Welcome to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:26.39\00:00:28.16 This is your program 00:00:28.19\00:00:29.69 designed to bring you up-to-date 00:00:29.72\00:00:31.43 on religious liberty events, thinking analysis, 00:00:31.46\00:00:35.90 and so you can become knowledgeable 00:00:35.93\00:00:37.87 about these very real events in the US and around the world. 00:00:37.90\00:00:41.27 My name is Lincoln Steed, editor of Liberty magazine, 00:00:41.30\00:00:45.17 and my guest on the program is Charles Steinberg, 00:00:45.21\00:00:48.34 attorney and vice president 00:00:48.38\00:00:50.65 of the Northwest Religious Liberty Association. 00:00:50.68\00:00:53.92 And... 00:00:53.95\00:00:56.25 I'm gonna put you on the spot. 00:00:56.28\00:00:57.79 What does life mean to you? 00:00:57.82\00:00:59.79 What does life mean to me? 00:00:59.82\00:01:01.56 You know, Lincoln, 00:01:01.59\00:01:02.92 in my Jewish tradition and Jewish heritage... 00:01:02.96\00:01:05.16 L'chaim, isn't it? 00:01:05.19\00:01:06.53 L'chaim, it's a life. 00:01:06.56\00:01:09.16 And then looking through all sorts of different analysis 00:01:09.20\00:01:13.64 by different rabbis over the years 00:01:13.67\00:01:15.57 where during the Inquisition, 00:01:15.60\00:01:18.67 it would be better to convert from Judaism 00:01:18.71\00:01:22.54 to different faith rather than to die 00:01:22.58\00:01:26.01 because life is worth preserving... 00:01:26.05\00:01:27.42 Yes, it's interesting moral conundrum. 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.98 Yeah, even though those Jews that refused to convert 00:01:30.02\00:01:33.52 would refer to them as marranos, 00:01:33.56\00:01:34.92 sort of pigs and, 00:01:34.96\00:01:38.16 and then, in my own view, from my perspective, 00:01:38.19\00:01:41.70 life happened when I was born. 00:01:41.73\00:01:44.27 But then when I look at the biblical view, 00:01:44.30\00:01:47.77 even the child inside Elizabeth's womb, 00:01:47.80\00:01:54.14 reacted at being near Messiah. 00:01:54.18\00:01:56.11 So these are great questions, you know, 00:01:56.14\00:01:59.65 as give birth and there's a living soul. 00:01:59.68\00:02:03.18 And... 00:02:03.22\00:02:04.55 Well, even if you say that, what is the soul? 00:02:04.59\00:02:07.26 I think you're getting it to the abortion issue 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.26 in the United States. 00:02:09.29\00:02:11.99 But what do other countries do with abortion? 00:02:12.03\00:02:15.20 I heard a presidential candidate 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.56 recently say that we need to have abortion more 00:02:16.60\00:02:19.73 in third world countries to help them 00:02:19.77\00:02:21.44 with their climate change problems and economy. 00:02:21.47\00:02:24.07 A candidate? 00:02:24.11\00:02:25.44 A candidate. 00:02:25.47\00:02:26.81 Well, it's interesting you say that 00:02:26.84\00:02:28.18 because the Liberty board recently 00:02:28.21\00:02:29.54 I had an article that in the end 00:02:29.58\00:02:31.18 they found unpalatable that I couldn't run it. 00:02:31.21\00:02:35.28 It was talking about different injections, 00:02:35.32\00:02:39.82 and inoculations, and serums 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.22 that were given to people, 00:02:42.26\00:02:43.59 and I can remember and I stated it 00:02:43.63\00:02:47.70 maybe 30 years ago in India. 00:02:47.73\00:02:51.57 Pharmaceutical companies were working with the government 00:02:51.60\00:02:54.04 to inoculate people against 00:02:54.07\00:02:56.40 some of the diseases at the time. 00:02:56.44\00:02:58.51 And it turned out, came out very openly, 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.88 but after the fact that they were coordinating 00:03:00.91\00:03:03.71 with a government plan too for population control, 00:03:03.75\00:03:06.61 and they were sterilizing. 00:03:06.65\00:03:07.98 For sterilization without knowing. 00:03:08.02\00:03:11.02 Yes, which crosses another moral line as well. 00:03:11.05\00:03:14.92 We have to believe as people of faith, 00:03:18.49\00:03:21.43 and it's buried within the religious liberty concept 00:03:21.46\00:03:25.20 that human beings have natural dignity 00:03:25.23\00:03:27.20 that life is just precious, you don't dispense with it. 00:03:27.24\00:03:31.11 No. 00:03:31.14\00:03:32.47 But I do think the abortion debate 00:03:32.51\00:03:35.54 in the public sphere has gotten tangled up 00:03:35.58\00:03:38.98 with all sorts of religious understandings. 00:03:39.01\00:03:44.09 Have to be valid but I mean, what is the state, 00:03:44.12\00:03:46.45 is the state getting into discussions of what, 00:03:46.49\00:03:48.82 where is the soul and so on. 00:03:48.86\00:03:50.19 It has to have a more utilitarian view of it. 00:03:50.23\00:03:54.06 And I am not pro-abortion, 00:03:54.10\00:03:56.56 but I don't think it's profitable 00:03:56.60\00:03:59.67 to run the idea of when is it the life? 00:03:59.70\00:04:02.20 When is it a human life? 00:04:02.24\00:04:04.21 You know, in the Jewish Old Testament, 00:04:04.24\00:04:07.24 there was actually something else going on 00:04:07.28\00:04:08.78 but the story of Onan 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.58 takes it back before conception. 00:04:11.61\00:04:13.38 Yes. Yeah. 00:04:13.42\00:04:15.45 In fact, 00:04:15.48\00:04:17.62 the Monty Python film once, you remember that? 00:04:17.65\00:04:20.06 I do remember Monty Python. 00:04:20.09\00:04:22.96 Every sperm is precious. 00:04:22.99\00:04:25.03 Yeah. 00:04:25.06\00:04:26.39 And I see it all as God's spectrum of life. 00:04:26.43\00:04:29.46 God is the life giver. 00:04:29.50\00:04:30.83 Yes. 00:04:30.87\00:04:32.20 And I think anybody 00:04:32.23\00:04:33.57 that gratuitously cuts off life, 00:04:33.60\00:04:35.80 whether it's cutting down a tree, 00:04:35.84\00:04:38.64 and I'm not a tree hugger, 00:04:38.67\00:04:40.01 but we're custodians of the earth. 00:04:40.04\00:04:42.54 So if you cut down a tree just for the thrill 00:04:42.58\00:04:46.55 or because it's there, will stamp on an ant, 00:04:46.58\00:04:49.78 and I'm not a Hindu or an ancient mystic, 00:04:49.82\00:04:54.32 or terminate a life even at the earliest stage. 00:04:54.36\00:04:58.03 I think you've set yourself against the God of heaven. 00:04:58.06\00:05:01.03 Well, you know, with regard to life 00:05:01.06\00:05:06.50 when the sperm fertilizes the egg, 00:05:06.53\00:05:09.84 I think you have life there. 00:05:09.87\00:05:11.94 Well, you have life, but is it human? 00:05:11.97\00:05:13.81 Is it protected life under the US Constitution? 00:05:13.84\00:05:16.31 Well... 00:05:16.34\00:05:17.68 Obviously not currently. 00:05:17.71\00:05:19.48 No, and I don't think in totality, 00:05:19.51\00:05:23.32 it's been a good thing to bring in abortion 00:05:23.35\00:05:26.15 into the modern era. 00:05:26.19\00:05:27.76 Because, you know, when Roe v Wade came along, 00:05:27.79\00:05:30.76 it was not really that long 00:05:30.79\00:05:33.63 after the horrors of World War II, 00:05:33.66\00:05:36.13 which was the total play out of the eugenics debate. 00:05:36.16\00:05:41.84 Dr. Josef Mengele, the medical experiments, 00:05:41.87\00:05:46.11 the horrors visited on the Jews, gypsies, 00:05:46.14\00:05:50.11 mentally retarded folks, is just terrible, 00:05:50.15\00:05:53.01 terrible things in the name of medical science. 00:05:53.05\00:05:56.02 Yeah, they were the immediate recipients 00:05:56.05\00:05:58.29 but it was broader than... 00:05:58.32\00:05:59.65 I mean it, the animist against Jews in that case 00:05:59.69\00:06:03.66 as well as the gypsies resulted in this new philosophy 00:06:03.69\00:06:08.40 being used full blown on them, 00:06:08.43\00:06:09.76 but the whole world was enamored with eugenics, 00:06:09.80\00:06:12.87 the US was too whether they were lobotomizations, 00:06:12.90\00:06:17.77 and sterilizations, 00:06:17.81\00:06:19.14 and other gross experiments carried out, 00:06:19.17\00:06:22.38 suited the state they could find out something 00:06:22.41\00:06:24.71 for their more well off citizens 00:06:24.75\00:06:27.15 that wouldn't hurt them, 00:06:27.18\00:06:28.52 but they were playing with lives, 00:06:28.55\00:06:30.15 killing people on occasion. 00:06:30.19\00:06:32.39 And so, yes, 00:06:32.42\00:06:35.99 I don't think that the gratuitous abortions 00:06:36.02\00:06:40.73 then coming in a few decades later 00:06:40.76\00:06:42.66 it can be seen as in itself a positive thing. 00:06:42.70\00:06:47.34 I think on a certain level 00:06:47.37\00:06:48.84 and I'm getting myself into trouble here. 00:06:48.87\00:06:50.71 On a certain level, 00:06:50.74\00:06:54.61 it was part of a good move in recognizing 00:06:54.64\00:06:57.88 the autonomous rights of women 00:06:57.91\00:07:00.68 which had been sort of submerged to that point. 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.25 But along the way, 00:07:03.28\00:07:04.62 I think it sort of enabled 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.89 a diminution of the value of life. 00:07:07.92\00:07:10.39 I agree with that, 00:07:10.43\00:07:11.76 that it is a diminution of the value of life. 00:07:11.79\00:07:14.33 I know the autonomy of a woman, for example in there, 00:07:14.36\00:07:17.37 one of the political slogans, my body my choice. 00:07:17.40\00:07:20.84 What right do you as a man 00:07:20.87\00:07:23.17 or legislature executive 00:07:23.20\00:07:25.41 to tell me I can't have this medical treatment 00:07:25.44\00:07:27.74 from my doctor? 00:07:27.78\00:07:29.11 What right do you have in that? 00:07:29.14\00:07:30.48 And you remember what the reverse 00:07:30.51\00:07:31.85 was big families? 00:07:31.88\00:07:33.21 Yeah. 00:07:33.25\00:07:34.58 And that was a woman's role to be a child bearer. 00:07:34.62\00:07:37.65 Well, big families and then also 00:07:37.69\00:07:39.32 you've got to admit that there were a lot of 00:07:39.35\00:07:43.32 gruesome unhealthy medical clinics. 00:07:43.36\00:07:47.03 I call it back alley abortion as well. 00:07:47.06\00:07:48.63 Oh, yeah, yeah. 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.70 The other side of this argument is, 00:07:50.73\00:07:52.77 but you know, 00:07:52.80\00:07:54.14 if it ends in endangering the mother's life... 00:07:54.17\00:07:59.27 You know, there are different penalties 00:07:59.31\00:08:01.31 in the Bible if you, 00:08:01.34\00:08:02.68 if two men are quarreling and you hit a woman 00:08:02.71\00:08:05.35 and she ends up having a pregnant... 00:08:05.38\00:08:07.45 If you hit a pregnant woman 00:08:07.48\00:08:08.82 and she ends up having an abortion, 00:08:08.85\00:08:10.92 the child doesn't survive, that unintentional fight, 00:08:10.95\00:08:14.89 there's a different penalty. 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.26 Not the same as murdering an adult. 00:08:16.29\00:08:19.56 Yeah, it's a different penalty but we saw... 00:08:19.59\00:08:22.80 But you're a lawyer. 00:08:22.83\00:08:24.17 I'm a lawyer. 00:08:24.20\00:08:25.53 And I know the law looks at that, 00:08:25.57\00:08:26.97 if I'm civilly sued for wrongful death, of course, 00:08:27.00\00:08:31.47 someone's death in some way or if a guy... 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.84 Yeah, I guess the same thing. 00:08:33.88\00:08:35.21 If a company is through its poisonous product 00:08:35.24\00:08:37.98 has caused someone's death. 00:08:38.01\00:08:39.41 When you look at damages, 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.38 you look at what that person is earning, 00:08:41.42\00:08:44.42 or son has the potential but you're looking at the 00:08:44.45\00:08:47.72 in essence at the value, you quantify the value. 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.06 Quantify by a number. 00:08:50.09\00:08:51.43 Now, and what do you do with a clump of cells 00:08:51.46\00:08:57.03 that has not taken a single breath yet, 00:08:57.07\00:08:59.17 not had a single thought? 00:08:59.20\00:09:01.50 There's a trial going on in California 00:09:01.54\00:09:04.51 regardless of what side you're on the abortion. 00:09:04.54\00:09:05.91 And what does it lost if it never existed? 00:09:05.94\00:09:08.98 It did exist. 00:09:09.01\00:09:10.35 And according to the Bible it is, yeah. 00:09:10.38\00:09:11.71 You know what I mean, as a sentient being. 00:09:11.75\00:09:13.08 Yeah, as what we would think a sentient being is. 00:09:13.11\00:09:16.18 There's a battle going on in California, 00:09:16.22\00:09:18.65 or were some undercover reporters 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.86 that had taped operatives of Planned Parenthood, 00:09:20.89\00:09:23.79 they're auctioning off and selling body parts 00:09:23.83\00:09:25.73 and that's actually on tape. 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.40 I mean, when you're looking at levels of proof of evidence 00:09:27.43\00:09:31.67 you have two people that see a car accident. 00:09:31.70\00:09:34.00 One says the light was red, 00:09:34.04\00:09:35.37 the other says the light was green. 00:09:35.40\00:09:36.81 There's no video evidence of that. 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.47 Nowadays, we probably do with Big Brother 00:09:38.51\00:09:40.08 watching everything we do. 00:09:40.11\00:09:42.14 But in this case, there's videotaped 00:09:42.18\00:09:45.58 evidence of them selling 00:09:45.61\00:09:47.68 baby parts on video. 00:09:47.72\00:09:53.29 They were once 00:09:53.32\00:09:56.42 a living organism within the mom. 00:09:56.46\00:10:00.03 Well, you know, our whole society 00:10:00.06\00:10:03.73 is deep into this sort of thinking 00:10:03.77\00:10:08.20 on a level that very few people have trouble with, you know, 00:10:08.24\00:10:10.61 there's an accident, someone's body is dismembered, 00:10:10.64\00:10:13.68 the eye goes here and the heart there and all... 00:10:13.71\00:10:17.21 When there's an accident, it's a death. 00:10:17.25\00:10:20.62 And I'm going to stand for a platform, 00:10:20.65\00:10:22.08 death is unnatural. 00:10:22.12\00:10:23.45 Yeah. 00:10:23.49\00:10:24.82 After Eden, death became a natural part. 00:10:24.85\00:10:26.35 I don't have an issue with that, 00:10:26.39\00:10:27.72 but I'm just saying the lines have blurred 00:10:27.76\00:10:30.49 because we've adopted in the modern world 00:10:30.53\00:10:33.40 because of scientific advance 00:10:33.43\00:10:34.83 and that a more utilitarian view 00:10:34.86\00:10:36.73 of what a human organism is. 00:10:36.77\00:10:38.67 They're atheists and forgive me viewers, 00:10:38.70\00:10:41.57 if you're an atheist watching this 00:10:41.60\00:10:42.94 and you're offended by what I'm about to say. 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.54 There are scientific atheists that have published in journals 00:10:44.57\00:10:47.34 that said that without the moral basis 00:10:47.38\00:10:50.95 of a church or some antiquated organization, 00:10:50.98\00:10:55.92 humans should throw off those cells. 00:10:55.95\00:11:00.76 In the 70s there was a science fiction movie 00:11:00.79\00:11:03.19 about Soylent Green. 00:11:03.22\00:11:04.66 Yeah, I remember it. 00:11:04.69\00:11:06.03 And now there's an atheist saying 00:11:06.06\00:11:08.96 there are benefits to humans and in my state Washington, 00:11:09.00\00:11:12.33 we just passed a law saying 00:11:12.37\00:11:13.84 it's lawful for you to compost your human body. 00:11:13.87\00:11:16.77 By the way, I was at a health food store 00:11:16.81\00:11:18.54 the other day and there's a product called soylent. 00:11:18.57\00:11:21.04 No way! 00:11:21.08\00:11:23.08 Somebody has a poor memory of it. 00:11:23.11\00:11:24.95 Yeah, they have a very poor memory. 00:11:24.98\00:11:26.48 It wasn't green, but it was soylent. 00:11:26.51\00:11:28.42 But I believe that human body is sacred. 00:11:28.45\00:11:33.42 I believe that we should never see it selling. 00:11:33.46\00:11:35.69 It's not sacred in itself, 00:11:35.72\00:11:37.06 but it's the temple to the Creator God. 00:11:37.09\00:11:40.93 Yeah. 00:11:40.96\00:11:42.30 That we have a sacred trust with it. 00:11:42.33\00:11:44.00 Yeah, we're made in His image. 00:11:44.03\00:11:45.90 And when you want to desecrate that, 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.67 okay, so after death after death, 00:11:48.70\00:11:50.54 and you know, using body parts here and there 00:11:50.57\00:11:53.07 for the benefit of science or a person can see again 00:11:53.11\00:11:56.54 or a person gets a kidney or person gets a heart 00:11:56.58\00:12:00.42 Those are great breakthroughs in medical science 00:12:00.45\00:12:02.22 and family celebrate that 00:12:02.25\00:12:03.79 that even though their loved one is gone, 00:12:03.82\00:12:05.55 they have the memory of maybe helping 00:12:05.59\00:12:06.99 19 or 20 other people through an organ donor program. 00:12:07.02\00:12:10.99 That's different than taking a fetus 00:12:11.03\00:12:12.59 and selling the body part, okay. 00:12:12.63\00:12:14.30 Remember, in China, 00:12:14.33\00:12:17.30 there's a roaring trade in prisoners' body parts. 00:12:17.33\00:12:20.84 And there's plenty of evidence that to meet demand, 00:12:20.87\00:12:24.97 they will condemn more, more prisoners 00:12:25.01\00:12:28.11 to fill the pipeline at certain times. 00:12:28.14\00:12:30.95 And some of the horrors to get the organs correctly, 00:12:30.98\00:12:34.68 like including skin. 00:12:34.72\00:12:37.05 They do it before they did. 00:12:37.09\00:12:39.25 So that's the outer fringe. 00:12:39.29\00:12:42.62 But it exists in the middle, 00:12:42.66\00:12:44.73 there's there in some poor countries, 00:12:44.76\00:12:46.70 there are clearly documented cases 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.26 of people selling obviously not organs, like a kidney. 00:12:49.30\00:12:54.34 They can sell a kidney 00:12:54.37\00:12:57.47 and even in the US there are transactions 00:12:57.51\00:13:02.71 like surrogate parenting and all the rest. 00:13:02.74\00:13:06.15 They're basically selling the use of your body 00:13:06.18\00:13:10.35 and all the rest so it's been commercialized. 00:13:10.39\00:13:12.85 The morality is being sucked out of it. 00:13:12.89\00:13:16.02 Yeah. 00:13:16.06\00:13:17.39 And so I don't see that as separate 00:13:17.43\00:13:19.19 from how we regard the fetus and yes, 00:13:19.23\00:13:23.37 we need to go back and I think 00:13:23.40\00:13:25.40 while there's a certain logic of free will, 00:13:25.43\00:13:29.20 recognizing free will behind the abortion thing, 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.57 the net effect has been 00:13:31.61\00:13:32.94 an incredible diminishing of respect 00:13:32.97\00:13:37.35 for what a human being is. 00:13:37.38\00:13:38.88 Yeah, incredible reduction of that. 00:13:38.91\00:13:42.18 We'll take a break now and come back 00:13:42.22\00:13:43.62 and continue this discussion. 00:13:43.65\00:13:44.99 So stay with us. 00:13:45.02\00:13:46.35
