cromwell. 00:02:06.65\00:02:09.19 He nearly lost his life 00:02:09.22\00:02:12.09 as a signatory to the death penalty 00:02:12.13\00:02:13.90 for the king when the king's son came back. 00:02:13.93\00:02:16.26 He hunted down those regicides as they were called, 00:02:16.30\00:02:20.10 but John Milton was so famous 00:02:20.14\00:02:22.54 and so well protected by well placed people 00:02:22.57\00:02:25.47 that he escaped with his life. 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.44 And went into some obscurity but kept writing. 00:02:27.48\00:02:31.08 And amazingly, 00:02:31.11\00:02:32.45 even though he lost his sight in 1652, 00:02:32.48\00:02:36.28 he was only, I think in his 40s at that time, 00:02:36.32\00:02:39.49 lost his sight completely. 00:02:39.52\00:02:42.12 In his blind condition dictating to his daughter, 00:02:42.16\00:02:48.50 he wrote, 00:02:48.53\00:02:49.86 arguably the greatest poem in the English language, 00:02:49.90\00:02:52.70 a book length poem called great... 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.24 Sorry, called Paradise Lost. 00:02:55.27\00:02:59.34 Just to give in other word, Paradise Lost, 12 books. 00:02:59.37\00:03:03.88 And Samuel Johnson, 00:03:03.91\00:03:05.25 the literary figure of the time said, "None wished it longer," 00:03:05.28\00:03:09.48 I believe as a Seventh-day Adventist 00:03:09.52\00:03:11.52 that it was influential even in the thinking 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.12 that characterizes my church, 00:03:14.16\00:03:15.69 the so called Great Controversy thing. 00:03:15.72\00:03:18.13 And I want to read you in the little time left 00:03:18.16\00:03:22.06 an excerpt from book 12 toward the end. 00:03:22.10\00:03:24.77 And it just tells the story of the rebellion in heaven, 00:03:24.80\00:03:27.90 the creation of man, the temptation and fall of man, 00:03:27.94\00:03:31.27 and his expulsion from Eden. 00:03:31.31\00:03:32.67 That's the whole book of how paradise was lost. 00:03:32.71\00:03:38.11 And at the end of this, 00:03:38.15\00:03:39.48 he has the angel explaining God's purposes. 00:03:39.51\00:03:42.38 And I think this is the succinct summary 00:03:42.42\00:03:45.05 of the Great Controversy 00:03:45.09\00:03:46.42 because the angel speaks and then Adam says this, 00:03:46.45\00:03:49.12 "But say, if our deliverer up to heaven must re-ascend, 00:03:49.16\00:03:53.43 what will betide the few, His faithful, 00:03:53.46\00:03:56.33 left among the unfaithful herd, the enemies of truth? 00:03:56.36\00:04:00.14 Who then shall guide His people? 00:04:00.17\00:04:02.17 Who defend? 00:04:02.20\00:04:03.61 Will they not deal worse with His followers 00:04:03.64\00:04:06.31 than with Him they dealt? 00:04:06.34\00:04:08.61 "Be sure they will," said the angel, 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.78 "But from heaven he to His own comfortable ascend 00:04:10.81\00:04:14.48 the promise of the Father, 00:04:14.52\00:04:16.35 who shall dwell His spirit within them. 00:04:16.38\00:04:18.95 And the law of faith 00:04:18.99\00:04:20.32 working through love upon their hearts, 00:04:20.36\00:04:22.49 shall right to guide them in all truth, 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.86 and also armed with spiritual armor, 00:04:25.89\00:04:28.20 able to resist Satan's assaults and quenches fiery darts. 00:04:28.23\00:04:32.80 What man can do against them, not afraid, 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.60 go to the death against such cruelties 00:04:35.64\00:04:39.17 within what consolations recompensed 00:04:39.21\00:04:41.24 and often supported, 00:04:41.28\00:04:42.61 so as shall amaze their proudest persecutors, 00:04:42.64\00:04:46.98 for the spirit powered first on His apostles, 00:04:47.02\00:04:51.65 whom He sends to evangelize the nations. 00:04:51.69\00:04:54.19 Then on all baptized, 00:04:54.22\00:04:55.62 shell them with wondrous gifts and you to speak old tongues 00:04:55.66\00:04:59.39 and do old miracles as did the Lord before them. 00:04:59.43\00:05:02.36 Thus they win great numbers of each nation 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.93 to receive with joy, 00:05:05.97\00:05:07.64 the tidings brought from heaven. 00:05:07.67\00:05:10.11 At length their ministry performed 00:05:10.14\00:05:12.17 and race well run, 00:05:12.21\00:05:13.54 their doctrine 00:05:13.58\00:05:14.91 and their story written left they die, 00:05:14.94\00:05:17.58 but in their room as they fall worn, 00:05:17.61\00:05:20.58 wolves shall succeed for teachers. 00:05:20.62\00:05:23.49 Grievers wolves, 00:05:23.52\00:05:25.72 who hold the sacred mysteries of heaven 00:05:25.75\00:05:28.59 to their own vile advantage shall turn 00:05:28.62\00:05:31.19 of lucre, and ambition, 00:05:31.23\00:05:34.20 and the truth with superstitions 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.83 and traditions taint. 00:05:36.87\00:05:38.90 Left only in those written records pure, 00:05:38.93\00:05:42.54 though not but by the spirit understood. 00:05:42.57\00:05:46.01 Then shall they seek to avail themselves of names, 00:05:46.04\00:05:50.05 places and titles, 00:05:50.08\00:05:52.41 and with these to join secular power, 00:05:52.45\00:05:55.38 the feigning still to act by spiritual 00:05:55.42\00:05:58.02 to themselves appropriating the Spirit of God 00:05:58.05\00:06:01.69 promised alike and given to all believers, 00:06:01.72\00:06:04.59 and from that pretense spiritual laws by carnal power 00:06:04.63\00:06:10.10 shall force on every conscience. 00:06:10.13\00:06:13.17 Laws which none shall find left in them and ruled, 00:06:13.20\00:06:16.60 or what the spirit within shall on the heart engrave. 00:06:16.64\00:06:20.34 What will they then, 00:06:20.38\00:06:21.71 but force the spirit of grace itself 00:06:21.74\00:06:24.25 and bind his consort liberty, 00:06:24.28\00:06:27.02 what got and build his living temples 00:06:27.05\00:06:32.05 built by faith to stand, 00:06:32.09\00:06:33.76 their own faith not another's, 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.86 for on earth who against faith and conscience 00:06:35.89\00:06:38.83 can be heard infallible. 00:06:38.86\00:06:40.93 Yet many will presume, 00:06:40.96\00:06:43.16 whence heavy persecution shall arise 00:06:43.20\00:06:45.87 on all who in the worship persevere 00:06:45.90\00:06:48.54 of spirit and truth, the rest, 00:06:48.57\00:06:51.37 far greater part will deem in outward rites 00:06:51.41\00:06:54.94 and specious forms religion satisfied, 00:06:54.98\00:06:59.01 truth shall retire, 00:06:59.05\00:07:00.82 bestruck with slanderous darts 00:07:00.85\00:07:03.08 and works of faith rarely be found. 00:07:03.12\00:07:06.72 So shall the world go on to good, 00:07:06.76\00:07:09.56 malignant to bad man benign, 00:07:09.59\00:07:13.50 under her own weight groaning till the day appear 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.60 of respiration to the just and vengeance to the wicked, 00:07:16.63\00:07:19.90 at return of him, 00:07:19.93\00:07:21.80 so lately promised to thy aid the woman's seed, 00:07:21.84\00:07:26.07 obscurely then foretold. 00:07:26.11\00:07:28.24 Now amplier known thy Savior and thy Lord. 00:07:28.28\00:07:32.88 Last in the clouds from heaven 00:07:32.91\00:07:34.75 to be revealed in glory of the Father, 00:07:34.78\00:07:37.69 to dissolve Satan with his perverted world. 00:07:37.72\00:07:42.76 Then raise from the conflagrant mass, 00:07:42.79\00:07:45.96 purged and refined, new earth, new heavens, 00:07:45.99\00:07:50.53 ages of endless date, 00:07:50.57\00:07:52.57 founded in righteousness and peace and love 00:07:52.60\00:07:56.30 to bring forth fruits, joy and eternal bliss." 00:07:56.34\00:08:01.31 That's a fantastic summation 00:08:01.34\00:08:04.41 of what the Bible tells us in Revelation is to follow 00:08:04.45\00:08:07.85 after this veil of tears if you like. 00:08:07.88\00:08:10.75 It's a fantastic vision for a blind man 00:08:10.79\00:08:14.39 dictating it in the real world. 00:08:14.42\00:08:16.26 And as I read it, I believe it's a verbal poem. 00:08:16.29\00:08:18.99 It's not... 00:08:19.03\00:08:20.90 Even though it's a language of the King James Bible 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.40 closer to that era than today, 00:08:23.43\00:08:25.33 it's really got that dynamic of someone reading it out 00:08:25.37\00:08:27.90 and turning it rather than, 00:08:27.94\00:08:29.50 you know, 00:08:29.54\00:08:30.87 intellectually putting words on paper. 00:08:30.91\00:08:32.87 But he was speaking there 00:08:32.91\00:08:34.71 of the religious theological overlay 00:08:34.74\00:08:40.15 that the Puritans had brought to their conflict in England, 00:08:40.18\00:08:43.92 and I believe in a certain way, 00:08:43.95\00:08:47.16 but a slightly twisted way brought to the new world 00:08:47.19\00:08:50.83 because Milton stayed behind, 00:08:50.86\00:08:52.76 escaped execution and kept writing. 00:08:52.79\00:08:56.60 When the king came back 00:08:56.63\00:08:57.97 and started hunting down the regicides 00:08:58.00\00:09:01.57 and the revolutionaries from the civil war 00:09:01.60\00:09:04.14 that now were on the losing side, 00:09:04.17\00:09:06.24 many of them, 00:09:06.27\00:09:07.61 thousands fled to the United States 00:09:07.64\00:09:10.35 to the new world, 00:09:10.38\00:09:12.35 mostly down south, 00:09:12.38\00:09:13.72 but they fled 00:09:13.75\00:09:15.08 and seeded the United States with views that in my view, 00:09:15.12\00:09:19.25 characterized 00:09:19.29\00:09:20.62 or brought to bear American exceptionalism, 00:09:20.66\00:09:23.86 the idea of religious entitlement, 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.83 the idea that this was a promised land, 00:09:26.86\00:09:30.83 and they brought with them 00:09:30.87\00:09:32.43 what they still sing in England, 00:09:32.47\00:09:35.17 from the poet William Blake, 00:09:35.20\00:09:36.54 you know, that those feet in ancient time 00:09:36.57\00:09:38.97 walk upon England's green and pleasant land. 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.34 And he says, "I will not rest till I have built Jerusalem 00:09:41.38\00:09:44.45 here in England." 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.38 Well, that's shifted, and in many ways, 00:09:46.41\00:09:49.75 American exceptionalism 00:09:49.78\00:09:51.12 and the idea that no American president 00:09:51.15\00:09:53.02 can ever apologies for what we do 00:09:53.05\00:09:55.19 is all derived 00:09:55.22\00:09:56.56 from this Puritan ethic revolution were here 00:09:56.59\00:10:01.13 we're going to establish the kingdom of God on earth. 00:10:01.16\00:10:03.90 And yet Milton himself said, "It's in the heart. 00:10:03.93\00:10:07.14 It's not through power and prestige and money." 00:10:07.17\00:10:10.31 It's... 00:10:10.34\00:10:12.27 As Jesus said, "The kingdom is within you." 00:10:12.31\00:10:15.34 And it really escaped the Puritan revolutionaries. 00:10:15.38\00:10:18.55 While much was good about era 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.48 and I would defend Oliver Cromwell 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.12 on a certain level, 00:10:22.15\00:10:23.49 he's not quite the desperate 00:10:23.52\00:10:24.85 that revisionist historians have put forth. 00:10:24.89\00:10:28.12 In fact, he's carved into the stone Reformation wall 00:10:28.16\00:10:32.06 in Geneva, Switzerland, 00:10:32.09\00:10:33.43 one of the great heroes of the Reformation, 00:10:33.46\00:10:35.70 but they revolutionary, 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.93 politically revolutionary fervor, 00:10:37.97\00:10:40.17 I think translates badly in the new world, 00:10:40.20\00:10:43.61 particularly into a secular dynamic 00:10:43.64\00:10:46.14 that has strengthened religion 00:10:46.17\00:10:48.51 purely by its insistence 00:10:48.54\00:10:50.35 on a separation of church and state 00:10:50.38\00:10:51.98 because it is not a separationist's viewpoint. 00:10:52.01\00:10:55.15 It's a triumphalist view that rolls the secular state 00:10:55.18\00:10:59.79 and the coming promised kingdom of God, 00:10:59.82\00:11:01.56 all into one hole. 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.29 John Milton, Paradise Lost, The Great Controversy, 00:11:04.33\00:11:08.26 it's all part of the exciting theme 00:11:08.30\00:11:10.77 that we carry forward. 00:11:10.80\00:11:12.33 And we need to be very careful, 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.00 we keep the parts discrete and separate 00:11:14.04\00:11:16.57 and understand fully the dynamic of then and now. 00:11:16.60\00:11:21.78 I'll be back shortly. 00:11:21.81\00:11:23.38
