Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 Before the break with Greg Hamilton, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 we were looking at the Bible for some guidelines in... 00:00:04.10\00:00:07.40 1 Timothy 2. 00:00:07.44\00:00:08.77 And starting with 1 Timothy 00:00:08.80\00:00:10.17 and then getting on to Paul's more general, 00:00:10.21\00:00:12.27 not more general, but other statements 00:00:12.31\00:00:14.94 about authorities, and how we relate to them. 00:00:14.98\00:00:18.51 And this is not a theoretical, 00:00:18.55\00:00:19.88 this is not a biblical devotional exercise. 00:00:19.91\00:00:22.92 It's an everyday, 00:00:22.95\00:00:24.55 more and more becoming an everyday concern 00:00:24.59\00:00:26.42 of a Christian in any community, 00:00:26.45\00:00:29.06 particularly in repressive regimes, 00:00:29.09\00:00:30.93 but even in a Western democracy. 00:00:30.96\00:00:36.40 Is it just a matter of whatever the state says, 00:00:36.43\00:00:40.14 we not only pray for them where you, you know, 00:00:40.17\00:00:43.51 accede to secular demands. 00:00:43.54\00:00:46.27 That seems to me that that has some limits, 00:00:46.31\00:00:50.55 but it's being used 00:00:50.58\00:00:51.91 by when the church state can, are joining. 00:00:51.95\00:00:55.38 Often religious leaders have said, 00:00:55.42\00:00:57.22 well, you do what the state says, 00:00:57.25\00:00:58.59 it's your duty. 00:00:58.62\00:00:59.95 You know, often I've used the term in Liberty often, 00:00:59.99\00:01:02.39 they become state exhilarates, religious leaders, 00:01:02.42\00:01:05.59 and invoke Paul's words to bring the people in line. 00:01:05.63\00:01:09.43 Well, and here's the problem. 00:01:09.46\00:01:11.33 If you don't stand up for what is right, 00:01:11.37\00:01:13.94 you end up becoming complicit. 00:01:13.97\00:01:15.37 It's... 00:01:15.40\00:01:16.74 This idea that, well, 00:01:16.77\00:01:18.11 we'll just do the Lord's ministry 00:01:18.14\00:01:19.54 and do what's right, like in Hitler's day. 00:01:19.57\00:01:21.78 I mean, Christianity, 00:01:21.81\00:01:24.11 Christians became complicit behind Hitler 00:01:24.15\00:01:27.28 and supported him 00:01:27.32\00:01:29.35 for really ridiculous reasons 00:01:29.38\00:01:32.85 in my opinion. 00:01:32.89\00:01:34.22 And so what you end up with 00:01:34.26\00:01:36.02 is a complicity that's unsustainable 00:01:36.06\00:01:39.36 and unconscionable. 00:01:39.39\00:01:41.00 And so really, 00:01:41.03\00:01:42.46 it's better to stand up for what is right 00:01:42.50\00:01:45.00 and maybe lose your life over it 00:01:45.03\00:01:47.77 than to remain neutral. 00:01:47.80\00:01:50.37 I think of the French Underground, 00:01:50.41\00:01:51.74 for example. 00:01:51.77\00:01:53.11 I mean in the French Underground, 00:01:53.14\00:01:54.48 there was a lot of Christians involved 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.21 in that French Underground. 00:01:56.24\00:01:57.58 I know a number of them who were Adventists. 00:01:57.61\00:02:00.05 I mean, you can read... 00:02:00.08\00:02:04.02 What's his face? Who wrote Flee the Captor? 00:02:04.05\00:02:07.66 Oh, I can't think of it. Ford is his name. 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.83 But he was an Adventist communications director 00:02:10.86\00:02:13.26 of Pacific Union College for years. 00:02:13.29\00:02:15.50 And so I think that 00:02:15.53\00:02:18.63 that there is a time and a place 00:02:18.67\00:02:20.50 to do what's right even if it's, 00:02:20.54\00:02:22.67 you know, underground type fashion. 00:02:22.70\00:02:24.64 And now, 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.01 would you invoke something that's very problematic? 00:02:26.04\00:02:28.08 If you go to most history books 00:02:28.11\00:02:30.48 which are not necessarily always accurate, 00:02:30.51\00:02:32.51 you'll find that the underground 00:02:32.55\00:02:35.12 in those all the resistance in so many of these countries, 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.75 they pretty much say they were socialists. 00:02:37.79\00:02:40.92 Yeah. Communists and socialists. 00:02:40.96\00:02:42.29 Well, but that was the rhetoric of the day. 00:02:42.32\00:02:44.56 It was either... 00:02:44.59\00:02:45.93 You're either a fascist 00:02:45.96\00:02:47.30 or you were a communist/socialist. 00:02:47.33\00:02:48.66 Now, but let's just say they were not in total, 00:02:48.70\00:02:51.63 but somewhat. 00:02:51.67\00:02:53.00 That same rhetoric is still with us today 00:02:53.03\00:02:54.80 even in our political propaganda 00:02:54.84\00:02:58.04 that you see on TV. 00:02:58.07\00:02:59.41 It's nonsense. 00:02:59.44\00:03:00.78 But anyhow, the point that I want to bring out of it, 00:03:00.81\00:03:02.94 I don't think that should be a total inhibition 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.81 just because someone else that's for another reason 00:03:05.85\00:03:09.32 different from what anyone should agree was a bad policy 00:03:09.35\00:03:14.69 by becoming party to their actions, 00:03:14.72\00:03:18.09 you're not necessarily supporting them. 00:03:18.13\00:03:20.76 You're both opposing, something's wrong. 00:03:20.80\00:03:23.33 Ellen White, one of the Adventist pioneers, 00:03:23.37\00:03:25.20 I think showed the way on this. 00:03:25.23\00:03:27.00 She was a great champion 00:03:27.04\00:03:30.04 for prohibition or for anti-alcohol. 00:03:30.07\00:03:32.11 Yeah. 00:03:32.14\00:03:33.48 At the same time with many of the groups 00:03:33.51\00:03:34.84 that she was working 00:03:34.88\00:03:36.21 with were trying for Sunday laws. 00:03:36.24\00:03:37.58 Yes. 00:03:37.61\00:03:38.95 Which she was adamantly opposed to 00:03:38.98\00:03:40.32 from a religious liberty perspective. 00:03:40.35\00:03:41.68 Right. 00:03:41.72\00:03:43.05 But it didn't stop her working with them 00:03:43.08\00:03:44.42 on this other good cause. 00:03:44.45\00:03:45.79 She walked the tightrope. Yeah. 00:03:45.82\00:03:47.16 And when we... Which is what we need to do. 00:03:47.19\00:03:49.39 Well, we're dealing with authorities, 00:03:49.42\00:03:50.86 we're walking a tightrope between their claims on us 00:03:50.89\00:03:53.93 and heavens have superior claim. 00:03:53.96\00:03:55.90 Which means the old statement 00:03:55.93\00:03:57.27 that we said over and over again, 00:03:57.30\00:03:58.63 sometimes we have to work with strange bedfellows. 00:03:58.67\00:04:01.57 Yeah. Yeah. 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.81 Not bedbugs, but... 00:04:03.84\00:04:07.01 That's funny. 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.81 So but, you know, 00:04:08.84\00:04:10.61 I more and more think this is not theoretical now. 00:04:10.65\00:04:14.08 Again, we want to be supportive of need to be supportive, 00:04:14.12\00:04:18.12 whatever administration say in this country 00:04:18.15\00:04:20.52 that were situated the United States. 00:04:20.56\00:04:23.46 At the moment, 00:04:23.49\00:04:24.83 some religious people believe that 00:04:24.86\00:04:26.93 this President administration is not just being used of God 00:04:26.96\00:04:30.77 'cause they can all be used of God 00:04:30.80\00:04:32.67 or ultimately the forces. 00:04:32.70\00:04:35.67 But, you know, 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.04 that this is someone that's sort of chosen. 00:04:37.07\00:04:41.21 A President's been chosen by God. 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.31 It's funny how... I wish God had been. 00:04:43.35\00:04:45.51 I mean, that's dangerous to think anyway. 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.12 So what do you do with the ones you don't like? 00:04:47.15\00:04:49.05 So suddenly, they're not chosen anymore? 00:04:49.08\00:04:50.89 Yes. So that's the reasoning. 00:04:50.92\00:04:53.32 See how fickle that is. Yeah. 00:04:53.36\00:04:54.79 That is so fickled. Yeah. 00:04:54.82\00:04:56.96 Well, it's one dimensional. 00:04:56.99\00:05:00.00 It's unthinking. Yeah. 00:05:00.03\00:05:01.96 And for other unthinking people 00:05:02.00\00:05:03.87 that will lead them into trouble. 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.47 Yeah. It's not... 00:05:05.50\00:05:06.84 I'm not particularly on this occasion 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.44 saying that the President administration 00:05:08.47\00:05:10.27 or President is doing anything wrong. 00:05:10.31\00:05:11.71 Yeah. 00:05:11.74\00:05:13.07 But I'd be embarrassed if someone treated me that way. 00:05:13.11\00:05:14.54 Yeah. 00:05:14.58\00:05:15.91 That's taking away even ultimately, 00:05:15.94\00:05:18.08 my own actions and my own responsibility 00:05:18.11\00:05:20.78 for what I come up with. 00:05:20.82\00:05:22.15 Is it possible that we need our worldviews converted? 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.32 Is it possible that sometimes 00:05:24.35\00:05:27.26 our political prejudices 00:05:27.29\00:05:30.59 guide our faith instead of the other way around? 00:05:30.63\00:05:33.36 Absolutely. This is what I'm fishing for. 00:05:33.40\00:05:35.56 Like Daniel in the Bible since we're biblical. 00:05:35.60\00:05:39.27 You know, Daniel wasn't an elected official. 00:05:39.30\00:05:40.77 That's true. 00:05:40.80\00:05:42.14 He started off as a captive, in essence a slave and so on. 00:05:42.17\00:05:45.27 But he showed his trustfulness and was given public trust 00:05:45.31\00:05:49.28 under many administrations. 00:05:49.31\00:05:51.45 I can't find and it's true, he wrote, 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.62 apparently he wrote some of that himself 00:05:53.65\00:05:55.65 if not all of it, 00:05:55.68\00:05:57.12 but I can't find evidence 00:05:57.15\00:05:59.42 that Daniel was a political operative. 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.02 No. 00:06:01.06\00:06:02.39 He was there to do what was good for the nation 00:06:02.42\00:06:04.66 and the people, 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.03 no matter which people 00:06:06.06\00:06:07.40 and which nation because that were his. 00:06:07.43\00:06:08.76 Right. 00:06:08.80\00:06:10.13 He was being a good steward, 00:06:10.17\00:06:11.57 but his loyalty was always to God. 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.20 Right. 00:06:13.23\00:06:14.57 And I really think in our day and age 00:06:14.60\00:06:15.94 whether it's the United States or in some other country, 00:06:15.97\00:06:19.51 Christian is much safer 00:06:19.54\00:06:20.98 if they've decided ahead of time. 00:06:21.01\00:06:23.45 They serve God and they know 00:06:23.48\00:06:24.81 what his constitution if you like, 00:06:24.85\00:06:27.58 have that check listed, 00:06:27.62\00:06:29.15 then living in the real world as we do 00:06:29.18\00:06:32.19 they have full loyalty 00:06:32.22\00:06:34.49 and have no reason to react 00:06:34.52\00:06:38.36 or reject a leader's commands 00:06:38.39\00:06:40.66 but the reference point is your constitution... 00:06:40.70\00:06:42.96 Yeah. Your high loyalty. 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.33 And right or wrong, 00:06:44.37\00:06:45.70 I mean, some people would see Dr. Ben Carson in that role 00:06:45.73\00:06:49.47 or the chaplain, 00:06:49.50\00:06:51.04 the Senate Chaplain Barry Black. 00:06:51.07\00:06:53.31 Absolutely. 00:06:53.34\00:06:54.68 God puts people in certain places to serve Him 00:06:54.71\00:06:58.48 in a way that we have never had the opportunity. 00:06:58.51\00:07:01.98 And so we need to pray for them, 00:07:02.02\00:07:04.29 seriously pray for them. 00:07:04.32\00:07:05.89 But what we need to avoid as people that function 00:07:05.92\00:07:10.43 as Cardinal Richelieu did in France. 00:07:10.46\00:07:13.40 Oh, yeah. 00:07:13.43\00:07:14.76 Anyone that knows that story? Oh, sure. 00:07:14.80\00:07:16.36 He was the modern, 00:07:16.40\00:07:17.73 at least at that time, modern Machiavelli. 00:07:17.77\00:07:19.57 He was a Machiavellian church leader 00:07:19.60\00:07:23.34 who in a certain way... 00:07:23.37\00:07:25.27 He promised you the world and stabbed you in the back. 00:07:25.31\00:07:27.74 Was wielding the power in a secular state. 00:07:27.78\00:07:30.58 I mean, that's religion at its worst in my view. 00:07:30.61\00:07:32.95 Yeah. 00:07:32.98\00:07:34.32 Some say he was the founder of The Three Musketeers, 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.35 but that has any... 00:07:36.38\00:07:37.95 There's no truth. 00:07:37.99\00:07:39.32 You're getting a bit mixed up with Alexander Crummell. 00:07:39.35\00:07:41.86 Well, that too. 00:07:41.89\00:07:43.26 But no it was that era, so anyway. 00:07:43.29\00:07:46.59 But may be people don't know that history, 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.00 but it's well recorded and he was a powerful figure, 00:07:49.03\00:07:52.40 but clearly he was backwards and forwards 00:07:52.43\00:07:55.97 across the line of church and state and of this. 00:07:56.00\00:07:59.14 Well, his aspiration was to be the next pope. 00:07:59.17\00:08:01.88 And in fact did go further. 00:08:01.91\00:08:03.28 He was loyal to the queen but not to the king. 00:08:03.31\00:08:05.55 Yes. 00:08:05.58\00:08:07.02 We need to be loyal to the king. 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.68 It just depends on the situation which king. 00:08:08.72\00:08:12.09 Normally in this world, it's the secular king. 00:08:12.12\00:08:15.92 But when it's higher moral values, 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.79 it's always the absolute King. 00:08:17.83\00:08:19.16 Yeah, absolutely. 00:08:19.19\00:08:20.53 And it's hard for people to keep that in mind. 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.30 But we need to because I really think... 00:08:22.33\00:08:24.27 Well, not think. 00:08:24.30\00:08:25.63 It's certainly staring us in the face 00:08:25.67\00:08:28.04 as the world gets more complicated, 00:08:28.07\00:08:30.84 government becomes more if not intrusive, 00:08:30.87\00:08:33.41 more enveloping of our daily life. 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.98 We need to have it sorted out 00:08:36.01\00:08:37.65 how we relate to these secular powers. 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.75 Well, you know, it's funny. 00:08:39.78\00:08:41.42 There was a guy named Jonathan Mayhew 00:08:41.45\00:08:43.52 during the time of just prior to the American founding, 00:08:43.55\00:08:47.66 and he got up and preached a lot 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.39 against the British government, 00:08:49.42\00:08:51.99 and specifically King George, 00:08:52.03\00:08:54.50 and he would quote often his sermons Galatians 5:1, 00:08:54.53\00:08:57.87 "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. 00:08:57.90\00:09:00.20 Stand firm, then, 00:09:00.24\00:09:01.57 and do not let yourselves be burdened again 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.30 by a yoke of slavery." 00:09:03.34\00:09:04.74 Although he meant it in political terms 00:09:04.77\00:09:07.84 to rise up against, 00:09:07.88\00:09:09.48 he was the big, one of the biggest figures. 00:09:09.51\00:09:10.85 One of the popes spoke against slavery to sin. 00:09:10.88\00:09:12.68 He was one of the big callers for revolution 00:09:12.71\00:09:16.12 against Great Britain. 00:09:16.15\00:09:17.79 And so and yet he was using a verse 00:09:17.82\00:09:21.36 that had nothing to do with that. 00:09:21.39\00:09:22.92 A verse that Paul was saying, 00:09:22.96\00:09:24.99 don't be yoked by your selfish, sinful ways, 00:09:25.03\00:09:29.03 be free in Christ. 00:09:29.06\00:09:30.63 And it's so easy 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.73 to call for certain things against certain leaders, 00:09:32.77\00:09:37.91 now King George III certainly deserved that. 00:09:37.94\00:09:41.24 But here we have an example how it's easy 00:09:41.28\00:09:44.48 to misuse our standing 00:09:44.51\00:09:48.32 for a calling that may not 00:09:48.35\00:09:51.02 or may be of God. 00:09:51.05\00:09:54.06 Yeah. 00:09:54.09\00:09:55.42 Now It's a serious question, 00:09:55.46\00:09:58.26 as I say in our age 00:09:58.29\00:09:59.89 we need to look carefully at this. 00:09:59.93\00:10:01.56 And I think, 00:10:01.60\00:10:02.93 decide ahead of time the priorities. 00:10:02.96\00:10:06.40 Don't wait till the political situation 00:10:06.43\00:10:09.77 is so charged that the crowd will push you forward 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.81 and you sign up for President Gordon 00:10:12.84\00:10:15.34 and or whatever. 00:10:15.38\00:10:16.91 Yes. 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.28 Because at that late point, 00:10:18.31\00:10:19.65 there's a rationale that people go along with. 00:10:19.68\00:10:22.45 I think we all have a moral responsibility 00:10:22.48\00:10:24.95 to stand up for what is right, because it is right. 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.92 But I think we need wisdom from on high 00:10:27.96\00:10:30.39 and I think we need to know 00:10:30.43\00:10:33.70 when to pick and choose our battles. 00:10:33.73\00:10:36.26 And I think it's very incumbent upon us 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.87 as Christians to follow that advice 00:10:38.90\00:10:44.01 and to be respectful of our rulers and be respectful 00:10:44.04\00:10:48.01 of those that have been voted in. 00:10:48.04\00:10:50.45 So remember your leaders and pray for them. 00:10:50.48\00:10:53.15 Some years ago, 00:10:58.35\00:10:59.69 I remember being very taken after reading a book 00:10:59.72\00:11:03.06 and seeing a film strip called the Gospel Blimp, 00:11:03.09\00:11:07.00 which told in a humorous manner 00:11:07.03\00:11:08.60 how the whole community of Christians 00:11:08.63\00:11:11.47 got absolutely fixated on promoting 00:11:11.50\00:11:14.14 and witnessing for the Lord via a blimp. 00:11:14.17\00:11:17.31 And all the advertising and the fundraising 00:11:17.34\00:11:19.64 and everything concerning the blimp. 00:11:19.67\00:11:22.14 But after a while, they realized that 00:11:22.18\00:11:23.95 it did become an end in itself. 00:11:23.98\00:11:26.41 With religious liberty, it's very important 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.85 not to confuse talk with action. 00:11:28.88\00:11:32.85 And as I've observed, 00:11:32.89\00:11:34.32 Greg Hamilton and many others like him 00:11:34.36\00:11:36.12 in our Religious Liberty Community, 00:11:36.16\00:11:37.79 I can see that that distinction is what is necessary. 00:11:37.83\00:11:42.83 With Greg Hamilton in his area, they've contacted legislators, 00:11:42.86\00:11:47.07 he's spoken to the leaders, 00:11:47.10\00:11:48.87 he's made a difference legislatively. 00:11:48.90\00:11:51.21 He's put the name of his church 00:11:51.24\00:11:52.87 and of his principles of Religious Liberty 00:11:52.91\00:11:55.21 before these leaders 00:11:55.24\00:11:57.58 and it's made a difference. 00:11:57.61\00:11:59.58 It's effective 00:11:59.61\00:12:00.95 and it's been a powerful witness. 00:12:00.98\00:12:04.65 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:04.69\00:12:07.39
