Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 And before the break, I was talking about 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.20 significant changes in the Roman Catholic Church 00:00:05.23\00:00:07.90 and how it relates to other churches 00:00:07.94\00:00:09.60 and governments because of Vatican II. 00:00:09.64\00:00:13.61 Now I'd like to just go through some documents, 00:00:13.64\00:00:16.75 but before documents remind you 00:00:16.78\00:00:19.31 if you've forgotten that was big at the time, 00:00:19.35\00:00:23.02 Pope Benedict when he was first 00:00:23.05\00:00:26.15 placed in that office, made a lot of news, 00:00:26.19\00:00:29.12 very negative in the Muslim world 00:00:29.16\00:00:31.29 by a speech that he gave at Regensburg University, 00:00:31.33\00:00:36.03 where he spoken 00:00:36.06\00:00:37.97 or where he taught for some time, 00:00:38.00\00:00:40.30 I think it was significant and perhaps chosen 00:00:40.34\00:00:42.80 because it was also a major center 00:00:42.84\00:00:45.94 of the Counter-Reformation, the Catholic pushback 00:00:45.97\00:00:48.81 against the Reformation 00:00:48.84\00:00:50.35 'cause I've learned that nothing is by chance, 00:00:50.38\00:00:53.15 in the way the times and the places 00:00:53.18\00:00:55.95 and the context that Rome 00:00:55.98\00:00:57.39 chooses for these speeches and documents. 00:00:57.42\00:01:00.82 And he got into trouble 00:01:00.86\00:01:02.46 because he cited the historic conversation 00:01:02.49\00:01:04.63 between a Byzantine Emperor and the Iranian Muslim 00:01:04.66\00:01:10.03 General besieging Constantinople 00:01:10.07\00:01:14.90 as it was then, now it's Istanbul 00:01:14.94\00:01:17.84 and eventually felt to the Muslims. 00:01:17.87\00:01:19.94 And they got to discussing violence in religion 00:01:19.97\00:01:22.68 and the assumption in the discussion 00:01:22.71\00:01:24.18 was that Islam was violent. 00:01:24.21\00:01:25.98 And when that speech was broadcast, 00:01:26.01\00:01:29.55 the Islamic world started rioting right left 00:01:29.58\00:01:31.89 and center, which is sort of childish. 00:01:31.92\00:01:34.36 You're accused of violence, 00:01:34.39\00:01:35.72 so you become violent in objection. 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.89 But most people didn't notice the real speech. 00:01:38.93\00:01:42.56 That was just the setup. 00:01:42.60\00:01:44.33 He didn't think he'd get into trouble from a historic, 00:01:44.37\00:01:47.67 factual discussion. 00:01:47.70\00:01:50.11 It was a setup for his discussion 00:01:50.14\00:01:52.64 of violence within Christianity. 00:01:52.67\00:01:55.98 And he said Christianity too was once violent 00:01:56.01\00:02:00.78 until it adopted Hellenistic rationality. 00:02:00.82\00:02:04.19 And I could say until it adopted the ways 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.59 of the empire and adopted worldliness, 00:02:06.62\00:02:10.66 but if you accept his logic, then it was rather troubling 00:02:10.69\00:02:15.23 where he ended up because if it was once violent, 00:02:15.26\00:02:18.63 became nonviolent with Hellenistic rationality, 00:02:18.67\00:02:22.40 and then he gave three reasons 00:02:22.44\00:02:25.01 as to an incipient threat 00:02:25.04\00:02:26.54 of violence in Christianity again. 00:02:26.57\00:02:28.91 The last two, which is variations 00:02:28.94\00:02:31.38 on his preoccupation at the time 00:02:31.41\00:02:33.78 that secularism was bringing violence, 00:02:33.82\00:02:36.45 which I think is a hard, hard line to follow. 00:02:36.48\00:02:41.22 But his first point was ominous. 00:02:41.26\00:02:43.56 He said the reformers, this is exactly quote 00:02:43.59\00:02:47.80 as I can remember, 00:02:47.83\00:02:49.16 "The reformers by their insistence 00:02:49.20\00:02:51.83 on Sola Scriptura exposed Christianity 00:02:51.87\00:02:56.37 again to violence." 00:02:56.40\00:02:59.04 And this is post 9/11 when we know that 00:02:59.07\00:03:03.21 certain Islamic fanatics reading very selected 00:03:03.24\00:03:08.38 and self-serving passages from the Quran, 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.39 and listening to no other logic, 00:03:11.42\00:03:12.99 no other rationality, 00:03:13.02\00:03:14.36 no other humanity, other than, you know, 00:03:14.39\00:03:16.93 Allah wills it, we're willing to fly 00:03:16.96\00:03:18.89 into buildings and destroy themselves 00:03:18.93\00:03:20.60 and kill as many other people as possible. 00:03:20.63\00:03:22.93 The analogy is scary to say now that Christianity 00:03:22.96\00:03:26.80 through the Sola Scriptura model 00:03:26.84\00:03:29.50 of the Reformation, in other words, 00:03:29.54\00:03:32.24 Protestants are essentially 00:03:32.27\00:03:35.54 the next most violent possibility 00:03:35.58\00:03:38.01 in our modern world. 00:03:38.05\00:03:39.55 Horrible, not borne out by any facts, but, you know, 00:03:39.58\00:03:43.62 facts don't determine things as much as they used to. 00:03:43.65\00:03:46.72 So, you know, that was most interesting 00:03:46.76\00:03:48.52 and particularly from then on, 00:03:48.56\00:03:50.43 I started watching 00:03:50.46\00:03:52.23 the documents coming out of Rome. 00:03:52.26\00:03:53.60 For example, 00:03:53.63\00:03:54.96 this is all within the last 25 years 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.33 right up till the present. 00:03:56.36\00:03:58.03 There was a document 00:03:58.07\00:03:59.40 out of Rome called Ad Tuendam Fidem. 00:03:59.43\00:04:01.44 These are papal documents to defend the faith. 00:04:01.47\00:04:04.97 They were having trouble with theologians 00:04:05.01\00:04:07.14 who were denying both the primacy of the pope 00:04:07.18\00:04:10.18 and the inspiration of the Bible 00:04:10.21\00:04:11.58 and as well as other 00:04:11.61\00:04:12.95 foundational aspects of Christianity, 00:04:12.98\00:04:14.95 and they need to deal with them. 00:04:14.98\00:04:16.32 The document outlines that, 00:04:16.35\00:04:18.39 it said how they were dealing with theologians, 00:04:18.42\00:04:20.99 then it said how they were dealing 00:04:21.02\00:04:22.66 with those that were problems within the church, 00:04:22.69\00:04:25.39 and then it ended by saying, "Whoever believes 00:04:25.43\00:04:29.40 what the magisterium of the church 00:04:29.43\00:04:32.03 have rejected or rejects 00:04:32.07\00:04:36.17 what the magisterium of the church 00:04:36.20\00:04:38.44 has recommended is to be punished 00:04:38.47\00:04:40.38 with an appropriate penalty." 00:04:40.41\00:04:43.24 And to me, that's the language of the Middle Ages, 00:04:43.28\00:04:45.75 where the church 00:04:45.78\00:04:47.12 has a preeminent political position. 00:04:47.15\00:04:48.92 And if you offend the church, 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.32 they hand you off to the state to be punished. 00:04:50.35\00:04:53.46 Very ominous language. 00:04:53.49\00:04:55.49 Then the next document that's significant, 00:04:55.52\00:04:58.46 that Seventh-day Adventist 00:04:58.49\00:04:59.83 I know pay great attention to was called Dies Domini, 00:04:59.86\00:05:03.50 the Lord's Day. 00:05:03.53\00:05:06.60 This specified or the whole document 00:05:06.63\00:05:10.21 was talking about the Sabbath, 00:05:10.24\00:05:12.77 and it made no attempt 00:05:12.81\00:05:14.61 to dodge the obvious biblical reality 00:05:14.64\00:05:17.48 that the Sabbath was given by God 00:05:17.51\00:05:19.68 and The Ten Commandments 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.05 and really in a larger Old Testament context 00:05:21.08\00:05:25.39 to all peoples as the seventh-day of the week, 00:05:25.42\00:05:30.09 requirement of God. 00:05:30.13\00:05:31.73 And in the past, I know Seventh-day Adventists 00:05:31.76\00:05:33.70 have been challenged 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.06 on some of their proof texts, not anymore. 00:05:35.10\00:05:36.93 The Roman Catholic Church adopted all of them, 00:05:36.97\00:05:40.04 no challenge. 00:05:40.07\00:05:41.40 It reinforced the seventh-day Sabbath 00:05:41.44\00:05:44.67 except about halfway through it said this, 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.84 "While the early Christians had no direct instruction 00:05:47.88\00:05:52.01 from the Lord, they felt that 00:05:52.05\00:05:53.98 they had the authority to change it to Sunday, 00:05:54.02\00:05:57.39 in celebration of the Lord's resurrection." 00:05:57.42\00:06:00.79 Very interesting admission, but at the same time, 00:06:00.82\00:06:04.59 an assertion of an inherited authority 00:06:04.63\00:06:08.60 because with Rome, as with governments, 00:06:08.63\00:06:11.43 but here we're talking about religion, 00:06:11.47\00:06:13.20 authority is everything 00:06:13.23\00:06:14.90 and they have assumed the authority, 00:06:14.94\00:06:16.81 the mantle, that, by their interpretation 00:06:16.84\00:06:19.14 was given to Peter, the authority that 00:06:19.17\00:06:21.14 they have granted to the church fathers. 00:06:21.18\00:06:23.71 And curiously, the derivative authority 00:06:23.75\00:06:26.88 from the magisterium, 00:06:26.92\00:06:28.28 the power given to the church 00:06:28.32\00:06:30.62 and the integrity of the church fathers 00:06:30.65\00:06:33.22 to the scriptures that they have collected. 00:06:33.25\00:06:36.59 So Sola Scriptura is offensive to them 00:06:36.62\00:06:39.23 because as I've often read on Catholic material, 00:06:39.26\00:06:42.23 they assembled these documents, they assembled them 00:06:42.26\00:06:45.53 so it's their authority that determines scripture, 00:06:45.57\00:06:48.64 not sort of the other way around 00:06:48.67\00:06:50.01 judging the church by scripture. 00:06:50.04\00:06:55.11 The next one, and maybe I'll end this program 00:06:55.14\00:06:58.31 in discussion of this 00:06:58.35\00:06:59.68 and continue on another program, 00:06:59.71\00:07:01.05 these are the documents. 00:07:01.08\00:07:02.42 The next document that really created a fuss 00:07:02.45\00:07:05.02 within the Christian community, 00:07:05.05\00:07:07.92 which at that point was quite enamored 00:07:07.96\00:07:09.82 with the idea of the ecumenical movement. 00:07:09.86\00:07:12.39 And some decades ago, 00:07:12.43\00:07:14.40 its stated aim was to sort of bring everyone together. 00:07:14.43\00:07:17.73 I can remember even in Australia in the 70s, 00:07:17.77\00:07:21.17 hearing, visiting church leaders, 00:07:21.20\00:07:22.54 Protestant and Catholic talking about 00:07:22.57\00:07:24.97 healing the rift within Christendom 00:07:25.01\00:07:26.78 and coming back to the Mother Church. 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.74 It's not really the way it's expressed now, 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.55 but it was then. 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.11 And quite some years ago now, 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.88 but I'd say maybe about 15 years ago, 00:07:35.92\00:07:39.69 they came out with a document 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.06 called memory and reconciliation. 00:07:41.09\00:07:43.53 And it was reported widely in the press 00:07:43.56\00:07:46.73 but not saying where it came from that they had apologized 00:07:46.76\00:07:50.93 for the inquisition, 00:07:50.97\00:07:52.30 for the persecution of the Jews, 00:07:52.33\00:07:54.37 for the Sack of Constantinople, 00:07:54.40\00:07:58.61 where they sent one of the Crusades to pillage 00:07:58.64\00:08:01.38 and attack the other half of the Christian Church. 00:08:01.41\00:08:05.51 You know, whole thing, 00:08:05.55\00:08:06.88 a series of things were apologize for, 00:08:06.92\00:08:08.88 but it says in the document, 00:08:08.92\00:08:10.79 is it really possible to ascribe guilt 00:08:10.82\00:08:13.32 to the actions of another age. 00:08:13.36\00:08:15.39 And then the clunker in the middle of the document 00:08:15.42\00:08:18.79 that really troubled me it says this, 00:08:18.83\00:08:21.36 "Just as Christ, holy and undefiled 00:08:21.40\00:08:24.30 and incapable of error took upon Himself 00:08:24.33\00:08:27.20 the sins of fallen human beings. 00:08:27.24\00:08:29.14 So the magisterium of the church, 00:08:29.17\00:08:33.04 holy and undefiled and incapable of error 00:08:33.07\00:08:36.31 will apologize for the acts of human beings." 00:08:36.34\00:08:41.52 Basically, that acted on its behalf. 00:08:41.55\00:08:44.72 The intent I think, was good, 00:08:44.75\00:08:46.45 but in so doing, 00:08:46.49\00:08:47.82 they reiterated this exceptionalism 00:08:47.86\00:08:50.03 that Rome has always had, 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.49 which is antithetical to true religious freedom. 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.76 And from my perspective if it's not easily synthesize 00:08:54.80\00:09:00.14 with Bible truth, 00:09:00.17\00:09:02.04 the concept in the Old Testament 00:09:02.07\00:09:04.47 and the New. 00:09:04.51\00:09:05.84 No priest, no delegate of God 00:09:05.87\00:09:10.01 has the right to say that I know everything. 00:09:10.05\00:09:13.15 Even Moses, the greatest prophets 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.45 before John the Baptist, 00:09:16.48\00:09:19.15 and after his death, he was taken to heaven, 00:09:19.19\00:09:22.42 but even Moses was held at fault 00:09:22.46\00:09:24.73 because he whacks the rock and says, 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.59 "Must I bring the water out of the rock." 00:09:26.63\00:09:30.97 So, you know, the key is to St. Peter, 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.40 however, that legitimately or illegitimately they got. 00:09:33.44\00:09:36.64 They don't confer this absolutism on Rome, 00:09:36.67\00:09:40.51 it's not to be. 00:09:40.54\00:09:41.88 And so it's troubling to me, in this post Reformation era 00:09:41.91\00:09:46.35 when Protestants are forgetting 00:09:46.38\00:09:47.98 what they were that Rome is reiterating 00:09:48.02\00:09:51.05 some of the bolder claims of a prior day. 00:09:51.09\00:09:55.59 And I must say that memory 00:09:55.62\00:10:00.10 and reconciliation was really quite a disappointing one, 00:10:00.13\00:10:04.83 but it ended on a strange level 00:10:04.87\00:10:08.80 because it says we have apologized. 00:10:08.84\00:10:11.34 Now Protestants should reciprocate 00:10:11.37\00:10:14.71 and apologize. 00:10:14.74\00:10:16.11 And thereby hangs the tail 00:10:16.14\00:10:18.25 because in reality 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.61 some of this has already happened. 00:10:19.65\00:10:21.45 The World Lutheran Federation 00:10:21.48\00:10:24.02 have had two agreements with Rome the first, 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.76 that the disagreement with Lutheran Rome 00:10:26.79\00:10:29.36 was sort of a mistake, a doctrinal misunderstanding. 00:10:29.39\00:10:32.79 And the second document said there is no longer 00:10:32.83\00:10:35.36 any impediment to full reunification. 00:10:35.40\00:10:39.57 We've come a long way in 500 years, 00:10:39.60\00:10:41.47 and not all of it good. 00:10:41.50\00:10:44.57 And while Rome has got an openness now 00:10:44.61\00:10:48.14 that we could have wished for, 00:10:48.18\00:10:49.94 at the time of the Reformation, 00:10:49.98\00:10:51.81 there are still some deep misunderstandings, 00:10:51.85\00:10:55.28 deep assumptions that at the end of the day, 00:10:55.32\00:10:58.69 it might work against continued religious liberty 00:10:58.72\00:11:01.92 and need to be kept fully in mind, 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.49 by all who are as that speech spoke badly 00:11:04.53\00:11:08.56 of all who are insisting on Sola Scriptura. 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.93
