Welcome back to the Liberty Insider, 00:00:03.73\00:00:05.53 before the break, with the guest, Dennis Seaton, 00:00:05.57\00:00:08.10 we were in the middle 00:00:08.14\00:00:10.01 of the whole immigration discussion, 00:00:10.04\00:00:12.44 which has a strong moral component, 00:00:12.47\00:00:14.51 I think, which we can focus on. 00:00:14.54\00:00:17.15 But inadvertent and very necessarily, 00:00:17.18\00:00:20.75 we talk about 00:00:20.78\00:00:22.12 what the political context and so on. 00:00:22.15\00:00:23.52 But, you know, we're talking religious liberty 00:00:23.55\00:00:26.15 and the role of faith and faithful people 00:00:26.19\00:00:28.89 and commenting on this, 00:00:28.92\00:00:30.46 we got to avoid 00:00:30.49\00:00:31.83 a strong avert political demands, 00:00:31.86\00:00:34.73 I think that's middling 00:00:34.76\00:00:36.77 more than just the rights of individual citizens, 00:00:36.80\00:00:39.17 which this is what I do think at the moment. 00:00:39.20\00:00:42.87 The American citizenry 00:00:42.90\00:00:45.57 needs to be more informed on this 00:00:45.61\00:00:47.68 and not fall prey to jingoistic us versus them thinking. 00:00:47.71\00:00:53.15 And I've heard spokespeople, 00:00:53.18\00:00:57.65 in particular for the conservatism, 00:00:57.69\00:01:01.46 lightly saying things that make my blood run cold. 00:01:01.49\00:01:04.89 I remember, a conservative commentatoress, 00:01:04.93\00:01:11.33 which will identify her pretty clearly. 00:01:11.37\00:01:13.40 But she was giving bogus information on the incidents 00:01:13.44\00:01:16.81 of mass shootings by illegal immigrants. 00:01:16.84\00:01:20.28 And I didn't believe her statistic to start with, 00:01:20.31\00:01:22.44 but she said that most of the shootings 00:01:22.48\00:01:24.95 are performed 00:01:24.98\00:01:26.31 by first or second-generation immigrants. 00:01:26.35\00:01:30.85 And I thought about that. 00:01:30.89\00:01:32.22 That's a horrific statement. 00:01:32.25\00:01:34.36 First of all, it's not true in a statistical level, 00:01:34.39\00:01:37.33 but what's 00:01:37.36\00:01:38.69 the second-generation immigrant? 00:01:38.73\00:01:40.30 Well, if you want to ask... 00:01:40.33\00:01:42.36 So the rabid talk is encouraging the idea 00:01:42.40\00:01:46.84 of who is a real American? 00:01:46.87\00:01:51.57 Who really belongs here? 00:01:51.61\00:01:54.21 A second generation, 00:01:54.24\00:01:55.58 you can even be president as a second generation. 00:01:55.61\00:01:58.51 That's called a citizen, a native-born citizen. 00:01:58.55\00:02:01.55 So to me, it's shades of othering, 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.95 like happened in Germany. 00:02:04.99\00:02:06.65 You know, you could be... 00:02:06.69\00:02:08.02 Your great grandfather could have a part Jewish blood, 00:02:08.06\00:02:10.63 you're not tainted. 00:02:10.66\00:02:11.99 You know, that's a horrible 00:02:12.03\00:02:15.00 determination by lineage of who you are. 00:02:15.03\00:02:19.63 I always thought that when someone raised their hand 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.64 and swore to be a good citizen, and was inducted in, 00:02:21.67\00:02:25.47 got all the papers, they were in. 00:02:25.51\00:02:28.48 So we're really creating a real, 00:02:28.51\00:02:31.15 what it reminds to, 00:02:31.18\00:02:32.51 they're not in if they're this person 00:02:32.55\00:02:34.15 from somewhere they don't like, that's what's going up. 00:02:34.18\00:02:36.72 It's not with everyone, 00:02:36.75\00:02:38.59 but there's an undercurrent of this, 00:02:38.62\00:02:40.56 that's very... 00:02:40.59\00:02:43.76 For one of a better word, races, but it's more origin, 00:02:43.79\00:02:47.56 where this person comes from, unacceptable to certain groups. 00:02:47.60\00:02:52.93 And that needs to be fought against 00:02:52.97\00:02:54.30 because it's inherently un-American 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.27 and it's inherently un-Christian, inhumane. 00:02:56.30\00:03:02.14 And that kind of goes, 00:03:02.18\00:03:03.51 I agree with you that we have to... 00:03:03.55\00:03:06.78 That that's what's going on. 00:03:06.82\00:03:08.98 And I think that that's where I kind of just hinted at it 00:03:09.02\00:03:12.02 or didn't quite explain it as well as you have 00:03:12.05\00:03:15.89 that the idea that our country 00:03:15.92\00:03:17.73 is divided on different political issues, 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.30 and immigration is one of them. 00:03:20.33\00:03:22.46 And because churches 00:03:22.50\00:03:24.63 with no matter which organization, 00:03:24.67\00:03:28.50 the citizens of the United States 00:03:28.54\00:03:30.01 are attending those churches, 00:03:30.04\00:03:31.37 then the churches are divided as well. 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.61 And so I think that we need to find some way 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.31 to recognize that we have responsibilities. 00:03:37.35\00:03:39.61 Yeah. 00:03:39.65\00:03:40.98 And when we look at what's happening 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.02 on the southern border 00:03:43.05\00:03:44.39 because that's where most of the contentiousness is, 00:03:44.42\00:03:48.52 for whatever reason. 00:03:48.56\00:03:50.86 And when you have those discussions, 00:03:50.89\00:03:53.83 whether it's in a political setting 00:03:53.86\00:03:55.66 or whether it's in a church setting, 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.60 you're going to have people 00:03:57.63\00:03:58.97 on both sides of the discussion. 00:03:59.00\00:04:03.51 It's both sides of the wall. 00:04:03.54\00:04:04.97 Yeah, pretty much. 00:04:05.01\00:04:06.71 And so I think that that's why I said that... 00:04:06.74\00:04:10.75 And I've come to the realization 00:04:10.78\00:04:14.05 that the people... 00:04:14.08\00:04:15.42 No matter what side you're on, 00:04:15.45\00:04:17.35 it's going to be difficult to change. 00:04:17.39\00:04:19.35 And sometimes, these sides separate families 00:04:19.39\00:04:22.96 'cause they separate churches, 00:04:22.99\00:04:24.39 they separate people in general. 00:04:24.43\00:04:26.23 And so that's not what I think we're called to do. 00:04:26.26\00:04:29.36 We need to find ways to bring people together. 00:04:29.40\00:04:31.50 What I find disconcerting 00:04:31.53\00:04:34.94 about the current iteration of this long-term debate, 00:04:34.97\00:04:39.97 it gets back almost to the beginning of the nation, 00:04:40.01\00:04:45.38 is the role some... 00:04:45.41\00:04:50.05 Maybe they're not church-based, 00:04:50.09\00:04:51.42 but some religious-identified organizations 00:04:51.45\00:04:55.32 have played in buying for the wall and all the rest 00:04:55.36\00:04:59.63 'cause there's a certain alliance 00:04:59.66\00:05:01.53 between politically active Christian factions 00:05:01.56\00:05:04.67 and the administration. 00:05:04.70\00:05:06.03 So they've identified with the new initiative. 00:05:06.07\00:05:10.87 And I find it problematic that we see that today 00:05:10.91\00:05:14.11 where the last time around that it was a huge issue 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.85 was the Sanctuary Movement in the '70s 00:05:16.88\00:05:20.82 with the Cambodian refugees in particular. 00:05:20.85\00:05:22.18 Oh, yes, yes. 00:05:22.22\00:05:23.55 And churches of many denominations, 00:05:23.59\00:05:26.59 not all of them, but churches 00:05:26.62\00:05:28.39 across the denominational spread, 00:05:28.42\00:05:31.16 stepped out and offered literal sanctuary 00:05:31.19\00:05:34.43 for some of those illegal immigrants, 00:05:34.46\00:05:36.23 not forever because we can't... 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.43 They can't... 00:05:38.47\00:05:39.80 Like they couldn't do a signed deal 00:05:39.83\00:05:41.60 where you live years on end in the church prison. 00:05:41.64\00:05:44.27 But they were sheltered in the church on an old model 00:05:44.31\00:05:47.54 that comes from the Middle Ages and back to the Old Testament, 00:05:47.58\00:05:50.45 where you go into the temple, 00:05:50.48\00:05:51.95 and grab the horns of the altar, 00:05:51.98\00:05:53.31 and you were saved. 00:05:53.35\00:05:54.68 So they were there while the community 00:05:54.72\00:05:58.92 and the government sort of gathered, 00:05:58.95\00:06:00.36 it's brethren decided what to do in a rational way 00:06:00.39\00:06:03.43 rather than, you know, deport immediately, 00:06:03.46\00:06:06.56 and it worked out well. 00:06:06.59\00:06:08.20 I don't remember any lingering antipathy 00:06:08.23\00:06:13.80 or social damage that was done, 00:06:13.84\00:06:16.84 but it helped facilitate an integration 00:06:16.87\00:06:20.54 and a more rational government approach. 00:06:20.58\00:06:22.01 But this time around, the church hasn't stepped up 00:06:22.04\00:06:24.68 in the same moral way. 00:06:24.71\00:06:26.05 If anything, elements of church organizations 00:06:26.08\00:06:29.98 are in the hunt, 00:06:30.02\00:06:32.32 they are the aggressor on this. 00:06:32.35\00:06:35.06 It's not dynamically good for conscience 00:06:35.09\00:06:38.56 and for Christian witness in my view. 00:06:38.59\00:06:41.36 And what you're talking about right now 00:06:41.40\00:06:43.70 or what you're proposing... 00:06:43.73\00:06:45.07 I think there should be, among other things, 00:06:45.10\00:06:48.47 a moral outrage shouted across the land 00:06:48.50\00:06:52.11 at a number of things, 00:06:52.14\00:06:53.48 including this policy of separation which continues. 00:06:53.51\00:06:56.75 They say it's not but it's continuous. 00:06:56.78\00:06:58.98 And you even mentioned that some families, 00:06:59.01\00:07:02.55 they don't even know how to get there. 00:07:02.58\00:07:04.19 They've lost the record, they lost in the system. 00:07:04.22\00:07:07.26 That's an injustice of the first order. 00:07:07.29\00:07:09.52 Yes, and I don't... 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.13 And let's give them the benefit, 00:07:14.16\00:07:15.76 not intended, but it happened, and it could be stopped. 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.77 Well, but yes, and it's not... 00:07:18.80\00:07:23.37 It's one thing for it to happen. 00:07:23.41\00:07:24.84 It's another thing for it to really not try to be undone. 00:07:24.87\00:07:29.48 But so I think that the issue is for us. 00:07:29.51\00:07:34.05 Now if we are going to hold people accountable, 00:07:34.08\00:07:37.09 the only way that you can hold accountable, 00:07:37.12\00:07:40.19 elected officials, is by the vote. 00:07:40.22\00:07:44.59 And the way things are happening 00:07:44.63\00:07:46.09 politically in the United States, 00:07:46.13\00:07:47.46 now voting is a really huge issue 00:07:47.50\00:07:49.26 because of how districts are drawn 00:07:49.30\00:07:52.37 and how things happen. 00:07:52.40\00:07:53.74 So political people will make political decisions, 00:07:53.77\00:07:56.60 and then there's consequences for that. 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.27 But there's one thing 00:07:59.31\00:08:01.61 that we as citizens of the United States, 00:08:01.64\00:08:04.11 as members of religious organizations, 00:08:04.15\00:08:06.25 can do outside of voting that will make a difference. 00:08:06.28\00:08:10.65 And that's hold our elected officials 00:08:10.69\00:08:14.29 accountable by asking them to partner with you 00:08:14.32\00:08:18.49 to make a difference in these particular situations. 00:08:18.53\00:08:20.90 And back to what you'd said in another program, 00:08:20.93\00:08:24.23 by making that contact, 00:08:24.27\00:08:25.60 let your personal views on this be known. 00:08:25.63\00:08:28.77 Yes. 00:08:28.80\00:08:30.14 The feedbacks are very important. 00:08:30.17\00:08:32.24 On the federal level, we had a church liaison there, 00:08:32.27\00:08:35.44 and he came back early on in his tenure, very startled 00:08:35.48\00:08:39.11 because we'd encourage people to send in emails 00:08:39.15\00:08:42.42 on some particular legislation, 00:08:42.45\00:08:44.62 and he got a comment from the legislators. 00:08:44.65\00:08:46.79 We've been inundated 00:08:46.82\00:08:49.29 with the comments and emails and all. 00:08:49.32\00:08:51.66 This turned out that I already have got like 00:08:51.69\00:08:53.50 10 or 15 or something, enough to get their attention. 00:08:53.53\00:08:57.67 And I'm glad you brought that up, Lincoln, 00:08:57.70\00:08:59.17 because that particular thing that you just pointed out 00:08:59.20\00:09:02.94 is totally accurate. 00:09:02.97\00:09:04.84 If a legislator gets more than five letters 00:09:04.87\00:09:09.34 or emails or phone calls... 00:09:09.38\00:09:10.98 And it's a good thing 00:09:11.01\00:09:12.35 because it means they are responsive 00:09:12.38\00:09:14.35 to the feedback that you and I are capable of doing. 00:09:14.38\00:09:16.89 But it also shows that the feedback 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.72 that we are giving them 00:09:18.75\00:09:20.09 has heard and paid attention to. 00:09:20.12\00:09:21.92 Yes. 00:09:21.96\00:09:23.29 So all is not hopeless 00:09:23.32\00:09:25.69 in this challenge to the nation, I believe, 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.80 which is legal and practical for the government. 00:09:28.83\00:09:31.47 But it has a moral component. 00:09:31.50\00:09:33.67 There can be moral growth 00:09:33.70\00:09:35.04 I think in approaching it positively, don't you think? 00:09:35.07\00:09:39.01 I think that God is making a... 00:09:39.04\00:09:42.21 a significant effort 00:09:45.21\00:09:46.88 to communicate with people around the world 00:09:46.92\00:09:49.48 and in all religious organizations 00:09:49.52\00:09:52.02 to realize that we've come to a time in earth's history 00:09:52.05\00:09:54.69 where we need to be involved, 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.06 not only with our elected officials, 00:09:56.09\00:09:58.06 but with the people that they serve 00:09:58.09\00:09:59.73 so that we can find out what their issues are 00:09:59.76\00:10:01.90 and that we can come together as a group of people 00:10:01.93\00:10:04.27 to make things better in our community. 00:10:04.30\00:10:09.37 When talking about immigration, 00:10:09.40\00:10:10.87 it used to be pretty much de rigueur 00:10:10.91\00:10:14.24 to mention Emma Lazarus's famous poem 00:10:14.28\00:10:18.45 inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty 00:10:18.48\00:10:20.75 about the tired, and your poor, 00:10:20.78\00:10:22.48 and all needy that could come and find shelter. 00:10:22.52\00:10:26.76 But I'd rather go a little further back 00:10:26.79\00:10:29.82 to the Old Testament 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.19 where God is speaking to the escaped slaves, 00:10:31.23\00:10:35.53 left Egypt on their way to a better land. 00:10:35.56\00:10:37.73 He says, "Remember, I am your God 00:10:37.77\00:10:40.27 that brought you out of Egypt." 00:10:40.30\00:10:41.84 And that was repeated over and over again 00:10:41.87\00:10:43.94 all throughout the Old Testament. 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.94 We've all come from somewhere, 00:10:45.97\00:10:49.08 especially in the United States, 00:10:49.11\00:10:50.45 this new land that was settled 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.65 as a land of promise by Protestants and others, 00:10:52.68\00:10:56.42 leaving an old world of persecution. 00:10:56.45\00:10:58.95 And while there are realities of law 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.49 and practicalities of running a country, 00:11:01.52\00:11:04.69 a little charity 00:11:04.73\00:11:06.06 and a little Christian sensibility
