Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.76 Before the break, with guest, Greg Hamilton, 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.73 we were remarking on how in the wide world 00:00:04.77\00:00:09.24 there are many individual cases of countries, 00:00:09.27\00:00:12.44 some big countries like India, 00:00:12.47\00:00:14.24 we were just talking about 00:00:14.28\00:00:15.64 where they seem to be the clock is going backwards, 00:00:15.68\00:00:18.18 especially in regard to religion and tolerance and, 00:00:18.21\00:00:22.42 well, tolerance is a bad word to give religion, 00:00:22.45\00:00:24.12 but you know what I mean? 00:00:24.15\00:00:25.49 That's just, the threshold is drifting backwards. 00:00:25.52\00:00:27.66 Yes. 00:00:27.69\00:00:29.02 And I think you'd mentioned China. 00:00:29.06\00:00:32.83 There's a horrible situation with the Muslim speaking 00:00:32.86\00:00:36.80 minority up toward Mongolia, 00:00:36.83\00:00:39.43 but Christians are not getting a good run of it in China. 00:00:39.47\00:00:43.10 Actually, they're doing pretty good. 00:00:43.14\00:00:44.47 Here's what I learned at the Council 00:00:44.51\00:00:46.57 on Foreign Relations 00:00:46.61\00:00:47.94 just about a year and a half ago, 00:00:47.98\00:00:49.71 is that Jameen, 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.81 the premier is moving towards 00:00:52.85\00:00:58.79 recognizing Christianity in the sense 00:00:58.82\00:01:01.36 that it plays a traditional role 00:01:01.39\00:01:05.76 in China's history. 00:01:05.79\00:01:08.36 And so, therefore to uphold 00:01:08.40\00:01:12.77 China's traditions that, 00:01:12.80\00:01:15.60 he thinks that it's best to 00:01:15.64\00:01:18.17 as long as they're willing to sign on with the state 00:01:18.21\00:01:21.31 and become state approved churches... 00:01:21.34\00:01:23.21 Three-Self Movement. 00:01:23.24\00:01:24.58 Including even small groups who will yield to that, 00:01:24.61\00:01:27.25 then home churches, then everything will be fine. 00:01:27.28\00:01:31.09 Well, let's use American language. 00:01:31.12\00:01:32.62 That's establishment. 00:01:32.65\00:01:34.29 It is, it is. But nevertheless... 00:01:34.32\00:01:36.32 And unless you belong to the established church, 00:01:36.36\00:01:38.26 they won't persecute you. 00:01:38.29\00:01:39.63 Well, but it goes along with the same reasoning 00:01:39.66\00:01:41.26 is in their policies. 00:01:41.30\00:01:43.77 With the papacy and with Rome 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.60 and the appointment of cardinals and bishops, 00:01:45.63\00:01:48.37 so there's this been this long going dispute 00:01:48.40\00:01:51.07 dating back to John Paul II, then Pope Benedict, 00:01:51.11\00:01:54.64 and now Pope Francis, 00:01:54.68\00:01:56.14 you know, who has the right to 00:01:56.18\00:01:58.81 basically it's investigator controversy 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.58 of the Dark Ages. 00:02:00.62\00:02:01.95 Basically who has 00:02:01.98\00:02:03.32 It's a good parallel, I like it. 00:02:03.35\00:02:04.69 Who has the right to give the scepter 00:02:04.72\00:02:06.05 and ordain who 00:02:06.09\00:02:07.42 and basically the state of China says, 00:02:07.46\00:02:09.49 "It's our right. 00:02:09.52\00:02:10.86 We will determine 00:02:10.89\00:02:12.23 who the cardinals and bishops are, 00:02:12.26\00:02:13.60 not Rome." 00:02:13.63\00:02:14.96 And so Pope Francis has said, 00:02:15.00\00:02:16.33 you know, after a long dispute says, 00:02:16.36\00:02:17.70 "Okay, fine, 00:02:17.73\00:02:19.07 we give into that, you know, 00:02:19.10\00:02:20.44 to secure peace." 00:02:20.47\00:02:21.80 And what's interesting about that 00:02:21.84\00:02:23.17 is it's now preparing the wait for a state visit to China. 00:02:23.20\00:02:27.38 And there is over something like... 00:02:27.41\00:02:32.81 I forget it is 10 million Catholics in China, 00:02:32.85\00:02:36.15 which is a significant number even though, you know... 00:02:36.18\00:02:38.55 No, when you're talking a billion players. 00:02:38.59\00:02:40.36 Yeah, 1.2 billion, true. 00:02:40.39\00:02:41.72 But it represents about 1% of the country 00:02:41.76\00:02:44.46 or something like that. 00:02:44.49\00:02:45.83 But nevertheless, they're growing 00:02:45.86\00:02:47.23 and that's the significant factor 00:02:47.26\00:02:48.70 is they're growing. 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.07 And so a state visit to, 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.70 say, Beijing would be huge for Pope Francis. 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.87 The same thing is happening actually in Russia. 00:02:55.90\00:02:57.77 The Russian Orthodox Church has got Francis in the Vatican, 00:02:57.81\00:03:02.84 the Holy See to say, 00:03:02.88\00:03:04.28 "Okay, we won't evangelize anymore." 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.35 So evangelism is off the table, 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.38 but we'll recognize you as a traditional religion 00:03:08.42\00:03:12.59 in Russia, a competing religion, 00:03:12.62\00:03:13.96 but nevertheless someone, 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.73 a religion that will live in peaceful coexistence 00:03:16.76\00:03:18.76 with Russian Orthodox and other religions. 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.36 And so that's a good thing. 00:03:21.40\00:03:22.80 So that's preparing a way for a state visit for the pope. 00:03:22.83\00:03:27.30 Yes, as far as low attentions that sounds good, 00:03:27.34\00:03:30.74 but it's actually very retrograde. 00:03:30.77\00:03:32.47 When I was growing up in Australia, 00:03:32.51\00:03:34.51 I used to hear a lot about the missions 00:03:34.54\00:03:36.11 in the South Pacific. 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.38 And it devolved down to, 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.72 I guess I have to give my age roughly, 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.78 in the '50s and '60s. 00:03:42.82\00:03:46.25 In that whole area it devolved down this island 00:03:46.29\00:03:49.59 would be Methodist, 00:03:49.62\00:03:51.73 this island would be Adventist, 00:03:51.76\00:03:55.23 this island would be Catholic. 00:03:55.26\00:03:56.93 And things were fine if you obeyed that, 00:03:56.97\00:03:59.33 but you send a missionary into that island, 00:03:59.37\00:04:01.60 an Adventist missionary go to Methodist. 00:04:01.64\00:04:04.01 It's certainly a cultural mindset. 00:04:04.04\00:04:05.51 Right. 00:04:05.54\00:04:06.88 And I don't think we can agree with that. 00:04:06.91\00:04:10.58 This is a Muslim territory. 00:04:10.61\00:04:12.81 This is a Christian territory. Of course. 00:04:12.85\00:04:14.38 And I still remember years ago 00:04:14.42\00:04:17.19 in South Africa 00:04:17.22\00:04:18.55 trying to interview one of the mullahs. 00:04:18.59\00:04:20.86 He was an advisor to the Rafsanjani in Iran. 00:04:20.89\00:04:25.63 And when I interviewed him, 00:04:25.66\00:04:27.00 he got quite stroppy with me on something. 00:04:27.03\00:04:29.16 So at one point, he said to me he says, 00:04:29.20\00:04:30.97 "If I had been born in America, 00:04:31.00\00:04:33.47 what would I have been born?" 00:04:33.50\00:04:34.84 I said, "Probably Christian." 00:04:34.87\00:04:36.20 But it's still... And he says, 00:04:36.24\00:04:37.57 "If you'd been born in Iran, what would you be?" 00:04:37.61\00:04:39.61 I said, "Probably Muslim." 00:04:39.64\00:04:40.98 He says, "Fine, leave it that way." 00:04:41.01\00:04:42.34 But it still is... 00:04:42.38\00:04:43.71 In other words you're Muslim, 00:04:43.75\00:04:45.08 I mean, you're Christian, I'm Muslim. 00:04:45.11\00:04:46.45 But it's still an improvement. 00:04:46.48\00:04:47.82 That's not another words. 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.18 Well... 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.55 In other words, Adventist, 00:04:50.59\00:04:51.92 Christianity are not being outlawed, 00:04:51.95\00:04:53.29 they are not being persecuted or oppressed. 00:04:53.32\00:04:54.66 Okay, so in that sense, it is... 00:04:54.69\00:04:56.69 An improvement. An improvement. 00:04:56.73\00:04:58.06 Some improvements are elusory, 00:04:58.09\00:05:02.50 like the whole style of communism. 00:05:02.53\00:05:04.43 And China is a hybrid 00:05:04.47\00:05:06.37 but it's still a great communist. 00:05:06.40\00:05:07.74 What I'm saying is that 00:05:07.77\00:05:09.10 Christianity is benefiting in China 00:05:09.14\00:05:10.47 and Islam is losing. 00:05:10.51\00:05:12.17 So there seems to be this... 00:05:12.21\00:05:14.51 Because Christianity is more passive at the moment. 00:05:14.54\00:05:16.95 It seemed Christianity is being embraced 00:05:16.98\00:05:19.68 by strong man right now. 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.48 And communist theory was religion is antithetical 00:05:21.52\00:05:24.95 to progressive 00:05:24.99\00:05:29.39 people that are moving in evolutionary 00:05:29.42\00:05:34.03 way to the dictatorship of the masses if you like. 00:05:34.06\00:05:38.03 And the way to deal 00:05:38.07\00:05:39.47 whether it is Stalin and others, 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.30 you know, kill all the priests, 00:05:41.34\00:05:42.87 you know, he killed 50,000 priests. 00:05:42.90\00:05:44.81 But once they got past that era, 00:05:44.84\00:05:46.61 it's still isolate the old people, 00:05:46.64\00:05:48.64 give them too place to worship at the time 00:05:48.68\00:05:51.61 and restrict them 00:05:51.65\00:05:52.98 and make them socially powerless outside that 00:05:53.01\00:05:56.75 and when they die, it's gone away, 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.12 solves your problem. 00:05:58.15\00:05:59.49 The Three-Self in my use a total control movement. 00:05:59.52\00:06:03.63 And at the Three-Self Movement 00:06:03.66\00:06:05.53 they even say who the preacher is on a given Sabbath 00:06:05.56\00:06:08.06 in an Adventist Church, 00:06:08.10\00:06:09.70 it may not even be the Adventist pastor, 00:06:09.73\00:06:12.30 it may be a minister from another church. 00:06:12.33\00:06:14.77 So it's the form of godliness without the power 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.84 and without the freedom of choice. 00:06:17.87\00:06:19.51 And then if you meet in a home 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.34 which a lot of activated Christians and evangelicals 00:06:21.38\00:06:26.95 and missionary minded Christians are, 00:06:26.98\00:06:29.05 you get caught at that. 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.42 You go to the labor camp where they harvest your organs. 00:06:30.45\00:06:33.69 It's not just, you know, nice, 00:06:33.72\00:06:36.93 regimented lifestyle... 00:06:36.96\00:06:38.29 But what it's trying to do 00:06:38.33\00:06:39.66 and what's happening is my point 00:06:39.69\00:06:42.13 is that it's creating a Christian hegemony 00:06:42.16\00:06:45.67 around this world in terms of alignment with governments, 00:06:45.70\00:06:48.77 okay, in terms of approval. 00:06:48.80\00:06:50.47 It is. That's not my point. 00:06:50.51\00:06:53.04 My point is it's happening and it says phenomenon 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.48 that we need to be watched. 00:06:55.51\00:06:56.85 Right. 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.21 And remember in Nazi Germany, 00:06:58.25\00:06:59.58 that they co-opted the Catholic Church 00:06:59.61\00:07:01.15 and many other at the Lutheran Church 00:07:01.18\00:07:03.28 and many other Protestant Churches. 00:07:03.32\00:07:06.15 They were co-opted and looking at 00:07:06.19\00:07:08.12 in the hindsight of history, 00:07:08.16\00:07:09.49 it was an abomination. 00:07:09.52\00:07:11.16 They enabled the worst excesses of that dictatorship. 00:07:11.19\00:07:15.33 But just because the dictatorship 00:07:15.36\00:07:16.70 isn't quite Hitler revisited 00:07:16.73\00:07:18.70 doesn't mean the same dynamics not at work. 00:07:18.73\00:07:20.74 And I really think religion needs to be careful 00:07:20.77\00:07:22.77 that it doesn't become 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.14 the auxiliary of the past structure 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.41 at the time. 00:07:26.44\00:07:27.78 But what's motivating them? 00:07:27.81\00:07:29.48 Is it their fear of Islam? 00:07:29.51\00:07:31.45 I think that's part of it. 00:07:31.48\00:07:34.32 China, the government, yes. 00:07:34.35\00:07:35.95 They have a fear of all organized religion. 00:07:35.98\00:07:37.82 Well, same thing in India 00:07:37.85\00:07:39.42 and same thing with, yeah, in India. 00:07:39.45\00:07:40.79 And these are real fears. 00:07:40.82\00:07:42.16 I write something on the liberty. 00:07:42.19\00:07:43.53 These are real fears. Yes. Yes. 00:07:43.56\00:07:45.39 They may be approaching it in a paranoid way. 00:07:45.43\00:07:47.86 But there is substance to their fear. 00:07:47.90\00:07:50.73 Yeah. And Russia. 00:07:50.77\00:07:52.83 You mentioned Russia. 00:07:52.87\00:07:54.20 There's substance to Russia's suspicion 00:07:54.24\00:07:57.14 that evangelical Protestant organizations 00:07:57.17\00:08:00.64 are often a beachhead for American 00:08:00.68\00:08:03.45 or Western influence. 00:08:03.48\00:08:05.21 There is substance for that. 00:08:05.25\00:08:06.58 Philip Jenkins at Baylor University, 00:08:06.61\00:08:09.38 he's a famous sociology of religion professor. 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.95 And he writes a book called years ago, 00:08:12.99\00:08:16.56 back around 2001 actually, 00:08:16.59\00:08:19.36 the coming of Christendom 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.66 or the, basically he writes in his book 00:08:21.70\00:08:24.53 is that Islam will take a backseat. 00:08:24.57\00:08:28.77 It may be the fastest growing religion 00:08:28.80\00:08:30.77 and he disputes that, 00:08:30.81\00:08:32.14 he says, "Actually, Christianity 00:08:32.17\00:08:33.51 is growing faster than Islam 00:08:33.54\00:08:34.88 because Islam is on the basis of birth." 00:08:34.91\00:08:37.08 He said, "Everybody presumes that they'll grow faster, 00:08:37.11\00:08:39.31 but Christianity is actually growing faster 00:08:39.35\00:08:42.38 through evangelization." 00:08:42.42\00:08:44.25 And so he proves this statistically, but he says, 00:08:44.29\00:08:47.59 "The big thing that's helping the Christian religion 00:08:47.62\00:08:51.99 is its alignment with governments." 00:08:52.03\00:08:55.16 And he says, "This is what solidifying a Christian, 00:08:55.20\00:08:59.23 hegemony around the world." 00:08:59.27\00:09:00.60 That's true. 00:09:00.64\00:09:01.97 But, of course, Christianity came through... 00:09:02.00\00:09:03.81 But that's been always the crux. 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.17 Power with its alliance with Constantine. 00:09:05.21\00:09:06.54 That's always been the crux of Christianity 00:09:06.57\00:09:08.44 is they've always found a way to empower 00:09:08.48\00:09:10.75 itself through alignment with government. 00:09:10.78\00:09:15.28 But yet you and I are dedicated 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.05 to the opposite, separation of church and state. 00:09:17.09\00:09:18.92 Yes. 00:09:18.95\00:09:20.29 On the radio, I heard the other day 00:09:20.32\00:09:21.86 this politician is saying that, 00:09:21.89\00:09:25.69 you know, how old system our society is, 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.83 and Western civilization is based on Christianity. 00:09:28.86\00:09:32.73 That's just wrong. Yeah. 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.64 If you equate Western liberal democratic tradition 00:09:34.67\00:09:38.37 with Christianity, 00:09:38.41\00:09:39.74 Christianity should have been supportive 00:09:39.77\00:09:41.24 to any good political development. 00:09:41.28\00:09:42.94 But it's not religion on the political march. 00:09:42.98\00:09:46.61 That's the way of the medieval thinking in my view. 00:09:46.65\00:09:49.75 Today, we've talked about the oppression of strong men 00:09:50.89\00:09:56.22 that seems to be reemerging in the world 00:09:56.26\00:09:58.69 and how it's basically being driven 00:09:58.73\00:10:01.43 by a misunderstanding of religious freedom. 00:10:01.46\00:10:04.50 They want religious freedom 00:10:04.53\00:10:06.27 for their sense of religious nationalism, 00:10:06.30\00:10:09.94 Hinduism and in India, 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.97 and of course, Christianity in China. 00:10:13.01\00:10:17.18 And so as Christianity develops 00:10:17.21\00:10:19.81 more of this hegemony 00:10:19.85\00:10:21.75 by aligning itself with governments 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.22 around the world, 00:10:23.25\00:10:24.65 it may seem to be strength to Christianity. 00:10:24.69\00:10:28.92 Attacking itself to the flag, 00:10:28.96\00:10:30.43 but in fact, it's a weakness 00:10:30.46\00:10:32.33 because it limits its spiritual authority. 00:10:32.36\00:10:37.30 I remember, when I was much younger, 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.17 my father came back from a visit to Scandinavia. 00:10:45.21\00:10:48.58 And in one of those countries he photographed 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.31 and remarked endlessly 00:10:51.35\00:10:53.25 on a statue that showed a writhing mass of humanity 00:10:53.28\00:10:56.79 all climbing over each other to get to the top. 00:10:56.82\00:11:00.16 In many ways the world 00:11:00.19\00:11:01.52 as I see it today is sort of fit that bill. 00:11:01.56\00:11:05.86 There's a turmoil, 00:11:05.89\00:11:07.83 a conflict in almost every country 00:11:07.86\00:11:10.37 whether it's over often religion, 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.20 it's over rich versus poor aspirations, 00:11:13.23\00:11:16.40 whether it's over natural calamity or just 00:11:16.44\00:11:19.31 societies often being dragged into the 21st century. 00:11:19.34\00:11:25.21 But all taken together it means 00:11:25.25\00:11:27.58 that there is a crying need 00:11:27.62\00:11:29.65 for people to look to God for security. 00:11:29.68\00:11:32.15 There is a crying need to resolve 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.32 any number of human problems 00:11:34.36\00:11:36.12 most of which it root are spiritual 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.59 and can be easily resolved if people look to God, 00:11:39.63\00:11:43.06 look to His principles, and look to a future, 00:11:43.10\00:11:47.07 a promise future with the Lord. 00:11:47.10\00:11:50.37 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.21
