Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:27.12\00:00:29.02 This is a program designed 00:00:29.06\00:00:30.56 to get you thinking about religious liberty 00:00:30.59\00:00:33.40 and the ramifications for this wonderful principle 00:00:33.43\00:00:36.00 throughout this world of ours in the United States 00:00:36.03\00:00:38.63 often particularly, but everywhere. 00:00:38.67\00:00:41.47 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine. 00:00:41.50\00:00:44.81 And my guest on this program is Greg Hamilton, 00:00:44.84\00:00:47.84 President of the Northwest Religious Liberty Association, 00:00:47.88\00:00:50.98 a friend, someone I've known for a long time, 00:00:51.01\00:00:53.58 and a man with a lot of life ahead of him, 00:00:53.62\00:00:58.75 but it's possible in the near future 00:00:58.79\00:01:01.49 you'll be moving on to other things 00:01:01.52\00:01:04.03 and sort of book ending a career in religious liberty. 00:01:04.06\00:01:07.26 And I wanna spend a little bit of time with you 00:01:07.30\00:01:09.90 as a leader in this area. 00:01:09.93\00:01:11.83 You know, tell me how you got into this area, what led to it? 00:01:11.87\00:01:15.30 What you've done 00:01:15.34\00:01:16.67 and some of your views on religious liberties 00:01:16.71\00:01:18.71 that have come out of your experience? 00:01:18.74\00:01:20.94 It was a childhood dream actually. 00:01:20.98\00:01:23.95 You know, little kids have dreams 00:01:23.98\00:01:25.31 about what they wanna do and become in life. 00:01:25.35\00:01:27.38 Well, for me I wanted to become a professional baseball player, 00:01:27.42\00:01:30.25 or an astronaut, or a fireman, or a racecar driver. 00:01:30.29\00:01:33.76 You know, one of those four. 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.56 And yet as I got a little older, 00:01:35.59\00:01:39.29 by the time I was about 10 years old, 00:01:39.33\00:01:41.96 I began to realize 00:01:42.00\00:01:43.57 our family's heritage was very strong. 00:01:43.60\00:01:46.17 I mean with a name like Hamilton 00:01:46.20\00:01:48.14 for your last name, you kind of wonder, 00:01:48.17\00:01:50.11 are you related to Alexander Hamilton, 00:01:50.14\00:01:51.84 okay, Constitutional founder, all right. 00:01:51.87\00:01:54.18 But you didn't become a gunslinger or... 00:01:54.21\00:01:57.15 No, I tell you. Or a professional duelist. 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.28 No, and then you find out 00:01:59.31\00:02:01.28 that you're related to Julius Caesar's grand besides, 00:02:01.32\00:02:04.09 you say to yourself, I wonder, you know. 00:02:04.12\00:02:07.42 And then as a child I remember this text regarding Esther, 00:02:07.46\00:02:10.73 Mordecai, sort of sarcastically says, 00:02:10.76\00:02:15.46 almost mockingly but thinking well, 00:02:15.50\00:02:17.93 maybe so, you know. 00:02:17.97\00:02:20.54 Says to Esther and who knows, 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.67 but maybe you've been called for such a time as this 00:02:22.70\00:02:26.88 to a royal position. 00:02:26.91\00:02:28.24 Yeah. 00:02:28.28\00:02:29.61 And if you think of everything that Esther had to go through 00:02:29.64\00:02:31.85 which I won't talk about now. 00:02:31.88\00:02:33.82 But I mean, you think about her calling 00:02:33.85\00:02:38.15 and I think of a lot of people's 00:02:38.19\00:02:40.89 calling throughout scripture. 00:02:40.92\00:02:42.69 You know, great men, great women. 00:02:42.72\00:02:45.39 And you say to yourself, does God have a destiny for me, 00:02:45.43\00:02:47.83 and you start thinking about these things. 00:02:47.86\00:02:50.43 It's called the age of awareness 00:02:50.47\00:02:52.03 between 10 and 12 and 15, 00:02:52.07\00:02:54.90 and it's like Christ when He went to the temple, 00:02:54.94\00:02:57.31 you know, and He discovered that He was indeed God. 00:02:57.34\00:03:00.71 I mean, what an amazing awareness, 00:03:00.74\00:03:02.91 what an amazing revelation, a self revelation. 00:03:02.94\00:03:05.08 Yeah. 00:03:05.11\00:03:06.45 That's incredible, so I thought to myself, 00:03:06.48\00:03:09.08 hmm, what is the Lord asking me to do. 00:03:09.12\00:03:12.32 And then there was a man who came to our church 00:03:12.35\00:03:15.42 and spoke and his name was Elder John Stevens. 00:03:15.46\00:03:18.96 And I will never forget... I remember him very well. 00:03:18.99\00:03:20.83 I'll never forget giving a very stirring sermon 00:03:20.86\00:03:24.00 and his defense of religious freedom in America 00:03:24.03\00:03:27.14 and the Constitution and the First Amendment, 00:03:27.17\00:03:29.47 and how that was being usurped by people 00:03:29.50\00:03:32.11 that appeared to be well meaning, 00:03:32.14\00:03:35.44 but really wanted to undo our constitutional system 00:03:35.48\00:03:39.65 and basically set up a Christian nation 00:03:39.68\00:03:42.12 "by law", okay. 00:03:42.15\00:03:44.29 And I thought, wow, that's interesting. 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.92 So, defending religious freedom, 00:03:46.96\00:03:48.79 is that my calling. 00:03:48.82\00:03:50.43 And it just kept gnawing at me, it kept growing in thought, 00:03:50.46\00:03:55.83 and by the time I became a ministerial student 00:03:55.86\00:03:58.50 at Pacific Union College after trying out 00:03:58.53\00:04:00.50 for the Cincinnati Reds by the way. 00:04:00.54\00:04:02.87 Somewhere along the line 00:04:02.90\00:04:04.24 you had a burden to be a minister. 00:04:04.27\00:04:05.61 I, no, not really, not... 00:04:05.64\00:04:07.81 I mean I did, but that was not my thing, 00:04:07.84\00:04:10.71 I had done Bible work for evangelist Tony Moore 00:04:10.75\00:04:13.38 in New York City and Stanford, Connecticut. 00:04:13.42\00:04:16.15 And I had built log homes and taught school up in Canada. 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.42 And that helped quite a bit, especially the teaching, 00:04:19.45\00:04:22.72 the life and teachings of Christ 00:04:22.76\00:04:24.36 to the sophomore class 00:04:24.39\00:04:25.73 involving the four gospels and the book, 00:04:25.76\00:04:27.33 The Desire of Ages by Ellen G. White. 00:04:27.36\00:04:30.37 That inspired me very, very much, 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.33 but I think what really inspired me 00:04:32.37\00:04:35.07 into religious liberty 00:04:35.10\00:04:37.34 as a ministry calling 00:04:37.37\00:04:41.24 was clearly my sense of pride as an American. 00:04:41.28\00:04:47.22 That our nation was to be 00:04:47.25\00:04:50.89 a shining city on a hill. 00:04:50.92\00:04:54.62 That we were to represent 00:04:54.66\00:04:59.43 pure principles to the world 00:04:59.46\00:05:02.43 that truly would be a light to the world, 00:05:02.46\00:05:05.20 the spreading of the gospel and so forth. 00:05:05.23\00:05:08.00 America had a special mission 00:05:08.04\00:05:09.67 and that we had a special place in it, 00:05:09.70\00:05:11.87 and that perhaps I had a special place in it. 00:05:11.91\00:05:13.84 And yet now that you're deep into religious liberty, 00:05:13.88\00:05:17.71 the philosophy, 00:05:17.75\00:05:19.08 you understand the problems with American exceptionalism? 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.98 Oh, absolutely, and, you know, 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.35 that was the hard thing to learn along the way. 00:05:23.39\00:05:26.25 Absolutely it was a hard thing for me to swallow, 00:05:26.29\00:05:28.62 but when I started reading the gospels, 00:05:28.66\00:05:30.99 especially where Christ said, 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.53 yeah, you see that city and temple that you so admire, 00:05:33.56\00:05:36.87 you disciples that your calling, 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.70 you know that your heart swells up over, 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.94 not one stone will be left upon another. 00:05:40.97\00:05:43.04 I mean, that was one of the most unpatriotic things 00:05:43.07\00:05:45.24 that could be stated. 00:05:45.27\00:05:46.61 That's true. 00:05:46.64\00:05:47.98 And yet Christ was... 00:05:48.01\00:05:49.34 But remember that was what the priest went after him for. 00:05:49.38\00:05:51.15 Yeah. 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.51 They said, he said, he'd destroy the temple. 00:05:52.55\00:05:53.88 Right. 00:05:53.92\00:05:55.25 That was sacrilege of the first degree. 00:05:55.28\00:05:56.62 But he was talking about his body 00:05:56.65\00:05:57.99 being raised back after three days. 00:05:58.02\00:05:59.35 It just hit me, in a way that was more offensive to them 00:05:59.39\00:06:01.12 than Him saying that He was God. 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.69 Yeah, absolutely, so here, 00:06:02.72\00:06:05.46 here Christ was seeing things in prophetic vision, 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.33 and then we've been given a prophetic vision as a church 00:06:08.36\00:06:13.37 to call people to be ready 00:06:13.40\00:06:14.97 for the soon coming of Jesus Christ. 00:06:15.00\00:06:16.77 And I thought, well, 00:06:16.81\00:06:18.14 how does that square up with American nationalism. 00:06:18.17\00:06:21.88 And it doesn't at all. 00:06:21.91\00:06:24.28 And not that I'm unpatriotic, in fact, I'm not. 00:06:24.31\00:06:27.48 I'm very proud to be related to some very significant people 00:06:27.52\00:06:31.32 in American history, who did some great things, 00:06:31.35\00:06:33.82 winning the civil war, giving us our economic system 00:06:33.86\00:06:36.76 and being a constitutional framer. 00:06:36.79\00:06:39.33 You know, those things really make me proud 00:06:39.36\00:06:41.70 but what makes me the most... 00:06:41.73\00:06:44.63 What makes me sober 00:06:44.67\00:06:46.27 and yet realizing the daunting ministry task 00:06:46.30\00:06:51.54 was, you know, recognizing the life of Christ 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.51 and basically His ministry and mission was very short, 00:06:54.54\00:06:57.91 three and a half years. 00:06:57.95\00:06:59.41 And He did not bow to popular persuasion. 00:06:59.45\00:07:04.02 He spoke the truth in love 00:07:04.05\00:07:06.19 and He stayed focused in His mission 00:07:06.22\00:07:08.82 and message were prophetic. 00:07:08.86\00:07:10.93 And I believe that we have to stand up for truth 00:07:10.96\00:07:12.99 though the heavens may fall 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.70 and that's what I believed 00:07:14.73\00:07:16.77 was my calling into this very rewarding 00:07:16.80\00:07:20.24 but difficult ministry we call religious liberty ministry. 00:07:20.27\00:07:22.67 So you became like Paul, 00:07:22.70\00:07:24.04 the heavenly vision sort of drew you on. 00:07:24.07\00:07:27.61 Yeah. 00:07:27.64\00:07:28.98 I just love that when Paul says to Felix, I think he says, 00:07:29.01\00:07:31.91 you know, I was not disobedient to that heavenly vision. 00:07:31.95\00:07:34.42 Right. Right. Yeah. 00:07:34.45\00:07:36.28 So, God opened up many miracles for me. 00:07:36.32\00:07:40.56 I mean, first all I didn't think 00:07:40.59\00:07:42.12 after having a 3.65 GPA at Portland State University 00:07:42.16\00:07:46.83 in communications for my bachelor's degree 00:07:46.86\00:07:50.10 that I would ever, 00:07:50.13\00:07:51.97 after 10 years of pastoral ministry 00:07:52.00\00:07:53.67 in Nevada-Utah Conference 00:07:53.70\00:07:55.10 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:07:55.14\00:07:57.21 Never thought that I would get 00:07:57.24\00:07:58.91 a full blown academic scholarship 00:07:58.94\00:08:01.58 and a graduate assistantship to pay me 00:08:01.61\00:08:04.05 to actually go to school, 00:08:04.08\00:08:05.48 $1,200 a month to be the student editor 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.62 of the Journal of Church and State. 00:08:08.65\00:08:09.98 The prestigious Journal of Church 00:08:10.02\00:08:11.35 and State of Baylor University 00:08:11.39\00:08:12.95 and to become the right hand man 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.52 of Dr. Derek Davis, 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.53 the chairman of the department 00:08:17.56\00:08:18.89 and the editor of the Journal of Church and State. 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.26 And sometimes author in Liberty magazine. 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.16 Yeah, yeah. 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.53 And so I just, I, you know, it was just, I mean, 00:08:23.57\00:08:27.30 when I was at Baylor University I had to pinch myself 00:08:27.34\00:08:29.60 to say is this really happening, 00:08:29.64\00:08:30.97 is this really true. 00:08:31.01\00:08:32.57 And he always said, don't write about something, 00:08:32.61\00:08:36.18 don't research something that you want to prove, 00:08:36.21\00:08:40.98 or something that is based 00:08:41.02\00:08:43.32 upon your prejudices 00:08:43.35\00:08:47.29 or your world view. 00:08:47.32\00:08:48.72 Don't try to do that, 00:08:48.76\00:08:50.09 write on something fresh and new, 00:08:50.13\00:08:52.23 and even research and write about something 00:08:52.26\00:08:56.60 that you might come out on the opposite side of. 00:08:56.63\00:09:00.17 So what were some of the papers you wrote when you were there? 00:09:00.20\00:09:02.70 Well, I wrote on the life of Ronald Reagan 00:09:02.74\00:09:05.04 and his so called belief in prophecy 00:09:05.07\00:09:08.78 and apocalyptic vision and his grand view of himself 00:09:08.81\00:09:12.71 as being sort of like this messianic savior 00:09:12.75\00:09:14.92 to save the world from nuclear holocaust 00:09:14.95\00:09:17.59 which by the way I thought was very honorable of Reagan, 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.62 no matter how incredible 00:09:20.66\00:09:26.29 it was in terms of credibility. 00:09:26.33\00:09:31.30 Yeah, but nevertheless, you know, I think of that, 00:09:31.33\00:09:34.30 I think about my paper on Charlemagne. 00:09:34.34\00:09:36.27 I grew a new appreciation for Charlemagne. 00:09:36.30\00:09:40.64 Saint Augustine for example I did and Ulrich Zwingli, 00:09:40.68\00:09:45.98 the Protestant reformer who wielded the sword 00:09:46.01\00:09:49.32 in defense of Protestantism against the Catholics 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.55 on the battlefield of Kappel, 00:09:51.59\00:09:53.22 of course, where he lost his life 00:09:53.25\00:09:55.16 and so on and so forth, 00:09:55.19\00:09:57.06 but mostly my graduate, 00:09:57.09\00:09:59.53 my big 402 page graduate work 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.20 on Sandra Day O'Connor's judicial philosophy 00:10:02.23\00:10:04.60 and the role of religion in life. 00:10:04.63\00:10:05.97 Yeah, I've often spoken to you about her, 00:10:06.00\00:10:07.34 I didn't realize you've done a paper on her. 00:10:07.37\00:10:08.87 Yeah, well, that was my... 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.34 It's an year that's gone by but it was very formative to... 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.27 Yeah, it was my thesis last dissertation. 00:10:13.31\00:10:15.54 By the way, it's still an original work, 00:10:15.58\00:10:17.68 nobody has even touched upon her church, 00:10:17.71\00:10:19.85 state or religion clause jurisprudence. 00:10:19.88\00:10:23.08 I'm the only one so, I'm thankful for that 00:10:23.12\00:10:27.42 and I hope to retool it upon retirement 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.73 and getting it published. 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.16 Now this was at Baylor University, 00:10:32.19\00:10:35.23 a Baptist university 00:10:35.26\00:10:36.73 and sadly Baylor doesn't have 00:10:36.77\00:10:39.03 that J.M Dawson Institute anymore. 00:10:39.07\00:10:41.84 It has the research center 00:10:41.87\00:10:43.20 and it still has class offerings there, 00:10:43.24\00:10:45.07 no, it's still functioning. 00:10:45.11\00:10:46.91 And they saw the Journal of Church and State, 00:10:46.94\00:10:48.68 it's just not recognized. 00:10:48.71\00:10:50.05 Last time I visited, 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.41 I couldn't find any physical location. 00:10:51.45\00:10:52.78 It's just not recognized as a degree program, 00:10:52.81\00:10:55.78 it still has the courses. 00:10:55.82\00:10:57.15 But it was a wonderful program, what I'm fishing for, 00:10:57.19\00:10:59.95 you know, our Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:10:59.99\00:11:02.16 has a need for this sort of thing. 00:11:02.19\00:11:04.69 There's some small efforts put toward it, 00:11:04.73\00:11:07.06 but I don't think we have anything 00:11:07.10\00:11:08.43 approaching that church... 00:11:08.46\00:11:09.80 Well, there's some efforts being, 00:11:09.83\00:11:11.63 you know, being considered, 00:11:11.67\00:11:14.04 but it's not being taken too seriously 00:11:14.07\00:11:16.30 by our college administrators at this point. 00:11:16.34\00:11:17.84 Yeah, what I think 00:11:17.87\00:11:19.21 is certainly talking about Seventh-day Adventist, 00:11:19.24\00:11:21.08 I think every pastor 00:11:21.11\00:11:22.74 should receive a grounding in this. 00:11:22.78\00:11:24.11 Yes. 00:11:24.15\00:11:25.48 I mean you got it by your own initiative. 00:11:25.51\00:11:28.22 At least some curriculum that involves it say, 00:11:28.25\00:11:31.02 say a sophomore, 00:11:31.05\00:11:36.02 junior and senior class. 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.39 Like, you know, each one 00:11:38.43\00:11:41.00 being more significant than the other, 00:11:41.03\00:11:43.03 the basics and then on to something more advanced. 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.87 Yeah, I think we ought to offer that. 00:11:45.90\00:11:47.60 And one thing that studies in religious liberty 00:11:47.64\00:11:50.67 give you by necessity 00:11:50.71\00:11:52.04 is a wide ranging look at church's history 00:11:52.07\00:11:55.14 which intersects with secular history 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.68 of governance, laws... 00:11:57.71\00:11:59.25 Current movements. 00:11:59.28\00:12:00.85 It broadens your horizons. 00:12:00.88\00:12:02.28 Including international movements and international law 00:12:02.32\00:12:05.45 which is what we did at Baylor University. 00:12:05.49\00:12:07.72 Right. 00:12:07.76\00:12:09.09 You know, talking to my predecessor Clifford Goldstein, 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.86 a friend we have in common. 00:12:11.89\00:12:13.29 Yes. 00:12:13.33\00:12:14.66 We've nutted through a lot of philosophical stuff 00:12:14.70\00:12:17.47 and I've often brought out that you've got to be careful 00:12:17.50\00:12:20.90 because whether it's a church 00:12:20.94\00:12:22.80 or a political viewpoint of whatever. 00:12:22.84\00:12:27.51 Once you get inside the fairy circle 00:12:27.54\00:12:29.68 of your accepted confines, your ideological confines, 00:12:29.71\00:12:34.45 it's very easy to have a discussion, 00:12:34.48\00:12:35.82 it all make sense. 00:12:35.85\00:12:37.19 But if you step outside, it may be just nonsensical, 00:12:37.22\00:12:39.69 not logical, but certainly not well reasoned enough 00:12:39.72\00:12:42.39 to convince an outsider. 00:12:42.42\00:12:44.36 And I think we're privileged in religious liberty 00:12:44.39\00:12:47.33 that we're dealing in this wider sphere a lot. 00:12:47.36\00:12:50.07 And even on a religious level, 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.20 we're dealing with other churches 00:12:52.23\00:12:53.57 and non-faith groups. 00:12:53.60\00:12:55.94 Secularist should be just as happy 00:12:55.97\00:12:58.47 as a religious person 00:12:58.51\00:12:59.84 with true understanding of religious liberty, 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.48 of separation of church and state 00:13:01.51\00:13:03.48 and the integrity of the individual 00:13:03.51\00:13:05.21 to make up their own mind. 00:13:05.25\00:13:06.58 But you know what? 00:13:06.61\00:13:07.95 I have found as president 00:13:07.98\00:13:09.32 of the Northwest Religious Liberty Association, 00:13:09.35\00:13:11.32 I found it's much easier to coalesce liberal, 00:13:11.35\00:13:15.62 more secular legislators at the state level together 00:13:15.66\00:13:20.46 behind a common cause or bill 00:13:20.50\00:13:22.86 than it has been to bring about religious leaders together. 00:13:22.90\00:13:26.47 That's an irony, but it's true. 00:13:26.50\00:13:29.10 Religious leader said, 00:13:29.14\00:13:30.47 they're often within that circle 00:13:30.51\00:13:31.84 and they have trusted themselves. 00:13:31.87\00:13:33.21 Religious leaders often 00:13:33.24\00:13:35.84 very aggressively disagree with each other 00:13:35.88\00:13:39.68 and won't budge 00:13:39.71\00:13:41.22 and, so it was my privilege over 10 years 00:13:41.25\00:13:43.79 to bring the religious leaders of the state of Oregon together 00:13:43.82\00:13:47.89 around one central bill, 00:13:47.92\00:13:49.79 the Oregon Workplace Religious Freedom Act. 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.53 And... 00:13:51.56\00:13:52.89 We were happy to feature that in Liberty, 00:13:52.93\00:13:54.26 that was a landmark. 00:13:54.30\00:13:55.63 It was 10 years of blood, sweat and tears 00:13:55.66\00:13:58.67 and I'm telling you, 00:13:58.70\00:14:00.04 it was the most gratifying opportunity 00:14:00.07\00:14:04.01 to serve at that level 00:14:04.04\00:14:05.37 with speaker of the house Dave Hunt, 00:14:05.41\00:14:08.34 who was a lowly freshman legislator at the time 00:14:08.38\00:14:10.95 when he became our sponsor. 00:14:10.98\00:14:12.98 And I'm telling you, 00:14:13.01\00:14:14.58 there was nothing more gratifying 00:14:14.62\00:14:16.05 to see that bill finally pass both chambers 00:14:16.08\00:14:19.55 and then not only the governor signing it 00:14:19.59\00:14:22.09 but there was even a threat 00:14:22.12\00:14:23.83 for it to be repealed and so... 00:14:23.86\00:14:28.46 I didn't know that. Yes. 00:14:28.50\00:14:30.03 Let's take a short break and we'll come back 00:14:30.07\00:14:31.83 and flesh out this discussion of this Oregon bill. 00:14:31.87\00:14:36.37 Stay with us. 00:14:36.40\00:14:37.74
