Welcome back to Liberty Insider. 00:00:04.07\00:00:06.50 Before the break, 00:00:06.53\00:00:08.40 we were heavy into freedom of speech, 00:00:08.44\00:00:11.41 right? 00:00:11.44\00:00:15.08 Is freedom of speech the real freedom 00:00:15.11\00:00:19.31 that defines western democracy 00:00:19.35\00:00:21.42 versus some other country? 00:00:21.45\00:00:23.25 I'm asking that, believing 00:00:23.28\00:00:24.62 that's almost answers itself, isn't it? 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.89 Doesn't it? Well, it's hard to say. 00:00:26.92\00:00:29.39 I mean, 00:00:29.42\00:00:31.13 I think all the freedoms are intertwined. 00:00:31.16\00:00:34.46 So how do you separate them? 00:00:34.50\00:00:36.06 I would say, freedom of religion is very central, 00:00:36.10\00:00:41.97 because that involves freedom of speech, 00:00:42.00\00:00:44.07 freedom of assembly. 00:00:44.11\00:00:47.64 But all of them are so intertwined, 00:00:47.68\00:00:49.01 it's hard to believe. 00:00:49.04\00:00:50.38 Well, that's true. 00:00:50.41\00:00:51.75 We had a speaker once for our Annual Liberty Dinner, 00:00:51.78\00:00:55.08 and the speaker made the comment 00:00:55.12\00:00:57.25 that the religious freedom is over the litmus test 00:00:57.29\00:00:59.69 for all freedoms. 00:00:59.72\00:01:02.56 But freedom of speech, put into action, 00:01:02.59\00:01:05.46 automatically allows religion full expression, 00:01:05.49\00:01:09.66 it automatically allows political activity. 00:01:09.70\00:01:13.57 I mean, it really clears the way 00:01:13.60\00:01:14.97 for almost everything, doesn't it? 00:01:15.00\00:01:17.24 Well, there is more involved in religion. 00:01:17.27\00:01:20.31 There's practice which doesn't necessarily involve speech. 00:01:20.34\00:01:24.81 You know, speech is kind of a limited... 00:01:24.85\00:01:27.35 It involves some contact 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.28 but it doesn't involve all contact. 00:01:29.32\00:01:31.45 Yeah. 00:01:31.49\00:01:32.82 I was thinking of speech as public expression. 00:01:32.85\00:01:35.42 So yeah, I guess you could have silent practice. 00:01:35.46\00:01:38.06 But it's always struck me 00:01:38.09\00:01:41.10 that most countries in the world, 00:01:41.13\00:01:44.20 communism, 00:01:44.23\00:01:45.57 and then late Soviet Union is the prime example, 00:01:45.60\00:01:49.14 did have a guarantee of freedom of religion. 00:01:49.17\00:01:52.41 Yes. 00:01:52.44\00:01:54.14 But they didn't really have 00:01:54.18\00:01:56.31 the full guarantee of freedom of speech, 00:01:56.34\00:01:57.88 so it became a hypothetical... 00:01:57.91\00:02:00.02 Just look good, they didn't really allow it, 00:02:00.05\00:02:03.28 where if they'd had freedom of speech, 00:02:03.32\00:02:04.82 it would go to the practical level. 00:02:04.85\00:02:08.02 But I've noticed that. 00:02:08.06\00:02:09.39 In fact, I'll tell a story that I've told before 00:02:09.42\00:02:11.23 because it really impressed me at the time. 00:02:11.26\00:02:15.46 I heard an interview on BBC Radio 00:02:15.50\00:02:18.30 with the foreign minister from the Maldives, 00:02:18.33\00:02:22.90 just a little cluster of islands 00:02:22.94\00:02:24.77 in the middle of the Indian Ocean, 00:02:24.81\00:02:28.04 nice tropical environment, 00:02:28.08\00:02:29.81 only few hundred thousand citizens, 00:02:29.84\00:02:31.81 all Muslim. 00:02:31.85\00:02:33.31 And the BBC interviewer asked him what it was like. 00:02:33.35\00:02:37.22 And "Oh, wonderful, free country. 00:02:37.25\00:02:39.42 We have freedom of this, freedom of that, 00:02:39.45\00:02:42.02 no social problems." 00:02:42.06\00:02:44.06 And he asked him, 00:02:44.09\00:02:45.93 he says, "Do you have freedom of religion?" 00:02:45.96\00:02:47.40 "Oh, absolutely, full freedom of religion." 00:02:47.43\00:02:50.57 And he said, "Well, I'm a Christian. 00:02:50.60\00:02:52.73 You know, if I came there, 00:02:52.77\00:02:54.10 would I be allowed to practice my faith?" 00:02:54.14\00:02:57.51 And the guy instantly became offended and he says, 00:02:57.54\00:03:00.88 "Absolutely not." 00:03:00.91\00:03:02.31 He says, "We might as well invite Al-Qaeda 00:03:02.34\00:03:04.71 into our country." 00:03:04.75\00:03:08.35 So in another words, this is poison. 00:03:08.38\00:03:10.22 You can't spread what you've got here. 00:03:10.25\00:03:13.52 So, you know, 00:03:13.56\00:03:14.89 I think freedom of speech, you're right. 00:03:14.92\00:03:16.26 They are all intertwined, but something to pick up. 00:03:16.29\00:03:20.43 You know, it's a wonderful freedom that 00:03:20.46\00:03:22.73 certainly gives a dynamic expression, 00:03:22.76\00:03:25.97 it has to, speech to religion 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.70 wherever it's really honored. 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.94 You know, Martin Luther, 00:03:31.97\00:03:35.91 I mean, he nailed things supposedly to the door. 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.25 The historians are liking to say, 00:03:39.28\00:03:40.62 "No, he didn't really nailed it." 00:03:40.65\00:03:42.15 But it's certain that he stood up, 00:03:42.18\00:03:43.55 and held forth, and railed against the pope, 00:03:43.59\00:03:46.29 and set some quite seditious things 00:03:46.32\00:03:51.79 for the time. 00:03:51.83\00:03:54.96 They couldn't stop him. 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.33 And, of course, as a result, 00:03:56.36\00:03:57.70 the whole world was changed or at least the European world. 00:03:57.73\00:04:01.14 So can you think of any other examples, 00:04:04.51\00:04:07.04 present-day examples, 00:04:07.08\00:04:08.71 both in the negative and the positive 00:04:08.74\00:04:10.45 where freedom of speech is vital, 00:04:10.48\00:04:13.78 and might be threatened, or might be challenged? 00:04:13.82\00:04:15.85 Well, interestingly enough, 00:04:15.88\00:04:17.95 we were just talking about a case 00:04:17.99\00:04:19.95 that was recently decided in which Justice Thomas 00:04:19.99\00:04:25.93 basically was trying to overturn. 00:04:25.96\00:04:29.70 He wasn't fortunately in the majority, 00:04:29.73\00:04:31.70 but his opinion, 00:04:31.73\00:04:33.34 he said he would overturn the standard for defamation 00:04:33.37\00:04:38.57 for public figures. 00:04:38.61\00:04:40.51 And that is very disturbing 00:04:40.54\00:04:43.88 because that standard was set in Civil Rights Movement, 00:04:43.91\00:04:49.22 and they had the government leaders, 00:04:49.25\00:04:54.66 I believe it was in Alabama, had sued 00:04:54.69\00:04:57.86 the New York Times because of their... 00:04:57.89\00:05:01.16 they're reporting on what is going on 00:05:01.20\00:05:03.23 in the Civil Rights Movement. 00:05:03.26\00:05:04.67 And they had a won a very large judgment 00:05:04.70\00:05:07.47 which basically shutdown all the reporting on that issue 00:05:07.50\00:05:10.97 for years 00:05:11.01\00:05:12.34 until the Sullivan case was decided, 00:05:12.37\00:05:15.01 and the Sullivan case stood for the proposition 00:05:15.04\00:05:19.65 that you have to have actual malice. 00:05:19.68\00:05:24.05 The person suing you has to show 00:05:24.09\00:05:27.99 that you intended to publish false statements. 00:05:28.02\00:05:33.90 And that gave a lot of protection to people, 00:05:33.93\00:05:37.33 to journalists writing about these issues. 00:05:37.37\00:05:40.17 And Thomas wants to lower that 00:05:40.20\00:05:42.67 so that a public figure can 00:05:42.70\00:05:46.37 successfully sue a journalist 00:05:46.41\00:05:49.28 for making statements against them, 00:05:49.31\00:05:50.88 and that's very disturbing. 00:05:50.91\00:05:52.55 So he sort of playing tag with the President's view 00:05:52.58\00:05:55.22 that the media are playing with fake news. 00:05:55.25\00:06:01.16 When Trump is trying to find a way 00:06:01.19\00:06:03.19 to sue Saturday Night Live 00:06:03.22\00:06:05.83 and calling everything fake news, 00:06:05.86\00:06:09.30 that's a very, very disturbing opinion. 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.90 I mean, there is fake news floating around, 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.50 there's no question about it. 00:06:14.54\00:06:15.87 Misinformation is another word, 00:06:15.90\00:06:18.61 but to plant the idea in the general populist 00:06:18.64\00:06:21.21 that the vast majority of information floating around, 00:06:21.24\00:06:25.25 particularly information counted to what, 00:06:25.28\00:06:28.22 say, a president or a public official 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.99 might say that by definition, it's fake news, 00:06:31.02\00:06:33.69 it's really to confuse people's powers of perception, 00:06:33.72\00:06:37.36 it seems to me. 00:06:37.39\00:06:38.73 Well, there's plenty of fake news going around 00:06:38.76\00:06:40.63 and most of it is favorable to Trump, so... 00:06:40.66\00:06:43.50 Well, be careful. 00:06:43.53\00:06:45.73 You know, 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.97 we're commenting on this, we're not necessarily for 00:06:48.00\00:06:50.44 or against any government leader, 00:06:50.47\00:06:51.81 but we have to critique any country, 00:06:51.84\00:06:55.38 any administration, 00:06:55.41\00:06:57.01 any particular leader 00:06:57.05\00:06:58.98 that speaks against basic freedoms 00:06:59.01\00:07:01.82 and restricts religious liberty. 00:07:01.85\00:07:05.22 You know, I do think the United States 00:07:05.25\00:07:08.46 has been a continuing bulwark of western liberal values. 00:07:08.49\00:07:14.73 And as you would argue and had in another program, 00:07:14.76\00:07:18.13 the Constitution has given a bedrock 00:07:18.17\00:07:21.10 point from that. 00:07:21.14\00:07:22.94 But things are changing. 00:07:22.97\00:07:25.21 And I think we have to speak out, 00:07:25.24\00:07:28.38 we have to raise an alarm. 00:07:28.41\00:07:29.81 Use free speech. 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.18 I mean, it's really the only weapon 00:07:31.21\00:07:32.55 to argue against losing that weapon. 00:07:32.58\00:07:34.82 That's the great irony. Right. 00:07:34.85\00:07:37.09 Well, I guess this is the pen, but to me, 00:07:37.12\00:07:39.15 that's communication is still... 00:07:39.19\00:07:41.36 Well, speech includes written speech. 00:07:41.39\00:07:43.36 Yes, has to, yeah. 00:07:43.39\00:07:44.86 Pen is mightier than the sword, they say. 00:07:44.89\00:07:46.39 Right. 00:07:46.43\00:07:47.76 They say as they stab someone with the... 00:07:47.80\00:07:51.73 I think, I go back further than most people, 00:07:51.77\00:07:55.37 because when I was in public school in Australia, 00:07:55.40\00:07:57.54 we used to have our own little inkwell on our desk, 00:07:57.57\00:08:00.31 but the nib that they dipped in that thing, 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.31 and they were pretty sharp, I'll tell you. 00:08:03.35\00:08:06.75 But now, 00:08:06.78\00:08:08.32 words spoken or written are powerful. 00:08:08.35\00:08:11.59 And clearly, 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.49 it was written in spoken language 00:08:14.52\00:08:16.62 that was the genesis to the whole American Revolution. 00:08:16.66\00:08:18.96 Right. 00:08:18.99\00:08:20.33 Thomas Paine and whole bunch of other writers 00:08:20.36\00:08:23.90 at the time informed and changed public opinion. 00:08:23.93\00:08:27.54 They didn't have radio, 00:08:27.57\00:08:28.90 they didn't have the ability to speak instantly 00:08:28.94\00:08:31.77 like through the internet that we now have. 00:08:31.81\00:08:34.41 But I think that explains why stuff 00:08:34.44\00:08:36.78 so I fast forward now. 00:08:36.81\00:08:38.81 The communication is there, but it's being questioned, 00:08:38.85\00:08:41.65 and people are not real sure. 00:08:41.68\00:08:43.89 As the Bible says, 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.25 "Every wind of doctrine flowing." 00:08:45.29\00:08:46.72 Right? Right. 00:08:46.76\00:08:48.09 And there is a lot of... 00:08:48.12\00:08:50.69 Anyone can put up a website and say whatever they want. 00:08:50.73\00:08:53.90 So there's a lot less restriction 00:08:53.93\00:08:55.90 and there's a lot less controls 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.93 on what is published 00:08:57.97\00:09:00.44 and whether the credibility of it. 00:09:00.47\00:09:05.54 So that's a problem in this current environment 00:09:05.57\00:09:09.28 where it's hard to know what's true 00:09:09.31\00:09:11.85 because there's so much information coming out. 00:09:11.88\00:09:14.32 And anybody can just put up whatever they want, 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.65 and how do you know whether it's true or not? 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.25 So how do we know if this is the takeaway, 00:09:19.29\00:09:23.02 with free speech, 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.86 a necessary part of our freedoms? 00:09:24.89\00:09:27.10 But you and I, and our viewers, 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.30 how can we be part of a successful dynamic 00:09:29.33\00:09:32.83 of testing what we hear, 00:09:32.87\00:09:36.67 and of being a part of a process 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.11 of disseminating accurate information? 00:09:38.14\00:09:40.04 Is there a principal? 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.14 Well, I think it's important 00:09:42.18\00:09:44.55 that people be intelligent readers 00:09:44.58\00:09:46.82 and read carefully, 00:09:46.85\00:09:50.65 use several different sources, 00:09:50.69\00:09:52.45 use credible sources that you know 00:09:52.49\00:09:54.62 have built-in credibility, 00:09:54.66\00:09:57.79 and that have a history of credibility. 00:09:57.83\00:10:00.50 It's very important to check anything that you read 00:10:00.53\00:10:03.77 against something else, 00:10:03.80\00:10:06.80 not just to believe everything you read. 00:10:06.84\00:10:10.37 It's important to be a critical thinker and say, 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.17 "Does this make sense? 00:10:13.21\00:10:14.54 Does it fit with other things that I know?" 00:10:14.58\00:10:17.68 And educated populous 00:10:17.71\00:10:19.58 is the greatest guard for liberty. 00:10:19.61\00:10:24.85 As a child, my father 00:10:24.89\00:10:27.09 took me several times in Sydney, Australia, 00:10:27.12\00:10:29.76 where we lived to Hyde Park, 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.46 whereas the Hyde Park in England, in London, 00:10:32.49\00:10:36.56 anybody could get the soap box, 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.40 and stand up, and hold forth on any topic 00:10:38.43\00:10:41.04 as seditious as that might be, 00:10:41.07\00:10:42.77 as offensive as it might be, they had the right. 00:10:42.80\00:10:45.51 I think the western freedom that we've experienced, 00:10:45.54\00:10:51.08 most of us in the west, 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.55 is wonderful, the freedom to speak your mind, 00:10:52.58\00:10:55.48 not always that way. 00:10:55.52\00:10:58.29 I've been affected deeply 00:10:58.32\00:11:00.72 since travelling to Cambodia and seeing there, 00:11:00.76\00:11:03.73 and the Killing Fields, 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.29 a memorial to people imprisoned 00:11:05.33\00:11:07.86 for nothing more than just knowing something, 00:11:07.90\00:11:09.73 having glasses, having education, 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.93 hearing about a young woman 00:11:11.97\00:11:13.30 executed for silently or mostly notably, 00:11:13.34\00:11:17.24 singing to herself in the middle of the night 00:11:17.27\00:11:19.11 next to other prisoners, 00:11:19.14\00:11:20.78 a pop song from Happier Days, 00:11:20.81\00:11:23.08 for that she was executed. 00:11:23.11\00:11:25.78 As Christians, as people of faith, 00:11:25.81\00:11:28.15 as people of any faith, 00:11:28.18\00:11:29.52 we have to take it as an obligation. 00:11:29.55\00:11:31.75 As the Bible says to sing songs in the night, 00:11:31.79\00:11:34.66 no matter how desperate the situation, 00:11:34.69\00:11:37.16 we need to sing of our Creator, 00:11:37.19\00:11:38.99 we need to proclaim in words 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.36 that cannot be chained or restricted, 00:11:41.40\00:11:44.23 our faith in God, and our hope for the future, 00:11:44.27\00:11:46.84 and our certainty 00:11:46.87\00:11:48.57 that there will be a day of redemption. 00:11:48.60\00:11:52.67 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:11:52.71\00:11:55.48
