Welcome back to the Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.00\00:00:06.13 Before the break, 00:00:06.17\00:00:07.50 we were in a discussion that is fraught 00:00:07.54\00:00:10.51 with peril in our society, 00:00:10.54\00:00:12.07 but an issue of the day that, that more and more... 00:00:12.11\00:00:15.84 When we talk about religious liberty and Christian, 00:00:15.88\00:00:18.11 particularly sensibilities and all of... 00:00:18.15\00:00:21.92 Muslims have strong issues on this topic, 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.39 particularly too. 00:00:24.42\00:00:25.85 But, you know, the growing... 00:00:25.89\00:00:29.06 civil rights, carve outs, 00:00:29.09\00:00:30.89 and social shifts 00:00:30.93\00:00:33.46 in favor of gay behavior and gay marriage 00:00:33.50\00:00:35.96 and so on is really meant that this, 00:00:36.00\00:00:38.47 it seems like an inevitable clash 00:00:38.50\00:00:41.04 between religious liberty, 00:00:41.07\00:00:43.41 and the new fans, civil rights, of this lifestyle. 00:00:43.44\00:00:49.38 I don't think it always has to be a neither odd situation. 00:00:49.41\00:00:53.21 There must be a way to defuse it a little 00:00:53.25\00:00:56.22 without acting offensively 00:00:56.25\00:00:57.65 and without compromising a faith position. 00:00:57.69\00:01:00.79 I think that individuals always have a right 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.19 to determine 00:01:06.23\00:01:07.76 who they're going to be friends with or... 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.73 Oh, absolutely. 00:01:10.77\00:01:12.13 Who they're going to associate with 00:01:12.17\00:01:13.67 or who they're going to choose to spend their time with. 00:01:13.70\00:01:16.34 However, I think that things change slightly, 00:01:16.37\00:01:18.67 from my perspective, anyway, 00:01:18.71\00:01:20.08 when you want a business and whether 00:01:20.11\00:01:21.94 or not you can discriminate against a person based on 00:01:21.98\00:01:25.15 whether or not you have 00:01:25.18\00:01:26.51 a theological difference between them. 00:01:26.55\00:01:28.75 Because the issue is with cake bakers, 00:01:28.78\00:01:32.05 and maybe this is just a simplistic way 00:01:32.09\00:01:33.62 of looking at it, 00:01:33.66\00:01:34.99 but if you're going to say 00:01:35.02\00:01:36.36 that the lifestyle of the LGBT community 00:01:36.39\00:01:42.20 is sinful, 00:01:42.23\00:01:43.77 and therefore you're not going to condone it 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.33 by doing a cake. 00:01:45.37\00:01:49.27 The question is, is that what other moral objection 00:01:49.30\00:01:53.88 are you going to have? 00:01:53.91\00:01:55.24 Are you not going to bake a cake 00:01:55.28\00:01:56.61 for people who choose to not live together 00:01:56.64\00:01:59.41 and they want to celebrate their 10th anniversary 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.68 and then choose not to be married, 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.32 and just be... 00:02:03.35\00:02:04.85 Live together which is a much more common issue today, 00:02:04.89\00:02:09.76 not only with young people, 00:02:09.79\00:02:11.13 but with people who've lost spouses. 00:02:11.16\00:02:13.40 They choose not to get married again legally, and... 00:02:13.43\00:02:17.23 By the way, while I'm thinking about it, 00:02:17.27\00:02:18.80 can I throw in two other real world situations 00:02:18.83\00:02:21.17 that I think would the absurd 00:02:21.20\00:02:23.74 on the face of a to refuse service, 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.21 but they're not radically different in concept. 00:02:25.24\00:02:27.64 What about a landscaper that's asked to landscape, 00:02:27.68\00:02:30.45 which is more than just square here, 00:02:30.48\00:02:32.91 whatever this is, you know, 00:02:32.95\00:02:35.08 designing and setting out a yard. 00:02:35.12\00:02:38.35 Such a person refuse to do it in for a household 00:02:38.39\00:02:42.96 that they disagree with their morality 00:02:42.99\00:02:45.26 or what an architect refused to design a home 00:02:45.29\00:02:48.86 for a gay couple, a Christian architect, 00:02:48.90\00:02:51.47 because they are offensive to him. 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.84 Well, I think you've chosen two really good examples 00:02:53.87\00:02:56.24 because both of those would be considered artistic 00:02:56.27\00:02:58.47 or could be. 00:02:58.51\00:02:59.84 That's why I chose them, exactly. 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.21 And so that is the main reason why the cake baker... 00:03:01.24\00:03:02.81 But it's very utilitarian. 00:03:02.84\00:03:04.38 And so why would the cake be any different? 00:03:04.41\00:03:07.28 Yes, there's, 00:03:07.32\00:03:08.65 there's an element of just not rote action, 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.99 you're investing yourself in the product. 00:03:12.02\00:03:14.79 But I don't see myself that, 00:03:14.82\00:03:17.46 you know, unless they object to saying, 00:03:17.49\00:03:19.19 you know, my dearly beloved or all that. 00:03:19.23\00:03:21.50 I don't know what they would put on cakes, 00:03:21.53\00:03:22.86 but, you know, the wording itself. 00:03:22.90\00:03:24.93 But then, again, 00:03:24.97\00:03:26.80 that's a straw man argument 00:03:26.84\00:03:28.17 because they hit a time you can't know 00:03:28.20\00:03:29.54 what the words are. 00:03:29.57\00:03:30.91 And that's its own issue probably 00:03:30.94\00:03:34.04 apart from whether you're doing the cake. 00:03:34.08\00:03:35.94 And I guess my point is that as a business owner, 00:03:35.98\00:03:40.42 it's difficult to ask a person when they come in and say, 00:03:40.45\00:03:44.25 "Are you married? 00:03:44.29\00:03:45.99 Are you living together?" 00:03:46.02\00:03:49.66 Do you drink alcohol? 00:03:49.69\00:03:52.13 Muslims would consider that offensive, 00:03:52.16\00:03:54.76 and so what other religious organizations. 00:03:54.80\00:03:58.47 And so, I think that that's when we're talking about 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.40 the public square and those sorts of things. 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.80 Now can you ask people not to come in to your store, 00:04:02.84\00:04:06.37 you can refuse service 00:04:06.41\00:04:07.74 because they're being belligerent and obnoxious? 00:04:07.78\00:04:09.98 Well, I suppose you could if you apply that across 00:04:10.01\00:04:12.91 all groups of people that come there. 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.15 But when you start saying that you can discriminate 00:04:15.18\00:04:17.52 based on your theological belief. 00:04:17.55\00:04:19.75 Where does that end? 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.16 Yes, I think it's corrosive 00:04:21.19\00:04:23.89 to normal civil interchange 00:04:23.93\00:04:28.80 and it's also corrosive to true spirituality. 00:04:28.83\00:04:31.07 And, you know, we don't know 00:04:31.10\00:04:33.64 how much of a party time guy Jesus was, 00:04:33.67\00:04:36.84 but we do know that He was severely criticized 00:04:36.87\00:04:39.64 for being a friend of publicans and sinners. 00:04:39.67\00:04:43.45 And fortunately for us, 00:04:43.48\00:04:45.35 that He was friendly to publicans and sinners. 00:04:45.38\00:04:47.22 I mean, He approached people where they were. 00:04:47.25\00:04:48.85 Yes. 00:04:48.88\00:04:50.22 But this is zero evidence. 00:04:50.25\00:04:51.79 You know, I'm just being facetious about... 00:04:51.82\00:04:53.29 What I mean is, I don't know the interchanging they had. 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.62 Right. 00:04:55.66\00:04:57.29 But it's foolish to think that Jesus was a wine brewer 00:04:57.33\00:05:02.16 and a drunken, you know, 00:05:02.20\00:05:04.83 profligate at parties. 00:05:04.87\00:05:06.20 No, of course not. 00:05:06.23\00:05:07.57 But He was around that sort of thing. 00:05:07.60\00:05:09.54 Even the party with Simon, 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.34 where the woman put the perfume, and He said, 00:05:11.37\00:05:13.78 that was a party of marginal repute, 00:05:13.81\00:05:18.28 but He was there. 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.05 I guess he showed up? Yes. 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.35 He made friends. 00:05:22.38\00:05:24.59 Since you've kind of steered it that way a little bit. 00:05:24.62\00:05:26.86 But we're looking at these particular issues. 00:05:26.89\00:05:31.09 And I talked with a young lady 00:05:31.13\00:05:36.23 that had two children walking in a community. 00:05:36.26\00:05:40.77 And as she was walking past one house, 00:05:40.80\00:05:42.87 the person called out, 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.31 "We wouldn't allow your type here," 00:05:46.34\00:05:49.54 not so long ago. 00:05:49.58\00:05:51.21 And she was a white female with mixed race children. 00:05:51.25\00:05:56.18 So she was obviously married to somebody 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.95 who was not too same as her. 00:05:57.99\00:06:01.52 And so that was in the early... 00:06:01.56\00:06:04.73 Well, since it's recently. 00:06:04.76\00:06:07.03 So the question is, 00:06:07.06\00:06:10.67 if we are like that, 00:06:10.70\00:06:15.00 the question that we, I think, have to ask ourselves 00:06:15.04\00:06:18.61 is have we really been touched 00:06:18.64\00:06:22.38 by the sacrifice that Jesus made? 00:06:22.41\00:06:24.25 Right. 00:06:24.28\00:06:25.61 This is what I'm trying to bring it back. 00:06:25.65\00:06:26.98 I mean, on one level, 00:06:27.02\00:06:28.35 it seems like a transactional religious liberty issue 00:06:28.38\00:06:31.52 in our society, and high morality, 00:06:31.55\00:06:34.12 and, you know, 00:06:34.16\00:06:36.02 and greatly unacceptable lifestyle, 00:06:36.06\00:06:38.86 you know, that's real. 00:06:38.89\00:06:40.23 And the judges and society having to deal with it, 00:06:40.26\00:06:43.06 but as a Christian, there's a spiritual element 00:06:43.10\00:06:49.07 to this that I think is easily ignored. 00:06:49.10\00:06:51.87 And in many things, 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.24 this just happens to be one issue. 00:06:53.27\00:06:55.01 And you mentioned that I've often given the example. 00:06:55.04\00:06:57.98 You run a business, 00:06:58.01\00:06:59.35 seems to me through that 00:06:59.38\00:07:00.72 door comes a grand succession of people 00:07:00.75\00:07:04.29 that are stealing from their employer, 00:07:04.32\00:07:06.35 people that are carjackers, 00:07:06.39\00:07:09.09 wife beaters, child abusers, 00:07:09.12\00:07:12.26 the whole gamut of human frailties and gross sins. 00:07:12.29\00:07:18.37 Where do you start to filter them for your acceptance 00:07:18.40\00:07:24.24 when you're running a, you know, public business. 00:07:24.27\00:07:26.57 It's fine in your life, you do associate greater 00:07:26.61\00:07:29.78 or lesser degrees. 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.15 I mean, you avoid evil. 00:07:31.18\00:07:32.61 I mean, it's one thing to, 00:07:32.65\00:07:34.42 you know, Jesus socialized with publicans and sinners, 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.75 but, you know, you don't just give your life over 00:07:37.79\00:07:40.79 to the wrong side of the tracks as a Christian. 00:07:40.82\00:07:43.86 You've got to monitor things. 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.23 And in the private life, 00:07:45.26\00:07:46.59 yes, you can make sure 00:07:46.63\00:07:47.96 you don't greatly live your life 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.63 in a bad environment. 00:07:50.67\00:07:53.10 But we can't afford to treat our fellow human beings, 00:07:53.13\00:07:58.41 any of them as lepers. 00:07:58.44\00:08:00.71 If we want them healed, we have to relate to them. 00:08:00.74\00:08:06.45 I think that we have a responsibility 00:08:06.48\00:08:09.05 to treat people like Jesus treats me, 00:08:09.08\00:08:11.69 not like He treated people in the Bible, 00:08:11.72\00:08:14.82 but how He treats me now. 00:08:14.86\00:08:16.69 And so based on what we believe that Jesus has done for us, 00:08:16.73\00:08:21.13 then I think that I have a responsibility 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.10 to treat others like Jesus treats me. 00:08:23.13\00:08:25.00 And I'll really throw a wrench into the thing on this. 00:08:25.03\00:08:29.70 This is a lifestyle choice 00:08:29.74\00:08:32.11 with high quotient of immorality 00:08:32.14\00:08:34.84 from a Bible point of view, 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.41 but the same dynamic can easily apply in the society 00:08:36.44\00:08:39.98 on religious behavior. 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.89 Someone keeps Sunday, 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.25 someone keeps Saturday, and you can... 00:08:45.29\00:08:47.02 It's been done. 00:08:47.06\00:08:48.39 You can be characterized as the grossest sinner, 00:08:48.42\00:08:51.29 the greatest danger to society 00:08:51.33\00:08:53.26 because you worship on a certain day. 00:08:53.29\00:08:56.33 It's kind of the bottom line for me in terms of 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.47 if you allow discrimination 00:08:58.50\00:09:00.77 based on your religious beliefs, 00:09:00.80\00:09:05.14 then it is going to, and can be, 00:09:05.17\00:09:08.84 and probably most likely will be 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.28 that at some point in time, for your religious beliefs 00:09:11.31\00:09:13.82 you're going to be discriminated. 00:09:13.85\00:09:15.18 But what I'm bringing the day of worship, 00:09:15.22\00:09:17.12 where that's happened, especially the further back 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.12 you get to the Middle Ages, 00:09:19.15\00:09:22.32 I will say it's my religious belief 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.13 to keep on worship on Saturday 00:09:24.16\00:09:26.90 as The Ten Commandments enjoins. 00:09:26.93\00:09:29.06 But it was characterized in those times, 00:09:29.10\00:09:31.53 no, you're not religious, 00:09:31.57\00:09:32.90 you're the greatest reprobate 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.07 and irreligious person 00:09:35.10\00:09:36.91 for not keeping the holy day. 00:09:36.94\00:09:38.67 So you're corrupt, 00:09:38.71\00:09:41.68 hell bound creature 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.04 just because you don't worship on Sunday. 00:09:43.08\00:09:45.45 It takes on that same sort of moral component 00:09:45.48\00:09:49.58 as some of these things we've started talking about, 00:09:49.62\00:09:51.92 not just as a theological difference. 00:09:51.95\00:09:55.72 We might see it is, 00:09:55.76\00:09:57.19 but in a black and white society, 00:09:57.23\00:09:59.96 to behave differently in regard to holy things, 00:10:00.00\00:10:04.13 put, makes you unclean on all levels. 00:10:04.17\00:10:07.54 And so I draw... 00:10:07.57\00:10:10.54 I think it's a direct parallel. 00:10:10.57\00:10:12.87 And I think that we kind of got a little bit away 00:10:12.91\00:10:15.11 from the cake baker, 00:10:15.14\00:10:16.48 but I think that 00:10:16.51\00:10:17.85 when we're looking at our role in society, 00:10:17.88\00:10:20.42 I think that it's our responsibility 00:10:20.45\00:10:21.88 as Christians to interact with people 00:10:21.92\00:10:25.75 in the same way that Jesus interacted with people 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.19 and to restore dignity to people in the same way 00:10:28.22\00:10:30.86 that He's restored dignity to me and everyone else. 00:10:30.89\00:10:33.76 And as we do that, 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.13 then we become closer to God and closer to our elect... 00:10:35.16\00:10:38.50 Closer to the people around us. 00:10:38.53\00:10:40.07 Reading in the Bible is certainly 00:10:42.50\00:10:43.94 some good examples of activists who made a difference. 00:10:43.97\00:10:47.11 And one of the most improbable was Saul of Tarsus. 00:10:47.14\00:10:50.85 Remember, the basic beginning of his career was very passive, 00:10:50.88\00:10:55.28 holding the courts for those that were doing a bad deed, 00:10:55.32\00:10:59.95 throwing stones at Stephen. 00:10:59.99\00:11:03.02 But once he got the message, 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.56 nothing could hold that man back. 00:11:05.59\00:11:08.40 Witnessing before kings and princes. 00:11:08.43\00:11:11.93 At one point 00:11:11.97\00:11:13.30 when he was witnessing and saying, you know, 00:11:13.34\00:11:14.67 I was not disobedient to that heavenly vision. 00:11:14.70\00:11:17.57 The King Agrippa I think it was, you're mad. 00:11:17.61\00:11:20.94 You know, you're mad. 00:11:20.98\00:11:22.34 He's doesn't mind being called mad 00:11:22.38\00:11:23.71 because he wanted to communicate. 00:11:23.75\00:11:26.05 And I think if more of us had a burning desire 00:11:26.08\00:11:30.62 to tell what's important to us, 00:11:30.65\00:11:32.89 and in this regard, religious liberty, 00:11:32.92\00:11:35.46 the sensibilities that make us Christians, 00:11:35.49\00:11:38.59 there would be no inhibition about talking to someone, 00:11:38.63\00:11:40.86 whether it's a legislator, or our neighbor, 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.60 or anybody in the community 00:11:43.63\00:11:45.57 because we're not forcing ourselves on them. 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.97 We're sharing the good news, 00:11:48.00\00:11:50.71 things that will make a positive difference 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.44 in this world. 00:11:53.48\00:11:56.34 For Liberty
