Welcome back to the Liberty Insider, 00:00:03.77\00:00:05.83 where we're continuing with my guest here, 00:00:05.87\00:00:09.77 a very interesting discussion about Christian leadership 00:00:09.80\00:00:14.81 and some of the ramifications in, 00:00:14.84\00:00:16.81 particularly in the United States 00:00:16.85\00:00:18.31 where we have separation of church and state. 00:00:18.35\00:00:20.32 But we now have 00:00:20.35\00:00:21.95 a politically active Christian group 00:00:21.98\00:00:26.42 who are wanting more and more power, 00:00:26.45\00:00:28.12 more government involvement. 00:00:28.16\00:00:29.49 So Christian leadership becomes hyper critical in this context, 00:00:29.52\00:00:32.73 isn't it? 00:00:32.76\00:00:34.10 Yes. 00:00:34.13\00:00:35.46 Well, when you have Christian leadership 00:00:35.50\00:00:36.83 that is ignoring the plainly expressed 00:00:36.87\00:00:38.67 principles of the Bible, 00:00:38.70\00:00:40.44 and particularly in the area of economics, 00:00:40.47\00:00:45.91 you know, I don't know if you heard 00:00:45.94\00:00:47.78 what Pat Robertson said about the murder of Khashoggi. 00:00:47.81\00:00:51.75 Yeah, I didn't hear that comment. 00:00:51.78\00:00:53.98 So tell our viewers what... 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.65 The Saudi Arabian journalist 00:00:55.68\00:00:58.45 who was murdered brutally in Turkey... 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.99 That was a state-organized tip hit operation. 00:01:02.02\00:01:04.29 Right. 00:01:04.33\00:01:05.66 And Congress was outraged by this 00:01:05.69\00:01:09.03 and they were going to thinking of cutting off aid to, 00:01:09.06\00:01:12.30 or the relations with Saudi Arabia. 00:01:12.33\00:01:15.14 And he said in an interview, 00:01:15.17\00:01:18.37 "Well, we've got $100 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia, 00:01:18.41\00:01:23.35 and you know, it's terrible what they did to him 00:01:23.38\00:01:26.41 but you can't blow up 00:01:26.45\00:01:27.78 a $100 billion deal over one man." 00:01:27.82\00:01:31.55 Do you remember what Jesus and the high priest said? 00:01:31.59\00:01:35.62 "Better that one man die than the nation should perish." 00:01:35.66\00:01:38.36 Well, that's interesting because... 00:01:38.39\00:01:39.73 It's the same thinking. 00:01:39.76\00:01:41.10 This comedian Stephen Colbert said on his show, 00:01:41.13\00:01:45.03 he said, "Thank you, Reverend for elucidating 00:01:45.07\00:01:48.57 that central principles of Christianity. 00:01:48.60\00:01:51.01 How important can one man's death be?" 00:01:51.04\00:01:53.81 Yeah, yeah. 00:01:53.84\00:01:55.54 Now we're in a strangely relativistic age, 00:01:55.58\00:01:59.15 there's no question. 00:01:59.18\00:02:00.88 And it's not a time that lends itself easy 00:02:00.92\00:02:03.59 to people with unchanging moral principles. 00:02:03.62\00:02:06.25 You know, this is what I believe, 00:02:06.29\00:02:07.86 I'll die on it, you know, for it if necessary. 00:02:07.89\00:02:11.36 We are actually, 00:02:11.39\00:02:13.03 since we're watching Islamic terrorism 00:02:13.06\00:02:15.20 in its extreme form, 00:02:15.23\00:02:16.77 those are the sort of people that we tend to see that, 00:02:16.80\00:02:19.13 you know, kill themselves 00:02:19.17\00:02:20.50 and someone else for their faith. 00:02:20.54\00:02:21.87 So what used to be a Christian commitment, 00:02:21.90\00:02:24.47 you know, go to the flames if necessary, 00:02:24.51\00:02:27.21 is easily equated with that. 00:02:27.24\00:02:28.61 So nobody wants to be that sort of doctrinaire 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.98 and one dimensional. 00:02:31.01\00:02:35.08 Well, but the difference is that those people are dying 00:02:35.12\00:02:39.82 to force people to be like them. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.09 There's a difference where you're dying 00:02:42.12\00:02:43.46 for your faith or killing for your faith. 00:02:43.49\00:02:45.06 Right. There's a huge difference. 00:02:45.09\00:02:46.43 The martyrs of the Christian era 00:02:46.46\00:02:48.83 were dying because they refused 00:02:48.86\00:02:50.50 to surrender their own individual faith. 00:02:50.53\00:02:52.77 Yeah. 00:02:52.80\00:02:54.14 And that's a very different dynamic. 00:02:54.17\00:02:56.50 And I think I have a hard time 00:02:56.54\00:02:59.41 imagining many of these Christian leaders 00:02:59.44\00:03:02.84 would be willing to actually die 00:03:02.88\00:03:04.81 for what they believe in. 00:03:04.85\00:03:06.51 Well, not too many people. 00:03:06.55\00:03:08.05 As Jesus says, you know, hardly a person 00:03:08.08\00:03:10.75 will give up their life for someone else. 00:03:10.79\00:03:13.02 Well, yes. 00:03:13.05\00:03:14.39 It goes against the graining of natural human impulse. 00:03:14.42\00:03:16.16 That's definitely true. 00:03:16.19\00:03:18.03 But that's the whole point of Christianity, 00:03:18.06\00:03:20.70 is it goes against our grain and more and more 00:03:20.73\00:03:23.90 it reminds me, I don't remember 00:03:23.93\00:03:25.70 whether it's Isaiah or Jeremiah, 00:03:25.73\00:03:27.60 it talks about woe to the shepherds 00:03:27.64\00:03:29.47 who are fleecing the flock. 00:03:29.50\00:03:31.54 And I see a lot of fleecing going on in Christianity. 00:03:31.57\00:03:35.34 Well, it's become big business, of course. 00:03:35.38\00:03:37.05 And which has been happening for a long time 00:03:37.08\00:03:40.22 but when that sort of big business 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.72 takes on a political agenda, 00:03:42.75\00:03:44.39 the route even accelerates. 00:03:44.42\00:03:46.42 Well, yes. Even with good intentions. 00:03:46.45\00:03:48.26 I think the dynamic is working against true spirituality. 00:03:48.29\00:03:52.73 Yes, well, you know, 00:03:52.76\00:03:54.40 the old statement, "Power corrupts 00:03:54.43\00:03:56.90 and absolute power corrupts absolutely." 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.83 But I'll state what I said on another program, 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.27 I still believe, 00:04:01.30\00:04:03.30 if not the leadership because that's a personal thing 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.54 and we don't know one person's heart. 00:04:05.57\00:04:08.44 But as a movement, I still believe 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.35 the vast majority of the Christians 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.95 that have allied themselves under this banner 00:04:12.98\00:04:15.38 have legitimate Christian concerns 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.35 with where society's gone, they're troubled by it. 00:04:17.39\00:04:19.69 The Bible speaks highly of people that sigh and cry 00:04:19.72\00:04:22.39 for the abominations done in the land. 00:04:22.42\00:04:25.49 But they've embraced the wrong solution 00:04:25.53\00:04:28.10 rather than seeking God, and seeking social justice, 00:04:28.13\00:04:31.30 and becoming a salt 00:04:31.33\00:04:33.03 and, you know, all the other images 00:04:33.07\00:04:34.80 to change society through their own witness. 00:04:34.84\00:04:37.04 They've decided to seize power 00:04:37.07\00:04:39.07 and basically apply by legal mandate 00:04:39.11\00:04:43.45 on other people 00:04:43.48\00:04:44.81 what they imperfectly even do in their own life. 00:04:44.85\00:04:47.62 And that's a corrupting sort of dynamic. 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.98 Well, exactly. 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.39 And Christians are called to be the salt of the earth by being, 00:04:52.42\00:04:57.83 by exemplifying the principles of Christianity. 00:04:57.86\00:05:00.90 And if that's how 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.66 the early Christians changed the world, 00:05:02.70\00:05:05.37 not by trying to force other people 00:05:05.40\00:05:07.94 to become Christians, 00:05:07.97\00:05:09.44 but by living the example of Christianity to the extent 00:05:09.47\00:05:13.17 that people were drawn to it and were willing to embrace it 00:05:13.21\00:05:16.54 and actually die for it. 00:05:16.58\00:05:19.51 So it's... 00:05:19.55\00:05:20.98 Christianity is an individual thing. 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.59 It's an individual commitment that you make and morality... 00:05:23.62\00:05:28.52 Through Christianity. 00:05:28.56\00:05:29.92 Right. 00:05:29.96\00:05:31.29 Morality can only be individual, 00:05:31.33\00:05:34.03 morality can never be corporate. 00:05:34.06\00:05:36.13 You can't... 00:05:36.16\00:05:37.50 By definition, you can't enforce morality. 00:05:37.53\00:05:39.00 Well, there are corporate mores, 00:05:39.03\00:05:42.00 social norms, 00:05:42.04\00:05:43.81 and there's an undeniable 00:05:43.84\00:05:47.51 bleed through, if you like, between the moral views 00:05:47.54\00:05:50.35 that say religious community have 00:05:50.38\00:05:51.88 and what society may accept as the social mores 00:05:51.91\00:05:55.18 but they're not one and the same. 00:05:55.22\00:05:56.79 No. 00:05:56.82\00:05:58.15 And I think there's some confusion 00:05:58.19\00:05:59.52 drifting into American society, 00:05:59.55\00:06:01.82 particularly about that sort of separation if you like. 00:06:01.86\00:06:06.09 Right. Right. 00:06:06.13\00:06:07.90 And Christianity allows freedom, 00:06:07.93\00:06:10.97 allows people to make their own choices 00:06:11.00\00:06:13.74 even if they're the wrong choices. 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.10 Yeah. Yeah. 00:06:15.14\00:06:16.47 And, you know, back to our discussions 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.07 of the US Constitution, 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.48 with the dynamic resting in the individual 00:06:21.51\00:06:24.31 and the people's power being granted to the government. 00:06:24.35\00:06:27.88 I think it's consistent 00:06:27.92\00:06:29.25 with the highest ideals of Christianity. 00:06:29.28\00:06:31.65 Yes, I do too. 00:06:31.69\00:06:33.25 And at least as envisioned, 00:06:33.29\00:06:36.96 not as practiced at any time in history but... 00:06:36.99\00:06:39.33 They're back to leadership. 00:06:39.36\00:06:41.86 In the United States at the moment, 00:06:41.90\00:06:43.26 we appear to have strong leadership 00:06:43.30\00:06:46.84 with the capitalists on strong. 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.70 I would argue with the strong part but... 00:06:48.74\00:06:52.04 Well, I said, appear. 00:06:52.07\00:06:53.41 Right, right. 00:06:53.44\00:06:54.78 But we have aggressive leadership. 00:06:54.81\00:06:57.25 Okay. Yeah, I agree with that. 00:06:57.28\00:06:58.61 Does the answer to moral revitalization 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.65 lie in that direction? 00:07:00.68\00:07:03.12 Clearly not, because as I said before, 00:07:03.15\00:07:06.45 moral regeneration is an individual process, 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.79 it doesn't happen on a corporate level. 00:07:09.82\00:07:12.46 It can happen with many individuals together. 00:07:12.49\00:07:15.50 But it doesn't happen... 00:07:15.53\00:07:17.30 It cannot be enforced from above. 00:07:17.33\00:07:21.30 We're running out of time quickly. 00:07:21.34\00:07:23.47 But some well meaning people have created an analog 00:07:23.51\00:07:28.41 between our present leadership 00:07:28.44\00:07:29.98 and an Old Testament dynamics of Darius and his... 00:07:30.01\00:07:35.28 It's Cyrus. 00:07:35.32\00:07:37.79 I'm sorry, Cyrus, yeah, 00:07:37.82\00:07:39.95 his friendliness toward the Jews 00:07:39.99\00:07:41.96 and helping the rebuilding of Jerusalem. 00:07:41.99\00:07:44.46 What do you think of that? 00:07:44.49\00:07:45.83 I just think it's a red herring analogy. 00:07:45.86\00:07:48.83 I think that it's completely inappropriate. 00:07:48.86\00:07:51.93 I think that Cyrus, 00:07:51.97\00:07:54.00 if you look at the histories of the kings, 00:07:54.04\00:07:57.07 I mean, for example, 00:07:57.11\00:07:58.61 Nebuchadnezzar actually became a follower... 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.98 And he is another one that... 00:08:01.01\00:08:02.34 He became a follower of God. 00:08:02.38\00:08:04.31 And he was... 00:08:04.35\00:08:05.68 And God actually had to humble him. 00:08:05.71\00:08:07.95 He had to basically knock him down 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.92 to make him a follower of God. 00:08:09.95\00:08:11.29 So it seems clear to me that even if Cyrus 00:08:11.32\00:08:14.79 was not exactly a follower of God, 00:08:14.82\00:08:17.33 he was certainly amenable to God's suggestions. 00:08:17.36\00:08:20.86 And he was... 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.33 He believed, or at least he had faith, 00:08:23.37\00:08:26.13 sympathy, toward... 00:08:26.17\00:08:27.54 But surely it's not necessary to sanctify a civil ruler 00:08:27.57\00:08:32.37 just because some of their actions 00:08:32.41\00:08:34.31 free of advantageous for faith, 00:08:34.34\00:08:35.91 that's really... 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.28 Oh, absolutely not. Wait, wait. 00:08:37.31\00:08:38.91 So leadership, we need leadership. 00:08:38.95\00:08:41.62 What would you hope 00:08:41.65\00:08:42.98 would happen with the Christian community? 00:08:43.02\00:08:44.82 How will we find a way where we look for leadership? 00:08:44.85\00:08:49.19 Well, I think it's important to recognize again, that it's, 00:08:49.22\00:08:54.33 Christianity is an individual thing, 00:08:54.36\00:08:56.67 and it can't be enforced by law. 00:08:56.70\00:08:59.30 In fact, the attempt to enforce religion by law 00:08:59.33\00:09:02.60 always fails 00:09:02.64\00:09:04.51 because you cannot really make people moral 00:09:04.54\00:09:08.74 by creating laws. 00:09:08.78\00:09:11.81 In the Book of Revelation 00:09:11.85\00:09:13.18 it speaks of the judgment being set 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.15 and the books being opened. 00:09:15.18\00:09:18.62 Many people are afraid of such a judgment. 00:09:18.65\00:09:20.56 But I look forward to a divine judge 00:09:20.59\00:09:22.79 looking at my case with a little charity as well. 00:09:22.82\00:09:25.76 But here on earth and here in the United States, 00:09:25.79\00:09:28.20 way too many people 00:09:28.23\00:09:29.96 have unreal expectations of a Supreme Court. 00:09:30.00\00:09:33.64 And far too many people are willing to manipulate it. 00:09:33.67\00:09:37.47 There are many court watches 00:09:37.51\00:09:38.84 and as we've discussed on this program, 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.54 there's a good argument to be made 00:09:40.58\00:09:41.91 that certain voices and influences 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.75 have been inordinately deleteriously influential 00:09:44.78\00:09:50.12 in court discussions. 00:09:50.15\00:09:51.92 We need to make sure in our feedback 00:09:51.95\00:09:54.66 in the United States 00:09:54.69\00:09:56.02 and similarly in other countries, 00:09:56.06\00:09:58.16 that we don't fulfill what also the Bible says 00:09:58.19\00:10:00.60 will characterize the end of time, 00:10:00.63\00:10:02.66 a time when the judges pervert justice. 00:10:02.70\00:10:06.00 We want good and well administered justice, 00:10:06.03\00:10:10.01 well reasoned, judicial inquiry, 00:10:10.04\00:10:13.21 and decisions that reflect the best 00:10:13.24\00:10:15.21 that men can have, an offer, 00:10:15.24\00:10:17.91 but at the same time it's far, far short of divine judgment 00:10:17.95\00:10:22.12 and a divine determination. 00:10:22.15\00:10:25.15 For Liberty Insider, this is Lincoln Steed. 00:10:25.19\00:10:28.79
