Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:28.86\00:00:30.39 This is a program 00:00:30.43\00:00:32.06 bringing you thought provoking insights 00:00:32.09\00:00:34.40 and information on religious liberty 00:00:34.43\00:00:36.70 through the ages 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.07 right up to our present situation, 00:00:38.10\00:00:40.64 and in the United States and often around the world. 00:00:40.67\00:00:43.91 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty Magazine, 00:00:43.94\00:00:47.51 and I want to talk to you 00:00:47.54\00:00:49.91 about sort of ancient events. 00:00:49.94\00:00:54.32 I said through the ages. 00:00:54.35\00:00:55.68 Let's go really back to 600 years BC, 00:00:55.72\00:01:00.19 because I want to talk about Daniel 00:01:00.22\00:01:02.66 and his friends, 00:01:02.69\00:01:04.03 and their captivity in Babylon, 00:01:04.06\00:01:06.43 the capital of the known world at that time. 00:01:06.46\00:01:11.17 When you read the history there, 00:01:11.20\00:01:12.80 God's people, of course, have been delivered by... 00:01:12.83\00:01:16.20 I don't think God delivered them up directly, 00:01:16.24\00:01:18.71 but God warned that by their neglect 00:01:18.74\00:01:22.44 of some of the precepts 00:01:22.48\00:01:23.81 that He'd laid down through His prophets 00:01:23.85\00:01:25.21 that they were likely to be exposed 00:01:25.25\00:01:31.62 to the negative things around them 00:01:31.65\00:01:32.99 and that included conquest and captivity. 00:01:33.02\00:01:36.46 So King Nebuchadnezzar, the leader of... 00:01:36.49\00:01:39.73 The king of Babylon came sweeping in, 00:01:39.76\00:01:42.53 destroyed the city, 00:01:42.56\00:01:44.57 killed many people 00:01:44.60\00:01:45.93 and took many captives and hostages. 00:01:45.97\00:01:48.00 And so Daniel and his three friends 00:01:48.04\00:01:49.97 found themselves 00:01:50.01\00:01:51.34 probably as members of the ruling families 00:01:51.37\00:01:55.21 found themselves in Babylon 00:01:55.24\00:01:56.98 probably too found themselves emasculated 00:01:57.01\00:01:59.95 so they could better suit the king's purposes. 00:01:59.98\00:02:02.58 I remember being really troubled by that 00:02:02.62\00:02:04.92 as a young guy, but it's almost certainly so. 00:02:04.95\00:02:07.69 That was the standard practice 00:02:07.72\00:02:10.26 to remove any possibility of other affections, 00:02:10.29\00:02:14.43 also to remove the possibility 00:02:14.46\00:02:16.20 that they would breed with the conquerors. 00:02:16.23\00:02:18.37 They didn't want that, 00:02:18.40\00:02:19.87 and that they wanted 00:02:19.90\00:02:21.24 to easy facile servants of the king. 00:02:21.27\00:02:26.64 And we know that Daniel and his friends 00:02:26.68\00:02:28.98 were put under the command of Arioch, 00:02:29.01\00:02:32.05 I think his name was the head of the... 00:02:32.08\00:02:33.98 of the eunuchs. 00:02:37.19\00:02:39.82 And so this, the training began. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.62 I want to talk about just several incidents 00:02:42.66\00:02:46.39 in the story that's outlined there. 00:02:46.43\00:02:48.60 But to put it into context, 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.07 remember where Babylon was 00:02:50.10\00:02:53.40 because we know where, now where the site of Babylon is. 00:02:53.44\00:02:57.24 It's just about 60 miles down the Euphrates River 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.68 from the present day city of Baghdad. 00:03:00.71\00:03:03.58 You know, Gulf War 2 00:03:03.61\00:03:05.28 taught us a lot about geography, 00:03:05.31\00:03:06.92 but maybe people forget this biblical aspect of it. 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.39 I remember Mark Twain, a humorist of sorts. 00:03:10.42\00:03:15.09 I grew up reading 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.46 Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. 00:03:16.49\00:03:18.39 Not so funny, but very good for young people. 00:03:18.43\00:03:20.90 But Mark Twain was alive 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.40 at the time of the US military intervention 00:03:23.43\00:03:26.23 in the Philippines. 00:03:26.27\00:03:27.60 And he said once, darkly, he says, 00:03:27.64\00:03:30.37 "Foreign wars are God's way of teaching geography 00:03:30.41\00:03:33.64 to Americans." 00:03:33.68\00:03:35.21 And I noticed the other day, our President, 00:03:35.24\00:03:38.91 this is before the election, so President Trump, 00:03:38.95\00:03:43.72 I don't think himself 00:03:43.75\00:03:45.79 always the greatest on geography, 00:03:45.82\00:03:47.46 but he thought he had a reporter recently, 00:03:47.49\00:03:49.86 they got a bit snarky with him. 00:03:49.89\00:03:52.19 And so he says, you know, "Point on this map to Ukraine. 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.50 Point to Ukraine" 00:03:55.53\00:03:56.87 And the woman was able to so he got so mad, 00:03:56.90\00:03:59.50 he dismissed it but an unfortunate majority, 00:03:59.53\00:04:03.41 probably people are not too clear 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.24 on where things are. 00:04:05.27\00:04:06.61 But I'm telling you, Babylon, 00:04:06.64\00:04:08.24 just down the river from Baghdad, 00:04:08.28\00:04:10.65 and at that time 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.01 it was the greatest city in the world. 00:04:12.05\00:04:13.38 The hieroglyphics we have from that era 00:04:16.35\00:04:18.29 show an advanced civilization, 00:04:18.32\00:04:20.46 the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were... 00:04:20.49\00:04:23.83 While they're gone, they've been accounted 00:04:23.86\00:04:25.69 by contemporary references and projected forward 00:04:25.73\00:04:28.86 is one of the great 00:04:28.90\00:04:30.23 seven great wonders of the world. 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.97 This was a moment 00:04:33.00\00:04:34.80 when these young Jewish guys 00:04:34.84\00:04:37.44 taken from a relatively obscure city 00:04:37.47\00:04:39.64 and taken to the New York City of their time, 00:04:39.67\00:04:42.61 or let's say, the Paris, 00:04:42.64\00:04:44.71 I know there's some overseas viewers, 00:04:44.75\00:04:47.32 so it's not just New York. 00:04:47.35\00:04:49.42 But this was an amazing shift. 00:04:49.45\00:04:51.55 And they're in the middle of this pagan, 00:04:51.59\00:04:56.09 non-Jewish culture, 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.69 they were ready and able 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.56 and forced to stand by their spiritual guns 00:05:01.60\00:05:04.80 and witness to that nation. 00:05:04.83\00:05:06.70 The singular story 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.94 that I think is important is 00:05:08.97\00:05:12.27 after Daniel had interpreted the dream for the king, 00:05:12.31\00:05:15.78 which is quite a story in itself, 00:05:15.81\00:05:17.68 the king misunderstanding, or by his personality, 00:05:17.71\00:05:21.75 misinterpreting the dream as applying to him, 00:05:21.78\00:05:26.82 rather than explaining the kingdoms through the ages, 00:05:26.86\00:05:30.99 he built on the Plains of Dura, 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.60 about an 80 foot statue, all of gold, 00:05:33.63\00:05:36.30 I'm sure covered in gold 00:05:36.33\00:05:37.77 because there's barely enough gold in the world 00:05:37.80\00:05:40.10 to make such a statue. 00:05:40.14\00:05:42.30 You know that all the gold in the world 00:05:42.34\00:05:43.87 could fit into a warehouse in a cube. 00:05:43.91\00:05:47.61 There's not as much of it as people imagine. 00:05:47.64\00:05:50.01 But a gold covered statue 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.28 was erected and the king demanded 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.38 that everybody bowed down to it when the music played. 00:05:54.42\00:06:00.06 Daniel seems to have been away, 00:06:00.09\00:06:02.42 but his three friends were there. 00:06:02.46\00:06:04.66 And when the music played they stood. 00:06:04.69\00:06:07.70 And the king, obviously knowing them 00:06:07.73\00:06:10.13 and obviously, being friendly toward them, 00:06:10.17\00:06:14.14 said contrary to the instructions 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.00 before that, 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.44 which were said, you know, you're going to be killed 00:06:17.47\00:06:19.04 if you don't bow down. 00:06:19.07\00:06:20.41 He says, you know, "Let's play the music once more. 00:06:20.44\00:06:23.38 Another chance, boys. 00:06:23.41\00:06:26.21 If you bow down now, 00:06:26.25\00:06:27.72 all will be forgiven and they said, 00:06:27.75\00:06:29.15 "King, we don't need to think carefully 00:06:29.18\00:06:32.25 about answering you in this matter. 00:06:32.29\00:06:34.99 Our God is able to save us from you. 00:06:35.02\00:06:37.39 We're not under your power." 00:06:37.43\00:06:38.96 But they said "Even if He didn't redeem us 00:06:38.99\00:06:41.73 from this punishment, 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.10 we're not going to obey what you said." 00:06:43.13\00:06:45.23 This is an amazing denial of a secular king 00:06:45.27\00:06:49.50 claiming their loyalty. 00:06:49.54\00:06:51.71 And he said to them, in case they had any question, 00:06:51.74\00:06:53.51 he says, 00:06:53.54\00:06:54.88 "Why don't you respect me or my gods?" 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.15 He put the two together. 00:06:57.18\00:07:00.45 Which by the way is a great temptation 00:07:00.48\00:07:02.75 at the moment in the United States. 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.12 Church and state, long separate 00:07:05.15\00:07:06.96 are coming together very quickly, 00:07:06.99\00:07:08.96 where to be an American, 00:07:08.99\00:07:10.59 a good American is being equated 00:07:10.63\00:07:12.23 especially by the religious right, 00:07:12.26\00:07:14.16 with sort of the godly, Protestant thinking. 00:07:14.20\00:07:18.73 And, you know, 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.10 that they might have small amount of history to it, 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.77 but it's not a good dynamic. 00:07:22.80\00:07:26.68 So the king was not impressed when they refused. 00:07:26.71\00:07:32.01 And so he sent them into the fire. 00:07:32.05\00:07:34.58 And there in the fire, 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.52 he saw them walking around and he says, 00:07:36.55\00:07:38.52 "Didn't we put three men into the fire, 00:07:38.55\00:07:39.89 now there's four. 00:07:39.92\00:07:41.26 One like the Son of the God." 00:07:41.29\00:07:42.72 He didn't say like God, just a divine personage. 00:07:42.76\00:07:46.19 So it was very obvious 00:07:46.23\00:07:50.23 that God was working even in that pagan city, 00:07:50.27\00:07:53.77 that they were redeemed 00:07:53.80\00:07:55.50 from the secular power of the king, 00:07:55.54\00:07:58.11 that cause and effect 00:07:58.14\00:07:59.47 were not quite operating as normal, 00:07:59.51\00:08:02.34 that the faithful could be redeemed. 00:08:02.38\00:08:05.21 Then Daniel himself a little later, 00:08:05.25\00:08:07.88 when he was... 00:08:07.92\00:08:09.25 well respected the king, given special authority, 00:08:09.28\00:08:12.49 we don't quite know what his job was, 00:08:12.52\00:08:14.12 but he was known by the king working closely with him. 00:08:14.16\00:08:17.49 And the political enemies conspired to set the king up 00:08:17.53\00:08:21.43 to trick him into condemning Daniel 00:08:21.46\00:08:24.37 for praying to his God, rather than to the king. 00:08:24.40\00:08:28.00 And Daniel was thrown into the lions' den 00:08:28.04\00:08:31.74 as the punishment required, and delivered. 00:08:31.77\00:08:36.14 And he said to the king, he says, you know, 00:08:36.18\00:08:38.05 "My God has delivered me from the power of the lions." 00:08:38.08\00:08:41.28 I thought about this a number of times 00:08:44.39\00:08:48.72 and relating it to our day, 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.63 I'm reminded of something that Ellen White, 00:08:50.66\00:08:56.30 a young woman 00:08:56.33\00:08:57.67 who with her husband, James White, 00:08:57.70\00:09:00.64 both of them were part of the Millerite movement. 00:09:00.67\00:09:03.27 And after the disappointment they remained faithful, 00:09:03.30\00:09:05.74 studied their Bibles with others, 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.28 realized that the date setting was not good. 00:09:07.31\00:09:09.71 In fact, Ellen White once said, 00:09:09.74\00:09:11.11 "No time prophecy after 1844." 00:09:11.15\00:09:13.95 So, Adventists, don't set dates. 00:09:13.98\00:09:16.48 But we came out of a date setting phenomenon, 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.65 there's no question. 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.02 And Ellen White wrote to Adventists early on, 00:09:21.06\00:09:26.13 when they believed 00:09:26.16\00:09:27.83 and I still believe that God was influencing 00:09:27.86\00:09:30.47 what she said and did 00:09:30.50\00:09:31.87 that they were portentous dreams, 00:09:31.90\00:09:34.30 let's just put it that way. 00:09:34.34\00:09:35.90 She shared a dream she had in the early... 00:09:35.94\00:09:40.54 In the late 1800s rather. 00:09:40.58\00:09:43.01 And I want to relate this to Daniel. 00:09:43.04\00:09:46.31 Not that everything happened 600 years ago. 00:09:46.35\00:09:49.05 Six hundred years ago the fires could not burn them. 00:09:49.08\00:09:53.66 Six hundred years ago, 00:09:53.69\00:09:55.66 the lions' mouth was not full of ravaging teeth, 00:09:55.69\00:10:00.23 they were shut by the angels. 00:10:00.26\00:10:03.47 In our day, there is threat on every hand. 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.70 Even as I'm dictating this, 00:10:06.74\00:10:10.07 the Coronavirus is freaking the world out, 00:10:10.11\00:10:13.81 we don't know, a month, two months from now, 00:10:13.84\00:10:16.78 whether this will be another black death, 00:10:16.81\00:10:19.55 another plague, another massive die off or not. 00:10:19.58\00:10:22.78 But we do know that in our era, 00:10:22.82\00:10:25.75 those sort of things hang over us as a grand threat. 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.99 And we do know that when such things happen, 00:10:29.02\00:10:32.19 other bizarre social phenomena follow, 00:10:32.23\00:10:35.76 there's no question. 00:10:35.80\00:10:39.43 The inquisitions in Europe 00:10:39.47\00:10:42.64 followed hard on the heels of the plague 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.91 that wiped out about a third of Europe. 00:10:45.94\00:10:48.14 One thing breeds another. 00:10:48.18\00:10:50.78 And Ellen White wrote something 00:10:50.81\00:10:52.15 that I want to share with our larger audience. 00:10:52.18\00:10:54.25 It was given to Adventist. 00:10:54.28\00:10:56.45 The early group of believers, 00:10:56.48\00:10:59.02 and you can believe the dream or not, 00:10:59.05\00:11:01.02 but what the message she got out of it, 00:11:01.06\00:11:03.39 I think is something for our day. 00:11:03.43\00:11:05.76 This is what she wrote. 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.60 It's not really a normally published thing. 00:11:07.63\00:11:09.76 It's in... 00:11:09.80\00:11:11.13 called Manuscript releases, 00:11:11.17\00:11:12.50 which is circulated but not in any book per Se. 00:11:12.53\00:11:15.50 She says, "In the night, 00:11:15.54\00:11:17.61 I was I thought, in a room, 00:11:17.64\00:11:21.04 but not in my own house. 00:11:21.08\00:11:22.41 I was in a city where I knew not. 00:11:25.28\00:11:28.98 And I heard explosion after explosion." 00:11:29.02\00:11:32.95 I remember first reading this around the time of 9/11. 00:11:32.99\00:11:38.53 And there's no question that from a religious point, 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.60 liberty point of view, 00:11:40.63\00:11:41.96 things have not been the same since 9/11. 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.53 Among other legal shifts, the Patriot Act, 00:11:45.57\00:11:49.77 brought a broad array of restrictions 00:11:49.80\00:11:52.87 on individual freedom 00:11:52.91\00:11:56.61 and oversight on individual action 00:11:56.64\00:11:59.15 that really is against 00:11:59.18\00:12:01.22 the very principles of the constitution 00:12:01.25\00:12:03.65 that protect, 00:12:03.69\00:12:05.02 supposed to protect the privacy. 00:12:05.05\00:12:07.46 Since 9/11, 00:12:07.49\00:12:08.82 also the religious deck has been stacked, 00:12:08.86\00:12:12.29 where we see 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.10 religious fundamentalists of one sort 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.03 bringing most of these terrorist actions to us. 00:12:16.06\00:12:19.03 But the authorities not knowing much 00:12:19.07\00:12:22.00 about any religion 00:12:22.04\00:12:23.37 have come to the conclusion that 00:12:23.41\00:12:27.78 fanatical religious extremists of all types are dangerous. 00:12:27.81\00:12:32.31 Or to put it another way, 00:12:32.35\00:12:34.25 it's been stated to believe your Bible deeply 00:12:34.28\00:12:40.22 so that you'll order your life after it makes you an extremist 00:12:40.26\00:12:45.59 and a fundamentalist. 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.13 So these are dangerous times. 00:12:48.16\00:12:50.23 And I first noticed this quote on 9/11, 00:12:50.27\00:12:54.27 when the buildings exploded with the collisions with the... 00:12:54.30\00:12:58.07 The airline has collided with these two buildings, 00:12:58.11\00:13:00.51 when they collapsed, 00:13:00.54\00:13:03.11 the shock to New York City and indeed the whole country, 00:13:03.14\00:13:06.51 the whole world was severe. 00:13:06.55\00:13:08.48 They have these towers of complacency, 00:13:08.52\00:13:10.62 these Hanging Gardens of Babylon 00:13:10.65\00:13:12.75 come crashing down into the middle of a city 00:13:12.79\00:13:16.22 where people were running for their lives 00:13:16.26\00:13:17.96 and screaming with horror. 00:13:17.99\00:13:21.16 It's something that certainly in our lifetimes, 00:13:21.20\00:13:23.33 we will never see again. 00:13:23.37\00:13:26.43 It was... 00:13:26.47\00:13:27.80 As one writer 00:13:27.84\00:13:29.17 in a French magazine pointed out, 00:13:29.20\00:13:30.67 he says, "It was real." 00:13:30.71\00:13:32.41 But he says "It was worse than real. 00:13:32.44\00:13:35.38 It was symbolic." 00:13:35.41\00:13:36.91 And symbolically modern complacency, 00:13:36.95\00:13:40.95 these structures of our modern technology 00:13:40.98\00:13:44.65 came crashing down, 00:13:44.69\00:13:46.45 and the threat was visceral, and real, and immediate. 00:13:46.49\00:13:50.36 And we were not protected by distance as we imagine. 00:13:50.39\00:13:55.13 We're not protected like the drone pilots, 00:13:55.16\00:13:57.63 they sit in front of a screen, 00:13:57.67\00:13:59.13 half a world away 00:13:59.17\00:14:00.50 from where they're zapping people to death, 00:14:00.54\00:14:03.04 all of that affection disappeared in a moment. 00:14:03.07\00:14:06.54 And we saw people living in New York City, 00:14:06.57\00:14:09.24 in the middle of a city, plummeting to their deaths, 00:14:09.28\00:14:11.75 rather than to burn and to fall with the buildings, 00:14:11.78\00:14:14.38 an amazing moment. 00:14:14.42\00:14:16.62 And after a short break, 00:14:16.65\00:14:17.99 I'll come back and I'll finish this quote. 00:14:18.02\00:14:19.79 An amazing quote, 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.22 which shows not only a perception of an event, 00:14:21.26\00:14:26.23 possibly the event that we saw, 00:14:26.26\00:14:28.10 but how we should respond to this. 00:14:28.13\00:14:30.07 Stay with us. I'll be back. 00:14:30.10\00:14:31.87
