Welcome back to the Liberty Insider 00:00:03.50\00:00:05.20 with my friend Tony Steinberg, 00:00:05.23\00:00:08.57 where we're entering into it where no man dare go 00:00:08.60\00:00:13.27 no more 'cause we're embracing discussion of abortion, 00:00:13.31\00:00:17.78 but I wanted to get, take it a little further, 00:00:17.81\00:00:21.82 organ donations, 00:00:21.85\00:00:27.26 maybe even population control under the guise of... 00:00:27.29\00:00:32.13 I was trying to think how to describe it 00:00:32.16\00:00:33.86 of injections that's been done, 00:00:33.90\00:00:35.86 and euthanasia we haven't approached that, 00:00:35.90\00:00:38.63 but I think... 00:00:38.67\00:00:40.00 Taken all together 00:00:40.04\00:00:41.37 while there's some scientific advances mixed in, 00:00:41.40\00:00:44.21 the net result is a lowered view 00:00:44.24\00:00:47.11 of the uniqueness 00:00:47.14\00:00:48.48 and the spiritual star like quality 00:00:48.51\00:00:52.71 if you like a children of God. 00:00:52.75\00:00:54.68 Yeah. 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.05 Well, I believe I'm created in the image of God 00:00:56.08\00:00:58.35 and I'm very fallible. 00:00:58.39\00:00:59.72 I make mistakes, I'm not perfect in any way, 00:00:59.75\00:01:02.49 but my belief system is that 00:01:02.52\00:01:04.56 I am created in the image of God 00:01:04.59\00:01:06.90 and I have certain responsibilities. 00:01:06.93\00:01:09.26 And one of the things that confronted me 00:01:09.30\00:01:14.10 is that this idea, 00:01:14.14\00:01:15.70 I know in Washington State 00:01:15.74\00:01:17.07 they call it Death with Dignity. 00:01:17.11\00:01:19.01 It's a physician assisted suicide 00:01:19.04\00:01:22.04 and most physicians are violating 00:01:22.08\00:01:24.05 their Hippocratic Oath. 00:01:24.08\00:01:26.05 Yeah. 00:01:26.08\00:01:27.42 When they say first do no harm... 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.35 And they by taking on a Hippocratic. 00:01:29.38\00:01:31.02 Yeah. 00:01:31.05\00:01:32.39 Then simply become a hypocritical character. 00:01:32.42\00:01:33.76 But then they rationalize that by saying, 00:01:33.79\00:01:36.42 well, I'm alleviating the suffering. 00:01:36.46\00:01:39.26 And my mom used to work 00:01:39.29\00:01:41.10 in elderly homes, nursing homes. 00:01:41.13\00:01:44.73 And my mom when the debate was coming 00:01:44.77\00:01:47.54 through Washington State on the Death with Dignity Act, 00:01:47.57\00:01:51.11 my mom was like, you know, it's not pretty, 00:01:51.14\00:01:53.48 death isn't meant to be pretty. 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.48 And if someone wants to kill themselves that's, 00:01:55.51\00:01:59.08 you know, if they want to do that, that's on them. 00:01:59.11\00:02:01.42 You don't need to make it sanitary 00:02:01.45\00:02:02.78 and bring the doctor and witnesses involved. 00:02:02.82\00:02:05.09 I mean, I think in Michigan 00:02:05.12\00:02:06.45 there is a well-known physician, 00:02:06.49\00:02:08.22 Dr. Jack Kevorkian and... 00:02:08.26\00:02:10.69 Yes, I forgot, he is a Michigan. 00:02:10.73\00:02:12.43 And Dr. Kevorkian, 00:02:12.46\00:02:13.80 I think actually had to go to jail 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.46 because there were issues involved 00:02:15.50\00:02:17.37 in some of his administrations of death. 00:02:17.40\00:02:19.90 And... 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.27 Well, you know, he was proving a point, 00:02:21.30\00:02:23.84 he trying to prove a point, 00:02:23.87\00:02:25.24 but I think anybody 00:02:25.27\00:02:26.61 that was watching his whole career 00:02:26.64\00:02:28.34 could see that this particular doctor 00:02:28.38\00:02:30.31 had sort of an unhealthy relationship with death. 00:02:30.35\00:02:33.42 Yeah, but is that something where we as society should go? 00:02:33.45\00:02:37.22 Should we have more euthanasia? 00:02:37.25\00:02:39.49 Well. 00:02:39.52\00:02:40.86 Well, what should the church say about that? 00:02:40.89\00:02:42.42 It's your interview show and I'm asking you questions. 00:02:42.46\00:02:44.89 What should we do? 00:02:44.93\00:02:46.26 Yeah. 00:02:46.29\00:02:48.63 Well, it's something that we're not gonna have 00:02:48.66\00:02:51.73 a definitive answer here, 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.47 but it needs to be part of the mix 00:02:53.50\00:02:55.70 because these issues of life and death 00:02:55.74\00:02:57.41 and the involvement of society 00:02:57.44\00:03:00.44 and more ominously of governing authorities. 00:03:00.48\00:03:04.28 And remember, the church in the Middle Ages 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.88 was one of the governing authorities 00:03:06.92\00:03:08.98 and horrible abuses were perpetrated 00:03:09.02\00:03:11.25 upon the families of suicide... 00:03:11.29\00:03:13.72 Yes. 00:03:13.76\00:03:15.09 For example. 00:03:15.12\00:03:16.46 So it's not an abstraction. 00:03:16.49\00:03:17.99 I think it's still is a black mark as well. 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.86 And then, as far as the church being opposed to progress, 00:03:19.89\00:03:26.37 early doctors can only find out about the human body 00:03:26.40\00:03:29.57 by grave robbing... 00:03:29.60\00:03:30.94 Yeah. 00:03:30.97\00:03:32.31 Which had severe penalties both from, 00:03:32.34\00:03:35.04 from around the church and several things, 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.35 so it's a funny thing, but like I say, 00:03:37.38\00:03:40.22 at the end of the day, 00:03:40.25\00:03:41.58 I have no question that we're in an age 00:03:41.62\00:03:45.45 that's very knowledgeable 00:03:45.49\00:03:46.82 but as far as its view of the human body, 00:03:46.86\00:03:49.82 it's become very utilitarian 00:03:49.86\00:03:52.43 and the mystery is disappearing. 00:03:52.46\00:03:54.70 Yeah, the mystery, 00:03:54.73\00:03:56.06 but there's still a huge mystery in divine. 00:03:56.10\00:03:57.43 And, you know, when you and I talk about Christianity 00:03:57.47\00:03:58.97 and many non-Christians watching this program 00:03:59.00\00:04:02.00 and it's worth mentioning 00:04:02.04\00:04:03.37 that in practically every belief system, 00:04:03.41\00:04:05.57 I can see or had any contact with, 00:04:05.61\00:04:08.64 they all have a myth 00:04:08.68\00:04:10.08 that we somehow came from the gods 00:04:10.11\00:04:11.65 or the stars or something. 00:04:11.68\00:04:13.25 Yeah. 00:04:13.28\00:04:15.22 It's inherent in humanity to see us 00:04:15.25\00:04:17.55 as above the animal creation there's something special. 00:04:17.59\00:04:20.82 But how do you cling to that when, you know, you can watch, 00:04:20.86\00:04:26.56 you know, the blood and murder of any TV show, 00:04:26.59\00:04:29.90 it just makes us like little doves to be blown away, 00:04:29.93\00:04:32.70 medical programs and you see everything sliced away 00:04:32.73\00:04:35.67 and we sort of just... 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.81 It's no wonder that people are falling 00:04:37.84\00:04:39.31 for the Android, the lure of androids 00:04:39.34\00:04:43.24 and the visionary "visionaries" among us. 00:04:43.28\00:04:47.22 And they're talking about, 00:04:47.25\00:04:48.58 you know, basically plugging us into a computer 00:04:48.62\00:04:50.92 and merging a human being with the computer program. 00:04:50.95\00:04:54.72 Like being in the matrix, so... 00:04:54.76\00:04:56.99 I mean. 00:04:57.03\00:04:58.36 That not only imitates life, it influences life. 00:04:58.39\00:05:00.96 And the matrix was an interesting 00:05:01.00\00:05:03.06 popular convergence of what was slowly 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.57 occurring to people. 00:05:05.60\00:05:06.94 And, of course, the philosophers 00:05:06.97\00:05:08.30 grabbled with it long time ago. 00:05:08.34\00:05:09.67 What is reality? 00:05:09.70\00:05:11.04 What's real? Yeah. 00:05:11.07\00:05:13.91 You know, Plato, 00:05:13.94\00:05:15.68 seem sort of quite now his idea of what's real? 00:05:15.71\00:05:18.05 Is it the cave or the shadow or the real chair 00:05:18.08\00:05:22.22 that sits somewhere beyond what we think is reality? 00:05:22.25\00:05:24.82 Yeah. 00:05:24.85\00:05:26.49 And so there's a very real moral issue at play 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.99 with all of these elements, 00:05:30.03\00:05:31.36 whether it's abortion or euthanasia. 00:05:31.39\00:05:34.06 There's Religious Freedom Act because you're dealing 00:05:34.10\00:05:36.00 with the will and religious faiths. 00:05:36.03\00:05:39.03 You didn't mention it before, 00:05:39.07\00:05:40.40 but even how you treat the dead 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.20 does different religious groups have quite certain ideas 00:05:42.24\00:05:47.74 on how the dead should be treated. 00:05:47.78\00:05:49.28 Not all religions would be happy with, you know, 00:05:49.31\00:05:51.95 with your organs given to benefit another person. 00:05:51.98\00:05:54.55 Yeah or even be cremated for some people, 00:05:54.58\00:05:57.85 of some religious faith traditions, cremation is... 00:05:57.89\00:06:00.76 You know, they all go to Valhalla. 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.56 Yeah. 00:06:02.59\00:06:05.59 But it's, you know, 00:06:05.63\00:06:07.60 there's no way we can come to the end of this, 00:06:07.63\00:06:09.63 but I think we're doing a service to our viewers 00:06:09.66\00:06:11.73 to raise the questions on this. 00:06:11.77\00:06:13.60 It's not simple. 00:06:13.64\00:06:16.07 I think as an overall package, it's very sobering. 00:06:16.10\00:06:21.11 Yeah. There's some bad things. 00:06:21.14\00:06:22.48 I don't think God intended us to be killing one another 00:06:22.51\00:06:27.55 even in the womb. 00:06:27.58\00:06:29.65 No. 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.12 The only thing that I've said in Liberty magazine, 00:06:31.15\00:06:33.42 I throw it in as cues now and then, 00:06:33.46\00:06:36.16 it bemuses us is probably the best word to me 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.76 that in the United States and I've in my lifetime, 00:06:38.79\00:06:42.13 the abortion thing has gone from almost a non issue 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.53 or a backroom scandal 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.67 that we don't want to know about 00:06:46.70\00:06:48.87 to a Supreme Court decision and a regular occurrence. 00:06:48.90\00:06:53.51 And further than that, you know, 00:06:53.54\00:06:55.04 murders of doctors by Christian zealots and so on. 00:06:55.08\00:06:59.21 And my gut feeling is that it's even though it's legal, 00:06:59.25\00:07:02.38 it's gone semi-underground 00:07:02.42\00:07:03.75 and across the some southern states 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.72 are coming up with heart beat laws 00:07:05.75\00:07:08.36 and all the rest that are really a way 00:07:08.39\00:07:10.56 to both bypass the Supreme Court 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.50 and provoke it into a reconsideration. 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.00 Well, and the governor by of Virginia 00:07:16.03\00:07:17.70 going on TV saying, well, they will deliver the baby 00:07:17.73\00:07:21.50 and then they'll be a discussion 00:07:21.54\00:07:22.90 about what to do with the baby that was just delivered. 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.41 But what kind of discussion is there 00:07:26.44\00:07:27.98 when you have a baby there? 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.78 Well, I think you can't divorce this 00:07:29.81\00:07:32.75 from your cosmic view, 00:07:32.78\00:07:34.85 the value of life and God and so on. 00:07:34.88\00:07:38.39 And that comes easy to Christians, 00:07:38.42\00:07:39.75 but what about the Cossacks 00:07:39.79\00:07:41.76 as well as other groups in history. 00:07:41.79\00:07:43.79 It was their standard practice 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.03 to put a child out in the cold water 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.76 and if he died, newborn, that was cleansed the race. 00:07:47.80\00:07:51.43 I believe in the early Roman times 00:07:51.47\00:07:54.30 you could do the practice of exposure 00:07:54.34\00:07:55.80 for up to a month's time. 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.17 Yeah. 00:07:57.21\00:07:58.54 In one month old and, but you know, 00:07:58.57\00:07:59.97 that's part of what Jesus came for. 00:08:00.01\00:08:01.51 He set all that on His head. 00:08:01.54\00:08:02.98 Right. 00:08:03.01\00:08:04.35 And then He even said some radical things 00:08:04.38\00:08:05.71 about suffered little children 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.08 to come to Me and forbid them not. 00:08:07.12\00:08:09.55 And then He said even the most radical thing 00:08:09.58\00:08:11.82 unless you become as little children 00:08:11.85\00:08:13.56 you shall not see the kingdom. 00:08:13.59\00:08:14.92 He didn't say unless you become a fetus. 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.56 No, He didn't say become a fetus but I'm... 00:08:16.59\00:08:19.89 Although it says before you were 00:08:19.93\00:08:21.93 in your mother's womb I knew you. 00:08:21.96\00:08:23.30 Yeah, before you were in mother's womb 00:08:23.33\00:08:24.93 I knew you, but when, at Jesus' time, 00:08:24.97\00:08:30.24 is it the society, secular society 00:08:30.27\00:08:32.57 that was practicing exposure? 00:08:32.61\00:08:33.94 Yeah. 00:08:33.98\00:08:35.31 There were groups practicing children sacrifice. 00:08:35.34\00:08:38.18 Though those things aren't smile. 00:08:38.21\00:08:40.52 My belief system is that 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.52 those things aren't smiled upon. 00:08:42.55\00:08:43.95 You know, I think child sacrifice, 00:08:43.99\00:08:45.52 most of the world sees that that was 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.26 an age of barbarism and superstition. 00:08:47.29\00:08:49.72 But others today are some of what we talked about. 00:08:49.76\00:08:54.56 We just see it as a Darwinian natural selection process 00:08:54.60\00:08:59.20 and we're strengthening the race 00:08:59.23\00:09:00.97 by some of these things. 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.34 Yeah, they strengthened the race 00:09:02.37\00:09:03.71 by getting rid of Jews in World War II. 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.14 Yes. 00:09:05.17\00:09:06.51 No, I don't buy that kind of stuff. 00:09:06.54\00:09:07.88 That's right, I'm in total disagreement 00:09:07.91\00:09:10.21 and then if the issue of eugenics 00:09:10.25\00:09:12.58 and the issue of population control, 00:09:12.61\00:09:16.58 I'm about freedom and freedom of liberty, 00:09:16.62\00:09:19.15 and freedom of choice. 00:09:19.19\00:09:21.52 But when your rights are interfering 00:09:21.56\00:09:23.06 with a third party or another person, 00:09:23.09\00:09:25.29 that's when you need to take another look at it. 00:09:25.33\00:09:28.26 That's true. 00:09:28.30\00:09:29.63 Now there's just so many ways this discussion goes 00:09:29.66\00:09:33.64 and I really hope 00:09:33.67\00:09:35.10 that our listeners have thought a little bit about it. 00:09:35.14\00:09:37.14 But the parting shot 00:09:37.17\00:09:38.51 before I give you another chance to talk, 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.88 on the abortion thing, 00:09:40.91\00:09:42.24 what does bemuse me a bit, 00:09:42.28\00:09:43.61 the Roman Catholics to their credit 00:09:43.65\00:09:45.28 were the first major church group of this country 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.98 that really made a big deal about it. 00:09:48.02\00:09:50.22 And now that's been picked up by others, 00:09:50.25\00:09:53.42 and particularly mainline Protestants, 00:09:53.46\00:09:56.26 but I know there's a difference 00:09:56.29\00:09:58.33 in why Roman Catholics was so fired up 00:09:58.36\00:10:01.13 because they had a view of original sin, 00:10:01.16\00:10:04.80 an infant baptism unless you are baptized, 00:10:04.83\00:10:07.17 you know you're in trouble. 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.57 We don't have that same view. 00:10:09.60\00:10:11.01 So what if you don't share that theology, 00:10:11.04\00:10:13.88 does that mean that you would see 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.04 the evil of abortion the same way? 00:10:16.08\00:10:18.25 It's debatable. 00:10:18.28\00:10:19.61 Yeah. 00:10:19.65\00:10:20.98 What I'm happier with is 00:10:21.02\00:10:22.38 when you cut to the chase and say, 00:10:22.42\00:10:24.02 any gratuitous killing of life is opposed to God's principle, 00:10:24.05\00:10:28.66 and then you don't need to say as, you know, 00:10:28.69\00:10:30.03 is it the heartbeat or is it 00:10:30.06\00:10:31.39 when there's movement quickening or whatever? 00:10:31.43\00:10:34.06 Don't you think? 00:10:34.10\00:10:35.43 So what's your takeaway. 00:10:35.46\00:10:36.97 You know, 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.33 you be my sounding board for a few minutes. 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.94 Yeah, that is my takeaway. 00:10:40.97\00:10:42.97 You know, in my view, 00:10:43.00\00:10:46.61 God doesn't want people to be killing each other, 00:10:46.64\00:10:49.91 and the value of human life is very, very important to God. 00:10:49.94\00:10:56.89 Before He knew us when we were in our mother's womb 00:10:56.92\00:11:00.22 even been before we were born. 00:11:00.26\00:11:02.62 The very first recognition of Jesus as Messiah 00:11:02.66\00:11:09.20 was from a, what we might scientists call today 00:11:09.23\00:11:12.07 a fetus in Elizabeth's womb. 00:11:12.10\00:11:14.90 The child was rolling in the Bible record. 00:11:14.94\00:11:17.34 So from my perspective, 00:11:17.37\00:11:18.71 it's very clear that life needs to be valued, 00:11:18.74\00:11:21.34 and where there's a problem, 00:11:21.38\00:11:23.21 where you're going to harm somebody else 00:11:23.24\00:11:26.82 that's when the law should kick in 00:11:26.85\00:11:29.08 and provide some balancing rights there. 00:11:29.12\00:11:34.52 There's a powerful scene at the end of the gospels 00:11:34.56\00:11:37.23 that a few filmmakers have tried to bring to life. 00:11:37.26\00:11:41.40 But the words are powerful, 00:11:41.43\00:11:42.76 where Jesus around the Passover table 00:11:42.80\00:11:45.40 with His disciples breaks the bread and He says, 00:11:45.43\00:11:48.84 "This is My body given for you." 00:11:48.87\00:11:53.84 Now I don't buy into some theological views 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.64 that would sort of transfer the actual existence to God 00:11:56.68\00:12:01.45 to any remembrance of that. 00:12:01.48\00:12:03.52 But I do believe that that's an illustration 00:12:03.55\00:12:06.99 of the very sacredness of the human existence. 00:12:07.02\00:12:10.13 He, God could put Himself in a human form 00:12:10.16\00:12:13.80 in ways we don't understand. 00:12:13.83\00:12:15.63 We know God's Word tells us 00:12:15.66\00:12:18.37 that we are fearfully and wonderfully made 00:12:18.40\00:12:20.64 and that our bodies are the temple of God. 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.27 At the very least, that means 00:12:23.30\00:12:25.07 that we should look on matters of life and death and of origin 00:12:25.11\00:12:28.84 like in the abortion situation and euthanasia, 00:12:28.88\00:12:32.78 we should look at this with extreme caution 00:12:32.81\00:12:36.75 and indeed, reverence for life. 00:12:36.79\00:12:40.59 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:12:40.62\00:12:43.76
