Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, I read some words 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.23 that have appeared in Liberty magazine 00:00:05.27\00:00:07.47 as an editorial. 00:00:07.50\00:00:09.24 And I was trying to personalize them more 00:00:09.27\00:00:11.17 for this program, 00:00:11.21\00:00:12.94 which, of course, is piggybacked 00:00:12.97\00:00:15.54 on what we are putting in Liberty magazine, 00:00:15.58\00:00:18.28 which is, I think, 00:00:18.31\00:00:19.65 arguably the largest religious liberty publication, 00:00:19.68\00:00:23.18 probably in the world, certainly in the United States. 00:00:23.22\00:00:26.62 These are interesting times as I was trying to point out, 00:00:26.65\00:00:29.59 and I'll start from the front and work to the back. 00:00:29.62\00:00:33.36 Most recently, the US administration 00:00:33.40\00:00:38.37 and the president in particular, 00:00:38.40\00:00:40.47 with a lot of hoopla announced a peace plan 00:00:40.50\00:00:44.01 or the final peace plan for the Mideast problem 00:00:44.04\00:00:48.38 between the Palestinians and Israel. 00:00:48.41\00:00:51.25 And a number of us that are more than teenagers 00:00:51.28\00:00:54.22 have seen these come and go, 00:00:54.25\00:00:56.38 a lot of hope at the time 00:00:56.42\00:00:57.85 and things seem to revert to the worst case. 00:00:57.89\00:01:00.79 But there's something a little different 00:01:00.82\00:01:02.16 about this one. 00:01:02.19\00:01:03.56 This didn't even have much pretence, 00:01:03.59\00:01:07.53 in fact no pretence of prior discussion 00:01:07.56\00:01:09.90 with the both parties, certainly not the Palestinians. 00:01:09.93\00:01:13.13 It confirms what Israel has been doing 00:01:13.17\00:01:16.10 for some time having a de facto rule 00:01:16.14\00:01:20.38 and promised annexation of lands taken by conquest. 00:01:20.41\00:01:24.68 And the Prime Minister Begin, 00:01:24.71\00:01:28.62 the late Prime Minister Begin of Israel 00:01:28.65\00:01:30.25 used to say the lands of Sumeria 00:01:30.29\00:01:33.29 that are theirs by biblical mandate. 00:01:33.32\00:01:35.62 You know, it's one thing to have a heritage 00:01:35.66\00:01:40.43 that you appeal to a holy book for but in the modern world, 00:01:40.46\00:01:43.87 where not everyone believes a certain faith, 00:01:43.90\00:01:46.70 there have to be solid parameters 00:01:46.74\00:01:49.57 to a claim upon a country. 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.54 And if we went back 2000 years, in many cases, 00:01:51.57\00:01:57.25 we certainly wouldn't be... 00:01:57.28\00:02:00.08 Even here in this location, 00:02:00.12\00:02:01.78 I'd probably be in a teepee somewhere, 00:02:01.82\00:02:04.05 because the modern history is quite rough and ready, 00:02:04.09\00:02:09.79 and then the justice is all along the line. 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.66 And in the modern world, 00:02:12.69\00:02:14.60 trying to settle the Middle East 00:02:14.63\00:02:16.33 does require some balancing act. 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.03 But instead, the US presented 00:02:19.07\00:02:21.50 what amounts to an ultimatum to these warring parties. 00:02:21.54\00:02:25.47 And where did this come from? 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.64 The answer is not hard to come by. 00:02:27.68\00:02:29.84 This was under the influence 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.48 of the so called evangelical right, 00:02:32.51\00:02:37.29 who have an interpretation of prophecy 00:02:37.32\00:02:40.29 that I might not quite share. 00:02:40.32\00:02:42.49 It's an apocalyptic end 00:02:42.52\00:02:43.86 where there's going to be a literal Armageddon 00:02:43.89\00:02:45.59 in the Middle East. 00:02:45.63\00:02:46.96 And the powers including Iran 00:02:47.00\00:02:48.73 are going to come up against Israel 00:02:48.76\00:02:50.17 and be totally destroyed. 00:02:50.20\00:02:52.23 Once you understand that religious expectation, 00:02:52.27\00:02:56.24 by significant and increasingly influential 00:02:56.27\00:03:00.61 religious faction in the US, 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.38 you see why the rush to, 00:03:02.41\00:03:04.71 you know, to take it or leave it 00:03:04.75\00:03:06.48 because there's an expectation 00:03:06.51\00:03:07.98 that this conflict is going to come, 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.29 the other side of that Christ' kingdom. 00:03:10.32\00:03:12.55 So let's get there quick. 00:03:12.59\00:03:14.22 Let's deal with the archenemy of truth, 00:03:14.26\00:03:17.16 you know, Gorgon enemies of truth, Gog and Magog, 00:03:17.19\00:03:19.73 let's deal with Iran, 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.20 you know, let's, 00:03:21.23\00:03:22.56 "Let the blood run to the horses' bridles" 00:03:22.60\00:03:24.53 as the Bible says. 00:03:24.57\00:03:29.20 You know, prophecy is prophecy 00:03:29.24\00:03:31.01 but we cannot work to self-fulfilling prophecies 00:03:31.04\00:03:34.38 or allow religionists 00:03:34.41\00:03:36.31 that we may not share our interpretation 00:03:36.34\00:03:39.71 or even our religion allow them free rein 00:03:39.75\00:03:42.15 to make their religious vision true. 00:03:42.18\00:03:44.39 Unfortunately, there has been a hijacking 00:03:44.42\00:03:47.32 of American public policy by a religious expectation 00:03:47.36\00:03:51.16 and it's not good. 00:03:51.19\00:03:53.73 Further, going back a little bit further, 00:03:53.76\00:03:56.46 the capital of Israel, 00:03:56.50\00:04:00.44 or Israel's capital was recognized 00:04:00.47\00:04:02.57 by the US as Jerusalem. 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.77 But that's not the way 00:04:05.81\00:04:07.24 the UN has treated it in the past. 00:04:07.28\00:04:09.28 That's not the way 00:04:09.31\00:04:12.21 the international community have allowed it. 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.12 That's sort of where it's been heading 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.35 but they know that that's an incendiary determination. 00:04:16.38\00:04:19.72 But again, the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem 00:04:19.75\00:04:25.29 and stated that they recognize this as the capital. 00:04:25.33\00:04:28.23 It's not that we don't have the right to do so. 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.63 But it's an irresponsible act informed almost totally 00:04:30.67\00:04:34.74 by a particular religious vision in a country 00:04:34.77\00:04:39.21 that while it was at its founding, 00:04:39.24\00:04:41.04 made up overwhelmingly of Protestants, 00:04:41.08\00:04:47.02 Christian Protestants, 00:04:47.05\00:04:49.22 was never an adjunct to church theology 00:04:49.25\00:04:53.15 or church prophecy. 00:04:53.19\00:04:55.09 And in fact, it's been a certain protection 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.69 against religious visionaries. 00:04:57.73\00:05:00.23 And ironically, it facilitated a vibrant, 00:05:00.26\00:05:04.00 dynamic religious life 00:05:04.03\00:05:05.37 for any number of religious factions, 00:05:05.40\00:05:07.90 because they know 00:05:07.94\00:05:09.27 that the government's not tilting 00:05:09.30\00:05:10.81 one way or the other, 00:05:10.84\00:05:12.31 or as the Baptist write in to Jefferson 00:05:12.34\00:05:17.98 were a little afraid that if they weren't protected, 00:05:18.01\00:05:22.55 you know, another religious group would harass them. 00:05:22.58\00:05:25.92 And that's when Thomas Jefferson explained, 00:05:25.95\00:05:28.12 "Oh, no, wait, this is secular. 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.03 It's for freedom of religion for all people, 00:05:30.06\00:05:32.09 separation of church and state." 00:05:32.13\00:05:35.50 From the very beginning, 00:05:35.53\00:05:36.87 this administration more than most, 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.60 and there's no question without, 00:05:38.63\00:05:41.84 not trying to pick on this administration, 00:05:41.87\00:05:44.21 it's always been a temptation in American life 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.64 to mix religious sensibility with civil government, 00:05:46.68\00:05:50.71 but it was a little more marked than usual. 00:05:50.75\00:05:53.72 With this one, the Jeff Sessions, 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.48 the first Attorney General, 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.09 within hours of him being named as Attorney General 00:05:58.12\00:06:02.49 said, publicly and boldly, 00:06:02.52\00:06:04.79 he did not believe 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.26 in a separation of church and state. 00:06:06.29\00:06:09.33 Well, you know, like I said in the editorial, 00:06:09.36\00:06:11.13 they dance around it 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.50 but the dynamic of a separation of church and state 00:06:12.53\00:06:15.84 is exactly 00:06:15.87\00:06:17.21 what the First Amendment is talking about. 00:06:17.24\00:06:19.91 So I mean, where have we come 00:06:19.94\00:06:21.81 if a top law and order official is put in 00:06:21.84\00:06:27.48 and first thing he says, 00:06:27.52\00:06:28.85 he doesn't believe in part of the Constitution. 00:06:28.88\00:06:32.05 And that has been repeated over and over, 00:06:32.09\00:06:34.22 and the way I describe it, what we're living through now, 00:06:34.26\00:06:37.86 and certainly we're not living through persecution, 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.10 America remains, United States remains, 00:06:40.13\00:06:43.47 practically speaking, 00:06:43.50\00:06:46.43 easily one of the most free 00:06:46.47\00:06:49.50 and enabling countries in the world 00:06:49.54\00:06:54.18 for religious practice, 00:06:54.21\00:06:55.78 but what we're seeing right now is a clear shift 00:06:55.81\00:06:59.75 from a generalized religious freedom, 00:06:59.78\00:07:02.38 where every... 00:07:02.42\00:07:04.85 It's not the groups, it's the individual, 00:07:04.89\00:07:06.79 every individual is free 00:07:06.82\00:07:09.99 to choose their faith commitment 00:07:10.03\00:07:12.73 or none at all. 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.10 Change it as they want, speak about it, 00:07:14.13\00:07:16.36 it's their own business. 00:07:16.40\00:07:17.87 We're moving from that to a dynamic, 00:07:17.90\00:07:20.60 where certain faith groups 00:07:20.64\00:07:21.97 are actually under a certain frown, 00:07:22.00\00:07:24.97 and certain groups are under a special smile of favor 00:07:25.01\00:07:30.08 and I would call it religious entitlement. 00:07:30.11\00:07:34.85 A certain religious viewpoint is entitled and empowered 00:07:34.88\00:07:38.95 and as the framers of the Constitution 00:07:38.99\00:07:41.82 pointed out, 00:07:41.86\00:07:43.19 and more than one of them that if we do that, 00:07:43.22\00:07:45.46 it's not a long process to where those not so favored 00:07:45.49\00:07:51.03 will be persecuted. 00:07:51.07\00:07:52.60 That's the present threat we face. 00:07:52.63\00:07:55.94 Something else that is not often spoken about, 00:07:55.97\00:07:59.24 it's gone, 00:07:59.27\00:08:00.61 the discussion's gone very quiet. 00:08:00.64\00:08:02.58 But this administration came into power. 00:08:02.61\00:08:05.58 As I said in the editorial 00:08:05.61\00:08:06.95 with a very high principal purpose, 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.55 I believe, to support religious freedom. 00:08:09.58\00:08:12.95 But since this administration generally hasn't seen, 00:08:12.99\00:08:17.56 fit to inquire deeply into it, 00:08:17.59\00:08:19.79 they've accepted the views of a religious coalition 00:08:19.83\00:08:23.30 that they're enabling. 00:08:23.33\00:08:24.67 And so, you know, 00:08:24.70\00:08:27.27 it could work badly. 00:08:27.30\00:08:30.91 But very early on, they made the statement 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.78 that they would change the Johnson Amendment. 00:08:33.81\00:08:37.35 I don't believe it's been changed yet. 00:08:37.38\00:08:40.72 The political gain from such a stance 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.55 has been had and maybe nothing will come from it. 00:08:43.59\00:08:46.52 But still, the mere claim is dangerous. 00:08:46.55\00:08:49.12 The Johnson Amendment was put into action as a result, 00:08:49.16\00:08:54.26 it's called Johnson because it arose 00:08:54.30\00:08:57.10 after Lyndon Johnson in a reelection bid 00:08:57.13\00:08:59.87 was offended that certain political factions 00:08:59.90\00:09:03.51 and religious factions opposed him, 00:09:03.54\00:09:06.84 and he... 00:09:06.88\00:09:08.21 When nonprofits and religious organizations opposed him, 00:09:08.24\00:09:11.15 and so there was an amendment added to a bill 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.95 that said the churches and nonprofits 00:09:14.98\00:09:17.55 are not to involve themselves in political activity, 00:09:17.59\00:09:21.42 very reasonable 00:09:21.46\00:09:22.79 under a separation of church and state. 00:09:22.82\00:09:25.73 Unfortunately, it was put into place in a, 00:09:25.76\00:09:29.46 you know, tit for tat political situation, 00:09:29.50\00:09:32.23 but now there's a claim made 00:09:32.27\00:09:34.40 that this must be swept away as soon as possible 00:09:34.44\00:09:36.91 and allow the churches to be politically active. 00:09:36.94\00:09:40.51 That is the worst sin that a state can ever allow. 00:09:40.54\00:09:45.55 In the Medieval Ages, the Medieval Church, 00:09:45.58\00:09:49.18 Catholic Church, but it was the singular Medieval Church. 00:09:49.22\00:09:52.65 It was empowered politically to the ends degree 00:09:52.69\00:09:56.46 and persecution, 00:09:56.49\00:09:57.89 and political horrors eventuated from that. 00:09:57.93\00:10:03.26 So to do away with the Johnson Amendment, 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.37 even though it was flawed in its beginning, 00:10:05.40\00:10:07.30 its root concept is exactly right. 00:10:07.34\00:10:10.51 There should be a separation of church and state, 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.27 but it's going to be swept away to believe public statements. 00:10:13.31\00:10:16.61 It was added to a bill recently and then at midnight, 00:10:16.64\00:10:22.58 surreptitiously removed, and I don't know why, maybe, 00:10:22.62\00:10:26.45 you know, a little caution at the last minute. 00:10:26.49\00:10:30.06 But again, the intent has not been revoked. 00:10:30.09\00:10:32.69 It seems to be an empowerment 00:10:32.73\00:10:34.93 of politically active religious factions. 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.33 And all I could say to those factions, 00:10:37.37\00:10:39.70 which is the root issue. 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.44 Don't seek solutions through political action, 00:10:42.47\00:10:45.37 seek spiritual solutions, seek personal godliness, 00:10:45.41\00:10:49.11 seek evangelization of the people again, 00:10:49.14\00:10:51.91 and as many religious right people 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.48 that I used to work with used to pray, 00:10:54.52\00:10:56.69 "Lord, please heal our nation." 00:10:56.72\00:10:59.79
