Welcome back. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, I was talking or sharing from Spurgeon, 00:00:02.73\00:00:06.17 the Prince of Preachers as he was called. 00:00:06.20\00:00:09.00 Talking about how different Christians should be 00:00:09.04\00:00:12.64 from non-prophesying people of faith. 00:00:12.67\00:00:16.61 And, you know, this is a program 00:00:16.64\00:00:18.71 for religious liberty, 00:00:18.75\00:00:20.08 I'm not excluding other faiths from religious liberty. 00:00:20.12\00:00:24.05 We as Christians should defend everybody's right 00:00:24.09\00:00:28.32 to be wrong. 00:00:28.36\00:00:30.63 I think that's a good way to put it. 00:00:30.66\00:00:32.99 We're all creatures of a Creator. 00:00:33.03\00:00:35.66 And He gave us the power of choice 00:00:35.70\00:00:37.80 and who are we 00:00:37.83\00:00:39.30 to block that off from someone else 00:00:39.33\00:00:41.20 or if they make what we think is a wrong choice, 00:00:41.24\00:00:44.34 we can communicate to them, 00:00:44.37\00:00:46.04 but it's before between them and God. 00:00:46.07\00:00:49.24 But certainly as a Christian lives in this world, 00:00:49.28\00:00:52.15 we need to see that there is a difference 00:00:52.18\00:00:54.72 if we are truly born again, 00:00:54.75\00:00:57.65 dedicated Christians who are convinced 00:00:57.69\00:01:02.42 that the kingdom of God is coming. 00:01:02.46\00:01:04.49 And that whatever kingdoms exist here, 00:01:04.53\00:01:06.43 they're secondary because we're moving toward 00:01:06.46\00:01:08.70 that great and eternal kingdom of God. 00:01:08.73\00:01:12.20 I did quote a statement 00:01:12.23\00:01:13.77 by Ellen White to early Adventist 00:01:13.80\00:01:15.27 that far too many are inclined to think 00:01:15.30\00:01:17.71 too positively or too well of this present time. 00:01:17.74\00:01:23.58 With religious liberty, 00:01:23.61\00:01:24.95 we're talking often about persecution. 00:01:24.98\00:01:26.85 It troubled me a little bit, 00:01:26.88\00:01:28.22 very often we defined it in the negative 00:01:28.25\00:01:30.35 looking at the problems. 00:01:30.39\00:01:32.59 The restrictions in one country and another 00:01:32.62\00:01:35.46 and even in the United States, 00:01:35.49\00:01:36.96 which has a constitutional guarantee of... 00:01:36.99\00:01:41.26 Well, it doesn't say religious freedom 00:01:41.30\00:01:43.00 but a mechanism in the first amendment 00:01:43.03\00:01:44.83 that would clearly give a hands-off approach 00:01:44.87\00:01:48.00 from any government 00:01:48.04\00:01:49.37 and full freedom to practice your faith. 00:01:49.40\00:01:52.21 But we have some problems, 00:01:52.24\00:01:55.44 some legal problems in the workplace, 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.48 some assumptions of government control, 00:01:57.51\00:02:01.08 some blurring 00:02:01.12\00:02:02.75 of the distinction between church and state 00:02:02.78\00:02:05.42 through state monies and state control. 00:02:05.45\00:02:08.72 But we generally don't have overt persecution. 00:02:08.76\00:02:13.50 But think about this, unless... 00:02:13.53\00:02:16.20 In the case of Christian, unless you are a dedicated, 00:02:16.23\00:02:20.60 born again, fixated on eternity Christian, 00:02:20.64\00:02:25.11 you're not likely to have persecution. 00:02:25.14\00:02:27.61 Because if there's not much distinction 00:02:27.64\00:02:29.74 between you and the run of the mills, 00:02:29.78\00:02:33.11 secular individuals living within any system, 00:02:33.15\00:02:35.65 particularly in a democracy, why would there be a conflict? 00:02:35.68\00:02:39.42 So by definition, persecution in its truest, 00:02:39.45\00:02:44.79 most direct form can only exist 00:02:44.83\00:02:48.83 where there is spiritual activity, 00:02:48.86\00:02:51.07 spiritual dedication. 00:02:51.10\00:02:53.94 And this has troubled me a lot. 00:02:53.97\00:02:55.77 And I think it's one of the reasons 00:02:55.80\00:02:57.91 why in the western countries, 00:02:57.94\00:02:59.77 where there is clear social frown 00:02:59.81\00:03:02.91 over what a biblical Christian should be 00:03:02.94\00:03:06.48 that in these countries 00:03:06.51\00:03:07.85 we seem not to have persecution. 00:03:07.88\00:03:09.22 But I've become quite convinced 00:03:09.25\00:03:11.62 that if there were to be an upsurge 00:03:11.65\00:03:13.96 in what Ellen White speaking to early Adventist 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.62 used to call primitive godliness. 00:03:16.66\00:03:19.16 In other words, really active gap Christianity 00:03:19.19\00:03:23.67 and constant public witness on behalf of Jesus 00:03:23.70\00:03:28.94 and His coming kingdom. 00:03:28.97\00:03:30.31 If that was the case, there would be persecution. 00:03:30.34\00:03:33.44 It's one of the few promises that Jesus gave. 00:03:33.48\00:03:37.51 People remember some other very good ones, 00:03:37.55\00:03:41.02 you know, let not your hearts be troubled, 00:03:41.05\00:03:42.55 overcome the world, 00:03:42.58\00:03:43.92 you know, and come to me 00:03:43.95\00:03:45.29 all you that are weary and heavy laden, 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.16 and I'll give you rest. 00:03:48.19\00:03:49.52 You know, these are true. 00:03:49.56\00:03:50.89 But Jesus said, 00:03:50.93\00:03:52.26 "All who live a godly life will suffer persecution." 00:03:52.29\00:03:56.16 All, He didn't say most people or you may, All. 00:03:56.20\00:04:01.40 And it's worth remembering 00:04:01.44\00:04:04.17 that even in so called 00:04:04.21\00:04:08.81 free or liberal democracies 00:04:08.84\00:04:12.58 that we can easily have effectively 00:04:12.61\00:04:15.38 have persecution in response to, 00:04:15.42\00:04:18.95 you know, uncomfortable, 00:04:18.99\00:04:20.52 unwelcome religiosity or spiritual activity. 00:04:20.56\00:04:25.26 Countries in the US and Australia, 00:04:25.29\00:04:27.70 where I came from, England, Canada, 00:04:27.73\00:04:30.07 these countries are not used to it. 00:04:30.10\00:04:33.20 And certainly in other countries 00:04:33.23\00:04:34.70 where there's a dominant non-Christian religion, 00:04:34.74\00:04:37.21 there will be conflict. 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.71 It's inevitable. 00:04:39.74\00:04:41.08 Very often Christians or in a Christian country, 00:04:41.11\00:04:45.28 we can have, you know, Buddhists or whatever, 00:04:45.31\00:04:48.95 people in those situations 00:04:48.98\00:04:50.35 can sort of go quiet and nothing will happen. 00:04:50.39\00:04:53.82 But when you're active about your religion, 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.86 you get a bounce back. 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.49 I want to share a poem 00:04:57.53\00:04:58.86 that my father used once in a sermon. 00:04:58.89\00:05:02.36 I remember, I think I was still a teenager, 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.40 and I heard him preach once. 00:05:05.43\00:05:06.77 And he used an old poem 00:05:06.80\00:05:08.94 that maybe some of the viewers know that it's very telling. 00:05:08.97\00:05:13.41 It's called the Church Walking With The World. 00:05:13.44\00:05:17.95 In fact, even as I say it, 00:05:17.98\00:05:19.31 it has a little echo 00:05:19.35\00:05:20.68 of a Lewis Carroll poem 00:05:20.72\00:05:25.35 about the Walrus on the beach with the oysters. 00:05:25.39\00:05:29.06 But that aside, 00:05:29.09\00:05:31.86 the Church Working With The World. 00:05:31.89\00:05:34.20 It says, "The Church and the World 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.23 walked far apart." 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.70 Separation of church and state, 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.50 they walked far apart on the changing shores of time. 00:05:40.54\00:05:44.67 "The World was singing a giddy song, 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.51 and the church a hymn sublime." 00:05:47.54\00:05:50.18 They're very different. 00:05:50.21\00:05:52.28 "'Come, give me your hand,' said the merry World, 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.35 'And walk with me this way!' 00:05:55.38\00:05:57.79 But the good Church hid her snowy hands 00:05:57.82\00:06:01.02 and solemnly and said, 00:06:01.06\00:06:02.39 'No, I will not give you my hand at all, 00:06:02.42\00:06:05.66 and I will not walk with you. 00:06:05.69\00:06:07.93 Your way is the way that leads to death. 00:06:07.96\00:06:09.86 Your words are all untrue.' 00:06:09.90\00:06:13.23 'No, walk with me but a little space, 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.50 ' said the World with a kindly air. 00:06:15.54\00:06:18.37 'The road I walk is a pleasant road, 00:06:18.41\00:06:21.24 and the sun shines always there. 00:06:21.28\00:06:24.21 Your path is thorny and rough and rude, 00:06:24.25\00:06:28.28 but mine is broad and plain. 00:06:28.32\00:06:30.85 My way is paved with flowers and dews, 00:06:30.89\00:06:33.92 and yours with tears and pain. 00:06:33.96\00:06:37.13 The sky to me is always blue, no want, no toil I know. 00:06:37.16\00:06:41.80 The sky above you is always dark. 00:06:41.83\00:06:44.43 Your lot is a lot of woe. 00:06:44.47\00:06:47.14 There's room enough for you and me 00:06:47.17\00:06:48.67 to travel side by side.' 00:06:48.70\00:06:51.87 Half shyly the Church approached the World 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.88 and gave him her hand of snow. 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.65 And the old World grasped it, 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.65 and walked along saying in accents low. 00:06:59.68\00:07:02.78 'Your dress is too simple to please my taste. 00:07:02.82\00:07:06.59 I will give you pearls to wear, 00:07:06.62\00:07:08.29 rich velvets and silks for your graceful form. 00:07:08.32\00:07:13.19 And diamonds to deck your hair.' 00:07:13.23\00:07:15.56 The Church looked down at her plain, white robes, 00:07:15.60\00:07:19.47 and then at the dazzling World, 00:07:19.50\00:07:22.50 and blushed as she saw his handsome lip 00:07:22.54\00:07:24.74 with a smile contemptuous curled. 00:07:24.77\00:07:28.11 'I will change my dress for a costlier one,' 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.78 said the Church with a smile of grace. 00:07:30.81\00:07:33.65 Then her pure white garments drifted away 00:07:33.68\00:07:37.75 and the World gave in their place, 00:07:37.79\00:07:39.72 beautiful satins and shining silks, 00:07:39.75\00:07:42.39 roses and gems and costly pearls. 00:07:42.42\00:07:45.36 While over her forehead, 00:07:45.39\00:07:46.86 her bright hair fell crisped in thousand curls. 00:07:46.90\00:07:52.77 'Your house is too plain,' said the proud old World. 00:07:52.80\00:07:56.71 'I'll build you one like mine with walls of marble 00:07:56.74\00:08:00.98 and towers of gold and furniture ever so fine.' 00:08:01.01\00:08:05.71 So he built her a costly and beautiful house. 00:08:05.75\00:08:09.18 Most splendid it was to behold. 00:08:09.22\00:08:11.39 Her sons and her beautiful daughters 00:08:11.42\00:08:13.46 dwelt there, 00:08:13.49\00:08:14.82 gleaming in purple and gold. 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.96 Rich fairs and shows in the halls were held, 00:08:17.99\00:08:20.40 and the World and his children were there. 00:08:20.43\00:08:22.40 Laughter and music and feasts were heard in a place 00:08:22.43\00:08:25.63 that was meant for prayers. 00:08:25.67\00:08:28.00 There were cushioned seats for the rich and the great 00:08:28.04\00:08:31.77 to sit in there pomp and pride, 00:08:31.81\00:08:33.84 but the poor who were clad in shabby array, 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.91 sat meekly down outside. 00:08:35.94\00:08:38.81 'You give too much to the poor,' said the World. 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.68 'Far more than you ought to do. 00:08:41.72\00:08:44.15 If they are in need of shelter and food, 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.99 why need it trouble you? 00:08:47.02\00:08:49.92 Go, take your money and buy rich robes, 00:08:49.96\00:08:52.79 buy horses and carriages fine, 00:08:52.83\00:08:56.30 buy pearls and jewels and dainty food, 00:08:56.33\00:08:58.77 buy the rarest and costliest wine. 00:08:58.80\00:09:02.00 My children, they dote on all these things. 00:09:02.04\00:09:07.24 And if you their love would win, 00:09:07.28\00:09:09.04 you must do as they do, 00:09:09.08\00:09:10.95 and walk in the ways that they are walking in.' 00:09:10.98\00:09:15.72 So the poor would turned from her door in scorn, 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.42 and she heard not the orphan's cry. 00:09:18.45\00:09:21.22 But she drew her beautiful robes aside, 00:09:21.26\00:09:23.73 as the widows went weeping by. 00:09:23.76\00:09:27.76 Then the sons of the World and the sons of the Church 00:09:27.80\00:09:30.83 walked closely hand in hand. 00:09:30.87\00:09:34.24 And only the Master, who knoweth all, 00:09:34.27\00:09:36.40 could tell the two apart. 00:09:36.44\00:09:39.21 Then the Church sat down at her ease, and said, 00:09:39.24\00:09:42.71 'I am rich and my goods increase. 00:09:42.74\00:09:45.28 I have need of nothing, or ought to do, 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.28 but to laugh, and dance, and feast.' 00:09:47.32\00:09:50.09 The sly World heard, 00:09:50.12\00:09:52.45 and he laughed in his sleeve and mockingly said aside, 00:09:52.49\00:09:57.03 'The Church is fallen, that beautiful Church, 00:09:57.06\00:09:59.89 and her shame is her boast and her pride.' 00:09:59.93\00:10:02.93 The angel drew near to the mercy seat, 00:10:02.96\00:10:04.93 and whispered in sighs her name. 00:10:04.97\00:10:07.74 Then the loud anthems of rapture were hushed, 00:10:07.77\00:10:09.90 and heads were covered with shame. 00:10:09.94\00:10:12.37 And a voice was heard at last by the Church. 00:10:12.41\00:10:15.18 From Him who sat on the throne. 00:10:15.21\00:10:16.98 'I know thy works, and how thou hast said, 00:10:17.01\00:10:20.38 'I am rich and hast not known. 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.68 That thou art naked and poor and blind, 00:10:22.72\00:10:25.82 and wretched before my face.' 00:10:25.85\00:10:27.66 Therefore from my presence cast I thee out, 00:10:27.69\00:10:31.76 and blot thy name from its place.'" 00:10:31.79\00:10:34.30 You know, that's the message delay at the seat 00:10:34.33\00:10:36.26 that I know as the Seventh-day Adventist, 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.50 we've often had shared from the pulpit. 00:10:38.53\00:10:43.20 It's not the only message in Revelation, 00:10:43.24\00:10:46.31 you know, the promises he that overcomes 00:10:46.34\00:10:49.61 will sit with the Lord in heaven, 00:10:49.64\00:10:51.95 but it's a warning to a Church 00:10:51.98\00:10:54.62 that doesn't know the distinction 00:10:54.65\00:10:56.75 between Church and State, 00:10:56.79\00:10:58.52 doesn't know the distinction 00:10:58.55\00:11:00.06 between the holy and the profane, 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.86 to a church that is presently occupied 00:11:02.89\00:11:07.96 with the here and now building if not barns, 00:11:08.00\00:11:11.27 then maybe great edifices, great cathedrals, 00:11:11.30\00:11:14.37 great missionary centres, 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.64 even as we don't go out 00:11:16.67\00:11:18.51 to the poor in our neighbourhoods. 00:11:18.54\00:11:19.87 That's the challenge that's always been before. 00:11:19.91\00:11:23.35 Those are faith. 00:11:23.38\00:11:24.71 And it's the risk that we're hesitating now 00:11:24.75\00:11:27.58 in this time of great technological advance, 00:11:27.62\00:11:32.85 many great deceptions and diversions, 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.46 but a time has ever before 00:11:35.49\00:11:37.53 when church and state are melding 00:11:37.56\00:11:39.73 and
