Welcome back to our discussion 00:00:03.53\00:00:05.73 with Charles Steinberg, an attorney. 00:00:05.77\00:00:08.24 Charles, Vice President 00:00:08.27\00:00:11.97 of the Northwest Religious Liberty Association. 00:00:12.01\00:00:16.04 We've been talking about your background 00:00:16.08\00:00:18.11 and why you became a lawyer and what that. 00:00:18.15\00:00:20.78 And I think there's a lot to unpack yet. 00:00:20.82\00:00:22.62 Now I'm gonna get into your soul. 00:00:22.65\00:00:26.35 I know you pretty well. Yeah. 00:00:26.39\00:00:27.92 But I think our viewers need to see some more of it. 00:00:27.96\00:00:30.69 What was... 00:00:30.73\00:00:32.06 Again, let's talk more about 00:00:32.09\00:00:37.17 why religious liberty is so important to you 00:00:37.20\00:00:39.73 and how you can put that awareness 00:00:39.77\00:00:43.54 into action through the law? 00:00:43.57\00:00:46.98 So religious liberty is very important to me 00:00:47.01\00:00:50.18 and I'm very passionate about it, 00:00:50.21\00:00:52.01 because it is basically the essence 00:00:52.05\00:00:55.92 of living in a free society. 00:00:55.95\00:00:57.72 Yeah. 00:00:57.75\00:00:59.09 We don't have a state sponsored religion 00:00:59.12\00:01:00.96 in the United States. 00:01:00.99\00:01:02.82 We're free to believe how we want to. 00:01:02.86\00:01:05.13 Yeah. 00:01:05.16\00:01:06.49 And when policies are put in place 00:01:06.53\00:01:08.33 by the government that isolates somebody 00:01:08.36\00:01:10.30 on the basis of religion, 00:01:10.33\00:01:12.23 isolates somebody on the basis of other things 00:01:12.27\00:01:17.07 that a person can't control within their own sphere, 00:01:17.11\00:01:23.21 it can marginalize a group of society. 00:01:23.24\00:01:25.01 What you're saying is 00:01:25.05\00:01:26.38 your sense of fairness was troubled... 00:01:26.41\00:01:27.75 My sense of fair... 00:01:27.78\00:01:29.12 My sense of fairness is troubled by it. 00:01:29.15\00:01:30.49 Yeah. 00:01:30.52\00:01:31.85 And also as a born being, 00:01:31.89\00:01:34.09 born and raised in the Jewish faith, 00:01:34.12\00:01:36.29 I was very aware of the holocaust 00:01:36.32\00:01:38.46 and very aware of government, 00:01:38.49\00:01:41.16 organized governments enacting laws 00:01:41.20\00:01:43.33 that targeted a particular group 00:01:43.37\00:01:45.03 based on their religious faith. 00:01:45.07\00:01:46.87 And then also very much aware 00:01:46.90\00:01:48.74 of how important it is 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.94 to be able to have freedom of belief. 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.31 Yeah. 00:01:54.34\00:01:56.68 I could give you an example, a few examples, 00:01:56.71\00:01:58.91 but tell me in the U.S. history, 00:01:58.95\00:02:01.82 do you think groups have been targeted 00:02:01.85\00:02:03.92 because of their faith? 00:02:03.95\00:02:06.09 Well, of course, people have been targeted 00:02:06.12\00:02:07.49 because of their faith. 00:02:07.52\00:02:08.86 You look in the 1870s, 1880s, the Mormon Church 00:02:08.89\00:02:13.40 has been terribly persecuted 00:02:13.43\00:02:15.76 by the U.S. Government and even the U.S. Cavalry 00:02:15.80\00:02:18.37 riding down on them because of their faith. 00:02:18.40\00:02:20.94 There are other arguments 00:02:20.97\00:02:22.30 that could be had both ways on that, 00:02:22.34\00:02:24.01 but it's very compelling. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.44 I read an article in Liberty Magazine, 00:02:25.47\00:02:27.68 I think it was like 15 years ago, 00:02:27.71\00:02:30.08 about the persecution of the... 00:02:30.11\00:02:31.45 Yeah, it's one of the ones that I put in. 00:02:31.48\00:02:32.81 About further persecution of Mormons. 00:02:32.85\00:02:35.45 And it was two phases, 00:02:35.48\00:02:36.82 and I think you got both of them. 00:02:36.85\00:02:38.45 It was in Illinois and they brought 00:02:38.49\00:02:41.39 some of it on themselves by their actions. 00:02:41.42\00:02:44.23 It doesn't mean they deserve what they got, 00:02:44.26\00:02:46.26 but, you know, they were forming 00:02:46.29\00:02:47.63 their own militias and very exclusive 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.80 and perhaps not regarding their neighbors well. 00:02:50.83\00:02:56.57 And so, violence broke out often 00:02:56.60\00:03:00.51 between Mormon communities and the surrounding community. 00:03:00.54\00:03:05.61 And at one point the Governor of Illinois 00:03:05.65\00:03:07.98 actually signed an extermination word... 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.55 Mm-hmm. 00:03:10.59\00:03:11.92 Which is an amazing thing 00:03:11.95\00:03:13.29 and what we think of as a claim 00:03:13.32\00:03:17.66 to be a democratic country of freedom. 00:03:17.69\00:03:21.23 But the second phase 00:03:21.26\00:03:22.60 that I don't think too many people know about. 00:03:22.63\00:03:24.00 When they escaped 00:03:24.03\00:03:25.70 and fled out of what was really 00:03:25.73\00:03:27.44 the United States to Utah territory 00:03:27.47\00:03:30.27 that was beyond the reach. 00:03:30.31\00:03:31.81 Jurisdiction, yeah. 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.17 Yeah. 00:03:33.21\00:03:34.54 And set up Salt Lake City, 00:03:34.58\00:03:35.91 then I wish I could remember the president, 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.28 but they were sold to the administration 00:03:38.31\00:03:41.18 as a looming threat. 00:03:41.22\00:03:42.68 Mm-hmm. 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.05 And so an expeditionary force of U.S. Military 00:03:44.09\00:03:47.79 was set up and sent there with 00:03:47.82\00:03:49.89 and I've read the instructions from the president, 00:03:49.92\00:03:52.46 they were to rape and repine. 00:03:52.49\00:03:55.46 Yeah. 00:03:55.50\00:03:56.97 And it's an amazing story about 00:03:57.00\00:03:58.63 how this full-fledged U.S. Military force 00:03:58.67\00:04:02.87 came over the mountains and were prepared to attack. 00:04:02.90\00:04:05.97 And the Mormons decided 00:04:06.01\00:04:07.44 they would wait and see what happens. 00:04:07.48\00:04:08.81 So they and militia line 00:04:08.84\00:04:10.18 both sides of the street and this U.S. Army Force 00:04:10.21\00:04:14.62 under full display with the band and everything 00:04:14.65\00:04:16.89 marched down the main street 00:04:16.92\00:04:18.35 passed the gunmen and out the other side 00:04:18.39\00:04:21.22 and it all sort of fizzled up. 00:04:21.26\00:04:22.59 Yeah. 00:04:22.62\00:04:23.96 But it's a good example 00:04:23.99\00:04:25.93 of where religious tension can lead 00:04:25.96\00:04:28.30 even in a country dedicated to religious freedom. 00:04:28.33\00:04:31.27 Well, and part of my passion 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.13 comes from also our founding of the United States. 00:04:33.17\00:04:36.91 In my view, we've had several different foundings. 00:04:36.94\00:04:40.21 We had an economic founding with the Virginia Company, 00:04:40.24\00:04:43.31 which is the charter to go out 00:04:43.35\00:04:45.58 and make money for England and send it back to England. 00:04:45.61\00:04:47.85 And that was the original impetus, 00:04:47.88\00:04:49.62 not as the myth says to escape religious persecution, 00:04:49.65\00:04:52.62 that was sort of interwoven. 00:04:52.65\00:04:53.99 And then we had a puritanical founding that to be... 00:04:54.02\00:04:56.73 to purify and practice religion pure of the Church of England 00:04:56.76\00:05:01.53 and fleeing the Church of England's persecution, 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.80 so they can purify their faith for just them 00:05:03.83\00:05:06.20 and persecute everybody else that believes differently. 00:05:06.23\00:05:08.30 Yes. 00:05:08.34\00:05:09.67 But then we have this interesting founding 00:05:09.70\00:05:11.04 by Roger Williams in Rhode Island 00:05:11.07\00:05:13.27 that talked about a garden of separation 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.74 between the State, and the Garden of Eden, 00:05:15.78\00:05:20.48 and soul liberty. 00:05:20.52\00:05:22.12 And these things are passionate concepts to me 00:05:22.15\00:05:25.42 that when you have 00:05:25.45\00:05:27.06 a government controlling a church, 00:05:27.09\00:05:29.26 it's not a good thing. 00:05:29.29\00:05:31.16 And when you have a church controlling a government, 00:05:31.19\00:05:33.83 it's not a good thing. 00:05:33.86\00:05:35.56 A lot of blood has been shed 00:05:35.60\00:05:37.50 over many centuries on those issues 00:05:37.53\00:05:40.30 and that's what the United States system 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.04 is so beautiful about 00:05:42.07\00:05:44.47 is that we don't have that. 00:05:44.51\00:05:47.14 And you'd ask for another example 00:05:47.18\00:05:49.08 of persecution or government persecution so. 00:05:49.11\00:05:51.21 Yeah, if you could think of... 00:05:51.25\00:05:53.65 Back in the early 1900s in Oregon... 00:05:53.68\00:05:58.02 in the State of Oregon, 00:05:58.05\00:05:59.72 believe it or not, the Ku Klux Klan 00:05:59.75\00:06:01.52 had a large political foothold and a large following. 00:06:01.56\00:06:05.49 And they actually kept control 00:06:05.53\00:06:07.93 of the governor's office, the legislature, 00:06:07.96\00:06:11.60 and they were very anti-Catholic. 00:06:11.63\00:06:13.54 Well, that was the three-legged-stool was... 00:06:13.57\00:06:16.20 was anti-Jew, anti-Catholic, and racist. 00:06:16.24\00:06:20.84 Yes. 00:06:20.88\00:06:22.21 And they actually passed the law saying that, 00:06:22.24\00:06:25.31 "You couldn't wear any religious garb 00:06:25.35\00:06:27.82 if you were a school teacher in Oregon." 00:06:27.85\00:06:30.22 Of course, they wanted to get out, 00:06:30.25\00:06:31.75 to weed out any Catholic school teachers. 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.39 And through the efforts 00:06:34.42\00:06:35.82 of the Northwest Religious Liberty Association, 00:06:35.86\00:06:38.19 we were able to get that very interesting law. 00:06:38.23\00:06:41.36 That holdover... 00:06:41.40\00:06:42.73 The holdover era of a bygone era repealed, 00:06:42.76\00:06:46.00 and it's by reaching out and working with other people, 00:06:46.03\00:06:49.34 other groups to form coalitions, 00:06:49.37\00:06:51.61 to get things done in the name of religious liberty 00:06:51.64\00:06:53.51 that helps protect us all, Lincoln. 00:06:53.54\00:06:55.38 Yeah, and even as you say that 00:06:55.41\00:06:57.88 it's worth taking a little aside here. 00:06:57.91\00:07:01.12 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:07:01.15\00:07:03.05 has a very clear prophetic expectation, 00:07:03.08\00:07:06.89 the end of days 00:07:06.92\00:07:08.26 which Revelation presents to all Christians. 00:07:08.29\00:07:12.03 And, you know, we are very cautious 00:07:12.06\00:07:16.56 of ecumenical movements, 00:07:16.60\00:07:18.80 or a blurring, or adjoining, or an amalgamation, 00:07:18.83\00:07:21.80 or a syncretism between religious faith. 00:07:21.84\00:07:24.41 But it's worth remembering and reminding our own members 00:07:24.44\00:07:27.71 that when you deal with religious liberty, 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.64 there's everything to gain from cooperative, 00:07:29.68\00:07:35.88 charitable relations between all faiths. 00:07:35.92\00:07:38.15 That's not ecumenical in the bad sense. 00:07:38.19\00:07:41.26 Yeah. 00:07:41.29\00:07:42.62 You don't get things done if... 00:07:42.66\00:07:45.09 You don't get things done 00:07:45.13\00:07:46.46 unless you get a broad coalition of support. 00:07:46.49\00:07:49.06 And if you're the one pointing the finger, 00:07:49.10\00:07:50.80 there's a saying, 00:07:50.83\00:07:52.17 "If you point a finger at somebody, 00:07:52.20\00:07:53.54 there are three fingers pointing back at you." 00:07:53.57\00:07:55.07 And if you're afraid to talk to somebody 00:07:55.10\00:07:59.74 because they're Catholic, 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.11 if you're afraid to talk to somebody 00:08:01.14\00:08:02.48 because they're Muslim, 00:08:02.51\00:08:04.18 if you're afraid to talk to somebody 00:08:04.21\00:08:05.61 because they're Jewish, where is your faith? 00:08:05.65\00:08:07.72 Right. 00:08:07.75\00:08:09.18 And our leaders, 00:08:09.22\00:08:10.99 I'm excited in the northwest part 00:08:11.02\00:08:13.12 of the United States, 00:08:13.15\00:08:14.56 our leaders are happy to go out 00:08:14.59\00:08:15.92 and talk to other people, 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.29 other people of their faiths, 00:08:17.33\00:08:18.66 and active and involved in legislation, 00:08:18.69\00:08:21.13 active and involved in talking to our legislators 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.20 and our representatives. 00:08:23.23\00:08:24.67 And it helps to know other people 00:08:24.70\00:08:27.64 because there's often prejudice and suspicion 00:08:27.67\00:08:31.14 comes from lack of knowledge. 00:08:31.17\00:08:33.71 In the worst case between countries, 00:08:33.74\00:08:35.41 you know, in the old days, 00:08:35.44\00:08:36.78 you know, the Barbarian was just a stranger, 00:08:36.81\00:08:38.51 you didn't understand anything about him. 00:08:38.55\00:08:40.52 So he became a mystical dangerous sort of a creature. 00:08:40.55\00:08:43.52 So I think this dialogue is very good. 00:08:43.55\00:08:47.66 You can understand the theological position, 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.79 but what... 00:08:49.82\00:08:51.16 To me is the bottom line, 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.53 religious liberties are for everybody 00:08:52.56\00:08:54.20 or if it's not for everybody, everybody's at threat. 00:08:54.23\00:08:57.27 If there's one exception 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.83 that establishes a dynamic that could mean your, 00:08:59.87\00:09:03.81 yours or my church could be next, 00:09:03.84\00:09:05.27 or my faith, or even just me individually, 00:09:05.31\00:09:07.88 I won't have the right to stand on conscience. 00:09:07.91\00:09:10.15 Yeah. 00:09:10.18\00:09:11.51 And that's one of the beautiful things 00:09:11.55\00:09:13.01 about our system in the United States, 00:09:13.05\00:09:14.98 you have the ability to stand on conscience. 00:09:15.02\00:09:18.29 But it's easier to do that 00:09:18.32\00:09:20.39 when you're not afraid of talking to your neighbor, 00:09:20.42\00:09:22.32 when you're not afraid of enlisting an ally 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.26 to help you with an issue. 00:09:24.29\00:09:25.63 Yeah. 00:09:25.66\00:09:27.00 So as far as your involvement 00:09:27.03\00:09:28.86 with the Northwest Religious Liberty Association 00:09:28.90\00:09:31.23 and in another program, 00:09:31.27\00:09:32.60 I'd like to get some examples 00:09:32.63\00:09:33.97 of some of the things you've done. 00:09:34.00\00:09:35.34 But, you know, what's your takeaways? 00:09:35.37\00:09:36.84 How has it helped you 00:09:36.87\00:09:39.34 and confirming this early concern for justice, 00:09:39.37\00:09:43.85 and why you got into being a lawyer 00:09:43.88\00:09:45.68 in the first place? 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.05 Do you see a sort of fulfillment 00:09:47.08\00:09:48.88 to your life's direction 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.45 in working for religious liberty? 00:09:51.49\00:09:53.69 I do see great fulfillment in working 00:09:53.72\00:09:55.49 with my life's direction for religious liberty 00:09:55.52\00:09:58.29 and that being able to help one person, 00:09:58.33\00:10:01.26 being able to work in the context 00:10:01.30\00:10:03.87 of the framework to change laws, 00:10:03.90\00:10:08.37 to make it be greater protection 00:10:08.40\00:10:10.34 for people of faith, 00:10:10.37\00:10:11.71 either sometimes in land use decisions 00:10:11.74\00:10:14.94 that are isolating on a church 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.85 or sometimes protecting an inmate's right 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.51 to both be a Native American culturally, 00:10:19.55\00:10:22.45 and also be able to have fellowship with Christians. 00:10:22.48\00:10:26.76 Believe it or not, that was an issue 00:10:26.79\00:10:28.12 in Washington State 00:10:28.16\00:10:29.49 where this fellow that was in prison, 00:10:29.52\00:10:33.09 he wasn't able to have fellowship with Christians, 00:10:33.13\00:10:35.70 because the chaplain there said that, 00:10:35.73\00:10:38.17 "Because he's Native American, 00:10:38.20\00:10:39.53 he must only worship animals and spirits." 00:10:39.57\00:10:42.17 And we were able to intercede in that 00:10:42.20\00:10:45.27 and get a new rule allowing Native Americans 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.51 to register as dual, a Native American culturally, 00:10:48.54\00:10:51.88 but they want to worship with Christians 00:10:51.91\00:10:53.48 and they were able to do that. 00:10:53.52\00:10:55.08 It actually became a model that was rolled out 00:10:55.12\00:10:57.25 across different prisons throughout the country. 00:10:57.29\00:11:00.06 And it helps freedom of conscience 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.06 because that's what God really wants. 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.73 Freedom of conscience 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.19 so that people can make a clear choice 00:11:05.23\00:11:06.96 for what's important, 00:11:07.00\00:11:09.10 serving God or serving man. 00:11:09.13\00:11:13.84 No music for this stand up, but in my head, 00:11:13.87\00:11:17.51 I can hear the music to a Neil Diamond song, 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.11 The Story of My Life, 00:11:20.14\00:11:21.78 because he had a romantic spin on it 00:11:21.81\00:11:23.35 and for him, it began, 00:11:23.38\00:11:26.01 the day you came and it ended the day you left. 00:11:26.05\00:11:29.22 But for people of faith, of course, 00:11:29.25\00:11:32.15 life in its best sense begins 00:11:32.19\00:11:35.12 with a commitment to serve the Lord. 00:11:35.16\00:11:37.26 And I think that's extended in a powerful way 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.63 working for religious freedom. 00:11:39.66\00:11:42.10 As it was said by the Apostle Paul, 00:11:42.13\00:11:45.27 "The message that we to give is the gospel of liberty, 00:11:45.30\00:11:51.14 a message of freedom and deliverance." 00:11:51.17\00:11:54.34 And as we've reviewed 00:11:54.38\00:11:56.81 some of the experiences of my guests 00:11:56.85\00:11:58.91 and how and why he became not only a lawyer, 00:11:58.95\00:12:01.35 but a religious liberty activist. 00:12:01.38\00:12:03.39 I'm reminded that all of our life stories 00:12:03.42\00:12:06.52 as varied and as different as they are, 00:12:06.55\00:12:09.22 and coming from both sides of the mountains, 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.96 the cold side and the warm said, 00:12:11.99\00:12:14.60 we can all hit toward the service side. 00:12:14.63\00:12:18.27 God has something for each of us. 00:12:18.30\00:12:20.34 And I believe whether we're Christian, 00:12:20.37\00:12:23.14 whether we're Muslim, Hindu or whatever, 00:12:23.17\00:12:26.37 in our own way, we can recognize 00:12:26.41\00:12:28.38 that we are working for the divine 00:12:28.41\00:12:30.95 as we work for the freedom of conscience, 00:12:30.98\00:12:34.05 the freedom to believe, disbelieve, 00:12:34.08\00:12:37.02 and to follow conscience in any way 00:12:37.05\00:12:39.19 that may occur to an individual 00:12:39.22\00:12:40.96 is the highest ideal for a life commitment. 00:12:40.99\00:12:45.06 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed.
