Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 I was talking at some length 00:00:04.10\00:00:05.43 about John Bunyan and Pilgrim's Progress. 00:00:05.47\00:00:07.64 But what I want to share with you 00:00:07.67\00:00:09.84 is something from his biography, 00:00:09.87\00:00:13.81 Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. 00:00:13.84\00:00:17.21 Not so well known, but really in many ways, 00:00:17.25\00:00:20.78 just as famous by those who know 00:00:20.82\00:00:23.49 anything about John Bunyan. 00:00:23.52\00:00:25.45 And I'm going to read, pardon, 00:00:25.49\00:00:28.62 that it's the best way to communicate what he said. 00:00:28.66\00:00:31.43 And this is what, how he explained it 00:00:31.46\00:00:33.23 fairly early on in that outline of his life's experience. 00:00:33.26\00:00:37.63 He says, " I fell into company with one poor man 00:00:37.67\00:00:41.34 that made profession of religion, 00:00:41.37\00:00:43.71 who, as I then thought, 00:00:43.74\00:00:45.57 did talk pleasantly of the Scriptures, 00:00:45.61\00:00:48.28 and of the matters of religion; wherefore, 00:00:48.31\00:00:51.51 falling into some love and liking to what he said, 00:00:51.55\00:00:54.75 I betook me to my Bible, 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.15 and began to take great pleasure in reading, 00:00:56.18\00:00:59.89 but especially 00:00:59.92\00:01:01.26 with the historical part thereof." 00:01:01.29\00:01:03.22 That's a common failing, in other words, 00:01:03.26\00:01:05.43 it's a piece of literature not really knowing the parent. 00:01:05.46\00:01:08.60 He says, "For as, as for Paul's epistles, 00:01:08.63\00:01:11.50 and such like Scriptures, 00:01:11.53\00:01:13.07 I could not away with them 00:01:13.10\00:01:14.64 being as yet ignorant either of the Scriptures 00:01:14.67\00:01:17.07 or of my nature, 00:01:17.11\00:01:18.44 or of the want and worth of Jesus Christ to save me." 00:01:18.47\00:01:21.98 He says, "Therefore I fell to some outward reformation, 00:01:22.01\00:01:26.51 both in my words and life, 00:01:26.55\00:01:27.88 and did set the commandments 00:01:27.92\00:01:29.25 before me for my ways to heaven, 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.55 which commandments I also did strive to keep, 00:01:31.59\00:01:34.89 and, as I thought, 00:01:34.92\00:01:36.26 did keep them pretty well sometimes, 00:01:36.29\00:01:38.16 and then I should have comfort, 00:01:38.19\00:01:39.73 yet now and then should break one, 00:01:39.76\00:01:42.10 and so afflict my conscience, 00:01:42.13\00:01:44.37 but then I should repent, and say I was sorry for it, 00:01:44.40\00:01:47.50 and promise God to do better next time, 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.84 and there get help again, 00:01:49.87\00:01:51.37 for then I thought I pleased God 00:01:51.41\00:01:53.88 as well as any man in England. 00:01:53.91\00:01:56.61 Thus I continued about a year, 00:01:56.64\00:01:58.95 all which time our neighbors did take me 00:01:58.98\00:02:01.82 to be a very godly man, a new and religious man, 00:02:01.85\00:02:06.79 and did marvel much to see such a great 00:02:06.82\00:02:09.42 and famous alteration in my life and manners, 00:02:09.46\00:02:13.33 and, indeed, so it was, 00:02:13.36\00:02:14.70 though yet I knew not Christ, nor grace, nor faith, 00:02:14.73\00:02:18.13 nor hope, for as I have well seen since, 00:02:18.17\00:02:21.87 had I then died, 00:02:21.90\00:02:23.24 my state had been most fearful." 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.87 He's really getting to the nitty gritty 00:02:25.91\00:02:27.91 of what it means to be a Christian. 00:02:27.94\00:02:29.94 He says, "I loved to be talked of as one that was truly godly. 00:02:29.98\00:02:34.15 I was proud of my godliness, 00:02:34.18\00:02:36.02 and indeed I did all that I did, 00:02:36.05\00:02:37.82 either to be seen of, 00:02:37.85\00:02:40.36 or to be well spoken of, by men. 00:02:40.39\00:02:42.86 And thus I continued 00:02:42.89\00:02:44.23 for about a twelve month or more." 00:02:44.26\00:02:47.73 And then he says, this is the key thing, 00:02:47.76\00:02:50.20 "But upon a day, 00:02:50.23\00:02:52.50 the good providence of God called me to Bedford," 00:02:52.53\00:02:55.80 this is his hometown, 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.71 "to work on my calling, 00:02:57.74\00:02:59.64 and in one of the streets of that town, 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.38 I came where there were three or four poor women 00:03:02.41\00:03:05.55 sitting at a door in the sun, 00:03:05.58\00:03:08.55 talking about the things of God." 00:03:08.58\00:03:11.29 And I must tell you, 00:03:11.32\00:03:12.65 that's an unusual thing in itself. 00:03:12.69\00:03:14.96 I can remember myself when I was back in college, 00:03:14.99\00:03:19.09 in the times of the Jesus movement, 00:03:19.13\00:03:22.86 being very cynical of it at the time, 00:03:22.90\00:03:24.63 and when I look back on it, 00:03:24.67\00:03:26.00 I think there was a stirring in the mulberry bushes 00:03:26.03\00:03:28.20 to put it figuratively. 00:03:28.24\00:03:29.64 Young people were seeking God 00:03:29.67\00:03:32.91 in a rather marked way at that time. 00:03:32.94\00:03:36.34 But I was a little cynical of it, 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.31 but I remember 00:03:38.35\00:03:39.68 after one of the weekend rally sessions, 00:03:39.71\00:03:42.75 some weeks after, during the week, 00:03:42.78\00:03:46.25 I went to a nearby bank, 00:03:46.29\00:03:47.82 and I overheard two young men talking about religion, 00:03:47.86\00:03:51.86 and one of them said to the other, he said, 00:03:51.89\00:03:54.46 "I've determined to model my life 00:03:54.50\00:03:56.73 after Jesus Christ." 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.43 That's an unusual thing in any age to hear. 00:03:58.47\00:04:03.57 So John Bunyan was moved, when he heard these women, 00:04:03.61\00:04:07.34 talking about the things of God as he says, 00:04:07.38\00:04:09.64 and continuing, he says, 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.01 "And being now willing to hear them discourse, 00:04:11.05\00:04:14.58 I drew near to hear what they said, 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.69 for I was now a brisk talker also myself 00:04:16.72\00:04:20.09 in the matters of religion. 00:04:20.12\00:04:22.59 But I may say, I heard, but understood not, 00:04:22.62\00:04:27.23 for they were far above out of my reach. 00:04:27.26\00:04:31.13 Their talk was about a new birth, 00:04:31.17\00:04:34.00 the work of God on their hearts, 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.60 also how they were convinced 00:04:36.64\00:04:38.57 of their miserable state by nature. 00:04:38.61\00:04:41.64 They talked how God had visited their souls 00:04:41.68\00:04:44.41 with His love in the Lord Jesus, 00:04:44.45\00:04:47.02 and with what words and promises 00:04:47.05\00:04:48.68 they had been refreshed, 00:04:48.72\00:04:51.19 comforted and supported 00:04:51.22\00:04:53.29 against the temptations of the Devil. 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.12 Moreover, they reasoned of the suggestions 00:04:55.16\00:04:57.36 and temptations of Satan in particular. 00:04:57.39\00:05:00.26 And told to each other 00:05:00.30\00:05:01.76 by which they had been afflicted 00:05:01.80\00:05:03.13 and how they were born up under His assaults. 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.73 They also discoursed 00:05:05.77\00:05:07.10 on their own wretchedness of heart, 00:05:07.14\00:05:10.27 and of their unbelief, and did condemn, 00:05:10.31\00:05:13.27 slight, and abhor their own righteousness, 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.51 as filthy and insufficient to do them any good. 00:05:15.54\00:05:19.41 And methought," says Bunyan, 00:05:19.45\00:05:21.68 "they spake as if joy did make them speak, 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.79 they spake 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.15 with such pleasantness of Scripture language, 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.32 and with such appearance of grace in all they said, 00:05:28.36\00:05:32.16 that they were to me 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.66 as if they had found a new world, 00:05:34.70\00:05:38.77 as if they were people that dwelt alone, 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.74 and were not to be reckoned among their neighbors." 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.80 And he quotes Numbers 23.9 as a backup to that. 00:05:42.84\00:05:47.54 He says, "At this I felt my own heart began to shake, 00:05:47.58\00:05:51.11 and mistrust my condition to be naught, 00:05:51.15\00:05:54.05 for I saw that in all my thoughts 00:05:54.08\00:05:55.98 about religion and salvation, 00:05:56.02\00:05:58.55 the new birth never did enter into my mind, 00:05:58.59\00:06:02.09 neither knew I the comfort of the Word and promise, 00:06:02.12\00:06:05.19 nor the deceitfulness and treachery 00:06:05.23\00:06:07.96 of my own wicked heart." 00:06:08.00\00:06:11.53 And he says this, 00:06:11.57\00:06:13.07 "By these things my mind was now so turned, 00:06:13.10\00:06:17.97 that it lay like a horse leech at the vein, 00:06:18.01\00:06:22.21 still crying out, give, give, give." 00:06:22.24\00:06:28.08 Maybe I need to go back 00:06:28.12\00:06:30.25 to when I was walking under the underpass 00:06:30.29\00:06:32.29 paddling in the water of the leeches for a second. 00:06:32.32\00:06:34.59 They don't give up easy. 00:06:34.62\00:06:36.02 You got to pull them off, rip their head off. 00:06:36.06\00:06:38.39 And then because the blood still keeps coming 00:06:38.43\00:06:40.66 because they determined to suck your life, 00:06:40.70\00:06:44.37 and he was like that on the things of the Spirit. 00:06:44.40\00:06:46.40 He says, "I was like a horse leech, a big leech, 00:06:46.43\00:06:49.87 at the vein, still crying out, give, give, give. 00:06:49.90\00:06:54.84 It was so fixed on eternity, said Bunyan, 00:06:54.88\00:06:57.75 and on the things about the kingdom of heaven, 00:06:57.78\00:07:02.18 that is, so far as I knew, though as yet, God knows, 00:07:02.22\00:07:04.49 I knew but little he says on the other side, 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.65 but now that pleasures nor profits, nor persuasions, 00:07:06.69\00:07:10.56 nor threats, could loose it, 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.16 or make it let go its hold, 00:07:13.19\00:07:15.03 and though I may speak it with shame, 00:07:15.06\00:07:17.73 yet it is in very deed a certain truth, 00:07:17.77\00:07:20.27 it would then have been as difficult for me 00:07:20.30\00:07:24.54 to have taken my mind from heaven to earth, 00:07:24.57\00:07:26.54 as I have found it often since 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.01 to get away from earth to heaven." 00:07:28.04\00:07:31.28 You know, that's strikes me as a real narrative 00:07:31.31\00:07:34.48 of a real spiritual battle 00:07:34.52\00:07:37.59 that this man was engaged in and, 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.22 you know, he didn't listed as he figuratively wrote about, 00:07:40.26\00:07:44.43 he didn't listed on the Lord's cause, 00:07:44.46\00:07:47.00 and the, you know, 00:07:47.03\00:07:48.36 the war that they fought in the Civil War, 00:07:48.40\00:07:49.73 that was one thing, 00:07:49.76\00:07:51.10 but now he saw that he was engaged 00:07:51.13\00:07:52.90 in the battle for his own soul, 00:07:52.93\00:07:55.00 and the battle against Napoleon. 00:07:55.04\00:07:57.01 And, you know, I could, 00:07:57.04\00:07:58.77 in another times before audiences 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.54 I've read at least for my own edification 00:08:01.58\00:08:04.71 I read the story 00:08:04.75\00:08:06.08 that he tells there of Christian battling Napoleon, 00:08:06.11\00:08:09.48 a real battle and only, 00:08:09.52\00:08:11.62 but by taking the sword of the Spirit, 00:08:11.65\00:08:15.32 at the moment of his extremity 00:08:15.36\00:08:16.86 was able to strike the feign the fatal blow, 00:08:16.89\00:08:20.43 or at least a mortal blow not fatal. 00:08:20.46\00:08:23.43 As Jesus said, you know, 00:08:23.47\00:08:24.80 is the ruler of this world is cast down, 00:08:24.83\00:08:27.70 but not yet, 00:08:27.74\00:08:29.14 until the lake of fire finally destroyed. 00:08:29.17\00:08:32.84 To me, this is inspiring stuff, 00:08:32.87\00:08:35.14 particularly given that it's in the context 00:08:35.18\00:08:38.15 of a great religious civil war, 00:08:38.18\00:08:42.92 a great religious conflict in England, 00:08:42.95\00:08:46.32 which was the center then 00:08:46.35\00:08:47.69 of the largest empire in the world. 00:08:47.72\00:08:50.33 You know, today it's the American Empire 00:08:50.36\00:08:52.06 and that's another story 00:08:52.09\00:08:53.80 and also with a religious viewpoint, 00:08:53.83\00:08:57.07 entangled with the administration 00:08:57.10\00:08:59.63 of this new empire. 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.27 But in Bunyan's time, 00:09:01.30\00:09:03.30 this religiously oriented nation 00:09:03.34\00:09:06.17 had gone through a civil war where religion was fought over. 00:09:06.21\00:09:10.65 And as a soldier in that war, 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.45 he found out that the real battle 00:09:12.48\00:09:16.42 was for his own soul 00:09:16.45\00:09:18.15 that the real battle was against, 00:09:18.19\00:09:20.46 as the Bible says 00:09:20.49\00:09:21.82 principalities and powers in the highest places. 00:09:21.86\00:09:24.83 It was his own inclinations. 00:09:24.86\00:09:27.76 It was the force of evil projected against him 00:09:27.80\00:09:30.27 through society, through his own desires. 00:09:30.30\00:09:35.04 And to me, it's as relevant today 00:09:35.07\00:09:38.34 as when Bunyan the Tinker, 00:09:38.37\00:09:41.61 wasted away his life in prison and then put it 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.31 to good use in writing that book, 00:09:44.35\00:09:46.38 as when he freed by, ironically enough, 00:09:46.41\00:09:50.12 interestingly enough, 00:09:50.15\00:09:51.49 John Owen paid the ransom 00:09:51.52\00:09:54.26 for John Bunyan to be released from prison, 00:09:54.29\00:09:57.26 in a recognition as he said 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.69 that learning and sophistication 00:09:59.73\00:10:02.03 were nothing compared to a tinker, 00:10:02.06\00:10:05.03 a simple preacher who had discovered God 00:10:05.07\00:10:08.60 and faith for himself and then listed 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.64 in that final battle for his soul. 00:10:11.67\00:10:15.24 And I want to encourage you 00:10:15.28\00:10:16.61 as we face these difficult times, 00:10:16.64\00:10:19.51 they're only going to get more difficult 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.72 and more spiritually charged. 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.55 And the threats against us 00:10:23.59\00:10:25.25 practicing religious liberty are going to increase. 00:10:25.29\00:10:28.22 I want to encourage you, read Pilgrim's Progress. 00:10:28.26\00:10:31.19 And as I do, 00:10:31.23\00:10:32.76 let's try to gain some lessons 00:10:32.79\00:10:35.76 from this man who the hard way fought, 00:10:35.80\00:10:38.73 and I believe prevailed 00:10:38.77\00:10:41.60 against wickedness in high places, 00:10:41.64\00:10:43.94 wickedness in his own heart. 00:10:43.97\00:10:46.31 God bless you as we continue 00:10:46.34\00:10:48.61 thinking about these heroes of the past 00:10:48.64\00:10:51.95 in the great religious liberty challenge. 00:10:51.98\00:10:55.88 We'll be back after a short break. 00:10:55.92\00:10:57.52
